Samy may have won but the future's not bright for MIC

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu showed Malaysians who is boss in the MIC tonight with his men practically winning the lot in one of the party's most hotly contested elections ever.

But among the Indian community and the broader Malaysian society, his era is over. The signs are not good for MIC either.

When opening the MIC AGM hours earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak told delegates that leaders should be popular with the public and not just be champions in their own party.

Samy Vellu may have shown once again that his vise-like grip on the party is unshakeable but MIC will pay a heavy price when facing the Indian community, the majority of whom now lean towards Pakatan Rakyat.

When a dejected Datuk S Subramaniam left the PWTC tonight, many of his supporters mobbed him and urged him to join the Pakatan Rakyat.

"Datuk, the MIC is a sinking ship…let's join Pakatan," delegates were heard calling out.

Subramaniam, who had lost the deputy presidential contest to Datuk G Palanivel, did not say a word. He only gave a wistful smile.

The victory of Palanivel, by 87 votes, also indicates Samy Vellu will continue as president until the end of his 11th term in 2013 because Palanivel, who owes his victory to Samy Vellu, is unlikely to challenge his benefactor.

The mood for change in the MIC was just not big enough today to turn the tables on Samy Vellu.

Another reason for the loss is that the anti-Samy Vellu votes were split between challengers Subramaniam and newcomer Datuk S. Sothinathan, and this allowed the "official" line up to win.

It now appears that Sothinathan was key to victory for Samy Vellu's official line up. He helped reduced Palanivel's majority from 483 to just 87 – votes that could have gone to Subramaniam.

Despite his defeat, Subramaniam's "Change for the better" theme remains relevant for the MIC which is caught in the throes of a leadership change.

Palanivel's victory clears the way for him to take over the party when Samy Vellu, who has vowed to stay until 2013, retires. The big question is when?

The defeat does not spell the end of Subramaniam's career because he polled a respectable 546 votes, indicating his standing in the MIC as the "alternative" leader to Samy Vellu remains.

Subramaniam, 65, who is Siputeh division chairman, is expected to remain in the MIC despite the loss but he faces possible expulsion from the party for allegedly tarnishing the MIC's image over a number of issues.

Samy Vellu announced earlier in the week that Subramaniam will be issued a show-cause letter to answer the charges.

najib altantuya: Palanivel retains No 2, Samy's men romp home - nizar nizar nizar

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 07:40 AM PDT

UPDATED 9.20PM All three candidates endorsed by MIC president S Samy Vellu have also been elected to the three vice-president posts. Samy Vellu's men have won the lion's share of the 23 seats in the party's CWC.
Ah...Subra lost, eh. In 'Subra: Money politics did me in', MK reported that Subra lamented, saying, 'Despite what the prime minister said this morning... delegates made their decision and nothing has changed.'

Firstly, the PM himself is in no position to 'advise' MIC. Reason being he himself is 'popular' in Umno but the public perception of him is questionable.

Another reason is Umno itself is beset with corruption - the 'popular' ones are the ones with money, no? ;) Everybody knows how corrupted Umno is. Even Marina Mahathir said money politics was an open secret in Umno.

Era Najib Altantuya : Politik Wang Antara Penyebab Kekalahan Saya - Subramaniam

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 07:29 AM PDT

"Saya tahu apa nak buat," kata beliau.

-Bernama

Era Najib Altantuya : PAS Desak Borang 2 Undi Pos Dihapuskan

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 06:31 AM PDT

-TVA

Dropped mobile phone or iPod in water? Soak it with rice!

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 06:28 AM PDT

Received a forwarded email with the following info:

I just had to check its veracity.
Thus, googled for 'drop mobile phone rice'.

Here are some results:

Dropped your Mobile Phone or iPod in Water? Rush to the Kitchen? True or False?

Dropped your Mobile Phone or iPod in Water? Rush to the Kitchen

This fact is also mentioned in PC Magazine:

529 Computing Tips

Improving Multimedia: Cell Phones
by Sascha Segan

ADVICE
• Dry out a soaked phone
If you've dunked your phone in water, don't despair. Try taking the battery out and packing the whole thing in dry white rice overnight. Sometimes the rice can draw the water out of the phone.

On a personal note, a few years ago, my wife dropped her mobile phone in the toilet bowl @ Genting. Quickly, she took it out and wiped it. Hehe...even if she had known about the rice 'trick' then, finding rice would be a problem.

Anyway, thanks to God, the phone worked for another 2-3 years!

Era Najib Altantuya : Shahrizat Tidak Layak - Zuraida

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 04:31 AM PDT

TVA/TVS

Era Najib Altantuya : Karpal Singh Gesa Saksi Tampil Beri Keterangan

Finally the basketball court is ready

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 07:58 AM PDT

After weeks of waiting, we finally have our basketball in USJ 20 court back. All looks nice and wonderful. Shot a couple of balls this morning and monday will be the start our games again! Thank you MPSJ!

I guess we would not mind that the court is not smooth, the hoops rattles and the size of the court seems somewhat different. Afterall, we are not playing NBA playoffs.

Looking forward to Monday morning.

McPi McDelivery

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 03:04 AM PDT

Since judgement has been made that a particular fast food chain doesn't have exclusive rights to the use of "Mc" for only their products, I guess nobody should be complaining about the title of my posting this time. If somebody does complain, I shall just McDono (make donno daa..), tak gitu McYam? (for the uninitiated, that's MekYam!)

OK then, back to my story...

I got home from Putrajaya yesterday at about 2 pm. I still had some shopping to do for the poor families but I needed a rest first. So immediately after my zohor prayer, I took a short nap which was good enough to refresh me.

Then off I went shopping - other than foodstuff for the poor families, I also needed to look for a birthday present for Wani's 7 year old son, Shahril. You see, both Wani's sons are sponsored under our Education Sponsorship for Children programme, and since Shahril's birthday was yesterday, his sponsor has sent some money for me to buy him a present.

I wasn't really sure what to buy for Shahril. I was looking at this, looking at that... unable to decide what to buy. Suddenly I saw a boy about Shahril's age, begging his mom for a badminton racket. Hmmm... why not I thought. Besides, he has a brother to play with. So yep, I ended up buying a pair of badminton rackets, complete with the shuttlecocks, of course.

I was too tired and lazy to cook (actually I was plain lazy), so after shopping yesterday Pi Bani masak guna jari telunjuk. Tunjuk, tunjuk, tunjuk... BAYAR!

This morning, after my pasar tani routine (erm, not so routine actually - had more things to buy today as my suku sakat kaum kerabat is expected to be back next week for Raya), off I went for McPi McDelivery. (Mek Pi make delivery...)

First up was Wani's house. Besides being the one furthest amongst the 3 homes I intended to visit, I also needed to get the raya cookies I had ordered earlier to be delivered to the other families. Wani was actually just expecting me to get the cookies and pay for them. She was pleasantly surprised when I handed over the birthday present, some foodstuff and some duit raya as well. She had purposely kept quiet yesterday (about Shahril's birthday) as she didn't want the boy to nag her for a present. Her intention was to buy something after raya, ie after she gets money from her temporary job selling the cookies.

Next up was Sofie's house. I pay extra attention to this family - no, not favoritism... but based on the fact that Sofie herself is still rather weak to cook or go out shopping. For the other families at least I could just hand over some money as the mothers are still strong enough to cook for their children and go shopping for their needs.

Apparently just yesterday morning, Sofie's 7 year old daughter, Ika, was asking, "Mak, makcik Afizah tak nak datang ke dah dekat nak raya ni?" Oh God, thank goodness I decided to visit them today. She was already outside her house on the buaian hijau, waiting for me.

Her 2 older boys, who slept after subuh, got up when they realized I came. It was almost 11 am by then. They had already asked their younger brother to wake them up at 10 am, but the boy forgot...

Sofie's sister (the one she had been staying with before this) and family will be going back to their father's home in another state on Friday before raya. She did ask if Sofie too would like to balik kampong, but Sofie is not fit to travel that far. So yep, it's just Sofie and her children on Hari Raya this year.

And since Sofie is too weak to cook for Raya, this time I made sure the foodstuff I brought along were either easy to cook or "instant" stuff. They were delighted when they saw the nasi impit segera I brought. Sofie was thinking of teaching her second son (the 13 year old who had been showing interest in cooking although he doesn't know how to cook) to make some kuah kacang. But I told her there was no necessity for that as I had also brought along canned kuah satay, canned rendang ayam and canned beef curry. Nothing beats home cooked food I know, but at least Sofie doesn't have to worry about her children not having anything special to eat for Raya.

I also gave them the Raya cookies I ordered from Wani. Again, the children were delighted. They had earlier on hoping they'd get some courtesy raya cookies from a neighbour. Apparently, Sofie's 11 year old son had been helping out that neighbour with some easy tasks with her kuih raya business, to get a little income for raya. Gosh, only 11 years of age and already has some sense of responsibility to get income for the family. Mind you, the little income he gets is for the family, not himself!!

Before I left, I handed over a packet of duit raya each to the children. Ika then asked if I'd be visiting them during Raya.

I told them I'd be busy with my own family on Hari Raya, but I promised I'd come to spend Raya with them within Syawal. Hopefully within the first 2 weeks. And this time, I hope to bring along some home cooked food for them.

After Sofie's, I headed straight to Fuzi's house. I didn't tell Fuzi earlier that I was coming. I just decided to drop by since her house is just on the way back.

Nobody was home. When I called, Fuzi said they were out shopping for the children's Raya needs. I asked if it was okay for me to leave some kuih raya and some other stuff outside her house. She said it should be alright. So yep, I just left some kuih raya, foodstuff, used clothes and the family day photos they had been asking for.

And so that wraps up McPi McDelivery for the day...

Everything is hard to get through if you don't have someone confide in..
It's saddening to be invincible
When we never really appreciate those people around us
People who are there for you...
And they just left without saying goodbye
But there are others too who don't realize that we're there for them
Once again, till what extend you'll go on caring for that somebody.
There always a time where you have to just move on
And couldn't be bother with everything..

Mahathir denies backing Subra - najib altantuya

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 12:09 AM PDT

Mahathir said he did not realise that the party election was around the corner when Makkal Osai) asked for his opinion.

He said his opinion was based on the fact that he had many Indians talked about it, that they are not supporting MIC now because of Samy Vellu.

Even though I am not an Indian, my opinion is that as long as as any Tom, Dick or Harry is elected, MIC will be fine. ;)

MIC Will Not Regain Support If Samy Vellu Stays On - Mahathir

PETALING JAYA, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The MIC will continue to lose the support of the Indian community if Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu continues to lead the party, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said the MIC was getting weaker and it could not be restored as long as Samy continued to hold the reins.

"MIC is weak because of Samy Vellu, I heard many Indians talked about it, they are not supporting MIC now because of Samy Vellu.

"Actually before the 2008 general election a tv station had asked me what is going to happen to MIC, I said as long as Samy Vellu is there, MIC will lose. It is correct and he lost," Dr Mahathir told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri aid and the Perkim President Seri Cemerlang Award here on Friday.

He was commenting on Samy's disapproval of his (Dr Mahathir's) remarks published by Makkal Osai, a Tamil newspaper, that former MIC deputy president Datuk S.Subramaniam would be a good leader to lead the MIC.

Subramaniam is vying for the MIC deputy presidency at the MIC 63rd general assembly tomorrow.

"When he (Makkal Osai) asked for my opinion, I did not realise the party's elections is around the corner. I gave my opinion, if he (Samy) stays on, MIC cannot be revived. Now the Indian community is divided into eight parties.

"Previously, all of them supported MIC, not many are supporting MIC now and they gave the same reason - they are fed up of Samy Vellu, who wants to hold the reins until nobody else can take over from him. Whoever becomes his deputy, when they were getting popular, he finished them of," he said.

On Samy Vellu's allegation that he (Dr Mahathir) had neglected the Indian community, he said it was not true as he had helped all communities and not only the Malays.

"A newspaper had quoted him as saying that I had never helped the Indian community. When I called him from Syria then, he denied it.

"When I came back, the newspaper played the tape for me. It was true he did say that I had never helped the Indian community," he added.
