Aidiladha Tanda Pengorbanan Umat Islam

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 10:19 AM PST

Sultan Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah berkenan menunaikan Solat Aidil Adha bersama pemimpin kerajaan negeri dan 10,000 rakyat di Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam pagi tadi.

Walaupun sambutan Hari Raya Korban agak sederhana namun umat Islam digalakkan melakukan Solat Aidil Adha di pagi 10 Zulhijjah, diikuti dengan melaungkan takbir membesarkan Allah dan menyembelih haiwan ternakan.

Hari Raya Aidil Adha bukan setakat mengalirkan darah ternakan ke bumi malah ia adalah simbolik pengorbanan Nabi Ibrahim A.S. bersama anaknya, Nabi Ismail A.S menunaikan perintah Allah SWT.

- MOHD SAHRULNIZAM MOHD ZAIN (TVS)

Lomography is Not Cheap, But I Like

I kept my two toy camera, a Holga and Diana F+ with Fisheye in the cupboard for a long time because I didn't really have to time to take out to shoot but recently, I brought them out and shoot all the shots I've left in the film.

After getting the film to processed, and saw the outcome, my interest came back again. Have been surfing and checking out a lot of toy camera lately and my shopping and wish list increases.

OMG! I am so poor right now. Toy camera is cheap, the build quality is also cheap but I tell you what, it's not a cheap hobby! Because you will have to spend for films, different type of films, send to shop to process, then scan into digital, it will be expensive.

Well, if you are into it, feeling arts, be sure you save a lot of money, earn a lot of money and never count how much you have spent, it will be a lot.

More shots are coming, don't wanna post it all once. Not fun. Haha. By the way, the above shot is I did the scan from negative myself. Not bad right?

In Memory of Maah Ajuh

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 08:53 AM PST

Today I take a break from my 'Happiness is....' series. Something rather 'unhappy' happened.

I am referring to the death of Mr Maah Ajuh.

Today, Friday 27 November 2009 is a public holiday in Malaysia due to the Hari Raya Aidil Adha, otherwise known as Hari Raya Haji in conjunction with the Haj season in the Muslim Holy Land. It is also known as Hari Raya Korban (Feast of Sacrifice) to commemorate patriach Abraham (Ibrahim)'s obedience to God by his preparedness to sacrifice his son. God however was only testing Abraham's loyalty and stopped him from killing his son just in the nick of time.

Apart from that, it was of course Thanksgiving Day in America. Thus, I was in no hurry to wake up. On a holiday, I normally wake up only when my stomach tells me to.

However, Friday morning, I was awaken by a phone call. The caller said Mr Maah Ajuh had passed away in our hometown of Tamparuli a few hours earlier.

I forced myself out of bed, much as I would like to sleep for at least an hour more, washed and dressed up to go to Tamparuli and breakfast.

The late Maah was more than a childhood friend. He was also the drummer cum singer for our band, The Hornbill, in the late 1960s. He is seen in the centre of the picture above, holding his drum sticks. I am seated second from left.

The picture was taken in 1968 or sometime thereabout. It was taken soon after our band won the Tuaran-district level Battle of The Bands. As you can see, the picture, taken at the only studio in Tamparuli, was in black-and-white, which was the norm those days. And mind you, one has to wait for a few days before you get to see your picture; comapared to a few minutes (and in colour) now!

If I remember correctly, the picture was published in the local newspapers to announce our victory as well as the fact that we would be performing at the up-coming Tuaran Tamu Besar. The Tamu Besar, then held annually, was the biggest event of the district. The highlight was the beauty contest, just like the Kaamatan (Harvest Festival).

But the late Maah 'disappeared' just a few days before the Tamu Besar. He apparently left quietly for Kuala Lumnpur to be trained as a policeman! Luckily we had a standby drummer, though not as good as he.

Upon graduating from the Police Training Academy, the late Maah returned to Sabah to serve as a policeman, of course. Whenever he was off-duty, he would still play the drum for us.

Sometime in the late 1970s, the late Maah was seconded to become ADC (bodyguard) to the then Deputy Chief Minister cum Tamparuli Assemblyman, the late Dr James Ongkili.

After the defeat of the Berjaya party by PBS, the late Maah served Ongkili's successor and my classmate Datuk Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing in a similar capacity until recent years.

In between serving as a policeman and a bodyguard, the late Maah tried his hand in small businesses including starting a car-wash business beside his house by the main road which is still in operation.

The late Maah was a younger brother of the late Wugau Ajuh (also spelt Ugau) who was the Ketua Kampung (those days called Orang Tua) or village headman for Bontoi which is just next to Tamparuli town itself. Those days, the Orang Tua was influencial and highly respected by the native community.

Following Berajaya's victory in 1976, the late Ugau was promoted to Ketua Anak Negeri or Native Chief (NC) for Tamparuli. An NC oversees a group of village headmen. Ugau remained the NC until his death in the late 1970s. Co-incidentally, he also died on Hari Raya Haji day, just like his brother Maah.

The late Ugau was father to two of our singers in the late 1960s, Malim and Maliana Ugau. Malim and Maliana also appeared on local TV in the early 1970s, those days still in black-and-white. Together with our band sometimes, they also sang at various functions. Those days, entertainment or night life was limited (no Internet, no Video games, no Karaoke) and people would hold a dance party and call a band at the slightest excuse - wedding, engagement, birthday, etc. Yes, the catch-phrase or password those days was 'party' and whenever teenagers or young adults met they would ask each other when and where the next party would be.

Malim is now Datin Hajjh Malim (forgot her Muslim name), married to a successful businessman and veteran journalist Datuk Wahid Norbinsha. Maliana is also a Datin, married to Datuk Jahid Jahim, Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports cum Tamparuli Assemblyman.

I am not sure how old the late Maah was. A few years my senior, he must have been aroudn 60. But all I know is the people of Tamparuli will miss his jokes and antics. There was never a dull moment with him around in any function.

May he rest in peace.

MBPJ councillors get RM55.53mil

FOR the first time, the Petaling Jaya city councillors have been allocated RM55.53mil based on their respective zones.

The allocation is part of the RM260.44mil budget next year tabled by the Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman recently.

Roslan said the different allocations were based on the needs of the respective areas.

The highest allocation goes to councillor Latheefa Koya (RM5.4mil, Zone 16)) followed by Anthony Thanasayan (RM4.9mil, Zone 13) and R. Selvarajan (RM4.4mil).

Councillor Kamarudin Suhaimi was allocated the lowest (RM339,620, Zone 23) while Mahharul Ismail allocation is (RM428,700, Zone 18).

The allocations are a boon for the councillors but questions have surfaced on why certain areas are getting more than the others.

StarMetro spoke to the councillors about their plans for their allocations and what could be expected from this new move by MBPJ.

Latheefa said her allocation was based on a combination of requests from the residents, needs of the area, community representatives as well as the council's outlook.

She said her budget would have to cover her large area, including Section 1A, 4, 18 and 3.

"When broken down it is not that big at all. My area is very old and needs a lot of upgrading work and this includes broken drains," she said.
She said the allocation allowed the councillors to save time on red tape and get on with the job.

"This will also enable MBPJ to specifically carry out what the residents want," she said.

She said since this was the first time they had been given such a budget, they would spend only on necessities.

Anthony said the money allocated would be used primarily for Section 52, which would become a green, clean and disabled friendly zone.

He said the money would be used for projects that had been neglected in the past like facilities for the disabled and proper pavement.

"There have been instances in the past where due to red tape, some plans could not be carried out. With this allocation, we want to plan wisely and cater to the public's needs.

Councillor Kamarudin Suhaimi is positive about the small budget allocated for his area. He said the council was not going to spend money unless necessary.
He said the council still had RM80mil in reserves as it had not used up all the money from this year's budget.

"My area does not have many people and it is very small. Most of the money will be used for roads and the drainage system near the Bintang market area," he said.

He said they could always ask the financial committee for more allocation if the funds given were insufficient.

En Tao Methodist Church - Grand Sales For Church Building

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 06:56 AM PST

The DJ station where the atmosphere of the fund-raising sales was made lively!

My good brother Hua Ping was spotted at the egg station.

I asked Yong Sun to pose for a photo. Not forgetting his newly published book, he held it up to get some promotion benefits. The proceeds of the book sales all went to the building fund.

At the live cooking station, this brother gave an impressive demonstration of kueh teoh frying!

A makeshift eatery where enticing foods were served.

Some houses for sale!

En Tao Methodist Church at Jalan Teku, Sibu is expanding fast. To cope with the growing church members, the church has put it on the drawing board a new building plan.
Towards raising funds to finance the project, the church members put their hands and heads together this morning to hold a grand sales function.
Although the scale of the fund-raising sales was only moderate, the turnout was encouraging. The whole sales was heartwarming and the atmosphere was brotherly and sisterly.
It touched me to see all the brothers and sisters serving Lord selflessly together for the glory of our almighty Father.
I bumped into Hua Ping, Yong Sun, Steve Ling, Steven Wong, Daniel Chew and many others. The one hour that we (Yian and I) stayed on there was truly joyous.

Dato' sak didn't want to drive up to Cherating because it was almost 6 in the evening.

And so we just decided to go to nearby Pantai Sepat.
Recently, I have decided to make him my 'male model?'

"You tolonglah jangan ambik gambar perut buncit I ok?"

Alas..the beautiful wind by the sea still wanted to show the silhouette of his pouchiness..

He quickly grabbed the camera.." Ok..I'll take a picture of you wearing your tight pants!"
Hooo..balas dendam!! hahaha

Of course Dato' didn't do that..

He took photos of the fantastic view of Pantai Sepat.

I then took photos of many contented fat, healthy looking cows grazing and lazing happily in the area.
They have escaped the religious korban ritual today.
What puzzled me was that the ones I saw tied up in the mosque compound to be sacrificed in Balok yesterday were rather thin and scrawny.
Hmmm..I wonder..

Over the Tanjung Lumpur bridge we could see rows of fishing boats colourfully and neatly anchored by the jetties.
Since its Raya Haji today, obviously most of the fishermen are enjoying and celebrating Aidil Adha with their love ones at home or back in their kampong hometowns.

Nowadays, I am really beginning to treasure my photography sprees with my dear old friend.
Ahh.. it must be the fresh Kuantan sea air with its rejuvenating ingredients.

p.s. Decided to drive to KL tomorrow..because it was just lovely staying at home today.

After getting all the wrong angles even though I tried my best not to snap his pouchiness..a good laugh was all that I could deliver..

Momo's Raya Haji perch on the telly!

Retrospective Exhibition At Penang State Art Gallery

The best of Tay's lifetime
Story and photos by JEREMY TAN

RENOWNED local watercolour and batik artist Tay Mo-Leong has been accorded one of the art scene's highest honours – a retrospective exhibition featuring his life's works at the Penang State Art Gallery.

The exhibition showcases Tay's masterpieces dating back to the 1950s, many of which are in the hands of private collectors who have generously allowed the pieces to be exhibited.

It also marks the 10th solo exhibition for the 71-year-old who was born in Sungai Bakap and a full-time artist for the past 45 years.
Tay's batik piece "Legong Dancers in Blue".

During his secondary education at Chung Ling High School in Penang, he joined the art society and developed a passion for art under the tutelage of Khaw Sia, one of Malaysia's foremost art pioneers.

Upon finishing high school, he enrolled at the Provincial Taipei Normal College, graduating with a diploma in fine art. Since then, Tay has enjoyed a long and illustrious career, contributing greatly to the local art scene and in particular, batik.

State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who was guest of honour at the opening ceremony on Saturday, said the exhibition was a great tribute to one of Penang's most outstanding artists.
A batik piece entitled, 'Native Girls'

"Tay Mo-Leong is no doubt a household name in art circles. As such, this exhibition is a major event not just for Penangites, but the entire nation as well," he said.

Tay also donated three of his works to the gallery, which Wong said would go a long way in making the gallery's permanent collection one of the best in the country.

The opening ceremony also saw the launch of a 300-page hardcover book detailing Tay's life and accomplishments. Titled Tay Mo-Leong Retrospective, the book includes a selection of over 150 of Tay's best artworks.

"This publication is the definitive work on Tay and his life. It will be an inspiring piece for all artists and art lovers alike," said gallery chairman Datuk Tang Hon Yin.

The exhibition at the gallery, located at the ground floor of Dewan Sri Pinang, runs until Nov 30. For details, contact 04-2613144.

Rumah Hijau - Handing over the keys to the residents.

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 04:44 AM PST

As reported in The Star
Finally, after 40 years

AFTER nearly a 40-year wait, the 236 families living in the slum of Rumah Hijau in Mak Mandin, Penang, can finally move into new three-room low-cost flats located 3km away from their longhouses.

Penang Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said about 170 families had accepted the 650 sq ft units in Ampang Jajar, Butterworth, adding that he hoped the remaining families would follow suit.
236 families living in the slum of Rumah Hijau in Mak Mandin in Penang finally after 40 years.

"We will meet with the remaining families to convince them to accept the flat units which have been built for them.

"Hopefully, upon seeing their neighbours enjoying a better quality of life, they will move here as well," he said after presenting keys to the units to families who had accepted the offer at the flats' community hall yesterday.

Wong said the project's developer, Silver Channel Sdn Bhd, obtained the certificate of fitness for the 20-storey block comprising 304 flats on Oct 28, while balloting for the units was done on Sept 15.
New homes: Rumah Hijau residents registering to collect their low-cost flat keys at Ampang Jajar in Butterworth, Penang yesterday.

Under an agreement with the developer, he said, all temporary occupational licence holders (TOL) from Rumah Hijau would get a free unit which costs RM42,000.

"The non-TOL holders are being offered cash compensation of RM25,000 per family.

"They have an option to take up units in this flat block by paying the difference of RM17,000," Wong said.

He said tenants who lived in Rumah Hijau for more than five years would receive a compensation of RM5,000, while those who stayed there between a year and three years would receive RM3,000.

Tenants, who lived under a year, would not be entitled to any compensation, he added.

Wong said those who accepted the flat units had been asked to voluntarily demolish their present houses and vacate by Dec 31.

"We have to give them a deadline to move out otherwise they would take their own time to do so," he said.

Resident Fatimah Mohamad, 53, said she was happy to relocate to the flat, noting that her wooden longhouse unit in Rumah Hijau, where she had lived for 40 years, was no longer habitable.

"The toilet in my termite-ridden house is broken; there is no proper sewage system and the area is infested with rats, flies and other pests," she said.

Fatimah, a divorcee with five children aged between 14 and 33 including a daughter who is deaf, however, said she could not afford the deposit for water and electricity to be installed in her flat.

"I hope the developer will graciously give us a small amount for relocation expenses as we are finding it hard to raise the amount by Dec 31," she added.

Fellow resident M. Munusamy, 49, an ex-lorry driver, said he too did not have the money to move within such a short period, adding that he hoped the state would extend the deadline.

Another resident, Chong Hsiao Nam, 79, said he was thankful to the state government for expediting negotiations with the developer, noting that the residents there had waited a long time to move into better abodes.

In April last year, Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy said that the residents gave up their original squatter houses in 1972 and moved into the longhouses in Rumah Hijau to enable the Penang Development Corporation to develop the Mak Mandin Industrial Area project.

Initially, the residents were supposed to stay in the longhouses temporarily for about three to five years, Ramasamy said, but it had been almost 40 years since they moved out.

Rumah Hijau is a slum-within-a-town. It is not accessible by cars and the houses are often hit by flash floods as well as drainage backflow.

Apabila Gesaan Nik Amar Disambut Oleh UMNO

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 04:23 AM PST

Nik Aziz menjadi Menteri Besar Kelantan sejak selepas pilihan raya umum 1990.

Ahmad disebut-sebut bakal menggantikan Nik Aziz jika beliau berundur.

Kemelut dalaman PAS Kelantan dilihat meruncing sehingga memaksa Nik Aziz mengarahkan menantunya, Abdul Ariffahmi Abdul Rahman meletakkan jawatan sebagai Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Perbadanan Menteri Besar Kelantan.

Ulasan GB

Seerah Rasulullah: Tiada siapa mendesak Rasulullah menamakan khalifah sementara hayat Rasulullah s.a.w. dikandung badan.

Despite consensus that there is a need for elections, the squabbling factions in MCA still have not come to terms when fresh party polls should be held . The faction led by MCA vice-president Liow Tiong Lai had announced the calling off of the second extraordinary general meeting (EGM) scheduled for Saturday at the party headquarters. Instead, they would turn the second EGM into a briefing session.

Oh man! What a waste of time!! Briefing session!!!? If only Liow were to spend that much time and energy in the Health Ministry as he did in MCA, I think there would not be a nationwide dengue alert today.

Liow is an excellent example of service to self above service to the nation.

Gesaan Muhyiddin Berbaur Ugutan -Khalid Samad

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 01:40 AM PST

-TVS

UMNO BN Dalang Perpecahan Kaum India Di Malaysia

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 01:28 AM PST

Xavier berkata kewujudan Badan Bertindak Hak Hindu, Parti Makkal Sakhti dan Parti Hak Asasi Manusia menunjukkan perpecahan kaum India semakin serius.

- MOHD SAHRULNIZAM MOHD ZAIN (TVS)
