In The Park

Maple tree outside Sogong Underground Shopping opposite The Westin Chosun Seoul
Maple tree outside Sogong Underground Shopping opposite The Westin Chosun Seoul.

The colours of autumn fascinates me. That is when Mother Nature bursts forth in flames of orange, red, yellow and all hues in between, just before enveloping everything in the blinding white of winter. One day, I want take Wuan to a park awashed in bright fallen leaves of the maple tree. I want to experience together with her autumn in its full splendour.

The closest I came to a maple tree was in downtown Seoul. It stood near one of the entrances to the Sogong Underground Shopping opposite The Westin Chosun Seoul. The season was in transition from summer to autumn. The maple leaves were still fresh green.

I want to soak in the exuberance of autumn with Wuan, listening to the crackling of the dried leaves with each step we take, listening to the wind as it rushes through the forest, shaking the leaves off twigs and carrying them aimlessly in its wake. What will autumn smell like? Sweet? Musty? I cannot wait to discover with Wuan the mysteries autumn has to offer.

In The Park

Autumn's wind
rustling the leaves
stirring up
a golden carpet
of amber and ochre
greeting us
as we walk
hand in hand
in the park.

The History Channel's Distortions of the Crusades

Posted: 13 Nov 2009 07:10 AM PST

I recently taped and am watching a documentary, "The Crusades: Crescent and the Cross," on the History Channel. While it is more or less historically accurate—names, dates, figures—it suffers from two weaknesses, weaknesses that often take center stage whenever Islam is discussed in the West: 1) biases and apologetics on behalf of Islam, coupled with outright distortions concerning Christians and Christianity; and 2) anachronisms, by projecting the motives and worldview of modern man onto the motives and worldview of pre-modern man, both Muslims and Christians.

Take the first 10 minute segment, dealing with Pope Urban II's call to the Crusades, including the famous Council of Clermont (1095) where Urban made his case. Urban is repeatedly portrayed as a sly politician wholly indifferent to Christianity and faith, simply interested in aggrandizing his power and authority.

Incidentally, we are never told how Islam "spread"—that Jerusalem (not to mention practically the entire Muslim world today) was ruthlessly conquered—even by the enthusiastic narrator who speaks with somber awe whenever touching upon Muslim prowess. Instead, the narrator informs us that the encroachment of the Turks upon Byzantium was "the perfect opportunity [for Urban] to enhance his political power." And of course, the "historians" interviewed all agree.

The "British-Pakistani" Muslim historian, Tariq Ali, is repeatedly quoted as something of the final authority on the Crusades in this documentary. Sitting there pompously, he nonchalantly informs us that, if the popes were anything, they were "scheming, manipulating, intriguing" persons, always out to exploit.

So what if it is a historical fact, especially after the battle of Manzikert (1071, a little more than two decades before Urban's call to the crusades), that the Muslim armies were conquering more Christian land and increasingly terrorizing and persecuting Christians? Or that the Fatimid caliph al-Hakim had recently desecrated and destroyed a number of important churches—such as the Church of St. Mark in Egypt and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem—and decreed several, even more oppressive than usual, decrees against Christians and Jews? It is in this backdrop that Pope Urban called for the Crusades: Continue to Raymond Ibrahim's article in full......

Will Obama pay a political price for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s rampage?

Posted: 13 Nov 2009 06:35 AM PST

Let me say up front, I don't think President Obama is to blame for the Fort Hood shootings, and I don't think it's fair to say otherwise. But (you knew there had to be a "but") that doesn't mean Obama won't pay a political price for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's rampage.

At first blush, it seems distasteful to take a political yardstick to the pain suffered at Fort Hood. But if we are to consider this incident part of the bloody tapestry of the larger war on terror, there's no way to separate it from politics. After all, the war on terror has been driving politics in America for the better part of a decade now. And that might offer insight into why so many are eager to make the massacre a story about the psychological breakdown of a man who just happened to be a Muslim.

If this is just another incident where a deranged man went "postal" at his office, then there's no reason to second-guess the Obama administration's fairly relentless effort to dismantle the war on terror.

That effort stems from what Obama believes to be a sweeping mandate to be Not George Bush. In pursuit of that mandate, the White House has already purged the phrase "war on terror" from its lexicon, preferring "overseas contingency operations." Obama is hell-bent on closing Guantanamo Bay, is making progress on the White House project to treat terrorists as mere criminals, and has kowtowed to the United Nations as no president has. Meanwhile, his secretary of homeland security, Janet Napolitano, says that Islamic terrorism of the type we saw on 9/11 should now be referred to as "man-caused disasters." But she adds that American right-wingers must be scrutinized as potential terrorists.

All of these moves seemed politically palatable for a war-weary country that felt, rightly or wrongly, as if we'd made it through the worst of it. It was time for a makeover of our political house. The problem is that, rather than merely throw on a fresh coat of paint and lay down some new carpeting, Obama is going after load-bearing walls and structural beams. And if the war on terror refuses to go away as easily as the phrase we use for it did, the whole edifice of the Obama administration could come crashing down.

For instance, it seems likely that Obama has already suffered a rhetorical defeat. Whatever his faults, President Bush got to say one thing that the American people always appreciated: After 9/11, he kept us safe from a terrorist attack on the homeland. If Hasan acted as a jihadist terrorist and not a disgruntled psychiatrist, Obama can't even make the same claim about his first year in office.

More substantively, Obama has had the luxury of exploiting his predecessor's success. His actions on Guantanamo, his mea culpas for America to the Muslim world, etc., have only been possible in a political environment absent domestic terrorist attacks. As it stands, Hasan may have been a one-off, an isolated incident. Let's hope that's the case, but let's not delude ourselves that this is likely. Era Najib Altantuya : Kota Seputeh, Mahkamah Putuskan Isnin

Posted: 13 Nov 2009 06:20 AM PST

Era Najib Altantuya : SPRM Takut, Umum Pakar Forensik UK Bantu Bedah Siasat Teoh Beng Hock

Posted: 13 Nov 2009 05:21 AM PST

-TVS

Ulasan GB

mengapa terpaksa guna pakar UK?

Menurut Balasubramaniam, Deepak mahu Balasubramaniam menarik balik akuan sumpahnya.

Sumber: Merdeka Review Video: TVS

Sibu In The Blue Ocean - Part 12

Posted: 13 Nov 2009 04:27 AM PST

Before going into detail, Tan Kee Hian outlined four caveats on Blue Ocean Strategies for Sibu:

1. These are preliminary ideas based on broad understanding of Sibu and experience from other similar situations (Malaysia, Singapore and other similar cases).
2. The ideas are intended to be provocative and to stimulate interests, discussions and reality checks.
3. The innovation journey and capability-building are just as important as the final outcome of the journey.
4. A learning curve in innovation
-Initially building the necessary platforms and capabilities.
-Before pushing for the Blue Ocean ideas.
Build on these ideas, constructively.

Basically, Sibuians need a change in mindset before getting on board for a Blue Ocean journey. Tan Kee Hian called on the audience to break the Do Good- Make Money Tradeoff.

1. Genuine Blue Oceans deliver:
-Value for customers
-Value for stakeholders
2. Commercially-viable propositions.....
3. .....that generate economic and social development.
4. Possibly longer-term investment horizon.

RM5mil does sound a lot, but seriously, it is nothing compared to the values of what Bala knows.

Hehe ...perhaps someone should have paid Bala RM50mil? LoL well at least we know Mr.Bala is NOT THAT CHEAP.

PI Bala claims offered RM5m to retract statement

UPDATED

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 — Missing private investigator P. Balasubramaniam has claimed in a video clip that he was offered RM5 million to retract his statutory declaration that linked Datuk Seri Najib Razak to murdered Mongolian model Altantuya Shaaribuu, reigniting allegations that the prime minister has vehemently denied.

Balasubramaniam's claims were aired in an undated 88-second video clip today hosted by the Malaysia-Today.net website whose main contributor is the fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin. The first statutory declaration (SD) was also put up with the video clip.

"Deepak actually came to see me because he want me to retract my first SD... After that he offered me RM5 million for me to retract the SD," Balasubramaniam said in the video clip, referring to a person whom Raja Petra says is linked to Najib's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Balasubramaniam, a former police officer, disappeared with his family on July 4, 2008 after making a second SD that overturned the first declaration. His location remains unknown until now.

The Malaysia-Today.net website said there will be more video clips featuring the Balasubramaniam interview. In the first part, the private investigator also claimed he was asked to go to Putrajaya to meet certain individuals over his SD.

"He was asking me to go to Putrajaya with him but he never mentioned whom he wanted me to meet in Putrajaya," Balasubramaniam said, referring to the country's administrative capital.

July 3, 2008 file photo of Balasubramaniam at a news conference in Petaling Jaya. He disappeared with his family the next day. — Reuters pic

Balasubramaniam's two SDs had rocked the murder trial of Altantuya, who was killed on Oct 19, 2006. Three people, including political and defence strategist Abdul Razak Baginda, were arrested for plotting her death.

Abdul Razak, who admitted to an affair with the Mongolian model who also acted as an interpreter, claimed he did not order her death but wanted the policemen to stop her from harassing or blackmailing him over their affair.

He was acquitted without his defence being called while the two policemen charged, Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, were sentenced to the gallows for killing her.

Balasubramaniam was initially hired by Abdul Razak to keep watch over Altantuya's movements when she was in Kuala Lumpur to allegedly blackmail the political strategist, who is a known close associate of then Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Najib.

His first SD was announced in a press conference with opposition leaders on July 2, 2008 but a day later, he stunned the country when a different lawyer brandished a second SD that overturned the contents of the first declaration.

Balasubramaniam then went missing, according to his nephew who claims his uncle is now in an undisclosed location.

WEEKEND VIEW: PJ Right On Track With Handicapped Friendly Facilities

Posted: 12 Nov 2009 11:54 PM PST

DATELINE PETALING JAYA:

Lots of good things are poised to happen for people with disabilities soon, thanks to the initiative and intervention of Petpositive.

First of all, Petpositive, also known as the Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly is expecting to meet Datuk Seri Sharizat Abdul Jalil early next week to talk about disability issues.

When that meeting takes place we hope to update the Minister from the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry about some of the pressing issues confronting the handicapped community in Malaysia today.

We also intend to highlight to her about the unique role of animal-assisted therapy in helping the disabled and the elderly achieve a higher quality of life for themselves through their special pet companions.

The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is also expected to deliberate the issue if dog licenses should be given free to the disabled and elderly communities in Petaling Jaya.

Petpositive has put a strong case to the local council as to why they should offer free dog licenses to these special groups.

In addition to recognising and supporting the role of animal-assisted therapy in the nation, giving dog licenses free to these marginalised groups would also help to legitimise the pet ownership of many disabled and residents who are presently keeping pets without licenses.

Finally, expect to see more street pavements in PJ being made more friendly to wheelchair users and the blind in the near future.

These features will be evident more to upgrading of pavements in PJ.

Residents in PJ within the next couple of months will also be able to witness an increase of disabled parking spots to more wheelchair friendly facilities in the PJ Civic Centre and the Library in Old Town.

PET+BLOGSPOT is the official online blog of the Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association (Petpositive).

Our blog which was first established in October 2007 currently has more than 30,000 hits. Kindly take note that views expressed in this blog are not necessarily those of Petpositive.

Posted: 12 Nov 2009 09:43 PM PST

UPDATED 1PM Fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin has been granted yet another discharge not amounting to an acquittal for three criminal defamation charges.

RPK gets discharge in defamation case too

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 — Blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, or better known as RPK, was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in his criminal defamation trial by the Sessions Court today as the police have yet to serve the warrant of arrest on him.

He is charged with defaming Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of the Prime Minister, Lt-Col Abdul Aziz Buyong and his wife Lt-Col Norhayati Hassan, in a statutory declaration made at the Jalan Duta court complex here on June 18 last year.

The arrest warrant was issued on May 26 when he failed to turn up in court.

The two military officers have also filed a separate defamation suit against Raja Petra.

On Wednesday, the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court also gave Raja Petra a discharge not amounting to an acquittal relating to a sedition charge because the police could not trace him to serve another warrant of arrest.

The police might as well stop looking for RPK. Wasting time. RPK is as harmless as a dove.
