US warned tourists of Terror Attack in Sabah & Sarawak

Subject: US warned tourists of Terror Attack in Sabah & Sarawak

By Barney Henderson in Kuala Lumpur

US embassy officials in Malaysia say terrorist groups are planning to
increase attacks in the state of Sabah.

The state famed for its dramatic mountain range, including the highest
mountain in south east Asia, Mount Kinabalu, and world class diving –
is popular among British tourists.

The US government believes that there is "present concern" that the
Abu Sayyaf group of Islamic militants, with links to al Qaeda, is
planning to attack foreign tourists in Sabah and issued a travel
notice on Friday.

"There are indications that both criminal and terrorist groups are
planning or intend acts of violence against foreigners in eastern
Sabah," the 'warden notice' states.

"The Abu Sayyaf Group has kidnapped foreigners in eastern Sabah in the

The Foreign Office advises caution to British travellers to Sabah,
stating that boats travelling to and from islands and dive sites are
potential targets and that attacks can be indiscriminate.

"There is a general threat from terrorism in the area," a Foreign
Office spokesperson said. "We advice all people travelling to Borneo
to regularly check the FCO website, which is constantly updated."

Between January and October 2009, 27,550 British and Irish tourists
visited Sabah. The region boasts a diverse mixture of rich
rainforests, picturesque mountains, miles of sandy beaches and clear
seas that are full of exotic sea life and perfect for diving.

The Sabah Tourism Board immediately refuted the US travel notice by
stating that Malaysian police and armed forces have put "extensive
measures" in place to combat terrorist attacks on tourists.

"There are no problems at all with terrorists in Sabah and Malaysia as
a whole, it is safe" Senator Datuk T Murugiah, deputy minister in the
prime minister's department told The Daily Telegraph. "We have secured
our borders and police and armed forces are there to protect

Abu Sayyaf — which means "bearer of the sword" in Arabic – has links
to both al-Qaeda and fellow regional Islamic separatist groups, Jemaah
Islamiyah and Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

It is based in the restive southern Philippines, but the group has
been active in Malaysia.

Despite currently numbering fewer than 500 men, Abu Sayyaf has a
history of attacks on foreigners for ransom money.

In May 2001 the group kidnapped 20 people, including three Americans,
at a resort in the Philippines. One of the Americans was beheaded,
while a second was shot dead during a rescue attempt over a year

In 2000 the group kidnapped an American on the Philippine island of
Jolo and demanded that the United States release Sheikh Omar Abdel
Rahman and Ramzi Yousef, who were jailed for their involvement in the
1993 World Trade Center bombing.

"We want to fight the American people," an Abu Sayyaf spokesman said
at the time.

Bye Bye Jason Ch’ng, 1993-2010

17th January 2010 is a very sad and tragic Sunday. Chung Ling High School's dragon boat team went out to the sea for training and was hit by strong current and capsized. Then people fell into the water, 2 dead, 4 still missing at this moment (12.53am).

Chung Ling High School was my high school and the saddest thing is that one of the dead, the passed away was Jason Ch'ng, my Leo Club's President! My successor, the president of the club after my year. Oh, that's so sucks man.

4 still missing and I know 2 of them, Brendon and Yi Zhang. Please do pray for them hard, it's more than 12 hours since the thing happened now, very very scary.

Really sucks man. Water are so scary, please don't play in the water and let us pray together. Everything is so unexpected. Oh damn. I want to say f*ck.

By the way, check this out, rescue team damn.

Also on the tragedy, Eric Tan Leong Yit, 17, a friend of a survivor, said his friend was the first to alert the police on the incident as soon as he came ashore.

"However, it took the police 45 minutes to arrive. It seems like the police initially did not believe it was a genuine emergency call," he said at the scene.

In the incident, a teacher and a student drowned and four other students went missing after a dragon boat carrying 18 people capsized in waters about 100 metres offshore Lebuh Macallum here at 10.20am. [nst]

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) lawyer Abdul Razak Musa is the latest high-level personality to insult all handicapped people in Malaysia.

He is reported to said in court in front of Human Rights lawyer Karpal Singh, who now sits permanently in a wheelchair after a road accident, that he "(Musa) can sit down but Karpal cannot stand up."
Has Musa not learnt the message that what happened to Karpal has taught us all? Disability is no respecter of persons. Anyone can be disabled at any time. Even Musa, his parents, wife and children one day.

And if they were, would he utter such words?

Musa may have apologised to Karpal but he owes a big apology to all disabled Malaysian for his kurang ajar (ignorant) remark.

As for Karpal, he is now in a position to be able to understand the deep prejudice all disabled people in Malaysia goes through which he never would have known in his able-bodied life.

24 yrs after Pan Am hijack, Neerja Bhanot killer falls to drone

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 05:11 AM PST

Palestinian terrorist Jamal Saeed Abdul Rahim, killed in a CIA missile strike in Pakistan, was one of the killers of Neerja Bhanot, hero stewardess on Pan Am Flight 73.WASHINGTON: Half of India's population today wasn't born when she died in 1986 in a hail of gunfire on a hijacked plane after courageously saving scores of passengers, a feat for which she was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra in India, Tamgha-e-Insaniyat in Pakistan and the Justice for Crimes Award in the US. Earlier this week, some 24 years after her heroism, one of her killers died a dog's death in the badlands of Pakistan, reportedly shot to pieces in a US drone attack.

The saga of Neerja Bhanot transfixed India at a time where there was no 24-hour news television and it had little to do with the fact that her father was a New Delhi journalist. She was a flight attendant on Pan Am Flight 73 as it headed out of Mumbai to Karachi en route to Frankfurt and onward to New York City. Four armed men dressed as airport security guards stormed the plane in Karachi. The cabin crew managed to alert the pilots, who decamped, effectively grounding the flight.

In the hours-long ordeal that followed, Neerja showed exemplary courage, attested by some 350 passengers who survived the nightmare, although some 20 died and 120 were wounded after hijackers opened fire on them when Pakistani commandos prepared to storm the plane. Among her acts of courage was her refusal to collect US passports and hiding some of them as the hijackers sought to isolate Americans and Indians. She knew they meant business when one of the hijackers pulled Rajesh Kumar, a 29-year-old Indian American California resident to the front of the aircraft, asked him to kneel at the door, and shot him in the head when their demand for a new flight crew was not met.

Neerja died shielding three children from gunfire as a bloody massacre erupted on the plane. The hijackers, who were said to be from the Abu Nidal Organisation, were eventually captured, tried, convicted, and sentenced to death in 1988. But in a Pakistan that became increasingly permissive about terrorism, the sentences were later commuted to life in prison.

In 2001, Zayd Hassan Abd Al-Latif Masud Al Safarini, the hijacker who shot Rajesh Kumar among others, was captured by the FBI in Bangkok after he was released in Pakistan and was on his way back to Jordan. He was taken to the US where he was sentenced to a 160-year prison term he is now serving in Colorado. Four others who were in Pakistan's Adiala jail were freed in January 2008 even as the US fumed about Islamabad's action. The FBI announced a $5 million bounty on their head, pretty much ensuring their days are numbered.

Earlier this week, Pakistani intelligence officials announced that a January 9 missile strike in the North Waziristan tribal region killed Jamal Saeed Abdul Rahim, one of the hijackers. His affiliation is disputed. The FBI's web site lists him as a Palestinian with possible Lebanese citizenship. The Pakistani officials called him an al-Qaida member, but the FBI site says he was a member of the Abu Nidal Palestinian terrorist group. There are no doubts about Neerja's affiliation though. She belongs to India's Hall of Courage. Hat tip : Eye On The World

RPK, Di manamu? Polis Dah Geram...

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 07:56 AM PST

- Sinar Harian

Ulasan GB

Isk, sampai begitu terdesak sekali PDRM hendak menjejaki RPK.

Pangkat polis masing-masing berjela-jela.

Professionalisme polis masih lemah.

Forgiveness in Islam

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 06:08 AM PST

Source: Wapedia (Search Wikipedia)

Islam teaches that Allah  is 'the most forgiving', and is the original source of all forgiveness.

Forgiveness often requires the repentance of those being forgiven.

Depending on the type of wrong committed, forgiveness can come either

  1. directly from Allah,
  2. or from one's fellow man who received the wrong.
  • In the case of divine forgiveness, the asking for divine forgiveness via repentance is important.
  • In the case of human forgiveness, it is important to both forgive, and to be forgiven. [16]

Forgiveness is typically defined as the process of concluding resentment, indignation or anger as a result of a perceived offense, difference or mistake, and/or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution. [1]

The Oxford English Dictionary defines forgiveness as 'to grant free pardon and to give up all claim on account of an offence or debt'.

The concept and benefits of forgiveness have been explored in religious thought, the social sciences and medicine.

Forgiveness may be considered simply in terms of the person who forgives including forgiving themselves, in terms of the person forgiven and/or in terms of the relationship between the forgiver and the person forgiven. In some contexts, forgiveness may be granted without any expectation of restorative justice, and without any response on the part of the offender (for example, one may forgive a person who is incommunicado or dead).

In practical terms, it may be necessary for the offender to offer some form of acknowledgment, apology, and/or restitution, or even just ask for forgiveness, in order for the wronged person to believe himself able to forgive. [1]

Most world religions include teachings on the nature of forgiveness, and many of these teachings provide an underlying basis for many varying modern day traditions and practices of forgiveness. Some religious doctrines or philosophies place greater emphasis on the need for humans to find some sort of divine forgiveness for their own shortcomings, others place greater emphasis on the need for humans to practice forgiveness of one another, yet others make little or no distinction between human and/or divine forgiveness.

Allah does not forgive idol worship (if maintained until death), and He forgives lesser offenses for whomever He wills. Anyone who idolizes any idol beside God has strayed far astray. (Qur'an 4:116)

But if he returns to God and pleads sincerely for forgiveness and abandons worshiping other than the one and only God, He will be forgiven.

The Qur'an never allows for violent behavior on the part of Muslim believers, [17] except in the cases of_

  1. defending one's religion,
  2. one's life,
  3. or one's property.

Outside of this, the Qu'ran makes no allowances for violent behavior. From time to time certain Muslims have interpreted such Qur'anic allowances for "defensive violence" to include what other Muslims have viewed more as unwarranted and overly aggressive violence. This interpretative debate about when to forgive and when to aggressively attack or defend continues to this day within the Muslim community.

The Qur'an makes it clear that, whenever possible, it is better to forgive another than to attack another.

The Qur'an describes the believers (Muslims) as those who, avoid gross sins and vice, and when angered they forgive. (Qur'an 42:37) and says that_

Although the just requital for an injustice is an equivalent retribution, those who pardon and maintain righteousness are rewarded by GOD. He does not love the unjust. (Qur'an 42:40).

To receive forgiveness from God there are three requirements:

  1. Recognizing the offense itself and its admission before God.
  2. Making a commitment not to repeat the offense.
  3. Asking for forgiveness from God.

If the offense was committed against another human being, or against society, a fourth condition is added:

  1. Recognizing the offense before those against whom offense was committed and before God.
  2. Committing oneself not to repeat the offense.
  3. Doing whatever needs to be done to rectify the offense (within reason) and asking pardon of the offended party.
  4. Asking God for forgiveness.

There are no particular words to say for asking forgiveness. However, Muslims are taught many phrases and words to keep repeating daily asking God's forgiveness. For example:

  • Astaghfiru-Allah, "I ask forgiveness from Allah"
  • Subhanaka-Allah humma wa bi hamdika wa ash-hadu al la Ilaha illa Anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk, "Glory be to You, Allah, and with You Praise (thanks) and I bear witness that there is no deity but You, I ask Your forgiveness and I return to You (in obedience)".

Islamic teaching presents the Prophet Muhammad as an example of someone who would forgive others for their ignorance, even those who might have once considered themselves to be his enemies. One example of Muhammad's practice of forgiveness can be found in the Hadith, the body of early Islamic literature about the life of Muhammad.

This account is as follows:

The Prophet was the most forgiving person.

He was ever ready to forgive his enemies. When he went to Ta'if to preach the message of Allah, its people mistreated him, abused him and hit him with stones. He left the city humiliated and wounded. When he took shelter under a tree, the angel of Allah visited him and told him that Allah sent him to destroy the people of Ta'if because of their sin of maltreating their Prophet. Muhammad prayed to Allah to save the people of Ta'if, because what they did was out of their ignorance.

Sarawak PKR Prepares For State Polls, Names Five Potential Candidates

By: Ramjit

SIBU, Jan 17 (Bernama) — Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is getting itself ready to face the next state election.

Its political bureau chief Baharuddin Mohsen said it had identified initially the potential candidates to contest five rural seats.

"They are all professionals. We want to counter the claim that we do not have the material capable of administering the state should we win," he said at a function to announce the formation of the party's Ulu Salim branch here Sunday.

"PKR is ready to shoulder this responsibility. Please give us the chance.

"If we are given the mandate, we will uphold the rule and principles of democracy. We are prepared to be shown the exit by Sarawakians if we fail in the task," he said.

Baharuddin hinted that state PKR Wanita chief Ibi Uding was among the five potential candidates for the state polls.

Ibi is expected to be fielded in Balai Ringin while Angela Jubing may contest in Engkilili.

The others are Richard Lias (in either Ngemah or Machan), Jemat Panjang (Lambir) and Frankie Bedindang Manjah (either Balleh or Pelagus).

"We may also contest the Dudong seat," Baharuddin said.

Later when met by reporters, he declined to comment further, saying he would leave it to state PKR chairman Baru Bian to make the final decision.

He also said that PKR would sit down with the leaders of other political parties in Pakatan Rakyat to discuss matters pertaining to the state polls.

Muslims must avoid being totally immersed in Facebook, Twitter: Rais

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 07:06 AM PST

SEREMBAN,Sat: Malaysians, especially Muslims, must avoid being totally immersed in the internet culture, especially Facebook and Twitter, said Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
He added that facilities like internet cannot be accepted totally because it is a form of business introduced by the West and we are just users.

"We are not saying that they cannot use Facebook or Twitter but when using such facilities they must upkeep the values taught by Islam, Buddhism or Christianity to maintain our culture," he told reporters after opening a Seminar on the 1Malaysia concept here today.

He added that Malaysians who used internet services on social networking sites should be careful with what they see and hear.

"We must be strong in our believes and culture because the identity and image of our country depends on us. They are just selling Facebook, Twitter, L-Band and various other services, even through space, as a product but we do not do such business. We accept all this in a state of cultural shock," he said.

He chided some Malaysians who belittled those who were no savvy of the Facebook and Twitter culture.

"We should not be quick to condemn or look down on those who do not use Facebook. Newspapers are still relevant, so is Facebook, but do not be carried away with everything and disregard the old system," he said.

Rais also praised the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) for its success in tracking down a student from the National Arts Culture and Heritage Academy for posting a public safety threatening comment on Facebook about the recent spate of attacks on churches while discussing the ongoing "Allah" controversy on the popular social networking website.

"Syabas to SKMM for its action in nailing those who used Facebook, Twitter and SMS for the wrong reasons. As a former analyze of the law in the country, I wish to advise the people that they cannot escape from the law for their actions," he said.

Speaking of 1Malaysia, Rais said the Information Department had also conducted a survey on the people''s understanding of the 1Malaysia concept and found 62 per cent of Malaysians understood the 1Malaysia concept.

He added that the government would initiate more programmes featuring the 1Malaysia concept, especially for students. -- Bernama

I concur with Rais. He should seriously look into the Facebook group 'Menentang penggunaan nama Allah oleh golongan bukan Muslim' that are planting the seeds of extremism and discord in young minds. The Muslims in this group are certainly totally immersed in fanning the fire of hatred even to the point of calling for jihad.

When your heart stops

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 04:30 AM PST

Source: Malaysian Mirror by Ummi Nadiah Rosli

KUALA LUMPUR -The crowd went wild as the Portuguese Liga match reached its peak in Guimaraes, with Lisbon's football club Benfica leading 1-0 against Vitoria S.C.

Broadcasted live on television on Jan 25, 2004, Benfica's player, Miklos Feher received a yellow card in the injury time.

The cameras followed the Hungarian on the pitch as he suddenly bent forward, face contorted in pain, and then fell backwards to the ground.

The match was put to a stop as Feher's teammates rushed to his aid and medical personnel soon swarmed over the striker performing CPR.

His teammates were in disbelief over their friend's sudden collapse. It was later announced that Feher, at the age of 24, died from cardiac arrhythmia, also known as sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

The tragic death of Feher, who appeared to be the picture of health is not an isolated case.

SCA occurs when the heart abruptly stops working, and is one of the most common causes of death in developed countries.

It is a condition that causes 350,000 deaths a year in Europe and affects more than 400,000 people in the United States, and accounts for 63 percent of all cardiac related deaths in the U.S.

And according to Dr Razali Omar – Director of Electrophysiology & Pacing Unit, National Heart Institute (IJN) Kuala Lumpur, SCA is a real national threat.

Not a heart attack

Contrary to popular belief, Dr Omar highlighted the important differences of SCA and other cardiovascular diseases.

"SCA is NOT a heart attack, where blockage in blood vessel prevents blood flow to the heart. Lack of blood causes damage to the heart muscle and scar tissue.

"SCA on the other hand happens when the heart's electrical system malfunctions. The heart has a built-in electrical system, and if the heart is not electrically shocked within minutes, death occurs, and only 10 to 20 percent of those who had SCA survive," he said.

He added that in a healthy heart, our very own 'pace-maker' triggers the heartbeat, then electrical impulses run along pathways in the heart causing it to contract in regular in a rhythmic way. When the heart contracts, blood is pumped.

Arrhythmia occurs when the electrical signals that control the heartbeat is delayed or blocked.

Out of rhythm

Heart failure is usually due to damaged or stretched heart muscle, which often impairs the electrical system that controls the normal timing of the heartbeat.

When the body realises that the heart is failing to pump normal amounts of blood, the heart will try to speed up to compensate.

Damaged heart muscle can make the heartbeat become too slow (bradycaria) or too fast (tachycardia) or just irregular. Thus, it is quite common to see heart failure patients have arrhythmia.

Furthermore, the most common cause of cardiac arrests is a form of arrhythmia, known as ventricular fibrillation (VF).

In VF, electrical signals that control the pumping of the heart suddenly become rapid and chaotic. As a result, the lower chambers of the heart, the ventricles, begin to tremble (fibrillate) instead of contracting.

Thus the blood is no longer pumping from the heart to the rest of the body, cutting off supply of oxygen to the brain and the person involved loses consciousness. Unless an emergency shock is delivered to restore its regular rhythm (using a machine known as a defibrillator), death can occur within minutes.

The silent killer

Unlike many heart problems that can be identified by symptoms, SCA is considered to be a silent killer.

Physical or athletic screenings do not usually signal conditions that can cause SCA, thus it can afflict outwardly healthy, active individuals with no known heart disease or other health complications.

But Dr Omar explained that SCA is not a random occurrence and most victims do have complications relating to their health or heart, although they may not know it.

He stated that any heart complications that damage the heart's electrical system can cause arrhythmia. This includes smoking, heavy alcohol intake, use of certain drugs and even emotional stress.

"Those who are at risk of being affected with SCA comprise of 80 per cent of patients with coronary artery disease (condition in which the arteries that supply blood to the heart are narrowed or blocked), 15 percent heart muscle disease and 5 per cent disease of the heart cells. 75 percent of the people who die of SCA show signs of a previous heart attack."

And with no warning signals, 95 percent of all SCA victims will die on the scene, and in the U.S, more than 70 percent of VF victims die before reaching the hospital.

Shocks to survive

In the absence of symptoms, prevention is of utmost priority to reduce the statistics for SCA deaths.

There are several options, Dr Omar said, among them is medication and the automatic external defibrillator (AED) which is a portable electronic device that stops cardiac arrhythmia by shocking the heart. Some countries provide AED for public use, especially in public places such as parks, schools and sport centres.

The implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), are also very successful in preventing SCD in certain high-risk patients.

Implanted under the skin, the ICD monitors the heart to detect any abnormal rhythms and delivers an electric shock to restore the heart's normal rhythm.
It can also function as a pacemaker if the heart beats too slowly.

For congestive heart failure caused by complications with the heart muscle, cardiac resynchronization therapy are utilised. The therapy applies the use of a specialised pace-maker to re-coordinate action of the right and left ventricle in patients with heart failure.

Learning CPR a must

pic MM

Every second is a ticking bomb for SCA victims. With every minute that passes, the chances of survival from SCA decreases by 7 to 10 percent.

While more than 70 percent of all sudden cardiac arrest victims are saved by defibrillators, Dr Omar advised that everyone should learn CPR if there is no defibrillator nearby.

"Of course, CPR is definitely life-saving, and important to maintain brain integrity of SCA victims. It doesn't matter whether you're in school or an elderly, CPR should be learnt by all. SCA can happen anytime, anywhere."

With patient demographics provided by the National Cardiovascular Disease Database point out that the minimum age for heart failure in the country is 18 years old and 100 years old being the oldest, it is best to take heed to that advise.

How Can Death Due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest Be Prevented?

Ways to prevent death due to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) differ depending on whether:

  • You've already had SCA
  • You've never had SCA but are at high risk for the condition
  • You've never had SCA and have no known risk factors for the condition

For People Who Have Survived Sudden Cardiac Arrest

If you've already had SCA, you're at high risk of having it again. Research shows that an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) reduces the chances of dying from a second SCA.

An ICD is surgically placed under the skin in your chest or abdomen. The device has wires with electrodes on the ends that connect to your heart's chambers. The ICD monitors your heartbeat.

If the ICD detects a dangerous heart rhythm, it gives an electric shock to restore the heart's normal rhythm. Your doctor may give you medicine to limit irregular heartbeats that can trigger the ICD.

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator

The illustration shows the location of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator in the upper chest. The electrodes are inserted into the heart through a vein.

The illustration shows the location of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator in the upper chest. The electrodes are inserted into the heart through a vein.

An ICD isn't the same as a pacemaker. The devices are similar, but have some differences. Pacemakers only give off low-energy electrical pulses. They're often used to treat less dangerous heart rhythms, such as those that occur in the upper chambers of the heart. Most new ICDs work as both pacemakers and ICDs.

For People at High Risk for a First Sudden Cardiac Arrest

If you have severe coronary artery disease (CAD), you're at increased risk for SCA. This is especially true if you've recently had a heart attack.

Your doctor may prescribe a type of medicine called a beta blocker to help lower your risk for SCA. Other treatments for CAD, such as angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting, also may lower your risk for SCA.

Your doctor also may recommend an ICD if your risk for SCA is very high.

For People Who Have No Known Risk Factors for Sudden Cardiac Arrest

CAD seems to be the cause of most cases of SCA in adults. CAD also is a major risk factor for angina (chest pain or discomfort) and heart attack, and it contributes to other heart problems.

Following a healthy lifestyle can help you lower your risk for CAD, SCA, and other heart problems.

Healthy Diet and Physical Activity

A healthy diet is an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle. Choose a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains; half of your grains should come from whole-grain products.

Choose foods that are low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. Healthy choices include lean meats, poultry without skin, fish, beans, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.

Choose and prepare foods with little sodium (salt). Too much salt can raise your risk for high blood pressure. Recent studies show that following the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan can lower blood pressure.

Choose foods and beverages that are low in added sugar. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.

Aim for a healthy weight by staying within your daily calorie needs. Balance the calories you take in with the calories you use while doing physical activity. Be as physically active as you can.

Some people should get medical advice before starting or increasing physical activity. For example, talk to your doctor if you have a chronic (ongoing) health problem, are on medicine, or have symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness. Your doctor can suggest types and amounts of physical activity that are safe for you.

For more information on following a healthy diet, see the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI's) Aim for a Healthy Weight Web site, "Your Guide to a Healthy Heart," and "Your Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure With DASH." All of these resources provide general information about healthy eating.

For more information about physical activity, see NHLBI's "Your Guide to Physical Activity and Your Heart."

Other Lifestyle Changes

Other lifestyle changes also can help lower your risk for SCA. Examples include:

  • Quitting smoking. Talk to your doctor about programs and products that can help you quit. Also, try to avoid secondhand smoke.
  • Losing weight if you're overweight or obese.
  • Treating other health problems, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and diabetes.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Key Facts

  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for an estimated 325,000 deaths each year
  • In SCA, the heart abruptly and unexpectedly ceases to function (cardiac arrest). It is an "electrical problem" caused by a heart rhythm disorder called Ventricular Fibrillation (VF). In SCA, the heart is no longer able to pump blood to the rest of the body.
  • SCA is NOT a heart attack – a condition technically known as a myocardial infarction (MI). MI is a "plumbing problem" in which a blockage in a blood vessel interrupts the flow of blood to the heart causing an "infarct" – an area of dead heart muscle. SCA may, however, occur in association with a heart attack.
  • VF occurs when the electrical signals that control the pumping ability (contractions) of the lower chambers of the heart (ventricles) suddenly become rapid and chaotic. The ventricles begin to quiver and can not longer pump blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
  • SCA is NOT a random event. Although it may occur in outwardly healthy people, most victims DO have heart disease or other health problems, often without being aware of it.
  • Without emergency help, SCA leads to death within minutes.
  • Victims of cardiac arrest can be saved if a defibrillator device is immediately available to deliver an electric shock to restore the heart to its normal rhythm.
  • People who are at high risk for SCA may be treated with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), devices that are implanted under the skin. ICDs monitor the heart's rhythm and automatically deliver a short, high-energy shock when the individual develops an irregular heart rhythm that may lead to SCA.
  • Studies have shown that ICDs are the best way to prevent cardiac arrest in certain groups of patients who are at high risk.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Statistics
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming an estimated 325,000 lives each year.
  • SCA kills 1,000 people a day or one person every two minutes.
  • SCA most often occurs in patients with heart disease, especially those who have congestive heart failure and have had a heart attack.1
  • It is estimated that 95 percent of victims of cardiac arrest die before they reach a hospital or other source of emergency help.
  • As many as 75 percent of people who die of SCA show signs of a previous heart attack. Eighty percent have signs of coronary artery disease.
  • SCAs accounted for 10,460 (75.4 percent) of all 13,873 cardiac disease deaths in persons aged 35-44 years, and the proportion of cardiac arrests that occurred out-of-hospital increased with age, from 5.8 percent in persons aged 0-4 years to 61.0 percent in persons aged >85 years.2
  • SCAs accounted for 63.7 percent of all cardiac arrests among whites, 62.3 percent among African Americans, 59.8 percent among American Indians/Alaska Natives, 55.8 percent among Asians/Pacific Islanders, and 54.2 percent among Hispanics. Whites had the highest proportion of cardiac arrests out-of-hospital, and African Americans had the highest proportion of cardiac arrests in an Emergency Department or dead on arrival.3
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), deaths from sudden cardiac arrest increased 10 percent (from 2,719 in 1989 to 3,000 in 1996) in people between the ages of 15 and 34. In young women, the death rate from SCA increased 30 percent. African Americans are more likely to die from SCA than whites.
  • Wisconsin, Idaho, and Utah have the highest percentage of cardiac arrests.4

TGNA : Kelantan Yang Aman Damai Bagi Semua Agama

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 06:07 AM PST

(Tafsir Pimpinan Ar-Rahman, Surah Az-Zumar, juz 24:38)

-blog tok guru

Polls on Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad extended to the year 2020

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 04:48 AM PST

The last day of the polls was to be on the 15th February 2010. As I was observing the count as people polled, a brain wave came and it struck. Why not use the polls to find out what kind of a legacy our Great Leader will leave us.The polls are a continuation of the previous, with some slight editting. It will run until the year 2020 or until the demise of our Great Leader, which ever comes earlier. I of course wish him a long life so that my dream of our Great Leader seeing the 'Pakatan Rakyat' in Putrajaya be fullfilled. Of course I too would like to see him being 'selcatted', that is my fervent wish for our Great Leader.

I was a bit long winded there. Okay the polls is 'What would you consider Tun (Dr) Mahathir Mohamad to be? This will be his legacy when he kicks the bucket.

1. The Father of Democracy.
2. The Father of Technology.
3. The Father of Development.
4. Father of modern Malaysia.
5. Saviour of the Malays.
6. Father of corruption.
7. Father of all racists.
8. Father of cronyism.
9. Dictator.
10. Destroyer of Institutions.

You guys, I know would be spoilt for choice. Well, being the sporting dude I am, you are allowed to tick 5 answers. The poll is on the left side bar of this blog. Happy polling!

Menteri Tak Ada Apa-apa, Polis Yang Lebih-lebih

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 04:45 AM PST

- Bernama

Armani: I will never sell my empire

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 03:20 AM PST

Armani's empire is worth RM8.2 billion a year. — Reuters pic

MILAN, Jan 16 — Giorgio Armani will never sell his fashion empire and has no plans to hand over any of his workload, the 75-year old designer was quoted as saying today as his autumn/winter fashion shows kicked off.

Armani — whose business is worth around US$2.4 billion (RM8.2 billion) a year in sales — has recently delegated more responsibility to non-family members and last month said "there comes a time when you must hand it over."

That added to speculation about his health since a bout of hepatitis left him frail last year, and Armani himself has kept investors guessing on the future of the company, at times hinting at a bourse listing and at other times signalling he could sell.

"I will never sell because I don't need to and I don't want to," he told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper in an interview published on the day of the autumn/winter menswear show for his Emporio Armani line.

"And I'm not stepping aside either, as long as I can, touch wood, keep up this pace," he added.

"I don't give a damn about a super-golden pension, I wouldn't know what to do with it."

The white-haired designer who started his own collection over 30 years ago is one of the best-known designers in the global fashion industry and his business also takes in interior design, hotels and perfumes.

"This is my life, I don't have any other and I don't want any other. If I could, the only thing I would change is my age," he told Corriere della Sera.

Armani told the newspaper that the hotel he designed in Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, was "a special thing ... a sort of monument to what I have done in my life."

The hotel spans 36 floors and includes five restaurants, Armani said.

The Burj Khalifa opened on Jan 4. It was developed by Emaar Properties — a venture 31.2 per cent owned by the Dubai government, which is struggling with a huge debt pile.

Puad Zakarshi Diselar Kerana Tak Semak Fakta

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 04:20 AM PST

Katanya, apabila dasar pengsiswazahan semua guru dimulakan, Kabinet telah menetapkan bahawa IPGM (Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia) melatih guru siswazah sekolah rendah manakala IPTA pula terus melatih guru siswazah sekolah menengah.

Beliau berkata, IPTA sentiasa bertindak mengikut keperluan kritikal negara dan berusaha melahirkan graduan-graduan dalam bidang-bidang keperluan termasuk dalam bidang ilmu pendidikan.

"Sebagai Pengerusi Majlis Dekan Pendidikan IPTA, saya sangat-sangat berharap semua pihak menyemak dahulu fakta sebelum mengeluarkan kenyataan kerana ia akan memberi tanggapan negatif terhadap kerajaan dan seterusnya mengelirukan rakyat," katanya. -BERNAMA

Budaya "Cah Keting" Sudah Lama Wujud Dalam PAS - Mohd Puad

Sinar Harian report on OKU protest on Friday against MPS

ILTC tuntut MPS sedia kemudahan OKU

"Kios perniagaan MPS pula dibina terlalu kecil.

Peruntukan bawah Jabatan Kejuruteraan MPS
