Highway Robbery: Another Update

Highway Robbery: Another Update

Highway Robbery: Another Update

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:57 AM PST

I was kind of hoping this case would be resolved by now, considering it's been just about a week since I first contacted RHB Bank. But there's been no official word from them beyond messages from their Corporate Comms guy that he hasn't heard back from HQ yet, and assurances that he's on the case. That was the last couple of days. Today: nothing. Meanwhile, Hanim's agreed to a meeting with someone from RHB's PJ Business Centre. I'm not sure what will come out of that, since it seems to me the bank is fixated on the dispute over the keys without acknowledging the bigger picture of the carjacking. But it was Hanim's car that was taken, and Hanim's keys; if she wants to have a meeting with RHB's PJ Business Centre people (supposedly now the repossessor won't be there, which is a relief), that's entirely up to her. She said she just wants this to be over, so she's going to attend the meeting. That's understandable. I want this to be over too.

I'm certainly not letting go of this just yet, though. Even if Hanim decides to accept it and move on, the fact remains that my wife was traumatised by someone who was working on behalf of RHB Bank. The fact that she wasn't actually hurt is a relief but it doesn't mean this isn't serious. She could have been hurt, along with the child she's carrying. She's okay physically, but there are a whole lot of ways that incident could have gone differently. I'd rather not think of the possibilities; unfortunately, Leen can't help but think of them. And I can't help but fear that real change isn't going to come about until someone is hurt or even killed during one of these bank-sanctioned carjackings. Considering what I've been hearing from people since that incident, I think it's not unrealistic to imagine that the chances of this happening are disturbingly high, since people representing other banks also repossess cars in this manner.

The Association of Hire Purchase Companies Malaysia, the organisation with which car repossessors in Malaysia must be registered, has a Code of Ethics on Repossession, which I linked to in my first post on this issue. Interestingly enough, RHB Bank provides a copy of this code of ethics on their website:

1. As far as possible the number of authorized repossessors must be minimized unless circumstances warrant any additional assistance.
2. Repossessors should only gain entry into premises with the knowledge and consent of the occupant.
3. Repossessors should be well mannered and dress decently. They should ensure the practice of professionalism and dignity in carrying out their work.
4. The use of strong arm tactics of any kind is strictly prohibited in the performance of their work.
5. At the time of repossession, the repossessors should give a standard notice to the hirer informing him of the following:
The address and telephone number of the finance company and the authorized officers he/she can contact immediately to resolve any problems.
The repossessors must give a reasonable time to the hirer to inspect the vehicle and remove his personal items and belongings.
6. As far as possible repossession should be undertaken in the presence of the hirer or any person authorized to that car.
7. Repossessors should at all times act in accordance with the laws and regulations in the performance of their work.
8. All repossessors should be given and briefed on the Code of Ethics On Repossession and abide by its terms. They should also observe any other Code of Ethics introduced by the Association of Hire Purchase Companies Malaysia, the Association of Finance Companies Malaysia and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs from time to time.

Number four looks pretty black and white to me. I'd say carjacking falls under "strong arm tactics", and that the code of ethics has definitely been breached in this case. But is this code of ethics legally binding, or is it just a guideline? Who should be held accountable? The repossessor/carjacker, Nathan A/L Supramaniam? The company he works for, PJ Auto Mart? Or the financial institution that ordered the repossession, RHB Bank? Someone needs to take responsibility for this.

I suppose if any meaningful action — and any real change — is to take place, it will have to come from the top; in this case the top is the bank. But maybe we shouldn't be expecting any banks to make the necessary changes on their own. In the world of Malaysian banking , the top spot is occupied by Bank Negara, the National Bank. I was advised to go straight to them by a friend a couple of days ago; that's probably exactly what we should do. Heck, we should have done that in 2003 when AM Bank swept our fraud case under the carpet. Another option is to go to the AHPCM, or to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

First, though, let's see what comes out of that meeting.

slow down on blogging

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 09:13 AM PST

these days i have to slow down on blogging because of my eye problem… thus you'll see no daily update from me.  don't worry. i'll be temorary… until my eyes are better.

about 2 weeks ago, i suddenly notice my eyes is full of mucus (the medical term is 'rheum', what we call in chinese 'eye shit' if literally translated!).  sometimes it will be there so much that it sort of cloud my vision. i have to take it out now and then. i notice this usualy happened in the afternoon when i'm at the computer in office.

i checked out on the web about eye mucus and read that it usually occured during sleep… found out about the mucus after waking up. but to me, it occured while i was wide awake! then as i read further it says one of the cause is staring at the computer for too long a period. aha! i guess hat was it! i had been staring at the computer too long. all 8 hours at office, then come back home, from 10.00pm onward right to bed time (2.00am) stare at computer again.  it's almost like all the hours i'm awake i'm staring at the computer. i noticed too it could partly be because of the lighiting. in my office, i just move cubicle and the lighting on the computer screen looks bad. however past few days i notice, my eyes also feel cloudy and like 'hoarse' when at home, so it could not be due to the lighting. i will have to see the doctor this morning and find out what's wrong. hopefully nothing serious.

Wilders Wants Van Gogh's Murderer to Testify at His Trial

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 07:32 AM PST

Wilders is being accused of discrimination and incitement to hatred over his claims linking the Koran to violence. So he wants Van Gogh's killer, who claims that he acted purely in the name of Islam and according to Koran, to testify at his trial.

Why is Geert Wilders experiencing this? One of the reasons is due the fact that he produced the short movie called "Fitna". Now some people liked Fitna and some people didn't. That's a matter of choice. Parts of Fitna – which is a compilation of documentary footage – are very disturbing. And very offensive indeed. The clips of Muslim clerics calling for the murder of infidels. Very offensive. The clips of Muslims holding banners saying 'God bless Hitler'. Very offensive. The clip of a three-year-old Muslim girl indoctrinated and brain-washed to describe Jews as 'Apes and Pigs'. Very offensive. The passage of the Koran, Surah 47, verse 4: 'Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers in fight, smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly on them.' Very offensive.

Wilders didn't say them. He is being tried for pointing out the fact that some – in some cases many – Muslims do. If there are to be prosecutions they should be of the clerics and leaders who advocate this nightmarish version of Islam. But not of Wilders. More here..

(CNSNews.com) – As the trial of Dutch anti-Islamist lawmaker Geert Wilders resumes Wednesday, the crucial question will be whether the court agrees to his request to have a Muslim extremist and convicted murderer testify.

Wilders, who faces charges of discrimination and incitement to hatred over his claims linking the Koran to violence, wants the court to hear from an extremist who cited the Islamic text to justify his crime. Mohammed Bouyeri is serving a life sentence for murdering Dutch film director Theo van Gogh, who had stoked controversy with a documentary about the treatment of women under Islam.Van Gogh was stabbed and shot to death on a street in Amsterdam street in 2004. In a note left pinned to his body with a knife, Bouyeri threatened to kill another person reviled by extremist Muslims in Europe – Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somalia-born Dutch politician who worked with Van Gogh on his film.

The lengthy note, which also warned that America, Europe and the Netherlands would be destroyed, included numerous references to the Koran.Bouyeri, a Dutchman of Moroccan origin, had earlier penned another open letter posted on a Dutch Web site, again quoting from the Koran, threatening Wilders this time and declaring, "May Allah destroy you."During his 2005 trial, Bouyeri carried a copy of the Koran, told the court he had acted purely in the name of his religion, and displayed no regret for the murder. Arab Health 2010: Malaysian-made disposable circumcision device arouses interest of trade visitors

Malaysian-Made Device Arouses Interest Of Trade Visitors

By Muin Abdul Majid

DUBAI, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- A Malaysian-made disposable circumcision device piqued the interest of visitors at the recently-concluded Arab Health 2010 exhibition here.

Judging from the favourable response, Machu Picchu Medicare Sdn Bhd Marketing Manager Arifabillah Idris had good reason to be excited about the prospects of marketing the product in the Middle East region.

He described his company's participation in the show under the umbrella of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation as an eye opener.

"This is the first time that we've come to this part of the world. The device is being marketed so far in Indonesia, Australia and Sweden," he told Bernama.

Arifabillah said he received inquiries from several parties, many keen on becoming distributors of the product in the region.

"We got inquiries from places like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Yemen and Pakistan, among others. There's also a request for us to present the product at an event in Saudi Arabia," he said.

"I'm very excited about this market. I brought with me quite a lot of samples but I've none left," he said of the product first introduced in 2005.

He explained that among the advantages of the item was that it would take lesser time for doctors to perform circumcision on patients but faster time to heal compared to conventional methods.

"The beauty of the product is that patients could straight away put on their trousers, for example, after undergoing the procedure if they so wish.

"There's less bleeding and minimal do's and don'ts. But some people may opt to be more conventional in dealing with the recuperation process," he said.

Available in several sizes, the device is backed by research and development conducted by Universiti Malaya.

Arifabillah said his Kuala Lumpur-based company shipped around 10,000 disposable circumcision devices per month.

Protest Rock Tercool Cranberries!

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:02 AM PST

It's the same old theme since 1916″.

Selangor to build modern pound

By CHRISTINA LOW
christinalow@thestar.com.my

THE Selangor government will build a modern pound to house stray animals caught by local councils.
The pound, which will have proper facilities for animal care, would alleviate the problem of overcrowding in some of the pounds managed by the local authorities in Selangor.

Selangor health, estate workers affairs, poverty eradication and caring government committee chairman Dr Xavier Jeyakumar said the state government had sought the assistance of the land office to provide a suitable area for the pound.

The modern pound would be utilised mainly by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) and Klang Municipal Council (MPK) as well as their neighbouring councils.
"When ready, the pound would not only be a home to all the stray cats and dogs but also provide care for the animals requiring rehabilitation," Dr Jeyakumar said.

He added that the new pound could also be opened to students to enable them to see how animals were taken care of.

Dr Jeyakumar said the number of stray cats and dogs in the pounds increased during every festive holiday period as owners neglected their pets when they left for holidays or headed back to their hometowns.
"The stray animals caught by the local governments in Selangor number in the thousands each month.
"If you are not prepared to take on the responsibility of caring for your pet, you should think twice before taking them home," he said.

Many pets were also not micro-chipped, hence making it difficult for the authorities to inform their owners of their lost pets.

He added that the long-term plan was to work on some sort of licensing for cats and to make micro-chipping compulsory for all pets.

Dr Jeyakumar was speaking at a press conference attended by animal welfare NGOs to inform the public of the ways they could care for their pets during the upcoming festive break.
Save A Stray founder Jacqueline Tsang said firecrackers could pose a danger to pets, especially dogs, as the noise they emitted was about 110 to 115 decibels, which was several times louder than the normal noise levels that the animals could withstand.

During such times, Tsang said the animals would bark endlessly, run and dig holes in the grass, putting all their effort into trying to get away from the noise.

"If the owners are not around during the period, these animals would run out of the house and would not be found by their owners when they returned home," said Tsang, who advised owners to either check their pets into a boarding centre or keep them in their house to avoid the problem.

PAWS shelter manager Edward Lim said that the last festive period, the shelter received more than 200 cats as the owners could no longer cope with caring for them.

"It's not fair to them (cats and dogs) that when we are happily celebrating an occasion, these poor animals have to suffer and get surrendered," Lim said.

Lim suggested that pet owners look into neutering their pets to prevent overpopulation as the procedure only cost between RM90 and RM200.

The meeting was also attended by MBPJ councillor Anthony Thanasayan, who also chairs the Canine Advisory Team (Cat) in the council, Petpositive assistant secretary Shenaaz Khan, resident Pat Lim and Klang Municipal Council (MPK) acting health director Zulkifli Abbas.

Thanasayan said the MBPJ had formed the Cat team and the concept was now being introduced to the MPK. The council hopes that with the team, it can prevent animal mistreatment and be able to educate pet owners on ways of caring for their pets as the team works closely with NGOs.

Laporan Kes Liwat Saiful Berlebihan Bawa Padah Kepada Utusan

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:34 AM PST

Peguamcara Negara II, Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden bagaimanapun berkata, apa yang berlaku hanyalah "laporan kurang tepat" tetapi Karpal Singh bertegas ianya satu perbuatan menghina mahkamah.

Apabila disambung semula, hakim Mohamad Zabidin memberitahu pasukan pembelaan Anwar supaya membuat laporan polis jika terdapat perbuatan menghina mahkamah. -MSTAR

Pilihanraya Kampus Sepatutnya Lebih Telus

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:20 AM PST

Anwar Ibrahim speaks

Rakyat Menjadi Hakim Kebejatan Regim Zalim Ini

A low note for Malaysia as Anwar trial starts

February 4th, 2010
Author: Ernest Z. Bower, CSIS

For anyone watching Malaysian politics over the last five years, the message is clear – people want their political system to move on to represent a modern Malaysia and more sophisticated electorate. The old ways and anachronistic political structures, as well as some of the personalities that have become inextricably identified with those structures, are being encouraged by fed-up voters to make way for new politics.

This week has seen the start of the second trial of former Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat Party (PKR), Anwar Ibrahim. It is a sad day for Malaysian politics because the fact of the trial itself is a result of the old politics of Malaysia panicking in the face of the inevitable – change. The most recent allegations against Anwar came amidst clear signals that voters were dissatisfied with governance and would no longer rubber stamp the ruling coalition at the ballot boxes. Whatever the mechanism was, the old system blinked and snapped him up on new charges of sodomy.

The trial can rightly be seen as part of a tragic last stand by those who fear change and reform. That group no longer seems to include Prime Minister Najib Razak. Recent statements and moves to begin serious reforms of his ruling party, the United Malays Nasional Organization (UMNO), suggest that he has internalised the need for the party to change to survive politically. The Anwar trial will not be helpful in that regard, because to enact real change, a viable opposition is a helpful if not necessary condition. Najib has to convince a majority of the UMNO faithful that they must adapt to survive. That argument won't come easy to a generation who had become addicted to politics of entitlement.

Even from a Machiavellian UMNO political perspective, prosecuting Anwar risks making him, once again, a political martyr and beacon for those seeking a new way. Left to his own devices, Anwar promised to be a strong opposition voice, but unlikely to wrest control of the political leadership of the country. He is leading an unlikely coalition of conservative Muslims, left-leaning Chinese and vibrant reformers.

Most countries in Southeast Asia are in the process of working through historic political evolutions. Indonesia's path to change is playing out most clearly, with the downfall of Suharto and the breathtaking audacity of the introduction of democracy in the region's largest country. Thailand is going through a less linear but no less dramatic change where forces are aligned similarly in some ways to those in Malaysia – one side wanting to preserve the status quo and others demanding new political structures and broader engagement. Vietnam is deep into its political cycle ahead of the January 2011 Communist Party Congress, with conservatives pushing hard on the reform-minded government of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. The Philippines has elections coming in May. Even Singapore is undergoing a quiet challenge to its post-colonial political structure dominated by the People's Action Party (PAP), with indications that younger voters want new channels for political expression including, perhaps, an opposition that can speak freely and make the case for alternative approaches.

Putting the course of political evolution in Malaysia in a regional context, the country has a great opportunity to move ahead by implementing needed reforms, regaining full political stability and concentrating on its competitiveness and economic growth.

However, victimising Anwar is as counterproductive for Malaysia's political progress as it is for the efforts of his political adversaries in UMNO to reform and regain political dominance. Therefore, the start of the trial this week was a sad and ironic benchmark in Malaysian political history.

Desa Damansara Condominium: The 'SODOMY' scene - with beautful scenery!

Saiful: I told doc Anwar sodomised me
S. Tamarai Chelvi

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 4, 2010): The High Court heard today that Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan told a Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) doctor frankly that he was there for an examination as he had been sodomised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan (R) and his father Azlan Mohamad Lazim (2R)
stand with court members at the main entrance of Desa Damansara
Condominium, where they say the alleged sodomy took place.
Saiful, 25, a former personal aide to Anwar, who was testifying on the second day at Anwar's trial, said he had gone to two hospitals earlier before HKL where he registered himself at about 3pm at the Outpatient Ward, for a medical examination.

He said he saw a female Indian doctor but told her that he was shy as she is a woman. The doctor then suggested that he see a male doctor, whose room was next to her.

Saiful said he then met with the male doctor, whose name was Dr Daniel.

"When I met Dr Daniel, I was tired and I told him frankly that I came to HKL for an examination as I had been sodomised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," said Saiful.

"He was a bit shocked," said Saiful, adding that the doctor then wrote a note for him to go to the Emergency Ward at One Stop Crisis Centre (OCSS).

He then went to OCSS where he was visited by doctors, including one who took his blood pressure.

Saiful said when he told a doctor he wants a specific examination as he had been sodomised.

When advised by the doctor to lodge a police report because without the police report, an examination could not be conducted on him, Saiful said he told the doctor he wanted to lodge a report.

Asked by Solicitor-General II Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden how he got a form to lodge a police report, Saiful said two police personnel, one female and male came to him with a form.

Q: You did not call the police?

A: No

He said four doctors, including three men and a pregnant female doctor and a few nurses then examined him at about 9pm in the presence of ASP Jude Pereira.

Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan (right) speaks to the court members at the living
room of Unit 11-5-1 of the Desa Damansara Condominium.
Earlier, Saiful told the court that on June 28, 2008, he went to Tawakkal Kuala Lumpur Hospital but was told that it was a half-day. Accompanied by his uncle, Tuah Mohamad Ali, he then went to Hospital Pusrawi where he saw Dr Mohamad Osman Abdul Hamid and complained to him that he was having stomach ache and pain at the rectum.

He said while being examined by the doctor who had told him to take off his pants and lie on the bed, he told the doctor that he had been sodomised.

Saiful said the doctor immediately stopped examining him and told him to wear his pants, after which the doctor gave him advice.

The doctor said the hospital does not have the facilities to conduct a forensic examination and that a report from private hospital would not be accepted as evidence in court.

Saiful said the doctor also told him to go to a government hospital and suggested HKL.

At the court yesterday, Saiful also identified Dr. Mohamad Osman. The court was also shown CCTV recordings of Saiful getting into and out of a lift, to the fifth floor of Desa Damansara Condominium.

Saiful, who was seen holding a bag in the recordings, was asked to confirmed that it was him. He also identified several photos of himself. -- theSun

Flying.. long haul

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 06:45 AM PST

Its been a while that I posted anything here. So I guess an update is in order.
I recently flew to the US of A on a work assignment. I was adviced of the trip a few week prior. The first thing that came to my mind was not so much about the assignment itself but the flight to and fro.

One thing about me, I don't get jittery or quesy on flights, but its the sitting down for many hours in a confined space that really gets to me.

Let me explain.
I got up at about 4.30 to get ready, and the cab duly arrived to pick me up and transported me to KLIA for my 9.00 a.m flight. I took the Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong. Why to Hong Kong, simply because I wanted to arrive in San Francisco instead of Los Angeles.

About the flight, its a 3 hour trip, which I can stand, its ok, my butt is not hurt. There's the inflight entertainment to while my time, took my nap after the meal served. Uneventful flight altogether... By the way the MAS flight attendants are a wee bit more attractive.

3 hours of sitting down and no cig for the whole trip, now that is a little bit trying but I can manage.

As we landed in Hong Kong, I made sure that I went to the right terminal and found the gate, but prior to being at the gate, found the smoking lounge. Had my dose of cigs and a bit more to prepare me for the 12 hour flight to San Francisco.

By the way, the books in the terminal are far more expensive than the ones found in KLIA.

Boarding the flight to US was a bit of a hassle, we got to remove our shoes, their security people going through my carry on bags, and of all thing, my gastric medicine, in liquid form cannot be taken on board with me... so into the bin it went. But it was ok in KLIA though.

Boarded, aisle seat as requested, at least I need not share one arm rest with the person next to me.

Now its a 12 hour flight, at least, as it was announced earlier.... by the 3rd hour my butt is sore. Used the blanket under my butt, part of the way it was not sufficient. The small pillow went under my butt.

While most passengers were asleep, I can't. Read, watched the movies, walked around the cabin (I was also afraid that the US Airmarshall was on board and observing me...) I am harmless my man, its just my sore butt and swollen legs.. I need to move around.

A wonderful surprise was that Cathay Pacific put this cart of goodies near the galley, peanuts, apples, cookies, soda (including my Light Coke) for your helping...

It was such a relief to have landed in Frisco......

But this was where I was heading.... Another 2 hour of flight and it was delayed by 2 hours because of the storm in San Francisco.. more waiting, more sitting, more whiling.....

Salt Lake City was where I was heading... that will be another story altogether.

Wanita Menjerit "Oi Saiful, Aku Sumpah U Tak Boleh Buang Air Besar 10 Hari"

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 05:20 AM PST

Saksi pertama perbicaraan kes liwat kedua Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Mohd.

Oi Saiful, aku sumpah 'you' tak boleh buang air besar sepuluh hari."

Mahkamah ditangguhkan sehingga jam 9.30 pagi esok.

Untukmu

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 01:16 AM PST

This song rather brought a lot of memories. Kian Leong, if you are reading this, I remember we sang this song together during our secondary school days, Form 3 or 4 if I am not mistaken.

And all of sudden, someone I chatted on MSN today triggered me to listen to KRU's songs again. And this particular song's lyrics matched the message that I want to convey to a person far far away.

Enjoy the song...
