Malaysia is Getting Very Unstable - PERC

Malaysia is Getting Very Unstable - PERC

KUALA LUMPUR - Events since New Year's Day have given the Hong Kong-based Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (Perc) the impression that "pressures are building and the entire situation is becoming much more unstable" in Malaysia.

In a report released last month, Perc also asserted that a group of elite minorities were dominating the national agenda to the extent that it was hurting Malaysia's attractiveness to investors.

The consultancy, which also publishes reports on the risk ratings of other Asian countries, said it is "probable" that no other country in the region is suffering from as much bad press as Malaysia.

Among the developments that caught its attention were the theft of military jet engines, detention of terror suspects from a number of African and Middle East countries following warnings that militants were planning attacks on foreigners at resorts in Sabah, renewed ethnic and religious "violence" that included arson at some churches and desecration of mosques, and controversy over the integrity of key institutions like the judicial system in the sodomy trial of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The report noted that the government is blaming the international media for exaggerated reporting and Prime Minister Najib Razak had argued that the focus should not be on the fringe groups that are causing problems but on the majority of Malaysians who are coming together to condemn the recent acts of violence following the "Allah" controversy.

However, Perc maintained that Mr Razak was " wrong in saying that Malaysia is being defined by the way the majority of the population are coming together. It is being defined by the ability of a minority to dominate the political agenda, shaping policy and compromising the reputation of key institutions."

The report said that the elites from the United Malays National Organisation "who have been able to profit disproportionately from the policies of the ruling coalition" deserved the most attention.

"Their commitment to democracy is a major question mark. If they blatantly manipulate the system in order to remain in power, the public backlash could be worse than anything Malaysia has seen in its modern history."

Perc added Mr Najib's strategy is looking "increasingly unworkable" in defusing pressures in the country. "He is trying to be all things to all people, but in the end he might satisfy no one."

Malaysia's risk index as calculated by Perc rose slightly from 5.24 in December to 5.4 in January, out of a possible maximum risk score of 10. But it remained well below the risk index in January last year which stood at 6.42. The Malaysian Insider

Anti-Semitic bigotry by Mahathir Again

Posted: 13 Feb 2010 09:46 AM PST

A Jan. 21 item in the Jakarta Globe from Indonesia reported a speech by Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister of Malaysia, at a conference in support of Al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Mahathir was quoted stating that the lack of progress by the Obama administration in ending the war in Afghanistan, or in closing the terrorist detention centre at Guantanamo, was due to the "forces in the United States which prevent the president from doing some things. One of the forces is the Jewish lobby."

He said Jews "had always been a problem in European countries. They had to be confined to ghettos and periodically massacred. But still they remained, they thrived and they held whole governments to ransom."

Moreover, he continued, "Even after their massacre by the Nazis of Germany, they survived to continue to be a source of even greater problems for the world."

These despicable words are not from the tongue of any common run-of-the-mill bigot. Mahathir was the elected head of government from 1981 to 2003 of one the more economically successful Muslim-majority countries.

The former prime minister's remarks were not some carelessly expressed random thoughts. In October 2003, Mahathir was the chairman of the Tenth Islamic Summit Conference as Malaysia hosted the more than 50-member Organization of Islamic Countries. His opening address to the assembled Muslim leaders was punctuated with bigoted references to Jews and Israel.

Mahathir said, for instance, "The Europeans killed six million Jews out of 12 million. But today the Jews rule this world by proxy. They get others to fight and die for them." He received, the press reported, a standing ovation from Muslim leaders and none disowned his anti-Semitic views.

Such hate-filled public statements against Jews and Israel by Mahathir, or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, or the leaders of Hamas, Hezbollah, Taliban, al-Qaida and member states of the Arab League, are indicative of how deep-seated and widespread is anti-Semitism across the Muslim world.

Since political-religious leaders promote this bigotry, the space for any Muslim opposition — and not merely against Jews — is restricted with the threat of mob violence ever present against those who dare denounce such bigotry.

Muslim anti-Semitism represents to a large extent the "Arabization" of Islam, particularly the majority Sunni Islam, in modern times. In other words, non-Arab Muslims — they constitute four-fifths of the world's Muslim population — willingly defer in understanding and practising their faith tradition to the cultural and political prejudices of Arabs, especially to Wahhabi sectarianism of the Saudis. Mahathir's recent anti-Semitic remarks were made about the same time Geert Wilders was taken to court in Holland for his anti-Islamic views.

While Muslims demand Wilders be punished for anti-Muslim bigotry, their silence — especially those Muslims enjoying the benefits of freedom and democracy in the West — over Mahathir's anti-Semitism shows how greatly responsible they are in desecrating Islam by the filth of their own bigotry.

It is quite proper to note the rise in post-Holocaust anti-Semitism is directly related to the widespread bigotry against Jews and Israel among Muslims. It is also a measure of why the Muslim world's political culture is so terribly retarded relative to that of the non-Muslim world.

Anwar Sodomy Case - Hard to Believe

Anwar sodomy charges 'hard to believe'

By Mark Colvin

More than 50 Australian Federal MPs have signed a letter to the Malaysian Government protesting against the trial of the former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, 62, allegedly sodomised 24-year-old Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, in 2008.

He was previously convicted of sodomy in 1998 and served six years in jail. The conviction was later overturned.

The letter describes the new charges against Anwar as hard to believe for many friendly observers of Malaysia.

The man who organised the letter, Melbourne Labor MP Michael Danby, says supporters of the incumbent government are manipulating the legal system to drive Malaysia's best known leader out of national politics.

Barry Wain, a writer in residence at Singapore's Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, says the Anwar trial is widely regarded as a political trial.

"It's sufficient to say that right from the beginning. When he was accused of sodomy the second time around 18 months ago, the public opinion polls showed that almost nobody in Malaysia believed the charges," he said. "The international community does not believe the charges."

The first conviction was overturned after the inspector general of police was found guilty of assaulting Anwar.

Mr Wain says there were other factors at play as well.

"The special branch was found to have kidnapped and intimidated and tortured witnesses who were then required to testify against Anwar," he said.

"One has to understand that political mobilisation in Malaysia takes place on racial lines. Everything is on ethnic lines.

"It's a very dangerous game and it's already led to extremism, and again Anwar's trial can be seen as extreme.

"One would have hoped that Prime Minister Najib Razak might have moved to make sure that the trial didn't take place if he was trying to, as he says he is, operating under a slogan of One Malaysia and trying to bring about ethnic harmony."

Mr Wain says the problems with the Anwar charges, and with much of Malaysia, can be traced back to Dr Mahathir Mohamad's long rule as prime minister.

He says Dr Mahathir broke down the separation between the state, the government and the judiciary.

"The broad area that he did most damage was in institutions. He really cut the institutions adrift in Malaysia," Mr Wain said.

"The judiciary was independent. It was fairly conservative but it worked, and the police force was OK, and other elements in the bureaucracy worked.

"But after 50 years of the party being in power, the bureaucracy and the heads of those bureaucratic institutions have become extensions of the ruling party.

"Dr Mahathir himself definitely interfered with the judiciary. He sought to subjugate the judiciary to get the political outcome he wanted and that opened a way for monetary corruption into the judiciary."

'Financial scandals'

Mr Wain says although Dr Mahathir achieved a lot, he essentially lost Malaysia a lot of money.

"I just took four financial scandals and my estimate was that 50 billion ringgit probably in direct losses in those," he said.

"That would have been $US20 billion at the exchange rate at the time and I think you can double that with the losses that you get through opportunity costs and other things other than the direct amounts."

Mr Wain says that is known to the older generations, particularly politicians, but it was not widely publicised.

"Most of these financial scandals go back to the '80s, so half the population either wasn't born or was in primary school," he said.

"It figured in some of the elections back there in the mid '80s ... and almost defeated [Dr Mahathir].

"The main accusation [was] that Dr Mahathir had taken the ruling party into business and been involved in some of these scams, such as trying to rig the international tin price."

Lebih 50 Ahli Parlimen Australia Desak Kes Fitnah 2 Anwar Digugurkan

Posted: 13 Feb 2010 08:44 AM PST

-malaysianinsider

Sambut Hari Valentine Bererti Raikan Kejatuhan Islam Di Sepanyol

Posted: 13 Feb 2010 06:24 AM PST

Hukum Menyambut Hari Valentine

– al-Hajj : 67

Anas bin Malik r.a berkata: Nabi s.a.w pernah datang ke Madinah sedangkan penduduknya memiliki dua hari raya. – Hadis riwayat al-Nasaai, no: 959.

Sabdanya: Barangsiapa menyerupai satu kaum, maka dia termasuk golongan mereka. – Hadis riwayat Imam Abu Dawud, hadis no: 3512.

"Kita lihat masyarakat kita sambut Valentine's Day tak ubah sebagaimana orang barat menyambutanya," ujarnya.

-harakahdaily

From Bali To Manhattan ...

Posted: 13 Feb 2010 06:07 AM PST

In my last post I bitched about bad customer service and lousy food. Well today I'm going to talk about good customer service and great food instead. And before I even begin my story in more detail, if you happen to be bored this weekend and looking to play slots - click here cos they give one of the best slot bonus around. There, don't say I didn't tell you :D Now back to my story.

This evening wifey, the boys and me decided to head out for dinner. It's something we haven't really done in a while cos we're more health conscious these days and cook our own food. But today with the weather being worse than the Sahara, we didn't feel like slaving away over a hot stove and decided that we're going out to some air conditioned place for dinner.

We drove to Subang Parade, a shopping mall near our place and decided to try out Manhattan Fish Market. It's the only food outlet in Subang Parade that we haven't tried cos the boys don't really like fish. This time I was adamant in wanting to try it cos I was fed up of all the rest of the food outlets there.

There was fish and chips on the menu and that appeased the boys so at least they didn't put up such a fuss. After the Jom Bali incident I was skeptical with the service and even more skeptical with the food quality though I've heard people say it's good and all that.

The moment we sat down, we were served instantly by this cheery waiter. He patiently waited while I figured out what to order and even explained about the different kinds of fishes they had. After taking our orders, he went away and in a couple of minutes, our orders started arriving.

Now, this was certainly the opposite of what I experienced at the Jom Bali cafe. And the food was pretty tasty and quite filling. No, it was more than filling! Both wifey and me were stuffed to the max that we felt like turkeys on Thanksgiving! We shared a mix platter that was for 2 persons and when it arrived I thought it was not going to be enough.

It consisted of fish, prawns (which I'm allergic to so wifey had it all for herself), calamari, oysters (which I love and wifey cannot stomach) and garlic rice with french fries. It didn't look like it would fill us up but halfway through it we were both panting heavily like some perverts cos we were so stuffed! The thing is, the dish was yummy and we just couldn't stop eating and hence stuffed ourselves silly.

But at least we were all satisfied with the meal (the boys included) and it didn't cost much either. I thought it was pretty reasonable for a family of four and I am most definitely going back there again :D See the difference good food and great service makes. That Jom Bali place should take lessons from this people!

Oh and wifey and me were so stuffed that we could hardly walk after that ... LOL! Burrrpppppppp!

Mayat Bayi Lelaki Rentung Ditemui Di dalam Tong Sampah

Posted: 13 Feb 2010 06:35 AM PST

Timbalan Ketua Polis Daerah Kuala Krai, DSP Abdul Rahim Che Ghani, berkata berdasarkan siasatan, tong sampah itu dipercayai terbakar sejak pagi semalam.

- Bernama

Apa Punya Pemimpin, Tender Tak Lulus Menjadi Sebab Untuk Tuduh KM Pulau Pinang Diktator Dan Keluar Parti

Posted: 13 Feb 2010 04:36 AM PST

Your name Thazin is the Royal Flower

Posted: 13 Feb 2010 04:18 AM PST

Source: Taw Win Thazin-The Royal Orchid.

Myanmar Calendar is marked by the flowers that bloom each month. The new year of the Myanmar Calendar begins in Tagu, approximately April, and the flowers which characterize each month beginning with the first are:- "The Gangaw, Shwe Saga and the delicate silvery Sabai,

  •  The Mu Lay (Myatt Lay), Khatta,
  •  Golden Yinn Mar, Kyar and Khawei.
  •  When mists blanket the land, them comes
  • Thazin, Khwa Tan, Pauk and Le."
  • But of all the many flowers that bloom in our land and fill it with fragrance, the thazin is queen. It is THE royal flower, hence the name " taw win thazin".

There are about 2,000 species of thazin, this most delicate of orchids, and their distribution covers South-East Asia, America and Africa. There are over 200 sub-species and the thazin so treasured in Myanmar is the Bulbophyllum auricomum.

The thazin has enjoyed a place of honour in Myanmar since ancient times. Because it grows and flourishes on the higher branches of tall trees on mountains, in gorges and deep forest mostly uncontaminated by human habitation, it is considered a "thant sin pan", that is a flower of purity. Some call it the "nat pwes" , a royal celestial flower of purity. Some call it the "nat pwes", ceremonies and festivals held in honour of the spirit beings in the Myanmar month of "Nattaw", around December and January. The tiny flowers on the pliant stalk are also described as "pin sint pyan pan" the flowers wich fly high on treetops, and sometimes as "pan puan Bayin", the monarch of the aerial flowers.

The thazin has stirred the hearts and imagination of poets and writers throughout the ages and many a verse has been written extolling the beauty and purity of this tiny gem of a flower . But none can hope to touch the lyrical beauty of the ode to the thazin by Shwe Taik Soe U Toe in his epic poem the "Rama Rakan" (Ramayana Epic). There is also a classical song of the thazin which was composed by one U Shwe Gan which is traditionally sung during the performance of the Ramayana Drama.

In days of old when Myanmar was a kingdom ruled over by her own monarchs, the foremost blooms of thazin were always first presented to the ruling king in the royal palace. It is said that the flowers picked in the Taungoo region were carefully packed in huge baskets and escorted by Thaing bearers (bearer of a long cane wand with a silken scearf tied to it), one on each side ,

and there was also a couple of Kyaing bearers, (bearers of gold or white umbrellas), again one on either side of the precious cargo. On arrival at the city, the flowers were taken to the " Pan Khon Daw", a special flower pavilion for presentation of flowers to the king.

The choicest flowers are of course always first offered to the Lord Buddha. Then the king takes his pick follow by the queen or queens, princes, princesses and the royal countries . After the presentation of the first blooms at court others are then free to obtain the flowers to offer them up in their shrines at home or for their personal adornment. Most Myanmar women like to wear flowers in their hair and they vie with each other to be among the as it was in the yesteryears and the most coveted flower is still the thazin. There are, today, many cultivated orchids and other imported exotic flowers such as the hybrid roses, but the taw win tha – zin is still the top favourite.

In Myanmar , the regions that produce thazin are the mountains and forests of Northern and Southern Shan State, Pyin-Oo -lwin, the Taungoo and Mawlamyaing regions and the mountains of Rakhine State. But thazin can also be home grown. Previously, thazin lovers had to depend on the "thitkhwa mokehso" , orchid hunder, for the flowers is there, capital investment is low and the returns are considerable.

So what manner of flower is this thazin with sends romantic souls into raptures? It consists of a graceful flower stalk of about 25 centimeters on which bloom a series of miniature but perfectly formed flowers of white and gold. The size of the flower is just about 9 millimeters, yet it possesses all the features of an orchid-3 sepals and three petals, of which one is a labellum or a lip.

A spray of thazin is worn in a chignon at the neck or in a traditional Myanmar 'sadon', that is a cylindrical tube of hair on the top of the head for formal occasions. Several sprays falling together with the cascade of the 'sameik' or long tresses of hair falling from the side of the sadon knot is another traditional fashion. Modern girls were sprays of thazin behind the ear in their long smooth blue black hair which falls free to at least waist level. But whatever the fashion, the thazin is the flower most sought after, especially by the fairer sex and the opposite sex find it most alluring.

So, the thazin is treasured as a symbol of royalty and purity, but above all, for its simple and dainty perfaction of beauty and elegance.

The Myanmar people, irrespective of sex and age, have a great love and appreciation of flowers. Our green and land verdant land which produces flowers of all varieties and colours has natured this love. There are flowers for every season and every occasion and they have part of our very culture and traditions. The flowers of Myanmar have been part of our very culture and traditions. The flowers of Myanmar have been idealized and praised in verse, prose and song and Myanmar artists, since time immemorial, have tried to capture the beauty of our flowers in paintings, Wood carvings, stucco and stone.

The flower of April is Gangaw, the bloom with its waxy petals, which dot the leaves of the India wood tree. The golden champac (magnolia) lends its charms to May. The fragrance of the silvery jasmine, Sabai, is wafted along by the zephyrs of June, followed by the scent of the Spanish jasmine in July. The Khatta, land lily, lends its beauty in August and September is graced by the gold of the Yinn Mar, flower of a tawny hardwood tree. In October, with the festival of ponds and lakes under the sun, moon and stars and the bright yellow of Khawei adds to the clear blue skies of November. Then mists cover the land in December and is greeted by the Khwar tan, clematis, of January. Comes February with its showy clusters of red flowers of the parrot tree, and March adorned by the feathery

blooms of the le, the silk cotton tree.

Flower thus hold a special significance for us, with each playing a role in our age-old customs and traditions. For example "Thabye" , the Victory flower (leaves like the Laurel and Olive) plays a dominant part on auspicious occasions; sabai or jasmine because of its purity and fragrance is used to garland honoured guests or a young bride and groom to bless them as they embark on the great adventure of life. The gangaw has been adopted as their very own by youths of Yangon university. Then there is the padauk. This flower is the herald of the Myanmar new Year and has had romantic connotations for lovers since Natshinnaung, king of Taungoo and poet of no mean repute, expressed his love and longing to beautify the hair of his beloved Datukalya with the fragrant golden sprigs of padauk , in his love sonnets. The padauk therefore signifies tenderness and romance.

     Mysterious Jewels of the Jungle
    by Ma Thanegi

Orchids have mesmerized people for centuries and continue to work their enchantment. Like beautiful dryads of mythology, they weave spells with their beauty, and tease their owners with their moods and whims. They bloom if they will, depending on weather, atmosphere and probably sheer willfulness. They flop over and die if they so wish. To grow them is like looking after a bevy of beautiful prima donnas.

The name orchid comes from the Latin orchis, while the Bama name Thit Khwa simply means "Fork of a tree"… where they are most likely to be found. The most loved orchid of Myanmar however is not known by this name: it is Thazin, (Bulbophyllum auricomum) which blooms with tiny white flowers in graceful sprays that grow out of a small, bright-green, pear shaped bulb. Moreover, they are headily fragrant.

Once they used to be so rare that on pain of death no commoner however wealthy was allowed to wear it in the hair. It was only meant for queens and princesses and special envoys had to go deep into the jungles to bring back some with due pomp and ceremony. The best comes from the Rakhine Yoma mountain ranges. Now people grow it easily with bulbs collected from the jungles but even then it is an expensive flower that brides drape around their high chignons. With many exotic orchids available, the fragile purityof Thazin and its light perfume suits the bride as no other flower can.

    Scientific Name: Bulbophyllum auricomum
Myanmar Name: Tha Zin (Royal Flower)
Native Country : Myanmar , Thailand, Sumatra, Java
Sweet Scented flower and blossom in winter (November -January).

Common Name The Golden Haired Bulbophyllum – In Burma Ta-zeen-ban

    Flower Size 1/5″ [5 mm]

Found in Thailand, Burma, Sumatra and Java in lowland seasonal forests as a miniature to small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with 3.8 to 3/4″ spaced, ovoid-oblong pseudobulbs carrying 2 to 3, apical, deciduous, rather thin leaves that are often not present at blooming which is on an arching, basal, to 8 3/4″ [22 cm] long, racemose, many [25] flowered inflorescence occuring in the late fall and early winter and has fragrant flowers

GONG XI FA CAI FROM PETPOSITIVE: Tips On What You Can Do For Your Dog During CNY

    Posted: 13 Feb 2010 04:17 AM PST

Thank you all for your support over weeks and months to the Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association - better known to many as PETPOSITIVE.

We cherish the support you have given us. Whether you are big organisations like the Welfare Department, CIMB Foundation, Citibank Malaysia, MidValley Megamall, Cititel & Boulevard Hotels, IKEA, others or individual funders.

WE LOVE YOU ALL. We look for your continued support to our cause of bringing animal-assisted therapy to disabled and elderly Malaysians throughout the nation.

Our services to our clients are made free-of-charge through YOUR SUPPORT.

As you head back home to your loved ones, we would like to remind you to think of your beloved pets.

Here are some guidelines which we hope will be helpful to you during this most auspicious occasion:

    1. Wherever possible, take your pet with you.
    2. If you can't take your pet with you, board your furkid in a trusted veterinary clinic or breeder.
    3. If you have asked a friend to feed your pet whilst you are away, try to get him or her to live in your house during your absence. This will ensure that your pet is more settled without you around.  Your pet will also less likely become a nuisance to your neighbours by barking out of loneliness.
    4. Make it a point to ring back regularly to the boarding home, vet or your friends entrusted to look after your dogs to make sure that everything is going on well with your pet. Quite a few owners have suffered badly when they came back to find pets dead even in veterinary clinics.
    5. Make a special effort to keep your dogs inside the house at night or chained during fireworks displays. Many canines are terrified by the sound and often run away and get lost during festive holidays.
    6. Avoid adopting a pet during the holidays. Even homeless pets from shelters. Owning a pet is a heavy and lifetime responsibility. Such decisions should never be made at the spur of the moment.
    7. Finally, if all these suggestions sound too much trouble in owning a pet, think twice again next time about owning a pet if you are thinking about owning a new one.

    Salam Reformasi!

How to upload .WMV files to YouTube? Upload problems? Try without the progress bar

    Posted: 13 Feb 2010 12:31 AM PST

I tried to upload a .WMV file but it returned an error. After three tries, I renamed the file from funvideo05.WMV to upload.WMV. The upload still failed.

Then, I googled 'upload wmv youtube' but none could give me the solution.

Then I went back to my 'Video File Upload' page and decided to read

I read until the last line - 'Upload problems? Try without the progress bar'. (See screenshot below)

So, yes. I clicked on the link and it brought me to the 'Video File Upload' that does not have the progress bar while the video is being uploaded.

    The upload was successful! YAY!

QONG XI FAT CHAI, one and all. Happy Chinese New Year of the Tiger. It is going to be a prosperous year. And am sure, these few days, when I go visit my Chinese friends, and even those who join in the festivity (like me, using this CNY as a reason to have a get together with friends all of whom are Kadazandusuns... hey, we are 1Malaysia eeehhhhh), inevitably political talks will be in the abundance. This BBC piece could very well be but one of the insights of our policitical situation in this great country of ours. For you to decide. Happy CNY....

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — Malay, Chinese and Indian Malaysians, thrown together by a colourful past, have often managed a mutual accommodation of each other's different faiths and cultures.

But the recent argument over the use of the word "Allah" has provoked strident — and divergent — views both within the Muslim community and outside it.

So too has the labelling of Indian and Chinese Malaysians as "pendatang", or immigrants, by a senior ruling party member, Datuk Nasir Safar.

He lost his job as adviser to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak 12 hours later.

Meanwhile, the cancellation of a concert by US singer Beyonce, the arrest of young unmarried couples for "close proximity" and the caning sentence given to a mother for drinking beer have all attracted international attention.

Such rows call into question whether Malaysia is a state in which different races and faiths live in equality and comfort with each other, or whether the country is becoming more conservatively Muslim at the expense of others.

    Change of direction

The results of Election 2008 ramped up the tension.

The ruling coalition still won, but with a much reduced majority in the worst result in 50 years.

Norani Othman, a professor at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (Ikmas) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, says that after independence, there was a national emphasis on consensus-building and equality.

That was adapted, after race riots in 1969, to more overtly pro-Malay policies.

As Muslim nations around the world struggled to modernise, yet not lose touch with their traditional roots, the influence of Islamist parties expanded.

In Malaysia, that pitted the ruling United National Malays Organisation (Umno) against the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) with the result that the 1980s saw a deliberate process of Islamisation.

What were once affirmative action policies geared to help Malays "catch up" with other Malaysians became policies enshrining Malay primacy or ascendancy, and being Malay meant being Muslim.

Institutions deemed to conform with Islamic principles and values were created — Islamic banks, Islamic insurance, Islamic university — there was even talk of "Islamising knowledge".

The list of matters judged to be under the jurisdiction of Islamic laws has expanded over the decades.

Just as the so-called race riots of 1969 were in fact a sign of systemic breakdown, as Australian academic Clive Kessler argues, so do the current tensions pose a direct challenge to Malaysia's founding aspirations of a diverse and democratic nation, argues Noraini.

The trend, she says, is clear: "It is one of a steady increase in religious authoritarianism and intolerance, emanating from many key sectors and influential levels of Malaysian Muslim society."

National citizenship training has sparked recent controversy, with some critics saying it was contributing to an apparently unstoppable rise of race and faith-based exclusivity.

Participants report they are told that the only thing left for the Malay community is power, because they are a majority, and that any loss of power could mean they become something like an American Indian in their own country, one source said.

Shoring up that power involves "the projecting of the Other, the non-Malay, as always conspiring or wanting to take over", she said.

That siege mentality is expressed in the claim that non-Muslims using the word Allah might convert Muslims — even when figures suggest that Islam is the fastest growing faith in the country.

A new group called Perkasa — meaning strengthen — is avowedly pro-Malay. Critics call it chauvinistic.

Its founder, Datuk Ibrahim Ali, says: "If the Malays are not happy, then it will become a problem."

Rising stars such as Datuk Idris Haron, MP for Melaka and a member of Umno's Supreme Council, has supported party colleagues who describe non-Malays as "immigrants".

"Yes the fundamental structure of the country is race-based," says Idris.

"It is the Malaysian way of life that a Malay must be a Muslim," he says — and that Malays are rightfully "the top priority when it comes to political development".

Idris argues that the Chinese and Indians in Malaysia live far better than they would in other countries, thanks to Malay tolerance and generosity.

    1 Malaysia?

But the determination of one's rights according to one's race and religion profoundly worries not only Malaysia's many more liberal minds — it bothers the strategists behind the ruling coalition too.

They know that loyal non-Malays no longer see them as representative of a pluralist centre of Malaysian life.

"We don't have an effective channel of communication between the communities," says Chandra Muzaffar, chairman of the independent 1 Malaysia Foundation..

The elections in March 2008 also showed many Malays deserted Umno, their traditional source of protection and wealth. Hence Najib's creation of the 1 Malaysia idea.

"1 Malaysia, very simply put, is to promote unity in diversity — with the emphasis not just on tolerance but mutual respect", the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, told the BBC.

"We recognise the polarity and we are engaging it," he said.

Many Malaysians want clear progress from a determined leadership, says Chandra.

They say a new multi-faith, multi-racial body is needed not just to talk about but implement solutions to sources of division.

"We need very concrete solutions, about handling the deceased (of different faiths within one family), the conversion of minors, custody of children, the use of Allah, circulation of literature for Christians in Bahasa Malaysia. I personally think the obstacles placed in the way are bureaucratic obstacles.

"We have to resolve it. At the moment we don't have an effective channel of communication between the communities," he said.

A clue to the problem is visible at the seat of federal government, the created city of Putrajaya.

    It has two huge mosques.

Ten years after the city was built, permission has been granted to one Christian and one Buddhist group to build their own houses of worship. — BBC

Abdullah Karim Dan Hanipa Pertikai Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Disiplin PAS

    Posted: 12 Feb 2010 10:50 PM PST

InsyaAllah, ianya bakal terbongkar nanti.

    Hanipa Sertai Pasukan Peguambela Anwar

    Posted: 12 Feb 2010 10:36 PM PST
