"NO DOGS APPEARED AS IF THEY WERE STARVING to death to me when I visited the pound," declared Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (MPS) councillor Gunarajah George.

He said this to PET+BLOGSPOT yesterday after making a special trip to investigate claims of abuse at the dog shelter in Rawang which is used by the local council to house strays caught by them.

be careful when using ATM

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 09:04 AM PST

… and don't be greedy to want to pick up money on the floor, thinking the money is yours, when someone pointed out some dropped money to you.

apparently this scam i read about in the sun happened in penang too.  the thieves would work in group of 2 or 3.  first they'll pretend to scatter some RM1 or RM10 notes around the ATM. then someone will tap you on your shoulder while you are making transactions at the ATM, informing you that you have dropped the notes. unsuspecting, and thinking those notes were really yours that you dropped, you turned to pick up those notes… and whoosh!!… in an instance your ATM card will be stolen.  read more about it in the sun.

sometimes i would go to maybank in bishop street to use the ATM. the first time i was there, i grumbled to myself, why is the place  so small and  narrow.  the space is only wide enough for one person to stand, and only about 2 persons behind you in queue  to wait inside.  that is if the other machines don't have people! if the other machines have people, only 1 – the one doing the transaction can be there.  i don't like it being small, narrow and cramped. well now that i read about this scam which require 2 or 3 of the thieves, i'm glad that the ATM cubicle in maybank bishop street is narrow!

oops! i have revealed which ATM i went so will someone stalk me now? well if anyone do, they'll regret because my bank has no money… i mean little money… yes, less than RM5,000. nobody will be interested in a poor me.

"Tuan Doktor," panggilnya sambil marah-marah, "Saya tak tau pil

PR Akhirnya Bersetuju Tubuhkan Jawatankuasa Petroleum

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 07:39 AM PST

Money brother to democracy. Money is important in politics. In politics, everything is money! - Malaysiakini interview with Shahrir Samad

EXCLUSIVE Umno has recognised its weaknesses and will be more careful in the selection of its candidates. [VIDEO INSIDE]

On amendments to Umno's constitution in combating money politics, Shahrir said he was realistic enough to understand and accept that money was the brother to democracy because capitalism was the economic system that was part of democracy.

When Malaysiakini asked, 'So you are saying that money politics is inevitable?", Shahrir answered, "
You have to accept money and its role in politics. This is because we have come to a stage in Malaysian politics that you have to be reasonably wealthy to be in politics. When I started working with leaders like Tun Hussein Onn, Tun Razak and served even Tun Ismail, it was impressed upon me as a young man that politics is service and you serve the rakyat. But now in a democratic situation, money is important in politics."

Siri Bercakap Dengan Miki – Biar hantap jangan hansap

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 06:44 AM PST

On our way out to dinner just now, Miki hopped into the car with his Daddy and I stayed outside while Azman drive the car out into the drive way. Then I would close the gate (yes we don't have auto-gate) before joining them in the car.

I saw Miki waving at me while the car was in reverse and apparently my pint size lil kiddo said "Bye bye Mummy! Tinggal Mummy! Padan muka Mummy tu… Ngada-ngada Mummy tu kan??"

He even got the nerve to ask his Daddy if I was mengada-ngada aka pretentiously annoying aka over-acting? I am a drama queen, Miki! What do you expect from your own Mom? Tampar kang?

As I was carrying him when we walked to the restaurant, he said "Mummy ni hantap!".
In Perak, it is inappropriate to say that a baby or small child that we are carrying is heavy or berat but instead we use the term hantap.  But it was me carrying him, how can he say I am hantap?? Eiii.. ko nak kata Mummy gemukkk ehh Miki??? Nak kena? Nak kena?

Back home we cuddled on the couch while reading his new story book, about a frog that has forgotten how to swim. I read with full enthusiasm "Little Froggy was sobbing, big drops of tears was falling down from his eyes and….."

A small voice eagerly completed the sentence "….frog tu nangis Mummy! Frog tu ngada-ngada sangat!!"

*Pengsan*

Dia guna perkataan tu lagiiii… Siapa ajar ni???

Lesson of the day – Biar hantap jangan mengada-ngada!

10 sen increase for RON95! BN is living up to its acronym! BARANG NAIK! RAKYAT MENDERITA

Petrol price expected to increase by 10sen
Kong See Hoh

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 21, 2010) : The government is expected to announce a price increase of 10sen a litre for RON95 petrol and diesel when the new fuel price mechanism is revealed in mid-March, Sin Chew Daily reported today.

The price of RON97 will also be increased but there is no decision yet on the quantum.
RON95 is currently retailed at RM1.80 a litre, RON97 and diesel at RM2.05 and RM1.70 a litre respectively.

Finance Ministry sources said the government has decided to raise fuel prices as it cannot provide more subsidy needed to maintain fuel prices at current levels following a spike in global crude oil prices.

The government believes an increase of 10sen a litre is acceptable to the public.

The sources also told the daily the government has yet to come up with a fuel price mechanism that is acceptable to all quarters, and as a result it may put off or may even be forced to abandon some new measures that are already in the pipeline.

"Plans were afoot for the registration of vehicle owners and their MyKad through Maybank and petrol kiosks to begin in April under the proposed 'one vehicle owner, one subsidy' fuel subsidy mechanism. It looks like the plan may not take off."

The sources said the cap on selling 20 litres of petrol to foreign cars near Malaysian borders will continue to be implemented.

Meanwhile, Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia president Datuk Hashim Othman believes that foreign car owners will pay the market price when the new fuel price mechanism is introduced next month.

He said the government's main intention is to provide subsidy to those who qualify for it, to protect the interest of the lower and middle-income groups as well as save on expenditures.

Good news, bad news…

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 06:03 AM PST

I was shopping for some personal things this afternoon when I suddenly saw a familiar face that I didn't expect at all to see, of all places, at a hypermarket in Ipoh. Without mistake, the person I saw was definitely Anita. Anita? Hmmm… what was she doing in Ipoh? And at a hypermarket?

I knew very likely she wasn't there alone, so I looked around her. Yep, saw Kak Ana! And there was a little toddler in a pram – who else could it be other than… my little Cek Mek!! Woohoo!!

I went over to them. Kak Ana had brought Anita to the hospital earlier to see SN and since they ran out of diapers for the little ones, Kak Ana decided to go to the hypermarket to shop for the needs of the infants at her shelter home.

Cek Mek is no longer as chubby as she used to be. Oh well, the last I saw her, all she did was eat, sleep, eat, sleep. Now? Well, she's almost 10 months old (wah, so fast??!) and dah buas, so yeah, that explains why she's no longer chubby! But she has not lost that old selamba aka muka sadin looks… just like her Opah Pi… heheheh…

The little girl still has to go for follow ups at the hospital and get her blood tested, but alhamdulillah, so far so good.

On another note, I got a call tonight from Sofie's number. At first I thought it was Sofie herself. But it turned out to be Sofie's sister. Sofie was the one who asked her to call me to inform me that she was unwell and that they were waiting for a neighbour's car to help bring Sofie to the hospital. According to the sister, Sofie was too weak to get up.

Hmmm… I'm wondering if her condition is back to square one… like when I first met her? Looks like I have to rearrange my plans for this week – instead of visiting Lin first, I'd probably better visit Sofie first.

I sure hope it's nothing serious though…

PR Tubuh Jawatankuasa Displin, Memantap Gagasan

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 05:44 AM PST

-TVS

Tindakan Khalid Samad Tidak Rayu Adalah Wajar

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 05:14 AM PST

Ramailah juak-juak UG bangkit menempelak GB lantarannya.

-malaysiakini

Tidak dinyatakan kenapa paling layak.

Dan Tuan Ibrahim memasukkan pula Ustaz Abdul Baqi Othman (bekas PJ Pahang) sebagai salah seorang ahli jawatankuasanya. Nama Abdul Mutalib Embong sepastinya juga cadangan dari Mustafa Ali. Bagitu kaedah mereka melantik Jawatan Disiplin PAS. Secara gitu-gitu. Perlantikan secara kedai kopi. Tiada mekanisma khusus.

Learning an instrument enhances the brain's sensitivity to all sounds, including speech, say researchers

Parents may not appreciate the screeching of violins and recorders during the hours of practice, but new evidence suggests music lessons help children improve their language skills. Scientists have discovered that playing an instrument significantly enhances the brain's sensitivity to speech.

Schools which fail to make music a core subject are making a mistake, because it has advantages for the growing brain and would help all children, including those with dyslexia and autism, neuroscientist Professor Nina Kraus said yesterday.

"Playing an instrument may help youngsters better process speech in noisy classrooms and more accurately interpret the nuances of language that are conveyed by subtle changes in the human voice," she told the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Diego, California.

"Cash-strapped school districts are making a mistake when they cut music from the curriculum," she warned.

Professor Kraus's team at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, have shown that the nervous system responds to the acoustic properties of speech and music with sub-millisecond precision. The effectiveness with which the nervous system interprets sound patterns is linked to musical ability.

"Playing music engages the ability to extract relevant patterns, such as the sound of one's own instrument, harmonies and rhythms, from the 'soundscape'," said Professor Kraus. "Not surprisingly, musicians' nervous systems are more effective at using the patterns in music and speech alike."

Professor Kraus's team had previously discovered sensitivity to sound patterns correlated with reading skill and the ability to hear speech against background noise.

The research also suggests that playing an instrument affects automatic processing in the brainstem, the lower part of the brain, which controls breathing, the heartbeat and responses to complex sounds. She said they had discovered music can "fundamentally shape" brains in ways that may enhance everyday tasks, including reading and listening.

Emma Hutchinson, the founder and director of The Music House for Children, a not-for-profit music teaching school in London, agreed music benefited children's academic development. Babies as young as three months could respond to different frequencies in music and develop communication skills, she said.

A National Autistic Society spokeswoman said many children with autism respond well to music: "It seems that music can help children to communicate and interact with those around them, relax or to express emotions."

My Chinese New Year (Part 3)

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 04:52 AM PST

Yesterday, I wrote about the Yee Sang ceremony as a way to celebrate people or human day known as Cho Chat or the 7th day of the Chinese New Year (CNY).

However, it was a pity that I only managed to show you a sample picture of Yee Sang and a couple of pictures showing a typical Chinese family sitting around their Yee Sang.

Today, I managed to lay my hands on a couple of pictures of people (not necessarily Chinese) tossing the Yee Sang for the benefit of my non-Chinese visitors. However, it is just a co-incidence that both pictures comprise politicians from different political parties. It is not my intention to publicise them.

Meanwhile, today I also learnt a bit more about Cho Chat or People's Day. According to Chinese belief, the hen or chicken was created on the First Day, followed by the Dog, the Sheep, the Pig, the Cow and the Horse on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Day respectively. Then, of course Man on the 7th Day.

Looks like ancient Chinese also have their own version of the Bible's Genesis or 1st Chapter; except that God rested on the 7th day after creation.

Once again, Happy CNY, Happy Birthday everbody and I welcome any comments, corrections, additions, even criticisms, of what I have written about CNY for the past couple of days. I studied Chinese only up to Primary Six level and I stand to be corrected.

Ramalan GB Tepat Lagi - Petronas Methanol Labuan Pula Meletup

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 03:38 AM PST
