Salt Lake City 2

Salt Lake City 2

Salt Lake City 2

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 08:03 AM PST

One of the things that I like about most American cities is the grid or block system of the city design. The grid system allows for better organisation of the buidlings, road names, transportation services. It is also easier to find your way to a certain destination in the city.
Salt Lake City is organised in such a way that most streets in the downtown area is refered as South, West, East, North.

Let me give you an example:
I stayed at a hotel which is at the corner of South 200 West Street. To go to the Salt Palace Convention center, when I asked the reception for direction, besides giving me a map, he said, "You go 4 blocks down (he pointing the way for me) and then 2 blocks on to your right."
I walked 4 blocks and then turned right and walked 2 blocks and there I was standing in front of the Salt Place Convention center.
The same thing when you drive from the hotel, but of course you got to be aware of the one way streets.

Now you tell me how you'd show me the way to Berjaya Time Square from the Pavillion. (Not that you cannot, but what would you say to me?)

Why has police not lodged report against racist Rizal who warned that a repeat of the racial clash in Kampung Rawa might erupt?

Update Chamber of commerce at odds with national body over Lim meeting

Written by Regina William

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMPP) has accused the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (MCCM) of seeking "cheap publicity" and playing politics by meeting Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng behind its back.

DPMPP President Rizal Faris Mohideen expressed his regret and disappointment that his national leadership met up with Lim yesterday night for a dialogue on the ongoing flare-up between the DPMPP and Lim's administration.

At a press conference, Rizal said he has written a strongly worded letter to the headquarters and to the president and distanced himself from national secretary-general Datuk Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar who, along with national deputy president Datuk Muhammad Muhiyuddin Abdullah, met Lim.

The MCCM delegation that met with Lim was headed by Muhammad Muhiyuddin. Also present at the meeting were Malacca Malay Chamber chairman Datuk Md Ramly Mohamad, and Terengganu Malay Chamber deputy president A Razak Yaakup. Abdul Rahim was there in two capacities; as MCCM secretary-general and acting-president of the Pahang Malay Chamber.

"I did not mince my words against their action to meet Lim to try to 'resolve' the issue. Abdul Rahim has never called on nor stepped foot in Penang to check out what is actually happening here or the situation of the Malays in Penang. I am convinced he is seeking cheap publicity for himself and playing politics. This is neither the time nor place to do that," Rizal added.

Rizal, who called Lim a liar, dictator, political reject and hypocrite among other names, vowed to fight Lim to the end for discriminating against Malays.

"The demonstration last Friday was just a small step and we will mobilise other NGOs at the national level to end his tyranny and violence against Malays in Penang. We won't let them come into our homes and molest our wives and children and we will fight back. If we do not nip this parasite in the bud, he will worsen.

"I will fight this liar who is hiding behind a skirt. He is not good for Penang and should relinquish his position to a Penangite who would do a better job than him," a visibly upset Rizal said.

Maintaining that he was not being racist, Rizal said he was fighting for all races in Penang and warned that a repeat of the racial clash in Kampung Rawa more than a decade ago might erupt if people were unhappy.

"We do not want another Kampung Rawa incident in Penang and I fear for my Chinese and Indian friends if that were to happen. Two years after taking over and despite repeated calls from us, he has turned a deaf ear to the plight of Malays in the state.

"Where is his action plan? How can you carry out enforcement without coming up with any plan to resolve the issue?" he added.

He accused Lim of not providing accurate data and provided statistics on hawker and market stalls on the island, most of which were dominated by Chinese.

Rizal said according to statistics up to Sept 30, 2009 from the Penang Island Municipal Council, of 55 hawker centres on the island, 78% of stallholders were Chinese hawkers, 18% Malays and 4% Indians.

At the markets on the island, 76% of stallholders were Chinese, 18% Malays and 6% Indians.

While he did not dispute the figures given by Lim, Rizal said Lim did not fully disclose all the statistics including the confiscation of goods from hawkers without licences.

In 2008, goods were confiscated from 132 Malays, 110 Chinese and 17 Indians while in 2009, action was taken against 152 Malays, 84 Chinese and 17 Indians.

Rizal said while illegal Chinese hawkers who caused massive traffic congestion in several areas were let off, Malay traders at the Penang Bazaar and Batu Ferringhi were targeted.

The Vice Guide to Liberia

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 06:26 AM PST

This clip of 55 minutes is not for the squemish. Some of you might faint! VBS travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.

America's one and only foray into African colonialism is keeping a very uneasy peace indeed. In Part 1, Vice's own Shane Smith provides a brief history lesson and some essential context for understanding what caused Liberia's civil war and how things got so bad. Liberia was originally planned and founded as a homeland for former slaves back in 1821. But fast forward a bunch of years and a military coup and you find the First Liberian Civil War in 1989: yet another third-world regime change in which the US-backed opposition, led by Charles Taylor, overthrows a government unfriendly to US interests. Once in power, Taylor's corrupt, dysfunctional government quickly finds itself under attack by local warlords, leading to the Second Liberian Civil War ten years later. From there things go from bad to total shit. VBS TV Go directly to this site for the 55 minutes video clip, needs high speed broadband.

Debat Royalti : Nazri Dan Mustapha Rupanya Pengecut

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 07:10 AM PST

Breast cancer examinations: delay is not an option

By She Speaks

In this day and age where the dissemination of information hits you hard and fast, it is a sad point to note that despite the messages of awareness, women do sometimes put off making that simple yet potentially life-saving date with a mammogram.

The key to survival is in your hands

This fact hit home recently after the news that reality contestant Jennifer Lyon who starred in Survivor: Palau lost her fight with the disease.

What was tragic about the news was that the 37-year-old delayed seeking help. In an interview with People Jennifer admitted she had felt something in her right breast that didn't feel normal. However Jennifer reportedly brushed it off.

"I thought it was probably scar tissue related to my breast implants. It was right along the ridge of the implant, so I let it go, and I let it go for a long time," Jennifer was quoted in People as saying.

The thing is, in hindsight Jennifer made the wrong choice. She should have stepped up. It seems so obvious to us but then again, if we were in her situation how many of us would have done the right thing?

I know I probably would have buried my head in the sand. Made an excuse and comforted myself that ignorance is bliss. It is what I have always done – assumed that it won't happen to me.

Jennifer's story has forced me to revaluate my fragile grip on immortality. There is no fountain of eternal youth, and if I cling to ever finding that, it is merely wishful thinking. And, let's be honest, plain ol' stupidity.

My life is literally in my hands with every self-breast exam I do. All the data on breast cancer survival is in early detection. Breast cancer is NOT a silent killer.

There are signs to look out for. We just can't choose to ignore them because we are too afraid of facing the truth and confronting our immortality.

If during a routine self-exam you find something odd – get it checked. In this case, there is no shame in being a hypochondriac. It is better to be sure than sorry.

Celebrate Conformity

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 05:20 AM PST

In The Australian, Janet Albrechtsen has a fine column on Western democracies' accelerating retreat from core liberties. She touches on the Wilders trial in the Netherlands and your humble correspondent's recent travails up north, in both of which cases the state is happy to sacrifice freedom of expression in the cause of hedging the sensitivities of Islam with special protections. But what struck me most about Janet's piece was her local angle. I've been musing for years on how the illusions of multicultural tolerance have been hijacked by the avowedly unicultural and intolerant, but you could hardly have a more parodic example than Omar Hassan.

Mr. Hassan wrote to Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Commission to complain about Michael Smith's radio show. Mr. Smith had been discussing whether the burka should be prohibited in certain places because criminals have used it as a disguise with which to commit crimes. Which happens to be true. But, as in Canada and the Netherlands, the truth is no defense. So Mr. Hassan complained to the Anti-Discrimination Commission about Mr. Smith's Islamophobia," and the ADC accepted the complaint. What's interesting is that Omar Hassan's complaint is 15 pages long, and discourses on many topics. For example:

He expressed his disgust at being "forced to look at the backside of a woman who bends over in front of me in supermarket to pick an item off a bottom shelf". It is a health hazard, he says. "Non-Muslim women do not use water to clean themselves when they go to the toilet." Thus, bending over in a supermarket could cause serious health risks.

So, in the course of complaining about Mr. Smith's "bigotry," Omar Hassan reveals himself to be a bigot: He's explicitly bigoted against infidel women. But, needless to say, the Anti-Discrimination Commission accepted the bigot's case and, at great cost to Queensland taxpayers, will now be making Mr. Smith's life hell for the foreseeable future.

Why don't the Anti-Discrimination Commission go after the bigot Hassan? After all, he very conveniently confessed his bigotry in a letter mailed directly to them.

Ah, but it doesn't work like that. The bigot Hassan belongs to a protected identity group, so Mr. Smith's free speech must be curtailed while Hassan can continue sating his peculiar obsession with non-Muslim female bottoms with impunity — for it would be "intolerant" to subject an avowedly intolerant Islamic supremacist to "Islamophobia."

After two years of this battle up north, my only advice to Mr. Smith is this: Don't let them make what you said the issue. Make the third-rate hack enforcers of the Commission and their ugly inconsistent racket the issue. Every day, around the free world, liberty dims in the interests of appeasing thuggish ignoramuses like Omar Hassan. What kind of deal is that? Mark Steyn in the National Review

Pembaziran Yang Tiada Tara : Kapal Selam Scorpene Rosak & Tidak Dibenarkan Menyelam

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 05:17 AM PST

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 03:15 AM PST

I've just found out that I'm going to be rich. All I need to do is just be a stupid idiot and fall for this scam ... urmmm, I mean proposal. How hard can that be right? Being stupid comes naturally to me ... LOL!

Sometimes I'm amazed at how bold some people can be about trying to hoodwink people. I know I've posted about something like this before but I cannot help posting about it again. It did give me a good laugh to begin with.

Here, let me share my laughter with you guys. And don't worry, when I collect my $15.5 million U.S.A. Dollars (Hey, I'm only copying how it was written below), I'll buy and island and invite all you over for a free one year holiday.

But ... urrrmmmmm ... first you all have to email me your bank account numbers and deposit a $2000 U.S.A Dollars for processing fee that will be returned when you arrive on my island ... really, I won't cheat you, you're all my friends ... hahaha!

Date: 9/2/2010 1:25:33 PM

Attention Please,

("REMITTANCE OF $15.5 MILLION U.S.A DOLLARS (see, I told you that was how it was written)

Compliment (compliment???) of the Season,

I got your mail address through the international network business media directorates (whoa, I must be pretty important cos I'm listed in the international business media directorates ... LOL!) when I was looking for a sure contact of someone who can assist me conclude up this transaction.

When i was searching for a foreign partner I assured of your capability (I assured of your capability ... ??? Damn good grammar man!) and reliability to champion this business opportunity when I prayed to the most high (wow, someone prayed to the most high for me ... hahaha!) about you. In my department we discovered an abandoned sum of $15.5million U.S.A dollars ( Fifteen Million Five Hundred United State Dollars).

In an account that belongs to one of our foreign customer who died along with his entire family (OMG! Poor souls!) in air crashed into the plan crash as it approached in bad weather early He died on the Monday 31st July 2000 at 13:22 GMT 14:22 UK in German Concorde victims Plane Crash with his family in a plane crash. (I wonder if there really was an air crash on 31st July 2000?)

Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless somebody applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidelines, but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin relation died alongside with (OMG! You mean they all died in the plane crash? What crappy luck!) him at the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim.

It is therefore upon this discovery that I and one official in my department now decided to make this business proposal to you and release the money to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and we don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill. (See, I told you guys I was going to be filthy rich ... LOL!)

The Banking law and guideline here stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed, the money will be transferred into the Bank treasury as unclaimed fund. The request of foreigner as next of kin in this business is occasioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner, and a Burkinabe cannot stand as next of kin to a foreigner.

We agree that 30 % of this money (only 30%? Are you kidding me?) will be for you as foreign partner, in respect to the provision of a foreign account, 10 % will be set aside for expenses incurred during the process of the transaction and 60 % would be for me and my woman colleague. There after I and my colleague will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentages indicated.

Therefore to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you as arranged, you must apply first to the bank as relations or next of kin of the deceased indicating your bank name, your bank account number, your private telephone and fax number for easy and effective communication and location where the money will be remitted. (Oh boy, I gotta hurry along and do this!)

Upon receipt of your reply, I will send to you by email the text of the application I will not fail to bring to your notice that this transaction is hitch free and that you should not entertain any atom of fear (any atom of fear, such big words!) as all required arrangements have been made for the transfer.

Reply me immediately. (reply me immediately ... hahaha!)

Yours faithfully,

POST SCRITUM: (Post Scritum? Aiyaaa, no spell checker ah?)
NOTE You have to keep everything secret as to enable the transfer to move very smoothly in to the account you will provide to the bank. (Oh man, you guys pretend you never read this, ok?) As you finished reading this letter call me immediately so that we will discuss very well over this business. (ok folks, I gotta go and call Me Mohammed Khali now, so if you'll excuse me ....) Please call me and inform me that you received my mail, because i don't go to net always.

There you have it. Now you all know I'm going to be a filthy rich millionaire soon ... LOL! I knew my ship would come in soon. I wonder if there are really any gullible souls out there that would fall for this. I suppose there are cos these people still keep on sending these emails in the hope that some poor fool will reply.

I wonder what I should spend on first with my millions? An iPhone? A Ferrari? My own private jet? So much money and don't know what to spend it on ... hahaha ... Well, it did give me a good laugh anyway ... and urrmmm, don't forget to email me your banking details and deposit that $2000.00 U.S.A dollars now, you hear?

Human Rights Commission Of Malaysia,

Menara Tun Razak,

Jalan Raja Laut,

50350 Kuala Lumpur.

Complaint on the infringement by Police

of the Human Rights of Cik Norizan Bt Salleh

The Facts

1)         On 30.10.2009, 29 year old Norizan bt Salleh was shot 5 times by police.

2)         Norizan was travelling in a car when the incident happened.  Without justification, police shot at the car from behind, the bullets penetrating through the body of the car and hitting Norizan who was seated at the back seat.

3)         After being shot, Norizan was then kicked and stepped on by the police personnel despite bleeding profusely from being shot.

4)         No person in the car was armed with any firearm and there was no threat of any kind to the police.  Despite this, police chose to open fire repeatedly at the car.

5)         Norizan is an innocent woman who has never been charged in court for any crime.  She has suffered serious injuries including permanent damage to her hand.  A bullet lodged close to her heart had to be removed by surgery at Institute Jantung Negara.  Miraculously, Norizan has survived to tell the public what happened to her.

6)         Norizan lodged a police report on 16.11.2009 complaining of attempted murder by police, but no action has been taken by the authorities against any police officer involved in her wrongful shooting and beating.

7)         One of the other occupants of the car has told lawyers of how he was tortured by police in an attempt to get him to confess that the occupants of the car were involved in robbery. He alleges that police  hung him upside down and chilli powder was rubbed on his body.

The complaint

1)         Neither Norizan, nor any of the other occupants of the car, were armed with any weapon capable of posing any threat to the life or safety of the police personnel pursuing them.

2]         The discharge of firearms by the police at the car, was intended to kill or seriously injure the occupants therein and not to stop the vehicle and apprehend the occupants.

3]         The use of excessive force and shooting to kill by police in this case, is consistent with many other cases documented by activists. In almost every case, the police version of the events has been similar; that the victims opened fire and police returned fire, killing all of them.  It has been easy for police to get away with this version, as the victims are usually dead and the truth buried.  This has also been the police version in two recent shooting cases. [Kulim shooting (February 2009) and Klang shooting (November 2009)].

(i)           call upon Suhakam to institute an urgent public Inquiry into the shooting and beating of Norizan Salleh;

(ii)          to advise the Government to take immediate steps to institute wide- ranging reforms in the police force and to implement fully the recommendations made by the Royal Police Commission.

Apabila Muhyiddin Sendiri Dedahkan Sifat Hipokritnya

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 01:16 AM PST

"Usahlah kenakan apa-apa syarat.

Kita nak beritahu semua, mu (kamu) nak lalu sini, mu kena pangkah BN.

The Quran encourages Muslims to promote religious freedom and counter religious bigotry

Posted: 11 Feb 2010 12:34 AM PST

Source: By Salam Al-Marayati, Executive Director Muslim Public Affairs Council

Hate Speech Can Be Countered with Truth, Leadership

Salam Al-Marayati says the Quran encourages Muslims to promote religious freedom and counter religious bigotry.

Close-up of Salam Al-Marayati (Courtesy Muslim Public Affairs Council) asked five experts including Salam Al-Marayati: Is it possible to protect religious freedom without limiting free speech?

The Quran encourages Muslims to promote religious freedom and counter religious bigotry. However, it also upholds the importance of the freedom to express one's own thoughts, even when they may be seen as distasteful or disrespectful by others. The Quran documents the countless attempts to defame the Prophet as a "madman," "magician" and as one who spreads discord. The Quran also chronicles accusations that it is not part of the divine messages and actually challenges its accusers with producing verses that are better in style and substance.

The Prophet tolerated defamation against himself, and the Quran responded to defamation with a challenge. In neither case was free speech curtailed.

Countering religious persecution in Islam is a mandate, according to the Quran: "And how could you refuse to fight in the cause of God and of the utterly helpless men and women and children who are crying, "O our Sustainer! Lead us forth [to freedom] out of this land whose people are oppressors, and raise for us, out of Thy grace, a protector, and raise for us, out of Thy grace, one who will bring us succor!" (4:75). Indeed, the biblical prophets were on a mission to deliver a message to believe in One God and to deliver people from darkness to light. Hence, religious freedom and human rights are indistinguishable.

At the same time, the Quran calls for freedom of religion and expression: "Let there be no compulsion in matters of faith." (2:256) It calls for the free marketplace of ideas, especially when dealing with Christians and Jews (People of the Book): "And do not argue with the People of the Book unless it be in a way that is better, save with such of them as do wrong. But say, 'We believe in the Revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you. Our God and your God is One; and it is to Him we submit (in Islam).'" (29:46)

In Islamic law, there are five permanent goals agreed upon by all jurists to secure the rights of all people: they are the rights to life, expression, faith, family and property. Hence, neither freedom of expression nor freedom of faith can be compromised.

Countering anti-Muslim rhetoric, like opposing anti-Semitism, is a noble cause. But there's a fine line between hate speech and hate crimes. We need to ensure that any legislation dealing with religious freedom does not curtail free speech. If certain speech incites violence, then legislation should be based on the crime and not the speech.

Therefore, Islamic teachings direct humanity to protect both religious freedom and free speech. The only means to effectively oppose bigotry and intolerance is through social, political and cultural programs educating people about the truth. We cannot impose the truth on others but we can be examples of what the truth manifests. That requires leadership in all sectors of society. Without leadership, we are left with two bad options — ignoring religious persecution or curtailing free speech.

Salam Al-Marayati is the executive director and one of the founders of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), a public service, nonprofit, nonpartisan agency that disseminates accurate information about Islam and Muslims to the media and to elected officials. For 20 years, he has worked tirelessly to promote harmony between Muslims and their fellow Americans through interfaith dialogue and working in concert with local and national officials. Al-Marayati has made countless appearances in major national media outlets to discuss issues pertinent to Americans and American Muslims.

Free Speech Must Be Balanced Against the Rights of Others By Maha Elgenaidi, Executive Director and President

The First Amendment of the Constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech … ," thereby binding together these two important concepts in the consciousness of its citizens, and in many ways differentiating the United States from other nations. Both freedoms have been challenged in the brief history of the United States, but both concepts have prevailed in the long term, reflecting an underlying assumption that to limit either would be more detrimental than any possible challenges arising from their application.

Yet the question arises: Is there ever a circumstance that would warrant the curtailing of free speech to ensure religious freedom?

One finds that even under the Constitution, there are limits that balance one's right to free speech against the rights of others, including limits on "the lewd and obscene, the profane, the libelous, and the insulting or 'fighting' words — those which by their very utterance inflicted injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace." (Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire (1942)) For example, the U.S. Supreme Court has taken the position that states can constitutionally ban acts such as cross burnings, which, it can be argued, are an expression of "free speech."

One can point to episodes when unfettered free speech allowed the spread of toxic ideas with horrifying results. In perhaps the most notorious example, Nazi Germany made extensive use of hate speech and virulent propaganda. Even in the United States, we witnessed the impact of anti-Japanese vitriol within our borders during World War II. Violations against humanity do not happen in a vacuum, but are often preceded by a slow and insidious program of hatred advanced by the spoken or written word.

Today, in light of recent events in the United States and ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the political climate has put a new group of people at risk — Muslims in the West, who since 9/11 have been a target of increased discrimination, harassment and hate crimes. In the aftermath of the tragic Ft. Hood attacks and the Christmas Day attempted airline bombing, reports of mosque vandalism, hate crimes and other incidents have soared. In this context, the freedom to denigrate another's religion is no longer a purely legal issue, but takes on other dimensions. It has been noted that an important precursor to genocide is the denigration and dehumanization of the target group, which prepares the public for the suspension of its rights.

As the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implements actions that are viewed by some as ethnic profiling at airports, it is not a great leap to envision curtailment of civil liberties and an increase in hate crimes and other incidents against Muslims.

The question then arises, are we willing to risk harm to others for an absolute interpretation of an important principle? There is no simple answer, but it is important to note that even under the Constitution, the right to free speech is not absolute, but must be balanced against the rights of others and the welfare of the general public.

In the spirit of positive change, we urge people of all faiths and backgrounds to view this issue, not as a reason to divide us, but as an opportunity for dialogue, understanding and bridge building.

Guan Eng berkata, Zahrain masih menjadi pengerusi IGP iaitu anak syarikat perbadanan negeri, PDC.

-MSTAR

"Guan Eng Pecat Saya Sebagai Pengerusi GLC Negeri" - Zahrain

-MSTAR

Boleh Singkir PM Tanpa Undi Tidak Percaya

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 11:42 PM PST

Aziz berkata demikian ketika ditemubual

Laporn : Malaysian Insider Video : TVS
