The Menace That Is Called Drugs!

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 07:40 AM PST

I don't know if any of you still remember. Quite a while back I wrote about a cousin of mine who was into the world of drugs. He was in and out of it and well, recently I heard he was back into the game. The thing is I'm not surprised anymore. At one time, I really thought just might kick the habit for good. I thought he was on the road to getting his life back on track. Well, after so many false tries, I've given up being surprised when I hear he's back into it.

What a wasted life. Why do people even get involved in drugs in the first place? I see no logic in it. We all know what drugs can do and yet some people like my cousin would just get drawn to it time and time again.

The worst thing is the excuses I hear about why people get involved in drugs, they're so lame.

'I'm too stressed out, just wanna try it and see what it's like, I've just got too many problems, I need an escape, etc, etc, etc ...'

I've got so many problems too and half the time I'm stressed to the point of wanting to jump off a building but you don't see me using drugs as an avenue to release the stress and worries? Drugs can screw your life big time, not to mention the people around you that cares about you. The fact that this cousin has dabbled in drugs is the cause of why his parents are having such a hard life.

Maybe he should have started on one of those rapid detox sessions earlier on in his life, then just maybe he could have been saved. This concept rapid detox combines the medicine of withdrawal with the benefits of anesthetics.

In the old days, it could take days or weeks of pain and suffering going cold turkey to rid your body of all the drugs but these days a typical rapid detox session involves being put under with general anesthetics for about 2 to 8 hours which has a host of cleaning medication that runs through your body trying to flush out the addictive substance from inside your body.

The process is really pretty simple and the patient doesn't feel any pain or suffering at all and wakes up in 2 to 8 hours with a fresh new start on the road to sobriety. I don't really know if something like this would have really worked for him but if this was available back then, he probably would have kicked the habit much faster.

I only hope that one day he'll come to his senses and start thinking about his future and what this drug habit of his is doing to him and his family. He's such a bright boy or rather he was such a bright boy and for him to actually get involved in drugs was one of the stupidest things to do.

Oh well, he isn't my son and I really don't care anymore. It's his life and if he wants to remain a useless human being for the rest of his life, then he's welcomed to it. As for me, I know I'll keep an eye on my kids and make sure they NEVER ever get anywhere near drugs in any form!

Dr Xavier Defends His Position - story by malaysiakini

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 08:00 AM PST

aNt's aNgle:

I was at the press conference at the Klang police station last Friday.

I arrived there a little after 11am where a small crowd had already gathered to give YB Dr Xavier Jayakumar their support.

He was already in the police station making his report. After nearly a half an hour wait outside the police station, the YB emerged and at once delivered his press conference.

It was interesting to note how well the other people who had gathered there thought about him:

Selangor exco Xavier Jayakumar lodged a police report at Klang police station this morning, claiming several individuals had made baseless and false allegations against him.
xavier jayakumar make police report 050210 01The report was made against Klang's Parents Teachers Association chairperson, G Jeganathan.

He also named former Selangor PKR treasurer, KS Kotappan, in the report.
Jaganathan had lodged a police report against Xavier on Jan 17, 2010 over allegations that the Xavier (photo, middle) had misused the state's Tamil schools education allocation amounting to RM1.67 million.

Jaganathan, in his report, alleged misappropriation when Xavier channelled the money to three Indian non-government organisations (NGOs).

The police, in their investigation, questioned Xavier, the Sri Andalas assemblyperson two days later.

The amount was channelled to NGOs- Child Information, Learning and Development Centre (Child), Tamil Foundation Malaysia, and Educational, Welfare and Research Foundation.

Program coordinator for the NGOs, K Arumugam, has cleared the air surrounding the controversy.

He said that the three NGOs have collectively received RM1,588,380 from the Selangor state government to improve Tamil schools in Selangor.

The allocation has been used to fund various programs such as extra classes for slow learners, schools surveys and student awareness camps, to improve the educational standards of the underprivileged.

Wonder Girls release Chinese version of Nobody

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 05:37 AM PST

Korean pop group Wonder Girls have released a Mandarin version of their hit song Nobody (audio only, MV to be embedded once available)…

The pop group which undergone a member reshuffle last month, is set to release their first Mandarin album on February 12. The album will consist mostly Chinese version of their Korean hit songs, i.e. Nobody, So Hot and Tell Me etc.

Their Chinese sounds more natural than their English; and they should find that it's much easier to penetrate the Chinese market as compared to the US. The girls are also set to release their full English album in April.

Saiful Mangsa Liwat Atau Saiful Peliwat?

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 06:58 AM PST

Saya terbaca dua isu menarik mengenai budak Sayfool dalam blog Kami Sokong Tok Guru . Hangpa bacalah dulu, kemudian buat tafsiran sendiri.

- Bernama.

Hmmm... gua cuma terfikir beberapa perkara saja dari keterangan budak sepol ni...;

-pendikargunung

Illustrasi Keterlaluan, PAS Kelantan Buat Laporan Polis Terhadap Blog

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 05:55 AM PST

"Tapi malang, sebaliknya berlaku.

The Maker of the document is the best person. -TVS

Saiful Dijangka Akan Disoalbalas Oleh Peguam Pembela Esok

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 03:53 AM PST

AMK Kesal Pemimpin UMNO Perolokkan Jemputan Ikhlas TGNA

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 03:16 AM PST

-TVS

'You shall fight the Jews and kill them'

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 01:40 AM PST

Remember our Great Leader's call that Jews 'had to be periodically massacred' Well he is an ardent fan of the Palis. Yeap, give them a state.

"PATV sermon: 'Jews are enemies of Allah and humanity - Kill them," by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik for Palestinian Media Watch, February 1:

U Tube has removed the above clip from it's library, as it was flagged.

The following is the transcript of excerpts of the hate speech in a mosque broadcast on PA TV:

"The loathsome occupation in Palestine - its land and its holy places - by these new Mongols and what they are perpetrating upon this holy, blessed and pure land - killing, assassination, destruction, confiscation, Judaization, harassment and splitting the homeland - are clear proof of [unintelligible word - Ed.] hostility, of incomparable racism, and of Nazism of the 20th century. The Jews, the enemies of Allah and of His Messenger, the enemies of Allah and of His Messenger! Enemies of humanity in general, and of Palestinians in particular - they wage war against us using all kinds of crimes, and as you see - even the mosques are not spared their racism...

"Oh Muslims! The Jews are the Jews. The Jews are the Jews. Even if donkeys would cease to bray, dogs cease to bark, wolves cease to howl and snakes to bite, the Jews would not cease to harbor hatred towards Muslims. The Prophet said that if two Jews would be alone with a Muslim, they would think only of killing him. Oh Muslims! This land will be liberated, these holy places and these mosques will be liberated, only by means of a return to the Quran and when all Muslims will be willing to be Jihad Fighters for the sake of Allah and for the sake of supporting Palestine, the Palestinian people, the Palestinian land, and the holy places in Palestine. The Prophet says: 'You shall fight the Jews and kill them, until the tree and the stone will speak and say: 'Oh Muslim, Oh servant of Allah' - the tree and the stone will not say, 'Oh Arab,' they will say, 'Oh Muslim'. And they will not say, 'Where are the millions?' and will not say, 'Where is the Arab nation?' Rather, they will say, 'Oh Muslim, Oh servant of Allah - there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.' Except for the Gharqad tree [tree mentioned in the Quran - Ed.], which is the tree of the Jews. Thus, this land will be liberated only by means of Jihad..."

Pak Lah Pun Nak Kritik Guan Eng

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 03:07 AM PST

Sekarang menantu Pak Lah pun dah senyap. Ada apa-apa yang tak kena ker?

Kiasu Malaysians

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 11:44 PM PST

Some Malaysians are blatantly kiasu. They are competitively selfish, if there ever is a term to describe those few who make other fellow countrymen look uncultured and rude. They jump queue. They refuse to yield in crawling traffic. They park in accessible parking because they have a baby and a pram, or are senior citizens.

Wuan and I were waiting for the elevator at Mid Valley Megamall yesterday. There were only two of us. Then came a family of several with two shopping trolleys full of groceries. The older of the group parked her trolley right outside the elevator door in front of me. When it opened, she rushed in followed by the rest. By the time they were all inside, there was no more space for me. No wonder children nowadays do not have manners. With grandparents and parents like these, it is not surprising at all.

The following incident happened a few weeks back. Traffic leaving The Gardens Mall always comes to a crawl just before closing time. Coming out from the underground car park, I have to switch from the right-most lane to the left-most to get to the Federal Highway to go home. I had slowly merged into the middle lane from the right. With my left-turn signal blinking, I was looking for an opportunity to merge into the left lane. Traffic was slow. I noticed a big gap and slowly eased in.

The front of my car was already in the left lane. The young man driving a white Myvi refused to yield. He stepped on the accelarator to close the gap. Our cars came within inches of scraping against each other. I stopped and honked at him. He drove on as if nothing happened. When I turned left down the ramp to the Federal Highway, he was still stuck in the jam going to Old Klang Road and Petaling Jaya. What I could not understand was would allowing one car get ahead of him delay his journey home considerably in that traffic condition? I take back my words about crazy Penang and Ipoh drivers. Those in the Klang Valley are equally as bad.

The Gardens Mall has ten accessible parking bays at Level P2. Eight of these are beside the travelator, the other two outside the elevator lobby. Twice I came across parents with babies parking their cars at the accessible parking bays. One had a pram. The other just carried the baby and walked off. No prams. Nothing! If every vehicle with a baby and a pram were to park in these bays, ten would certainly not be enough. Shopping malls nowadays are crawling with prams and strollers. And parents such as these are lazy and inconsiderate. They abuse these facilities for their own convenience and deprive other people who genuinely need it from using it.

Are senior citizens entitled to park at accessible parking bays? Yes, if they have a mobility impairment or are using a wheelchair. No if they can walk, almost gallopping, from the car park to the travelator. These old couple, looking around sixtyish seemed to think otherwise. Two weeks ago, I was waiting for Wuan to lock the car. This elderly couple conveniently parked their car beside ours. The wife hopped out and walked away quickly. The husband look at me, shooked his head, smiled and walked away in equal haste. I looked at him in disbelief. Before I could react, they were already on the travelator and then disappeared from my sight in a blink. The same car was parked in the accessible parking bay a few weeks before that, too.

Thank God, these bad examples of human decency are the exception. I have also come across very polite and thoughtful people who allow me to get into the elevators first or have offered their place in the queue to me, which I declined most times. If I could spend hours shopping in the malls, there should not be a reason why I could not spend another ten minutes waiting in line to pay.

Malaysians calling our Singaporean neighbours kiasu should think twice. Some of us on this side of the causeway are no better. In fact, I have a number of Singaporean friends who are very nice people. This is not exclusively a nationality thing. Some of us, irrespective of colour or creed, simply do not have what it takes to be civil and courteous while others have an abundance of it. It is about how we were brought up. It is all about manners.

Wave goodbye as the world overtakes us, Ultra-Nationalists in Myanmar and Malaysia

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 10:36 PM PST

Source: Wave goodbye as the world overtakes us, folks, the letter by An Angry Parent in Malaysiakini
Please read back my old posting, "English language advocates are not traitors" for my personal experience and feelings about this topic. And you could taste the views of TDM quoted by me there.

Over the last couple of months, parents like myself watched helplessly as our political leaders across the political divide wilted and succumbed to partisan political pressure that resulted in the discontinuation of the teaching of mathematics and the science in English in our public school system within the next few years.

By taking the path of least resistance for short-term political gain and support, our political leaders have sold out and assigned the future of the next generation of Malaysians and those that follow to the scrapheap of posterity.

To those who thrive on partisan politics in the name of patriotism or the preservation of mother tongues, my personal assessment may be considered far too harsh. Or is it? I wish to add that more often than not, such partisans who pass themselves off as educationists, fail to distinguish the differences between the global distribution and the penetration of a particular language.

For example, while the Chinese language has the highest penetration for any language, with an estimated 1.4 billion speakers, however, in terms of distribution, most speakers of the Chinese language are confined mainly to the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong and Macau), the Taiwanese Republic and Singapore. This is apart from the millions of overseas Chinese around the world whose first language may or may not be the Chinese language.

Although the English language lags behind with an estimated 1.3 billion speakers, it has the widest distribution covering 54 countries within the British Commonwealth across all six inhabited continents, in the US and is widely utilised within the European Union, particularly in the Scandinavian countries.

In fact, English is often the language of choice used in proceedings and documentation within the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), based in Geneva. English is not only advancing in the world of science and technology, it is also gaining momentum in countries where English is not even a national language.

The progressive evolution of international trade, ICT and education has changed this world into a border-less one. Partisans who continue to advocate a near-monolingual educational system in Malaysia will eventually paint themselves and the entire country into a corner.

Is it any wonder that so many of our local university graduates are not employable or marketable because most of them are monolingual? Many of these so-called educationists themselves are not employable in the private sector, nor are they prominent leaders in the world of science and technology.

To be a developed country, one needs a world-class educational system. Not one that is determined by partisan politics.

One of the best examples of a world-class educational system is found in Switzerland. Unlike most countries with only one or two national languages, Switzerland has four national languages, ie, German, French, Italian and Romansh. Apart from the four national languages and an extensive mathematics programme, all Swiss students are required to learn English as an international language.

Like Japan, Switzerland is a mountainous country that lacks natural resources and most Swiss are employed by small and medium industries. Yet Switzerland remains one of the richest countries in the world by per capita gross domestic product, with a nominal per capita GDP of no less than US$67,000. There is more to Switzerland than just private banking.

Today, at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ) or the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, nicknamed by some as the 'MIT of Europe', it is possible to complete a doctorate degree entirely in English.

In China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), a leading public academic institution in the science and technology, launched a roadmap entitled, 'Technological Revolution and China's Future Innovation 2050,' on June 10, 2009 in Beijing. This roadmap outlined 22 strategic technological and scientific issues that will be critical to the modernisation of China in the next 40 years, which includes green energy technology, nano-technology, material science, space science and a host of other scientific and technology subjects.

This roadmap was prepared by 300 leading Chinese scientists and technologists. All subsequent research and studies arising from this roadmap will be published in both Chinese and in English. The CAS also has a fully functional website in English. More than 250 scientists from the CAS have held positions in various international organisations outside of China, an achievement highly valued by the academy. Yet we have partisans back home in Malaysia calling for the discontinuation of the teaching of Mathematics and the Sciences in English.

In addition, online courses and reference materials are blooming on the Internet. Most of them are in English. Leading technical institutions, such as, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have made a wide range of lectures by its teaching staff freely available over the Internet through its OpenCourseWare (OCW) programme.

The Public Library of Science (PLoS), a non-profit organisation of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource, is publishing papers covering biology, medicine, computational biology, genetics, pathogens and tropical diseases which are, likewise, freely available through its website.

Other leading institutions, such as the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) are joining hands with MIT in this effort. They have even set up channels on YouTube. College students around the world can now experience and access world-class lectures from MIT, UCB and CMU, minus the fees, from YouTube.

However, Malaysian students will be one of the biggest losers in this case because, as mentioned before, all these materials are in the English language.

With the introduction of ICT tools and devices like the Apple iPad and Sony's E-Book Reader, more publications in science and technology will be made available in the English language at incredible low costs. More people who are not conversant in the English language will be left behind.

Therefore, is it any wonder that our 'brain drain' is literally irreversible, the multimedia super- corridor remains nothing more than a real-estate project and our biotechnology park and 'rubber city' remain a far-fetched dream.

In taking one step forward, the country has taken two steps backward. And for all this, we have our short-term thinking politicians to thank for.
