who are the bumiputera?

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 09:26 AM PDT

who are the real bumiputera? is there such a thing as bumiputera?

(pic by witsO)

from malaysiakini:

The debate as to the status and rights of the Orang Asli was triggered after Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz told Parliament yesterday that the defintion of 'bumiputera' included the Malays, the natives of East Malaysian and also the Orang Asli of the Peninsular.

However, while federal constitution does not mention the term 'bumiputera', Article 153 of it says that 'special privileges' are to be extended only to the Malays and the natives of Sabah and Sarawak.

so what does that means? that means though the orang asli may qualify as bumiputera but they are not qualified for special privileges!! but wait… bumiputera? how and where does bumiputera comes in? it was stated that bumiputera was not found in the constitution.

The term 'bumiputera' is absent in the constitution. It's recognised to be a social-politcal invention of the BN government to place the Malays and other 'sons of the soil' in a category separate from other Malaysians.

aha! just as i thought. it's all the work of BN, particularly umno of course.

anyway one interesting  comments at malaysiakini is this one from kaykay. according to him, to classify the orang asli as bumiputera is an insult because just about anybody can be bumiputera!!  you just masuk islam, and hey presto!… you are a bumiputera. he mentioned even pakistani, bangladeshi, etc are bumipuera. here's what kaykay has to say:

Legally speaking, it's not possible to place the Orang Asli in the same category as the Bumiputera since that would be downgrading them. Even in Sabah & S'wak, the Natives there prefer to be known as Natives rather than Bumiputera. They know that any Tom, Dick, Prick & Harry can become a Muslim, call himself a Malay & be considered a Bumiputera. This has seen Indians, Pakistanis & Bangladeshis in Sabah being classified as Malays & Bumi. In S'wak there is an Indian Muslim Minister in the Taib Gov't. He's a member of PBB (Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu) which is meant only for Bumis. Daud is in because he's considered Malay & therefore a Bumi. Back to Sabah, there was the infamous case recently of Salman the Pakistani who was even born in Pakistan. Yet he managed to apply for a MyKad where he was listed as being born in Ranau. He's considered Malay & a Bumi & no less than former Sabah Chief Minister Harris Salleh himself turned up in court to vouch for him. So, the court had to release him.

anyway, i was thinking as bumiputera means 'sons of the soil', then since we were born in malaysia, so aren't we all sons of the soil?? so there shouldn't be bumiputera at all OR if there is a bumiputera, it should mean ALL of us!!

funny. this reminds me of our national anthem, the line which goes "tanah tumpahnya darahku". all of us were born in malaysia,  all of us were sons of the soil in malaysia, all of us feel this is our 'tanah tumpahnya darakhku' – then why is it that only malays are classified as bumiputera? ok ok i know… all because of umno's doing.

before i go, here's another part of the comment in malaysiakin, which i would like to share with all because this is what i feel too but as i said being cautious not to say it out! (something in what i said that i met some orang asli face to face and what they told us straight from their mouth, which i find unprintable!).

from anak malaysia:

Sadly, the only thing the Govt seriously pursued all these years is the systematic Islamization of the Org Aslis. Villagers are tempted with carrot of development to convert to Islam. Those villages which refuse to convert are denied development. This is governance by bad faith! There is even a policy to Islamize all OAs by a certain year! Suraus are built in villages with no Muslim population. Churches in Christian majority villages are torn down. Thousands of imams are placed in non Muslim villages so that the OAs "are not deprived of Islamic education". Not that they wanted or asked for this in the first place! JHEOA is staffed with Malay Muslims to the exclusion of OAs themselves, and they become govt tools of religious propoganda, instead of working for advancement of this poverty stricken community. Such is the aggressive Islamization efforts of the Govt. Same story amongst the natives of rural Sabah & Sarawak. Wake up people to the truth of what is going on in this land!

Zaharin Menepuk Air Di Dulang, Memercik Muka Sendiri

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 09:17 AM PDT

'Bumiputera' Orang Asli don't have 'special rights': experts

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 09:00 AM PDT

The question arose after Minister Nazri told Parliament that the term 'bumiputera' also included the Orang Asli of the Peninsular.

According to experts consulted by Malaysiakini, it is a little known fact but the Orang Asli are not included in the 'special privileges' category as defined by the federal constitution,

The term 'bumiputera' is absent in the constitution and recognised to be a social-politcal invention of the BN government to place the Malays and other 'sons of the soil' in a category separate from other Malaysians.

'Pendatangs' had better be grateful since they are not living like the original Orang Asli who according to Orang Asli rights activist Suhaimi Saad, there are Orang Asli villagers in Pahang who live on RM10 a month while others live at rubbish dumps and source food from the trash.

MTUC Desak Kerajaan Serius Hayati Masalah Rakyat

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 08:42 AM PDT

1Malaysia: Apco denies any role, gives credit to Najib. Good! So, Najib's idea came from where? One Israel?

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 08:11 AM PDT

In response to statements made in Parliament - Apco
MARCH 18 — In the course of Parliamentary debate in Malaysia on March 17, 2010, inaccurate statements were made regarding Apco Worldwide and its role in Malaysia, as well as its work, past and present, in relationship to other governments.
In 2009, the Government of Malaysia retained Apco, an international strategic communications company with 29 offices throughout the world, to assist in evaluating its capabilities to communicate through new media. Apco was also asked to assist the Malaysian government by sharing recent developments in strategic communication undertaken by governments in Europe, North America and Africa.
Apco's work has included communication support for a broad range of reform initiatives undertaken by the government of Malaysia, especially in the areas of creating jobs, promoting education, and strengthening delivery of services to the people. Apco is honoured to be provided the opportunity to assist the government in this important work.
However, contrary to statements made in Malaysia's Parliament, 1 Malaysia was conceived of by the Prime Minister Dato' Sri Najib Razak prior to the government of Malaysia retaining Apco. Apco had no role of any kind in creating the 1 Malaysia concept, which was fully formed, and made public, prior to Apco's engagement.
It is also incorrect that Apco represented the Government of Israel or Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak as has been alleged in Malaysia's Parliament. At no time has Apco been involved with a public relations campaign relating to a "One-Israel" concept. The statement in Malaysia's Parliament that Apco was involved in such a campaign is false.
Apco is proud of its work over the past 25 years providing strategic communication services to many governments, including the Government of Malaysia. Apco has also provided services to many of the world's leading companies and to international institutions such as the World Bank, United Nations, the European Commission and Asean, among others.

PRU13 Umno-BN Akan Terjejas Jika Terus Nafikan Royalti Rakyat Kelantan - Ku Li

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 06:54 AM PDT

Orang panggil menentang arus.

-MI

Second time in a week Ramli Yusuff acquitted: Justice for righteous Ramli!!

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 06:51 AM PDT

UPDATED 3:01PM MACC has failed in its bid to take the case to higher level as it was flawed from the very beginning.

Justice Abdul Rahman Sebli of the Sabah High Court today upheld the Sessions Court decision to acquit former state police chief, Ramli Yusuff on a charge of using a police aircraft for his personal interests three years ago and said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (previously the Anti-Corruption Agency) case was flawed from the beginning.

This is second time this week that Ramli has emerged victorious in court after being acquitted on Friday of three counts of failure to declare his assets with the MACC.

Palestinians offered 100 percent of Gaza and 95 percent of the West Bank.

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 06:27 AM PDT

A defeated people should know when they are conquered. Do not the Palestinians, not realise that they are a defeated people. Islam comes way too late in history to lay claim to Jerusalem "The Holy City," Islam is on the wrong side of history. As in Constantinople, the Christians moved on, only to be slaughtered by the Turks, who deny their infamy until today. Defeated Arabs cannot demand too much. Look at what happened in India. They allowed the descendants of genocidal maniacs to establish a state on the blood of Hindus.!!!

Apparently, some things cannot be tolerated. For example, while Vice President Joe Biden was visiting Israel last week, Jerusalem's Regional Planning Council announced its approval of plans to construct apartments for 1,600 Israeli families in Israel's capital, Jerusalem. "I condemn the decision by the government of Israel to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem," Biden said in a statement. "Condemn" is a word seldom used in diplomatic parlance — least of all in reference to an ally.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately offered profuse apologies, but top Obama adviser David Axelrod nevertheless appeared on a Sunday talk show to complain that the White House had suffered "an affront, an insult." Commentators on National Public Radio fumed that Israel's behavior was "a slap in the face" and "too much to bear."

Apparently, other things are not so difficult to tolerate. For example, Fatah, the Palestinian organization that wields power in the West Bank, last week named a square in the town of El Bireh in memory of Dalal Mughrabi, the terrorist who in 1978 hijacked an Israeli bus and massacred 37 Israeli civilians — 13 of them children — and an American photographer. No one in the Obama administration or the elite media seemed to think this deserved condemnation or even serious criticism.

How do you explain the strange calculus that condemns building homes for citizens and condones celebrating terrorism? You start by understanding not how the "peace process" works — because it doesn't — but how "peace processors" think.

They have convinced themselves that the Palestinians will make peace with the Israelis when and if the Israelis make sufficient concessions. So the pressure must always be on the Israelis to offer more concessions.

Building apartments in Ramat Shlomo — a Jewish neighborhood that has become overcrowded and therefore requires denser housing — signals that the Israelis mean to stay in Jerusalem. That's not really surprising: Jews have lived in Jerusalem for the past 3,000 years. But, in the view of the peace processors, offering part of Jerusalem for inclusion in a future Palestinian state is a concession that will be necessary in exchange for Palestinian agreement to halt terrorism and recognize Israel as a permanent presence in the Middle East.

Historical footnote: The Palestinians did agree to halt terrorism and recognize Israel when they signed the 1993 Oslo Accords. But terrorism continued all the same, and now both Hamas and "more moderate" Fatah say they are "not bound" by those commitments.

Second historical footnote: At Camp David in 2000, Israel's then–prime minister Ehud Barak offered the Palestinians sections of East Jerusalem in which they would be able to establish the capital of a state that also would comprise 100 percent of Gaza and 95 percent of the West Bank. Then-leader of the Palestinians Yasser Arafat turned the offer down and launched a bloody intifada. In 2008, Israel's then–prime minister Ehud Olmert made a similar offer. No Palestinian leader was interested. The motto of the peace processors could be: Live and don't learn.

A third historical footnote: Israelis have demonstrated that, in the pursuit of peace, they will give up land to which they believe they have a legitimate claim and even dismantle established communities. In 1967, Israel prevailed in a defensive war against Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and other Arab neighbors. That's how it came to occupy Gaza, which, prior to the war, had been ruled by Egypt. Subsequently, Israeli settlements were established in Gaza. Nevertheless, in 2005, Israel removed them all in the hope that turning this "occupied territory" over to Palestinians would promote peace. Instead, Gaza was taken over by Hamas, which — backed by Iran — almost immediately began to rain missiles on Israeli civilians. Continued here to Clifford May's article in Page 2

Abdullah Karim Siap Sedia Untuk Dipanggil

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 05:54 AM PDT

-mk

Pemimpin PAS Disebut Cuba Jatuhkan Kerajaan PR Selangor

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 04:38 AM PDT

Open Letter to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Vice-Prime Minister Bülent Arınç

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 03:26 AM PDT

There is something I have difficulty understanding. You, who have put an end to ninety-five years of the "there are no Kurds, they're just Turks who wander around the mountains" lying policies by the state; who have removed the military's guardianship over politics, the same military that since the beginning of this Republic has decided who lived and who died and that initiated coups at the drop of a hat; how is it that you who have made such important inroads into this democracy insist on continuing the ninety-five years of denialist policies when it comes to the subject of 1915?

All of us believed that when you signed those protocols with Armenia in October 2009, the ninety-five years of lies surrounding 1915 were coming to an end, just as they had on the Kurdish issue. Could it be that when you signed those protocols you believed that you were going to come to a resolution while you continued the ninety-five year old policies of denial? Doesn't seem possible….Could you have found a way out of the Kurdish problem by continuing to insist that "There are no Kurds, they're just Turks who wander around mountains"? If you had stayed loyal to the logic of the problem solving methods of the military when it came to the Kurds, whereby they were equated with terrorist organizations, treating the Kurds as "nails" and the military as the "hammer," would you have found a way out of the impasse?

Well, it seems to appear that you seriously think you are going to find a resolution to the Armenian problem by continuing the ninety-five year old lie. Anyone opposing this view on the Armenian issue is the "nail" and you are the "hammer"….trying to intimidate the U.S., posturing like a bully…is this how you're going to remove a ninety-five year old gangrene? Mr. Prime Minister and Mr. Arınç, if it could have been fixed this way, don't you think it would have been, long ago? Heck, who even needs you then…Şükrü Elekdağ [the former Turkish ambassador to the U.S.] would have fixed it; Veli Küçük [a retired major general linked to Hrant Dink's assassination] would have found a neat solution…right?

So, what happens if tomorrow Obama decides it's time to call your bluff and gives you a taste of your own medicine? What if he comes out with a statement saying "You want to shut me up or get me to tell a lie by threatening me! You're trying to force me to deny what I believe to be true with threats! Shame on you! Aren't you the slightest bit embarrassed to be threatening me like that? I'm not lying any more….I am going to state what I believe about 1915. It was genocide." What are you going to do then? Kes Datuk Ramli : SPRM Tewas Dalam Rayuan Ketepikan Keputusan Mahkamah Sesyen

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 03:23 AM PDT

Kita Akan Serang Balik Kenyataan Askar Upahan BN

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 01:37 AM PDT
