Former MCA president Ong Ka Ting said though he had promised in the past that he would not seek re-election, the current state of affairs with the party has made him reconsider.

Yet again, another Chinese leader (or ex-leader?!) that cannot keep to his words!

Senior citizens to receive RM100 annually from the Penang government!

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 08:46 AM PDT

Senior citizens who are entitled to RM100 under the Senior Citizens Appreciation Programme want their cash from the Penang government to be either directly distributed or banked into their accounts.

In a press statement issued today, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the money (RM100 voucher) will be posted to recipients at their home addresses, to be redeemed at any Maybank branch, after the launch of the Senior Citizens Appreciation Programme in Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang on Mar 21.

This latest move is to facilitate the disbursement of the funds and reduce inconvenience caused to senior citizens who would otherwise have to visit a constituency under a Pakatan Rakyat representative to receive the RM100.

Indeed, this gesture of goodwill is one small step towards a caring society. Not even Mahathir in his 22 years as PM could do something similar under his vision 2020 to 'Mewujudkan masyarakat penyayang dan budaya menyayangi'.

SPR Tak Perlu Bersandiwara Dalam Isu Pilihanraya PBT

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 08:12 AM PDT

Malaysia's Disastrous Capital Flight

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 07:50 AM PDT

Money leaves the country on an unprecedented scale

Churches are not the only thing to have been going up in flames in Malaysia. Take a look at the nation's foreign exchange reserves. They fell by close to 25 percent during 2009 according to investment bank UBS even though the country continued to run a huge surplus on the current account of its balance of payments.

Says UBS: "Question: which Asian country had the biggest FX losses in 2009?" The answer is Malaysia and by a very large margin; we estimate that official reserves fell by well more than one quarter on a valuation-adjusted basis". It describes the situation as "bizarre" and contrasts Malaysia with other countries with large current account surpluses – Thailand, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong – which have seen their reserves increase – as should be expected.

In short there has been an exodus of money from Malaysia on a scale which surpasses that which occurred during the Asian crisis. Nor is this just a mirage. The decline is also reflected in a sudden decline in base money supply – even while, thanks to Bank Negara, broader M2 has continued to grow modestly.

Who is responsible for this massive outflow? And where has it gone? The questions cannot be answered from the data and probably will not be by a government that knows its own state-controlled enterprises, headed by Petronas, may probably be responsible for part of it. The more certain reason however is the outflow of local private capital has been taking place on an unprecedented scale in response to political instability, massive official corruption and discrimination against non-Malays.

This capital bloodletting has as yet attracted little attention because Malaysia's foreign debt levels had declined dramatically since the Asian crisis and its reserves reached very healthy levels. So the outflow has not disturbed the financial markets, and Bank Negara has easily been able to keep interest rates low and the currency strong.

But unlike 1998, when the exodus of hot foreign money was a major contributor to the crisis, foreigners cannot be blamed. There is little speculative interest in the ringgit and the Malaysian bourse has rather fallen off the map as far as foreign institutional money is concerned. The BRICs, India, China, Russia, Brazil have taken the merging market lead once dominated by Southeast Asia.

Nor is there much evidence that the Middle East money which was supposed to be flowing into Muslim Malaysia, into holiday apartments or Johor's massive Iskandar development zone, has been much in evidence. Malaysia's one recent success, the development of its sukuk (Islamic bond) market may have caused more capital outflow than inflow. At any rate any overall net inflow of foreign capital whether into bonds, equities, factories or real estate has been dwarfed by the exodus of Malaysian money.

The latter is reflected in the weakness of private sector investment, which now trails public investment. Indeed it explains why the economy remains weak despite very healthy prices for most of Malaysia's commodity exports. The nation has been running a current account surplus of more than 10 percent of gross domestic product for the past decade and hit about 17 percent of GDP in the year just ended. Initially this surplus was needed to pay down debt accumulated during the mid-1990s Mahathir boom years and to rebuild foreign exchange reserves to healthy levels.

But subsequently it became simply a consequence of the weakness of private investment. Domestic investors were discouraged by the corrupt and warped system and foreigners moved to China and elsewhere. GDP growth has become ever reliant on government stimulus – again racially biased in its allocation -- financed by a persistently large budget deficit.

Meanwhile, publicly controlled capital has been rushing overseas. Petronas has been spending its billions in profits around the world as it attempts to become a major global player – at the expense of Malaysian citizenry in general and the oil and gas producing states in particular. Other government-controlled entities such as Malayan Banking Bhd have been bidding top dollar for foreign assets – such as Bank Internasional Indonesia.

Often with the exodus of money goes an exodus of talent as highly skilled persons disadvantaged by race or, as in the case of some Malays, disgusted by local corruption or primitive religious authorities, take themselves and their capital to Australia, Canada, India, China, etc.

The 2009 reserves loss may have had some specific cause which will not be repeated. But it has merely served to underline a dismal trend which has been in evidence for the best part of a decade. Malaysia has so far been saved from itself by the commodity price gains of the past five years – with even the late 2008 collapse now largely reversed. Oil and palm oil may be off their peaks but both are now double their prices of five years ago.

It is better not to imagine what will happen to Malaysia if prices collapse to 2004 levels and stay there. Better now to address the real reasons behind capital outflow and lack of private investment.

"Moderate" Palestinians name city square after mass-murdering jihad terrorist

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 07:46 AM PDT

What can you say about a 19-year-old woman, pretty in the pictures, who participates in a terrorist attack in which 38 people, 13 of them children, are killed in cold blood? The answer, if the woman is Palestinian and the dead are Israelis, is heroine or martyr -- and if she is Dalal Mughrabi, you name a school and a camp after her, and last week, a square in the West Bank town of El Bireh. It will be the fitting venue for those who furiously single out Israel for allegedly killing civilians in violation of all the rules of warfare. Hypocrisy Square would be its appropriate name.

To be sure, the dedication of Dalal Mughrabi Square was a low-key affair. This is because the Palestinians, unlike the Israelis, had the wit not to be so crude while Vice President Biden was more or less in town. Consequently, the official ceremony was postponed and only one senior Fatah leader made an appearance. In contrast, the Israelis honored Biden by announcing that even more building projects would be constructed in East Jerusalem. This was apparently done for two reasons: to reassert Israel's claim to all of Jerusalem and to impede a revival of peace talks.

Still, even in the Middle East, reality is more important than perception. If the term "confidence-building measure" is employed, what confidence can Israelis have in a people and their leaders who honor the 1978 murder of innocents, particularly children? I am aware that terrorism is the warfare of the weak, and I am aware also that Jews used terrorism against the British before Israel became a nation in 1948. But even those rare instances of terrorism were directed against the military and when they were not -- the massacre of Arabs at the village of Deir Yassin -- they were condemned by the Zionist leadership. To my knowledge, there is no square in Israel named for the mass murderers of civilians. Palestinian society, in contrast, honors all sorts of terrorists.

This is not a minor point. The veneration of terrorists says something unsettling about Palestinian society. An Israeli can recognize the legitimacy of Palestinian aspiration and appreciate the depth of the calamity that befell the Palestinians in 1948. The Palestinian intellectual Constantine Zurayk coined the term "al-Nakba" (the disaster) for their 1948 debacle -- and there is no doubt it was. But for Palestinians, that disaster has only been compounded by an Arab intransigence and belligerence that has played into Israel's territorial ambitions, particularly the annexation of East Jerusalem. The reliance on terrorism has had cinematic charms and given the Palestinians a certain cachet among the West's kaffiyeh set, but it has caused Israelis to dig in their heels. The adulation of Dalal Mughrabi and other terrorists is bound to give your average Israeli parent a certain pause: Is this the state we want next to us? Didn't pulling out of Gaza produce a steady drizzle of rockets and, in due course, another war?

Editorialists around the world were quite right to bash the government of Binyamin Netanyahu for its in-your-face rebuke to Biden -- even though, as the analyst Stephen P. Cohen explains, the decision by right-wing ministers was meant also as a rebuke to Netanyahu himself. These housing plans are more than just an irritant. They are a core issue. They proclaim the insistence of right-wing Israelis that all of Jerusalem will remain in Israeli hands on pragmatic grounds and because God wants it this way. For both reasons, a second opinion is in order but not, as it happens, sought.

Still, it would have been nice for those same editorialists to have paused in their anti-Israel jihad to wonder a bit about the virtually simultaneous Palestinian veneration of terrorists. In fact, the determination in the West, particularly Europe, not to hold Palestinians morally accountable for terrorism -- as well as their commonplace anti-Semitism -- is a repugnant form of neocolonial mentality in which, once again, the Palestinians are being patronized. I dare say the Brits would have reacted differently if a square in Belfast had been named for some IRA terrorist.

Washington's response to the Israeli government's announcement of additional housing was both harsh and appropriate -- an "affront" and an "insult," David Axelrod, President Obama's senior adviser, called it. He might have added "unnecessary" and "counterproductive." The incessant march of West Bank settlements and housing has to stop if there is to be any chance of reaching the vaunted two-state solution. At the same time, though, one of those states has to stop exalting terrorists.

Stop the settlements. Rename Dalal Mughrabi Square. Now let's talk. Richard Cohen in the Washington Post

Malaysia's Pussycats in the Year of the Tiger

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 07:40 AM PDT

The country's women need some empowering.

While around the world women's achievements in fields such as medicine, the arts, politics and film are celebrated, in Malaysia women are apparently a problem for men. The secretary-general of the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs), Ahmad Shah Mohd Zin, complained recently that too many women were in decision-making roles in the administrative and diplomatic service. Is Ahmad Shah afraid his own job might be taken over by the fairer sex?

Incredibly, the National Population and Family Development Board's message, reported in mainstream papers on March 11, was to make more babies and not put off marriage. Apparently, fertility rates had dropped from 3.4 in 1995 to 2.2 in 2007. Why is Malaysia obsessed with quantity and not quality? Or rather, why are men fascinated with size? Has it to do with what's in their pants? Are women only good for procreating? If those in senior civil-service positions perform well, then does it matter if they wear a skirt or wear trousers? If smaller families enjoy a good standard of living, are happier, can communicate better, have children with access to education, then are these of little or no consequence? If a woman delays marriage to grab opportunities that will eventually benefit her family, is that wrong? Maybe men have greater difficulty in appreciating women's capabilities and determination? Stories of the abuse of women -- sexual assaults, low pay and abandoned wives, feature in the news daily.

Women may have made their presence felt in the public sector, but contrary to what the Cuepacs secretary-general says, they do not dominate it. Statistics on Women, Family and Social Welfare 2009 show that there are only two female secretaries-general out of 24 ministries (8.3 percent), 12 female director-generals out of 70 departments (17.1 percent) and 11 female chief-executives out of 71 federal statutory bodies (15.5 percent).

In politics, males have been acting with increasing incompetence and immaturity. Men like Zulkifli Nordin and Ibrahim Ali, the leaders of Malay nationalist organizations, feel the need to inflame, incite and instigate with their racist rhetoric. One hopes a capable woman in a similar situation would have appealed to a person's innate good qualities, to inform, improve and inspire.

Where women are concerned, a dichotomy exists. They are told of the need to breed more, and yet more babies are abandoned. In reported cases of illicit sex, the women are whipped and humiliated in the national press, but the men's role is diminished and hardly mentioned. In high profile divorce cases, the women are portrayed as gold-diggers but the thousands of men who fail to pay maintenance to their ex-wives and children escape justice.

A Women's Aid Organization survey revealed in 1989 that 1.8 million or 39 percent of women over 15 were beaten by their husbands or boyfriends. Yet, only 909 women made a police report.

Modern Malaysia has more educated women who are also major or sole breadwinners. Although it ranks 77th in terms of gender gap in educational attainment, there exists a wide chasm in economic participation and political empowerment. Cultural upbringing digs deep into women's psyche and they have difficulty extricating themselves from outdated beliefs. They cling to the notion that husbands or boyfriends automatically qualify as the head of the household, to bully, dominate and control them.

Gender-equality is rarely practiced in Malaysia. When Manohara Odelia Pinot, the royal Indonesian teenage bride, sought refuge in Singapore, alleging abuse at the hands of her husband, her pleas for help were ignored. The Deputy Prime Minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, said that the Malaysian government "did not want to get involved." or "be dragged into this", and "to leave it as it is".

Any allegation of violence has to be investigated. No one is above the law. Nor should there be two sets of rules to cover royalty and the masses. The DPM's conflicting messages only encourage discrimination against women. His statements contradict the Government of Malaysia's stand on women's equality. (National Policy on Women 1989, UN Fourth World Conference on Women 1995, Action Plan for Women in Development 1997, formation of Women's Affairs Ministry 2001).

Both palace and politicians have devalued the role of women in the home and in politics. Violence against women is a crime and laws do exist to protect the rights of vulnerable women. But the laws that promote gender equality are few and the ones that guarantee protection against discrimination are weak.

Women's representation in parliament falls short of the 30 percent target in the 1995 Global Platform for Action, although women comprise half the total population and 40 percent of the workforce. When it comes to formulating laws pertaining to women (eg divorce, property, and tax), men neither want to accommodate women's views nor relinquish power. They possibly fear working with women. Instead of striving for the common good of women and society as a whole, men demand that decision-making be left to them.

Malaysian female politicians are allowed to debate a proposed bill in parliament, but are banned from voting for what they feel is the right decision, or what their conscience dictates. They are forced to toe the party line and act subservient. Incredibly, politicians like Bung Radin who insult them in parliament, are not censured.

Malaysia's current female politicians are disappointingly of the wrong calibre and range from timid to tainted. The Perak BN senior exco member, Hamidah Osman said that females could not become chief ministers because the minister, in the course of her duties, would have to meet religious officers and the Sultan. Hamidah's other claim to fame is her derogatory comparison of Indians and snakes that earned her the pseudonym 'snake woman'. But women can just as easily betray their party. When Hee Yit Foong defected from the Pakatan Rakyat party, her action helped precipitate the downfall of the Perak government. She remains one of the most reviled women in Malaysia today and is also known as 'frog' or 'traitor'.

The list is not limited to peninsular Malaysia either. In Sarawak, Fatimah Abdullah, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department, failed to speak up for Penan girls who were raped and sexually exploited by the timber loggers. Nor is the list exclusive to politicians. Wives of senior politicians have also been known further their husbands' careers using creative methods.

While it is the responsibility of all politicians to advance the rights of women, the female representatives themselves need to be prickly to promote equality and justice for their sex. They need to demonstrate commitment and passion. And women in Malaysia, regardless of their race or religion, must show their determination to save this nation by making a stand. Sometimes it is not the other sex that we have to worry about but one's own. Women's contribution can have tremendous impact on progress and growth. But then, where are the women of note in Malaysia?

Might Malaysia's problems be solved by a woman's long-term vision? If a mother is the glue that holds a family together, why can't a woman be the person that cements communities together? A mother usually considers all her children, with their different foibles, equally deserving of her love. So why can't a woman lead Malaysia out of its depressing state?

It won't be an overnight transition as the resistance to the leadership of women would be fierce. But few people realize that the windscreen wiper was invented by a woman named Mary Anderson in 1905. It was probably her predilection for clear vision through glass, or her fastidiousness with clean windows, that made her invent them.

Egypt scraps synagogue ceremony after Jews provoke "the feelings of millions of Muslims in Egypt and across the world"

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 07:38 AM PDT

How did they do that? By allegedly dancing and drinking alcohol inside the synagogue -- which sounds as if it could have been an ordinary and reasonable celebration under the circumstances. But Egyptian officials preferred to portray it as the dhimmis getting out of line.

CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt cancelled the formal opening Sunday of a renovated 19th-century synagogue in Cairo to protest what antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said were "provocative" Jewish and Israeli action. Hawass and Culture Minister Faruq Hosni were due to attend the event, a week after 150 people, including rabbis and the US and Israeli ambassadors, attended the rededication of the Maimonides synagogue.

Hawass, citing press reports, said in a statement that the cancellation comes after "provocative" acts during the March 7 ceremony in Cairo's ancient Jewish quarters by the Jewish community. He referred to "dancing and drinking alcohol in the synagogue, as reported by several newspapers" and said these acts "were seen to provoke the feelings of millions of Muslims in Egypt and across the world."

The decision was also taken at "a time when Muslim holy sites in occupied Palestine face assaults from Israeli occupation forces and settlers," Hawass said. He was referring to clashes at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and plans to include two contested West Bank holy shrines on a list of Israeli heritage sites. Hawass said this was also a "provocation."

The synagogue of Maimonides, known in Egypt by its Arabic name of Musa bin Maymun, is named after the 12th century Jewish scholar, philosopher and physician. Egypt began restoration of its Jewish sites several years ago.... Yahoo News. Hat tip: Jihad Watch

MCA BN Sudah Tidak Relevan, Pengundi Cina Tetap Bersama PR

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 07:22 AM PDT

-SK

Anwar says graft causing FDI drop. If not graft, then what? hehe...

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 08:36 AM PDT

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal
KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has claimed the Barisan Nasional government's poor governance and "endemic corruption" are behind falling foreign direct investment (FDI) in Malaysia.
The parliamentary Opposition Leader made the accusation in Parliament when asking the international trade and industry minister to explain the reasons behind the FDI drop despite liberalisation in several service sectors.
"Some important considerations have to be taken into consideration. Based on an Unctad report on December last year, the ability of Malaysia to attract foreign investments has dropped from number 62 to 66," Anwar (picture) said after the ministry's reply.
He then cited reports which, he claimed, proved Malaysia's drop in standing.
"Malaysia's figure stands at RM22.1 billion, while Singapore RM75.5 billion. Thailand and Indonesia have recorded RM27 million each.
"Why is Malaysia now trailing behind countries which were once behind Malaysia in development?" asked Anwar.
The minister, Datuk Mustapa Mohamad, charged that Anwar's claims were misguided and that Malaysia's economy was steadily improving.
"The economy of the country is stabilising. The unemployment rate dropped 3.6 per cent last year," he replied.
He maintained that what is happening in the country is an increase in competitive spirit.
"Things have become more competitive, but this does not mean the economy is declining," said Mustapa.
The minister then pointed out that positive measures have been taken by the government to ensure foreign investors come and invest in the country.
"If there is no pull factor, why do so many Japanese companies want to invest here?" asked Mustapa.

Even if investments do come in, WHO really benefits? The rakyat is still feeling the pinch. Prices of food have not gone down. Coffee shops in PJ are charging RM1.50 for a glass of barley. RM4.50 for economy rice with 2 types of vegetable and 1 type of meat.

Lebih 3 Batu Nautika Bukan Alasan Tolak Royalti

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 06:27 AM PDT

Dewan Rakyat Tolak Usul Royalti Minyak

-TVS

Rasuah, Urus Tadbir Tidak Telus Punca FDI Merudum

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 06:19 AM PDT

"Beberapa pertimbangan penting perlu diambil kira.

SK/TVS

I was named after this First Burmese Doctor who also translated the 1001 Arabian Nights into Burmese.

That doctor's name was Dr Syed Abdul Rahman.

By the way my father's name is Sheik (Syed) Mohammad Zafrudin. So my real name should be Dr Sheik Abdul Rahman.

For Myanmars who do not know about the history of Malaysia_

Malaysia's first Prime Minister was Tunku  Abdul Rahman or Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah. I wrote to him from Burma, applying for the job. His Secretary General Dato' Ahmad Noordin replied my letter and later given me the job.

Malaysia's first King was Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad.

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 03:55 AM PDT

11/3/2010:-

Four Martyred or Shaheed Burmese Muslim Saints (in Burmese)

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 03:24 AM PDT

Shahid (Arabic: شَهيد ‎ šahīd, plural: شُهَداء šuhadā', also romanized as shaheed) is an Arabic word meaning "witness". It is a religious term in Islam, meaning "witness", as stated, but most often "martyr." It is used as a title for Muslims who have died fulfilling a religious commandment, or waging war for Islam. (Wikipedia)

The shahid is considered one whose place in Paradise is promised according to these verses in the Qur'an

A woman is considered "shaheeda" (شهيدة) if she died during fulfillment of a religious commandment, but there is an argument among the Muslim sages as to whether a woman can participate in a war for religion. (Citation needed) There are examples of women fighting in war such as Nusaybah.

" Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord; They rejoice in the bounty provided by Allah. And with regard to those left behind, who have not yet joined them (in their bliss), the (martyr's) glory in the fact that on them is no fear, nor have they (cause to) grieve.
Qur'an3:169–170
" Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the Garden (of Paradise): they fight in His Cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in Truth, through the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran: and who is more faithful to his Covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme.
Qur'an9:111

Islam's prophet Muhammad is told to have said these words about Martyrs:

" The martyrs requested of Allah the following; "For the sake of you, o Allah, send us back to the world again so that we may be martyred once more".

Muslims also believe that Allah grants the reward of martyrdom to those who die in a variety of ways, including death during childbirth, accidents such as fires and drownings, and epidemic diseases such as the plague.[1]

Regardless of how death occurred, Muslims believe that the reward of martyrdom is contingent upon proper belief, sincerity, perseverance and thankfulness to God.[2]

Other uses

The term has also been used in this narrower sense by Arab Christians and by some Hindus but on the contrary by millions of Sikhs who have given their lives' since the founding of the religion by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

A Muslim who is killed defending his or her property (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Book 43, Number 660) is considered a martyr.

I found another grey hair on my head so I need another holiday

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 02:09 AM PDT

I woke up this morning thinking about our next holiday. I am so excited. We are going to the harem of monkeys! No, not Vegas.. you wish!

We are going to go and see the colony of the proboscis monkey – the horniest ape the world, that can only be found in SABAH! Yeaa Sabah, wa caya sama lu!

This is gonna be our second time in Borneo, first time I went there was to celebrate my birthday on Mount Kinabalu. This year I would like to celebrate my birthday in Sabah again, because I simply love the land below the wind. The landscape is gorgeous, the food delicious, the ocean crystal clear, the shopping spots exciting and well, the food delicious.

I only eat halal/kosher remember? So anyplace that serves great seafood get extra beanie points from me. Why do you think I haven't gone back to Bali since the first time? It is the pigs!! They were everywhere!! Babi guling here, babi guling there! What do you expect me to eat during my holidays? Maggi mee? Aiyoo.. I have enough of those during the nights that I am lazy to cook. And that is like… every other night, ok!

This time around we would like to take Miki to the River Safari as he loves animals very much and we want him to be a tough kid. Too much hanging out at the mall makes us weak. Once in while we all need to get back to nature.

I found out about this Sabah River Cruise/ River Safari during the recent Matta Fair and loved the idea about wildlife watching especially fireflies! Miki has never seen those, it would be a great experience for him. But I know very little about this activity.

Anybody has been on similar trip care to share experiences with me?

Another question that I was hoping somebody might answer to me – Has anybody died while snorkeling? Because I am afraid of water monsters but I would like to try.

OMG what about sharks? Is there any sharks in Sabah waters? *pengsan*

Ahli Parlimen PR Keluar Dewan Bantah Speaker

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 01:04 AM PDT

-SK
