Two years old -- a childhood obesity tipping point?
ScienceDaily (Feb. 12, 2010) — While many adults consider a chubby baby healthy, too many plump infants grow up to be obese teens, saddling them with Type-2 diabetes, elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure, according to an article published this month in the journal Clinical Pediatrics.

The research suggests that the "tipping point" in obesity often occurs before two years of age, and sometimes as early as three months, when the child is learning how much and what to eat.

"I really think this should be a wake up call for doctors," said principal investigator Dr. John Harrington, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and an assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School. "Too often, doctors wait until medical complications arise before they begin treatment. What this study suggests is that prevention of obesity should begin far, far earlier."

This study comes in the midst of alarming rates of childhood obesity, which now ranks as one of the most prominent health concerns in the United States today. While some hospitals have begun offering healthy eating and weight loss program for children, what hasn't been as clear is how early to intervene.

The researchers examined records from a pediatric practice of 111 children whose body mass index (BMI) exceeded 85 percent of the general population. Researchers determined that these children had started gaining weight in infancy at an average rate of .08 excess BMI units per month. On average, this progression began when the children were three months old. Over half the children became overweight at or before age 2 and 90 percent before reaching their 5th birthday.

The Clinical Pediatrics study suggests obesity prevention efforts should begin before age two, when children reach a "tipping point" in a progression that leads to obesity later in life.

"Our study suggests that doctors may want to start reviewing the diet of children during early well-child visits," said Harrington. "Getting parents and children to change habits that have already taken hold is a monumental challenge fraught with road¬blocks and disappointments. This study indicates that we may need to discuss inappropriate weight gain early in infancy to affect meaningful changes in the current trend of obesity."

So cute...two more months before two years of age!

The future of Najibonomics

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 07:17 AM PST

MARCH 1 — The more I learn about 1 Malaysia and the Najib Razak administration, the more convinced I am that this is all just another giant farce.

I cannot tell where this perception that Najib is more competent or principled than his predecessor is coming from.

1 Malaysia is all propaganda without results, and the actions of our government show it is more concerned with a good show rather than substance.

The latest propaganda triumph of the Najib regime is an impressive 4.5 per cent economic growth rate in the last quarter of 2009.

All well and good, but as Najib himself conceded, the growth was driven by unique conditions: the holiday season drove up consumer spending to a degree we cannot expect for the other three quarters of the year, and the government also ramped up its stimulus spending to boost aggregate demand.

This is not a sustainable economic recipe; it is not real, meaningful economic growth.

The government has been running deficits like mad for years, artificially boosting demand. Now, that is fine if we are doing it to keep pace with increasing aggregate supply.

Aggregate supply hinges on natural resources, technological innovation, and capital —both capital goods, and the more intangible human capital. And Najibonomics is a complete failure on the supply side, I can tell you right now.

In terms of capital, it is no secret that net investments in Malaysia are dropping off a cliff. Until about halfway through the Abdullah Badawi administration, net investment on an annual basis was hovering somewhere near zero—that is to say, foreign investments coming in roughly equaled Malaysian investments going out.

We want a positive level of saving and investment to boost our capital stock — but in the final years of the Badawi government, and now under Prime Minister Najib, we literally have seen investment drop off a cliff.

To put this in more concrete terms, what this means is that foreigners are refusing to invest in Malaysia, and Malaysians insist on investing their money overseas.

A back of the envelope calculation suggests that last year, Malaysians invested almost as much money in the entire Australian property market alone as foreigners invested in the whole of Malaysia.

Investors, both Malaysian and foreign, have completely lost confidence in our country — nobody wants to put money in Malaysia, and so our savings are flowing out of the country, instead of being invested in local enterprise.

Even if you don't invest directly, you are still probably being screwed. The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), eschewing the best practices of most other public pension funds around the world, concentrates its investments solely in Malaysia, ensuring our employees' pensions are subject to the risk of putting all their eggs in one single basket. Worse still, the Ministry of Finance manipulates the EPF portfolio at will to artificially prop up our stock market.

In other words, our financial markets are a farce built upon the farce of the EPF.

And speaking of economic farces, only about 10 per cent of working age Malaysians, or 1.5 million people, pay taxes. This isn't because of massive tax evasion — it's because only 1 out of every 10 Malaysians even earns enough to qualify for the income tax.

Even if we assume every last one of these Malaysians is a professional, square that with the 500,000 Malaysian professionals overseas. One out of every four Malaysian professionals lives and works abroad — our human capital stock stands at only 75 per cent of its full potential, and it is falling; last year, the emigration rate nearly doubled.

At home, our schools and universities are not training high-value workers, and our economy is distorted by rent-seekers.

When my father began working as an engineer thirty years ago, his salary was in the RM1,000 to RM2,000 range. That is still the case for a young engineer starting today—despite massive inflation and rising costs of living. Things are so bad that most of these young workers — who by right should be skilled professionals, commanding high wages — are not even eligible to pay income tax.

It's no wonder people are losing faith in Malaysia. We have no plan to fix our fundamentals.

Our school system discourages innovation in favour of accepting orders from above; our economic system stifles entrepreneurship in favour of corrupt rent-seeking.

Our prosperity is pump-primed by petroleum and forestry — when we run out of these resources, without any human capital or meaningful industrial enterprises, our economy will collapse.

Instead of bravely confronting these realities, Prime Minister Najib is content to proclaim our recovery from the global recession — as if all will be nice and dandy now.

He should be announcing an ambitious policy to reverse our capital outflows, reduce our dependence on natural resources, and improve our human capital.

This is a crisis in the making — with no investment, we cannot build up our industry, and with no human capital, we cannot compete in the knowledge economy; the problem goes beyond a short-term recession.

But these things do not concern Najib's regime.

After all, this is a regime of propaganda, not results. The government under Najib now brazenly seizes books it doesn't like from bookstores across the country. It blatantly rewrites history by contradicting Tengku Razaleigh, who helped draw up the original petroleum royalty agreements with the states.

There is no policymaking here—just propaganda.

The Barisan Nasional government is simply a ship of fools, content to lead us to disaster. They have no vision for the country, no idea of the massive challenges we face or any intention to face such challenges to begin with.

All this government does is pat itself on the back for putting on a good show. We deserve a government which lives in reality, not the neverland of 1 Malaysia. Why is this regime of "no action, talk only" supposed to be so much better than the alternatives?

Gobind : Laporan Tidak Lengkap Jejas Kredibiliti Pakar patologi Tempatan

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 08:02 AM PST

-TVS

Head hunt for candidates, and do it now!
It is time the opposition looked outside the party. Party loyalists can revert to party un-loyalists if the price is right. So who cares about party loyalty when it comes with a price and loyalty can be bought and sold? I would look at those who have proven themselves as champions of the people rather than champions of the party -- the party that pays them the most money.

Is there any surprise if these 'loyal dogs' are abandoning the ship for a price?! I'm not surprised. Actually, money is not the cause of the problem but the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

Anwar should relinquish opposition leader's post: Rais

Subject: Anwar should relinquish opposition leader's post: Rais
(Bernama) -- Information Communication and
Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim supports a call that Datuk
Seri Anwar Ibrahim should relinquish the Opposition leader's post as
he is facing a sodomy trial.

Rais said there were precedence as cabinet ministers and senior civil
servants resigned when they were charged in court.

"From the rule of law and basic rights considerations, whether one is
a member of parliament, a cabinet minister and a civil servant, one
should resign.

"A suggestion that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should do likewise not
only fulfil the legal consideration but also the principles behind his
struggle as he had been advocating social justice and a civil
society," Rais told reporters after launching the "TMpoint on Wheels",
a Telekom Malaysia mobile counter, here today.

He was commenting on views expressed by a lecturer in Utusan Malaysia
that Anwar should relinquish the Opposition leader's post, which could
be filled by either PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang or DAP
adviser Lim Kit Siang as the Parti Keadilan Rakyat de-facto leader
would be bogged down by court proceedings.

"I agree with the views. Now that he (Anwar) is in a quandary, I
believe he should think and find a way out to diffuse the situation
and resign. But it is not easy and it is up to him," said Rais

Keputusan Tee Beng Keluar Parti Eratkan Kerjasama Pakatan Rakyat

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 06:04 AM PST

-SK

Two tests not carried out suggested cover-up in Teoh's death

'Teoh could have been strangled, choked before death'

By WANI MUTHIAH

SHAH ALAM: Government pathologist Dr Shahidan Md Noor admitted that political aide Teoh Beng Hock could have been strangled or chocked prior to his death.

However, Dr Shahidan reiterated that, in his opinion, Teoh's death was due to fall from height and not from strangulation.

Teoh's family counsel Gobind Singh Deo also asked Dr Shahidan if there was a possibility that Teoh had been strangled at the MACC office.

"I didn't say strangled to death, I said strangled," said Gobind.

He then suggested that Teoh was tortured before falling to his death.

"Its possible but not probable," said Dr Shahidan.

To a question by Gobind if he would consider the possibility that Teoh had been unconscious and was thrown down, Dr Shahidan said:

"Yes."

When being questioned by counsel appointed by the Selangor government Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, Dr Shahidan said he also noticed a hematoma (a bruise resulting from internal bleeding), which suggested that force might have been applied to the neck.

He also told Malik Imtiaz there were signs of oxygen deprivation to the brain and such a condition could have led to fainting or collapsing.

Dr Shahidan also conceded there might be flaws in the first post-mortem conducted on political aide Teoh's remains.

Pathologists Dr Khairul Azman Ibrahim and Dr Prashant Samberkar conducted the initial post-mortem on July 17 last year.

Teoh, 30, the political secretary to Selangor executive council member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead the morning after he was taken to the state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in Plaza Masalam here for questioning on July 15 last year over alleged irregularity in disbursement of funds.

Dr Shahidan's testimony Monday contradicts what he told coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas during cross-examination on Feb 19.

He had said the post-mortem report by Dr Khairul Azman and Dr Prashant was very good and there were clear signs indicating Teoh had not been manually strangled.

Dr Shahidan, who is Sungai Buloh Hospital Pathology Unit head, agreed to a suggestion by Gobind that the post-mortem might not have been done prudently and competently.

This was because Teoh's neck had not been examined for possible strangulation.

Internal examination on certain muscled parts of the body to investigate if Teoh had been beaten had also not been carried out.

When questioned by Gobind on what he would have looked out for in custodial deaths, Dr Shahidan said he would have looked for signs of strangulation and beatings.

Gobind: In cases where one looks for signs of beatings, you agree with me that quite often there are signs that are not apparent from a visual look at the body itself?

Dr Shahidan: Yes, there are incidences where one cannot see external injuries.

Gobind: How to find signs of beatings when cannot be seen visually?

Dr Shahidan said dissections would be done on the muscles on the head, back, chest, abdomen, feet and limbs as well as other muscled areas to determine if the victim had been flogged.

Gobind then pointed out that the dissections in these areas were only done during the second post-mortem conducted by Dr Shahidan and not done at all during the initial post-mortem.

Gobind: So in your opinion, as head of department, when examining a case in which there's a possibility of custodial death, it would be prudent to look for injuries such as pressure marks on the neck and internal injuries to the body?

Dr Shahidan: Yes.

Dr Shahidan also agreed with Gobind that checking for strangulation marks and conducting an internal examination, to determine if the victim had been beaten, was the usual protocol adhered to in cases of custodial death.

He also admitted to finding superficial bruises in the neck region, which was not mentioned, in the first post-mortem report.

Gobind then said if it had not been for Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand, the marks on Teoh's neck would not have been known.

"How is it that our doctors didn't pick it up but Dr Pornthip did from the picture?" asked Gobind.

However, Dr Shahidan vehemently defended the initial post-mortem report and openly declared in court that he would not say anything harsh against it.

"The superficial injuries to the neck may have only been evident after 24 hours, that's why they couldnt see the marks," he said.

Gobind also said it was strange that the two most crucial tests had not been carried out given that Teoh had died while in custody.

He asked Dr Shahidan if that suggested a cover-up if these two crucial tests had not been carried out at a post-mortem involving a custodial death.

"Yes," said Dr Shahidan.

Azmil Muntapha adjourned Dr Shahidan's cross-examination to March 10.

Dr Pornthip had on Oct 21 last year told the inquest that Teoh's death was 80% homicide and several injuries found on him appeared to be pre-fall injuries.

First Day of Tiger Chinese New Year

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 04:51 AM PST

This year's Chinese New Year fell on the date same as the Valentine's Day. Still remember last year that I went to Chin Ping's place to BBQ and celebrate the day together, this year is different already, I am single, no Valentine, and the whole day was with my brother, my mother, my father and everyone at home. Also it's also the day people came to visit and received a lot of ang bao. Very fun.

IMG_3872 by nicholaschan.
Looking at the Star Map on my phone early in the morning. So bright, where got star?

I then only realized that I took not many photos on that day, perhaps that I was busy collecting money in ang bao (red packet) and eating Chinese New Year's tidbits. Yummy.

IMG_3876 by nicholaschan.

IMG_3878 by nicholaschan.

This year was a little bit different, brother and I woke up pretty late in the morning, it's almost noon. Freshen up, wishes my dear daddy and mommy and I received ang bao from them. Then same like every year, we will go to grandma place for brunch and gong hei fatt choi to everyone. What's different was that we stopped there, didn't go visit relative's place already where the Chinese calls this kind of visit during CNY as bai nian.

IMG_3883 by nicholaschan.

Instead, relatives came over to grandma place and they talked and gave me ang bao. ^^

IMG_3885 by nicholaschan.

For me, there's nothing much to do except saying GONG HEI FATT CHOI, eating and drinking.

IMG_3888 by nicholaschan. IMG_3889 by nicholaschan.

Stayed there till late afternoon then we went back home to sleep. And at night, no idea where to eat and we ordered pizza and grandma and cousins of mommy's side came over to my place to eat PIZZA. =D So weird. No cinema for us because it's damn fully booked and sold out. OMG.

Teoh Mungkin Dicekik, Hampir Mengesahkan Penemuan Dr Pornthip

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 04:52 AM PST

Inkues TBH: Beng Hock Mungkin Dicekik

SHAH ALAM, 1 MAC - Adakah Teoh Beng Hock dicampak atau terjun sendiri?

Jawapan Ketua Bahagian Patologi Hospital Sungai Buloh, Dr Shahidan Mohd Noor ketika disoal balas Malik Imtiaz Sarwar perbicaraan pada Inkues Menyiasat Kematian Teoh Beng Hock, hampir mengesahkan teori Dr Prontip.

-TVS

Holy Communion not to be taken irreverently by Edwin John, Mar 1, 10

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 04:42 AM PST

I refer to the Malaysiakini report No action against Al-Islam, say AG's Chambers

The two journalists from the Al-Islam magazine who were sent undercover to a church to participate and desecrate the Holy Communion have got off scot-free.

Police say charges have been dropped. The Attorney-General's Chambers has given them the thumbs up.

All right-thinking Malaysians will be taken aback by this development. But rest assured, Christians will not take to the streets in protest.

I shudder to think of the consequences if a non-Muslim were to enter a mosque under false pretences and participate in the worship. And later, write an article mocking the practices of the Muslims.

Forget about police reports and demonstrations and burning effigies. That would be nothing. There would be bigger worries, like whether you will get through the night alive.Detention under ISA would be a most welcome respite'for your own protection'.

So the authorities have decided that there will be 'no further action'. Or have they left it to God to do what He thinks is appropriate? What is this Holy Communion that Christians have practiced for 2000 years? Is it something trivial?

The purpose of the bread and the cup of the Holy Communion is as a remembrance of Jesus Christ and as a proclamation of His death and His imminent return. And what does the Bible say about those who take the Holy Communion irreverently?

'Whoever eats the bread and drinks the cup in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of Jesus.'

Not only that, the Bible also goes on to say that, 'you're running the risk of serious consequences' including being 'weak and sick' and the ominous warning of 'an early grave'. Malaysiakini Double standards and the rule of law by UMNO!!!

The Message from Netanyahu

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 04:23 AM PST

The reason you see no strategy in the Dubai assassination is that you have bought into the MSM coverage, which portrayed it as a poorly handled goof that left the Mossad wide open. Many commentators said the assassination was beneath the Mossad - as if the Mossad had somehow forgotten their expertise and flubbed up.Do you seriously believe this is the case? Where you see no strategy, I see grand strategy. Think about what the Israelis have done.

They have waltzed into Dubai, allowed themselves to be videotaped every which way -- including while putting on costumes and wigs -- killed a man, and waltzed right back out. They did it in plain sight. And they did it using British passports.

What does this say to Hamas, and Arab nation onlookers? It says that wherever you are, whatever you are doing, however many video cameras you may have watching you, we will find you, and we will kill you. And you will know who we are, and yet you will never find us. And MOST importantly: we are going to do it in as brazen a manner as possible.

We are even going to swipe the passports of some innocent British citizens, daring the West to criticize us. But we don't care. We are going to kill you in such a manner that you will immediately be able to track us down - but we'll already be gone. The Israelis didn't use fake passports not because they didn't have the technical expertise or the brains, but because they wanted to pull off their assassination in the most brazen, flagrant manner possible, while still allowing themselves to get away with it.

And just because the British and American pundits didn't pick up on this, doesn't mean Hamas didn't get the point.

And surely any message to Hamas is really also a message to Iran. Is Netanyahu willing and able to launch a new war that will engulf the West over the wishes of the US president? I think he's telling us the answer to that question. The Atlantic

Bekas Setiausaha Agong PKR Broker Pemimpin PKR Keluar Parti?

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 04:20 AM PST

-MI

Must be a humiliating experience for someone who portrays himself as a fearless Allah follower.

(Ynet) [Israel's industry, trade and labor minister] Ben-Eliezer was careful not to tie Israel to the hit: "I won't get into arguments of whether it was intelligence agents or not. Why get into that? After all, the important thing is to see what remains in their memory, and the result was immediately translated, since Nasrallah wore a wig when he travelled to Damascus, meaning he understands that he is being watched, and this is what matters."

But wait there is more:

(Ya Libnan) Israeli intelligence agencies announced that they have real time ( or slightly delayed ) intelligence information on the recent visit of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah to Damascus where he met with the Iranian and Syrian presidents .Israeli newspaper "Yediot Aharonot" quoted an Israeli security official as saying " Israel had more than one opportunity to seize , but chosen not to."According to Israeli intelligence, Nasrallah visits Syria at the rate of three times a year. What really irritates me on this is the long delay to get weapons release. They could have taken all of them without the politically correct delay.
