ZulKulim Dan Zahrain Ikut Najib Ke Washington Untuk Cerita Pasal Spender Anwar?

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 08:53 AM PDT

Zulkifli pula mendedahkan isu berkaitan pembunuhan wanita Mongolia.

Spender Anwar pun Najib kata dia dah tahu... heheh..

Aiseh Najib... Aiseh Zulkulim .. Aiseh Zahrain

Very low quality with very-very low mentality politicians we have in Malaysia...

Hisham: Security concerns not the reason Dr Pornthip didn't appear at inquest

By SHAUN HO

KUALA LUMPUR: Security concerns were not the reason why Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand did not appear at the Teoh Beng Hock inquest, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
"I have guaranteed her safety and have not set any conditions but she has not told us who is pressuring her," Hishammuddin told reporters at a conference at Putra World Trade Centre here Tuesday.
He said if Dr. Pornthip provided police with information on who was pressuring her not to testify, it would make their job of protecting her easier.
"I can prepare a police escort to pick her up from the airport and send her to court. I can also make sure the Special Operations Unit (UTK) is stationed in her room and I will make sure she goes back to Thailand safely," Hishammuddin added.
Earlier, he opened the International Conference on Defence and Security 2010 at the Defence Services Asia 2010 exhibition held at PWTC.

Entering Malaysia is already a life-threatening move for Pornthip but to be protected by UTK? SEI LOH

Malaysia's Submarine Scandal Surfaces in France

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 07:38 AM PDT

Murky arms deal linked to international pattern of kickbacks

A potentially explosive scandal in Malaysia over the billion-dollar purchase of French submarines, a deal engineered by then-Defense Minister Najib Tun Razak, has broken out of the domestic arena with the filing of a request to investigate bribery and kickbacks from the deal in a Paris court.

Although the case has been contained for eight years in the cozy confines of Malaysia's courts and parliament, which are dominated by the ruling National Coalition, French lawyers William Bourdon, Renaud Semerdjian and Joseph Breham put an end to that when they filed it with Parisian prosecutors on behalf of the Malaysian human rights organization Suaram, which supports good-government causes.

Judges in the Paris Prosecution Office have been probing a wide range of corruption charges involving similar submarine sales and the possibility of bribery and kickbacks to top officials in France, Pakistan and other countries. The Malaysian piece of the puzzle was added in two filings, on Dec. 4, 2009 and Feb. 23 this year.

For two years, Parisian prosecutors, led by investigating judges Francoise Besset and Jean-Christophe Hullin, have been gingerly investigating allegations involving senior French political figures and the sales of submarines and other weaponry to governments all over the world. French news reports have said the prosecutors have backed away from some of the most serious charges out of concern for the political fallout.

The allegations relate to one of France's biggest defense conglomerates, the state-owned shipbuilder DCN, which merged with the French electronics company Thales in 2005 to become a dominant force in the European defense industry. DCN's subsidiary Armaris is the manufacturer of Scorpene-class diesel submarines sold to India, Pakistan and Malaysia among other countries. All of the contracts, according to the lawyers acting for Suaram, a Malaysian human rights NGO, are said to be suspect.

With Najib having moved on from the defense portfolio he held when the deal was put together in 2002 to become prime minister and head of the country's largest political party, the mess has the potential to become a major liability for the government and the United Malays National Organisation. Given the power of UMNO, it is unlikely the scandal would ever get any airing in a Malaysian court, which is presumably why Suaram reached out to French prosecutors.

"The filings are very recent and have so far prompted a preliminary police inquiry on the financial aspects of the deal," said a Paris-based source familiar with France's defense establishment. "There isn't a formal investigation yet. The investigation will most likely use documents seized at DCN in the course of another investigation, focusing on bribes paid by DCN in Pakistan.

The source said police have confined their inquiry to bribery allegations so far and have not looked into the 2006 murder of a Mongolian woman in Malaysia who was a translator on the deal for Najib and his friend, Abdul Razak Baginda, during a visit to Paris.

There have been numerous deaths involving DCN defense sales in Taiwan and Pakistan. Prosecutors are suspicious that 11 French submarine engineers who were murdered in a 2002 bomb blast in Karachi – first thought to have been the work of Al Qaeda – were actually killed in retaliation for the fact that the French had reneged on millions of dollars in kickbacks to Pakistani military officers.

The Malaysian allegations revolve around the payment of €114 million to a Malaysia-based company called Perimekar, for support services surrounding the sale of the submarines. Perimekar was wholly owned by another company, KS Ombak Laut Sdn Bhd, which in turn was controlled by Najib's best friend, Razak Baginda, whose wife Mazalinda, a lawyer and former magistrate, was the principal shareholder, according to the French lawyers.

"Over the past years, serious cases have been investigated in France by judges involving DCN," lawyer Renaud Semerdjian told Asia Sentinel in a telephone interview. "This is not the first case of this kind that is being investigated. There are others in Pakistan and there are some issues about India. To a certain extent, every time weapons of any kind have been provided, suspicion of violation of the law may be very high.

As defense minister from 2000 to 2008, Najib commissioned a huge military buildup to upgrade Malaysia's armed forces, including two submarines from Armaris and the lease of a third, a retired French Navy Agosta-class boat. There were also Sukhoi supersonic fighter jets from Russia and millions of dollars spent on coastal patrol boats. All have come under suspicion by opposition leaders in Malaysia's parliament but UMNO has stifled any investigation. Asked personally about the cases, Najib has responded angrily and refused to reply.

Despite efforts to bury it, the case achieved considerably notoriety after the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu, a 28-year-old Mongolian translator and Razak Baginda's jilted lover, who participated in negotiations over the purchase of the submarines. By her own admission in a letter found after her death, she was attempting to blackmail Razak Baginda for US$500,000.

She was shot in October 2006 and her body was blown up with military explosives by two bodyguards attached to Najib's office after Razak Baginda went to Najib's chief of staff, Musa Safri, for help in keeping her away from him. Not long after being acquitted in November 2008 under questionable circumstances of participating in her murder, Razak Baginda left the country for England. The bodyguards were convicted but no motive was ever established for their actions despite a confession by one which was not allowed in court, but which said they would be paid a large sum of money to get rid of her.

The submarine deal was never brought up in court during a months-long murder trial that was marked by prosecutors, defense attorneys and the judge working studiously to keep Najib's name out of the proceedings. A private detective hired by Razak Baginda to protect him from the furious Altantuya filed a statutory declaration after the trial indicating that Najib had actually been the victim's lover and had passed her on to Razak Baginda.

The detective, P. Balasubramaniam, said later that he was unceremoniously run out of Kuala Lumpur. He eventually emerged from hiding in India to say he had been offered RM5 million (US$1.57 million) by a businessman close to Najib's wife to shut up and get out of town. He also said he had met Nazim Razak, Najib's younger brother, and was told to recant his testimony.

In the current complaint in Paris, the issue revolves around what, if anything, Razak Baginda's Perimekar company did to deserve €114 million. Zainal Abidin, the deputy defense minister at the time of the sale, told parliament that Perimekar had received the amount – 11 percent of the sale price of the submarines – for "coordination and support services." The Paris filing alleges that there were neither support nor services.

Perimekar was registered in 2001, a few months before the signing of the contracts for the sale, the Paris complaint states. The company, it said flatly, "did not have the financial resources to complete the contract." A review of the accounts in 2001 and 2002, the complaint said, "makes it an obvious fact that this corporation had absolutely no capacity, or legal means or financial ability and/or expertise to support such a contract."

"None of the directors and shareholders of Perimekar have the slightest experience in the construction, maintenance or submarine logistics," the complaint adds. "Under the terms of the contract, €114 million were related to the different stages of construction of the submarines." The apparent consideration, supposedly on the part of Perimekar, "would be per diem and Malaysian crews and accommodation costs during their training. There is therefore no link between billing steps and stages of completion of the consideration.

"As Asia Sentinel reported on April 1, services for the subs are being performed by a well-connected firm called Boustead DCNS, a joint venture between BHIC Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of publicly-listed Boustead Heavy Industries Corp Bhd, and DCNS SA, a subsidiary of DCN. Boustead's Heavy Industries Division now includes Perimekar as an "associate of the Group. PSB is involved in the marketing, upgrading, maintenance and related services for the Malaysian maritime defence industry," according to Boustead's annual report.

Originally Boustead told the Malaysian Stock Exchange that the service contract was for RM600 million (US$184.1 million) for six years, or US$30.68 million annually. However, the contract later ballooned to RM270 million per year. Boustead Holdings is partly owned by the government and has close connections with UMNO.

"There are good grounds to believe that [Perimekar] was created with a single objective: arrange payment of the commission and allocate the amount between different beneficiaries including Malaysian public officials and or Malaysian or foreign intermediaries," the complaint states

Hishamuddin Tak Ingat Atau Buat-buat Tak Ingat?

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 06:18 AM PDT

(I don't remember.)

Hishammuddin menambah, "Itu realiti politik.

P.212 Sibu By-Election - Part 4

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 05:40 AM PDT

DAP Sarawak still keeps it high up the sleeve as to who is going to be fielded for P212 Sibu By-Election.

It is getting a little bit tricky here. Is DAP just playing a nerve-racking game or is it still tossing up? The political watchers' stretched necks are getting a bit strained.

Initially, YB Wong Ho Leng, David Wong and Alice Lau were hotly tipped off. But it appears that the dust is just not quite settled yet. Some brewing may still be going on.

Alice Lau is a greenhorn. If she is picked, then there might be internal buzzing that she is by-passing or even jumping the queue.

YB Wong Ho Leng is very much an old hand. In the forthcoming by-election, he stands taller than the other DAP's hopefuls in terms of winning. But Ho Leng is already an ADUN. If he takes up P212 again, he might instigate squabble, saying he is "going to buffet counter with two plates".

David Wong is a DAP loyalist. For the past 15 years, he has been labouring away for the party. Some say he deserves to be given the armor to stand for the party in the coming by-election. Further more, David Wong has been quite well received by Sibuians. I came to know David when he was the branch manager of a finance company. He used to send his guests to Premier Hotel.

The delay in naming DAP's candidate manifests that some kind of bickering may be going on over the choice.

Korean man married anime pillow

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 05:16 AM PDT

In 2008, a Japanese otaku made headlines with his online petition pleading to legalise marriage with a two-dimensional (i.e. anime and comics) character. A Korean guy has taken a further step in 2010 with a special 'wedding' in March…

Korean guy married Dakimakura pillow

28-year-old Mr Lee got 'married' with his dakimakura – a body pillow from Japan often with a picture of an anime-like character printed on the side – in a special ceremony. In Lee's case, his bride is a pillow with an image of Fate Testarossa from anime series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. [via Metro]

I bet the bride didn't consent the marriage. She couldn't say "I Do."

Another Reprieve?

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 04:58 AM PDT

They may be mere digits on the monitor but they tell a lot. They determine my life's direction, whether I take the right fork or the left. One will be a journey longer than the other. Where one prolongs, the other hastens. Inexplicably, both will lead to the same conclusion at some point in time. There is no escaping.

I wonder how I will choose when the time comes. I am glad I do not have to make that choice yet, or so I thought. The 3 digits that mattered most were 294, 294 umol/L creatinine that is, from the blood sample taken in December 16, 2009 as compared to the previous serum creatinine count of 299 umol/L, according to the attending doctor this morning. The KUB (Kidneys-Ureter-Bladder) ultrasound done in February 11, 2010, as expected, showed little change from the previous report as was confirmed by the radiologist when I asked her, which is a good thing.

As I went through the entry on my renal profile and KUB posted on June 2, 2009, I discovered suspiciously similar results, 294 umol/L for the latest results as compared to 299 umol/L for the previous. Surely, there is a mistake somewhere. The blood test results before the sample taken in December 16, 2009 should show 294 umol/L and not 299 umol/L.

Thinking back, I guess I have an idea of what happened. The blood sample taken in December 16, 2009 must have been misplaced somewhere along the chain of process. It was not extracted at the laboratory as is the usual procedure but at the rehabilitation clinic. Therefore, what I thought was the result for the December 2009 sample was in actual fact from May 2009. There is no result from December 2009.

I assumed. I was mistaken. I guess the doctor who attended to me this morning did not know a test was ordered to be done in December 2009 by another doctor. Somebody messed up my blood test but I am not going to pursue this. Anyway, the doctor has ordered a renal function, liver function, lipid profile and blood glucose be done before my next appointment in August. Till then, there is no reprieve for me yet.

Khairy Kelam Kabut Diaju Kisah Gambarnya Dengan Botol Arak Dan Betina Seksi

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 04:57 AM PDT

Cukupla. Saya saya jawap ia akan berlarutan.

Adakah anda menyalahkan media?

Anda cuba memaksa saya berkata-kata demikian. Saya tidak kata saya menyalahkan media. Anda cuba membuat saya berkata-kata demikian.

Wartawan: YB, Saya berharap anda tak keberatan menjawap soalan...

Khairy: Saya mesti pergi, saya mesti pergi.

Siapa? Saya mesti pergi...Huh? Apa yang perlu diserang?

Boleh komen mengenainya?

Apa yang perlu diserang?

Mereka menggunakan foto yang kontroversial...

Foto kontroversial apa itu?

...menunjukkan seorang lelaki sedang minum...

-mk

SPR Dikecam Kerana Pekakkan Telinga Pindahkan Pengundi

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 03:06 AM PDT

-SK

Malaysian Insider : Gene makes people fat, raises Alzheimer’s risk

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 02:01 AM PDT

Gene makes people fat, raises Alzheimer's risk

CHICAGO, April 20 — A variant of an obesity gene carried by more than a third of the US population also reduces brain volume, raising carriers' risk of Alzheimer's disease, US researchers said yesterday.

People with a specific variant of the fat mass and obesity gene, or FTO gene, have brain deficits that could make them more vulnerable to the mind-robbing disease.

"The basic result is that this very prevalent gene not only adds an inch to your waistline, but makes your brain look 16 years older," said Paul Thompson, a professor of neurology at the University of California Los Angeles, who worked on the study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Brains generally shrink with age.

The study compared brain scans of more than 200 people and found consistently less tissue in the brains of people who carry the "bad" version of the FTO gene compared to non-carriers.

On average, people with the obesity variant of the FTO gene had 8 per cent less tissue in their frontal lobes — sometimes referred to as the brain's "command centre." They also had 12 per cent less tissue in their occipital lobes, which is the part of the brain that processes vision and other perceptions.

Thompson said reduced brain volume raises a person's risk for Alzheimer's disease by reducing the amount of brain reserve a person has to compensate if the brain plaques linked to Alzheimer's form. Stroke can also reduce brain tissue, depleting the brain's reserve.

The added brain risk means it is more important for people who carry the FTO gene to eat a low-fat diet and exercise regularly, he said.

A 2008 study of Amish people who had the FTO risk gene but were physically active found they weighed about the same as non-carriers, suggesting that physical activity can overcome a genetic predisposition to obesity.

People with two copies of the FTO gene variant on average weigh nearly 3kg more and are about 70 per cent more likely to be obese than those who do not have the gene.

"In all the maelstrom of activities you do, exercise and a low-fat diet are genuinely saving your brain from both stroke and Alzheimer's," Thompson said.

For the study, Thompson's team compared magnetic resonance images taken of the brains of 206 healthy people between age 55 and 90 at 58 centres. The centres were taking part in the five-year Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, which is examining the factors that help ageing brains resist disease.

Because so many people carry the obesity version of the FTO gene, Thompson said the findings may drive research into new drug compounds to alter the effects on the brain.

Short of that, he said the findings should lead carriers to eat less and exercise more.

There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia affecting 26 million people globally.

Current treatments help with some symptoms, but cannot reverse the course of the disease, leading many scientific teams to look for ways to prevent it.

LEBIH KURANG

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 01:25 AM PDT

IN POLITICS, it is not always easy to say Yes or No. Thus, some say, ok ok, others prefer, may be may be, different people will say, yes and no, or simply, keep quiet with either a smile or frown or blank face expression. Lebih kurang are very safe words. And the phrase can means many things. Lebih kurang like that lah....

NAJIB WANTS PRECISION

TOKYO, April 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wants the Malaysian society to discard the "lebih kurang" attitude and try to emulate the Japanese and be a precision society in order to propel Malaysia to become a developed nation.

In his acceptance speech after being conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the Meiji University here today, Najib said, when he was asked what he thought was the most important quality of the Japanese society, the word "precision" came to his mind.

"The Japanese are a highly precise society," he said, stressing that being precise was crucial to the advancement of science and technology and an important enduring value.

Citing the arrangement for his programmes here as an example, he said, "Everything is perfect, which is why I like Malaysians to also become a precision society."

He pointed out an expression in Bahasa Malaysia "lebih kurang" which he said was "not synonymous with our desire to become a precision society."

"It cannot be 'lebih kurang' (decidedly vague), we must be precise," he said. — Bernama

A day at the clinic

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 02:30 AM PDT

I was on clinic duty again today. Anticipating the difficulty of finding a parking space, and in view of the fact that my car was due for servicing, I decided to send my car to the service center, and then walk an extra few hundred meters to the hospital. With a volleyball game coming up on Saturday next week and the charity run the week after, I figured I'd need the extra exercise as well. As a matter of fact, last week when I went to visit Ijam at the ward, I actually used the stairs all the way up to the 6th floor. (Oh, I didn't really use the stairs for the exercise, but only 2 lifts were working and there were soooo many people waiting!) I doubt any kilos were shed though… :)

Anyway, there weren't many new cases referred to us today. There was only one new case, that of a 55 year old single man. A positive thinking man, but either totally unaware of how HIV spreads, or simply in denial of how he got infected. He claimed he must have got HIV through dusts… oh dear…

Before that one lady, Helena, a long lost client, came into the room. My colleague who was assigned as her buddy, had been trying to get hold of her, but other than calls that didn't get through, visits to her house showed that she no longer lived there. We then lost touch with her. Before this, even when we were in touch with her, it was so difficult to get her to go for her hospital appointments. She didn't even bring her children for tests, not even the youngest one, who was still a baby. Now the youngest is already 4. I was rather surprised when she told me today that while her 3 younger children were tested negative, her eldest daughter, 9, was the one infected. And the girl had not started medication yet because it was only recently that she started coming back for her appointments. I reminded her not to miss any more appointments. If she doesn't care about herself, at least give her daughter the chance to access proper treatment!

Later, while I was chatting with my fellow volunteers, a familiar cute looking guy walked in with SN. Guess who? Remember D, the maknyah whom I visited at a district hospital last year? Yep, it was him! In full men's (uh, boy's?) attire. And he looked a whole lot better, definitely much better than when I saw him at the district hospital. And of course, he didn't seem as schizophrenic as he seemed back then. He was even able to come alone, without his mother accompanying. I asked if he remembered me and he did. I asked how he was and it was SN who jokingly answered, "Kalau dia tak sihat, tarik je telinga dia!" I then reminded him to make sure not to miss any appointments, and immediately SN said, "Tapi engkau jangan datang pakai skirt pulak tau. Akak lari nanti!"

I was truly happy to see his condition improve by leaps and bounds. Alhamdulillah.

After a while SN came in again, this time with a nurse from the unit where blood tests are done. They asked if I had Sharifah's number because the number in SN's record is the old number. In case you have forgotten, Sharifah is Cek Mek's mother. Sharifah had gone for her blood test earlier, but had left her appointment letter there. They figured Sharifah wouldn't have gone too far yet, so they asked me to call her and get the letter. I tried calling a few times but my calls were not answered. Then I tried calling Kak Ana, because usually if Sharifah comes over for her appointment, she'd stay over at Kak Ana's place so she could be with her baby as well. Even Kak Ana didn't answer my call. Finally I just decided to send a text message to Kak Ana. Within minutes, Sharifah called back. They were still within the hospital compounds. At the cafeteria to be exact. So I told her to go back to get the letter.

There were no more cases referred to us after that, but SN did want to see me to discuss the possibility of sending volunteers to the Taiping HIV clinic. Dr Ker, the specialist in charge, goes there every 4th Tuesday of each month and to Teluk Intan every 2nd Tuesday. She could see the support from Buddies in Ipoh GH, and from Pusat Komuniti Intan in Teluk Intan, but there is no support group in Taiping hospital. Dr Ker mentioned that there is an organisation willing to chip in financially for that purpose, but they still need people to run the support service. I told Dr Ker I may discuss the matter further in our next board meeting. Maybe what we can do initially is to take turns to go there (it's only once a month anyway) and at the same time rope in volunteers from that area. After a while, after they are already well trained, we can leave the Taiping HIV clinic to the Taiping volunteers! Well, let's see how it goes…

We also discussed about Zali. Remember Zali, the guy whose wife purportedly left him and the kids? As I mentioned here, although at first we believed his story, later on due to inconsistencies in his stories, we figured it wasn't that the wife didn't want to take the kids, it's just him not wanting the kids to go to the wife, despite the fact that his wife would be more capable to take care of the kids. Dr Ker asked if we could source out some help for him, and especially the kids. I told her we'd like to see and speak to the wife, but Zali always came up with all sorts of excuses not to let us speak to the wife. Just like the rest of us, Dr Ker's main concern is the well-being of the children. In her own words, "He is going to be very sick soon. He is not compliant in his medication and given his situation, it is hard for me to start him on a new regime. It's just a matter of time before he gets hospitalised. Who is going to take care of the children?"

Good question doc. But while we are thinking about the children's well-being, Zali himself seemed to be rather selfish and thinking of his own needs more than that of his children's. If he loves his children, then he'd better start thinking of their future.

After the short discussion (had to make it a short one as Dr Ker was busy with the patients), off I went. Walking at a fast pace (to get my car at the service center), before long somebody honked. I looked around and suddenly heard a familiar voice, "Amboi!! Lajunya jalan dah tak pandang kiri-kanan dah!" It was Kak Ana, about to drive off. In the car was Sharifah… and yes, my little Cek Mek!! Ooh, I love seeing them together. I always wonder when they are really getting back together. I mean for Sharifah to take the little darling into her full care instead of the current practice of visiting from time to time. Well, it was just a short meet, too short to get updates, but ample time for me to cubit-cubit the little girl's cheeks. (nasiblah siapa jadi cucu angkat I...)

So yeah, it was a good day. It wasn't so tiring after all having to walk the few extra hundred meters. The only downside was the few extra hundred ringgits for the replacements of some parts to my car… (will be driving down to Seremban next Saturday anyway, so better make sure the car is in good condition, right?)

Poster G.Palanivel Turut Dipasang?

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 11:38 PM PDT

-erapakatan

Asam jawa kepala biawak

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 11:32 PM PDT
