Amaran SPR hanya ditertawakan

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 09:13 AM PDT

— Harakah Daily

Someone leaked Polis Diraja-Israel link WAYYYYYYYY before Anwar did

The Malay Main reported 'Ex-journalist discovered Israeli link in Bukit Aman 2 years ago'. This guy also slammed Anwar for leaking the story for political mileage.

The fact that a source told him about a serious security breach in the Royal Malaysian Police by Israeli agents two years ago proves that the leak was small but it was bad enough. Then, he went to lodge a police report. It made the leak even worse! Kudos to this ex-journo!

Malaysiakini: M'sian talent in high demand overseas

special report The New Economic Model report's emphasis on attracting talent home is most timely – there is a global war for skills, and Malaysian professionals are happy to go where the grass is greener.

According to a 2008 Towers Perrin survey, Malaysian workers are very flexible and willing to change jobs in the face of attractive offers, even if it means moving abroad.

foong wai fongHappily for Malaysians professionals, said trend analyst Foong Wai Fong (left), international demand is strong.

Language capabilities figure high on the list of reasons why global employers favour Malaysians, with other attributes like resilience and reliability also cited, she said.

Inti Education Group President Tan Yew Sing added that Malaysians are also valued for having a wider worldview.

"Malaysian workers tend to be more approachable and don't give the impression that they are only sordid merchants," he added.

Signaling adaptability, the Australian Parliament Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade 2007 report noted that "Malaysian born people are one of the best groups in Australia for integrating into the community".

Australia has indeed been one of the top destinations of choice for Malaysian emigrants, with 5396 permanent residency visas awarded to Malaysians in the past two years.

australia media visit 290107 sydney opera houseTopping the list of Malaysian emigrants to Australia are pharmacists, accountants and doctors-the type of talent pivotal to realise Malaysia's high income dreams.

Next door in New Zealand, two-thirds of Malaysians awarded permanent residency visas last year were skilled workers.

Western countries have been the traditional favourites of Malaysian emigrants.

The United States 2000 Census noted 45,459 Malaysian-born residents, the figure in the United Kingdom in 2001 was comparable at 49, 886 people.

But an Asian Migrant Centre study as far back as 1995 approximated 250,000 Malaysians working in Japan and Taiwan, proving that East Asian economies are also in the mix.

Overseas studies a path to migration

In neighbouring Singapore, most of non-Singapore born residents come from Malaysia, with pull factors including Singapore's world class universities.

National University Singapore is ranked 10th in the QS Asian University Rankings 2009, far surpassing Malaysia's best university, Universiti Malaya, which ranked 39th.

The international student path of migration has long been popular among Malaysian emigrants.

A study in 1994 found that 43 percent of Malaysian and Singaporean students who furthered their studies in Australia were motivated by future migration.

NONENotable Malaysians who have followed this path include fashion powerhouse Zang Toi (left), the inventor of the single-chip USB pen drive Pua Kian Seng, and former Curtin University chancellor Eric Tan.

But Tan believes that the student migration path does not explain the exodus to East Asian countries like China.

Emigrants to countries like China, he said, are more likely to be young professionals who are taking up the diverse and challenging opportunities that such rapidly developing economies can offer.

Migration path

The student migration path is likely to strengthen with global education players offering easier pathways to permanent residency and citizenship for international graduates.

Mimicking Australia, in 2008 the UK began giving international students immediate access to work permits upon graduation, if employed, paving the way for subsequent high-skilled migration.

A 2008 report by the Association of Pacific Rim Universities also noted that even major US employers are lobbying their Congress for automatic provision permanent residency to all foreign doctoral graduates.

nice viewSingapore is also quick to capitalise on its international students by offering scholarships and ensuring a promising career path to retain its international graduates, said Foong.

"If a graduate who is able to earn RM2500 in Malaysia can earn 3000 SGD in Singapore and have that increased to 5000 SGD after three months of confirmation, why would he want to leave (Singapore)?" she asked.

But easier access to a work permits and visas is hardly the main factor for emigration.

Nor are higher wages, which many, including Malaysian Employers' Federation executive director Shamsuddin Bardan, claim to be the main driver for professional emigration.

Migration agents, researchers, and emigrants, cite a culmination of many reasons, includng dwindling freedom of expression, concern for children's education, increased conservatism and a general lack of faith in institutions like the judiciary and the police force.

Another is a common reason cited even by members of the National Economic Advisory Council (NEAC), which was behind the NEM report.

In an interview with a Malaysian radio station last week, London-based Malaysian-born economist and NEAC member Danny Quah said that he would consider relocating to Malaysia if policies were more equitable.

Such changes could only occur if the NEM proposal to do away with ethnic-based affirmative action does come to fruition.

But with strong resistance already mounted by pressure groups who claim such policy is the right of the bumiputera, Malaysia might need to wait longer still for its talent to return home.

Malaysian Insider: Greece plunges deeper into crisis, banks, euro hit

Malaysian Insider: Greece plunges deeper into crisis, banks, euro hit

ATHENS, April 8 — Markets pounded Greek bonds and banking stocks today, driving the debt-stricken euro zone member's borrowing costs to new highs and pushing it closer to tapping a last resort EU/IMF safety net.

The government struggled to reassure markets it can stay solvent after the premium investors demand to buy Greek rather than the benchmark German government debt surged for the third day in a row to a record high since Greece joined the euro.

But scepticism at a dearth of details surrounding the European Union and International Monetary Fund lifeline continued to pile pressure on a country already struggling to cover its wide fiscal gap and huge public debt load.

Chris Pryce, senior Greece analyst for rating agency Fitch, said Athens' only choice now was to ask for help.

"Despite everything the EU and the euro zone have done there is still a lack of clarity (and) confusion about what they intend to do, when they intend do it and how much would be involved," he told Reuters.

"It is now up to the Greek government to go publicly to the EU and IMF and ask for the cash and the support."

Greece's government has pledged to cut its public finance deficit by almost one-third to 8.7 per cent of gross domestic product this year, but is also wary of sparking public unrest after a string of riots and strikes since last year.

Reluctant to give in to the pressures, Greece insists it prefers to borrow from markets and will use the European Union/International Monetary Fund safety net agreed only as a last resort, a call it repeated today.

"For the time being it is not necessary to activate the aid mechanism. The EU/IMF safety net is there to guarantee that Greece is not alone," said spokesman George Petalotis, adding Athens was striving not to borrow at "barbaric" interest rates.

But the 10-year Greek/German government yield spread spiked almost half a percentage point to as much as 463 basis points today.

Two-year Greek government bond yields surged more than 100 bps to almost 8 per cent.

"Spread levels today are insane, they are not levels for a euro zone country," said Panagiotis Dimitropoulos, treasurer at Millennium Bank in Greece. "It seems Greece is being pushed towards the aid mechanism."

Germany, which can veto Athens' access to the aid package, also held firm on its position that it is only a last ditch option, with a spokesman saying that, despite the jump in borrowing costs, "the government's position remains unchanged".

Dealing with its own financial problems as a local election looms, Berlin has been loath to set a bad example for other euro zone offenders by letting Greece off the hook too lightly.

Greece's woes drove the euro close to its 2009 low against the dollar today. It slipped 0.2 per cent to US$1.3306 at 1227 GMT, just off its 2010 low of US$1.3267.

The next main challenge Greece faces is to borrow 11 billion euros (RM49.5 billion) by the end of May.

Three bonds worth 18 billion euros have performed badly this year in the secondary market, and analysts say a dollar bond planned for April and May would struggle to draw demand at yields seen attractive by the government.

Banks, which have asked to tap 17 billion euros remaining in a crisis support package, saw shares tumble more than 7 per cent.

They are down 50 per cent since worries over how Greece will cut a debt pile that exceeds its annual economic output by a fifth started to rattle investors in mid-October, wiping out about 24 billion euros in market capitalisation.

A banking source who wished not to be named said the country's four largest banks — National Bank of Greece, Eurobank, Alpha Bank, and Piraeus Bank — had asked to access the support package's remaining funds last week.

They have been hit by worsening portfolio performance due to the deterioration of the state bonds which the banks hold and a rise in non-performing loans, and media have reported foreign banks have stopped taking part in interbank activity, squeezing banks' ability to roll over short-term loans.

Another issue is new rules being announced today from the European Central Bank on extending easier lending terms for holders of Greek government bonds into 2011.

The rules will defuse the danger of Greek debt falling off the list of what banks can swap for ECB loans next year if it faces more ratings downgrades.

But they also introduce a sliding risk premium scale, or "haircuts" on bonds that are used widely by Greek banks to tap ECB credit. That could create funding problems for them by effectively cutting the value of assets that do not enjoy the highest ratings. — Reuters

PRK Hulu Selangor: PKR Ada Kelebihan – Khir Toyo

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 06:20 AM PDT

-FMT

Dakwaan DSAI Terbukti Benar, Asiasoft, Agen Yahudi Kini Dihalang Masuk Bukit Aman

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 04:52 AM PDT

Keceluparan Noh Omar Menjerat Diri

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 04:34 AM PDT

-malaysiakini-

Ulasan GB

Habislah BN. Keceluparan Noh Omar akhirnya memakan diri. Minta maaf? huhu senang-senag camtu jer ke.

Mungkin kena tabur fulus kot, tapi untuk sektika, lepas tu pengundi bukan Melayu tetap ingat Noh Omar punya ucapan. Sama jer taraf menteri ni dengan Presiden PERKOSA. Sikapnya rasis, sikapnya menentang aspirasi 1Malaysia.

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 03:17 AM PDT

Tembak Sahaja Anwar Sampai Mati Wahai UMNO

Anwar Mimpi Ngeri Umno-BN

Sebab rakyat pun tahu fungsi fungsi hakim Malaysia seperti satu cerita purbawara 'correct, correct. correct'. Ia telah dijadikan jenaka oleh dunia. Dunia ketawa melihat kita.

Buat pesta ramai ramai. Jemput semua Ahli ahli Kabinet, Ketua Polis Negara dan kroni kroni semua. Tembak sahaja Anwar sampai mati. Tutup cerita.

Ikut formula George Bush di Iraq. Gantung sahaja Saddam Hussein sampai mati.

-sk

Malaysian Insider: Palm oil prices to hit RM3,000 this year

PUCHONG, April 8 — Palm oil prices can possibly touch RM2,800 or RM3,000 per tonne this year due to strong demand coupled with the El-Nino weather phenomenon, IOI Corporation Bhd Executive Chairman Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng says.

He said prices have been falling in the last month due to the strengthening ringgit against the US dollar.

"Palm oil has proven to be one of the best vegetable oils," he told reporters on the sidelines of the official opening of Hong Leong Bank Bandar Puteri Puchong branch.

He expected a drop in IOI Corporation's oil palm output this year because of the effects of El-Nino.

"We see a drop of eight per cent compared to last year," he said.

IOI Corporation's oil palm output for last year, he said, came close to four million tonnes in fresh fruit bunches and a million tonne in crude palm oil. — Bernama

Tajuddin Pasir Salak Cuba Tunjuk Samseng, Patut Disiasat

Kulasegaran Dakwa Tajuddin Ancam Pukul

"Buat apa saya nak ugut dia? Saya sekadar marah beliau kerana membuat kenyataan tak bertanggungjawab.

- BERNAMA

Scary ‘Splice’ trailer creates sci-fi controversy

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 01:01 AM PDT

APRIL 8 — In this trailer recently released for Splice, a sci-fi film that won rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, two scientists defy legal and ethical boundaries with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism.

The footage reveals the disturbing results as the miraculous mistake develops faster than expected, turning from a deformed child-like being to a beautiful and deadly chimera-like creature.

The film stars Adrien Brody (Cadillac Records, the upcoming Predators), and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead) as the fame-seeking DNA-splicing scientists, and Delphine Chaneac as the creature.

The story dramatically addresses ethical issues involving genetics and cloning, offering more than sci-fi horror. Plus a controversial ending and sexual scene has created a buzz.

Director Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Paris je t'aime) is considering a number of new projects, including an adaptation of the kid's fantasy adventureTunnels, the J.G. Ballard novel High Rise and the DC Comic's Swamp Thing.

Splice is scheduled for release in the US June 4. — afprelaxnews.com, Malaysian Insider

Malaysian Insider: Gene found that may predict lung cancer in smokers

Malaysian Insider: Gene found that may predict lung cancer in smokers

WASHINGTON, April 8 —Researchers have identified a group of genes that are especially active in lung cancer patients — even in healthy tissue — and said they may be used to predict which smokers will eventually develop lung cancer.

And, they said, a natural supplement derived from food that is being tested to prevent lung cancer appears to halt the precancerous changes.

"Even in normal cells or premalignant cells prior to cancer development we see this pathway being turned on," said Andrea Bild of the University of Utah, who worked on the study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The main gene is called PI3K and it affects a pathway of other genes, Bild, Avrum Spira of Boston University and colleagues reported. And it can be found in the windpipes of smokers, meaning they do not need more dangerous and uncomfortable lung tests.

"These cells are like a canary in the coal mine," Spira said in a telephone interview. "Even though lung cancer develops deep down in your lungs when you smoke, these cells can tell you whether you are on the way to developing lung cancer. It is sort of a window into the lung."

Cigarette smoke causes 90 per cent of all cases of lung cancer, which kills 1.2 million people a year globally.

But only about 10 per cent of smokers ever develop lung cancer, although they often die of other causes such as heart disease, stroke or emphysema.

Spira and Bild put together results from two ongoing trials of smokers.

"The patients walk in the door and they have something wrong with —we don't know what. Maybe they have lung cancer, maybe they have something else," Bild said in a telephone interview.

Lung cancer is so deadly precisely because it causes vague symptoms. Most patients are not diagnosed until it has spread and can no longer be treated.

The researchers used a brush to collect cells from the windpipes of the smokers. They put these on a gene chip or microarray to see which genes were active in the cells.

"We found this certain pathway, PI3K, was turned on in patients that had lung cancer as opposed to patients that had other problems," Bild said.

PI3K had long been suspected in lung cancer. But another experiment got the researchers more excited.

These were patients with precancerous lesions in their lungs called dysplasia. PI3K was also active in their lesions.

And the second group was taking the natural supplement, myo-inositol, to try to prevent lung cancer. In the patients whose lesions shrank after taking the supplement, PI3K also became less active, the researchers found.

"Together it gives us the story of the importance of this pathway," Bild added. "Whether it is going to save millions of people, who knows?"

Spira said he is working with Boston-based Allegro Diagnostics, which is halfway through a 60-patient clinical trial of the test.

The researchers have patented their findings through the universities but Bild said myo-inositol supplements are cheap and freely available.

Myo-inositol is also found in fruits, beans, grains and nuts, although Bild said the finding does not necessarily explain why people who eat more of these foods have a lower risk of cancer in general. — Reuters

Usul Rujuk DSAI Ke JK Hak Dan Kebebasan Juga Sepatutnya Ditarik Balik

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 11:48 PM PDT

- Bernama

Ulasan GB

Jika usul terhadap mahfuz Omar mengenai UMNO-APCO ditarik balik, Nazri sepatutnya menarik balik usulnya terhadap DSAI. Sememangnya UMNO ada kaitannya dengan APCO. Nak bantah apa lagi?

Nazri: APCO dibayar ikut program komunikasi

— Bernama

WOO HOO! HOLIDAY FOR TWO! Najib takes two independents to the US!

By G. Manimaran
KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — In an unprecedented move, Datuk Seri Najib Razak (picture) is taking two independent MPs to the United States next week, while ordering fellow Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers to stay behind and ensure all government bills are approved in the current parliamentary sitting.
Bayan Baru MP Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim and Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin — both former PKR lawmakers — will be in Washington as part of the Malaysia-United States Caucus to be launched by the prime minister next Wednesday.
Najib is taking no chances after the near-defeat of the Budget 2010 proposals last December in the Dewan Rakyat where BN holds a simple majority of 137 MPs over Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) 78 lawmakers.
"Some of us were initially on the Washington trip but Najib wants us to stay back and come to Parliament everyday," a BN MP told The Malaysian Insider in Parliament last night.
A strong BN bench in Parliament yesterday saw them defeating a surprise PR motion to refer Pasir Salak MP Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman to the Rights and Privileges Committee after he claimed DAP secretary-general and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had sold state secrets to Singapore.
But BN used its superior numbers to refer Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar to the same committee for linking Umno to the government's public relations consultancy APCO — which PR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had linked to a former Israeli regime.
The highly-charged parliamentary sitting has forced BN to ensure that all its MPs, including veterans such as former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz and Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, turn up for crucial votes to approve all government bills and supplementary supply bills.
But Najib will still have two BN MPs — Information Minsiter Datuk Seri Rais Yatim and the country's Malaysian ambassador to the US, Datuk Seri Jamaluddin Jarjis —  with him in his short US trip. Rais is deputising for Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman who is indisposed.
Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar confirmed the short list of MPs joining Najib for the US trip, held just days after the prime minister completed his first year in office.
"We have no further information as we didn't arrange the trip. But I know Datuk Seri Rais will join the two MPs Zulkifli Noordin and Datuk Zahrain," he told The Malaysian Insider, adding Najib will launch the caucus on April 14.
The prime minister is also due to meet US President Barack Obama at the sidelines of a nuclear non-proliferation convention while in Washington.
Zulkifli, who was expelled from PKR last month, told The Malaysian Insider that he will be in the US to attend the launch of the caucus, which was restarted recently after Jamaluddin became the ambassador in Washington.
"I will be in Washington for about a week," Zulkifli said.
But he took great pains to deny his trip was linked to Najib's delegation which includes a number of businessman for investment purposes.
"I am going to Washington, the Prime Minister will be in New York. I am going earlier, it has no connection with the Prime Minister's visit.... no ... no," the maverick politician said.
Zulkifli said he was scheduled to attend the caucus meeting in February with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz but it clashed with another convention in South Korea.
Zahrain and Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong went with Nazri for the earlier trip.
Zulkifli also explained his membership in the caucus was decided by Parliament a while ago and had nothing to do with his former party or his current status as an independent MP.
Zahrain had earlier refused to confirm with The Malaysian Insider that he was going to the US again for the official launch of the caucus. "I don't know, I have no information," he said.
Nazri had said in February that the caucus had been in existence for the past decade but was not active due to lacklustre ties with the US.
"God willing, when the prime minister comes here in April, we can re- launch the Malaysia-US (Congressional) Caucus, which has been in existence for over 10 years. The fact that it has not moved speaks volumes of the state of our relations in the past," he said in February.
Nazri said the caucus would serve as a platform to further strengthen ties between both countries and that through the caucus "we can plan programmes involving US Congress members and Malaysian Members of Parliament."

And are we to believe that the two were not paid? ;)
