Discovering the Best-Hidden Secrets of Penang, and it’s not about Technology

Discovering the Best-Hidden Secrets of Penang, and it’s not about Technology

Posted: 19 May 2010 08:10 PM PDT

Today it's time to take a break from Gadgets and Techno stuff. Instead we have decided to look at Penang, widely acknowledged to be the I.T. capital of Malaysia.

Mention the word Penang… your imagination (and mine) would automatically venture to the beautiful stretch of beaches along Batu Ferringhi.

But once you have driven past the Batu Ferringhi stretch and resisted the temptation of stopping by one of the gorgeous beaches, you would reach the end of it and find yourself at the Penang National Park. This would prove to be the start of a hiking venture that few know about and have experienced, though those who have would most definitely recommend this adventure to others!

Take a short walk up the trail and you would find yourself at an intersection, the left takes you to Kerachut Beach while a right turn takes you to Monkey Beach. Take the left turn and hike for an hour or two before you arrive to a secluded beach that is alluring and charming in every way imaginable. Alternatively you could also take a boat to the beach (it's about RM15 one way per person the last time I checked), but hiking to the beach makes the journey more enjoyable.

Enjoy the gorgeous sunset at the beach, or camp overnight and watch the stars at night as Kerachut Beach is a brilliant camping site (for those who know the spot). It also holds a turtle hatchery site, thus if you are a fan of turtles, this place would appeal to your greatly!

Exhausted after a day of hiking? Time for a huge meal to recharge if you ask me! No one visits Penang without having a taste of the famous Nasi Kandar, thus why not consider a plate! I have tried countless nasi kandar stalls in Penang, but the one that sticks in mind each and every time is most definitely Nasi Kandar Line Clear! Trust me when I say that Line Clear serves the best servings of nasi kandar anywhere in Penang!

Located in an alley in between Chulia Street and Penang Road, the place might not be the cleanest around, but you will forget about hygiene the moment you set eyes on the scrumptious dishes on display! Highly recommended is the Ayam Madu (Honey Chicken) which practically melts in your mouth, and for those that love Fish Head Curry, this is the place to taste the best of the lot!

The same can be said about their chicken curry, chicken kurma, fried squid, mutton curry and all their other dishes! No matter what you take, you would not be left disappointed!

Apparently Nasi Kandar Line Clear has been around since 1947! And if you are concerned about budget, worry not as Line Clear charges extremely affordable prices for their food.

Us tech people need a break too. So why not try out Malaysia's technology capital? Time to head off to Penang again, what say you?

Bung Mokhtar: Komen Dr Mohd Asri & PKR.. PAS?

Seragamkan undang-undang, elak kekeliruan

Dalam kenyataannya semalam, sayap wanita PKR negeri itu "mengucapkan tahniah kepada Hakim Wan Mahyuddin Wan Muhammad kerana tegas menangani isu berkaitan poligami."

"Wanita Keadilan Selangor memandang serius isu poligami tanpa izin.

Komen Blog Ibnu Hasyim: Itu pendpat Dr Mohd Asri & Keadilan. Apa kata PAS pula?

Tragic Incident at Brickfields Require Mental Health Reform in the Country

PRESS STATEMENT.

Tragic Incident at Brickfields Require Mental Health Reform in the Country

Early this morning, a pair of husband and wife jumped from their 29th floor condominium at Jalan Tun Sambathan, Brickfields after poisoning their own son. I believe the incident triggered many questions and responses from the public as well as the authorities on what were the underlying reasons for the couple to chose such devastating way in taking their child and their own lives.

I am of the view that such tragic incident requires the authorities to conduct full investigations not only on from the criminalogical aspect but also from socio-economic and physcho-social perspective. I emphatized with the fact that the current harsh living condition of urban poor due to commercially driven development and economic disparities would most of the time be too unbearable for the families or individuals affected that it could cause them to suffer from anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies.

As a consequence, in addition to in-depth investigation, I also call for a proper diagnose of the incident with the view of coming up with proper plan of action to address mental health issues on the ground. I hope that the government will observe similar incidents in order to ensure that any future development programme will not only be commercially driven and profit-oriented but people-centred as well.

Cara Main Judi Bola Sepak Piala Dunia

Posted: 20 May 2010 05:17 AM PDT

1. Judi adalah satu barah dalam masyarakat Malaysia.

10. Amacam ? Selamat pakcik tu yang kena petir motor dia. Kalau ditakdirkan kau menang judi bola sepak Piala Dunia nanti, belum sempat tuntut dah kena mati sakit jantung? Masuk syurga ke neraka agaknya ?

Kes Aminul-rasyid, Keluarga Buat Laporan "Cubaan Membunuh"

Posted: 20 May 2010 08:21 AM PDT

Goodbye Fabio...

Posted: 20 May 2010 07:33 AM PDT

I lost a friend, a joker and a professional photojournalist on Wednesday. Fabio Polenghi, 48, was shot and killed during a shootouts between the Thai police and the Red Shirts in Bangkok. Another 2 reporters were also injured.

I first met Fabio, an Italian freelance, in Johannesburg, South Africa in June 1997. We stayed at the same hotel but on different mission.

I was covering Dr Mahathir's official visit to Kasane, Botswana for the South African International Dialogue (SAID) while Fabio was looking at angles of the city.

For three days, we had breakfast and dinner together before parting. I remember teaching him a few Malay words like 'saya', 'kau', 'apa khabar' and 'terima kasih'. Few days after I got home, he called, saying he might come to Malaysia. I waited for 2 years but he didnt.

Surprisingly, I bumped into him at the residence of Guissuppe Mariascarpa de Marsellis, the Italian Ambassador to Malaysia in November 1999 and he immediately uttered 'alloooo kawan!'. I took him to NSTP the next day and then he left.

We did exchanged e-mails from time to time, the last was three months ago.

So long, Fabio. Rest in peace...

Healthy Eating Pyramid: Five Quick Tips - Harvard School of Public Health

Posted: 20 May 2010 07:00 AM PDT

We can't look at a pyramid these days without thinking of food and healthy eating. There was the U.S. government's Food Guide Pyramid, followed by its replacement, My Pyramid, which was basically the same thing, just pitched on its side. The problem was that these efforts, while generally well intentioned, have been quite flawed at actually showing people what makes up a healthy diet. Why? Their recommendations have often been based on out-of-date science and influenced by people with business interests in their messages.
Click here to read more about the  Healthy Eating Pyramid - What you should eat? - The Nutrition Source -  Harvard School of Public Health.

1. Start with exercise. A healthy diet is built on a base of regular exercise, which keeps calories in balance and weight in check. Read five quick tips for staying active and getting to your healthy weight, and a dozen ideas for fitting exercise into your life.
2. Focus on food, not grams. The Healthy Eating Pyramid doesn't worry about specific servings or grams of food, so neither should you. It's a simple, general guide to how you should eat when you eat.
3. Go with plants. Eating a plant-based diet is healthiest.  Choose plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats, like olive and canola oil. Check out these delicious healthy recipes that bring the Healthy Eating Pyramid into your kitchen.
4. Cut way back on American staples. Red meat, refined grains, potatoes, sugary drinks, and salty snacks are part of American culture, but they're also really unhealthy. Go for a plant-based diet rich in non-starchy vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. And if you eat meat, fish and poultry are the best choices.
5. Take a multivitamin, and maybe have a drink. Taking a multivitamin can be a good nutrition insurance policy. Moderate drinking for many people can have real health benefits, but it's not for everyone. Those who don't drink shouldn't feel that they need to start. Public VS Private hospitals

Posted: 20 May 2010 06:40 AM PDT

My consultations with specialists at government hospitals were not motivated by a lack of finance. It is not just a monetary issue. Government hospitals are not money-making enterprises, and the best researchers and doctors in Malaysia all operate from government hospitals.

My father went to two private hospitals and came back flustered when it was recommended he undergo angioplasty. My mother reminded him that he was a retired government servant, so he could go to IJN. He did, and all they did was put him on Lipitor. Since my father was a runner, he was in tip-top shape. He didn't need any heart surgery.

Sistem Kehakiman Negara Yang Bobrok Runtuhkan Istana Keadilan

Mahkamah Menyebelahi SPRM Boleh Siasat Selepas Waktu Pejabat

Diantaranya kes Perak, kes liwat DSAI, kes melibatkan SPRM, kes melibatkan SPR, kes melibatkan PDRM.

Jadi, keseluruhan sistem kehakiman negara sebenarnya bobrok.

A mosque at Ground Zero? A sick joke

Posted: 20 May 2010 05:39 AM PDT

If you were planning to build a new £68 million giant mosque and 13-storey "Muslim community centre", which site – anywhere in the world – would you think it most thoughtless to choose? The charred ruins of a Bali nightclub? A railway station in Madrid? Or perhaps the site of the most infamous Islamist terrorist attack of all – Ground Zero in New York?

This must count as the most crass idea since the award-winning plan to plant a red crescent (I kid you not) in the field in Pennsylvania in which flight 93 came down on that same day in 2001.

Amazingly, the organisation behind the Twin Towers mosque plan have said they picked the spot precisely because of its location. "Building a mosque where a piece of the wreckage fell … sends the opposite statement to what happened on 9/11," according to Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the cleric leading the project.

Really? Building a mosque on the site of the Twin Towers sounds to me like having your Islamic cake and eating it. Those guys who brought down the Towers: bad Muslims. Those people who build mosques on the same site: good Muslims. Either way, the point is, it's a gain for the religion which, misinterpreted or not, inspired the attacks.

Anyhow, enter Daisy Khan, the executive director of the sinisterly titled American Society for Muslim Advancement. Not the woman I'd get to make the case for the defence, but there you have it. Her argument? "We need to take the 9/11 tragedy and turn it into something very positive. It will also serve as a major platform for amplifying the silent voice of the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with extremist ideologies."

I'm sure that creating a mega-mosque in the area looks like very positive from certain angles, but not from where most Americans are sitting. Besides, those "silent voices" have been notably quiet of late. What's the guarantee that this great dawah project isn't going to backfire? After all, that £68 million price tag is awfully high. Are they really going to be able to raise it without any, ahem, foreign help?

Khan is right that Islam has had a run of bad PR recently, what with all the terrorism and decapitations and such. But I don't think bringing "something positive" out of 9/11 is what most people want, do you? Douglas Murray in The Telegraph

Near Death Experience!

This is a bitch post so don't bother reading if you don't wanna hear me bitch!

Malaysian drivers are just plain moronic! They don't bother stopping at junctions, they make turns whenever they like and don't bother signaling, the drive the wrong side of a one way street road and endanger other people and they just bloody well park anywhere they blooming like.

In the past two days alone wifey and me nearly had ourselves run over, almost smash front first into another car and nearly got rammed by two cars!

Yesterday morning while sending the boys to school, this stupid lady just decided to make a U-turn at a small busy road without even indicating her actions. She just turned and I nearly rammed my car right into her. If I wasn't alert enough I'm sure there would have been some serious injuries.

I don't know what was running through her stupid thick skull to even attempt a U-turn on a small busy road with school going kids around but she just did it and didn't even bat an eye lid. I felt like getting out of my car and strangling her silly.

Then about an hour later, wifey and me were crossing a one way street and naturally we wouldn't look at the other end of the road before crossing cos it is after all a one way street. Just as we were in the middle of the road, this car comes zooming by the wrong side of the road almost running us down. He didn't even care that he was on the wrong side of the road and that he nearly killed two pedestrians.

Then today, or more specifically an hour ago, just after we had dinner and was driving back home, this lady just decides to come out of her parking bay at the very last minute even though I flashed my headlights at her. She nearly hits me on the side and doesn't even bother to at least show an apologetic gesture and just drives off, and at a snails pace at that irritating the life out of me when all of a sudden she spots another parking space and just turns into it without even signaling almost causing me to smash into her rear.

And it's not over yet, just down the road, another moron decides to just come out of his parking and once again narrowly miss ramming into my car. It's not like he couldn't see me, It was dark and I had my headlights on. If it was the day time, I could understand but it was night and my headlights were more than enough to let him know I was passing by!

Half the time I feel like coming out of my car and kicking their idiotic butts. Normally they get a shake of my fist which wifey doesn't really like me doing cos she says it makes me look like a thug ... hahaha ... One of these days they'll get more than a shake of my fist and see a steering lock flying at them so much so that they'll end up needing roadside assistance!

I really don't know what is it with drivers these days. I wonder how much they actually paid for their driving license cos I'm pretty sure they didn't get it legally seeing as how none of them even understands and road rules! Or knows how to drive for that matter!

Told you this was a bitch post!

SO WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Posted: 20 May 2010 04:41 AM PDT

Last night, Bloomberg reported HERE that an Indonesian terrorist killed last week was planning to attack a train station in Singapore's main shopping district, the Straits Times reported, citing a senior Indonesian police investigator familiar with the matter.

The report said:

Singapore's Orchard train station was circled on a map of the city-state's rail network found at the home of Ahmad Sayid Maulana, who was shot during a raid in East Jakarta on May 12, the newspaper said, citing the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Singapore's Internal Security Department sent a team to Jakarta to discuss the findings with Indonesia's police, the nation's Home Affairs Ministry said in an e-mailed statement.

"We are aware of the items recovered and the speculations and possibilities that the terrorists could have been planning an attack against Singapore, and we are investigating," the ministry said. "We should also keep in mind that Singapore has been and remains a target for terrorists and we must always maintain our vigilance."

Police also found a map of the General Santos International Airport in Mindanao, southern Philippines, and 11,517 Malaysian ringgit ($3,550) at Maulana's house, the report said.

In sharp contrast, The Star reported HERE today:

Three suspected Islamic militants were arrested Thursday as Indonesian counterterrorism police continued raids against alleged members of a new terrorist group.

National police spokesman Brig. Gen. Zainuri Lubis said the men arrested Thursday in the Central Java town of Sukoharjo are suspected of belonging to al-Qaida in Aceh, a terrorist group whose training camp was raided in February.

"We suspect that they are linked to several bombings in Indonesia," Lubis said.

The men were flown to the national police detention center in the capital, Jakarta, for further investigation.

Police seized two assault rifles, a revolver, a pistol disguised as a pen, thousands of bullets, bulletproof vests and several books about jihad from their home.

At least 19 suspects have been arrested in the last week in an anti-terrorism crackdown that comes ahead of the anticipated June visit by President Barack Obama.

Those killed Wednesday included Saptono, who goes by a single name, a suspect in the 2004 attack on the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, and Ahmad Maulana, who is said to have received militant training in the southern Philippines.

Police are still identifying the three others.

Indonesia, which has the world's biggest Muslim population, has been engaged in a long battle against militant extremist groups.

In February it broke up a paramilitary training camp in western Indonesia run by the previously unknown al-Qaida in Aceh, a splinter of Jemaah Islamiyah, the Southeast Asian terror group blamed for deadly bombings here in recent years.
Read both reports carefully (or even the many other reports HERE or even the TAIPEH TIMES or AFP report HERE) and you may notice a startling fact.

I find the news very disturbing and pray that peace will prevail and that there will be no more terrorist attacks anywhere.

I called my former student in Bangkok last night and she was in tears as she told me what she saw and how she escaped safely. I pray that Thais will be able to find a peaceful solution to their conflict.

May we always treasure peace, safety and security in our nation and may we work towards bridging the divide and not worsening it.

Since no mention is made with regards to the evicted units and occupants of the above camps, I therefore assume that the units will be disbanded to save cost that is likely to be incurred by the government.

Can someone please confirm whether the above note is true or otherwise?
