DAP wins "historic" by-election in Sibu

Posted: 16 May 2010 09:29 AM PDT

Photo shows downtrodden supporters of the losers, Malaysia's ruling National Front hold its flags as they shout slogan during a parliamentary by-election in Sibu, Sarawak, east Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's opposition on Sunday snatched a parliamentary seat in a ruling coalition stronghold with a surprise and "historic" by-election win.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) was expected to hold on to Sibu, in Sarawak state on Borneo island, but lost it by 398 votes to the Democratic Action Party (DAP), state media reported.

The DAP is a member of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's Pakatan Rakyat alliance.

"This is a historic win for the Pakatan alliance," veteran opposition politician and DAP leader Lim Kit Siang told AFP.

"This is because the BN's loss in Sibu shows that its strongholds on Borneo island are no longer safe," he added.

The Sibu victory means the opposition has now won eight out of 11 by-elections since the BN was bruised in 2008 national polls.

Analysts say the latest opposition victory casts doubt on the government's sway in Sarawak, where the large share of parliamentary seats means the state could be decisive at general elections expected by 2013.

"The loss has big implications as it has now slowed down Najib's momentum after winning in the two previous by-elections," political analyst James Chin told AFP.

Over the last few days Premier Najib Razak campaigned in the state to get the Chinese vote, promising 20 million ringgit for infrastructure projects and the upgrading of Chinese-language schools in a constituency where ethnic Chinese form 67 percent of the population.

Although the BN last month won a by-election in Selangor state, seen as an endorsement of Najib's reformist policies, the ruling coalition saw a dramatic drop in Chinese support.

"The decline in Chinese support in Hulu Selangor and Sibu are consistent with the 2008 general elections as the Chinese ground has yet to recover for the BN," Chin said.

The BN lost its two-thirds majority in parliament and control of five states in the 2008 election.

Tumbangnya Keangkuhan BN Di Sibu. Sarawak Bukan Lagi Simpanan Tetap BN.

Posted: 16 May 2010 08:09 AM PDT

Keputusan RASMI:

BN: 18,447
DAP: 18,845
Bebas: 232
Majoriti: 398.

Undi pos sedang dikira.

-TMI

thank you, people of sibu

as at about 11.00pm, the official announcement is that DAP won by 398 majority.

THANK YOU, PEOPLE OF SIBU!

UPDATED 12 MIDNIGHT

whooa!! i'm so happy that DAP won in the sibu by-election. at last the people had 'spoken up'. the people had rejected BN!! i see change forth-coming (hopefully). i hope that next year when sarawak has its state election, PR will win big!!! come on, people of sarawak, reject BN, vote PR!!

i was following the election result live at my fellow CJ's site, sarawak book. at first it was mentioned DAP won by majority of over 2000. i wonder how come suddenly it reduced to so little.  it was interesting to note the twits here and there how EC delay making the official announcement.  it's always like this. when the opposition win, the announcement will be delayed. what does this shows? EC is not impartial!  lim kit siang also twit that najib did not want to admit defeat so the delay in the announcement and they also want recount and all that.  well, najib had been such a nice santa claus to 'help' the people of sibu, even to the last minute (on saturday night) when huge allocation was made to 3 churches, that he expected to win, i guess. but the people of sibu were smart. they had seen the evil and corrupt ways of BN.

funny… the postal votes of over 2000 votes, DAP only won 70. er.. not funny actually but as expected. postal votes is always open for manipulation and cheat… and you know lah…..

anyway, i hope that this win in sibu will pave the way for PR to work harder to gain the people's trust, so that come GE 13, PR will really able to take putrajaya!!

here are the results taken from malaysiakini:

Votes cast – 37,919 votes
Turnout – 70%
Spoilt votes – 395 votes
Majority – 398 votes
Postal votes – 2,429 votes

DAP – 18,845
BN – 18,447
Ind -232
Majority – 398

The final result of the postal ballots:
DAP – 70
BN – 2,323

Stephen Tong's Evangelistic Rally In Sibu (唐崇栄萬人佈道會) - Part 20

Posted: 16 May 2010 07:58 AM PDT

Rev. Dr. Stephen Tong arrived here today for his evangelistic rally scheduled from 17th to 19th of May at Sibu Town Square. The target for the rally is at 10,000 people per night. Please pray hard for it.
Part of the programme of this mission-bound trip to Sibu is to give an open theological lecture at The Masland Methodist Church this afternoon at 2:00pm for a duration of two hours.
Themed "The Investments of Satan and The Collapse of Christians", the open lecture gathered approximately 2,000 church members to partake of the exposition.
At 70, Rev. Dr. Stephen Tong does not quite look his age. I last saw him in 1996 when he came to Sibu to preach at a gospel rally held at Padang Sukan Tuanku Haji Bujang. Gee, he does not seem to have changed much since then.
Right at the start, Rev. Dr. tephen Tong admitted having poor health. The age apparently has worn out his sonorous voice. May God bless him with good vocal cords for the evangelistic rally.
The 90-minute lecture was a good exposition on the subject. I personally benefited from Rev. Dr. Stephen Tong's talk. From the notes that I have taken, I may share in my blog the theological lecture.
Please pray for good weather tomorrow so the rally may go on uninterrupted.

Sibu results please!

Posted: 16 May 2010 08:27 AM PDT

In a typical display of Election Commission incompetence (or is it something else?), the Election Commission predicted a voter turnout of 80% before the close of polling. And the end of it, they mentioned the turnout was around 59% ++. Now, it seems that DAP has clinched victory by a strand of hair, the turnout has suddenly increased in the region of 60% - one wonders if the change of mind have anything to do with some miraculous comeback for BN to win the by-election.

It's been an hour after the time Election Commission has said announcement of results would be made. Yet no news yet. It reinforces the suspicion that something fishy is going on.

Fingers crossed, hope for the best. If BN wins, we know it's not Sibuan's fault, but electoral fraud.

Update:
---------

Around 11.10pm, EC finally announces DAP won by 398 votes. What a relief!

It's been a while since PKR betrayals and Perkasa have been hogging the limelight for all the bad reasons. Eat this up, Jib! No more fixed deposit for East Malaysia. What are you going to argue now, that while Hulu Selangor affirms your policies, Sibu does not matter? Can't have the cake and eat it too, pal.

And to Wee Cho Keong.. if you have stayed with your Malaysian Democratic Party, no one would have voted you in 2008 General Elections. Nothing you argue about servicing people etc.. is going to change this fact. If you are a man, resign. Pakatan is now raring for another fight with BN, and we want someone trustworthy in Wangsa Maju to represent our interests. You probably also thought your resignation will take away some votes from DAP didn't you... naughty naughty.. well, it just goes to show how little influence you have outside Pakatan.

For the judges who are thinking about your tenure, think twice. The march to Putrajaya continues. Keep denying Anwar his evidence. We are watching you closely.

For the police chief who thinks that his security of tenure and that of his cronies are assured.. we are watching too.

Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali, you're a stunted slime and a pitiful excuse for human existence. Go back to your premordial soup and get a life. We're sick of you on the front pages almost daily reminding us why we don't feel proud being Malaysians because of pests like you. You're not a champion of your race. You insult them, demanding they hold on to their crutches long after they no longer need them.

House visit – Sponsorship assessment

Posted: 16 May 2010 06:36 AM PDT

When our Education Sponsorship for Children started off in 2008, 9 children from 5 families became the first batch to be considered and approved for the said program. An additional 7 children from 4 families were approved in 2009, bringing the total to 16 children.

Applications for the program then slowed down a bit as most of the children from poor families were already under the program. Other children not covered by the Sponsorship, but need help at the beginning of each schooling year would be covered by our Children Education Fund (CEF).

However, in March this year we had an application from an Orang Asli child, and I managed to get a sponsor by highlighting the matter through my facebook page. That brought the total of sponsored children to 17.

Then last week, a fellow volunteer called to ask if we could get financial help for Aini. Aini had been our client for 3 years now. When her case was first referred to us, her husband was still alive, but his health condition was already very poor. He died not long after the case was referred to us.

Aini was then still working as an assistant at a pharmacy. With 3 school-going children, life was tough, but she survived without having to seek financial help from others. We still covered for her children's back to school expenses for the next 2 years.

However since more than a year ago, the pharmacy where Aini was working at closed down and Aini was out of a job. She tried applying for jobs here and there but was unsuccessful. In her 40's, and with HIV, it wasn't easy for Aini. She ended up taking care of a neighbour's child at her home, getting paid RM200 per month. With that income, she pays her house rental of the same amount. In addition she's also getting Welfare Aid of RM300 per month which she depends on to pay for food, utilities and bus fares.

Of late, Aini had been having pains at her hips and checks later revealed that she had a minor fracture. In addition she had been having kidney problems for some time already, and is on medication (not on dialysis).

Although it had been a year since she lost her job, Aini tried her utmost best to support her children without having to seek help elsewhere… probably surviving on her savings.

However of late she had become more desperate as she found it hard to ensure there was enough food for the children. Which was why her buddy finally sought my help. After listening to Aini's problems, I figured we could consider her children for our Education Sponsorship program.

And so this afternoon, her buddy brought me and 2 other colleagues to visit Aini at home to assess her situation.

Since Aini and her children are regulars at our annual Family Day for the past 3 years, when we visited today, we didn't really need to be introduced. Even her children knew us already. So we were just there to ask her more of her latest developments… her income… her expenses… etc. And we could clearly see she had difficulty walking. She needs to go to the hospital at least once a week for physiotherapy – and given her condition, going up and down public busses is not advisable. So she has to take a taxi, which would usually charge her RM8 one way.

So yep, to us, her 3 children definitely qualifies to be considered for the sponsorship program. And it's good that the children loves going to school. I told the children that if we are able to get sponsors for them, they would need to report to this "gurubesar" (yours truly) as well on their progress in school, so that I can report to the sponsors.

When I got home today, I immediately highlighted the matter again on my facebook page, and I have now got sponsors for Aini's 11 year old son and 16 year old daughter. Still looking for one more sponsor for her 13 year old son…

So far, only anilnetto.com seems to be the only blog that can consistently provide that much needed 'LIVE' feed for SIBU by-election result.

Feeds in Facebook and Twitter are providing the updates as well
Malaysiakini and its mirror sites seem to have crashed.
Anyway, the result is still unofficial and Sibu4Change, the official site setup by PR, twittered:
#Sibu #P212 BN may ask 4 a recount... That'll make it a long long nite
