Away to PLKN (Day 69): SPM 09 Celebration At Red KTV and Bistro

Really want to thank Ker Ying for introducing this place to me and I like it. It's RED KTV and Bistro at Belissa Row. You sing, you drink and you play. It's fun. Although you don't get a room for yourself like at Red Box, but it's still fun because you get to hear other people sing. Only sometimes, when there's many people at RED, you will have to wait a little while longer only get to sing.

That night, after school, after Gurney Plaza, we went to RED to sing and drink, as a celebration for getting SPM result. My result was NOT-BAD only, so it's not good yet but still I wanted to celebrate for getting the result and no more waiting. You know, waiting for the result is saddening and uncomfortable.

3 months of waiting, played a lot and felt slacking and lazy so much. Shit that I've forgotten stuff that I had learned in high school before. Gonna stop all the slacking and go back to school soon, but it will be in end of July, still got very the long time.

There's me, Arron, Chien Chern, Yiphing, Chen Yuen and Sher Reen. RED was not quiet that night, we also met other friends like Zhao Wei, Elaine, Angellyn, Andy, Alvin, Jia Rong, Wallace, Ying Ting and more! Real fun.

Accident: BHP Cheras to blame? How about Vios jerk?

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 10:40 AM PDT

Just read Zestful One's posting - 'Accident on Cheras-Kajang Highway (BHP Incident) – Updated' for a compilation of updates from various sources - namely KomunitiKini, Bernama, ondscene and lastly a note posted on the Facebook by the guy who wanted to get fire extinguishers from BHP. Read the two spoilers!
I read ondscene. Apparently, there were two people in the Vios - Chen Yoke Xing, 24 years old and Chong Kar Jun, 17years old - one of them drove recklessly. Both of them are reported to be in critical condition and have been admitted to HUKMSC. An investigation will be conducted to determine if the driver was driving under the influence.

Pemujaan Najib: Katak dimasak dalam air panas

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 08:16 AM PDT

Peranan media

Setelah 8 Mac, kesedaran sivil semakin membangkit.

Subsidy: Dr Rafick addressing Idris Jala argument

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 07:56 AM PDT

  1. In the NST today, Idris Jala responded to the various reaction from all quarters of the society. Like he said in his presentation, he repeated it that it is painful but it has to be done otherwise the country may go bankrupt. I am one of the thousands of people who participated in the SMS survey that he talks about as well as the online survey that appears on the various online media. As mentioned the questions are not very fair. It has been done in such a manner where it is difficult for respondent to say NO.

  2. Having said that, I would like to address some of the issues raised by Idris Jala in his PC with the media which appeared in the NST.

He was asked questions by reporters and I reproduce below his argument as well as my reaction to his statement.

    1. Q: Why are we not protecting the poor and the low-income group in this subsidy rationalisation plan?

Idris Jala: For every subsidy reduction proposal, the lab has recommended mitigation measures to protect the rakyat, particularly the poor. For those whose electricity consumption is less than 100 kWh per month, the government will continue with the current practice of giving it free of charge. For those who consume between 101 and 200 kwH per month, the existing tariff applies (no change). These two categories constitute 56 per cent of all consumers.

In the case of fuel price increases, mitigation measures include a cash rebate of RM126 per year for those owning cars of less than 1,000cc and RM54 per year for owners of motorbikes of less than 250cc capacity. Car and bike capacity is used as a proxy to determine the poor.

In the case of flour, sugar, cooking oil and cooking gas, a cash rebate of RM20 per person per year will be given. A family of five will receive RM100 cash per year.

Dr Rafick: Our economy does not work in Silos. They are interconnected. Removal of gas related subsidy will increase the electricity tariff which will affect the nation industries production cost. This will led to a snowball effect where the price of goods will go up. A low income family may not pay more in electricity but they will pay more for the effect of increase in the price of goods.

The same argument applies with the rising fuel cost. Any instability in fuel price will led to price fluctuations in the consumables goods as consumable goods need to be moved from one end of the industry to the consumers and this is fuel dependent. The problem is not only about price increase but the fluctuations in Malaysian market. Our market reacts in a funny manner. When fuel goes up, everything goes up but when fuel price goes down, nothing comes down.

The rebates the government intent to give would not be sufficient to address the needs of the poor in terms of combating the price increase. It will increase the number of poor people and the poverty line.

Fact remains that we have a lopsided gas generation electrical supply deals with the IPP. This is the root cause of the problem that consumes the huge subsidy. It is not the people. Why isn't the government addressing this issue at source? This would have helped the people and reduce the government deficit budget.

On the price of petrol, we should not be too concern as we are a net exporter of oil. I hear you when you say that we use more fuel than the other neighbouring country. This is true and I must say it is by design. We design our city and township with very short sighted planning. Our neighbourhood are not well connected in terms of public transport. Therefore we are force to drive. As for the Somalis having to pay more for the fuel, I think you are not presenting an overall picture. You failed to highlight the state of economic, political and petroleum distribution issues that led to their high price.

The conclusion that I can make here is that the poor and weak will not be protected. It will be worsen by the government action. The government is punishing the people for their own financial mismanagement.

  1. (a) Q: You should not remove subsidies for education, health or agriculture.

Idris Jala: The lab agrees. Education is indeed an investment on human capital. We will continue to spend to provide subsidies for education, such as scholarships, textbook assistance, food, etc. However, we will remove wastages and abuse; for example, we will abolish the subsidised fee for foreign students.

Dr Rafick: I agree with you on your argument with regards to the cost of foreigners studying here. In reality, I believe the total of this amount saved is probably insignificant. However, every small bit of saving must be done. Therefore I agree with you on this point and I expect it to have been done years ago. It is something so obvious that our government is oblivious to for many years. In the process the government also needs to address the cost of providing education to the people in this country. I believe there are too many leakages and far too much wastage.

(b)
Idris Jala
: For health, we will continue providing subsidies but with a nominal outpatient fee of RM3, which is one of the lowest outpatient fees in the world. For agriculture and fisheries, we will continue the subsidies but will improve implementation so that the subsidies will reach the targeted group.

Dr Rafick: On the issue of health, it is a big issue and hard for me to explain the solution here. It is a topic by itself which I had addressed it in my previous writings. However, I must state that I find the government mechanism in providing cheap health care cost in this country is not optimal. In managing healthcare cost and providing healthcare, there is a need to separate the payer mechanism and the provision of health. Once this is done, only then the cost of providing healthcare can be optimised and solutions can be applied in finding the reduction is health care cost.

I reiterate here again, the current government measures will result in extreme cost escalation that goes far higher than income generation. It will increase the poverty line and number of poor people. With this measure, I suspect having a family of 5 and living in KL with a salary of RM3000 can be considered as poor and anything less can be considered as impoverish. The government action will burden the society which will only affect the government in other ways. Fact is the government need to have a haircut and a tummy trim. That is where the control measure should start. Lastly, let's have another dialog face to face in any lab. Please do it on a weekend.

Kenyataan Media: Kematian Norhashimah Timbulkan Banyak Persoalan

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 09:16 AM PDT

03 Jun 2010 |

Kami ingin membangkitkan beberapa persoalan :

a) Siapakah yang mengendalikan Modul Bina Semangat berkenaan?

Ibu musykil, mahu kematian pelatih PTD disiasat telus

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 08:51 AM PDT

Malaysian Insider

Syed Muaz Syed Putra

June 03, 2010

Dia dikatakan meninggal dunia kerana jangkitan paru-paru.

Malaysian Govt Self-Shaming Continues...

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 06:53 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR : A doctor who examined the young man accusing Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy testified Thursday there was evidence of sexual penetration even though he found no injuries.

Anwar, a former deputy premier who was sacked and jailed on separate sex and corruption counts a decade ago, has insisted the charges have been concocted in a conspiracy to end his political career.

On Thursday prosecutors at his trial took aim at the defence's argument that medical reports showed no evidence of anal sex -- an illegal act in conservative Muslim-majority Malaysia.

Mohamad Razali Ibrahim, a doctor at Kuala Lumpur Hospital who examined 25-year-old Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan after he complained he had been sodomised in 2008, said semen was detected on swabs he took from his body.

"With all the reports before me now, I would say there is evidence of penetration even without clinical injuries. With the presence of semen I would say there is anal penetration," he told the court.

The hearing adjourned for the day but defence counsel Sankara Nair said outside the court that the semen could have been introduced artificially.

"The semen could be anybody's, they have not established whose semen it is," he told reporters.

Nair said that Anwar had an alibi and would argue that during the time of the alleged incident, at an upmarket Kuala Lumpur condominium, he was in fact at a meeting at another apartment in the building.

"The alibi is our defence. He (Anwar) was at the opposite condo with several people including the owner," he said.

Anwar has said he is the victim of a plot to prevent him from taking power, after the opposition made huge strides in 2008 elections, stunning the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition which has been in power for half a century.

The trial began in February but has been punctuated by lengthy delays. At the end of the week it will go into a hiatus until mid-July.

Racist Perkasa ties: 'Have the guts to quit Umno'

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 06:43 AM PDT

GEORGE TOWN: A human rights leader today challenged Barisan Nasional component parties to leave the federal ruling coalition over Umno's unholy political alliance with the Malay supremacist NGO, Perkasa.

The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) supremo P Waythamoorthy said it would be politically correct if the other 12 BN component parties take Umno to task for its shameful link with the racist Perkasa.

He said BN allies should question Umno, including Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, for supporting Perkasa while forsaking the multi-racial interests of the coalition.

He said the BN partners should issue an ultimatum to Umno to either sever its unholy ties with Perkasa or watch the partners walk away.

"BN allies should exercise their equal rights within the coalition. They should stop Umno's racist agenda once and for all.

"They should have the guts to abandon Umno," the London-based Waythamoorthy told FMT today.

He said since it was formed in the aftermath of 2008 general election, Perkasa has championed a racist Malay supremacy agenda to the detriment of non-Malay/ Muslim citizens of the country.

He said that Perkasa leaders have been trumpeting about their agenda without fear of draconian laws, such as the Internal Security Act and Sedition Act, because they were backed by Umno.

He recalled that previously Umno Youth would act as the pressure group by propagating the Malay agenda to tame other BN component parties.

Umno ploy

However, since the electoral debacle in 2008, he accused Umno leadership of franchising its own racist agenda to Perkasa to camouflage the federal ruling party's real intention.

"Perkasa and its racist Malay agenda are simply another of Umno's privatisation project in the country.

"It's merely to maintain Umno's racist policy to marginalise others and safeguard the interests of one particular community.

"There is no other ruling party in any democratic society in this world as racist as Umno.

"It's now masking itself with Perkasa," said Waythamoorthy.

Besides Umno, the other component members are MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PPP, and Borneo-based parties -- Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko), Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and Sarawak People's Party (PRS).

Waythamoorthy alleged that Perkasa's opposition to the New Economic Model (NEM) was merely an Umno ploy to maintain its Malay supremacist agenda in the country.

"It's to regain the Malay electoral ground," he said.

He added that BN allies were duty-bound to check on Umno's wrongdoings in the coalition rule.

He said the allies should not allow Umno, with only 79 or 35.6% of the parliamentary seats, to dominate the country with a racist agenda.

He also said the component parties owed it to the people to stop Umno.

"It's time for BN allies to give Umno the 'abandon Perkasa or we leave' ultimatum," said Waythamoorthy.

Convoy of care or flotilla of fools? By Joe Fernandez

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 05:55 AM PDT

COMMENT: The Israelis may have been right when they dismissed the so-called humanitarian mission to Gaza as a cheap publicity stunt that had little to do with helping the Gazans, and mostly to do with breaking the maritime blockade imposed by Tel Aviv.

The Israelis offered to take the aid and distribute it to the Gazans directly, saying they did not want to risk any of the aid falling into the hands of the Hamas high command.

Tel Aviv's explanation seems to have been conveniently ignored by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin as he went berserk on the streets of Kuala Lumpur while the police looked the other way. We have not seen him getting similarly worked up on poverty, rising prices, extrajudicial killings, the harassment of Penans, or the level of corruption in the country. Charity begins at home.

The Gaza aid organisers, the Malaysians included, foolishly vowed "no surrender" and pledged to carry on despite Israeli reminders that the convoy would not be allowed to proceed.

Now the inevitable has happened. Déjà vu? Ask the trigger-happy Malaysian police who seek refuge, after their shoot-to-kills, under four emergency proclamations. Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who does not care that the Penans are in even greater need than the Gazans, should be ashamed that he encouraged the Malaysians on their foolhardy mission.

This is not the first time that he has pulled such a cheap public relations stunt to boost his image among the gullible rural voters deep in the heartland of Malay country and to improve his standing in the Muslim world.

He did it during the Bosnian war, when he encouraged quite a few Malaysians to symbolically adopt children from the ravaged country.

Tel Aviv's responsibility

The children of the Penans had a better claim for adoption, but for people like Mahathir they are a nuisance since they are squatting on rich timber tracts. What the Gaza aid organisers have failed to comprehend is that the welfare of the people of Gaza and the West Bank is the responsibility of the government in Tel Aviv. No self-respecting government in the world will stand idly by and see itself challenged on this score by some bearded do-gooder lefties leading a flotilla of sampans. Usurping the functions of a legitimate government is not the thing to do in the modern world.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman appeared on national television recently expressing disappointment with the UN Security Council for the mildness of its criticism of Israel's use of force. Afterwards, this question was text-messaged to him: "What would be Malaysia's response if a foreign flotilla of ships, led by the Bruno Manser Foundation of Switzerland, were to head towards the Sarawak coast with 10,000 tonnes of medical and food supplies for the starving Penans?" Anifah has not responded.

Thiri or သီိရိ or ႀသီ (in Burmese)

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 02:42 AM PDT

The Burmese name of my grandchild is Thiri or သီိရိ or ႀသီ (in Burmese) or Seri or Sri.

Sri (Devanagari: श्री, IAST; Śrī) is a Sanskrit word often used as a title of veneration.

Sri has the original meaning of radiance, or diffusing light.

***See Mishka (her Arabic Islamic name also means Light.

On the Myazedi inscription (also known as "Rajakuma inscription" or the "Gubyaukgyi stone inscription"), inscribed in 1113, is the oldest surviving stone inscription in Burma.

The first word written on it is ႀသီ or Shree or Sri and it now becames Thiri. Yes it started with this THIRI.

The inscriptions were made in four languages, namely Pyu, Burmese, Mon, and Pali, which all tell the story of Prince Rajakuma and King Kyanzittha. The primary importance of the Myazedi inscription is that the inscriptions allowed for the deciphering of the written Pyu language.

In Sanskrit grammar, Sri has the feminine gender but nowadays it is used as a masculine name prefix, equivalent to 'Mister' in English. It is gender-specific in Sanskrit, but the assumption that it is masculine has resulted in the titles of Shrimati (abbreviated Smt) for married women and Sushri for women (independent of marital status).

Usage

The abbreviation Sri. (also Sree., Shri., Shree., श्री॰) is usually used as an honorific for men. The title derived from Sanskrit श्रीमन् (śrīman). It is akin to English Mister (Mr.) This use may stem from the Puranic conception of prosperity. Through association with holiness and subsequent use as part of a name, it is akin to English Saint (St.).

Sri is frequently used as an epithet of some Hindu gods. When used as a title for gods, Śrī is sometimes translated into English as Lord.

Sri Devi (or in short Sri, another name of Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu) is the devi (goddess) of wealth according to Hindu beliefs.

Śrī is one of the names of Ganesha, the Hindu god of prosperity. The origin of the word Sri is traced to the account of Lord Ganesha losing his head while protecting his mother Pārvatī. This is why he is the first to be worshiped in all the yagyas.[

Other languages

South and Southeast Asia

Seri and Sri are used in most languages of the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia:

  • Devanagari: श्री
  • Indonesian: Sri, often used as a title of veneration, however "Sri" also the name of ancient Java rice goddess Dewi Sri
  • Javanese language treats it as a common part of names in, for example, the name of former Indonesian finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
  • Kannada:
  • Malay: Seri
  • Malayalam:
  • Tamil:
  • Telugu:
  • Thai: ศิริ, transcribed Siri; and ศรี, transcribed Sri or Si. Occur (as in Javanese) as part of names, as in the family name of Thai textile artist Jakkai Siributr (จักกาย ศิริบุตร), and the given name Bun Si (บุญศรี) of 16th-century King Worawongsathirat. Sri (ศรี), pronounced and usually transcribed Si, occurs in Thai place names as shown below.

Place names

The honorific is incorporated into many place names. A partial list:

  • Sri Lanka the country and administrative capital
  • Sri Perambadur, a town in the State of Tamil Nadu
  • Srinagar where nagar means a city
  • Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte
  • Srivijaya, a former kingdom centered on Sumatra, Indonesia.
  • Sisaket (Thai: ศรีสะเกษ) city and province incorporate Sri as ศรี, pronounced and usually transliterated as Si.
  • Ayutthaya city and province incorporate Sri in the official name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya
  • Nakhon Si Thammarat (นครศรีธรรมราช) also transliterates Sri as Si.

Other current usage

Sri, along with the forms Srimati and Susri, is often used by Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains as a respectful affix to the names of celebrated or revered persons.

Nepalese currency with the honorific Shri on the very top

There is a common practice of writing Śrī as first word centralised in line at the beginning of a document.

Another usage is as an emphatic compound (which can be used in multiple: sri sri, or sri sri sri, etc.) in princely styles, notably in Darbar Sri, Desai Shri, and Thakur Sri or as in Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a Hindu spiritual Guru and leader.

The honorific can also be applied to objects and concepts that are widely respected, such as the Sikh religious text, the Shri Guru Granth Sahib. Similarly, when the Ramlila tradition of reenacting the Ramayana is referred to as an institution, the term Sri Ramlila is frequently used.

Indian Music

Its usage is common as a raga name, either as a prefix or postfix. Some examples are Shree, Bageshree, Dhanashree, Malashree, Jayantashree, Rageshree, and Shree ranjani.
