Keterangan palsu Musa mengenai kelulusan akademiknya

"Selaku saksi Pendakwa Raya, Musa berkata, kelulusan profesional saya ialah Diploma in Law and Management Studies apabila disoal-balas oleh James Tsai, peguambela Datuk Ramli," kata beliau.

Democratise education first, says Nurul Izzah

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 09:25 AM PDT

By FMT Staff

KUALA LUMPUR: No real innovation will take place without first democratising the education sector and giving autonomy to the higher education institutions, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar said.

She said that without offering democracy and autonomy to the education field, the ambition of developing a strong human capital will remain a pipe dream.

"Democratising the education sector should be followed up by a sense of responsibility and integrity in the nation's economy," she said when debating the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

"This will show the government has the political will to encourage innovation," said Nurul Izzah, the Pakatan Rakyat's member of the Science, Innovation and the Environment Committee.

On June 10, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak unveiled the 10MP which focuses, among others, on nurturing a strong human capital based on skills development and innovation capabilities.

Nurul Izzah added that currently the nation's education is not centred on creative and analytical human capital.

"In terms of Global Competitiveness Index, our nation was at 19 in 2007 and tumbled to 21 in the following two years."

"In the latest list, we now stand at 24, behind nations like the UAE, Qatar, Luxembourg and New Zealand," she said.

She said this is a sign that the nation is in dire need of complete reformation of its education and its economic culture.

"Without this complete overhaul, the 10MP will fail," she said.

Queensbay Mall With Sumay, Mei Yen and Wei Jun

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 09:29 AM PDT

Two days ago, Thursday, I was bored and I went to watch movie at Queensbay Mall and walk walk. I didn't feel like going to Gurney which is near to my place so I went to Queensbay Mall. Called a few people out but in the end it was 2 girls with me, Mei Yen and Sumay, then Wei Jun came to join us after the movie.

We watched The Haunting Lover, it was a Hong Kong horror romance film but somehow seems boring to us and it's not scary and sweet to me. Though the cinema was full! I wanted to watch Karate Kid, but Wei Jun and Mei Yen has already watched it already. Forgot to mention, Wei Jun, Sumay and Mei Yen were friends I made in NS. =)

Because we were pretty late, the queue was long, and we didn't get a nice seat in the cinema. Though, it's still a lot better than to be on the first row. You know, sitting on the first row closest to the screen sucks a lot.

After movie, Mei Yen went back. Then it was me, Sumay and Wei Jun came to find us. Walked around the mall and met Ker Ying at there. Wanted to buy a 480ml tall water bottle at Muji-liked store, Material at RM29, but it's out of stock. Too bad, I safe back my money. Material does sells nice stuff but I don't like them copying Muji. >.<

IMG_4531 by nicholaschan.

IMG_4532 by nicholaschan.

Then we saw some cool stuff at the centre atrium of Queensbay Mall. There's the Toy's Story 3 roadshow and 3D LED TV demo. We went in the 3D TV thing to check it out, it was by Samsung. After wearing a 3D glasses, wow, the cartoon became 3D, pretty cool. 3D maybe the next big thing, but we need to have a lot of glasses if we have a lot of family members at home and it will look a little bit LOL when it's TV time, glasses must be on, that's the future high tech stuff.

After demo-ing, there's the Toy's Story character around the place for people to take photo with. You know, they're very funny because the toy soldier were really good, they really didn't move or smile to let people to take pictures with. I tried to make them smile, but they were strong, trying hard not to laugh or smile. Haha.

Sumay, me, Wei Jun.

Photo finish, we went back. No, we stopped by the beach for a while. =D Why no Mei Yen's photo? Because she came here for movie then went back straight away already, no chance.

Nazri only respects non-Muslims' rights with respect to sports betting

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 07:02 AM PDT

"You must remember that the country does not belong to the Muslims. There are things that sometimes non-Muslims do, for example, gambling. It is their culture, their way of life and we have to respect their rights. "Jangan semua undang-undang berdasarkan keperluan orang Islam sahaja (All laws in the country cannot be based on only the needs of Muslims)," Nazri told The Malaysian Insider this week.
The issue here is not about enacting a law against non-Muslims' betting. The issue here is about the issuance of sports betting licence. Legalising sports betting will make things worse as both illegal and legalised betting will thrive together. I know  of people who buy illegal empat ekor. Why is Nazri so concerned about the non-Muslims' rights to bet? So that the government can get money into its coffers?  How about non-Muslim's rights to religion - specifically the right to use the word 'Allah'? YAB PM Datuk Sri Najib urges Burma seek ‘reconciliation’

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 06:33 AM PDT

Prime Minister Najib Razak marked the 65th birthday of Burma's jailed opposition icon Aung San Suu Kyi by calling on her country's military junta to embrace democracy.

In a rare departure from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (Asean) policy of non-interference in members' internal affairs, Najib said: "I like to see national reconciliation in Myanmar (Burma)."

He also said he hoped electoral reforms adopted in Burma this year – which have nevertheless led to the dissolution of its main opposition – would involve all political players.

"I hope the democratic road map will entail a solution that is inclusive. That is the hope of Asean," Najib told reporters.

Suu Kyi, the world's only Nobel Peace laureate in detention, has been held for 14 of the past 20 years – mostly at her lakeside villa in Rangoon – after her National League for Democracy (NLD) won elections in 1990 by a landslide.

This year the NLD was dissolved under rules for forthcoming elections that critics have denounced as a sham and from which Suu Kyi has been excluded.

Asked if he would like to see Suu Kyi freed, Najib said: "I think the (Burmese) government knows what it needs to do to get the confidence and support of the international community."

Birthday cake for Suu Kyi in KL

Elsewhere in Kaula Lumpur around 100 Burmese exiles marked Suu Kyi's birthday with patriotic songs and speeches at a ceremony that ended with the cutting of a birthday cake.

"We feel very sad that Aung San Suu Kyi is being held by the military junta," Kyaw Myo Maung, 27, the event's organiser, told AFP.

"We urge the Myanmar people to boycott the election. The people will be cheated again. How can there be fair election with Aung San Suu Kyi and others leaders in jail," he asked.

Burma's junta has pledged to hold elections in 2010, but has not set a date for the polls, the first since it refused to recognise 1990′s result.

The NLD and Burma's ethnic minorities are suspicious about the election, fearing the junta will use it to legitimise its rule.

HE'S A BRAVE MAN!

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 03:24 AM PDT

It has been a very busy today today as the school break is coming to an end. Also, it is my uncle's birthday today. By the time I settled down, I came across THIS POST in The Star and I have to say Datuk Seri Idris Jala is a brave man indeed. The Star reported:

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Idris Jala insists that Malaysia needs to start reducing subsidies or face the risk of bankruptcy.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said that since 1998, Malaysia has been operating on a deficit budget, which has seen its debts increase.

He said the country's debt was growing around 12% annually and it would not be able sustain this based on the last decade's annual gross development growth of 4%.

"We have been borrowing to spend, it is increasing our deficit and debt, we cannot go on like this," Idris said at a talk with Parti Bersatu Sabah members on the 10th Malaysia Plan and other the government transformation programmes, here, Saturday.

"If you earn RM1,000 and spend RM1,200 a month, then you have borrow and if you go on (without an increase in salary), you are heading for bankruptcy as you won't be able to pay the debts," he explained.

Idris, however, said Malaysia's debt was still manageable but what was necessary was to reduce expenditure.

He said mechanisms had been worked out to assist the poorer groups if the subsidies were taken away.

Idris also said that Malaysia's 10% gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the first half this year was a good sign for its planned economic transformation to a high-income country.

Despite the flak he has received for his earlier statement, including Ibrahim Ali's call for him to step down, it appears that Idris is firm in his stand and I applaud his courage.

What I am more concerned about this evening is the fact that the authorities DO NOT seem to take heed of his warning and suggestions.

Anyone with any sense would automatically tighten the belt and trim the fats to cope with the situation. Even in this post, Datuk Seri Idris has said that it is necessary to reduce expenditure.

However, why didn't he make a direct appeal to the government to reduce expenditure? It is public spending which seems to be on the rise (such as highlighted in previous posts) and on stuff that do not benefit the people directly.

During such lean times, the government should be on cost-cutting measures but are they? Of course not. Instead, we read about how functions cost 100 000Rm (must they spend sooooo much on each function???), RM35 million spent on a pavillion for the Shanghai World Trade Expo', millions spent on the Istana Negara, the proposed million dollar shift to Putrajaya or a multi-million dollar renovation etc etc...(You can read more in MP Tony Pua's blog.)

So why take away subsidies which will certainly penalize the poorer folk?

Who is the one spending like there is no tomorrow??? Who is the one borrowing and taxing others to foot their bills???

Isn't it shocking to read that Malaysia has been operating on a deficit budget (which has seen its debts increase) since 1998? It has been TWELVE years and the spending is still going on!!!

So when will our politicians wake up????

Saramago Dies

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 09:34 PM PDT

Nobel winning Portuguese novelist, Jose Saramago, died yesterday at his home in Lanzarote, aged 87. He had been ill for some time.

He moved to the Canary Islands in 1998 after a spat with the Portuguese government concerning his novel The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, which many considered offensive to Catholics in its depicting a a flawed and very human Jesus. He also courted controversy as an unflinching supporter of communism.

Born into poverty in 1922 in a small village outside Lisbon, Saramago was largely self-educated. He never finished university but continued to study part time, supporting himself as a metal-worker. He's described by Helder Macedo, emeritus professor of Portuguese literature at Kings College London as :
... an avid reader (and) a voracious intellectual ... acquiring information as much as he could.
He wrote his first novel when he was in his 20s, but left off writing fiction for many years because he said he had nothing to say and turned to journalism instead.

When his membership of the communist party cost him his job as a newspaper editor in 1974, he returned to writing fiction, now well into his 50's. He called himself :
... a belated writer.
He wrote novels which tackled big themes and blended fact with fantasy and folklore. In Blindness, for example, he wrote about the whole population of a city losing its sight.

His 1982 novel, Baltasar and Blimunda, was the first to be widely translated, and to attract international attention. He won the Nobel in 1998.

Jose Socrates, Portuguese Prime Minister, has called Saramago one of Portugal's great cultural figures and said that his death had left the culture poorer.

NPR has an excellent piece on the author (which you can listen to as well). Carl Franzen on politicsdaily.com reveals five fascinating facts about his life. He is profiled too in The Globe and Mail.

Doubtless there will be any other tributes flooding in, and I will post links to them later below.

Got bored on a lazy Saturday afternoon, so I thought that I'd get entertained by this talking bird. It could distinguish between colours and shapes. It had a vocabulary of about 150 words which it used intelligently. Alex the parrot died in September 2007, so this video that I found on YouTube is a little tribute to it.
