Minister in the Prime Minister's department Nazri Aziz cannot be faulted for not wanting to interfere in Singapore's legal process over the case of a young Malaysian facing the gallows in the republic, said renowned jurist and human rights expert Param Cumaraswamy.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Param, a former UN special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, said that Nazri was often known for his "irrational public statements" yet in this case he could not be faulted as Malaysia and Singapore provided for the death penalty in their sentencing laws including making it mandatory for drug trafficking.

Mengapa Hakim Pula Yang Menyatakan PRK Libatkan Dana Yang Besar?

Kes Gigit Polis: Tian Chua "kekal" MP Batu

GB menghina mahkamah? Tidak! Hakim-hakim yang telah menghina insntitusi kehakiman negara!

Muslim States Seek U.N. Action on West's "Islamophobia"

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 07:28 AM PDT

Well, gee, can you think of a reason for the West's islamophobia?

GENEVA, June 16 (Reuters) - Muslim states said on Wednesday that what they call "islamophobia" is sweeping the West and its media and demanded that the United Nations take tougher action against it.Delegates from Islamic countries, including Pakistan and Egypt, told the United Nations Human Rights Council that treatment of Muslims in Western countries amounted to racism and discrimination and must be fought.

As opposed to Islamic countries, including Pakistan and Egypt, where religious minorities enjoy equality and tolerance, right?

"People of Arab origin face new forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance and experience discrimination and marginalisation," an Egyptian delegate said, according to a U.N. summary. And Pakistan, speaking for the 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), said the council's special investigator into religious freedom should look into such racism "especially in Western societies".

Acting for the OIC, Pakistan has tabled a resolution at the council instructing its special investigator on religious freedom "to work closely with mass media organisations to ensure that they create and promote an atmosphere of respect and tolerance for religious and cultural diversity".

Pakistan. Where apostates from Islam are put to death. The chutzpah of the Pakis is amazing, more hypocritical than any one else on earth! Go here to read how they screw their minorities.

Diplomats say the resolution, which also tells the investigator to make recommendations to the Human Rights Council on how its strictures might be implemented, is bound to pass given the majority the OIC and its allies have in the body.

Name me one country in the OIC out of 57 countries which treats it's minorities equally, guess the answer will be zilch, pleez, hold your breath, don't even think of shooting from the hip. More... Hat tip: More...

Mahathir Now Insults Malay Singaporeans

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 07:02 AM PDT

REACTION TO MAHATHIR'S REMARKS
In Singapore, we don't kowtow

I READ with concern Tuesday's report, 'Malaysian Malays might kowtow to others if...', in which former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad claims that even though Malay Singaporeans enjoy the benefits of a more developed country, they have to 'terbongkok-bongkok' (kowtow) to others.

Tun Dr Mahathir could have been more sensitive towards the feelings of Singapore Malays.

As a Malay Singaporean living and working peacefully with fellow Singaporeans of all races, I cannot agree with what he said.

Singapore's leaders worked hard for many years to achieve racial harmony, tolerance and understanding among Singaporeans. Today, we live and work together as one family; and we have reaped the rewards of being one of the safest and most developed nations in the world.

While Dr Mahathir's opinion on Malay Singaporeans enjoying the benefits of a developed country is spot-on, we have never kowtowed to others. Singaporeans of all races, including Malays, engage in healthy debate and discussions with our Government. The decisions made by the Government, after hearing feedback from its people, are respected as we trust it is in the best interests of all Singaporeans.

Through community support and hard work, Malay students in Singapore have bettered their results in various national examinations. Such achievements are celebrated by all Singaporeans.

With better education, Malay Singaporeans have achieved a better lifestyle for their families compared with a large percentage of Malays in Malaysia. We worked hard to be where we are today and in no way kowtow to anyone to gain success. Meritocracy remains the benchmark of our society. While this works in Singapore, it may not work in Malaysia.

Having many relatives, friends and business associates of all races in Malaysia requires me to travel frequently across the Causeway. Over the years, I have seen and learnt that for the minority to succeed in Malaysia, they need to kowtow to others.

The irony is that many ordinary Malaysian Malays who have no connections, or fail to share their potential success with the 'right' people, will never have it easy to succeed. Perhaps, favouritism, cronyism and bribery are problems Dr Mahathir may want to address in his country.

As for me, a Malay Singaporean, I would like to say thank you to my Singapore leaders. You have made Singapore the best place to live peacefully in for me and my family.

Mustaffa Othman

-----------------------------------------------------

'Like others, Malay Singaporeans work hard for the benefits in a meritocratic system.'

MR AHMAD ABU BAKAR: 'I strongly object to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's remarks. Like others, Malay Singaporeans work hard for the benefits in a meritocratic system. They are not born with a crutch of ethnic rights, quotas and 'unfair' opportunities. When Singapore Malays graduate from universities as doctors, engineers and scientists, they can hold their heads as high as the others, because they have done so by their own hard work and merit.'

'The Malays in Singapore stand shoulder to shoulder with other Singaporeans.'

MR NIAZ MOHAMED: 'The prosperity of Singapore is proof enough of its internal stability achieved through excellent inter-racial and inter-religious harmony. A non-Muslim can visit any mosque in Singapore where he will not only be welcomed with hospitality, but also given a guided tour. Similarly, any person may visit any house of worship if he is modestly attired and receive the same hospitality. The Malays in Singapore have made great strides in all areas and stand shoulder to shoulder with other Singaporeans.'

'Singaporeans of all ethnic backgrounds have come a long way since 1965.'

MR JEFFREY LAW: 'Most people will dismiss Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's remarks as merely political rhetoric. Singaporeans of all ethnic backgrounds have come a long way since 1965, having embraced the system of meritocracy in all aspects: education, employment and social standing. Most important, our ability to be a developed country within such a short time is due to the concerted effort and sacrifices of all Singaporeans - Chinese, Malays, Indians and others.'

AMERICAN PIT BULL
mahathir jus trying to create dispute anong our ppl.
we may be a rojak country.
but our guns are always unitedly pointed outwards

ultralib
Mahathir is just very jealous of Singaporeans.
He has created a whole generation of Malaysians who cannot speak English and will continue to rely on the govt for handouts.
Their English vocab is one two three, yes boss, no boss, I love you.

Busy month ahead...

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 06:20 AM PDT

WHOOOOSH!! Almost half the year is gone. Waaa… so fast?

So what activities had we (Buddies) done for the first half of the year other than the usual clinic duties, outreach, taking care of the affected children's educational needs and visiting/calling our HIV clients?

In March I gave a talk to a group of students from ITP, Ipoh. During the same week, we also put up an exhibition booth at Kinta City, Ipoh in conjunction with the International Women's Day 2010 organised by the Perak Women for Women.

We put up another exhibition booth in May during a conference organised by the Perak Palliative Care Society. During the same weekend, I and 4 other volunteers also took part in a Charity Relay Run held at Ipoh Padang, where each of us had to run 2km.

Also in May, although Buddies were not directly involved, I was invited by virtue of representing Buddies as an NGO, to be in the committee to work together with a few other NGOs under the Sekretariat Pembangunan Wanita & Sosial Negeri, organising awareness campaigns on women and social issues. Our first event was a seminar on domestic violence. More campaigns will be organised, although the next event under this committee has yet to be decided.

So, what's coming up in July?

I have been invited to give a talk at a university college in Negri Sembilan during a seminar on HIV/AIDS. I have given talks on HIV before, but this time it will be different. The talks that I had been giving so far were more on HIV in general – how it spreads etc. I'd usually just use the slides/powerpoint presentation already prepared by the Malaysian Aids Council (MAC). This time, the organisers have invited reps from the Institute of Medical Research to cover the medical aspects and reps from MAC will be showing their slides on HIV in general. I on the other hand, have been invited to share my experiences in dealing with the HIV infected/affected people. No prepared slides, so I'm in the process of preparing one. I want the audience to look at something else other than just my boring old face during the talk… :-)

The next day, I promised to have a Masters student from American University in Washington DC follow me for a day while I go round doing my voluntary work. She's in KL for 2 months this summer, and as an independent study for her Uni on the impact of HIV/AIDS on Muslim women, she wants to do as much research as possible while she's here in Malaysia.

The first Sunday of August, as usual, will be our Family Day (we will have to choose another date in future if the first Sunday of August coincides with fasting month). We have not made the final decision as to the venue of this year's Family Day although we have shortlisted 3 places. We will have to decide by this month's Board meeting as by July we will need to make all the necessary arrangements. Chances are in July the Family Day sub-committee will be meeting every week to make sure everything is in order.

We are also planning to start our support service during HIV clinic at Taiping Hospital beginning July. I've already got a few volunteers willing to take turns to go there, so we might as well start something soon.

So yeah, July will probably be quite a busy month for me. Never mind, one step at a time. I don't want to stress myself out, do I? But not to worry, if I do get stressed, I've got the Stress Reduction Kit ready…

Anwar Bidas Kerajaan Cuba Alih Isu Kepada Soal Pengganas

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 05:51 AM PDT

Umno-BN Bangkit Tentang JI Alih Isu Apco, Tanah KTMB, Limbang, Lesen Judi

-SK

Pengganas: K'jaan cuba alih tumpuan rakyat

Video VK Lingam Dedah Konspirasi Hakim, Apa Tindakan RTM?

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 05:38 AM PDT

Anwar Cabar RTM Apa Tindakan Terhadap Video VK Lingam Sebelum Dedah Video Lompat Parti

-SK

Astro beyond means...

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 03:41 AM PDT

If we get a hospital bill, we should send it to astro. It's been frustration all the way since we signed up for astro beyond. We now call it astro beyond means beyond the control of the voice that we are speaking to, whether it is the technician that installed the setop box or the technical assistance we call.

Here's what happened... astro sends a very young team of technician to install the setop box. That was 2 days ago. They also adjusted the existing satellite dish. Whilst the technician is here, the viewing is interrupted constantly with the message...'invalid smart card..' every few minutes. My son tells them it's the setop box and the smartcard. They are faulty and need to be replaced. The technician insists it will normalise automatically. He says leave it on and it will normalise. An he left. With our old setop box for regular astro. 48 hours later the problem is still there. In the meantime we call the technician, he says it is beyond his control, call astro.

So we call astro, wait for a long long time. That was last night. No one picks up the phone. Then we call astro again, wait for a long time again. We got to speak to technical assistance. The technician says they'll do a diagnostics from their side this morning. Then they find it can't be resolved. They'll send someone to pick up the setop box within the next 48 hours to take it for diagnostics. But. They can't give us a replacement setop box. So it must mean we won't be able to watch astro at all. The voice says it is beyond his control...

I guess in our kind of big is better and where there is no competition, this is what we have to put up with. We become sitting ducks for bad service. As if it is a free service. The system has no sense.

If you sign up for beyond and you get a faulty box, bad luck. You are stuck with that box until that box gets fixed, even if it was faulty from day one. That we think is the most ridiculous system. I guess with a low income society like Malaysia coupled with monopoly, any bad system no matter how ridiculous, still sells. What is a few disgruntled customers amongst millions, right?

We are talking about an enhanced service from normal satellite tv to high definition tv and yet the service level is pretty much third world. And the way customers are treated clearly needs to be taken up a notch higher. We may be a low income society but that does not mean that the country is filled with senseless non thinking idiots. Give the customers some sense of dignity.

LET'S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 03:08 AM PDT

Free Malaysia Today carried an article HERE where BN state secretary Dr Hilmi Yahaya blamed the loss of confidence in the political leadership and the socio-economic climate for dwindling foreign direct investments (FDI) in Penang. He cited lack of new factories and the dearth of re-investments by existing foreign multi-national companies (MNCs) attested to this.

In that article, Dr. Hilmi pointed out that foreign investments in Penang went down from RM10.2 billion in 2008 to RM2.2 billion last year.

The Malaysian Insider carried an article HERE where Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that Penang's foreign investments from March 2008 to December 2009 registered around RM9 billion.

Penang has only recorded RM100 million in the first two months this year, said Hilmi, compared with BN-led Perak which attracted nearly a billion ringgit in FDI.

Well, on the 13th of March 2010, MP for Taiping Nga Kor Ming wrote THIS in his blog:

Ever since coup-de ta taken place at Perak, the FDI in the state had dropped 600% from RM2.4 billion in 2008 to RM399 million in 2009. The silver state sees a mediocre performance by approving only 47 projects throughout the whole year.

However, Zamry & Co still issued false and misleading statement that boasted Perak had attracted RM11.6 billion in 2009 which is clearly misleading and a total lie.

In view of the fact such misleading statement will affect the government's integrity, Perak DAP demanded BN to issue an open apology to the rakyat of Perak.

Hilmi, who is also the Teluk Bahang state assemblyman, alleged that the statistics speaks for itself on the effect of foreign investors' confidence a particular government and he chided Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's administration for not being up to the mark in wooing foreign investors. He also rebuked Lim's government for claiming credit for other people's sweat, alleging that the 2008 investments were actually the result of the previous BN administration's hard work. You can CLICK HERE to read the article from FMT.

Perhaps Dr. Hilmi might want to download THIS pdf file HERE that outlines the achievements of the Penang state government under PR. The latest statistics (accurate ones!) are available in the pdf file.

Dr. Hilmi said that Intel Malaysia, a major long-time investor in Penang, for instance has closed down several manufacturing plants in Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone (FIZ) in recent months and shifted operations to the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah. While that is the truth, the move by Intel is NOT RELATED to their lack of confidence in Penang.

The Star reported HERE:

In a statement released Thursday from its Santa Clara, California office, the company said the plans were part of the company's move to restructure some of its manufacturing operations and align its manufacturing capacity to current market conditions.
..........
Apart from the two test facilities in Penang, Intel will also close one plant in Cavite in the Philippines and will halt production at a water fabrication facility in Hillsboro, Oregon in the United States

On political front, Hilmi claimed that BN's chances of recapturing Penang from Pakatan's grasp were increasing by the day. He said the Malay and Indian voters are returning to the BN fold and it was now the matter of wooing back the Chinese voters. He said that they had to get down to the ground often to disseminate the correct information and explain issues to the grassroots. Well that is true. If he had been speaking to the layman everyday, he would know the feelings of many Penangites. And if he had been attending ceramahs or forums held by the state government, I am sure he would be quite surprised to know the feelings at the ground level.

Perhaps then, he may not be so confident that BN can recapture Penang from Pakatan's grasp.

What do you think? Do air your views. Thanks! Have a nice day.

You might want to check out what I wrote HERE about Azhar Ibrahim's confidence in recapturing Penang. Thanks!

Sinar Harian 15 Jun 2010

A SURFEIT OF FROGS!

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 12:39 AM PDT

Years ago, I could see gentlemen skinning frogs for sale at a few markets. I remember how I was so grossed out then. It is altogether a different tale today. The mere mention of 'frogs' conjures a different image! Malaysians probably have a surfeit of frogs with all the hopping from PR component parties to become BN friendly independents.

Political defections is not a recent development. If you google 'political defections', you can see that it happens from the east to the west. However, in the last one year or so, it has been increasing in frequency, much to our horror.

THIS SITE gives a brief overview of the four most famous political defections in Malaysia in the 20th century. This site gives a brief summary of British political defections in the last 120 years! I am sure each of us feel very strongly about this topic.

To defect from a party and yet hang on to the position of MP or state assemblyman which was won on the party's ticket can be perceived as a betrayal of the rakyat's trust in that person.

Personally, I believe defection is justified IF the party has done a great wrong to the citizens or if it has done something unprincipled and if all other channels of mediation have been exhausted.

If a person wants to cross over to another party, then it is right for him or her to resign from the seat first instead of resigning, holding on to the seat and then joining/supporting another party.

THIS SITE reported:

A Malaysian opposition leader has called for enacting an anti-defection law after one of his party legislators switched sides to be 'friendly' to the ruling coalition.

Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Karpal Singh urged the government to consider enacting anti-hopping legislation or a code of ethics for politicians to ensure that elected representatives vacate their seats after quitting the party.

His plea came after Perak state legislator Keshwinder Singh, also an ethnic Indian, quit the DAP to become a Barisan Nasional (BN)-friendly independent assemblyman.

The DAP chairman said the trend now was for a politician to quit the party but choose to remain as an elected representative.

"Ethically, they should also quit the post as they were voted on a political affiliation of either the Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Rakyat (opposition alliance).

To be fair, BOTH sides are wrong.

DSAI started it wrt September 2008 issue when he made a big hoo ha of BN reps crossing over. I have to admit I was blind then when I agreed to it. Today, older and wiser, I can safely say that ANY DEFECTION is wrong - be it PR crossing over to BN or BN crossing over to PR.

Leaders from both sides of the divide MUST STOP talking or dreaming about gaining strength from defections and put all that has happened behind us. It is not easy to do that - after all, Perak fell to BN because of defections. Zefry Dahalan of FMT wrote an analysis of this issue which you can read HERE.

He wrote:

For the past week, the rumour mills have been working overtime after it was revealed that three Umno state assemblymen were about to jump ship to PKR.

PKR Perak information chief Zulkifly Ibrahim told a press conference that their names cannot be revealed because negotiations were still ongoing.

Following this, BN's Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir was forced to deny the issue, almost on a daily basis.

However, it seems that PKR's strategy has backfired since it was a state rep from its Pakatan Rakyat partner DAP who threw in the towel. CLICK HERE for more.

I certainly hope that both sides can put to death any dream of having reps from the other side to join them to strengthen their position. Coping with the news of defections is bad enough. Worse still is when some frogs begin croaking about their previous ponds so to speak an finding fault with their previous habitat. And then the defendants have to counter those allegations. You can see examples HERE and HERE.

Elected representatives were not elected to office to squabble over supposed scandals or other petty issues but to defend and to develop the country for the collective good of the citizens. I sincerely hope that they will remain true to their calling and concentrate on their track record of service to the rakyat. The same goes for the parties concerned.

Remember we elected you to office and if the track record is not good, then the writing is on the wall. As it is, we are quite nauseated by a surfeit of frogs so please - NO MORE HOPPING TO ANY SIDE!!!

Potong.....Potong......Potong.........

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 12:06 AM PDT

Salam to all & good day,

Mereka perlukan duit untuk makan, bukan nak berlanja sakan macam org malaysia kat sini, habis bulan habis gaji perhabis beli benda-benda macam-macam kat luar tu, ni duit nak makan pun takda, mcm mana nak beli benda lain, kalau gaji sampai hampir 100% dh dipotong, makan apa diorg tu, adakah diorg boleh makan rumput rumpai, pasir atau tanah kat luar rumah diorg tu, aku rasa tak mungkin, sebab diorg manusia, bukan binatang.

Aku bukan apa, kalau dah ada orang sampai bagitahu aku tentang benda ni, rasa sedih dan kasihan pun ada jugak, sebab ejen diorg ni memang pikirkan keuntungan je, tak pikir perasaan orang macam mana, kalau sampai orang nak makan pun takda duit, ni mana boleh jadi, kalau aku diperlakukan macam tu, memang aku akan kerjakan diorg tu cukup-cukup, ni budak perempuan, nak buat apa, nangis je yg diorg tau bila nasib diperlakukan macam tu.

Tggu lagi cerita selanjutnya......

Fiesta Yang Gagal, Najib Dimalukan

Hanya 300 Hadir Perasmian Fiesta Kelantan, Najib Terus Pulang Elak Malu

-SK

Mustapa ganti Najib rasmi Kelantan Fiesta 2010

-harakahdaily
