away for news writing course

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 10:47 AM PDT

i'll be away for the weekend to attend 2 classes offered by malaysiakini on 'news writing' and 'news photography' will be taking the aeroline bus today – the 8.30am one. reached KL, meeting up with a few friends – first to go shopping, then to catch up on chit chat during dinner.  must enjoy first lah before getting down to serious work.

as i'm bringing along my notebook, i'll be able to get on the net (i have 2 broadband modem now!), so i can still post i guess but for sure i'll be updating my status at facebook… especially now i have a smart smartphone (HTC smart model, see).

in the meantime, for the weekend, i leave you with this exceptional excellent video 'selepas tsunami' produced by komas, and hosted by someone i know (and admire), haris ibrahim.  this video was banned by the government.  i have seen it before a few months ago… but i think i only caught part 1 (from youtube). do watch it and be in the know! well not only watch it but introduce it to all your friends – let everyone know the truth!

you can watch it at the vimeo site (with language translation) or youtube site. it's 1/2 hour long so i'm not going to post it here.

Mecca's Giant Clock, The World's Biggest, Starts Ticking On Ramadan

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 09:52 AM PDT

August 12, 2010
Islam's holy month of Ramadan is a lot about the calendar and the clock. The world's biggest clock began ticking in Mecca this week, to signal the beginning of Ramadan. It took 90 million pieces of colored glass mosaic to cover its tower. Green and white lights flash five times daily as a reminder to pray.

Najib the 'clown'?

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 09:11 AM PDT

Looks like our PM is still not up expectation to some quarters of the community. They still want to find fault in him, chiding him as a 'clown' and a 'funny prime minister'. I dont know how perfect a prime minister should be to them.

One Richard Loh wrote in the Malaysian Insider that Najib's character gets funnier by the day, and the book about him which was launched on Tuesday was not necessary to explain his policies as his 'clown media' are already doing it for him.

Excerpts from 1 Funny Malaysia + 1 Funny Prime Minister:

For goodness sake, Mr Prime Minister Najib, you are getting funnier by the day. I thought only clowns are funny, they like to talk nonsense a lot to make people laugh and that's about it, no further action required of them. Are you, Mr PM, going the way of the clown?

You have control over all the print media and they are churning out a lot of glorifying news about your capabilities — 1 Malaysia Concept, New Economic Model (NEM), National Key Result Areas (NKRA), Key Performance Indicators (KPI), efficiency, excellence, meritocracy, bla bla bla — almost everyday and you still find it not sufficient? Do you really need to publish an expensive book to explain further because the public is still laughing from reading what your clown media are churning out?

I dont know the writer but the Malaysian Insider does, perhaps.

Geng Diskopi Selar Tindakan Universiti Malaya

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 09:03 AM PDT

Geng Diskopi menyelar tindakan Universiti Malaya sekeras-kerasnya.

Catch the terrorist! Use the ISA! Tony Pua gets M16 bullet in the mail

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 08:33 AM PDT

PJ Utara MP Tony Pua received a live bullet in the post yesterday afternoon. The letter, bearing a Johor postmark and mailed to his office in Damansara Utama, was opened by his office assistant about 4.30pm.

The police seem to be know how to use ISA to catch terrorists or other 'terrorists' like RPK and politicians but the they can't seem to catch those who throw Molotov cocktails into homes and sending bullets as threats!

I wonder why! Not intelligent enough, I guess!

Many of you know Antares of Magickriver as the blogger extraordinaire. But did you know that he is also artistically gifted in many other areas including music, art and vocals?

In April 1986, Antares released a limited-edition cassette titled 2nd Coming to celebrate the return of Halley's Comet and to gratify his libidinous addiction to musical extemporization.

He recorded, mixed and produced his first two albums on my own initiative financed by his own savings. The first album sold pretty well, even if no record company was interested in helping him distribute it. From the sales, be bought buy studio time (at a generous discount, thanks to Rediffusion!) to record 2nd Coming on state-of-the-art, 16-track, 2-inch analog tape.

Now, Antares is about to reissue his 1986 solo album, 2nd Coming, on CD - with a brand new master digitally enhanced by Deejay Sanuk aka Daniel Schwörer, an ace Swiss audio engineer and producer residing in Koh Samui.

If you want to know more about the album CLICK HERE and to listen to sample tracks, PLEASE CLICK HERE. Select the first item, "Terminal Hierophantiasis." Note that the mp3 version featured here has not been digitally enhanced.

Personally, I have seen Antares tinker on my piano in my home and have two of his albums. His talent is simply awesome and his creativity is most unusual as he is able to marry cultural and fusion elements most artistically. Considering that he was not musically trained, I find his compositions and chord progressions most unusual and almost surreal. It is such a pity that due to his preference for his lifestyle, he is not in the thick of the music scene in Malaysia. Certainly, few can come close to his talent and passion for what his music.

Please support him by putting in your orders early by :

a) transferring RM25 into either Maybank savings account #112071252584 or Public Bank savings account #4468026936;

b) depositing USD10/€8 into his PayPal account c/o

Please don't forget to email your postal address. The price includes postage. You will be notified when the CDs are posted.

My family and I wish Antares the very best in this music venture. My two boys and I dream of jamming with him one day but then again, Antares is in a super-duper class of his own!!

Syabas, Antares!!!

Rose and Kha-Ye buds (by Min Thu Wun)

When I return from the fields
I give her Kha-Ye buds,
Cause she wanted to wear in her hair.
This morning, when I saw her
There were roses in her hair
She was beautiful and honourable.

"Nota Terakhir" Teoh Satu Rekaan Oleh Peguam Negara

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 04:06 AM PDT

Nota akhir: Keluarga nafi tulisan, tandatangan Teoh

Malaysia not very ‘happy’; many ‘struggling’

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 10:39 PM PDT

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 03:33 AM PDT

My eyes, still misty from watching the Derek Redmond video four times (you can view it in my previous post HERE), started tearing again when I read the Malaysiakini report HERE about how the family of Teoh Beng Hock expressed "dissatisfaction, outrage, bewilderment and disappointment" with the attorney-general for tendering a mystery note as evidence at the tail end of the inquest into the death of the political aide.

Teoh's family released a strongly worded statement to reporters from their home in Malacca which said the A-G's decision was highly suspicious and urged the government to employ a handwriting expert to verify the veracity of the note.

Excerpt from the Malaysiakini report:

"The A-G does not see our pain. For over a year, we've had to travel from Malacca to Shah Alam to attend the inquest," the statement said.

"If the inquest has to be restarted, how are we, as a family, to suffer through this again? Is the A-G intentionally trying to stop us from living normal lives?"

The family said the A-G had admitted that his office had been in possession of the note since October last year and queried why the family, nor their lawyer, were consulted about it.

"We attended the inquest throughout the year. Why didn't they seek our help? The A-G is merely making excuses," the statement said.

Teoh's family also pointed out that the AG had contradicted himself by suggesting there were not enough experts to allay doubts over the note because he had enough time to do so, given that his office was in possession of the document since October last year.

The family also honed in on the A-G's claim that there was no sample for comparison to the handwritten note in Chinese and that he had doubts on its veracity.

"So, what made him change his mind?" the family asked.

The family also reiterated claims that the handwriting and signature on the note was different from Beng Hock's.

On Aug 9, the A-G's Chambers tried to tender a mystery note for the coroner hearing the inquest into the political aide's death to consider, prompting outcry from the family's lawyers.

The lawyers argued that had the document been unveiled earlier, it would have dramatically changed the course of the questions asked to about 30 witnesses called so far.

However, the A-G's Chambers has denied that it had been suppressing evidence, claiming that the document would only be tendered once it was satisfied about its authenticity.

It has been more than one year since TBH's death. One wonders how the authorities concerned need more than a year to verify its authenticity and how this purported finding has been kept under the lid for so long! Many bloggers and other writers have written much about this new development.

I am not going to repeat what they have so eloquently expressed. However, I just want those parties concerned to truly search their hearts (if they still have one that can feel and can respond to their conscience) as they sleep tonight.

Are they inhuman and blind to the pain of TBH's family? Aren't they in touch with their conscience and their Maker?

The more one lies, the greater the tendency to flounder and then their lying shows up most disgracefully.

It is painful for me to see how in this land, it seems that evil ones escape scot-free. Those who do wrong are rewarded with HEROIC titles while the innocent and the honest end up with nothing. Those who write from their hearts such as Helen Ang get threats and others who hold candles are arrested.

It baffles me as to how some can easily harvest hundreds millions of ringgit in commissions/kickbacks still have an 'intact' life, including those who use public funds to enjoy overseas vacations with their families and even their maids!!

It took years for the authorities to investigate the PKFZ scandal and even then only ONE person has been detained. It seems so bizarre that this is like a topsy-turvy world in which we live where the layman works laboriously to make ends meet in an economy that is going downhill.

And now, the death of ONE man cannot be avenged while it appears that some could be throwing spanners in the works instead of getting to the bottom of the case.

Are they inhuman and blind to the pain and outrage that we feel? Do they know how to feel any more? Do they know what is real, true, honorable, of value and virtue?

Sighs.....May the Almighty prick their conscience and allow them no rest till they tell nothing but the truth!

421 million Indian population live in poverty

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 03:12 AM PDT

There are 421 million who people who are living in poverty in eight north India states of Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal according to recent Oxford's Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) – more than in the poorest 26 African countries combined (421M).

It doesn't mean that India is poorer than those African nations (with many of them living in 'extreme' poverty) – the MPI is a bit complicated to begin with – but it does reflect the sad fact behind the world's second most populated country.

I remember watching a heart-wrenching Chinese documentary, where some villagers from rural China are all-smile after selling their produce for RMB4000 (~USD590), the annual income for the entire village of about 100 households. Still, it's not disastrous for a farming community where most basic needs are self sustainable, I can only imagine things being worse in some other places.

It is often easy to throw in the towel when things go wrong. Some choose to abandon a sinking ship rather than to bail out the water. It is the same in the political landscape. We see MPs leaving their party for what they claim is greener pastures all in the name of the good of the nation or so they say.

Remaining true to their calling is no easy task. As sojourners travelling along a long and winding road, many face all kinds of challenges, some life-threatening like what happened in Tony Pua's case and others may be more of emotional turbulence. Whatever the case, perseverance is the key.

This evening, while I was trying to select a topic for blogging, I saw the Facebook update of a friend (M. F. Christopher) featuring a video clip of Derek Redmond. I had a real teary reaction and when my boy heard me sniffing away, he stood beside me and together we watched the end of that touching video clip taken at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

According to Wikipedia, Derek Anthony Redmond (born 3 September 1965, in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, England) is a retired British athlete. During his career, he held the British record for the 400 metres sprint, and won gold medals in the 4x400 metres relay at the World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

However his career was blighted by a series of injuries, and he is best remembered for his performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona where he tore his hamstring in the 400 metres semi-final but fought through the pain and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. The incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history, having been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee's 'Celebrate Humanity' videos and been used in advertisements by Visa as an illustration of the Olympic spirit and featured in Nike's "Courage" commercials in 2008.

Be inspired by this video clip. Perseverance is the key and we must never give up no matter how dark the day! Take care and have a lovely evening. Next post will be up just after dinner. Cheers!

Umno-BN Didakwa Cuba Ulangi Operasi Lalang 1987 (SK)

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 02:35 AM PDT

So, who is Jho Low, really?

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 02:04 AM PDT

Last July, a mysterious name 'Jho Low' popped up in the inner circle list of newly-appointed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak compiled by Singapore's Straits Times, arousing curiosity.

"Who is this 'Joe' Low?" many people might have asked after reading the brief introduction that described him as the "key architect" of the Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA), a sovereign wealth fund under the state.

NONEHowever, a year later, Low has probably become Malaysia's biggest celebrity after reports about his extravagant partying with controversial Hollywood actress Paris Hilton (right) hit the front pages of newspapers, local and around the world.

His real name is Low Taek Jho, commonly known as Jho or 'Joe' Low, and he is a 28-year-old millionaire born in Penang, and the third son of Penang tycoon Larry Low.

NONEChecks by Malaysiakini showed that Low was already a significant figure in local business circles two years ago as a result of his strong links with Middle East investors.

Apart from TIA, which is now morphed into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), he played a significant role in UBG Bhd, which is owned by the family of Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud (left).

Appointed director at 26

The takeover of UBG Bhd by Saudi Arabian company PetroSaudi International Ltd seven months ago sparked another round of speculation over Low's wide influence.

PetroSaudi had in May last year formed a joint venture with 1MDB to invest US$2.5 billion into the energy sector. Some saw PetroSaudi's takeover of UBG as being linked to the 1MDB joint venture.

The Star in its report on April 8 said that all these business ventures did involve Low, and referred it to the 'J Low' factor. However, PetroSaudi later denied that the UBG Bhd deal was connected to its cooperation with 1MDB.

Low was appointed as a non-executive director on UBG Bhd's board in September 2008 when he was only 26 years old. He was then the representative for Abu Dhabi-Kuwait-Malaysia Investment Corp (ADKMIC), a consortium formed by influential Middle East investors.

The consortium, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Majestic Masterpiece Sdn Bhd, purchased 53 percent of UBG Bhd shares and acquired two construction companies – Putrajaya Perdana Bhd and Loh & Loh Corp Bhd – after hiving off its interests in RHB Bank.

NONEMeanwhile, the stake held by original controlling shareholder, the Taib family through their flagship company Cahaya Mata Sarawak Bhd, was reduced to 32 percent.

Together with Low, the young mover-and-shaker's best friend Yousef Al Otaiba (right), who is currently the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ambassador to the United States, also sat on the board of directors.

Middle East investors roped in

Not surprisingly, Low's role in TIA and 1MDB raised eyebrows. When Najib took power last year, TIA was turned into a federal entity and was renamed 1MDB.

In an interview with the local press, 1MDB chief executive officer Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi said the idea of TIA was mooted by the Agong and Terengganu Sultan Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and that it was modelled after Abu Dhabi's investment arm, Mubadala Development Company.

Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE, is among the cities which Low is active in and where he has a number of close friends – many of whom from the days when he was at Wharton Business School in the US – including Yousef, the son of UAE's first oil minister. Low is presently relocating his business headquarters there.

In an interview with the Star last week, Low revealed that he was invited by the sultan to help set up TIA last year, because of his good relationship with Middle East investors and knowledge in setting up sovereign wealth funds.

azlanHowever, the young millionaire stressed that he played no role after the authority was federalised.

He has also denied an accusation by PKR that he had been awarded the Sungai Besi air base redevelopment project, which acquired 195ha of prize land from the government.

The redevelopment project is a joint venture between 1MDB and another Middle East investor, Qatar Investment Authority (QIA).

After it was federalised, 1MDB has roped in a slew of Middle East investors, including QIA, PetroSaudi and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar).

According to 1MDB's website, Low is not a member of its board of advisers and directors or with its senior management.

But it is undeniable that 1MDB's joint ventures with Middle East investors has Low's fingerprints all over them.
