It was rather coincidental that just as I was telling Stephen about the common, black, seven-inch millipedes that one could find on Penang Hill or the Bukit Mertajam Hill, that we came across this uncommon yellow-striped millipede curled up on a tree trunk along the BM Hill track.

Selamat Datang Sdr Rafizi ke Dunia Blog!

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 09:46 AM PDT

Cindy glanced nervously at the clock on the kitchen wall. Five minutes before midnight.

"They should be home any time now," she thought as she put the finishing touches on the chocolate cake she was frosting. It was the first time in her 12 years she had tried to make a cake from scratch, and to be honest, it wasn't exactly an aesthetic triumph. The cake was . . . well, lumpy. And the frosting was bitter, as if she had run out of sugar or something. Which, of course, she had.

And then there was the way the kitchen looked. Imagine a huge blender filled with all the fixings for chocolate cake -- including the requisite bowls, pans and utensils. Now imagine that the blender is turned on. High speed. With the lid off. Do you get the idea?

But Cindy wasn't thinking about the mess. She had created something, a veritable phoenix of flour and sugar rising out of the kitchen clutter. She was anxious for her parents to return home from their date so she could present her anniversary gift to them. She turned off the kitchen lights and waited excitedly in the darkness. When at last she saw the flash of the car headlights, she positioned herself in the kitchen doorway. By the time she heard the key sliding into the front door, she was THIS CLOSE to exploding.

Her parents tried to slip in quietly, but Cindy would have none of that. She flipped on the lights dramatically and trumpeted: "Ta-daaa!" She gestured grandly toward the kitchen table, where a slightly off-balance two-layer chocolate cake awaited their inspection.

But her mother's eyes never made it all the way to the table. "Just look at this mess!" she moaned. "How many times have I talked to you about cleaning up after yourself?"

"But Mom, I was only..."

"I should make you clean this up right now, but I'm too tired to stay up with you to make sure you get it done right," her mother said. "So you'll do it first thing in the morning."

"Honey," Cindy's father interjected gently, "take a look at the table."

"I know -- it's a mess," his wife said coldly. "The whole kitchen is a disaster. I can't stand to look at it." She stormed up the stairs and into her room, slamming the door shut behind her.

For a few moments Cindy and her father stood silently, neither one knowing what to say. At last she looked up at him, her eyes moist and red. "She never saw the cake," she said.

Unfortunately, Cindy's mother isn't the only parent who suffers from Situational Timbercular Glaucoma -- the occasional inability to see the forest for the trees. From time to time we all allow ourselves to be blinded to issues of long-term significance by Stuff That Seems Awfully Important Right Now -- but isn't. Muddy shoes, lost lunch money and messy kitchens are troublesome, and they deserve their place among life's frustrations. But what's a little mud -- even on new carpet -- compared to a child's self- esteem? Is a lost dollar more valuable than a youngster's emerging dignity? And while kitchen sanitation is important, is it worth the sacrifice of tender feelings and relationships?

I'm not saying that our children don't need to learn responsibility, or to occasionally suffer the painful consequences of their own bad choices. Those lessons are vital, and need to be carefully taught. But as parents, we must never forget that we're not just teaching lessons -- we're teaching children. That means there are times when we really need to see the mess in the kitchen.

And times when we only need to see the cake.

In Indian Kashmir: Muslims pressure Sikhs to convert or leave

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 09:10 AM PDT

It is a long-standing practice in Islamic warfare to invite the targeted population to convert before attacking. Indeed, it goes back to Muhammad himself:

"When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. ... If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them...." (Sahih Muslim 19.4294)

Meanwhile, jihadist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani is urging the Sikhs to relax and ignore the letters. Easier said than done. More on this story : "Kashmir: Islamic groups pressuring Sikhs to convert", by Nirmala Carvalho for AsiaNews, August 20:

Srinagar (AsiaNews) - Some Sikhs living in Kashmir have received anonymous letters recently, urging them to "embrace Islam, join the protests against civilian killings or pack up and leave the Valley." In one letter, the anonymous writer said, "Since you are benefitting from the joys here, why can't you share the grief and sorrow of Kashmiris as well? We know you are afraid of bullets" but "hold protests inside your gurdwaras [Sikh temples] or leave."

For decades, Pakistan and India have been at loggerheads over the mountainous region. The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir now occupies the eastern half of the territory. For years, it has been the scene of a Muslim insurgency dedicated to the reunification of the greater Kashmir region under Pakistani rule. Yesterday, hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani tried to reassure Kashmir Sikhs. He told them to ignore the letters, and not feel threatened....

Like I have said before and many times over that tolerance is a one way street in Muslim majority countries and the funny thing in this case, is that, this part of the world belongs to Hindu India historically. The rest being artificial creations through Muslim conquests and terror - edit Jihad Watch

Sometimes, things don't happen the way we hope......

When I fall in love, it will be forever....that is what I believed when I was a little girl and still believe as one approaching my sunset years. However, some things are not meant to be for some people. One may have found the man/woman of her dreams and because of shortcomings or circumstances beyond their control, may also lose that person...

Regardless, sentimental me believes that once we fall in love with someone, we never ever stop loving that person for the rest of our lives.

That is why I always tell my older son never to fall in love easily and to be careful when losing his heart to a girl and to only fall in love if he knows for sure she is the one. Impossible for teenagers but you never know....(I started dating my husband when I was 16!!!)

In 2008, I saw a photo of my boy with a university course mate. They are both music majors - my son is majoring in violin and she is a voice major. My sixth sense told me that she is a very good girl and I asked him if he had any interest in her. And he laughed it off for he was with another girl then...

Months later, after he broke up with that girl, he called me and told me that he was with that girl.

Two months ago, they broke up. And my heart broke into a million pieces.

Honestly, I do not know who cried the most - my son or me :-). And I am still crying so much as I write this post.

The reason for the break up was that she was going to Japan for her studies and would be graduating soon. At that time, my boy was busy with his band and did not spend enough time to give her the attention she deserved or needed so things changed... Also, in his free time, DOTA was a main obstacle standing between the two of them. Sighs.

At one morning, he called me up to tell me that it was over.

I tell you, the world came to a standstill that night and things have never been the same again. We all feel as though we have lost a part of our family. My son and my whole family love her so much and always miss her.

She comes from such a lovely family and in 2008, her parents came all the way from Kelantan for my 25th wedding anniversary. Politically too, her parents and I are from the same camp :-).

My son told me that he will wait for her even if it takes ten years....I know how much he loves her and we all do too!

I still keep in touch with her very often via FB or Skype and will always love her and hope and pray for a miracle that perhaps the two of them will be together again. That is why I put up my post on GIVE IT WINGS.

The point that I want to make in this post is simple. When we have someone in our lives, we must treasure that person and not take him/her for granted. I just watched her graduation concert videos and she is spectacular to say the least and I know she will become famous one day!

Yes, my son lost her. A very big loss indeed. But those 1 year ten months or was it 1 year months a beautiful period for all of us. How I wish I could turn the clock back...

Love is like a has to be nurtured, watered with love, attention, tender loving care, tolerance and understanding. Without all that, love will wither away....

I know I love to put up jokes about men and women and laugh over them but the truth is, if we have someone in our lives, we really have to cherish, treasure, honor and love that person for always.

Love never dies. We can never stop loving someone once we lose our heart to them.

And whoever you are with, whoever you have married or whoever you love, really love them with all you have, who you are, all you can give.

Some things are not meant to be...but we can treasure the memories, the moments and know that deep in our never dies and will live on...I know we will always love her.

Here she is singing one of my FAVOURITE songs by Edith Piaf : La Vie En Rose in her graduation concert last week.

We love you, dearie!! And we are so proud of you...Sometimes, things are not meant to be but we can always hope for miracles while treasuring those memories. You have a very special place in our hearts and we will always love you!!!

UMNO Bikin Karpal Jadi Keliru Terhadap Islam

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 07:45 AM PDT

Kenyataan Karpal tolak hukum hudud pandangan peribadi, kata Nik Aziz

— Bernama

Karpal Cadang Perogol Kanak-kanak Dihukum Mati

Malaya Burma Star ( KARIM GHANI)

Malaya Burma Star ( KARIM GHANI)

Karim Ghani was born in Sodugudi, Ilayangudi, a politician in South-East Asia of Indian origin Karim Ghani. Before the Second World War Karim Ghani was a parliamentary secretary in Burma under Dr. Ba Maw. During World War II, Ghani came to be the Minister FOR STATE IN Subhas Bose's Azad Hind government and was in Malaya. He was also the manager of "The Muslim Publishing House", the editor of the Malayasian Tamil daily Malayan Nanban, as well as the editor of the Malay edition Dawn, under the name Sinaran. Ghani was involved also involved with the Muslim League and was the president of the All Malaya Muslim Missionary Society (AMMMS) and an official in several other organizations. After the end pf World War II, Ghani was involved in South-East Asian Muslim politics, most notably being involved in the Maria Hertogh riots in Singapore in 1950.

Maria Hertogh Riots

The Maria Hertogh riots or Natrah riots started on 11 December 1950 in Singapore, following the court decision to give the custody of Maria Hertogh (or Bertha Hertogh), then 13, to her biological Dutch Catholic parents after she had been raised as a Muslim under the care of Aminah binte Mohamed, whom she regarded as her mother. The riots lasted till noon on 13 December, with 18 killed, 173 injured and many properties damaged – the worst incident of its kind ever witnessed in Singapore. The court decision in August 1950 and the widespread news coverage of the legal battle for custody had evoked widespread agitations in the Malayan and South-East Asian Muslim population who regarded Maria as a follower of the Muslim faith and came to interpret press coverage as portraying Maria as a Christia. nAn organization calling itself the Nadra Action Committee was formally constituted under the leadership of Karim Ghani. This extreme organization solicited support among local Muslims by distributing free copies of its newspaper, the Dawn (not the Dawn, an English paper published in Pakistan). Karim Ghani had also made an open speech at the Sultan Mosque on 8 December in which he mentioned jihad as a final resort. Ghani's comments were followed by widespread riots and violence beginning on 11 December and continued till the 13th. In total, 18 people were killed, among whom were seven Europeans or Eurasians, two police officers, and nine rioters shot by the police or military, 173 were injured, many of them seriously, 119 vehicles were damaged, and at least two buildings were set on fire. Subsequently, two weeks of 24-hour curfew were imposed, and it was a long time before complete law and order was re-established.

After the riot, the police set up a special investigation unit which detained 778 people, among them Karim Ghani, who was arrested along with several members of the Nadra Action Committee and held at the detention camp on Saint John's Island for 15 months under Emergency Regulation 20 for his part in the riots before being released on grounds of poor health.

Azad Hind- Free India , this was the slogan used by the freedom fighters of India.

Karim Ghany is alleged to have pioneered the first Jawi Scripted Malay newspaper in Malaya. He was a prolific writer who could write in English, malay, jawi, arabic, urdu and tamil.

Karim also started the first Tamil newspaper, The Malaya Nanban.

Maria was represented by David Marshal a prominent lawyer from Singapore who in his later years had to remark, " if this case would have been heard in any other circumstances the verdict would have been otherwise" He was referering to the last hurrah of the British who wanted to salvage their christian pride by admonishing the weak malay muslim populace.

In the riots that followed many people were killed and many a muslims who abetted the rioters were charged. Among them were many Tamil Muslim leaders who were sentenced to be hanged. These Tamil Muslim traders were the Islamic icons for the newly independent Malaya.

Karim Ghany was a Tamil Muslim (modern day Tamil Nadu in the south of India).

He was given an ultimatum by the British government, that he was to be banished to a country of his choice. He chose Pakistan and he died a devastated man in the newly formed Islamic country.

M'sia ranks 37th, Finland (a country of extremes) is top - Newsweek (or News Weak)

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 10:25 AM PDT

Helsinki, capital of Finland

Newsweek ranks Malaysia as the world's 37th best country and among the best in Asia, just below Japan (9) and Singapore (20) in terms of education and economic dynamism. Top three are Finland, Switzerland and Sweden (here).

I dont know how precise Newsweek's ratings are. Obviously, some Finns didn't agree with it at all, citing the domestic and social problems as criteria to be taken into consideration.

Malaysia is also listed as the eighth best in education among the upper middle-income countries. Singapore ranks top in the economic dynamism category. Newsweek attributed it to Singapore's 'manageable' size.

The Guardian said, for a country of extremes, Finland doesnt deserve such a rating. "But what about suicides, depression, alcoholism and our cold, dark winters?" many Finns protested yesterday after the announcement by the magazine (here).

"But gloating does not come naturally to us, even though Finland has topped the OECD global education assessment three times in a row. There is an underside to the educational excellence. Two bloody school massacres, in 2007 and 2008, claimed 20 lives," it added.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tops the ranking of the world's best leader. Read the article 'India The Best Place To Fly A Kite...' by Times of India.

Nama Guan Eng di Khutbah: Umno Ahmad Zahid dah bankrup idea? Laporan polis telah dibuat!

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 05:20 AM PDT

I am no traitor, Nurul tells the ‘patriot’

Free Malaysia Today

By Ken Vin Lek FRI, 20 AUG 2010 14:10

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR's Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has denied committing treachery as alleged by Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The minister had lambasted the opposition politician over her statements regarding Malaysia's submarines, which were published in the Indonesian newspaper, Kompas.

He claimed that Nurul, the daughter of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, had tarnished the nation's image and put its security at risk.

However, Nurul begged to differ.

Speaking to FMT, she said the label "national traitor" was more befitting for a minister who abused his power and indulged in corruption.

"If it is true that the minister is a patriot, why then is he not supporting the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) probe on the commission paid to Perimekar Sdn Bhd for the purchase of the Scorpene submarines as stated by the Dewan Rakyat speaker on July 2.

"Is it not the trait of a true traitor who uses public coffers to pay the high costs for the submarine to the government's 'golden boy' (Abdul Razak Baginda) consulting company and to purchase equipment or the multiplied cost of projects to fill the pockets of the 'chosen ones'?" she asked.

Nurul said her comments which appeared in Kompas were based on the official answer given by the defence minister on March 17 in the Dewan Rakyat about one of the submarines not being able to dive because of technical problems.

'I am ready to be investigated'

Despite the Royal Malaysian Navy having filed a police report against her, Nurul stood by her statements.

"I am ready to be investigated and I hope that the investigations will bring to light other issues relating to the purchase of the submarines," she said.

In a statement yesterday, Nurul also pointed out that the problems regarding the submarine were common knowledge.

"In light of the image and national security of the country which have been apparently affected by my statement, I would like to bring up a statement made by the minister on the very same day who said that technical problems like this are also faced by many other countries all over the world.

"If this information regarding the status of submarines is available openly all over the world, where is the rationale with regards to my statement threatening national security?" she said.

Nurul also quoted an Aug 6 Bernama article, which revealed that the navy was only conducting its integrated navy exercise once, instead of three times, a year in order to save cost.

According to her, this was a greater threat to national security.

"What would be the reaction of the enemies if they found out that the navy only performs such training once a year. I fear for the country which has wide coastal areas to only conduct such tests only once a year," she said.

In the interview with the Indonesian daily, Nurul was asked to  comment on the submarine scandal being investigated by the French authorities and was quoted as saying, "The submarine purchased by the Malaysian government cannot dive and the weaponry which was purchased has clearly expired."

The alleged corruption in the sales of the two Scorpene submarines purchased by Malaysia from the French shipbuilder DCN is currently being probed by French judicial officials.

The case was opened at the request of Malaysian rights group Suaram, which alleged that DCN paid a commission of 114 million euros (RM635 million) Perimekar Sdn Bhd, which is owned by Abdul Razak Baginda, a close associate of the Prime Minister, Najib Razak.

Zahid previously said there was no need for any investigations to be carried out by the MACC citing that the deal was approved by the Finance Ministry and was in accordance with the procurement procedures despite the revelation of the hefty sum of commission paid to Perimekar.

To all women: On behalf of all men I would like to clarify a few points:

* The floor is considered an acceptable clothing storage location.
* Never ask me to purchase feminine products. Assume that I will come home with the wrong thing.
* When watching TV hugging is always fine because I can still see the screen. Kissing should only be done during timeouts and commercials. Questions should also be limited to this period as you stand a much better chance of getting an immediate response.
* When we are watching your show and I change the channels during a commercial do not hassle me that they are over to change the channel back. I always know when the timing is right. Also, when we are channel surfing do not ask me to go back, there was a good reason why I skipped it.
* If you need help with the laundry, I am more than willing to carry it from the bedroom to the washer. In my mind this is half the chore and I am now free to return to the couch.
* If I mention that a male friend of mine is allowed to do something it is not necessary for you to call his wife/girlfriend to discuss it.
* If you don't like the way I am driving close your eyes. And I would appreciate it if you would refrain from making that reverse inhaling alarmed noise. I haven't hit anything yet and if I do it will be your fault.
* I go clothes shopping to buy, never to look.
* Just tell me what you want me to wear before I get dressed. And remember that this takes me less than ten minutes no matter what the occasion is. After all I am getting dressed, not getting ready.
* Don't ask me if I prefer one outfit over another or if a certain accessory should be worn or not. I consider this a no win situation and would rather just wait for you to get dressed while watching TV.
* If you want me to put the seat down when I am finished then you should leave the seat up when you are finished. It's only fair. And stop giving me a hard time about missing the bowl. What do you expect from an organ that has a brain of its own.
* I will cook anything as long as it is on the BBQ.
* Yelling to me across the house sounds exactly like stadium crowd background noise to me. I am not ignoring you.

Thank you for your understanding,
From all men.
