Awasi Islamic Fashion Show

Ahli parlimen Belanda menghina Al-Quran melalui filem pendeknya, 'Fitna',

Salman Rushdi menghina Nabi melalui tulisannya,

Kini hanya perlukan orang Islam sendiri.

JANGAN SAMPAI MALAYSIA DITUDUH MENGHINA ISLAM

-zaharuddin.net

Vote PR into Putrajaya! Malay special rights will still be protected - always!!

Nurul Izzah: While the Parliament is still in session, I call upon the Prime Minister to turn his speech into action within 30 days.
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — Nurul Izzah Anwar has challenged Datuk Seri Najib Razak to turn his Umno assembly speech into action, or risk becoming a daydreamer like the Malay folklore character Mat Jenin and not the legendary warrior Hang Tuah.
The Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmaker demanded today that Najib repeal undemocratic laws, ensure freedom of the press and to conduct fair elections within the next 30 days.
Citing the two iconic Malay cultural characters Najib had referenced himself during the Umno assembly, she said the prime minister now had the chance to prove that he possessed Hang Tuah's courage and sense of fair play or follow in Mat Jenin's "delusional footsteps".
"While the Parliament is still in session, I call upon the Prime Minister to turn his speech into action within 30 days," Nurul Izzah said in a press statement.
She said Najib's success in repealing anti-democratic laws and safeguarding freedom of the press as well as free elections will serve as "benchmarks" for Umno's legitimacy and Najib's own moral leadership.
The Lembah Pantai MP urged the prime minister to repeal all anti-democratic laws to prove that he believed Malay rights were so tightly locked in the Constitution that they could be not be easily repealed.
"The Prime Minister had said, 'The Malay Rights are tightly locked with a key and enshrined in the Constitution'. Therefore in Parliament, the Prime Minister must repeal all anti-democratic laws such as the ISA (Internal Security Act), AUKU (Universities and University Colleges Act), and the PPPA (Printing Presses and Publications Act), which is no longer needed to protect those rights," she said.
Nurul Izzah added that if Malay special rights were protected by the Council of Rulers, as Najib has stressed, they would continue to be upheld even if PR manages to seize Putrajaya one day.
"Doesn't Umno trust in the Malay Ruler's wisdom and judgment to hold the key for all Malaysians?" she said.
Nurul Izzah also urged Najib to guarantee freedom of the press in line with his call to Malays to face a "competition of the minds" as this would enable the creation of an informed society.
"Wouldn't this nurture the people's mind and soul to face the modern era?" she asked.
Since Malays can "compete with the best", the prime minister should also take measures to ensure free and fair elections, Nurul Izzah added. She said Najib should follow in the footsteps of Hang Tuah — whom the prime minister referenced several times in his speeches - who chose to fight fairly on a level playing field.
In his speech last Thursday and Saturday, Najib stressed that it was critical for Malays to prepare themselves for the coming era.
"Instead of obsessing about rights, the 21st century Malay should instead prepare himself to utilise those rights. What is the use of quotas, reserves and permits if all are wasted?" he had said. "What use is opportunity if sacrificed for short-term gain?"
"Like it or not, the Malays of this century should face reality to seize success," Najib continued.

The ink of the scholar is holier than the blood of the martyr. The Islamic Review, Vol. 22 (1934), p. 105, edited by Khwajah Kamal al-Din

He who has been a ruler over (ten people) will be brought shackled on the Day of Resurrection_

 1. until the justice (by which he ruled) loosens his chains
 2. or tyranny brings him to destruction. Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1037

It is better for a leader to make a mistake in forgiving than to make a mistake in punishing. Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1011

People, beware of injustice, for injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment. Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, #5798, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #2447.

Seven kinds of people will be sheltered under the shade of God on the Day of Judgment…They are:

 1. a just ruler,
 2. a young man who passed his youth in the worship and service of God…
 3. one whose heart is attached to the mosque…
 4. two people who love each other for the sake of God…
 5. a man who is invited to sin…but declines, saying 'I fear God'…
 6. one who spends his charity in secret, without making a show…
 7. and one who remembers God in solitude so that his eyes overflow.

The ink of scholars will be weighed in the scale with the blood of martyrs. As quoted in Knowledge of God in Classical Sufism : Foundations of Islamic Mystical Theology (2004) by John Renard

The ink of scholars (used in writing) is weighed on the Day of Judgement with the blood of martyrs and the ink of scholars out-weighs the blood of martyrs. As quoted in Al-Jaami' al-Saghîr by Imam al-Suyuti, where it is declared a "weak Hadith".

All doings are built on intentions, and every man will be rewarded or punished ( for his work) according to his intention. Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim

Kindness is a mark of faith, and whoever has not kindness has not faith. As quoted in Al-Islam‎ (1926) by Khwajah Kamal al-Din, p. 47

Variant translation: Kindness is a mark of faith, and whoever hath not kindness hath not faith. As quoted in Prabuddha Bharata : or Awakened India, Vol. 44 (1939) published by Advaita Ashrama, p. 84

A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that. Bukhari 4:538 This is an extraordinary hadith, because following the Sunnah of Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) , prostitutes can be extremely despised figures among most Muslims, yet it expresses the idea that even someone working in one of the most despised of professions, in showing mercy to an animal, can merit the forgiveness of Allah, and the wise.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Verily, Allah has revealed to me that you should adopt humility. So that no one may wrong another and no one may be disdainful and haughty towards another." Sahih Bukhari 8:73:47

Avoid cruelty and injustice for, on the Day of Judgment, the same will turn into several darknesses; and guard yourselves against miserliness; for this has ruined nations who lived before you. Riyadh-us-Salaheen, Hadith 203

Do not turn away a poor man…even if all you can give is half a date. If you love the poor and bring them near you…God will bring you near Him on the Day of Resurrection. Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1376

(Each one) of you should save himself from the fire by giving even half of a date (in charity). And if you do not find a half date, then (by saying) a pleasant word (to your brethren). Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadith 394

Fear Allah and treat your children [small or grown] fairly (with equal justice). Al-Bukhari and Muslim

"God does not judge you according to your bodies and appearances, but He looks into your hearts and observes your deeds."
[The man asked] "Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man said. "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man further said, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man asked for the fourth time, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your father." Sahih al-Bukhari, 8:2

[Video] John Howard Pula Dibaling Dengan Kasut

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 07:31 AM PDT

Shoes thrown at Howard during Q&A

Former prime minister John Howard has had shoes thrown at him during an episode of the ABC's Q and A.

Mr Howard had just finished answering questions about the Iraq war when the protester struck.

''That is for Iraqi dead,'' the man appeared to shout at Mr Howard as he threw two shoes at the former prime minister.

A female audience member then shouted: ''You've got blood on your hands'', before walking out of the studio.

The man was led out by ABC staff.

Mr Howard appeared to take the incident in his stride. "It's all right, don't worry. Forget it, forget it. Relax," he said.

An audience member then told Mr Howard "if that's all they've got to throw at you, you've got nothing to worry about".

The incident had echoes of an infamous incident when shoes were thrown at former US president George Bush during a trip to Iraq in 2008.

Mr Howard was a strong advocate of the US-led invasion of Iraq. -AAP

Communist China is violating the Article 41 of Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Liu Xiaobo

free liu xiao bo protest hongkongExtract from _MKini: China and the modern Kapitans, by Josh Hong

(Communist China's) diplomatic mission should be shrewd enough to avoid being seen as interfering in the autonomy of an organisation in a sovereign country. Such a move would in fact violate Article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961. They may, however, attempt to influence public opinion in their host country by other means.

For instance, the US embassy, instead of making private phone calls to various press rooms in Malaysia with a view to halting an event against the unjustified and illegal war on Iraq in 2003, actually had some Washington-friendly writers and columnists argue its case on its behalf.

When necessary, officials would be dispatched to engage the opponents at public forums. Outstanding social and political elites were even sent on everything-paid-for trips to the US to experience the freedoms enjoyed by the Muslim community there.

One may call it a fine art of propaganda, but any democracy knows full well overt interference almost always ends in a PR disaster. A seasoned diplomat would see his/her career take off with a bit of finesse and subtlety.

Not so for the Chinese embassy in KL. Recently, Su Qiang, a counselor, found himself compelled to express his displeasure with the KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) over a planned forum on the decision of the Norwegian Nobel Institute to confer Liu Xiaobo (left), a prominent Chinese dissident, with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Hint of cold shoulder treatment

It later transpired that the counselor had hinted at cold shoulder treatment should the Civic Rights Committee (CRC), a subordinate group under KLSCAH, pressed ahead with the event.

// <![CDATA[Chai Xi, the Chinese ambassador, dismissed claims of involvement by the embassy. His denial has now put the KLSCAH in a deep dilemma. Would its leaders come out to rebut the ambassador in order to salvage the organisation's good name from being tarnished?
I am rather pessimistic simply because most of those who run the 7,000 or so Chinese clan associations and guilds are businesspeople. With China's growing economic clout and lucrative business opportunities, Malaysia's so-called Chinese community leaders are more likely to trade democracy for contracts and guan xi (connections).

Like it or not, the impression of interference by the Chinese embassy has sunk into the minds of Chinese Malaysians who uphold jealously the ideals of democracy and human rights, as evidenced in the voluminous messages by Facebook users.

To be fair, it is the duty of all diplomatic missions to pay close attention to the views of the local populaces in regard to the countries that they represent, but the way they handle criticisms may differ, and often sharply. It is just unfortunate that the Chinese embassy has been rather tactless in this.

But the incident also exposes the outmoded mentality of the Chinese. For years, Chinese diplomats have treated the Chinese community leaders in Malaysia as if they were Kapitans of the modern days and, by extension, the Chinese Malaysian population as 'overseas compatriots'.

This attitude, while rooted in historical reasons and understandable, fails to take into account the reality that, in tandem with political developments in the country, vast changes have been happening within the Chinese Malaysian community over the past few years.

For one, Charter 08, drafted by Liu Xiaobo and other constitutionalists in China, largely echoes the desires of Malaysians for a liberal, fair and democratic future, to be achieved through peaceful means.

Championing reform, not revolution

If anything, Liu is championing a constitutional reform, not a bloody revolution. Is it really so surprising that his winning the peace prize is a huge boost for Chinese dissidents and even resonates among Chinese Malaysians who value democracy and human rights more than race and nationality?

In the same vein, it is the democratic process in Taiwan that appeals more to the young generation of Chinese Malaysians, just like the increasingly diverse and democratic Indonesia that gives hope to South-East Asia.

Little wonder then that the more the Chinese authorities resort to clamping down on dissent and censoring the media, the more they remind Malaysians of the underhanded tactics by Umno. Mahathir Mohamad's remarks that dictatorship à la China is worthy of emulation only serve to heighten the fear that the Najib government may take a leaf out of his book and impose tighter control.

But the Kapitans, either out of business interests or pro-China sentiments, appear to be oblivious to the winds of change. Pheng Yin Huah, president of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong), and the United Chinese School Committees Association (Dong Zong), together with several others, condemned the peace prize as part of a western conspiracy to 'undermine China's rise as a global power'.

In their view, this 'once prestigious' award was not meant to be given to a 'convicted criminal' working to subvert the Chinese state.

I can easily think of a bunch of prominent Chinese Malaysians who sacrificed their personal freedom in the past decades: Malayans/Malaysians fighting for the country's democracy, they have won the hearts and minds of many.

If one were to apply the logic employed by the Chinese government and the Kapitans, the abovementioned names would appear on the wanted list again and be found guilty as charged.

Neither would the conspiracy theory popularised by Beijing and parroted by the Kapitans stand the test. Let's face it, the peace prize is political in nature, and to label the awarding process as being "politicised" only betrays one's shallow-mindedness by the 'minister of misinformation' who sees it as his divine call to warn the public not to "politicise" certain issues.

So tell me, who else if not Liu that deserved the prize? ]]>

// <![CDATA[If there had been any conspiracy by the Norwegians in acknowledging Martin Luther King Jr (left) in 1964, it only became instrumental in dismantling racial segregation in the United States. Something celebrated worldwide, including in China and Malaysia, no?

Lest we forget, Umno constantly plays up the fear of a conspiracy theory in an attempt to frighten Malaysians from voting for the opposition. Now we know why Mahathir looks up to China and why Umno is in fact a sister party to the Chinese Communist Party!

In short, the modern Kapitans must realise that the Chinese Malaysian community has become more diverse and no longer homogenous, and they should cease to see themselves as the only legitimate voice. Similarly, it is in the interest of the Chinese embassy to prove to Malaysians that it does have the generosity to listen to different opinions, however unpalatable they may be.

I spent a good part of today going through the measurements of the wheelchair I am about to order after receiving feedback from specialists well-versed in customising wheelchairs in the CareCure forum. The specifications are close to being finalized. A big thank you to SCI_OTR and everyone who has given me valuable advice.

There are many factors to be considered to make a wheelchair good fitting and work like it should. The critical areas are seat depth, front and rear seat to floor heights, seat dump, seat back angle and centre of gravity. Each has to be right for me to be comfortably seated for the entire day, and for the chair to be well balanced and easy to push.

Most importantly, I need to get it right because it is going to cost me about US$3,000. The good thing about the Tilite ZRA Series 2 is that it is very adjustable. Minor mistakes in the measurements can be easily rectified. Still, I want it to be done properly in the factory to reduce the hassle of having to do adjustments it when it arrives.

Apart from the wheelchair, I am also ordering the Supracor Stimulite Classic cushion, an extra pair of wheels, spare spokes and inner tubes. The cushion is crucial for preventing pressure sores to the buttocks. The extra set of wheels is cheaper to buy separately than upgrading from the standard wheels provided with the chair.

I hope the Tilite ZRA Series 2 will last longer than the Max Pleasure Synergy that I have been using for the past three years. It will cost JPY25,000 to have the broken cross brace replaced, excluding shipping and other charges. This is equivalent to about RM970. I will just have the fractured tubed welded back later and use it as a spare chair.

Batu Sapi: BN Terima Tamparan Hebat. Majlis Pengumuman Calon Dipulau.

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 05:40 AM PDT

NN perlu siasat punca 'majlis Batu Sapi dipulau'

Edward memperolehi 9,479 undi manakala Chung mendapat 5,771 undi.

Kerusi parlimen Batu Sapi mempunyai 25,582 pengundi yang terdiri daripada 24,047 biasa dan 1,535 undi pos - dengan 15,099 atau 59.02 peratus pengundi bumiputera-Muslim, 689 bukan bumiputera-Muslim (2.69 peratus), 9,737 Cina (38.06 peratus) dan 57 lain-lain kaum (0.22 peratus).

Bekas ahli Usno tinggal BN, isytihar sokong Pakatan

-harakahdaily

How to Recover from Painful Experiences

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 05:23 AM PDT

Here's a very helpful article written by Evette Gardner that helped me greatly when I went through a very tough time in my life last year. I always believe that bad times make us better, not bitter. May this article be a blessing to you and your friends too. Pass it on...Have a lovely evening!

_________________

There are moments in our lives when we've all asked it of ourselves, why does this keep happening to me? I know I've had my fair share of breaking point moments. And it took a good while, along with a string of difficult and painful experiences, for me to realize that a better question to ask myself in the midst of those instances when I feel like I'm at the end of my rope is, okay, so what am I supposed to be learning here that I just haven't been getting?

Because as unconvincing as it may initially seem, pain is never a punishment. We don't experience trials in life because we're bad people. Nor do we suffer hardships because life is unfair.

I'm going to let you in on something which will probably electrify the skeptic in many of you. Life (actually) is always fair - ALWAYS. Your experiences in life are meant to educate you. And this education can sometimes feel extremely demanding. You have never and will never be guaranteed that your experience in life will be easy, but you may rest assured that it will always be in the best interest of your greatest good.

Pain has a useful purpose. Stress has a constructive function. It is a universal truism that you can never really know what you're made of until you finally resign to face those things which scare you most. If you truly knew the extent of the difficult situations life could throw at you, and that you could not only handle but actually excel well beyond, you would be amazed at your own brilliance.

Too often however, we elect to avoid what seems too difficult. We allow our fears to govern our choices and our doubts to determine our actions. These are the blocks we encounter over and over again in life. Every now and then, as we're trucking along, we collide into these obstructions to our spiritual growth (sometimes not even realizing what has hit us). Other times we simply allow ourselves to be turned around when confronted by whatever ominous thing lies before us. We, too regularly, opt to go in circles rather than deal with life's uncertainties. But life's lessons cannot be dodged. One way or another you are going to learn the inexhaustible scope of your strength and power. You will face whatever insights life is trying to show you or you will find yourself stalled on the same redundant track of recurring experiences until you do.

Everything moves in cycles. However you have a choice as to whether you go around on a flat plane or whether you rise through the ascent of spirals into the reality of your fullest potential. When you elect to do the former you confine yourself to a two dimensional playing field where you will discover (oftentimes to your great horror) that all that comes up in your life experience is everything you have been trying to avoid.

Stop trying to run from pain. Stop trying to maneuver your way out of taking what appears to be the more forbidding paths in life, those paths where you can just sense that a whole host of your inner bogeymen are waiting to jump out at you.

Truthfully you would be better off if you simply adopted a life philosophy of immediately tackling any and everything which makes you doubt yourself and the awesome wonders you are capable of because the fact of the matter is, is that it is impossible to get around confronting these misgivings anyway. So you might as well just go ahead and face them up front because the situations you encounter which reflect your insecurities are only going to re-present themselves in more dramatic and more intimidating forms the longer you put off challenging them.

Being an in recovery procrastinator myself I can completely understand the appeal of kicking those little pebbles of fear down the road to be dealt with another day. The problem with this however is, is that those little pebbles are like debts, they're constantly accruing interest.

So the next time you come across that pebble, it won't just be a pebble, it will appear in the form of a rock which you may very well choose to throw down the road once more only to happen upon it later as a boulder. You can go ahead and simply go around this stumbling block in its new form but know that the next time you see your once little pebble, it will then be a little wall. And on and on until you decide to suck it up and own your trepidation.

One of life's many truths is that any erroneous belief you have about yourself or the world around you will eventually take form and "grow legs." It is nothing more than the wrong ideas that you cling to that come to pass as your life's painful experiences. This pain is intended to wake you up from whatever delusion has you rapt. Don't try to walk away from what scares you, don't try to avoid it because it will only end up haunting you. Instead make the conscious decision to consistently do the most courageous thing even in the face of crippling anxiety and self doubt.

There is no other way to reach your greatest promise. You have to walk through the fire, so to speak, in order to realize the truth of your inherent power. But if you cop out, if you yield to the panic of uncertainty you will only invite escalating degrees of suffering into your experience. The only way to recognize the absurdity of your fears is to delve in and explore them. You have to be willing to be present with them if you ever want to expose your fears to be the senseless things that they truly are. And until you do, you will remain confined by the very phobias which you have been trying to escape from.

It's an expression I first heard while watching a Wayne Dyer PBS special (whether or not Dr. Dyer is the original author of this expression, I'm not certain, but it really is a good line). He says, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." Fear is the source of all of life's pains and trials. Yet fear is nothing more than a false perception. The only way to move beyond life's difficulties is to move through your fears. So the million dollar question then becomes, well how do you do this?

The answer is so simple it might actually seem too easy to be legitimate. But Wayne Dyer is absolutely right. You have the power to change the way you're looking at whatever may have you afraid. You have the power to imagine something different as your reality and in so doing reveal the true nature of your fears to be a complete farce. Because once you truly realize that you are the author of your life's script, what is there really to be afraid of? You and only you have the power to determine your life's experience. You are the one who brought your fear to life, and you are the only one who has the power to take it out.

One of the biggest mistakes people often make however is to try to reason their fears away. This is always a losing battle because you cannot use logic to affect something which is itself illogical. In other words, you cannot reason with fear because you cannot apply reason to an emotion based on a false perception which is, at its core, founded on irrationality.

Using this strategy, fear always has the upper hand. Why? Because you can know, logically, what's right and truthful and still not be accepting of the truth. And acceptance is what ultimately shapes your experience. You have to know in your gut what the truth is in order to truly recognize the lie of a false perception.

Fear, being an emotion, doesn't turn on reason, it turns on emotions which conflict with it. And the way you excite these conflicting emotions is to stay present with the experience of your fears until you can feel that something is wrong with the perceptions that fuel them. It is this feeling (that something isn't quite right here) that will turn you off to the lies you've been telling yourself. It is this feeling (that something isn't quite right here) that will spur you to reject the delusions which have enthralled you.

So how do you get past life's painful and difficult experiences? The answer is by facing the fearful perceptions which prompt them. By being present with the experience of a fearful perception you will eventually begin to sense its inherent absurdity. And it is this sense which works to shake your faith in your fearful beliefs. Once this faith is shaken, the fear it pertains to will quickly vanish along with all the painful and trying symptomatic incidents in your life which its viral presence was causing.

So let's break this down point by point.

POINT #1
Both pain and difficulty are products of fear.

POINT #2
The only way to move passed life's painful and difficult experiences is to move through your fears.

POINT #3
You move through your fears by facing them. And you face your fears, not by trying to deny them or distract yourself from them, but by being present with them

POINT #4
When you stay present in the mindset of any negative perception which spurs a fear sooner or later the feeling will arise that something about the thoughts you are engaging, is "off." Reason won't be able to adequately explain what exactly is "off," yet the feeling will grow more pronounced the longer you stay present with these thoughts.

POINT #5
In your being present with your fearful thoughts you will eventually come to a place where you will find it impossible to take these thoughts (and the overall perception built from them) seriously.

POINT #6
Once you have lost confidence in the reality you imagine it can no longer be your reality because your life experience will adapt to reflect your new beliefs. Therefore the fear you once felt and believed in, along with all of the other side effects that that fear created, will disappear. Thus pain is overcome and difficulties are surmounted.

My Kerala Trip: Animals In The Zoo

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 04:16 AM PDT

One of the best experiences are the ones where I got to glimpsed how Indians live and work in the towns.

He is making tea or chai in his little tea shop

He is making tea or chai in his little tea shop

Of course I cannot generalize because we got to see only 3 towns – Pulpally, a tiny town minutes from Vanamoolika; Irinjalakuda which was near the Ayurvedic centre we stayed at and finally downtown Kochi on our final day.

This man is melting gold the traditional way to make trinkets

But each town gave me a lovely insight into how India really is. It is also telling that these towns aren't the types of places tourists usually visit so we caused a bit of excitement wherever we went!

A tiny shop full of everything

A tiny shop full of everything

After all it isn't common to see Chinese and Caucasians walking about their towns. While we ogled at them, they ogled right back at us! Kids were the friendliest – they'd wave and say hello to us each time we smiled.

Snack-seller with his goods

Everyone wanted to take a photo especially with Bastiaan (whom I had nicknamed Brad Pitt just for fun!), Marcel and Ingmar. When the guys went off to see the Athirapilly waterfall, a magnificent jaw-dropping fall (which I'd missed because I wanted to go exploring the town with Uma, Yvonne and Gwen), the Indian men and boys were falling over themselves to take photos with these 'white gods'. (You can see Bastiaan's video of the waterfall here.)

Pulpally town was the smallest of the three towns but it had a lot of character. We had a quick 45-minute stopover in this town after we visited an organic farm not too far from the town. Like dazed tourists, everything we saw was curiously interesting. I didn't know who watched whom; the townfolk were spilling out of first-floor balconies looking at us.

In every place I go, I like wandering in towns and looking at their supermarkets or shops. (Oh HK supermarkets were absolute cat's whiskers which I know, I know, I have yet to blog about).

Gwen looking at teas and coffees in an Indian supermarket

It was the same in Pulpally. Nic and I looked into their tiny shops, the size of our Penang 'ottukedai'. Everything was cheap to us – I bought some sliced fruit cake at a mere 30 sen.

An Indian fruit stall with an array of local delights!

In Irinjalakuda which was a slightly urban town, we still got stares. There we were, 4 women walking down the streets and stopping ever so often to snap photos while greedily munching on our chicken kebabs. The kebabs were like god's food to us the moment we spotted them. We had by then started craving for meat because throughout our stay, we had vegetarian meals mostly. Spotting a kebab stall outside a shop elicited delighted screams from me, Uma, Yvonne and Gwen. And at 40 rupees (RM2.80) each, it was a steal.

We had to have our kebabs!

We had to have our kebabs!

In Irinjalakuda too we walked into a no-aircond Indian supermarket. The interesting bit is that it had a whole shelf of Ayurvedic medicines and oils. I went a bit nuts buying camphor oil, neem oil and herbal soaps, utterly forgetting how much I was allowed to check-in to AirAsia.

Paan seller in Kochi

In Kochi, again we walked about with no intention whatsover to buy. It was more of seeing what went on in the town. I think Kochi is a city so it was a lot more cosmopolitan. When you see a place with shopping malls, it is definitely more than just a town.

Would you dare to get a tattoo here?

Would you dare to get a tattoo here?

Again, the action was happening outside the malls; I saw a roadside tattoo artist with a customer! Of course, to all Indians, we were Japanese. They kept asking us "Konnichi wa?" and waving their wares at us.

Sticking out like a Japanese in downtown Kochi

It was good that we had Uma with us. Uma helped us bargain and put on her "touch-me-and-you're-dead-meat" grouch face if the vendors tried to raise prices (which they did when they saw us trailing behind Uma).

Uma and Yvonne - tired out!

Uma and Yvonne - tired out!

Do you love exploring towns and poking your nose into what people are doing?

I know I do! That's the best bits about travel!

Jika Menara Warisan Diteruskan Juga, Kami Yakin Ia Akan Menjadi Milik PR Juga Akhirnya

BN yakin pembangkang lambat laun terima Menara Warisan Merdeka

Kini mereka mahu mengambil alih Putrajaya pula.

Kedua, mereka menyatakan bahawa "mereka yakin pembangkang lambat laun terima Menara Warisan Merdeka". GB kata "Pakatan Rakyat" yakin lambat laun Menara Warisan Merdeka akan menjadi milik PR juga akhirnya FULL STOP

Ku Nan Kata Makkal Sakti Boleh Mohon Sertai BN, PPP Kata Nanti Dulu

Makkal Sakti boleh mohon sertai BN, kata Tengku Adnan

Gambar fail

— Bernama

PPP Harap BN Waspada Dalam Terima Ahli Baru

- BERNAMA

Moving Backwards with Backward Decisions!

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 01:58 AM PDT

Were we expected to be beaming with joy when Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said HERE that history will be a must-pass subject in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination from 2013 along with the Bahasa Malaysia subject for students to obtain the SPM certificate?

In his winding-up speech at the 2010 Umno General Assembly, he said that the authorities needed time:
 • to let the students adjust
 • to train teachers
 • to prepare our students to face the new system
He also announced the following changes:

1. From 2014, history would also be made a core subject in primary school under the Primary School Standard Curriculum. Apart from that, the ministry would also make improvements to the subject, with emphasis on enhancing the understanding of the Constitution so as to enlighten students about the country's nation-building process.

2. The implementation of the school-based assessment system, which would replace the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR), would be brought forward from 2016 to 2014 following calls for the assessment system to be expedited.

3. The UPSR (Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah) examination will be retained but will undergo improvement based on current development.

Frankly, I pity the student population who are being treated like guinea pigs in some horrible experiment gone awry! We have seen so many changes in the education system in the past few years, none of which have truly benefitted the students (except maybe for the short-lived decision wrt the teaching of Maths and Science in English).

Many have taken umbrage to this recent shocking disclosure. What is the ACTUAL AGENDA behind this neuron-challenged decision?

What is the rationale of "enhancing the understanding of the Constitution so as to enlighten students about the country's nation-building process"? Good heavens! We are talking about school going kids and not law students ok? Aren't they a wee bit young for such blatant indoctrination?

With deplorable standards in our education system (such as glaring errors in the recent PMR English paper as reported in The Star yesterday), shouldn't the Ministry of Education enhance the teaching of English, Science and Mathematics to make our youth MORE competitive globally?

Instead, we seem to be moving backwards in time with such backward decisions!!!

On December 7th 2009, Bernama reported that "The curriculum may be revised to make sports compulsory to relive the glory days of sports in schools, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. He said the education policy would be revised to give importance to sports as the Education Ministry wanted to produce students, who excel not only in academics but also co-curriculum. "There are many co-curriculum activities. We have sports, clubs, associations and uniform units. I want to change the policy. Sports will be compulsory in schools," he said at the Sekolah Menengah Tinggi Muar alumni dinner here on Sunday night.

So 10 months or so later, it is goodbye to the emphasis on sports and hello to history!!! WOW!
Many have expressed their outrage at this nightmarish announcement that have left many students with mouths agape!

Tony Pua also questioned this move in The Malaysian Digest HERE where he said:

"Firstly, the underlying rationale behind the move appears to be to "teach" students about the Constitution, and given the announcement of the measure at a Umno national convention, the focus will naturally be on the Article 153 and other related articles with regards to Malay 'rights'. Malaysian students should however, be taught on all aspects of the Constitution including the Reid Commission report which was the basis of our constitution when it was drafted," said Pua in a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

"Will there for example, be an equal emphasis on say, the Article 8 which states that 'All persons are equal before the law and entitled to the equal protection of the law' and 'Except as expressly authorized by this constitution, there shall be no discrimination against citizens on the ground only of religion, race, descent, place of birth or gender in any law or in the appointment to any office or employment under a public authority or in the administration of any law relating to the acquisition, holding or disposition of property or the establishing or carrying on of any trade, business, profession, vocation or employment'," he added.

Pua expressed fear for, according to him, "this new measure is a blatant attempt to indoctrinate our students with a narrow and biased interpretation of our Federal Constitution and our country's founding history".

He called upon Muhyiddin to first convene independent advisory and review body comprising of representatives from the Bar Council, eminent retired judges as well as renowned academics on the history of Malaya.

The second argument Pua brought up was he said the current teaching of History for the various examinations leaves much to be desired. This is because the focus is currently almost entirely based on memorization and regurgitation of facts during examinations and does not at all involve critical thinking, analysis and interpretation.

"In the light of the fact that the (Education) Ministry intends to improve our students' learning and thinking abilities, the approach used to teach history must first be overhauled before the subject can be made compulsory. Otherwise, history will just become a meaningless subject just like the subject moral studies today where students just memorizes answers word to word to comply with a rigid marking scheme which punishes analytical variants and interpretations. It will only make Malaysian students even more incapable of independent thought," he said.

"Hence we call upon the Ministry to resolve these two critical issues first and not put the cart before the horse by making the subject compulsory without the necessary reforms," urged Pua.

Someone should do an investigation of how many Ministers/Deputy Ministers/Secretaries/MPs/ADUNs send their children to international schools and make the findings public. The data should show the trend over the last 10 years. Now if there are more of them sending their children to international/private schools, it simply means that they have no confidence in their own education policies.

Those in positions of authority MUST set the example by:

1. sending their children to local schools
2. sending their children to local colleges
3. sending their children to local universities

Perhaps then, we can be more certain of the quality of education in our country. But I digress...

As a retired educator, I am appalled that decisions can be made at the whims and fancies of any Tom, Dick or Harry in positions of power without considering the NEEDS of students, market conditions, manpower capabilities, costs involved and training resources available.

It is almost as though they think they are magicians - with the wave of a wand or the click of the mouse, conditions can be summoned to meet their grandiose dreams!!!

Hello! Reality bites!!!

The standard of education in Malaysia is far from pleasing. What will happen to us when we have leaders making a mockery of institutions? What will happen to the next generation when we have leaders who are terrified of horror movies and sanitary pad advertisements? What will happen to us when we have leaders who do not look at the grassroots but can only look up HIGHER and HIGHER as they build multi-storey buildings that we most certainly do NOT need?

I love Mr. Bambooman's comment in Malaysia Today HERE where he said:

2010.......must pass History for SPM certificate
2011.......must pass Sports (any discipline ) in SPM becos malaysia lacks quality athletes
2012.......must pass Geography in SPM becos UMNO has no sense of direction !
2013.......must pass Home Science and Industrial Arts in SPM becos malaysia lacks SKILLED manpower
2014 and onwards.......Malaysians must pass TOLLs so that UMNO can enrich themselves and can PASS their time at the AGM passing sanitary pad's resolutions ! !
Oh dear me!! May God help Malaysia and give divine wisdom to the leaders to say the right statements, make the best decisions and do the morally correct acts. May ALL stand firm and speak up against this decision!!!

Kudos to The Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (Page) chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim who accused Muhyiddin of succumbing to populist pressure and likened the decision to the government's policy reversal on the teaching of science and mathematics in English (commonly referred to using its Malay acronym, PPSMI) last year, after pressure from Malay language nationalists. She said that this is yet another politically-motivated decision to appease and please Umno delegates at its general assembly, without any thought given to recent policy decisions that have been made by him on education thus far. Click HERE for the report.

As for the rest of us, let's pray that we will ensure that our country PROGRESSES and MOVES FORWARD but that can only happen if we vote CORRECTLY in the imminent GE!! Get ready folks. Fasten your seat belts and prepare for takeoff!

Faekah Bidas Khairy: Isu Pasir Warisan Pentadbiran BN & Mana Monorel Di Rembau?

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 01:30 AM PDT

," katanya. -FMT

Asian-American quartet Far East Movement hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart with Like A G6, featuring The Cataracs and Dev.

Far East Movement consists of members Kev Nish (Chinese/Japanese American), Prohgress (Korean American), J-Splif (Korean American) and DJ Virman (Filipino American). Not sure if they are first Asian-American artiste(s) to top the Billboard, but great achievement regardless. Congrats.

Maknanya, hak keistimewaan Melayu tetap terjamin walaupun apabila Pakatan Rakyat menjadi kerajaan.

Cukuplah!

Gunung Merapi Bakal Meletus Bila-bila Masa. Pelajar Malaysia Dipindahkan

GUNUNG MERAPI BAKAL MELETUS: PENDUDUK MULA DIPINDAHKAN

-singalutmetro

Galas: BN Salahguna Jentera Kerajaan

Posted: 24 Oct 2010 11:44 PM PDT

-SH

Umno peralat JHEOA kawal penempatan Orang Asal?

Penasihat Jentera Pilihan raya Kecil Dun Galas, Datuk Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah berkata, perbuatan Umno memperalatkan JHEOA amat memalukan kerana ia berlaku pada kempen pilihan raya.

-harakahdaily
