The problem with monkeys ... and humans

The problem with monkeys ... and humans

The problem with monkeys ... and humans

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 10:16 AM PDT

In the last few days, we had been subjected to the gruesome story of how a wild monkey had gained entry into an apartment and carried away a four-day-old baby before biting and killing the newborn. It's a shocking tale and a grim reminder that while monkeys may be our closest relative on the evolution chain, they are still savage animals.

How many times have you seen monkeys chase humans. Countless times, actually, I only need to go to the nearby Bukit Mertajam Forest Park to see people taunt and tease the monkeys and then run away screaming when the monkeys run after them. The worst offenders are not children but the adult Malay women who should know better. That's why whenever I climb the trails around the BM hill, I would carry either an umbrella or a walking stick to scare unwanted animals away.

Yesterday during my walk at the foothills, I came across a monkey of immense proportion, a monster monkey if ever there was one. An alpha male monkey, I was told, but I'm not too sure.

It may be a different specie of monkey because it sported a short tale compared with the rest of them. Regardless, this was definitely the biggest and baddest monkey around. I could see that it was not scared of anything around it, least of all people. Looking at its size, I will rather move aside if this monkey comes ambling towards me.

But it was not only this particular beast that wasn't scared of people. Nearby was a group of smaller monkeys playing about on a car's roof. But what particularly riled me was that someone actually came up to the monkeys and not only threw food to them but encouraged them to snatch the food from his hand. It's downright dangerous, and it's people like this person who contributes to the monkey menace. By feeding them, it makes the monkeys too bold and lazy. They become far too aggressive. And it's people like him who usually make a hue and cry when someone gets attacked by the animals.

Another fatal accident, another bus error

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 10:13 AM PDT

The latest road accident near Batu Ampat Toll Plaza of the North-South Expressway yesterday evening, saddens me. I believe many other Malaysians are extremely shocked and appalled with it.

How could a bus ferrying dozens of passengers lost control and flipped over onto the opposite lane, bulldozing oncoming van, cars and another bus? At press time, at least 12 people died and dozens injured, some in serious condition (read Bernama).

Could it be technical or human error? If it was human error, the background of the driver, his history and medical record should be investigate. Should technical errors led to such an incident, the condition of the bus must be investigated, including its last inspection with the Puspakom.

The country has seen many major road accidents over the last few years, mostly involving heavy vehicles like buses, lorries, tankers and trailers. The common error, apart from human, is the tyres in use.

In many countries like Japan, Switzerland, Croatia, United States, Germany and Australia, the use of re-thread tube tyres are totally banned due to its instability and unsafe condition. The impact should such a tyre depletes, is beyond control.

However in Malaysia, it is still in use for its low price. A new medium-class tubeless tyre for a bus could easily costs RM800 each, compared to RM200 of a re-thread. Some new tyres are sold at RM2,000.

It is time for the government to take another look at this matter as in involves road safety. If there is a need to ban such tyres, then we should at least put a control on the price of new tyres for heavy vehicles.

To those involved in the Simpang Ampan accident, do accept my sincere sympathy and condolence.

MCA loyal dog to Umno, cannot fight for a fair policy for Chinese community!

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 09:14 AM PDT

The MCA annual general meeting (AGM) today kicked off telling its key BN ally Umno that while they were still loyal, the Chinese party does not appreciate being led by the nose nor will it only silently follow, echoing the strong stance taken by its Youth AGM yesterday.
mca agm 2010 101010 chua soi lek speech 2At the party's 57th AGM in Kuala Lumpur today.President Chua Soi Lek said, "Please do not question our loyalty to BN and our commitment to power sharing... However we are not a blind follower."

As such, Chua said that his party may not be on the same page with Umno nor BN all the time and there will be occasions when MCA will take a different stand from Umno. The former health minister said MCA needed to be sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the rakyat, so that we continue to be their voice in the government.

Recently, in a session at the National Unity Forum 2010 here, Tun Hanif Omar said the government had not put enough emphasis on national unity in the past years. "There are not a lot of non-Bumiputeras in the civil service, in government-linked companies and there is also a lack of Malays in Chinese businesses," Hanif said.

So, can MCA answer why? Why after so many years, there are not a lot of non-Bumiputeras (that is, Chinese, Indian, 'dan lain-lain') in the civil service, in government-linked companies and there is also a lack of Malays in Chinese businesses??? Why are certain sectors dominated by a certain race?

Khalid Ibrahim Masuk Gelanggang, Azmin Terkesima

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 08:41 AM PDT

Khalid Ibrahim tanding timbalan presiden PKR

Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim akhirnya mengumumkan bertanding jawatan timbalan presiden PKR.

Foo CK’s Building Material Project 2 Presentation

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 07:04 AM PDT

Foo CK is my lecturer for Building Material class. Frankly speaking, this class is not very wonderful because there's many theory and research work to do. Though, this is college, many stuff will not be liken and I still have to accept it. It's ok, it's alright. I don't really complain a lot. It's life people.

University, college, is not much different from high school in my opinion. Just stuff get more serious. Presentation became cooler and more professional than before. I love presentation, I like talking in front, my idol keynote presenter is Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc! That's why I always follow his keynote all the time. Rocks.

Just sharing here are some photos, taken during the presentation about building materials. Photos are taken by my lecturer, Mr Foo. =D He borrowed my LX5 to snap the photos.

This presentation is about research of two material we have picked during our Ikano Power Centre site visit few weeks ago. We reviewed, researched and have to write up all the stuff on mounting board, at same time also prepared powerpoint slides. I felt I didn't do so well but thankfully, I got pretty good result fo this. Oh yeah.

My group. Good job people.

Chua Cuba Takutkan Bukan Melayu Terhadap PAS

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 07:02 AM PDT

Hanya PAS berkuasa jika Pakatan tawan Putrajaya, BN beri Cina amaran

Sehubungan itu, Najib menambah, Pengerusi DAP Karpal Singh serba salah apabila satu ketika dahulu bahawa "melangkah mayat saya" berhubung matlamat PAS.

How Well Have You Aged?

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Different parts of our body ages at different times. We all accept that getting older is inevitable, and now leading clinicians have revealed the exact age when different body parts start to decline, most alarming being the brain and lungs.

French doctors have found that the quality of men's' sperm starts to deteriorate by 35, so that by the time a man is 45 a third of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Here, with the help of leading clinicians, Angela Epstein tells the Daily Mail the ages when different parts of the body start to lose their battle with time.

BRAIN - Starts ageing at 20
As we get older, the number of nerve cells - or neurons - in the brain decrease. We start with around 100 billion, but in our 20s this number starts to decline. By 40, we could be losing up to 10,000 per day, affecting memory, co-ordination and brain function.

GUT - Starts ageing at 55
A healthy gut has a good balance between harmful and 'friendly' bacteria. But levels of friendly bacteria in the gut drop significantly after 55, particularly in the large intestine, says Tom MacDonald, professor of immunology at Barts And The London medical school. As a result, we suffer from poor digestion and an increased risk of gut disease. Constipation is more likely as we age, as the flow of digestive juices from the stomach, liver, pancreas and small intestine slows down.

BREASTS - Start ageing at 35
BY their mid-30s, women's breasts start losing tissue and fat, reducing size and fullness. Sagging starts properly at 40 and the areola (the area surrounding the nipple) can shrink considerably.

BLADDER - Starts ageing at 65
Loss of bladder control is more likely when you hit 65. Women are more vulnerable to bladder problems as, after the menopause, declining estrogen levels make tissues in the urethra - the tube through which urine passes - thinner and weaker, reducing bladder support. Bladder capacity in an older adult generally is about half that of a younger person - about two cups in a 30-year-old and one cup in a 70-year-old. ....

LUNGS - Start ageing at 20
Lung capacity slowly starts to decrease from the age of 20. By the age of 40, some people are already experiencing breathlessness. This is partly because the muscles and the rib cage which control breathing stiffen up.

VOICE - Starts ageing at 65
Our voices become quieter and hoarser with age. The soft tissues in the voice box (larynx) weaken, affecting the pitch, loudness and quality of the voice. A woman's voice may become huskier and lower in pitch, whereas a man's might become thinner and higher.

EYES - Start ageing at 40
Glasses are the norm for many over-40s as failing eyesight kicks in - usually long-sightedness, affecting our ability to see objects up close.

HEART - Starts ageing at 40
The heart pumps blood less effectively around the body as we get older. This is because blood vessels become less elastic, while arteries can harden or become blocked because of fatty deposits forming on the coronary arteries - caused by eating too much saturated fat. The blood supply to the heart is then reduced, resulting in painful angina. Men over 45 and women over 55 are at greater risk of a heart attack.

LIVER - Starts ageing at 70
This is the only organ in the body which seems to defy the aging process.

KIDNEYS - Starts ageing at 50
With kidneys, the number of filtering units (nephrons) that remove waste from the bloodstream starts to reduce in middle age.

PROSTATE - Starts ageing at 50
The prostate often becomes enlarged with age, leading to problems such as increased need to urinate, says Professor Roger Kirby, director of the Prostate Centre in London . This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia and affects half of men over 50, but rarely those under 40. It occurs when the prostate absorbs large amounts of the male sex hormone testosterone, which increases the growth of cells in the prostate. A normal prostate is the size of a walnut, but the condition can increase this to the size of a tangerine.

BONES - Start ageing at 35
'Throughout our life, old bone is broken down by cells called osteoclasts and replaced by bone-building cells called osteoblasts - a process called bone turnover,' explains Robert Moots, professor of rheumatology at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool . Children's bone growth is rapid - the skeleton takes just two years to renew itself completely. In adults, this can take ten years. Until our mid-20s, bone density is still increasing. But at 35 bone loss begins as part of the natural ageing process.

TEETH - Start ageing at 40
As we age, we produce less saliva, which washes away bacteria, so teeth and gums are more vulnerable to decay. Receding gums - when tissue is lost from gums around the teeth - is common in adults over 40.

MUSCLES - Start ageing at 30
Muscle is constantly being built up and broken down, a process which is well balanced in young adults. However, by the time we're 30, breakdown is greater than buildup, explains Professor Robert Moots. Once adults reach 40, they start to lose between 0.5 and 2 per cent of their muscle each year. Regular exercise can help prevent this.

HEARING - Starts ageing mid-50s
More than half of people over 60 lose hearing because of their age, according to the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

SKIN - Starts ageing mid-20s
The skin starts to age naturally in your mid-20s.

TASTE AND SMELL - Start ageing at 60
We start out in life with about 10,000 taste buds scattered on the tongue. This number can halve later in life. After we turn 60, taste and smell gradually decline, partly as a result of the normal ageing process.

FERTILITY - Starts ageing at 35
Female fertility begins to decline after 35, as the number and quality of eggs in the ovaries start to fall. The lining of the womb may become thinner, making it less likely for a fertilised egg to take, and also creating an environment hostile to sperm.

HAIR - Starts ageing at 30

Male hair loss usually begins in the 30s. Hair is made in tiny pouches just under the skin's surface, known as follices. A hair normally grows from each follicle for about three years, is then shed, and a new hair grows. Most people will have some gray hair by the age of 35. When we are young, our hair is coloured by the pigments produced by cells in the hair follicle known as melanocytes.

Enjoy life before too late...........

Histeria Lagi. Apa Puncanya?

Pelajar Sekolah Agama Kuala Terengganu Diserang Histeria

KUALA TERENGGANU, 10 Okt - Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Sheikh Abdul Malik di sini kecoh apabila enam pelajar perempuannya diserang histeria selepas acara perhimpunan pagi tadi.

Galas: Ibrahim Putar Lidah Kata Perkasa Tak Mahu Kempen Calon UMNO BN

Lelaki Punyai 100 Isteri Meninggal Dunia

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 02:30 AM PDT

Nairobi: Seorang lelaki Kenya yang terkenal kerana mempunyai 100 isteri, meninggal dunia minggu ini selepas jatuh sakit, lapor media tempatan.

Lelaki yang tinggi digelar 'Danger' (Bahaya) kerana pandai memikat wanita, mempunyai hampir 160 anak, lapor Perbadanan Penyiaran Kenya (KBC). Ancentus 'Danger' Akuku berusia 90-an.

"Adakah semua isterinya tinggal bersama? Gila," kata Wanjiru, 28, ketika diminta mengulas. – Agensi

Talent is borderless

Source_Extracts from The Star:Talent is borderless, Contradictheory, By DZOF AZMI

Over the recent holiday season, there was a piece of advice that was being passed around, I heard: Don't go to KLCC on a public holiday because it's full of foreigners.

What is the basis for the belief that the country is only for its natural born citizens and everyone else exists to serve us?

That if a non-Malaysian wants to partake in some ceremony, function or – heaven forbid – go to the shopping mall, then they are just transient pendatang (immigrants) without a real right to be there?

  1. We talk of Malaysians leaving Malaysia and we say it is a bad thing.
  2. On the other hand, there are people hammering on the door to get in, and we seem to resent it when they make it.

Of course, the problem is that the foreigners entering are not the same as the people exiting. Coming in are_

  1. labourers,
  2. construction workers
  3. and restaurant waiters
  4. ( My NOTE:That's all you see??? Doctors, nursing-lecturers, Professors, Lecturers, Goldsmiths, Pilots, Pilot trainer Instructors, Students, Engineers, etc. )
    1.
      1. who contribute to our society
      2. while trying to assimilate as quickly as possible
      3. by learning the local culture
      4. (including the language).

Leaving the country are lawyers, doctors and engineers who feel that they cannot find a good life in Malaysia for themselves or their family, and that the local environment is restrictive of their ambitions.

Between the two of them, who should we try harder to attract?

Who should Malaysia invest more in to keep?

An obvious answer would be the skilled labour that is leaving. Not only is valuable nation- and economy-building talent flying out of the country, their progeny is following suit. And children of talented, well-educated people tend to grow up to become talented well-educated people themselves.

On the other hand, the Asean immigrants are not only low-skilled, they also send a significant part of their pay cheque home.

All this seems to support the notion that keeping skilled citizens is important for the economic growth of the country.

Yet, these points are both short -sighted and tunnel-visioned.

In a borderless world, there is no real need for skilled knowledge workers to ply their trade in the country that they live in.

For example, I am currently working on a project that is being made by a Malaysian production house, but that will eventually will be handed over (along with the intellectual property rights) to an international satellite and cable TV channel. The value of the final product that I am contributing to is worth far, far more than the financial compensation I am getting for it.

So, perhaps if I emigrated overseas and did my work quickly enough there, I would be able to earn much more, and bring the extra money back home for a net gain?

I know I am being simplistic in my argument, but the point is, geographic location does not have much to do with whether I contribute to my country or not.

Conversely, the low wage earning foreigners are_

  1. clearly contributing value to the nation.
  2. I know that's true because they work for Malaysian companies, and these companies are turning a profit partially because they employ such people.
  3. The fact that these workers send a large proportion of their wages across the Strait of Malacca is a small loss, comparatively –
  4. certainly less so than when compared to how much leaves the country when a local CEO buys himself a new Porsche from Italy.
  5. If these workers do not improve their skills, and can be easily replaced by others, then we should encourage them to work hard while they're here, but not worry if they want to leave.
  6. However, if they grow to become skilled and are difficult to replace, then we as a country should congratulate them on building a new life here, and make it clear they should use those skills to better their adopted country by offering them citizenship. (NOTE: ONCE SKILLED and learned the language/culture, Malaysian Immigration law kicks them out. They PREFER TO BRING IN NEW ONES, reather than extending the ALREADY TRAINED WORKER. WHY, new permits only could greased their hands by the agents.

Conversely, Malaysians that leave to work abroad_

  1. can also be a benefit.
  2. They are making themselves better.
  3. The new experiences broaden not just their minds, but also their skill sets, making them more valuable as individuals.
  4. And if these people return, Malaysia will be better for it.
  5. Just look at Datuk Nicol David. She trains and works overseas, but brings glory and recognition to Malaysia everything she steps onto a squash court.

The key is whether those from abroad will return to benefit Malaysia. That can happen if Malaysia can somehow maintain its attractiveness – and that this country is attractive is not in doubt.

I have several foreign friends who would be happy to come and live and work here for the foreseeable future_

  1. if somebody gave them half a chance.
  2. But they don't really get that chance,
    1. not even when they have made the effort to help build Malaysian companies from scratch and turn them into international players.
    2.

    3. Not even when they marry a Malaysian and raise a family here.
  3. I don't understand why we cry over talent that leaves the country when we ignore talent that wants to be here.

At the end of the day, we as Malaysians should be proud that others want to come here and make something of their lives. I am indeed happy that Ivan and Hilda want to label themselves as Malaysians and do their best in competition. And if they should win the whole thing, I'll be sending in my proposal to naturalise Ivan as a foreign-born but locally proud Malaysian.

Logic is the antithesis of emotion but mathematician-turned-scriptwriter Dzof Azmi's theory is that people need both to make of life's vagaries and contradictions.

Star:Young doctors need a dose of human touch

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 01:18 AM PDT

Source_Star letter:Young doctors need a dose of human touch

I AM writing in response to recent letters about young doctors being transferred to other states and of stressful working conditions in hospitals.

I think I am what I am today because of what I have gone through in the past. As I look back, my heart is filled with gratitude for all the patients I have been allowed and privileged to manage and treat in the different places I worked. I am deeply indebted to them for making me a better doctor.

I believe that doctors are placed in a position to serve. Our first and foremost duty is to serve mankind, heal them of their sickness if possible and alleviate their suffering and discomfort if a cure is not possible.

No doubt, you have to be properly equipped with knowledge and clinical skills before you can do so, but I realise that the greatest classroom for a doctor is just any ordinary health facility.

If one is willing to have an open mind, a humble attitude and a heart to learn, he will find that wherever he works, there will be plenty of learning and training opportunities. Yes, I learn how to be a better doctor from the patients I see.

Remember that medicine is both a science and an art. In order to be a good doctor, a person needs to have love, concern, mercy, sympathy and compassion for people under his care. One needs to have a good understanding of other religions, beliefs, traditions, culture and ways of life.

One needs to have an understanding and sympathetic heart, a pair of listening ears, patience and humility. All these can perhaps be summed up as the "human touch".

You can acquire these only if you have love for your fellow human beings. If one serves willingly and lovingly, one will find opportunities for "training" no matter where one is.

There is no hurry to go into specialisation. Let's serve wherever we are needed and placed. Let's not work grudgingly or harbour bitterness for not getting what or where we think we deserve.

I am sure you will be richly rewarded, if not now, perhaps in the afterlife.

When the time comes, go into specialisation and I am sure you will be a better person, and upon completion of your training, a better doctor and specialist.

I dread the day when we have specialists with very good knowledge and skills but without the human touch.

A DOCTOR,
Ipoh.

THE STAR SAYS:‘Change or die’ is a reality, not an ultimatum

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 01:14 AM PDT

Najib Tun Razak

Source_The Star:'Change or die' is a reality, not an ultimatum, THE STAR SAYS

FOR many Malaysians, the Prime Minister's challenge to his compatriots that _

  1. the country must change meaningfully
  2. or become a failed state

may seem dramatic and rather excessive.

Although Malaysia may_

  1. need to change
  2. by upgrading itself in various areas,

they see the alternative as becoming bogged down in a failed state a little extreme. In reality, it is this kind of public complacency we must be wary of.

The country's political leadership is clearly serious about ushering in major changes. But since the call to rise above ourselves, to excel and to produce world-class work has been made by previous administrations before, the need to continue pressing the point only shows how long we have lagged in not coming round to doing it.

In a dynamic development process, a society seeking to stay ahead must ensure constant development while being mindful of the quality of that development. It must also be cognizant of the progress being made by other countries around it, since even moving along at the same pace as before could still mean being left behind by default.

In East Asia there is no denying that countries are generally on the upswing, regardless of the 1990s Asian financial crisis. We have since seen some neighbours improve their economic standing, standard of living, social indices and even politics.

But while several have progressed, some have not – either in absolute or relative terms. Malaysians must ensure that Malaysia belongs in the first rather than the second group.

In launching the Razak School of Government on Friday, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak outlined some priorities for improving the civil service. These might seem to relate to the delivery of public services, but they also require transforming the attitude and aptitude of the civil servants themselves.

Some may be unconvinced of the urgency of the Government's priorities and so are unprepared to comply. They need to be educated on the changes needed, and if they still refuse to cooperate for the sake of the nation then they should be replaced.

Malaysians should have outgrown the narrow premise of development as largely economic and infrastructural in nature. The next phase of national progress must encompass public services that are responsible, responsive and innovative by being people-centred and people-driven.

Happiness Is A Choice

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 01:00 AM PDT

This evening, I thought I'd share something different taken from my other blog at Masterwordsmith@Writers.Inc. where I put up inspirational stuff from here and there. There are no socio-political posts or jokes in that blog. The following article is about how happiness is a choice for us. May you and yours always make that wise decision to be happy, no matter how dark the day. Have a lovely evening!

The basis of your life is choice; the purpose of your life is happiness.

You can choose to discover what makes you happy or you can choose a to go down a path of misery. If you should choose to discover happiness, your happiness will allow you to find peace and you will spread joy around you. If you should choose a life of confusion and misery, you will grow, but the growth will be in despair and you will spread this despair to those around you.

Happiness is a choice. You can chose to be happy or you can chose to be angry. The choice is always yours. It is as easy to be happy, as it is easy to be angry. All you have to do is make the choice as to the path you will take.

Imagine happiness and it will be yours. Ask yourself what makes you happy and then think why you want it. When you do this the essence of your desire will be activated. You will start to uncover inner feelings about yourself. Listen to your inner voice. You will start to understand your desires and you will be able to act on them. Remember never to assume anything. You do not know what others think and 9 out of 10 you will be wrong. Being judgement only leads you to judge yourself. All of those imperfections that you see in others are only reflections of what you fear yourself to be. This only leads to anger and resentment

Anger, resentment, despair, all of these things need to be let go. These feelings will do you no good and only bring you misery. Try to look at everything in life in a positive way. Believe it or not, there is always something positive in anything we deem negative.

Give yourself a chance to be happy. Love yourself, be kind to yourself, and remember everyone deserves to be happy.

Mayat Bayi Perempuan Dihurungi Lalat

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 01:29 AM PDT

-SH

UMNO Kelantan Belanja Sakan Hasil Rompakan Wang Royalti

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 10:55 PM PDT

What am I to complaint if former world’s highest intelligence quotient record holder feels happy with an ordinary life?

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 09:36 PM PDT

Source_The Star:Life in the high IQ lane By HWANG JURIE

Former whiz kid feels happy with ordinary life despite media expectations.

SEOUL: What will people think of 16-month-old wonder child Jonathon Rader, able to play various musical instruments, if he decides not to pursue a career as a musician?

The answer seems to be "a failure" when hearing the story from Kim Ung-yong, a 48-year-old record holder for the world's highest intelligence quotient, in an interview with The Korea Herald.

"I was famous for having a 210 IQ and being able to solve intricate math equations at the age of four, Kim said. "Apparently, the media belittled the fact that I chose to work in a business planning department at Chungbuk Development Corporation."

He said the media denounced him as a "failed genius" but he has no idea why his life, which he considers a success, had to be called a failure.

"People expected me to become a high-ranking official in the government or a big company, but I don't think just because I chose not to become the expected it gives anyone a right to call anyone's life a failure," he said.

Kim said his life is a great success.

When Kim decided to leave NASA, entered a university located outside of Seoul and became an ordinary company worker, the media took him to task.

He said he is still bitter with the memory.

"I'm trying to tell people that I am happy the way I am. But why do people have to call my happiness a failure?"

Invited by NASA at the age of eight, Kim worked there for 10 years but calls the time spent there his lonely years.

"At that time, I led my life like a machine. I woke up, solved the daily assigned equation, ate, slept, and so forth. I really didn't know what I was doing, and I was lonely and had no friends."

For young Kim, a longing to be with his mother was the decisive factor in his decision to return to Korea.

As expected, the media covered his return.

"I was sick and tired of being the centre of attention again. I felt like a monkey in a zoo," he said. "At that time, there were no twitters nor instant messaging, so that gave newspapers more power, I guess the word went around so fast some people even started calling me schizophrenic for being cooped up in a room. I wanted to avoid any kind of attention towards me."

Meanwhile, he wanted to get a job in Korea but to even do that he was told that he needed elementary, middle, and high school diplomas.

"Since I had no official diploma I had to start all over from scratch," Kim explained.

Nevertheless, that was no obstacle for Kim. Soon, he took certificate exams and earned his elementary and middle school diplomas within a year and then a high school diploma in the following year.

"After that, I wanted to attend a university, rather than get a job right away. I wanted to attend school with friends my age, and outside of Seoul, where I thought I would receive less attention," he said.

Kim said he has led a happy life ever since.

"At school, I lived my freshmen year as an elementary school kid, my sophomore year as a middle schooler, my junior year as a high school student, and spent my senior year like a normal college kid. I consider my life a success. There aren't many people who do what they really want to do, but I do. That is what you call success, what else do you call a happy life?"

Despite numerous attempts to avoid the media in the past, Kim was hounded by them again when a story arose of a boy entering college at the age of nine – the reports mentioned Kim as a "failing model".

"The stories pointed me out as if I had set a bad example for the little boy and reported that the kid should not grow up like me," Kim said, expressing regret at the media reports.

Kim claimed that people invest too much meaning in IQ.

"Some think people with a high IQ can be omnipotent, but that's not true. Look at me, I don't have musical talent, nor am I excelling in sports," he said.

Just like the world records for athletes, having a high IQ is just another element of human talent.

"If there is a long spectrum of categories with many different talents, I would only be a part of the spectrum. I'm just good in concentrating on one thing, and there are many others who have different talents," he explained.

High IQ, he said, does not necessarily mean imperishable memory.

"I could speak four languages – French, German, Japanese and English – but I can't speak fluently now. I could brush up and speak a bit, but honestly it became rusty.

"Society should not judge anyone with unilateral standards – everyone has different learning levels, hopes, talents, and dreams and we should respect that," Kim said. – The Korea Herald

"Reading the news recently on a certain residents of this country that's been giving the enumerators a hard time as they were not able to converse in the national language reminded me of my own frustrating encounters with those from this small section of society.

"There were a few occasions, during those times I spent at the outskirts, where I tried to converse with these people only to be snubbed just because the persons I were inquiring from didn't know how to speak Malay and English. It just baffles me that these persons have been living in this country for all their lives yet they don't know (or refuse to know) how to use their national language."
