yes sure they were free to protest but they were unruly and aggressive. (read below)

it was those (part) damn mamaks from the komtar traders association again!

but that parti cinta malaysia also had to join in! good, good! let's kick their ass too at coming GE.

the protest came a day after opposition leader, umno's azhar was suspended. hmm… what great timing eh. what does this tell?

Noisy protest against Guan Eng outside state assembly

Susan Loone
Nov 2, 10

A group of 100 people representing Balik Pulau residents, Komtar traders and Parti Cinta Malaysia members held a noisy demonstration in front of the Penang state assembly this morning to protest against the water tariff hike, land acquisition in Balik Pulau, and renovations in Komtar which affected businesses.

They demanded to meet with Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, but were kept at bay by two locked gates outside the building.

Shouts of "cowards" and "Allahu Akbar" could be heard as they shook the main gate vigorously.

The Penang state assembly had kicked off its session yesterday.

Today, Lim presented the 2011 Budget for Penang in a three-hour session, and did not come out to meet the protestors.

One of the protestors chained himself to the gate, while others cheered him on. The crowd continued to shout obscenities at Lim and other state government officials like Deputy Chief Minister I Mansor Othman and exco member for religious affairs Abdul Malik Abul Kassim.

A placard carried by the demonstrators said: Kami tidak rela tanah kami dijadikan 'business' kerajaan negeri (We don't want our land to used for the state government's business).

Azian Ariffin, who represented the landowners in Balik Pulau, claimed that the group wanted to meet the chief minister in peace.

According to him, the protesters want to hand over a memorandum to him personally, not through his representative.

He said 29 lots owned by Malays and 12 by Chinese are being reclaimed to make way for an institution of higher learning.

Azian said that none of the landowners want to move out because the land is part of their legacy.

The matter stems from the state government's acquisition of more than 80ha of land at about RM100 million for an education hub of excellence.

In January, Lim had explained that it is a priority to develop Penang as a "high-tech, creative and innovative knowledge-based economy".

The project, he said, will attract international schools, university branch campuses, hospitality schools and science centres. Work is due to start in a year or two.

However, the state Umno has objected to the project on the basis that one campus will be that of a Singapore university, that Malay-owned land has been affected, and that compensation has been low.

One protester arrested

Half an hour later, several representatives were allowed into the building to meet Lim in stages to hand over their memorandum.

First to go in were Azian and Penang Pewaris (Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Warisan Ketuanan Melayu) chairperson Shahabuddin Ahmad, to hand over their memorandum protesting the Balik Pulau land acquisition.

This was followed by Penang Umno Youth chief Norman Dhalan, who planned to hand over the senior citizen appreciation programme money, which Umno had collected from the Malay community as they considered the money to be "haram".

Norman said the money was collected from about 600 people, which amount to about RM23,700. However, he was not certain exactly how much money he would be returning to the state government.

"It was just handed over to me from Umno to be returned to the state government. I am not sure exactly how much I have," he added.

Special assistant to Mansor, Rezal Huzairi Md Zaki and political secretary to Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy, Satees Muniandy, who met Norman, refused to accept the money, which was in a plastic bag.

Rezal and Satees insisted that the money should be accounted for and a list be provided on the individuals who have returned the money.

Norman was apparently upset that he could not return the money, and a minor skirmish erupted between him and Satees.

Ramasamy, who was later told about the incident, said he would talk to Satees about the matter and lodge a report with the police over the 'violence'.

'No prior consultation over renovation'

Meanwhile, Komtar Merchants Association vice-chairperson Mohamad Ghani Abdul Jiman, when met at outside the state assembly compound, expressed anger that the state wanted to renovate Komtar without prior consultation with the traders.

"They do not seem to want to compromise; all we are asking is to give us time until after Chinese New Year but they will not listen," added Mohamad Ghani, who claimed there were 60 protestors who joined the rally today.

At about 11.30am, the police began issuing warnings to the demonstrators to disperse.

One of the protesters, Ariff Ibrahim (left in pic), who is from Balik Pulau, refused to budge and shouted, "We will continue to defend Malay land."

He was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station. Ariff had earlier chained himself to the front gate of the assembly.

Earlier, at about 10am, PCM Action Team chief Tham Weng Fatt held a one-man rally at the gate, shouting at the top of his voice that the DAP-led government "had cheated the people".

He was extremely upset about not being allowed to enter the assembly compound.

"During BN's rule, anyone can come to the state assembly; even DAP people can be seen eating in the canteen," he shouted.

"I really regret what I see here today," he added.

Unruly protestors in contempt of court

Penang state assembly speaker Abdul Halim Hussain has condemned the protest by various groups this morning as being in "contempt" of the House.

He also described the event as being so unruly and noisy that it had disturbed this morning's proceedings.

Abdul Halim conceded the protestors' right to demonstrate peacefully and to express their views using the proper channels.

"However those who attended today's rally were unruly. They shook and pushed the gate to the compound. The gate nearly collapsed," he told a press conference at the assembly lobby.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, his deputy P Ramasamy and state exco for religious affairs Abdul Malik Abul Kassim were also present.

This morning, some 100 people representing Balik Pulau residents, Komtar traders and Parti Cinta Malaysia members had held a noisy demonstration in front of the state assembly building.

They were upset that they were not allowed to enter the compound to meet Lim, who was presenting the 2011 budget in the House.

Abdul Halim said he has written to state police chief Ayub Yaacob, with a copy to inspector-general of police Ismail Omar, the Home Ministry and Lim.

He is seeking assistance from the police, including the federal reserve unit, to stand by for security at upcoming sittings, including that scheduled for Monday.

Abdul Halim said this was the second such incident, the first being a protest against Lim (left) in May last year when his photograph was set on fire.

"If we allow unruly protestors without police presence, can you imagine what will happen if they gate-crash? … They would be charging into the state assembly while the proceedings are going on."

Abdul Halim said his office will hand over whatever evidence is available to the police, to help with investigations.

"We have audio recording and CCTV clips to prove their unruly act; we hope for police cooperation," he added.

'Evidence of mastermind'

Ramasamy said the police had been informed about today's protest and should have been present earlier.

European Union is being absurd!

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 10:08 AM PDT

Press freedom, human rights, minority rights and democracy are among the conditions set by the European Union before Malaysia can enter into a free trade agreement with them. Absurd and unbelievable!

Visiting European People's Party member Dr Werner Langen said at the Parliament lobby on Tuesday that the EU would be looking into this areas, which includes public procurement and social services.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz agreed with Langen, saying that Malaysia needed to look deeply into matters such as affirmative action. Not sure whether he agreed to the conditions or with what he only understood. We have yet to hear from Tok Pa, our MITI minister.

However, the EU dropped such conditions on Singapore and South Korea. Even Thailand, a country with so many coups and political instability, was given a leeway by having its democracy, human rights and public procument spared.

Such conditions do not reflect a well-composed EU. Many of its countries are still plagued with minority problems. Denmark, Germany, Spain, the UK, Holland and Switzerland still hold a bad record when it comes to minority treatment.

Minority Muslims and foreigners are still being oppressed and mistreated by local authorities, if not by the government for certain rules and restrictions.

Some countries still hide the fact that they too are actually racist and anti-immigrants. I wonder why Turkey (for its bad public procurement and political instabililty), among EU's newest member was accepted easily while Croatia (a peaceful and fast growing economy, its per capita among the highest in Europe) was slapped with so many pre-requisites.

Did Nazri give a good answer to the EU envoy? Did he try to explain the nature of our politics, our freedom of the Press and human rights to him? I doubt it (and why must he was chosen to attend to Langen).

And the fact that Langen also met with Anwar Ibrahim and Suhakam (apart from his meetings with Foreign Minister Anifah Aman and the Federal Land Development Authority) tells us everything. Suhakam, in collaboration with Anwar must have given Langen (and their allies in the West) a distorted picture.

Speak for your EU, Langen! Tell them that Malaysia is better off than some of its member countries in the context of human rights, Press freedom and minority rights. And we dont separate mosques from churches like what they are doing.

Malaysia has signed many FTAs with other countries and organisations. Only EU and the United States imposed silly and unacceptable conditions on us.

We wont lose anything if we dont sign up with them!

Animal-lovers are still seething with righteous anger over PET+BLOGSPOT'S breaking news revelation on Monday disclosing the killing of a therapy dog by the Ipoh City Council or MBI.

A 75-year-old woman from Taman Merdeka was about to walk her special companion of over ten years when it was suddenly mercilessly hunted and gunned down by MBI dogcatchers.

Apakah SPR Hendak Menipu, Ubah Pengiraan Ke Pusat Penjumlahan?

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 09:52 AM PDT

MCA does not fight for but fight against its own race! So-called Chinese lah!

Peruntukan Parlimen Diagihkan Kepada Ketua Bahagian UMNO, PAS Perlu Bertindak

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 07:58 AM PDT

SDO mengaku peruntukan diberi kepada ketua Umno bahagian

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Nov: "Sory YB!

"Apa wakil rakyat dulu buat?

"Duit kita dia dah rembat.

Bukan sekadar melawat kawasan tetapi menaburkan benih kosong kerana tiada peruntukan.

Organisasi PAS perlu disusun semula.

Why bother to vote for PAS, they dont have the allocation, they can't help us even a penny, tempelak mereka nanti.

Baca sini.

Manners of Sitting amongst others conversations

Listening in…and private conversations

  1. Be careful not to eavesdrop and listen to what others are saying. (Private and confidential)
  2. Eavesdropping is a bad habit and a sin.
  3. Imam Bukhari (رحمة الله عليه) reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "Whoever listens to people's conversation against their wishes will be punished by liquid lead being poured down their ears on the Day of Judgement".
  4. If the conversation is not private then it is allowed for you to contribute that which is necessary.
  5. It may be that this is the cause of hurt, hatred or rancour in the heart of others.
  6. It is an inappropriate manner to whisper something to the person next to you if you are in a group of three. Hence the 3rd person should not be isolated in this manner.
  7. Imam Malik and Abu Dawud reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:"No two shall exchange whispers in the presence of a third person".
  8. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) emphasised "No two…" in an assertive negative form, indicating that such a mistake is not only inappropriate but dispicable.
  9. In another hadith reported in Bukhari:"If you were three, two of you should not whisper to each other till you join other people, lest the third feel offended". Abdullah Ibn Umar (رضى الله عنه) was asked; "What if they are four?" "Then this doesn't matter", he answered; meaning it is not then offensive.
  10. Whispers are usually secrets,
  11. If a friend entrusted you with a secret, do not betray it. Do not tell even your best friend or closest relative.

In the company of elders

Generally one should seek_

  1. to benefit from the company and wisdom of the elders
  2. who are traditionally described as "A fruit at the end of the season"
  3. or "A sun setting among the clouds".

Soon they will depart and leave us behind.

  1. Be keen to attend the gatherings of elders, scholars, pious persons, nobles and relative so you may benefit.
  2. All to soon we lament at the departure of the irrecoverable loss and missed opportunities.
  3. When a person in your company speaks to you afce them, do not ignore them, give them their right of respect and be attentive.

The Manners of Conversation

In Surah al-Hajj, Allah described the believers:

  1. "And they have been guided to the purest of talk; and guided to the path of Him who is worthy of praise (22:24)
  2. When one speaks, one should speak only what befits a situation
  3.  If one is amongst the youngest present,
    • you should not speak unless you are asked to,
    • or you know that your talk will be well received, will benefit or please others.
    • And should not repeate the same story multiple times, every where
  4. One should not prolong speech, but be clear, concise and to the point rather than prolonging on and on.
  5. Anas (رضى الله عنه) reported;"The Prophet's (صلى الله عليه وسلم) speech was
    • clear
    • and succinct,
    • neither too long
    • nor too short,
    • and he disliked chattering
    • and ranting." (Sahih Bukhari)
  6.  Similarly it was reported in Bukhari and Muslim that 'Aisha (رضى الله عنها) said, "The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) spoke [so few words] that you could count his words."
  7.  If you hear the athān, stop talking, listen to it and respond to the call of Allāh.
  8.  Speech, and the adab of conversation reflects one's personality.

  9. It is speech and the actions of the tongue that may lead a person to the hellfire.
  10. The tongue can benefit and harm.

The wise one is He who thinks before speaking.

  1.  the tone,
  2.  the topic of conversation,
  3. the benefit of our speech
  4. and the adāb
  5. and ettiquettes of listening and debating,
  6. one's intention.
  7. When one speaks, the tongue should not just flow mindlessly,
  8. but one should think about the consequence first.

Watch your tone…

The Quran relates to us the advice of Luqman the sage to his son, directing him to speak in a gentle manner, speaking loudly is detested and ugly.
"And be moderate in thy pace, and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass."
(Surah Luqman: verse 19)
Similarly in verses two and three of Surah Hujarat:
O ye who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him in talk, as ye may speak aloud to one another lest your deeds become vain and ye perceive not. (2) Those that lower their voice in the presence of Allah's Messenger― their hearts has Allah tested for piety: for them is Forgiveness and a great Reward. (3)
Imam Bukhari (رحمة الله عليه) reported that 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (رضى الله عنه) said that after the revelation of this verse, whenever Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضى الله عنه) wanted to speak to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), he would talk almost in whispers and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) could hardly hear him and would ask him to repeat what he said (Sahih Bukhari).
Al Hafiz al-Dhahabi wrote in his biography of Imam ibn Sireen (رحمة الله عليه) the great scholar, "Whenever he was in his mother's presence, he would talk in such a hushed voice that you would think he was ill." (Tarikh al-Islam)
In his biography of Abdullah ibn Awn al-Basri (رحمة الله عليه), a student of Imam Ibn Sireen (رحمة الله عليه) and one of the famous scholars, he noted:
"One time his mother called him and because he responded with a voice louder than hers, he was fearful and repentant, thus freeing two slaves." (Ibid)
So it is important to only talk as loud as is necessary, and not to raise ones voice over the one whom one respects or is honourable.

Zaid, Chegu Bard lead in 3 Negeri divisions

Posted: 31 Oct 2010 07:32 PM PDT

By Zefry Dahalan

SEREMBAN: Zaid Ibrahim has outclassed Azmin Ali in the race for the PKR deputy presidency, at least in three of the party's divisions in Negeri Sembilan.

Zaid received 115 votes in Tampin, 49 in Rembau and 95 in Teluk Kemang against Azmin's six, seven and 36. The other contender, Mustafa Kamil Ayub, received two, four and three votes.

In the contest for PKR's youth leadership, Badrul Hisham Shaharin aka Chegu Bard wins in all three divisions, garnering 77 votes at Tampin, 39 in Rembau and 41 in Teluk Kemang.

In Rembau, Chegu Bard wiped out his rival, Shamsul Iskandar Mat Akin. No one there voted for Shamsul Iskandar. He got six votes in Tampin and four in Teluk Kemang.

The most popular vice-presidential hopefuls in Tampin and Teluk Kemang are Nurul Izzah Anwar and N Gobalakrishnan.

Tampin voted for Gobalakrishnan with 117 votes, Nurul Izzah (116), Fuziah Salleh (105) and Dr Mansor Othman (66).

Nurul Izzah leads with her 96 votes in Teluk Kemang, which gave 89 to Gobalakrishnan, 87 to Mansor Othman and 86 to Xavier Jayakumar.

She leads again in Rembau, with 44 votes against Fuziah's 39, Jonson Chong's 30 and Tian Chua's 26.

For the 20-seat supreme council, Rembau chose Abdul Rahman Yusof, Abang Zulkifli Abang Engkeh, Ahmad Nizam Hamid, Aminuddin Harun, Badrul Amin, Chai Tong Chai, Elizabeth Wong, Felicia Ling, Kalakau Untol, Low Chee Chong, M Ravi, Muzaffar Shah, Nicholas Bawin Anggat, Onn Abu Bakar, Rohani Bakar, Salma Ismail, Shariffuddin Budin, Siti Aishah, Suhaimi Said and Zulkifly Ibrahim.

In the race for deputy youth chief, Teja Assemblymen Chang Lih Kang is the leading contender in Tampin (79 votes) and Rembau (35 votes), where Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin received four and two votes. The result from Teluk Kemang is not yet available.

In the contests for chief and deputy chief of the women's wing, only the results from Rembau are available. Aminah Ferrar received 12 votes against incumbent Zuraida Kamaruddin's five. Another contender, Suraya Sudin, did not get any vote.

For the post of deputy women's chief, Asmah Abdul Kadir received nine votes and Rodziah Ismail six.

Azmin in overall lead

However the overall results of PKR's first round polls over the weekend was not in favour of Zaid as Azmin emerged with more than a 500-vote lead.

Azmin, largely seen as party de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's annointed successor, has garnerd 3,051 votes, as opposed to Zaid Ibrahim's 2,529 votes. The third contender, Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, managed to gain 1,149 votes.

These figures were released by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail during a press conference at the party headquarters today.

The next round of polls will take place next weekend.

Jual RM21,000 Untuk Seorang Bayi. Kegiatan Seorang Doktor Bergelar Datuk

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 01:30 AM PDT

-BH

Hillary Clinton dan politikus wanita

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 01:38 AM PDT

Daisy: How'd it play? Wasn't she fantastic?
Henry: Yeah, great. But they'd like to see her hair a little longer.

Islam In Malaysia: Perceptions & Facts (Muhammad Asri Zainul Abidin, Matahari Books, 2010)

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 12:34 AM PDT

This is the English edition of Dr. Asri's Mengemudi Bahtera Perubahan Minda, a compilation of his articles which originally appeared in Mingguan Malaysia. Dr. Asri sought, in those articles, to give a clear understanding of Islam and its practise in Malaysia which he argued has been hijacked by the forces of ignorance, superstition and blind adherence to religious leaders. Seeing as he wrote for a Malay broadsheet, at least half of the nation's people never read his thoughts on this important subject. It is therefore a commendable effort by Matahari Books for publishing an English edition and U-En Ng who did a wonderful job translating and annotating it.

With 47 of his articles collected here there is much to digest for the Muslim and non-Muslim reader alike. It isn't an academic tome but a straightforward, no BS book on the state of Islam in Malaysia. To put it succinctly, Dr. Asri believes Islam in Malaysia is in dire straits and needed to be rescued yesterday. Not necessarily rescued by political leaders or religious figures though as the good doctor argues that in many cases it is those authorities who are the most responsible for pulling Islam down to where it is now in Malaysia. No, everyone who considers him or herself a Muslim (regardless of social status) must take responsibility and practise Islam as it was practised by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In order to do that, Malaysian Muslims must totally shed the (mostly racial) prejudice, the superstitions many have associated with Islam and the attitude that the ustaz knows best and he must not be questioned.

Islam in Malaysia is, unfortunately, closely linked to the Malays. I say unfortunately because all the races have taken this as fact without question. Note that the Malaysian constitution states among other things that a person who practises Islam is a Malay. So much so that a Malaysian-Chinese who embraces Islam is seen by his/her Chinese brethren as 'masuk Melayu' (becoming Malay). This is so wrong it's not even funny. So what do we call the Malays who embrace Christianity? Masuk Orang Putih? or Keluar Melayu?

Some Malays also do not help the situation by upholding this racial theme. Dr. Asri relates in the book how some religious officials have refused to officiate a wedding of a non-Malay Muslim couple because the happy couple were not wearing a Malay style garb. Alamak! One wonders which school these officers graduated from and what did they actually learn while studying at that school.

But, Dr. Asri asks, what is there to be surprised about if non-Malays misunderstand Islam? Many low-income Malays visit churches instead of mosques for financial aid, food and shelter. Volunteers from Christian and Buddhist charities visit the sick in hospitals and help them with their daily needs regardless of the patient's faith or lack thereof. Where are the Muslim volunteers? Isn't giving charity and visiting the sick two of the most highly recommended practises in Islam? What do the Muslim charities do to help the orphans, for example? Usually these poor souls receive RM50 on Eid ul-Fitri and a visit from a local pop star who needs a PR boost.

There is even a widespread belief that meat from an animal slaughtered for sacrifice on Eid ul-Adha (Raya Haji) and meat for thanksgiving (akikah) is forbidden for non-Muslims. Islam however does not forbid non-Muslims from enjoying meat slaughtered for religious-linked feasts. Yet, the same Malays who prejudicially restrict non-Muslims from eating their meat have no problems sub-contracting their projects or selling their permits and licenses to non-Muslim towkays. Ouch.

It is clear from his writings that Dr. Asri gives the Malays a bashing (if he was a non-Malay he would probably have been arrested under the ISA years ago). But most of all he urges the Malay to question everything, for something that purports to be true should not be afraid to be questioned. Indeed Islam encourages inquiry. Misperceptions take root when no one stands up and says, "But what about…?".

This book does what it says on the cover; it tells what Islam actually teaches and how Islam is actually practised in Malaysia today. Non-Malays should pick up this book and learn a little something about the most misunderstood religion on Earth. Heck, Malays should pick this up as well come to think of it.

(This book will probably be on sale in all good bookshops by December but you can get it now from publisher Amir Muhammad and you can download three chapters for free as well. Details here.)

email dari seorang teman : Aktivis reformasi desak JPP PKR dikaji semula

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 08:16 PM PDT

Salam reformasi.

Keputusan Lintang Pukang: Kesilapan Manusia Atau Wujudnya Manipulasi?

Keputusan Kontroversi Pemilihan PKR: Azmin Kembali Dahului Pencabar

Manakala seorang lagi calon Mustaffa Kamil Ayub mendapat 1,271 undi.

Pemilihan PKR. Keputusan Lintang Pukang Petanda Buruk Untuk PKR

Sementelah lagi, Saifuddin was "not in the position" to make any statement or announcement regarding anything to do with the party election. Ia sepatutnya tugas JPP.

Alasannya kertas pencalonan tiba lambat....

90 peratus jemaah haji Malaysia wajib bayar dam

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 11:52 PM PDT

Buku 'The March To Putrajaya' Kini Di Internet

Posted: 31 Oct 2010 10:39 PM PDT

Buku yang diharamkan oleh Kementerian Dalam Negeri, "The March to Putrajaya – Malaysia's New Era is at Hand", karya Kim Quek kini boleh diakses menerusi internet, http://www.themarchtoputrajaya.com/.

Itulah PM Najib – Harga petrol RON97 naik lagi!

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 11:05 PM PDT

Kebanyakan rakyat baru nak sesuaikan diri (adjust nafas) selepas kenaikan 5 serangkai pertengahan Julai lalu. namun 'ambush' tengah malam semalam umpama taktik gerila yang menyentak rakyat semula.

Harakahdaily melaporkan bahawa

Jangan biarkan Malaysia menuju kehancuran akibat dambakan maksiat!

UMNO's banner war belittling PAS....

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 09:12 PM PDT

Two more days till crunch time and the BN propaganda machine has upped the ante of its campaigning in Galas. After the banner war it declared belittling PAS' track record in ruling Kelantan, posters now appear that attack the Islamic party's leaders and candidate. Posters have begun to appear on utility poles and walls depicting less than admirable allegations against prominent PAS leaders since two days ago.

One poster featured the image of Kelantan exco member Husam Musa and questioned the state government hold-up in federal land development agency Kesedar's housing projects. The posters say the housing schemes are being denied land by the state, the land going instead to PAS cronies. Another poster took a dig at the earlier khalwat allegations made against the party's candidate, this time questioning his marital status, the Malay phrase "Sudah kahwin ke belum?" adorning the leaflets posted around Galas.

In a daring move, another series of posters took a stab at Kelantan MB Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat himself. The posters titled "30 dalil kenapa Nik Aziz tak boleh jadi MB" questioned his fitness to rule the east coast state. While no BN logos adorn these posters, it is not difficult to suspect who it is that is peppering Galas with these posters, directly or by proxy.

It is not certain what the BN hopes to achieve with such blatant attacks against the respected local figures, especially with the hands of their own leaders being not as clean as they might have liked when it comes to skeletons in the closet and botched development. The ruling coalition or their 'supporters' may claim that this is in retaliation against the supposed 'attacks' against their candidate's humble educational background.

However, as one government observer remarked to Malaysiakini just after nomination day, it was Deputy Premier Muhyiddin Yassin himself who first highlighted the matter in his nomination speech, something even the observer himself though of as a mistake. "Why would you highlight your own weakness?," he asked in frustration.

Royal gamble

The issue was later picked up and defended by various BN leaders with no provocation from PAS. The Islamic party's leaders never harped on the issue, except in passing or while responding to questions from the press on the matter. One wonders if BN's highlighting of this tid-bit is an attempt to set up PAS for attack or to hide more serious problems with their candidate. All in all, BN would have done better if it had stuck to the issues of local problems and development concerns in Galas, which are very real issues that the PAS-led state government are struggling with. But posters are not the only proxy-attack launched by BN, as their online cyberwarriors and allied bloggers were the first to have drawn the royalty into the by-election tussle.

First with an article claiming that Kelantan Sultan Sultan Muhammad V is scheduled to visit the by-election-hit Galas and later with an article accusing the sultan of being a lackey of the PAS-led state government. The Kelantan palace has refuted rumours of a royal visit and the Umno-linked blogger has since apologised. Once more it is unclear what the BN is hoping to achieve by playing up the royal issue, as it may very well blow up in their collective faces, in a state where the royal family still holds sway over public opinion. One would do well to remember that the last time PAS swept Kelantan out off BN's hands nigh 20 years ago, rumour has it that it was "arahe seri paduka baginda", or on the advise of the king to the rakyat.

Police 'pick and detain'

Police action has also marred campaigning in Galas as the police detained for questioning several members of two groups for allegedly campaigning in Galas, though both groups, students from Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis) and activists from Malaysians for Beng Hock carried no political literature and were not promoting party messages. The students were there to observe the by-election and interact with locals, while the activists were present to campaign for justice for death-in-custody victims.

Interestingly enough the police did nothing when a group calling itself the 1Malaysia NGO recruited people to march through the streets of Galas with loudhailers and chants of "Satu Malaysia", distributing goodie bags to the public. The group was also alleged to have paid RM100 to those who took part. More interestingly, the group's coordinator, Sia Teck Keong, is Selangor MCA Youth deputy organising secretary and the party's Hulu Selangor division vice-chief. However, despite his political origins, he maintained that the 1Malaysia NGO is devoid of political funding or motivations. The police apprently believed him over the students' and activists' claims in their calculations of which group to pick and detain.

Petrol blunder

But despite the 'long knives' that the BN is drawing in the days near to the endgame, the sly move to increase the pump price of RON 97 petrol as Malaysians slept last night may actually provide fuel for PAS to ignite a late campaign swing. It is inconceivable for the petrol kiosk owners' association to have decided to increase the price on their own without at least consulting the government on such a strategic economic item.

This may open BN to the long knives of PAS and an angry rakyat. That is unless a chickenpox-riddled Premier Najib Abdul Razak decides to recover at the last minute and play the hero to reverse the petrol price hike when he returns to office suddenly tomorrow 'shocked' by the news.- Hazlan Zakaria
