Isu Hangat: Kerajaan Nafi Dakwaan Kiamat 2012 Akibat Perlanggaran Planet Nibiru Dengan Bumi

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 08:28 AM PST

Misteri anomali massa Neptune terus bertahan hingga tahun 1980.

Tahun 1966

Tahun 1976
Sebuah buku kontroversi berjudul "The twelfth Planet" diluncurkan oleh Zecharia Sitchin.

Namun ternyata media salah!

Tahun 1994.

Tahun 2003
Ramalan Nancy Lieder meleset. Mei 2003, dunia tidak kiamat. Nancy Lieder membetulkan ramalannya menjadi tahun 2012.

Tahun 2005

April 2006
Arti kata Planet didefinisikan ulang. Period orbit Eris hanya 556.7 tahun.

Tahun 2007 - sekarang

-xfile-enigma

Ada Buaya Tembaga Di Pantai Teluk Cempedak

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 07:08 AM PST

-Bernama

Does any civillian know what an HK MP5 is?

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 05:33 AM PST

The same one used by the Malaysian police.

Here you are: The Malaysian Police have a 30 round magazine. For the layman it means 30 bullets per magazine. I do not know the number of magazines they carry, in the Infantry, the Rangers, they carry 5 magazines. Of course, they carry boxes of ammo, to refill those magazines that have been expended. The Heckler & Koch MP5 is a sub machine gun with a blow back recoil operated roller-locked bolt that fires from a closed position. It is chambered for 9mm Parabellum with 10, 15, and 30 round box magazines as well as 110 round drum magazines available. The smooth recoil characteristics provide optimum control when firing bursts or full automatic. Its small size enables concealed carrying or for use in confined areas. It has proved to be very accurate and reliable, even under adverse conditions. Its maintenance requirements are minimal.

The H&K MP5 has a front sight post and a select-range rear peep sight. Optional accessories include night sights, scopes, and laser aiming devices. The sub machine gun weighs 6 3/4 lbs. (3.07kg) loaded, and is 19 1/3 inches (490mm) in length with stock minimized. Its cyclic rate of fire is 800 rounds/minute, its effective range is 656 feet (200 meters) and its muzzle velocity is 1312 feet/second (400 meters/second).

The safety selector on the MP5 has three positions, based on German spelling:

•S: Safe mode
•E: Semiautomatic
•F: Automatic

This is in relation to the kid shot by a trigger happy cop. In the Army some soldiers get sick listening to the "rules of engagement" whenever they go on duty, as they will have to probably deal with civilians. They can virtually read it out to you paragraph by paragraph. It is read by the Guard Commander every time they are given assignments.

This version was used by us, it had a silencer. Quiet death. Normally the members of the "Unit Combat Intelligence" used these versions, as they operated in 5 men teams. I used to command them.

Operational rules of engagement are easy, just kill whoever is in your area. Applicable to the threat and area in a Counter Insurgency situation, when we were at war with the Malayan Communist Party. Well, sub machine guns are not very accurate when fired from a speeding vehicle, unless of course you are a very well trained soldier. I do not think the Police are. This is in relation to Cop: My partner shot at Aminulrasyid. The Aminulrasyid Amzah shooting trial heard incriminating testimony today when the partner of accused Corporal Jenain Subi said the latter had indeed fired his Heckler and Koch MP5 at the 14-year old on Jalan Tarian. The sub-machine gun gives firepower, in this case against an innocent and adventurous kid, who never expected the Police to kill him.

Ulasan GB

Sekian, terima kasih.

Another positive child

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 05:12 AM PST

Remember Selvi, the homeless lady whose case was referred to us from Taiping Hospital before we started our support services there? She had been hospitalised for a few months when we visited her, and when we asked where she'd go when she's discharged, she told us she had nowhere to go.

Selvi has 5 children. The 2 younger ones, aged 5 and 6, were sent to an orphanage run by an NGO, while the older 3, aged 11, 12 and 13, stayed at a different shelter home.

When Selvi got discharged, it became a problem for us to get hold of her.  A fellow volunteer who works in Taiping Hospital took the address and phone number given to the hospital by Selvi before she was discharged. The address was that of her sister who stays in a nearby town. But calls to the number given never got through.

After a while, Selvi herself called the volunteer, saying she was not staying with her sister, and gave an address. Supposedly, the house was empty house belonging to a friend who wanted her to take care of the house.

When the volunteer tried to look for the house, there was no such address. Adoi, how lar?

Then we were told that her 6 year old daughter was hospitalised. But how were we to inform her about it when we didn't even know where she lived? She had defaulted her hospital appointments again and so we weren't able to meet her there either. Not much we could do.

Today a call came in on my hand phone from an unfamiliar number. It was a welfare officer from the district where Selvi's 2 younger children stay. The lady officer was asking if I knew of any homes which would take in HIV+ children as there was a child who had just recently been diagnosed HIV+ and the people at the home where the girl stays now is scared to take care of the little girl. So they referred the case to the welfare department and the lady officer who called me was the one who was assigned to handle the case.

When she mentioned that the orphanage was a private home run by an NGO, somehow it just clicked in my mind that this could be Selvi's child the officer was talking about.

Me: "Budak ni maknya ada lagi kan?"

Welfare Officer: "Dengarnya macam tu lah, tapi tak dapat dihubungi. Nama budak ni *Becky." (*not real name)

Me: "Oh kalau yang tu saya taulah. Kami pun memang tengah mencari mak dia."

Anyway, the officer asked me if I could tell her where she could send the child to. I wasn't able to answer off hand, so I told her I'd have to call her back. She immediately gave me her personal mobile number so that I could easily get in touch with her even when she's out of the office.

First thing was I got the fellow volunteer in Taiping Hospital to get more info on Becky's condition. Then I called another colleague in Ipoh to ask him to find out if there are any homes in Ipoh willing to accept an HIV+ child. There definitely isn't any home specifically for HIV children, but who knows, there may be those who are still willing to accept.

Then I remembered Becky's younger brother who stays in the same home. It didn't occur to me earlier to ask if they only intend to send Becky alone to another home, or are they planning to send both? They are already separated from their 3 older siblings, I certainly wouldn't want these 2 to be separated as well.

I decided to go to the Buddies Center to get the necessary contact numbers, and I also asked my colleague (the one whose favour I sought to  find out if there are any homes in Ipoh willing to accept Becky). Before long my colleague in Taiping Hospital sent me her report via SMS. Becky has a CD4 of only 21! Oh dear! She had been on treatment since November. Her younger brother however, has been confirmed negative.

I then called the welfare officer.

Apparently, the welfare officer thought the homes for HIV children are only meant for infected children. I told her that these homes would usually accept HIV affected children as well as the infected.

"Oh, saya kalau boleh memanglah tak nak pisahkan budak-budak tu!" she said.

OK good, now that matter is clear. Place them together if possible. I asked if she could arrange for the transportation to send the children to the shelter home if the place is out of Perak. I told her we are all volunteers and so it would be a bit difficult for us to find the time to go all the way. The officer said she'd have to ask her boss first, but assured me there shouldn't be any problem.

When my colleague arrived at the center, he told me he asked 2 homes in Ipoh, and both were not willing to accept HIV cases.

Frankly, after knowing that Becky's CD4 is so low at only 21, I thought probably it would be in Becky's best interest if she goes to a home where the caretakers have enough knowledge about HIV cases.

So I immediately called the lady in charge of a particular home in Selangor, specifically handling HIV cases. Usually for cases involving Muslim ladies/children, I'd be calling Rumah Solehah. This time since the clients involved are non-Muslims, I called up Rumah Jaireh. The lady in charge confirmed that she was willing to accept not only Becky and her younger brother, but also their mother if we manage to get hold of her.

After getting that confirmation, I immediately called the welfare officer again, but this time, there was no answer. So I sent her a text message, giving her the contact number of the lady in charge of the shelter home. If the welfare department is to send Becky and her brother to that home, then might as well, they deal direct with the home.

Meanwhile, I am still hopeful that we'd be able to get hold of Selvi, although frankly, I'm not even sure if she is still alive…

CROCODILE TEARS!

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 05:07 AM PST

Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, has been attempting to use the Borneo Post in increasingly desperate attempts to rescue his reputation over Pulau Bruit.  The fact that there has been a recent stream of announcements showing his sudden new concern for the poor islanders is a sure sign that the revelations that he and his family have stolen millions of ringgits of their land without compensation are causing him trouble!
How stupid do they think people are?

All Taibs sudden expressions of concerns came after we exposed him last week for stealing most of the land of Pulau Bruit and handing it to companies owned by himself and his family. We showed how his brothers made RM 40 million in 12 days by re-selling Native Customary Lands on the island, which Taib has organised for the government to sell to them for well below market price.  We later showed that he had removed the rest of the available land and given it to a company Delta Padi, in which he owns shares himself along with other members of his family!
So now, according to the Borneo Post he has come rushing to the Island to make amends!  The paper says that the Chief Minister "Apparently appalled by the depressing conditions in Pulau Bruit, has called for for immediate actions to be taken to improve health facilities for the people there".   What cheek given that he more than anyone is the cause of their problems!
Promotional articles in the Borneo Post
The government-controlled newspaper labours on trying to repair the damage for the Chief Minister, but only makes it worse with laughable attempts to portray the greedy old man as being caring and generous towards the islanders.  It reports that the Chief Minister made a dash to visit the area after the news broke about his thefts and  "found the people were mostly suffering from malnutrition and there were cases of high blood pressure even among the younger generation due to improper food intake and frequent consumption of salted fish"

The Chief Minister has decided to blame the monsoon season for these problems, but the rest of Sarawak knows that the blame lies with himself, since he took these people's forests and polluted their fishing areas through logging and palm plantations without providing compensation.  Just a little of the RM40 million taken by Taib's brothers could have made all the difference to these people's lives.  He could even now provide them with some money now to be more comfortable, but forget it.  He needs the people to be poor so that they stay desperate and intimidated and agree to vote for him in return for RM 20 ringgit (or so he hopes).
Vague promises about solving an 'emergency situation'
"Emergency Situation" - why did the Chief Minister who took the land need us to point it out?
The Post says that the Chief Minister admitted that the predicament of the people of Pulau Bruit is "an emergency situation".  However, instead of offering immediate financial help the old man in his usual way prefers to rely on vague talk of better times in the future (once he has completed his grand projects in Tanjung Manis, by which he hopes to enrich himself further by cutting down the rest of the mangrove areas and making factories).  And, rather than providing immediate sources of better food and fresh water, he offers wooly ideas about calling for the 'provision of better health facilities'.  He is laughably quoted as saying:
"If possible, I would like to appeal to the medical services in Sarawak tostart something for the people there"
If possible?!   Taib Mahmud has the power to take any land he likes and give it to himself, which is what he has done in Pulau Bruit.  So why does he act as if he has to politely request for someone in the medical services to' possibly do something' to make life better in Pulau Bruit!  If the people of Pulau Bruit are suffering from malnutrition then this needs a better response than such a woolly request.
Time to call in the UN?
Exclusively for the use of the CM - if there is a malnutrition emergency why not transport food in it?
A proper and caring government would be taking emergency action to meet an emergency situation.   Why does Taib not use some of his Hornbill jets that everyone knows he keeps for his own use to do some good and fly in proper foodstuffs?  That would address the malnutrition that he has personally caused.   Or will the State of Sarawak, Malaysia, one of the richest countries in the world in terms of resources, be forced to call in the UN to help its people, because the Chief Minister refuses to spend money on anyone but himself and his family?
We predict that the Chief Minister will be making many more pronouncements in the coming days and weeks before the election showing his 'concern' for Pulau Bruit, which he admits has up till now "escaped our radar".  There will be talk of hundreds of millions in 'projects'  for a start, but surely no one would be fooled into thinking the benefits of such money will go to the small population of the island.  Just one million handed directly to their needs would go a long way to relieving their situation, but Taib would prefer grand projects which he can put through his family companies!
But, we at Sarawak Report will be happy to take the credit for whatever does now come to the people in Pulau Buit.  This is because the Chief Minister, who managed to take their land but failed at the same time to notice their poverty until we pointed it out, seems to have woken up to the danger of mistreating his people in this way, now that we have brought it to public attention!

Remarkable

As you may already be aware, the latest political buzz has to do with Wikileaks.

Now, my personal opinion of Wikileaks? It's great that they are the watchers. But who watches them? Who is to say Wikileaks are not unlike 2 year old kids who felt different parts of the elephant and think that the elephant could be a snake, a rope or a wall? And be bribed with candies and toys? Yeah. They are not a democratic institution, and they answer to no one. The fact that they attacked Visa for stopping donations to Wikileaks is a demonstration of anarchism. Enough said.

Now, it could only happen to Malaysia that:

1) the government takes Wikileaks words as cast in stone with respect to diplomatic communique between Australia and Singapore that Anwar Ibrahim knew it was a trap and walked into one (because he thought it was fun to be caught again?? duh..)

2) the government rejects the same Wikileaks disclosure of Spore leaders' opinion of Malaysian leaders as being opportunists and incompetent.. as being merely grapevine. Oh actually they haven't quite made up their minds because they've just summoned Spore envoy to Msia to the the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to do some explaining. Spore side will of course say - it's all grapevine, it's not the whole story, and Malaysian leaders will make up with their counterparts.

Yet, they won't think twice that Anwar piece may equally be grapevine, and represents an incomplete picture too.

I want to tie this into the state of journalistic failure in this country.

You'll be amazed at the quality of partisan or otherwise incompetent journalism being practised in Utusan and TV3. Parliamentary committee on privileges today proposed to suspend Anwar over his accusation that 1Malaysia is developed by the same guys who did 1Israel. They conveniently left out the fact that Anwar wasn't called to testify. And he said he had evidence of Apco reproducing that particular template.

Look, I'm not supporting Anwar in a cult-like manner. If it were Nik Aziz, or Lim Kit Siang, or even Azmi (or had Zaid won the DP race in PKR, even him), and they are treated unfairly, that's called failure of natural justice. It ought to be condemned. The mainstream media practising double standards, that too ought to be condemned.

How did the mainstream media become so unruly?

I suspect the government wants to keep the people stupid and that's why the quality of our education system is as such that we are producing more unmarketable individuals. The stupid people who, unfortunately, buy into all these crap journalism. Who does not exercise a faculty that's probably alien to them, called the critical mind.

Many Malaysians, sad to say, will therefore buy into the half truths perpetrated by Utusan and TV3. And that keeps them in circulation.

Malaysians will continue to be screwed unless BN is toppled in the next big E. Personally, I think the chances are slim. Though I take to heart that at the very least, if RPK's prediction bears out, we're headed to a hung parliament. That's good. Any amount of power taken away from BN is always a good thing.

Seorang Polis Trafik Dipenjara 3 Tahun, Denda RM50,000 Kerana Rasuah

Anggota polis trafik dipenjara 3 tahun, denda RM50,000 kerana rasuah

Guarding, Nik Man

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 04:31 AM PST

I tamed this part, if this becomes a book it will be in it's original form, complete with expletives, offensive and not very politically correct or sensitive. I have changed the names of the people, so as not to hurt or humiliate them. Any resemblance to the dead or the living is pure coincidence. I hope I have covered myself.

I had a varied experience in jungle bashing, a little in Outward Bound School and some later experience, whilst waiting for my Malaysian Certificate of Education (Cambridge) results in the Cameron Highlands. I was there with the aborigines at a place called Sungai Palas. I learnt much about the jungle, their taboos, tracking and their way of life, I was seventeen years old then. Jungle training in RTC was very basic, endure the torture meted out to you.

We had all under gone rigorous training in immediate action drills, at section level which is the most basic of infantry tactics. Everything is a drill. One does not think, one does not ponder, reason nor indulge, in the luxury of reasoning. One reacts immediately with utmost urgency to counter any threat, it must be done by the book as taught in RTC any other action would be deemed a sacrilege. Of course a boot will be up yours, not figuratively but literally.

A section compromises of ten men, the first guy is known as a 1st Recce, the second guy is the 2nd Recce, 3rd person is the section commander, followed by the first rifleman, 2nd, 3rd and fourth respectively. Immediately behind is the first and second machine gunner, coming up last is the section 2nd in command. As we move in this formation our instructor would have stationed in place some guys from the demo platoon. These guys would fire upon us with blanks and throw thunder flashes at us. We will start conducting the immediate action drills on being fired upon.

We drop, dash, observe and return fire and try to neutralize the "enemy", we are helped along by our instructors, who will be cursing and swearing as we conduct these drills. These drills are conducted up to a hundred times a day. We are tired, thirsty, soaked to the skin in our sweat, even the webbing gear on us is soaked through.

Just doing the drills isn't good enough, looking weary or a slow reaction on somebody's part is a good enough excuse for punishment, in RTC they don't believe in individual punishment. It had to be Nik Man who blunders, he's the bane of any Army's nightmare. He gets lost in an assault. The Malaysian jungle is dense, gloomy, steaming and damp.

Its difficult to observe the next person, on the run, observation is limited to a bare three meters. Nik Man is barely coherent when he speaks in the national language, as it is laced very thickly with a Kelantanese accent; he was born and raised in the state of Kelantan. on the east coast of West Malaysia.

The people there do not speak the language one is taught in school. They are steeped in Islam and it has a very high rate of divorces compared to the rest of Malaysia. To add on to that, for the first time in my life I am meeting a guy from Kelantan, the plus factor was Nik Man could speak English.

The rest of the Kelantanese I avoided, I couldn't understand them at all, and they were thinking it was normal to refer to ethnic Indians with snide derogatory terms, like Keling or Hindu. Probably gives them a feeling of superiority due to their insecurity being with infidels. Since meeting up with the Kelantanese, at that moment in time I considered them to be foreigners, as they spoke a form of Malay which I found very incoherent. Most of my batch of recruits were educated until Standard 6.

Nik Man's purpose in joining the army, for the life of me I could not understand. He was slow in everything he did. The big brother thingy, in me decided to care for him. He was not only the target of verbal and physical abuse of instructors, but he was also victim of his own peers, some from his own very state, which is actually rare as the Kelantanese are a close knit community.

Nik Man had natural brownish coloring to his hair, probably his great grandmother was raped by some marauding foreign invader. He was gawky, tall, if someone wanted to shoot him one should not look him in the eye. His eyes were tinged with shades of blue and they always looked sad.

His father abandoned him when he was four years old. Grew up under the care of his grand parents. When his mother remarried, he stayed for awhile with his new father where he was subjected to abuse and ridicule. He went back to his grand parents. From there he made another screw up in his life by joining the army and at that instant screwing up our lives.

Looking for someone in the jungle is not easy, heard a hundred times about looking for a needle in a haystack? Its worst than that, you can't shout his name out its taboo to shout out someone's name. It is believed that the spirits of the jungle on hearing one's name would later call out to entice one to an uncertain future.

The other reason is that there were real live communist terrorists with live rounds compared to our blank bullets, which made noise, at close range the plastic can get embedded in our faces, that is when we bleed. It used to happen when some half baked wannabe soldier did and caused the accidental discharge of a firearm. Recruits could get away with that, we were green horns, unlike trained soldiers. Those days 10% of recruits could be written off during training, due to the ongoing insurgency. Training was realistic.

We spread out in a extended line within visual distance. We advanced slowly sweeping with our eyes. Our rifles, ten and a half pounds tugging at our arms, in an alert position. Any other position would invite the wrath of our beloved instructors. Wriggly creatures making their way up looking for openings to attach themselves on open flesh to feed on our blood.

Slimy and thin, it is not a called a jungle without leeches. Sweat oozing from the pores are a natural source of salt and sugar for tiny bees which buzz around our faces in the dozens. Sometimes stinging when brushed away. Our lips are parched dying for a drink, we had not replenished our water bottles since the afternoon and there was no stream in sight.

We trudge along looking for an asshole known as Nik Man while suppressing our hunger pangs, along with the urge to murder him. We are also accompanied with a litany of what pieces of shit we were, as soldiers, by a half crazed instructor.

The Thirteen Canaries, Paddy and Murphy

The following post sent to me by Angela is a bit naughty but I am posting it as a reminder of the follies of exaggerating/distorting truth and also for the sake of humor. Please do not take offense. Thanks! Have a lovely evening.

Three young women are at a cocktail party......Their talk turns to their position in life, and it's clear that they are trying to one-up each other.

The first woman says, "My husband is taking me to the French Riviera for two weeks," and then looks at the others with a superior demeanor.

The second woman says,"Well, my husband just bought me a new Mercedes," and looks about with considerable pride.

The third woman says,"Well, to be perfectly honest with you, we don't have much money and we don't have any material possessions.....But thirteen canaries can stand shoulder to shoulder on my husband's ere*t p****."

The first woman looks shamefaced and says, "Girls, I've got a confession to make. I was just trying to impress you.......We're not really going to the French Riviera......We're going to my parent's house for two weeks."

The second woman says, "Your honesty has shamed me.....To be honest, my husband didn't buy me a Mercedes......He bought me a Ford."

"Well," the third woman says, "I also have a confession to make.....Canary number thirteen has to stand on one leg."

Thanks to Freddie for the following joke!

Paddy and Murphy were talking one afternoon when Paddy tells Murphy,

"Ya know, I reckon I'm 'bout ready for a vacation. Only this year I'm gonna do it a little different. The last few years, I took your advice about where to go. Three years ago you said to go to Hawaii ... I went to Hawaii and Molly got pregnant.

Then two years ago, you told me to go to the Bahamas and Molly got pregnant again.

Last year you suggested Tahiti and darn me, if Molly didn't get pregnant again."

Murphy asks Paddy, "So, what you gonna do this year that's different?"

Paddy says, "This year I'm taking Molly with me."

Enjoy the evening! Cheers

Syarikat Induk SYABAS, Puncak Niaga Pecat 17 Kakitangannya

Pekerja Puncak Niaga Yang Dipecat Berhimpun Tuntut Keadilan

Tiga adik-beradik pula membawa poster berbunyi 'Ayahku Teraniaya Dibuang Kerja'.

-mstar

Ambedkar, Gandhi, caste and novels in the work of DR Nagaraj

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 10:00 PM PST

Two imagined voices suddenly pipe up midway through The Flaming Feet, the Kannada intellectual DR Nagaraj's book of essays on the history of the Dalit movement in India, and they turn out to be none other than those of the principal protagonists of the book: BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. For once we, as early twenty-first century readers, see them not spoken about, but speaking in their own voices, as if restored to life. Nagaraj, a great lover of fiction and a skilled interpreter of its capacity to tell the truth about the world even more powerfully than reasoned argument or autobiographical testimony – unusually for an Indian social scientist, his work is full of references to Indian novels – is found here taking the fiction writer's license to compose "two imaginary soliloquies".

It is 1997, the fiftieth anniversary of India's independence – an independence about which both men were, from the very beginning and for different reasons, sceptical. Ambedkar and Gandhi occupy adjoining rooms in heaven, and look down somewhat disconsolately on an India that has moved on. Ambedkar speaks of his immense antipathy to religious superstition and myth-making, and acknowledges that "my intimate enemy, that Gujarati Bania Mr.Gandhi, also does not like these things", even if Gandhi is always seen as a man of religion. Gandhi, meanwhile, is found contemplating "how Hind Swaraj would be if my nextdoor neighbour, the learned Babasaheb, had written it", and thinks that Ambedkar, a trained economist and the quintessential rationalist, would have found an enormous array of statistics to improve the argument.

Perhaps no one in the pantheon of Indian intellectuals had earned the right to appropriate Gandhi and Ambedkar in this fashion more than Nagaraj. Although clearly written from a Dalit perspective, Nagaraj's essays repeatedly dramatised, with the deepest understanding and attention to detail, the epic clash between the two over the kind of society and polity that would finally grant Dalits a life of dignity and self-respect.

For Gandhi, this could happen only if high-caste Hindus examined their consciences, took account of the historic wrongs committed against Dalits, and experienced "a conversion of the heart" that made them redress these injustices. Gandhi's method seemed idealistic, but was in its own way practical, trying somehow to identify "simultaneously both with caste Hindu society and the untouchable" so as not to lose one or the other.

Nagaraj grants that this was an enormous step forward for upper-caste Hinduism, but remains sharply critical of it. He holds that the Gandhian project had no real role for untouchables themselves, once again making them spectators to history in a drama in which high-castes were the chief protagonists, experiencing the guilt of a tragic hero and acting upon it. The Gandhian appellation for Dalits – "Harijan", or the child of God – was not so much a generous as a patronising one.

In contrast to Gandhi's language of conscience (what Nagaraj acutely calls the mode of self-purification), Ambedkar spoke the language of rights and of political agitation (or the mode of self-respect). While Gandhi wished to bind Hindu society into a refashioned whole, Ambedkar's vision was of a complete break with Hindu society and all its encrusted modes of viewing the beleaguered and alienated masses on its margins. Ambedkar wanted the Dalit to stop being a subject in history and start becoming an agent, thereby "eliminating dependence on mercy and benevolence". The modern systems of democracy, rights, political suffrage, and the nation-state allowed Dalits all this, while the traditional village panchayat never had.

This bifurcation in views set up one of the pivotal clashes of modern Indian history: the disagreement in 1933 between Gandhi and Ambedkar over the issue of separate electorates for untouchables, which Ambedkar desired deeply. By launching a fast unto death in Yeravada Jail over this issue, Gandhi forced Ambedkar's hand, and had his own way. But even if Gandhi won the immediate battle, the larger war over the next eight decades for the Dalit view of self and the world has been won by Ambedkar, whose vision of aggressive self-mobilization and minoritization has found a variety of expressions in Indian politics and public life, especially since the seventies.

But, Nagaraj acknowledges, even if Dalits have won themselves new rights and greater security, especially from upper-caste violence, the result is not so much a rapprochement but rather a kind of detente. The structure of caste society remains basically unchanged from the top, and the peace achieved is a fragile one – it needs a dose of Gandhi to convert it into something more meaningful. In this way, as the scholar Ashis Nandy remarks in a short foreword, Nagaraj attempts heroically to reconcile Ambedkar and Gandhi. This posthumously published book, the only one written by Nagaraj, is a memorable examination of the Dalit encounter with history and modernity, rage and healing.

One of the pleasures of reading Nagaraj is his constant awareness of local contexts and frames to ideas which, over time, we have come to see in a somewhat general or pan-Indian way (this applies even to the word "Dalit"). Here he is, for example, on the specific roots of Ambedkarism in Maharashtra and in ideas Ambedkar adapted from his western educaion, and on other "proto-Dalit" movements which over time have become invisible in history:
Untouchable activism, finally, came into being only with the arrival upon the scene of Ambedkar, a Maharashtra Mahar untouchable. However, the proto-Dalit phase is under-studied in modern Indian history; in this phase, and afterwards too, many other models of lower-caste revolt were active and disappeared only after the decisive victory of Ambedkarism over other competing discourses to define and shape the identity of Dalit politics. For instance, in order to get an accurate and comprehensive picture of the emergence and consolidation of Shudra identity in general and Dalit identity in particular, we must study the insider culturalist-rebel model of Narayana Guru, the religious reformer of Kerala; the model of Manguram of Punjab; and the South Indian model of gradualism. Only then will we arrive at a deeper understanding of the specific strengths of the Ambedkarite paradigms.
Another virtue of Nagaraj's work is his reluctance to restrict himself solely to an empirical style of argument. He is an adventurous rather than a safe writer. Sometimes he advances by applying a vivid metaphorical imagination to the reading of history, and very often he uses examples from Kannada novels, plays, and poems to illustrate particular cruxes and dilemmas in Dalit thought and the representation of Dalits (in an essay on representations of Gandhi, Nandy writes of how he follows in the tracks of Nagaraj, "who loved to claim, following William Blake, that stylised exaggeration could be a path to wisdom"). The Flaming Feet is full of allusions to the work of Shivaram Karanth (whose 1931 novel Chomana Dudi Nagaraj calls "perhaps the earliest Kannada novel to explore the theme of untouchablity"), Kuvempu, UR Ananthamurthy, Devanuru Mahadeva, and the radical Dalit poet Siddalingaiah. These allow us to glimpse a literary universe with very different themes and tropes than those thrown up by Indian fiction in English. Although Nagaraj very rarely offers close readings of literary texts at the level of word or phrase, he is frequently stimulating and provocative when looking at them at the level of ideas and thought systems. Here he is, for instance, on Devanuru Mahadeva's Kannada novel Kusumabale, which he compares to Ananthamurthy's much more well-known English novel Samskara:
While studying the narrative technique of the novel, an inevitable question came to my mind. Does the cosmology of lower castes mean the death of the realist novel? ...I have always been nagged by the doubt that realism can provide full justice to the collective psyche and worldview of the lower castes. Even at its best, realism can only, in our context, reflect and accommodate the rationalist and empirical worldviews of the modern middle class. It can only deal with untouchability as a theme. The life of untouchables and other lower castes –in a total sense –has always remained outside the patterns of realism. If images are the distillation of worldviews, then naturally realism can only create images out of human situations. Images do not appear there as the synthesis of myth and history. Realism can only transform history into fiction. In fact, the realist novel is even seen as a fictional strategy to appropriate a form of history wherein, for example, a cot cannot be made to talk in an autobiographical vein. in Kusumabale, as in folk tales, by contrast, an ill-used cot tells the story of the decadence of the family to which it belongs.

Such restrictions [placed on writers by the realist novel] do not merely reflect the aesthetic rules of a narrative game. They are basically the restrictions of philosophy and ideology. Even if the realms of experiences and worldviews barred by realism seek entry into the fictional world, they are permitted only after making sure that they do not wreck the narrative. It is without argument that their philosophical explanation has no legitimacy in this context: irrational structure are allowed, but only in order to be monitored by the inbuilt rationality of the realist novel.

The Flaming Feet is scheduled for publication in America early in 2011. A essay by Ramachandra Guha on Nagaraj is here, and a long essay by Nagaraj, "Critical Tensions in the History of Kannada Literary Culture", can be found in Sheldon Pollock's massive anthology Literary Cultures in History: Reconstructions From South Asia.

And here are some older Middle Stage posts on Indian history and politics: "On Mukul Kesavan's The Ugliness of the Indian Male", "Mark Tully and India", "Krishna Kripalani's Faith and Frivolity", "Jawaharlal Nehru As A Writer of English Prose", "Ramin Jahanbegloo on Gandhi's concept of freedom", "On the speeches of BR Ambedkar", "On Gandhi's autobiography", "Talking India With Ashis Nandy", "Harsh Mander and Gujarat", "Amartya Sen's large India", and "Utpal Dutt on Theatre and Film".

Khir Toyo - WikiLeaks are mere diplomatic gossips not to be taken seriously....

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 11:43 PM PST

Recently-leaked US diplomatic cables which referred to several Malaysia personalities should not be regarded as facts, said former Selangor menteri besar Dr Khir Toyo.

Referring to the cable on Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial provided by whistleblower website WikiLeaks to the Sydney Morning Herald, Khir added that such information should be regarded as "diplomatic gossip".

"What was recorded in the relevant diplomatic notes were discussions and gossip that has been common in Malaysia for years. "It was merely raised again by Singaporean leaders to diplomats from other countries and it became a classified diplomatic document for the United States. "This does not mean that it is true, let alone factual," said Khir in a posting on his blog today.

He explained that diplomatic notes more often recorded the diplomat's perceptions which may not necessarily be true. In the case of Singapore, Khir pointed out that the cables do not provide any evidence to back the claims.

'WikiLeaks might confuse people'

He added that if issues raised by WikiLeaks were used overzealously, it would have a serious effect on the public and some court cases. "I fear that there are some people who are confused about WikiLeaks and takes it as facts which will later influence their decisions," he said.
