Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:02 AM PST

OMG, it's Hard Rock Hotel again. If you are a frequent visitor to my blog, you might already seen a few post about my visit to Hard Rock Hotel, Penang. Haha. Sorry lah, just sharing my life and it's true that I went there again. I am kinda like a fan of Hard Rock Hotel, 's toilet.

If I do go to Batu Ferringhi to shop at the night market or to eat, and I wanted to go to the toilet to pee or shit, I will look for Hard Rock Hotel, so damn awesome. I was actually on a short trip to Batu Ferringhi for fun with dearest Hueisean then I felt like going to the toilet, so Hard Rock Hotel we went.

And that night, I brought my DSLR with me so it's time to shoot shoot some photos and also enjoy some nice rocking live band music at the hotel lobby.

It was two young boy, a boy was drumming and a boy was on guitar and vocal. I got to say, they were awesome, singing lot's of nice pop tunes, entertaining hotel and non-hotel guest, like us. Haha.

Then, it's shoot shoot time of the sweet sweet girl.

And here we go, I say good night from here. So late already.

Better be careful....

Menolak Tawaran, Chegubard Akhirnya Terpaksa Mempertahankan Prinsip Serta Keadilan Yang Di Tuntut Terhadap Aduan Semasa Pemilihan 2010 !

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:51 AM PST

Sumbangan BolehTetap Di Buat Tanpa Jawatan

Budaya Pemilihan Kotor Perlulah Diperbetulkan

Juarai hati anak muda: Pengaruh SAMM mampu tenggelamkan AMK : ureka.asia

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:48 AM PST

A Rotten Future Or What?

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:06 AM PST

Today, I came across THIS LINK on the third issue of The Malaysia Economic Monitor (themed Inclusive Growth),November 2010 issued by the World Bank. The Preface of this 118-page report explained that the Government of Malaysia and the World Bank set up a knowledge partnership centered on the policy objective of transforming Malaysia into a high-income economy last year.

It said that "The Malaysia Economic Monitor series is a key pillar in this partnership and serves as a platform for public discussion, analysis, and the sharing of knowledge on the challenges facing Malaysia in achieving this objective."

The Executive Summary made the following points which I have extracted from THIS LINK and rearranged in bulleted format for easier reading:
  • Following a spectacular year-on-year recovery, the growth momentum of the Malaysian economy is ebbing.
  • After a period of crisis-related volatility, the economy transitioned into more normal patterns of growth: the pronounced inventory cycle began to subside, private consumption became more buoyant, and fixed investment picked up as capacity utilization gaps were closed.
  • Interrupting this process was the return of external weakness, with exports slowing in the second quarter and then contracting. Since import demand for export processing did not react immediately, inventory volatility picked up again.
  • As growth patterns normalized, inflation has recovered. But, the small rise in inflation, reaching 2.1 percent in August, was largely due to food prices, with little impact from non-food subsidy reforms. Bank Negara pre-emptively responded to the recovery in activity and inflation by raising the policy rate by 75 basis points between February and July to 2.75 percent.
  • Rates have subsequently remained flat, while a marked, yet relatively smooth, Ringgit appreciation helped contain price pressures. Asset price strength reflected resurgent investment inflows, as in the region, but outwards direct investment rose too. Steps were taken to liberalize the exchange rate regime, mainly to lower trade transaction costs.
  • Fiscal policy has also started to normalize. The 2011 Budget targets a deficit of 5.4 percent of GDP, down from 5.6 percent in 2010 and 7 percent in 2009.
  • The Government embarked on a first step to systematically reform subsidies in mid-July, raising energy prices, including gasoline and household gas, and sugar prices moderately. It also announced plans to adjust regulated fuel prices monthly, as a step towards indexation, but to date there have been no further adjustments.
  • Economic activity is expected to further decelerate in the second half of 2010.
  • Given the low base in 2009, growth of 7.4 percent is expected for 2010, before slowing to 4.8 percent in 2011. Domestic demand is set to continue to drive near-term growth.
  • The strength of global demand, both from the G3 and China, remains a key source of uncertainty. In addition, domestic sentiment is sensitive to reform progress relative to expectations while uncertainty over the impact of the ongoing reforms and associated investments further complicates near-term forecasting.
  • Achieving Malaysia's Vision 2020 goal of high-income status requires average growth of 6 percent during the 10th Malaysia Plan period — a marked improvement on the 4.4 percent achieved over 2006-2010. The challenge is not only to boost the level of growth but to ensure that growth is inclusive and sustainable.
  • The policies and projects of the Economic Transformation Program are key to meeting this challenge through greater, and higher-quality, investment and productivity improvements.
  • Risks to medium-term growth remain - the extent of reform implementation and progress on fiscal consolidation.
  • The Government is taking steps to address both areas, but risks remain, both upside and downside. Until solid implementation of reforms is seen there is unlikely to be a groundswell of positive sentiment of foreign investors towards Malaysia.
  • In addition to the sustainability of public finances, the quality of public service delivery will be a crucial determinant of the success of the Government's plans.

Suffice to say the above points DO NOT paint a pretty picture for our future. It is imperative that as many as possible write and blog about this so that the status quo do not launch the next GE until and unless they put things in order.

Since the preface of this report confirms it is the collaborated effort of the Malaysian government and the World Bank, it has to be quite accurate in its analysis.

Now if so, judging from current trends and the way policies are being implemented or not being implemented, it is highly likely that some quarters will bulldoze their way through to launching the next GE as soon as possible BEFORE the rakyat realize how bad is the situation. If this scenario happens, it is sure suicide to launch the next GE without dealing with the problems as identified in the report. But then again, how many rakyat will read this 118-page report???

You have to!!! Please...at least speed read and see what they have to say in this official document.

In the section on Raising Economy-Wide Income-Earning Opportunities (page 12) says:

Inclusive growth rests on a vibrant economy that generates plenty of opportunities for all. To revitalize its weakening engine of growth and generate more economic opportunities, the Malaysian economy is in dire need of further investment climate improvements.

Important in this respect are labor market reforms that raise the level of employment, strengthen the labor market matching process, and reduce the degree of informality.

On December 18th, it was reported HERE that our Deputy Prime Minister said:

"The country has met the target of eradicating abject poverty this year following proactive action taken by the government to assist the affected group.

He said that based on the latest report received through the Government Transformation Programme on poverty, the achievement had been very encouraging.

"Although in this matter, the abject poor group can be said to be dynamic, not static, if the figure is zero today, maybe tomorrow there will be one or two entering the group due to sickness and so on. But in terms of actual measurement, we have met the target, and this is most encouraging," he said after attending a poverty eradication programme "End the Poverty Era" organised by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development at the Muar district level here.

However, Page 12 of the report says this:

While Malaysia has made great strides in reducing poverty and inequality over the last four decades, significant challenges remain.

Deep pockets of poverty continue to exist and, despite notable reductions in the 1970s and 1980s, inequality has leveled out at comparatively high levels. A large share of households lives on low income levels at less than half of median income.

New challenges are also emerging as Malaysia prepares itself to become a high-income economy.

Raising the knowledge intensity of economic activity may accentuate income disparities across skill levels.
Fostering geographical concentration may amplify urban-rural differences.

Restructuring the sources of growth and introducing greater competition may raise the demand for social protection.

Given these challenges —existing and emerging—how can Malaysia fully meet the aspiration of an inclusive society?

______________

Do pay careful attention to the diagrams in Page 13 that give a graphic account of the situations.

As for the section on Promoting Investment in Human Capital,it is VERY DEPRESSING to read the following section from the report at the end of Page 12:

Many Malaysians cannot take advantage of income-earning opportunities because they lack the skills to do so. Some never got them in the first place, despite massive investments in education.

*My comment: So what did the writer mean by 'some never got them in the first place???? And how massive were those investments in education???

2. For others, skill needs have changed more quickly than the availability of educational and training opportunities. This points to the need to: strengthen—the provision and quality of—basic education in under served areas, vocational training, as well as employer and industry-led skills development.

*My comment: What will our leaders do about those recommendations and can they account for the fruit of their labor in those sectors?

Page 17-23 is rather technical. I just want to highlight the following section which I extracted from page 29:

INFLATION HAS RISEN GRADUALLY, BUT REMAINS BENIGN

Malaysia's consumer price inflation rose modestly through the first half of 2010. By August the
headline inflation had risen to 2.1 percent year-on-year (yoy) from around 1.3 percent in Q1, and monthly inflation rates show a similar rising pattern (Figure 1.24).

Most other countries experienced a similar pattern, with varying reasons (Figure 1.25). The adjustment of some regulated prices towards the economic cost of those goods explains most of the rise in Malaysia's headline inflation, especially since June.

Food prices led the rise in consumers' cost of living. Food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation
increased from 1.4 to 3.1 percent from Q1 to August (yoy) (Figure 1.26). Fresh meat prices drove much of this increase, rising by 4.4 percent in the year to August, and the government responded in August by issuing licenses to import chicken to supplement domestic supply. Sugar is one of the most significantly subsidized food items, particularly in light of the rise in global prices this year.

This subsidy adjustment lifted its price by 14.3 percent in August, and this affected other confectionery prices too. Meanwhile weather-related increases in global grains prices had little impact on Malaysian food prices by Q3. While bakery goods prices rose by 3.0 percent in August, only 2.5 percent of the average Malaysian household's spending is on grains other than rice, and government involvement in the wholesale market is likely to limit the impact from the disruptions to global supply.

*end of excerpt
________________

It is a long report which I urge each of you to read at your leisure to better understand the state of economic affairs in our country. Page 43 of the report states:

THE UNEVEN PATH TO ECONOMIC RECOVERY

The recovery in global growth in 2010 has been steady, albeit unspectacular and uneven. As policy stimuli are withdrawn, this trend is expected to continue. Growth in high income economies is expected to be lower over the medium term than before the crisis.

Recent data releases and leading indicators point to the fragility of the US recovery. The weakness in labor markets (and residential property sector) is unlikely to turn around in the near-term. Consumer confidence has dipped in recent months (Figure 2.1). However, the impact of its debt crisis on Eurozone growth as a whole has been relatively muted.

*end of excerpt
______________

Page 91 of the report also states:

Having achieved almost universal access to basic education, Malaysia is now focusing on improving the quality of that education, which could be improved further both in terms of raising average levels and reducing the considerable dispersion in equality. Arguably, knowledge and skills acquired at the basic education phase has great implication on the individual's capability for continuous learning, adaptability to a changing labor market environment, creativity, and capacity to produce. Performance of Malaysia's basic education has shown some worrying signs and significant disparity across different segments of the population.

Despite scoring higher than other middle-income countries in critical subjects like mathematics, the test scores of Malaysia's students have declined over time. Also, compared with higher-income economies in East Asia and other countries around the world, Malaysia continues to lag behind in mathematics scores (Figure 3.24).

These results indicate not only that students—and eventually workers—are not ready to compete with students from higher income countries but also that their competitiveness in mathematics has been worsening over time.

What a depressing finding!!! The Education Ministry must tell us what they intend to do with that finding and their plans to improve our children's international competitiveness. Perish the thought of making historical changes with the History debate and do something that will put us on the world map for the RIGHT REASONS!!! We do not need waffling here and there with regards to policies made or changed at the whims and fancies of anyone but we need serious, basic and practical policies that are designed for the development of our children to be ready to compete in the international market!!!

Page 93 of the report shows that there is a mismatch between skills supplied and needed. For sure, the education sector plays a vital role here and must rise to the occasion.

I make no apologies for this very lengthy post. I would have written more but the report says it all most elegantly. Our leaders owe it to us to tell us what are their plans for the people in relation to the findings in this report. They have to - if they want to remain in power for the right reasons!

Perhaps they could pay special attention to the concluding paragraph of the report which I have extracted from page 108:

Making Programs Results-Focused and Fostering a Learning Culture

The monitoring and evaluation of social protection programs needs to be strengthened significantly to ensure that they are judged on the basis of how well they perform.

The factors that should be monitored include the timeliness and quality of information on the program's inputs, its implementation status, and the outputs it has delivered. Detailed analysis of household data will yield information on the program's coverage and incidence, as well as on how well the program is reaching its targeted beneficiaries.

It will also make it possible to assess the program's impact on the consumption and well being of beneficiaries. Solid and rigorous impact evaluation is also necessary to assess the impact of particular interventions.

Much of the information needed for such evaluations is collected but severely under-used in policymaking and program management. What is needed are a results-focused management requirement for all interventions, a well developed monitoring and evaluation system, and a strengthened capacity of the implementing agencies (and government) to assess and to learn from experiences.

Sit Ferry Go Raja Uda Eat Dinner

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:02 AM PST

On a lovely dating night, I went over to Raja Uda, Butterworth with Hueisean. It started getting bored with food in Penang and have decided to take the vehicle onto the ferry, ferrying from the island to the mainland to seek for alternative food.

We were actually quite excited to dine at the famous tomyam noodle place on Jalan Raja Uda, unfortunately, both the famous stall didn't open that night. I have to stop by the road side, go Google search where to eat.

It was not my first ferry ride or 2nd or 3rd, it fifth or sixth I think. Haha. It's not that excited anymore, but still I wanted to go down the car to take some snapshot so it could turn into a memory or something. It's always full of car at every time of the day.

Blah. Camwhore a bit.

Then we reached Who's Bryan Cafe at Raja Uda. =D

and whoever says that the sultan (king) should be apolitical?  as in the case of the perak sultan, and now the selangor sultan, they are not! they are siding umno… or as malaysia chronicles put it 'pushing umno's agenda' in the selangor sultan case.   why ah, we wonder. as in the case of perak, we read here and there some theories (kind of like where PM said 'you scratch my back, i scratch your back', something to do with the king… or his family's buisness).  now the selangor sultan…. go read this blog to know the 'truth' as claim by the blogger.  interesting 'truth' revealed there.

Whoever that made this shoe print on the wall... His or her leg should be chopped off... Why? Because the wall has just painted and it's so white. Not even one week, this shoe print has appeared on this wall.

Anyway, this is another things that Malaysian like to do, put their artistic shoe print on the clean wall... Sigh~

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year 2011 (Part 3)

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 08:14 AM PST

How did I spend my Christmas Day? As in previous years, went back to my late father-in-law's kampung (village) at Bantayan, Tamparuli to visit Christian relatives.

Bantayan and Damat next to it is unique in the sense that the majority of the villagers are Dusun people (they prefer to be called that instead of Kadazan) but some of them are Muslims. Thus, quite a number of the crowd that day were Muslims. Similarly, during Hari Raya half of the crowd would be Christians. Good example of 1Malaysia, I think.

To be exact they are Dusun Lotud, a unique sub-community of the Kadazandusun found only in the Tuaran district which includes the Tamparuli sub-district. Unique in their dialect as opposed to the Kadazan spoken in Penampang. Unique in their traditional costume and dance, the Sumayau, as opposed to the Sumazau of Penampang. Thus, it is quite understandable that they want to remain as Dusuns. After all, we are living in a free world and it is their right.

As usual on that day, there was of course music and singing. But not just Christmas songs. The ever popular song and dance is still Poco-Poco. The whole afternoon that I was there, this Indonesian song was played at least a few times and each time the dance floor was full., by both the young and old. Mind you, 90% of the people occupying the dance floor were Dusuns - far from being Indonesians.

Which sets me thinking - that Poco-Poco is still very much in fashion ever in our villages, a few years after it first 'landed' in Sabah from our neighbouring country. It's just like fashion. You can't kill it. So just let it disappear by itself over time, just like fashion.

So I just don't understand so was the fuss all about when certain quarters querried, a couple of years ago I think, why Poco-Poco was incorporated as one of the dances during the State-level Harvest Festival or Kaamatan celebration at Hongkod Koisaan, the KDCA building in Penampang. Come all, let us be more civilized and open-minded. Don't be narrow-minded. Gone were the days of Sabah for Sabahans - PBS and more recently SAPP (Batu Sapi) found that out the hard way. A Poco-Poco dance lasting a few minutes among a score of other dances can't hurt, can it? It can't be Sumazau the whole day, can it? Otherwise even the tourists would be bored.

I know some people may not like what I write but I stand by my conviction. To these people, my advice is simple - stop reading and move on to another blog. As the Malay saying goes, "Dunia masih luas" (the world is still wide). Don't waste your time or energy expecting an apology from me because you won't get any. You are entitled to your opinion which I respect but I am entitled to mine. To borrow the words of the late Datuk Felix Golingi: "I won't use my importance to put other people down, but neither will I let other people to use their importance to put me down!"

The Poco-Poco reminds me of my childhood and teenage days as a bandboy. Those days, the 'dance of the day' during parties and other social functions would be Joget or in those days known locally as Dendang. Each time the music starts, the dance floor is full, just like the Poco-Poco. But I am sure the Joget and Dendang were not invented by Sabahans (or those days North Borneons). They originated from Indonesia and the then Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia). Nobody made noise then.

All they care is it is everybody's favourite dance. No problem. But nowadays the Joget and Dendang are no longer fashionable. They have been replaced by the Poco-Poco. As simple as that. So what's the problem? Over time it will pass and the Poco-Poco will be overtaken by something else.

And this change may come sooner than we think. That afternoon in Bantayan, apart from the Poco-Poco, two other songs were played over and over again. Each time these two songs were played, a goup of kids would, without being shy, take to the floor. Before long the adults joined them. And they could not even understand the meaning of the words because they were Bajau songs! One was sung by a Bajau singer called Den Bisa, I was told, and the other by a Kadazan or Dusun from Kota Belud! See my point?

I took video (amateur standard lah) of these songs/dances and will put them in my next posts after I uploaded them to You Tube. Then you will know what I mean.

Till then, bye. Oh ya, by the way, the picture - my family, in-laws, nephews, and nieces at Bantayan. In the foreground (right) is the 'matriarch' of the family.

UG Siri Kedua? TGNA Tidak Dedahkan Apa-apa.

Ada perkara dibincang dengan PM

KOTA BHARU, 3 Jan: Menteri Besar Kelantan, Tuan Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, mengakui bertemu Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Razak akhir Disember lalu.

Pemimpin PAS-Umno 'bertemu', cakap-cakap kerjasama perpaduan muncul lagi

Setiausaha Politik Menteri Besar Kelantan, Wan Nik Wan Yussof ketika dihubungi mengesahkan Nik Aziz hadir tetapi menegaskan, kehadiran beliau hanya atas jemputan menghadiri majlis santapan di Istana Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur.

Ketika dihubungi The Malaysian Insider, Fatah enggan mengulas lanjut mengenai dakwaan beliau.

Kita yakin TGNA tegas dengan prinsipnya mengenai UG iaitu - NTBL - No time bo layan

Berita terbaru:

Nik Aziz: Pak Lah bawa titah mengadap Agong

Ia bermula apabila laporan tabloid mingguan Siasah - berjudul "Nik Aziz, Najib menghadap Agong?"

-mk

Harga RON97 Naik, Akan Diikuti RON95 Dan Minyak Masak

"Ya, benar harga RON97 naik 10 sen esok, bermakna mulai tengah malam ini, hanya membabitkan kenaikan RON97," kata sumber industri ketika dihubungi The Malaysian Insider.

-TMI

"Belian panik biasanya berlaku apabila tercetus khabar-khabar angin tentang kenaikan harga.

Harga semasa MSM berlegar sekitar RM3,800 setan metrik.

The children, their schooling, and their fees…

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 05:51 AM PST

With schools just reopened yesterday, many of "my" children just got their list of workbooks and all sorts of fees they needed to pay to their respective schools. I had wanted to settle all matters regarding the children's back-to-school expenses before school reopened, but many of them didn't get their list before the last school holidays. So I could only settle the purchase of uniforms, shoes, etc but had to delay disbursing the amount needed by them to pay to the respective schools.

If only there is a standardise rate for every school, it would be much easier for me to calculate and disburse the sponsorship money to the various families. But no, from what I've seen so far, the fees/workbooks vary from as little as RM24 to as high as over RM220 per child. Some schools charge very minimal amount, while some schools charge all sorts of fees to their students.

Since yesterday, one by one I started getting text messages from my clients whose children are under our sponsorship programme, or at least covered by our Children Education Fund for their back-to-school expenses only.

Fuzi's children seemed to be charged a minimal amount (about RM24). I think probably because their teachers took into consideration the fact that Fuzi is a non-working single mother. They have probably been waived from paying certain categories of fees.

Aini's children, schooling in Ipoh, seem to have to pay the most, with the one in primary school having to pay the highest ie RM225. I guess that's because the boy will be sitting for his UPSR this year. Aini's eldest daughter initially had to pay about RM190, but yesterday Aini informed me that her daughter, this year in form five, got a place at the school hostel and so she needed to pay an additional RM360 for hostel fee. That should be easily covered by the sponsorship amount… otherwise last year her bus fares were RM60 per month. Now that she's staying at the hostel, we no longer need to cover for her bus fares.

Maya had earlier on gave me a round figure of RM360 for all her children. Lebihkurang, she said. At that time she hadn't got the list from the schools yet. I told her I wanted details for each child, and not a round total figure for all 4 of them. So today her SMS came, with fees for each child varying from RM54 to RM120. The total definitely more than RM360.

Nuri, Wani, Shila and Hana had also texted me the amount needed for their children's fees. I also received a text message Asiah, saying that she'd be in Ipoh for her hospital appointment tomorrow and so she wanted to pass me all the receipts for her children – not just for the fees, but also for their uniforms etc. So yep, off to the hospital again tomorrow to meet her.

Just yesterday, I prepared a cheque of RM2,267 for the children's schooling needs under our sponsorship programme. Within just a day, I have to prepare another cheque of RM2,962. And another one close to RM3,000 is to be claimed under the Children Education Fund.

On average, each of these single mothers with 3 or 4 children have to come up with over RM400 per family for their children's fees/workbooks. Add to that the amount paid for their uniforms, shoes etc bought earlier, how on earth are they going to pay without any financial assistance?

Chances are, without assistance, they'd end up postponing and postponing their payment… then the class teachers (the insensitive ones lah, there are teachers who are understanding enough) would ask the children for the fees right in front of the other students in class… then the children becomes reluctant to go to school… then they'd be branded as students with disciplinary problems. I've seen quite a few of such cases.

Which reminds me, I called another client yesterday. This case was referred direct to me by the nurse at the ID clinic. She texted me the client's details last week, saying that the children needed help. So I called, and found out that the younger child, now 13, has stopped schooling. When asked why, I was told that they hadn't paid last year's school fees. Hmmm… didn't pay last year's fees and therefore can't go to school this year? Or didn't pay last year's fees and therefore ashamed to go to school this year? Well, I don't know the details yet. That will have to wait until my assessment visit next week…

Change management

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 05:39 AM PST

Source:Change management. From Wikipedia

Change management is a structured approach to shifting/transitioning individuals, teams, and organizations from a current state to a desired future state. It is an organizational process aimed at empowering employees to accept and embrace changes in their current business environment.. In project management, change management refers to a project management process where changes to a project are formally introduced and approved.

Examples of Organizational Change

  1. Missionary changes
  2. Strategic changes
  3. Operational changes (including Structural changes)
  4. Technological changes
  5. Changing the attitudes and behaviors of personnel

As a multidisciplinary practice that has evolved as a result of scholarly research, Organizational Change Management should begin with a systematic diagnosis of the current situation in order to determine both the need for change and the capability to change. The objectives, content, and process of change should all be specified as part of a Change Management plan.

Change Management processes may include creative marketing to enable communication between change audiences, but also deep social understanding about leadership's styles and group dynamics. As a visible track on transformation projects, Organizational Change Management aligns groups' expectations, communicates, integrates teams and manages people training. It makes use of performance metrics, such as financial results, operational efficiency, leadership commitment, communication effectiveness, and the perceived need for change to design appropriate strategies, in order to avoid change failures or solve troubled change projects.

Successful change management is more likely to occur if the following are included:

  1. Effective Communications that informs various stakeholders of the reasons for the change (why?), the benefits of successful implementation (what is in it for us, and you) as well as the details of the change (when? where? who is involved? how much will it cost? etc).

  2. Devise an effective education, training and/or skills upgrading scheme for the organization.
  3. Counter resistance from the employees of companies and align them to overall strategic direction of the organization.
  4. Provide personal counseling (if required) to alleviate any change related fears.
  5. Monitoring of the implementation and fine-tuning as required.
