HOW MUCH IS HE WORTH?!

HOW MUCH IS HE WORTH?!

HOW MUCH IS HE WORTH?!

'Abused' - Abu Bekir's first wife is suing for a RM 400 million divorce!

Corrupt Barisan Nasional - It must have seemed a good idea at the time for young Abu Bekir to have married a lady with an MBA in Finance.  They even placed her on the Board of the family firm CMS.  However, it means Datin Sri Shahnaz Majid, who is now suing him for divorce, is particularly qualified to give an estimate of the worth of Taib's son – and she is after him for RM400 million!
According to expert divorce lawyers consulted by Sarawak Report, a wife in her position would be entitled to aim for 30% of a couple's wealth, which makes Abu Bekir, aged 48, a comfortable billionaire.  According to Kuching lawyer Desmond Kho:
"The RM400 million claim is by far the highest ever recorded and claimed by a Sarawakian.  This should make Bekir one of the richest men in Malaysia.  I'm sure the wife's lawyer must have assessed Bekir's wealth to come up with the quotation".

The revelation could not have come at a more awkward time for the Mahmud family, just the day after Taib had parachuted him in to contest BN's supposedly safe seat of Sadong Jaya. Over the coming days before the actual election the constituents were supposed to be treated to a staged introduction to their new candidate, who would doubtless have become Taib's planned successor.  Even the Prime Minister Najib Razak was to visit the area on his behalf this March 19th.  However, now these voters will have rather more information than anticipated upon which to judge their new candidate!
Bad character?
Wife number 2 is a Russian widow
Shanaz, who is the sister of the well-known jazz singer Sheila Majid and seems widely liked, says that Abu Bekir subjected her to 'physical and mental torture'.  According to reports she has accused her husband of punching her head, face and eyes; kicking her in the ribs; and throttling her.  She also claims he verbally abused her with foul words.  The accusations are uncannily similar to the reports against Abu Bekir's brother Sulaiman, who publicly attacked a girlfriend in a bar in KL.
The couple, who married in 1992 and have a 17 year old son, have not been intimate since 2001.  Shanaz claims that since 1999, her husband rarely came home and could not be advised, was difficult to contact and was very sociable with other women.  After he married a second wife, a young, blond Russian woman he ceased to treat her fairly.
Assets
However, it is Abu Bekir's assets and the small matter of how he came to acquire them that will be of equal interest to Sarawakians contemplating the suitability of this candidate for office.  Shahnaz refers to several homes and claims Bekir owns thousands of hectares in Sarawak, which will come as little surprise to readers of Sarawak Report.  She also reveals that he owns seven luxury cars that include Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bentley and Maserati.  According to Abu Bekirs first wife, their joint assets include shares in 15 different companies including Cahaya Mata Sarawak and Sarawak Cable Bhd as well as savings in Employees Provident Fund and Amanah Saham Bumiputera units.
Abu Bekir (left) Posing as the jet-setter in a magazine article about personal jets.
Sarawak Report has examined just some of the assets his wife refers to.
CMS
It is a well-known fact that Abu Bekir is a key Director and the largest shareholder in CMS along with his brother Sulaiman.  CMS is a supposedly public company made up of assets taken from the State of Sarawak through the decisions of the Chief Minister.  However a huge chunk of the shares are owned by members of Taib's family.
CMS - a Taib Mahmud family company
The latest available Annual Report is for 2009 and it still registers the Chief Ministers's own late wife Laila as the biggest individual shareholder (although it is believed her two sons have now inherited the shares between them).  How Mrs Taib, who never appeared to be engaged in business and who did not bring any money to the marriage, managed to accumulate such a vast shareholding has never been explained to the public or to the ordinary shareholders of CMS!
Father and son celebrate SCORE - the contracts they will be able to award their companies from the state through this will make them even richer still!
Abu Bekir and his brother Sulaiman are the next biggest shareholders and all four children of Taib control Majaharta, which is listed as the largest shareholder!   Each share is currently worth comfortably over 3 ringgit, which a lady with an MBA in finance can easily tot up to a rough calculation of RM 150 million.
The Chief Minister channels numerous public contracts through CMS, thus ensuring that those shares remain a healthy price.  Just one of the lucrative and high-profile contracts the Chief Minister has awarded his family in this way was the recently completed Borneo Convention Centre, at which BN held its political rally last weekend.  Taib's policies of 'Progress and Development' directly benefit CMS in this way.  The more mega-projects he commissions the better his family does, with SCORE being the latest cash cow development programme!
As the Malaysian Stock Exchange, Bursa Malaysia's, news excitedly put it last month:
"Stoked by news flow on potential project flows in SCORE and the award of a road project, CMS's share price surged 80% last year, outperforming the construction stocks under our coverage which rose 36% on average.  This year marks the implementation of Phase 2 of SCORE.  Various road and infrastructure projects under the 10MP and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) have yet to be implemented. Execution will be a key theme for this year, backed by the 10MP's RM4.6 billion budget for Sarawak". Feb 16th 2011
Some of the land companies controlled by Titanium Management, which has also received enormous state contracts thanks to Daddy, Taib Mahmud.
The Taibs could never be accused of putting all their eggs in one basket!  Abu Bekir's company Titanium Management has been awarded enormous tracts of land by the State of Sarawak in recent years, all for a mysterious 'Payment in Kind'!  A host of subsidiary companies, also controlled out of the offices of Titanium, have also been awarded vast areas as well, for no discernable payment.
Sarawak Report has calculated that over 70,000 hectares, an area greater than the size of Singapore, has been handed to Abut Bekir thanks to decisions by his father as the Minister in charge of resources.
As a spate of angry law suits has made plain, many of these territories actually belonged to other people!  The Chief Minister has attempted to over-ride Native Customary Land Rights in recent amendments to the legislation, however these amendments are being over-ruled in the courts.  Just last week Abu Bekir's company Polar Horizon, which had served eviction notices on several Iban native customary landowners, was forced into retreat after PKR's See Chee Howe took them to court and the case was publicised on Radio Free Sarawak and elsewhere.   Abu Bekir's henchmen have verbally assured the villagers that the eviction attempt will no longer go ahead, although nothing yet has been received in writing.
Indeed, given the growing number of setbacks regarding these land disputes, perhaps Datin Shanaz will have to consider revising down some of her calculations on the worth of the land titles which she has demanded that her husband present in court!
Foreign Properties
Commercial Skyscraper – Ottawa's 'Xerox Tower' Complex. Sun Life and Adobe are some of the companies to rent space in this prestige property in Ottawa
Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib was also of course one of the original Directors and a founder of Sakto Corporation, which now owns millions of US dollars worth of property in Canada.
He managed to set up the company with his sister Jamilah and Uncle Onn Mahmud, when he just a college student aged 20!  In its first year the company invested $7 million in purchasing 400 residential units in Ottawa.  The company now owns hundreds of millions of dollars worth of office and retail space, as well as some swish residential blocks. Later, he was one of the founding Directors and Shareholders of the sister company Sakti International set up in the US in 1987.  Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib acted as the President of the company until it was later handed  over to his younger brother Sulaiman Taib, who was studying at university in San Francisco.  The property in Sakti and its related companies are worth in the region of a million dollars as well.
As, Sarawak Report has been able to reveal,  a secret share deal means that half the shares Abu Bekir owns in Sakti are actually held in trust for his father Abdul Taib Mahmud!  Abu Bekir has been laughably presented as a major businessman and maker of money since the tender age of 20, on the basis that his father could never have legitimately have earned such wealth to have given to him.  However, Taib has never offered an explanation as to why these shares were held in trust for him by his children and brothers, giving him an over all 50% interest in the company!
Sarawak Cable
A businessman or a business heir hoping to become a political heir?
This company, which was incorporated in the 1990s, lay dormant until 2008 when it suddenly sprang into life with the acquisition of Universal Cable (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, which manufactures cables.  Abu Bekir Taib is the Chairman and owns 36% of the shares, while his Dad's cousin, Hamid Sepawi, owns 20%. The latest share price, from when these shares were last traded in November, shows them valued at RM1.29.  We therefore calculate that Abu Bekir's 43 million or so shares are worth around RM55 million.
Things should continue to go well for the company as the state has just invested heavily in a project with them!  In November 2010 they were awarded a transmission line job worth RM98.68 million by Sarawak Energy Bhd as part of a joint venture with Sinohydro!
Abu Bekir will at least have no trouble convincing his voters that he is rich and powerful, which is the normal approach of BN politicians wishing to secure support.  He may even follow in his father's footsteps by offering to pay constituents a few hundred ringgit each for their votes.  But those voters should think hard about where Abu Bekir got his money and whether it was from land and state properties that rightfully belonged to them in the first place.  If so, they should consider whether they should actually be voting to get those assets back to the people where they belong!

Brainless twits

How utterly insensitive can Berita Harian be? Poking fun at other people's misery? Despite their apology, the damage has already been done.

Berita Harian shows its true colours with this brainless cartoon in the wake of the tragedy in Japan. Maybe the newspaper thinks that they are very clever but it just demonstrates the shallowness and mentality of the people behind the organisation.

UMNO proudly claims that Berita Harian is their organ, their newspaper. Well, I suppose then that this cartoon also reflects their view. It's not only the newspaper that should apologise; the party behind the newspaper should also do so too. I'm disgusted.

Release the Bibles and avoid it turning into an "emotive and polemic" issue!

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — Bishop Ng Moon Hing, who heads the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM), has denounced as lies a reported home ministry denial that it seized and locked up at Port Klang 5,000 Malay bibles shipped in three years ago from Indonesia. The imported bibles have become a source of controversy because they contain the word "Allah", which the majority Malay-Muslim community here believes cannot be used by non-Muslims to refer to their deities.
On Wednesay, national news agency Bernama reported the ministry's clarification that the bibles actually had been refused entry into Malaysia for not fulfilling the ministry's requirements.
Citing the ministry statement, Bernama said a letter of refusal dated June 26, 2010 had been sent to the importer; however, the importer had yet to claim the cargo.
When contacted by The Malaysian Insider, Ng demanded to know who had made the statement.
"Who said it?" he questioned.
When told it was a statement reported by Bernama, and no name had been mentioned, Ng said: "Well, they're lying."
The ministry was responding to the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship's (NECF) claim that the ministry had conducted the seizure.
NECF secretary-general Sam Ang, writing in its bulletin, claimed the ministry had confiscated and detained the bibles in Port Klang since the year before last, and continued to hold them although the Cabinet had approved the release of the consignment.
The bishop said the CFM, the umbrella body representing over 90 per cent of all churches in the country — covering the Catholic, Protestant and evangelical segments — has documents to back their claim and called the ministry's bluff on the issue.

Today, The Star Online reported:

Bibles issue being resolved amicably, says Hishammuddin

PETALING JAYA: The issue of the impounding of 30,000 Bibles at Port Klang and Kuching Port is being resolved amicably with the parties concerned, based on advice from the Attorney-General.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the situation was not due to the books or the material but the pending appeal by the Catholic Herald over the use of the word "Allah" in its publication.
"The appeal has yet to be heard by the court to resolve the bigger issue of content one way or the other.
"In respect of the bibles from Port Klang and Kuching Port, the ministry have since sought and obtained the advice of the Attorney-General and the two matters are being resolved amicably with the parties concerned, based on this advice, in the next few days.
"I urge all parties not to listen to wild allegations and speculations. As always, the ministry will act based on the law," he said in a statement here on Sunday.

Here I have some facts and questions:
1. The Umno-led BN government started this whole fuss about the use of the word 'Allah' in the publication of  Catholic Herald - hence does it not have the power to stop it as well?
2. In 2009, the High Court had ruled that the Catholic Church had the constitutional right to use the word "Allah". However, the ministry filed an appeal against the High Court decision in February 2010 and won a stay, until the case is dealt with by the Court of Appeal. Does not the filing of appeal against the decision of the High Court speak of the insincerity of the home ministry as well as its intention to 'win the case at all cost'?
3. The ongoing court case is Government versus Catholic Church and its publication. How can the pending appeal affect the decision to impound the Bibles or 'Alkitab'?

'Bunyi Letupan Itu Seperti Neraka Di Atas Bumi'

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 09:41 AM PDT

Terpaan media semakin membuat warga ketakutan.

Kerana panik dan kurangnya maklumat, masyarakan awam lantas mengaitkan insiden ledakan Fukushima dengan bencana nuklear terburuk sepanjang sejarah dunia, Chernobyl.

Petaka nuklear Chernobyl 1986 maupun Three Mile Island 1979 menjadi bahan perbualan menyusul letupan reaktor nuklir Fukushima.

-okezone

IMBAS KEMBALI

Chernobyl, 1986 - letupan loji nuklear ke-4

BERITAN HARIAN's Insensitivity is a Disgrace to the Malay Community and to Malaysians in General

BERITA HARIAN pokes fun at recent tsunami disasters in JAPAN

Photobucket

CNN iReport :

Local Malaysian newspaper Berita Harian published a caricature in their editor's column today that depicts the popular Japanese cartoon character Ultraman as trying to outrun an incoming tsunami.

The publication has received tremendous criticisms by readers, who accuse the editors as being "inconsiderate and distasteful".

What Malaysians Are Saying....

Read here and here and HERE
  • I am embarrased to be a Malaysian but I can't change that fact. However, I am fortunate to be livimg out of Malaysia given all the distasteful & disrespectful events caused by Malaysian leaders. Now to top things, Berita Harian, a local Malaysian newspaper have proven themselves to be OWNED BY IDIOTS AND RUN BY IDIOTS!

  • I am so disgusted with Malaysia...sad to admit I am from Malaysia...

  • I think this is the most insensitive and distateful thing that can come out of any human being. There is a time and a place for everything and clearly, this isn't one of them.

  • Publish news about japan disaster and yet at the same time mock them with cartoon .. Sorry to say, even I'm Malaysian very ashamed about this.

  • That's the problem with Malaysian, they are so coveted by their government that when this kind of things happen they react too fast without thinking. Here they don't get the whole point. This cartoon is not offensive, it's just not funny. Get over it. A cartoonist like Lat has covered more sensitive subjects and yet has never been criticized, the reason being that he has done it intelligently.

  • I am a Malaysian and I must admit it is a national disgrace having such newspaper poking fun of others misery. There is a classic case of "Schadenfreude" German word for cashing pleasure from the misfortunes of others.

  • I am Malaysian. And i'm ashamed of this as BH is one of the main medium reaching the audiences and the citizen of Malaysia. I would like to apologize for this. A lot of petition has been started online requesting BH to apologize. We, most of Malaysian are aware of the trouble of those affected in Japan. We deeply and are still praying for Japan. Condolences to those affected.

  • BH is supposedly a true 'muslim' news media , fully supported by our UMNOputras. Have a question for the UMNOputras , does Koran teach you poke jokes at suffering people ? ? ? Why have numerous places of worship, instead of decent schools , IF you are able to be DECENT , in the face of such devasting disaster ! ! ! BH should be banned , to prove that we , the Malaysians are really sorry for such a SICK JOKE .

  • This BH is Umno organ and they will be satisfied after making fun of others the like of: "Sodomy adalah perbuatan memasukkan zakar kedalam dubur" so much so my primary school going daughter once asked me, "Papa what is zakar, what is dubur." I just cannot answer but deep inside me I said," Umno Pukima*."

  • The whole Berita Harian editorial bunch should be dragged on the street like the cowhead incident. Apologize is not enough. They should weep for forgiveness to the Japanese people.

  • Taking stupidity in Bodohland to higher levels. That's all they are capable of. When we had the highland towers tragedy, the Japanese, the French acted swiftly, flew in with their rescue personnel & equipment to help us, and this is how we thank them. Screw u next time. When we had terrible floods in johor, while the Sleeping Beauty was cutting ribbon for "restoran" in perth, singaporeans came in and help us malaysians. Ungrateful, this is ketuanan behavior, izzit?

  • Dumb people do dumb things in the most inappropriate time and place. This berita harian ought to b esuspended for embarrassing Malaysia. berita harian = umnoputra = stewpigs! Buat lawak pun tak reti tempat dan masa. Bila umnoputra tersindir sikit jee dah nak meradang ugut bakar lee, ugut hantar balik cine lee, ugut nak tarik balik kerakyatan lee tapi bila sendiri buat bodoh tak de hal laa plak!

  • Sick mentality. The whole Editorial and Management Board should resign and their press printing permit cancelled. This is the so-called 'dominant' race inculcated from the days of Tun Mahathir. Congrats to Malaysia. You have proven to be the most extremely insensitive and offensive Nation in the international community. Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali must surely be truly proud of what they had done.

  • Berita Harian another UMNOputra dirty rag, not worth the paper it is printed on.Their contempt for decency is demonstrated by this distasteful cartoon, nonetheless this daily has shamed me and everyone in my household. In 2009, Berita Harian fell from a circulation of 203,704 in 2006 to 154,868 – a fall of 24 per cent. Little wonder many will not wrap even fish purchases with this rag. It poisons the fish.

  • utusan is so used to making fun, humiliating and threatening people of other races and this time i think, will incur international backlash from japanese investors and citizens. This is not the first time UMNO papers did this. At one time NST humiliated the thais when Kadir Jasin was editor in its daily cartoon.

  • This goes to show how immature, idiotic and distasteful these morons are. People are mourning for the losses of lives and yet they are making fun out of it! Bustards!

  • Tasteless .. another UMNO's paper. This is really insulting even though the paper has apologised. This shows that insulting Chinese is OK, insulting Japanese is also OK. Anyway, I have sent a copy of the cartoon to the Japanese Telecommunication Ministry ex-adviser who closed to me. Good luck to you all #%@#$ UMNO. Let see how no cultural senseless and inhumane this newspaper was.

  • Apology not accepted.Berita Harian has given Malaysia a bad name internationally. It should be shut down, and its editors and entire management should be forced to resign, just like what happened to the Sarawak Tribune in 2006, when they reprinted the Jyllands-Posten cartoons. No double standards should be practiced here.

  • The damage was done. ... That's the essence of their mindset and mentality since Tun Mahathir. They now even think the whole world belongs to them. Berita Harian must be condemned in the strongest sense for their lack of maturity and insensitivity. The whole Editorial and Management Board must resign en bloc for this extreme folly. Is this what their religion taught them? We are talking about thousands of lives feared to have died in the tsunami.

Orang Boleh Jatuh Sekelip Mata...

ZOY adalah ilustrator dan pengkartun yang popular. Sewaktu Tukang Catat di bangku sekolah dahulu, beliau melukis siri ilustrasi Pendekar Si Jangkang. Kemudian diikuti dengan beberapa lagi siri seperti Seladang Tunggal, Si Takluk Jagat dan lain-lain. Kebanyakan lukisannya berkisar tentang dunia kepahlawanan Melayu.

Bersabar lah Zoy!

Airmata Kesedihan Untuk Rakyat Jepun

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 04:44 AM PDT

Sesungguhnya kita bertuah badan,
Tidak disentuh tsunami yang melanda Northern Japan.
Bergegar jantung kita, berderai airmata,
Melihat bencana mengganas tak terkata.

Negara Jepun memang selalu bersedia menghadapi gempabumi,
Yang mereka tak sangka, betapa teruknya bila adanya tsunami.
Segalanya diseret dan dihanyutkan macam barang permainan,
Kita menangis meraung melihat segala2nya dimusnahkan.

Pilunya hati walaupun kita semua jauh disini,

Janganlah kita lupakan Dia,
Doa kuat2, mintak ampunlah sentiasa..InsyaAllah selamatlah kita.

p.s. Maaf, baru belajar berpantun..

Bot Pelancong Ke Pulau Perhentian Terbakar

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:45 AM PDT

-- BERNAMA

CNN iReport —

Local Malaysian newspaper Berita Harian published a caricature in their editor's column today that depicts the popular Japanese cartoon character Ultraman as trying to outrun an incoming tsunami.

Diantara komen yang ada ialah:

They poke a joke at this just because it's not happening at their own home. What does that tell you about BH's level of sensitivity?

Well done to the EDITOR IN-CHIEF !!! GR8 JOB ON HUMILIATING THE WHOLE MALAYSIAN. Now I am ashamed to be Malaysian.

This is outrageous! A total insult to Japan. Before insulting someone else, have you ever take a look at yourself? People are far more advance than you!

RAZIAH’S LAND GRAB IN TAIB’S OWN CONSTITUENCY

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:04 AM PDT

Corrupt Barisan Nasional - With breath-taking arrogance Taib has handed a huge area of land to a company controlled by his sister in his own constituency!
Saradu Plantations was given 8,000 hectares in Balingian over the period 2004 – 2009.  Most of the land was grabbed from a precious remaining forest reserve, Setuan Besar Forest Reserve, in the area near Bintulu.  The rest of the land was taken from local communities in violation of their Native Customary Rights!
Managing the deal, according to the Land Registry, was none other than Taib's own sister Raziah Mahmud /Geneid.  She was controlling the matter from the offices of the company in which both she and Taib himself hold shares, Kumpulan Parabena Sdn Bhd.

The tell-tale telephone number listed in the registry is the same number that has been used to handle dealings with a string of other related companies, which have taken lands totalling a greater area than the whole of Singapore in just the past few years.  It it the number of the Kumpulan Parabena office in Jalan Sungai, Kuching.  The number is Kuching 082-423 877.
Raziah in charge - and working from the offices of Kumpulan Parabena!
Communities kicked out as usual
Bejewelled - Raziah (centre) with Taib's daughter Jamilah and sister Zaleha
The recent copy of the register (above) makes plain that officials are still in the process of producing a provisional lease, yet this clearly did not stop Saradu from invading NCR lands in 2007 to cut through their roads into the forest.
4 Iban villages and a number of Melanau communities were affected.  Matek Anak Geram told Sarawak Report that his sago plantation in Kuala Balingian, on which his community based their livelihoods, has been destroyed.  Clearly, this was of no consequence to the high-living millionairess Raziah or her business partners, who were soon to demonstrate that they had the forces of law and order, if not the actual law, on their side.
According to NGOs the Melanau villagers, who belong to the Mahmud's own ethnic community, were discouraged from complaining by outrageous claims on the part of their Pengulu and headmen, all controlled by BN.  The villagers were apparently told that any complaint about Raziah's land snatch would amount to 'going against the government' and therefore be dangerous rebellion.  Worse, they were told that, because Pelitia is a state body, to complain about it would somehow be 'going against Islam'.  Pelita is the Land Custody and Development Agency, chaired by Taib, which handed the land to his sister's company.  Is this the way the 'religious' Taibs seek to exploit their own people?
Forces of law and order?
Police reports made, but ignored.
Matek Anak Geram and fellow villagers complained to the police about trespass, complaining that Saradu was not even prepared to pay for their use of the land.  However, they claim their complaints were ignored.
On the other hand when, after filing a court complaint in 2008, the kampongs mounted a blockade against the plantation-workers they sparked a brutal reaction.  Matek was arrested in an early morning raid by 10 armed police officers and thrown into a cell, charged with the 'offence' of restraining the oil plantation workers.
"She took our land and she purposely made the villagers suffer" says Matek of Raziah Mahmud
Matek, who is 31 and has two children, described to Sarawak Report how the arrival of the oil palm plantation has destroyed the communities' livelihoods in numerous ways, polluting their river, killing their fish and pouring chemicals into the water and land.  He says that with the forest also destroyed they have lost their access to all the jungle products and that very many, very big trees have now been taken.  He has been forced away to the city and works as an NGO campaigner to send back money, meanwhile his relatives who once had their own farms now have to work as 'coolies' for others.
Destruction
Satellite image of Setuan Besar, 5,000 hectares now destroyed by palm oil 'development'.
What was till recently a last remaining area of lowland forest in Sarawak is now wantonly destroyed – as satellite pictures now clearly show.  The local Iban protesters, who have fought for their heritage, say they have suffered attacks by gangsters and frequent police harassment as their case progresses through the courts.  Meanwhile, the 'development' has continued.  The profit to the Taibs is clear to see.  One of Saradu's main shareholders is a company called Organic Treasure, which belongs mainly to Raziah and her husband Robert Geneid.
Raziah's financial interest in Saradu Plantation is clear.
No surprise – Raziah pays lower than the minimum wage!
Meanwhile, Taib's own constituents in the area have, as usual, seen none of the benefits of such 'progress' and felt all of the pain. Matek explains that the plantation refuses to offer even their menial jobs to the local people, preferring to import Indonesian workers.  A pattern repeated across Sarawak.  Matek also reports that the workers on the plantation have been receiving a base rate of RM9 per day, rising to RM15 for senior workers!  This is well below the minimum agreed wage of RM22 a day, set by the Indonesian Consulate.  Shame on the Mahmuds for hiring foreign workers instead of their own constituents and shame on them for not even paying half the minimum agreed wage!
Saradu is a large slice of Sarawak handed to his own sister in his Bintulu backyard.
Are there no limits?
Sarawak Report is left wondering at such arrogance by the Chief Minister towards his own people and his own voting constituents.  Has age dulled his political senses or has the effect of 30 years in power been to leave him believing he can do anything to anyone?
As, everyone knows, the Chief Minister has been losing case after case as Native Land Rights disputes have gone through the courts in recent months.  Yet he fails to take action.  Instead he prefers to contest and appeal against the cases he has lost, forgetting there is also a Court of Popular Opinion that is judging him also and will soon be delivering its verdict!
The Saradu Court Case is due to be heard in Miri in coming months.  Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the 4 Iban villages who are standing up to the Saradu land grab, PKR's State Assemblyman for Kuching, Dominique Ng, has his own analysis of the problem with Taib.
"The Taibs' family greed knows no limit and is beyond shame. They will steal, and steal, and steal again, for as long as they can, until they are sacked or drop dead. They will continue to rape and pillage Sarawak until one of these happen!" he has told Sarawak Report.
Clearly, Taib thinks that such threats as "If you do not help us, we will not help you", made by George Chan, will have the magic effect of bringing his constituents round, along with the current standing offer of RM100 per household delivered by Alfred Jabu.
Yet, in 30 years what has the Chief Minister done for his constituents in Kuala Balingian?  The Chief Minister should remember that his sister has just one vote and that Sarawakians are not stupid.

Shoes - Then and Now!

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:00 AM PDT

When I was an undergraduate, I used to play squash and badminton on alternate days. By the time I graduated, the church I attended then had a squash court so I continued playing my game happily till I gave birth to my older one. I never really played the game again on a regular basis until my younger boy took up the game recently.

When my boy went for his first session, the coach looked at my racquet and told him, "Young man, this is a very good racquet. Unfortunately, it is also very old and the rules of the game have changed quite a bit. This cannot be used any more."

With that, I bought him a new racquet - Wilson - and my young man was pretty happy and enthusiastic about his practices.

My husband and I decided that since my boy and I are roly-poly, we should play squash every Sunday afternoon. Happily, I took out my old pair of squash shoes - brand is Patrick.

I booked the court this afternoon for a 1.5 hr session and we drove there excitedly. Hubby wore his A***as sports shoes while my young man had put on his Power sports shoes. Yours truly wore her faithful Patrick squash shoes which she bought in 1985. No kidding!

I won the first game and lost the second game. Halfway in the third game, my husband came out of the court and pointed to his shoes. The soles were gaping so I asked Nick to get some rubber bands from the counter and hubby used it to fix his shoes.

Then I looked down at my old pair of shoes. They were twenty-six years old and still in pretty good shape except for the scruffy scratches on the leather trims.

The truth is - they don't make shoes like what they used to in the past. I confess I have a shoe and handbag fetish. To my amazement, those shoes I bought in the 1990's are still in good condition - especially those made of leather but I cannot say the same of the shoes I bought in the last three years. The quality of the materials used is just not the same any more.

Before I forget, I have changed the settings of the comment form in this blog as there have been some nasty comments for this post. Initially, I posted all three comments and responded to them but a few friends called up and blasted me for releasing such comments and even bothering to respond to these so kindly.

As you all know, I try my best to look at the positive side of issues and take a centrist view. Even my comment that "No one is perfect - not even the Penang state government." was regarded as a spin by that person. I have deleted the other two comments which were provocative and mischievous in nature and hope that that person (whom I ticked off before regardless of how much he may deny it) will not return.

I hope that you can use your google account to log in before you comment. I seek your kind cooperation and understanding in this matter. I will try to write another post later. In the mean time, my arms are aching and I still feel hungry even after a grilled chicken burger at Burger King.

Take care and have a pleasant evening!

Reaktor Ke-6 Jepun di Loji Fukushima Kehilangan Pendingin

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:00 AM PDT

"Nuclear energy is a reliable, high quality and cost effective supply of energy which is fundamental to attracting new investments as well as encouraging existing industries to expand into high value added activities."

I hope these words by Dr Mohd Zamzam bin Jaafar, CEO of the newly formed Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation, do not come back to haunt him and the Malaysian government.

Every Malaysian citizen must voice out against the very idea of having any nuclear plant or rare earth processing facility in the country!

Japan's double whammy

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

I am humbled. Like most other people from around the world, I have been sitting in front of the television set in the home, unable to tear myself away from the images of the complete devastation in Japan. If the initial earthquake of magnitude 9.0 was terrible enough, the subsequent tsunami was even worse.

The pictures from the tsunami that destroyed Bandar Acheh in 2004 were all still images of the event's aftermath but after this weekend, nobody will ever forget the scenes from all the video footages of the Japan tsunami.

I first got to learn of the earthquake about half an hour after it happened. "Earthquake in Tokyo," a friend had texted me, and "Miyagi town to be hit by a tsunami of 20 feet high."

And sure enough, there it was on television with the first scenes unfolding of seawater rushing into a town centre, sweeping along ships, trucks and motor vehicles, waves crashing and bringing down buildings and then overflowing into the farmlands. Wow, a most impressive sight at first but very soon later, the enormity of the destruction sank in. The debris left behind when the waters receded. And countless persons unaccounted for. How many lives perished, unable to escape the rushing waters?

I doubt Japan is really well-prepared to handle this disaster. No nation can ever hope to be absolutely well-prepared to handle natural disasters. And the rebuilding process: how long will it take the people to pick up the pieces after seeing their entire possessions destroyed within minutes? Ten years? Twenty years? For some, this is already their lifetime. And the psychological trauma that the tsunami is guaranteed to leave on the country.

All this, despite Japan being the third largest economy in the world. All the economic success in the world and yet, everything pales in the wake of nature's force. And how will it impact us? Though we are far removed from the tragedies there, somehow we are still connected and we will be affected.

The stock market, for instance. There was hardly time for the market to digest the true gravity of the situation last Friday but when the market reopens tomorrow after the weekend, I think the nervousness is going to show. The reaction may be bad.

The other concern is, of course, the industries which are linked to Japan: those whose production depends on component parts from Japan or final manufactured goods sent to Japan. Any disruption to the supply chain is likely to ripple through the whole manufacturing industry. The impact can be very serious. It's a wait-and-see right now, but I just hope that the 2008 economic downturn won't be repeated.
