NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin
Islam has a word for Muslims who talk about defending Islam and yet go against Islamic teachings. Datuk Ambiga is in fact upholding Islamic teachings. She is opposed to election fraud. Zul, on the other hand, wants to uphold election fraud.
In this sense Ambiga is more Islamic than Zul. Zul, according to Islamic teachings, is a hypocrite or Munafiq.
For those Muslims and non-Muslims who may not understand the concept of Munafiq in Islam, allow me to deliver my Sunday sermon.
Munāfiq (n., in Arabic: منافق, plural munāfiqūn) is an Islamic Arabic term used to describe a religious hypocrite, who outwardly practices Islam, while inwardly concealing his disbelief (kafir), perhaps even unknowingly.
The term munāfiq in Arabic, Bengali and Urdu is primarily a non-religious term that refers to a person whose actions are different from and opposite to his thoughts, which he conceals. In the Qur'anic sense the term refers to a person who does not have faith, but pretends to.

Just last Friday, I had an interesting conversation with an Iranian.

I asked him, 'I remember you told me that you were not a Muslim.' He said yes.

Then, I asked, 'So, what is your religion?' He answered, 'I've studied other religions and I generally believe in the concept of God but I don't have a religion.'

'I thought most if not all people from the Middle East are Muslims. So, you are not one? Did you convert?' I probed further. He answered "No" to both of my questions.

'Muslims are not allowed to convert, right? So, did you convert in Iran or how did you avoid being found out?'

'That's why I'm here (in Malaysia),' he answered.

'But while you were in Iran, what did you do?' I asked.

'It's easy. Do what everyone else is doing. Just pretend,' he said while giving me a broad smile. Then, he went on to tell me about one popular song about people pretending and wearing masks.

[Bergambar] Ribuan Warga Syria Melarikan Diri Ke Turki

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 09:49 AM PDT

-BBC

Himpunan BERSIH: Manifestasi Suara Rakyat Untuk Pilihanraya Yang Adil Dan Bersih

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 07:54 AM PDT

-tvsnews

Sebuah Catatan Perjalanan Pulang

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 01:44 AM PDT

"Diam! Apa kau tahu!?" Suara ayah keras membentak setelah reaksi spontan saya bila berita mengenai pergolakan di selatan Thai dikhabarkan. Semua diam. Hanya suara wartawan TV3 Azura Zainal Ratin jelas di udara. Saya jadi terketar-ketar, kecut perut.

Ibu menghulur sebuah buku lusuh bertulis jawi. Saya menatap, 'Sejarah Kerajaan Melayu Patani' yang ditulis Ibrahim Syukri. Semalaman, saya membaca habis buku itu. Akhirnya....saya menangis terisak-isak, azan subuh pun kedengaran.

Rasanya masing2 sedang menjalankan beberapa tugasan rumah..sapu sampah, basuh pinggan, kemas tempat tidur, jemur bantal busuk, dsbnya.

Bergoyang rumah mereka bagai nak roboh dibuatnya.

Ibarat, kalau ayam nak bertelur pun tak jadi.

Melompat lagi Abah Buntat!

For heaven's sake, BE FAIR!!!

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 02:41 AM PDT

This morning, a very old and dear friend whom I have known for decades came to visit me. As we sat there reminiscing in my living room. we exchanged notes about our sons and how we are so blessed in many ways. Recently widowed, L, has always been a steadfast and strong character, always giving her very best in charity projects for the poor and needy in Penang.

After talking for about two hours, she asked me if I had read THIS REPORT called The Pearl of the Orient needs a new polish, The Star editorial for today. I had not read it then although I came across it in the online version when I was having my breakfast. Then, she began her rant and opined that I should write about it and I promised to look at it and to blog about it if I feel angry enough.

As a Penangite, I do take umbrage to what I read in that article.

I always believe that we have to be as fair/objective as possible in our writing. In journalism, objectivity is of primary importance and encompasses fairness, factuality, and non-partisanship and a combination of these qualities that can assure readers of the neutral stand of the source/writer.

However, this particular editorial is certainly unfair in that it only highlights the negative aspects of the current Penang state government without highlighting THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS.

What is the motive then of focusing on a few black dots and forgetting about the beauty/achievements of the Penang state government in an editorial that is to be read by the whole nation and international readers who log into the online portal?

Why did they NOT MENTION:

  • The state-wide WiFi initiative
  • The establishment of the Penang Science Council
  • The Senior Citizens' Appreciation Programme where those who registered are given 100rm annually
  • The holding of open tenders for all government contracts
  • Initiatives towards making Penang a green state
  • The increase of the annual allocation for Islamic religious activities from RM12.5mil in 2008 to RM24.3mil in 2010
  • A huge amount of $ saved because the Penang govt now travel by Air Asia instead of other airlines
  • and other achievements...
Why didn't the editorial highlight how the Penang government has emphasized a governance based on competency, accountability and transparency?

Why didn't they mention that the state government has implemented not only an open tender system but also a 2 week objection period to allow a review if there any valid complaints by unhappy competitors?

Why didn't they mention that to further reduce financial temptations, the Penang State government has cut out the middle men by disbursing the money into the accounts and practicing electronic tender so that the days of needing political cables to secure government contracts are long past and replaced by computer cables?

Why did they just go on TO PROJECT A NEGATIVE IMAGE OF PENANG WITHOUT EXPLAINING HOW in their effort to protect and encourage whistle blowers, the Penang State government has introduced an Integrity Award of RM 10,000? The first recipient was a Penang Syariah High Court judge, Mohd Yusof who was also awarded a Datoship for exposing a cheating scam of more than RM 500,000.

Why did The Star fail to include statements of how the Penang state government has reaped the some benefits from our reforms by having a surplus budgets for 2008 and 2009 despite projected deficits of RM 35 million and RM 39 million respectively? It is common knowledge that for 2008, the Penang state government achieved a turnaround of RM 123 million or 26% of the 2008 budget by recording a surplus of RM 88 million instead of a deficit of RM 35 million.

If Transparency International Malaysia, which has commended the success of Penang CAT governance can recognize the Penang State government, why can't The Star do that?

If the 2008 Auditor-General Report Department of Audit has complimented Penang's prudent financial management and people-centric governance, why hasn't The Star mentioned that?

The Penang Finance Department and Penang Development Corporation were two of the 8 state agencies in Malaysia that received the highest 4 star rating. Was this mentioned in the editorial today?

Nope.

Did The Star focus on the 30 People Centric Policies of the Penang State government?

Nope.

I am a very fair person. I am NOT saying that the Penang State government is perfect. IT IS NOT PERFECT and still has its flaws which have been deliberately highlighted by the editorial.

The Star said that "Penang had become a favoured location for factories and assembly plants, several of these closed as investors relocated abroad. There is still no back-up plan." Well, did they bother to find the statistics of how much investment has been brought in? They should have and then they should have looked at the total picture, interviewed the CM, done their homework and then make an educated and well-researched editorial to give CONSTRUCTIVE and OBJECTIVE report based on FACTS and not OPINIONS.

According to THAT REPORT (my comments in italics):

The beaches have seen occasional clean-up campaigns, but the real problem is inadequate management that spans aesthetic as well as health and safety issues.

How is the management inadequate? What are the aesthetic, health and safety issues? State these CLEARLY instead of GENERALIZING or worse still, overgeneralizing!!!

State authorities must shoulder their responsibilities with proactive action rather than delayed reaction.

When has there been DELAYED REACTION? Cite specific references and the time span of the delay!!! Substantiate with evidence attributed to credible sources - this is a BASIC PRINCIPLE of reporting!!!

Passing the buck cannot be an option.

To whom did the Penang State government pass the buck? I also want to know. CLARIFY!!!

Penang Hill, a standard tourism draw, still deserves better management. The recent problems with the hill's new funicular train service could easily have been prevented.

How could this have been prevented? Did the editorial give specific suggestions? Personally, I am not happy about the way Penang Hill/Penang is being developed or not developed and I have blogged about it HERE and HERE.

The issue of stray dogs causing a costly malfunction and service disruption should not rest there, since the question is why strays had been allowed to congregate and breed in the prime tourist attraction in the first place.

Has The Star acknowledged that this has been a problem from eons?

Visitors have also been upset by a doubling of train ticket prices and long queues, with no apparent improvements in hill attractions.

I agree with the statement with regards to the lack of improvements in hill attractions but if the state government has spent a lot on the new trains, surely it is only logical that the ticket prices should increase.

The Federal Government's provision of new trains has met with a distinct lack of business acumen at state level.

I have already highlighted the financial achievements of the Penang State government earlier so why was it left out in the editorial? Surely they have all the data at their disposal. Selectivity for a purpose?

Another question is what significant investment, if any, state authorities can actually deliver.

Again, did they do their homework?

Better economic management would mean more jobs, better incomes and a higher standard of living for the people.

Although investments have dipped everywhere, Penang's plunge of 79% in 2009 is terrible compared with the 48% national average.

With an international airport of its own and a population twice Malacca's, state leaders should be doing better than argue over whether Penang outdid Malacca in attracting tourists.

After more than three years, the state government has achieved little more than blame the previous administration for its shortcomings while claiming credit for securing the investments the latter had solicited earlier.

I agree that LGE should stop lambasting the previous state government! They should concentrate on developing Penang rather on petty issues rather than by putting down the previous government. That is very petty and does nothing for their image!

The fact that Penang has lost some of its strengths should be more reason to redouble efforts at regaining them.

I believe the state government is really TRYING to do that and they are not God to work out instant miracles but for heaven's sake, BE FAIR!!!  Don't give a one sided report that does not mention the achievements of the state government.

Since the Pearl has lost some lustre, the onus is on the authorities to work much harder to restore its shine.

Well, The Star editorial has FAILED TO MENTION how the Penang state government has implemented free tourist bus rides. A friend of mine who visited Penang recently, went round Penang easily on the free bus rides and was amazed at how much the state government has done. His only complaint was the lack of information at bus stops and the frequency of those free bus rides.

Please lah, just BE FAIR. The Penang State government is NOT perfect. I can rant about their imperfections (a cursory glance at the press releases in LGE's web page will give you an idea of what I mean) BUT I know they do mean well and are trying their best to put the rakyat first in many areas.

Objectivity and neutrality must be present in reporting.Bias slants or one-sided reporting MUST NOT be present. All I am asking for is for them TO BE FAIR. Is that too much to ask for???

Gerhana Bulan Paling Gelap Khamis Ini

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 03:55 AM PDT

-BH

Preparations under way…

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 01:41 AM PDT

3 weeks to go to our Family Day. Meetings are held every week now to ensure the smooth running of the whole thing. Venue has been confirmed. Now we're waiting for the confirmation of the number of people attending before discussing on the logistics.

We've given everybody until Monday, 13th June to confirm attendance. My part time staff has been busy calling all volunteers, not only to confirm their own attendance, but also the attendance of their clients as well.

As of today, on my side, I already have confirmation of 50 attendees from my clients and their family members – including 19 children aged 12 and below. The other volunteers combined managed to get 10 of their clients/families to attend. Which means now we have 60 attendees not inclusive of volunteers. In my earlier confirmation with the management of our family day venue, I told them we may have about 70 attending. For the moment the figures look just about right… inclusive of volunteers. But there may be a few more additions by tomorrow.

On my side, the first few to confirm attendance were the regulars – Fuzi +5, Mrs K +5 & Aini +3. They've been joining our family day outing since 2007. Sofie and her children started attending last year, and looks like they too are going to be regulars. The year before, she was just referred to us, and since she was at that time too weak to even get up, she didn't attend. Her children weren't too familiar with me yet, and so none of them joined. However, now that the children would follow me around even without their mother coming along, I believe the children would still join with or without their mother. So with Sofie +4 that's already 21 in numbers.

As for Lin, she had confirmed attendance, but needed time to confirm the numbers. You see, her 2 older girls who are already working could not confirm earlier if they can make it on that day. Lin had already mentioned that her 2 boys may not join. Lin plus 3 duaghters = 4. That's a total of 25.

Yah did join our family day in 2007, but after that she went "angau" and her family went a bit haywire, she missed the event from 2008 to 2010. Well, now she has started working and her children are back with her, she will reappear at this year's family day. Yah + 4 children. Total now 30.

Another client who just joined last year, Rin, again confirmed her attendance for this year, together with her 2 children. Total 33.

The rest from my list will be newcomers to our family day. There's Halimah whose youngest son is now already 1 year +. Halimah will be coming with her husband and another child. That's an additional 3… total 36.

From the north, since we are arranging for a bus from Taiping, this time we have quite a few coming. Aza +2, Jay +3, and a new client whom I have yet to meet, Elli + 3. And this morning I managed to talk to a client I met last year at Taiping Hospital, Ita, and immediately she agreed to join with her youngest child. Her other 3 children are staying in boarding schools. That makes an additional 13, total now 49.

And add to that the latest client referred to me just last Wednesday, Fadil, I now have a total of 50.

I am still waiting for replies from Rozi who had earlier indicated her interest to join but could not confirm just yet. I believe I may be able to get 4 or 5 more of my clients to come. Tomorrow I am going to make another round of calls to those who have yet to confirm.

And based on last year's attendees, I do hope the other volunteers can get a few more clients to come as well.

The Pirate Bay: Corrupt governments will not be tolerated. Idiots at MCMC!!

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 01:32 AM PDT

Top file-sharing website The Pirate Bay (TPB), which touts itself as "the world's most resilient bittorrent site", has expressed its displeasure over the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) Internet blockade that ordered Internet Service Providers (ISP) in a directive to last month to block access to 10 sites deemed guilty of copyright infringements, including TPB.

private bay story In a missive to Malaysiakini, site representative Winston Bay said, "We are upset that Malaysia is again transgressing the people's human rights."

Bay cited the recent United Nations declaration of the Internet as a fundamental human right, lamenting that at the same time, Malaysia is blocking access to it. He also argued that TPB is the "biggest culture exchange in the history of humankind" and will not be stopped by neither a "corrupt government" nor its "stupidity".

Bay said, "People will of course be able to use TPB anyhow, just as in every other country where we have been blocked, the traffic in the end increases. It shows that corrupt governments will not be tolerated, and that the Internet manages to circumvent stupidity."

In his tongue-in-cheek reply to Malaysiakini's query, he also said that they are "very, very upset" that the MCMC has listed the site as number two in the directive to ISPs and they were thinking of filing charges against the Malaysian government for not understanding that they were number one - hence damaging their reputation.

Bay quipped in the missive, saying, "If you talk to the idiots over there, ask them if they really didn't know how big we are. We can't be number two! We're not Bono."

Ketika rakyat susah jom tengok beg tangan Rosmah

Kisah BEG TANGAN Rosmah Bernilah RM1 juta

Khamis lalu, akhbar melaporkan kes sama pergaduhan melibatkan warga asing berlaku gara-gara mengurat wanita. -SH

Shitty MAXIS service, shitty Nokia phone too

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 11:57 PM PDT

My Nokia C6, which was purchased in September last year, was working fine until last Friday evening when it suddenly developed a serious technical problem. No amount of switching it off and on repeatedly, or removing the battery, could restore it back to working condition. It looked dead to me.

On Saturday, I phoned the MAXIS customer careline at 123, told them that my phone was on the blink and asked them for their recommendation. They suggested taking it to any of their MAXIS centres and said that their centre at the Northam Suite Hotel in Northam Road, Penang was still open until 1.30pm. Just bring your warranty card along, chirped the chap at the other end of the line.

Great, I thought to myself. I was just about to go out to the island anyway. Had an appointment at one o'clock and if I were to go out earlier I could kill two birds with one stone. So in high spirits, I made myself to the MAXIS centre only to be told, with nary a look at my poor phone, that I had to go to the Nokia service centre to get it repaired.

Needless to say, I was cheesed off and I made it known to them that they could have saved me a lot of bother if their staff manning their 123 careline had been trained better to give me the right information and not make me run around without a solution to my problem. That is the prerogative of the lousy civil service, not to be emulated or admired by the private sector corporations.

Today's Sunday. I have still to wait until tomorrow. So right now, I'm reduced to using my wife's old Samsung clam shell mobile phone temporarily. There are no bells or whistles on this phone; it's just a basic unit for making telephone calls and text messages. The worst part is that all my friends' telephone phones are now completely inaccessible. And how I miss the ability to check my emails on the spoilt Nokia C6.

Talking of Nokia, no matter how fast or how slow their service centre is going to repair my phone, or even if it can be repaired at all, I think this will be the last Nokia model that I'll be buying! Nokia's reliability seems to be gone and it's time to move on....
