Sengaja Mengundang Kemurkaan Ilahi: Illinois Nikahkan 36 Pasangan Sejenis

-- AFP, AP.

Another meaning to 1Malaysia: PLUNDER FIRST, PERFORMANCE NOW

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

By Debra Chong
June 03, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — Former Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) chief executive Tan Sri Ani Arope is blaming the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) for rising electricity tariffs, saying the powerful agency forced the national power company to sign lopsided purchase deals nearly 20 years ago.
Ani said EPU, which he sarcastically dubbed "Economic Plundering Unit", forced Tenaga to buy electricity from an independent power producer (IPP), believed to be Genting Sanyen, at 14 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh) despite an existing offer of 12 sen/kWh then; other IPPs then were charging 16 sen/kWh.
Genting Sanyen became the first IPP to transfer 15 million watts (MW) in electricity to TNB's national grid on April 15 and is scheduled to complete a RM1.8 billion upgrade on its existing gas-fired plant with a capacity for 720 MW by June next year.
"You don't need to go to a fanciful business school to figure out why we need a tariff hike — just revisit the terms given to some IPPs," Ani, who helmed the utility company between 1990 and 1996, said in his last Facebook posting three days ago.
"With the take-or-pay clause and with the 40 per cent excess reserve that we have today, one only has to produce half of one's capacity and be paid 80 per cent of the agreed capacity. Well done the then-EPU — Economic Plundering Unit," he added, mocking the economic unit under the Prime Minister's Department.
Ani called for a review of the original terms with the IPPs as the storm over energy price deals continues to build up.
DAP publicity chief Tony Pua cited today Ani's 2006 interview with English daily, The Star, to increase pressure on the federal government to declassify the power purchase agreements (PPAs) inked between TNB and the IPPs.
Ani caused a stir 15 years ago when he chose to resign from his executive chairman post rather than sign the imbalanced deals, which saw the first generation of IPPs created, such as YTL Power Services, Powertek and Malakoff during the Mahathir administration.
"TNB is the whipping boy. TNB has no control of the price it has to pay to the IPPs. Get to the source of the problem," said the Penang-born who turned 79 on May 17.
The Najib administration has been savaged for allegedly protecting the interests of IPPs rather than the public.
Putrajaya announced the 7.12 per cent hike in electricity rates in an effort to trim a subsidy bill that would otherwise double to RM21 billion this year and promised the hike will not affect 75 per cent of domestic consumers.
But power prices will now rise by as much as 2.3 sen per kWh in areas taking TNB's electricity supply, a potential source of public anger just ahead of a general election expected within the year.
The Star daily reported today the government was close to inking a deal for a 1,000 MW coal-fired plant in Manjung which will charge 25 sen/kWh.

"Peace" protesters proud to call themselves "warriors"

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:39 AM PDT

The month-long saga of the Malaysian "aid" ship to Gaza is finally winding down...but not without one more illuminating fact.
Although the Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPF) Malaysia failed in its mission to send humanitarian aid right to the people of Gaza, it is proud of having broken Israel's illegal seige of Gazan waters.

PGPF chairman Tan Sri Norian Mai said this success was meaningful for PGPF, apart from the spirit and courage of those onboard the cargo ship MV Finch carrying the humanitarian aid, regarding them as warriors.

"Although this mission cannot be said to be 100 per cent successful, it managed to break Israel's illegal seige as the ship managed to enter the Gazan waters before being stopped by the Israeli navy," he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, here, Wednesday.

Dr Siti Hasmah said her husband, former premier and PGPF president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was proud of all the mission volunteers and thanked them for their sacrifice.

"Dr Mahathir is unable to be present here to welcome home the heroes today, but he wishes to congratulate and thank them for their sacrifice....he's very proud of these warriors.
"Peace" activists proudly calling themselves "warriors"?

It's also funny how no matter what happens, these anti-Israel agitators will pretend to have won. If Israel had stopped the ship further out to sea, they would claim "piracy." When done closer in, they claim "victory." More like a bunch of Pussies and Wimps, read how this Pussy whines, "This is totally unacceptable and the Egyptian Government's actions should be criticised in no uncertain terms". Kalah Menang Tetap Setia Pada Parti

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:50 AM PDT

-tvsnews

E.coli Toksik Cetus Wabak Baru

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:08 AM PDT

– Reuters

My PLHIV families…

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 05:51 AM PDT

I was updating my Education Sponsorship for Children accounts when I realised that there were quite a number of my clients whom I had not visited for quite some time. Most of my clients I'd visit during the initial stages after being assigned to them, to assess their needs and to help out wherever necessary. Then once they are stable, I only check on them from time to time, either by visiting them, or just by calling them. Sometimes, for those outstation, I'd take the opportunity to meet them at the hospital when they come for their appointment, even if it's not on the date of my appointment.

Last year, there were 2 families whom I'd visit regularly – Sofie and Lin. A club agreed to sponsor groceries for both families and my job was to get the supply of groceries from the minimarket and deliver them to these two families. When the club approached me and asked me to recommend 2 families I purposely recommended these 2.

Sofie was (and still is) too weak to work. Every time she felt a bit better she'd try to work but she'd end up getting sick. So her sister and I told her to just take jobs which she could do at home. Even at home if she walks around too much, she'd end up unable to get up for a few days. So now she takes orders to make kuih-muih and the customers will go to her house to get their orders.

Although the club is no longer sponsoring the groceries this year, I still do get supplies of groceries for Sofie's family using the money donated by my friends. And I still do visit them on monthly basis due to Sofie's condition. I need to make sure the children are not deprived of their basic needs.

As for Lin, it was such a problematic year for her last year and the monthly supply of groceries did help her a lot. But I did tell her the grocery supplies would only be for one year and told her to get prepared. And she did get herself prepared. Her condition wasn't as bad as Sofie's, in fact one look at her, she looks healthy. She took up a short course on sewing and by the final quarter of last year, she was already taking orders. Woot! And by Feb this year, her 3rd daughter completed her diploma and got a job immediately. The eldest daughter then completed her nursing course last month and now looking for a job. Her second daughter is taking medic, so she needs a longer time to get her degree. I can already see a brighter future for this family, insyaAllah.

Fuzi is another one whose family always had problems. With her Indonesian citizenship, and her marriage in southern Thailand which was never registered by her late husband, she had problems getting identity cards for her children. Alhamdulillah all those problems are settled – her 3 older children have already got their MyKad ready. Financially, her schooling children are under our Sponsorship programme while an anonymous blog reader of mine banks in a fixed amount into Fuzi's bank account every month to support Fuzi's family.

Yah too used to be giving me headaches. Solving her financial problems back then wasn't so much of a problem, but when at one time after she went angau over Mr Darling (yes, Lin's ex-hubby), the once-upon-a-time tough single mom, became so ridiculously childish – even more childish than her own children!! When Mr Darling ditched her, she even resorted to sleeping with one man after another, just to seek revenge – hoping they'd get infected with HIV. Duh! Betul bagi pening kepala la ini perempuan! She knew I was mad at her and after a while she called saying she "dah baik". Hehehe. Now she works in a factory and alhamdulillah her children are all back with her instead of at an orphanage.

Another family with their never-ending financial problems, Mr & Mrs K, also gave me a surprise recently. When Mrs K called wanting to meet up with me at the hospital, initially I thought she wanted to come up with another sad story on why she desperately needed money. To my surprise, she just wanted to give me a tudung. She now sews and sells tudungs for extra income and so she wanted to give one to me as her appreciation for my help.

Then there's Maria. She never needed financial help. But used to call me just because she really needed to talk to someone, and she simply couldn't talk to her husband who refused to talk about her HIV. As a matter of fact, the first time she called me (before that we met at the HIV clinic when I happened to be on duty), she was crying and crying I couldn't really understand what she was trying to say. And once she sent me a message at 2 am asking if I could find her a place to stay. She just had a fight with her husband and the husband told her to get out of the house. I was fast asleep when the message came in, and so I only read the message when I woke up for subuh. By the time I called her, her husband had already apologised and said he didn't mean to chase her out of the house. Anyway, ever since she started working at a nursery, at least it kept her a bit busy and so she no longer calls to talk about her problems. Last year for the first time she joined our Family Day with her daughter.

My other clients? Nuri seemed to be doing okay after the initial help that we gave her. Not wanting to be too dependent on others, as far as she could, Nuri would avoid seeking help from others. As for Sha, her husband had been very supportive (this is her second husband, she got HIV from her first husband), and so unlike Maria, Sha didn't really need to talk things out with me. She'd only call me if there were matters she needed clarification especially regarding HIV.

Hana too had not been giving me much problem of late. Likewise Murni, Rozi, Wani, Shila, Ifa and Liza.

Overall, while some of them did give me headaches 2 or 3 years ago, this year so far, there had not been too much drama in the lives of my clients, and so I didn't really have much problem handling my clients' cases this year. I think my regular blog followers would be able to see that too… compared to my postings in 2007, 2008 and 2009, this year's postings had not been too dramatic… :)

I do hope I'm not speaking too soon though…

[Video] Umno Bebalkan Rakyat Islam, Kotorkan Politik Negara

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:14 AM PDT

The Naïve and Sentimental Novelist

Posted: 29 May 2011 06:09 PM PDT

My review which was in the Reads Monthly section of The Sunday Star yesterday :

What actually happens when we read a literary novel? And what is in the mind of an author when he writes one? These are the central questions addressed by Orhan Pamuk in The Naïve and Sentimental Novelist. And since the Turkish writer is both an avid reader and the Nobel Prize winning author of several internationally acclaimed novels (including Snow, My Name is Red, and The White Castle), he is extremely well-qualified to do so.

The title of the book is taken from the famous essay by Friedrich Schiller On Naive and Sentimental Poetry. Pamuk's "naïve" novelists, he says, are unaware of the techniques they are using, and they write spontaneously as if carrying out a natural act, as opposed to "sentimental" or reflective novelists "who are concerned with artificiality of the text and its failure to attain reality". I have to say though that I did not find the distinction a particularly useful scaffold for Pamuk's arguments, particularly as the author himself admits that all great novelists ultimately have to be a blend of both. At times, his discussion seems rather abstract and academic, perhaps not surprisingly, as these six linked essays were initially delivered in the form of lectures at Harvard University in 2009.

But it is when he writes more anecdotally and personally that he is at his best. Anyone who has fallen passionately in love with reading will recognize themselves in Pamuk's descriptions of his younger self, encountering the great works of fiction for the first time, discovering in them important truths about life, and acquiring from them "a breathtaking sense of freedom and self-confidence". Pamuk draws on the classics for his examples, including Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and War and Peace, James Joyce's Ulysses, Proust's In Search of Lost Time, and Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.

Pamuk captures the special magic of the literary form. He describes how the words on the page become invisible as we look through them onto an entire landscape with the ability "to oscillate between the long view and fleeting moments, general thoughts and specific events, at a speed no other literary genre can offer." We can simultaneously see, he says "the broader picture, the whole landscape, the thoughts of the individual, and the nuances of the character's mood."

More than once he refers to the "intense and tiring effort" required to read a literary novel, and he lists a whole lot of different things that the reader actually has to do simultaneously to connect with the text. We observe the scene and follow the narrative, and transform the words on the page into images. Our memory labours intensively to hold all the threads of the story and what we know of the characters. We appreciate the style, make judgments about the moral choices the characters make, and congratulate ourselves for being able to read "a difficult" novel.

As we read, we are constantly wondering, he says, how much of the novel tells of real experience and how much is an act of imagination, and also how much of the author's own life is invested in the fiction. Indeed, he devotes a whole essay to the topic, but concludes, not surprisingly, that "the novel is not completely imaginary nor completely factual."

But even as we are deriving pleasure from the surface details of the novel, we are searching at a deeper level for "motive, idea, purpose", in fact what he calls "a secret centre". Reading literary fiction, he says, is the act of determining the real centre of the novel, "whose source remains ambiguous but which nevertheless illuminates the whole." It is the slow uncovering of this centre that gives the reader full satisfaction.

Popular genre fiction, he says, typically lacks this centre, and is read largely for comfort. But he does single out some genre writers (including Patricia Highsmith, John Le Carre, Stanislaw Lem and Philip K. Dick) as authors whose work can be read at a deeper level.

Pamuk is perhaps at his most controversial when he talks about the creation of character in the novel. He suggests that over the past 150 years our curiosity about characters has taken up much more space in the novel than it has in life, and that "It has sometimes become too self-indulgent, almost vulgar". He believes that "People do not actually have as much character as we find portrayed in novels" , and reckons that human character is not nearly as important in shaping our live as it is made out to be in the novels and literary criticism of the west. This certainly is food for serious thought.

He goes on to attack the idea of the character-driven plot, where the author seems to expect that "… the hero like a prompter on stage will whisper to the novelist the entire course of the novel." This approach, taught extensively on creative writing courses, "merely goes to show that many novelists begin to write their novels without being sure of their story, and that is the only way they are able to write." He says that in his own writing his protagonist's character will be formed, as a real person's is, by situations and events.

Much of what is written about literature in academic circles is made inaccessible to the ordinary book-lover and writer by the jargon of literary theory. This book can be enjoyed by both the enthusiastic reader and by writers, and should serve to spark deeper discussion of the craft of the novel - whether or not one chooses to agree on all points with Pamuk.

And of course, perhaps more importantly for fans of Pamuk's work, The Naïve and Sentimental Novelist gives an intriguing insight into the preoccupations and approach to writing of one of the world's most important authors.

-HM

Pelajar Diperkosa Ayah Tiri Depan Ibu

Malah, sejak Mac lalu, mangsa mendakwa 11 kali diperkosa bapa tirinya.

-HM

[Bergambar] Pengundian Memilih Barisan Kepimpinan Telah Bermula

Perwakilan PAS mula undi, diramal saji barisan kanan kuat

Sejak pemilihan 2005 sehingga 2009, jawatan timbalan presiden menyaksikan pertandingan.

"Saya harap abang Mat menang.

-FMT

Tiga Lelaki Larikan Isteri Di Awal Pagi

-hm

Now Is The Time!

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:16 AM PDT

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with.

We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire.

The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now.

Your life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred D Souza. He said, "For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."

This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have.

Stop waiting ...

until you finish school,
until you go back to school,
until you lose ten pounds,
until you gain ten pounds,
until you have kids,
until your kids leave the house,
until you start work,
until you retire,
until you get married,
until you get divorced,
until Friday night,
until Sunday morning,
until you get a new car or home,
until your car or home is paid off,
until spring,
until summer,
until fall,
until winter,
until you are off welfare,
until the first or fifteenth,
until your song comes on,
until you've had a drink,
until you've sobered up,
until you die,
until you are born again

...to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy.

My Blog has Been Hijacked!!!

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:14 AM PDT

My blog has been hijacked and is being redirected to some stupid site. I have no idea how that happened and only found out when wifey told me that my link on her reader seems to be redirecting me to some other site! She also said that my recent post widget on Spiff was also redirecting her to another page. Darn!

I don't know how that happened cos I really didn't do anything to my blog. So I looked up the internet and found out it had something to do with third party widget being the culprit so I removed every single third party widget on my side bar and so far the recent post widget in Spiffy seems to be redirecting me back to my blog ... phew! I hope it stays that way.

I just have no idea if it's working properly in your Google readers or not and will only know if some kind soul leaves me a comment to let me know that they can access my blog again and not get redirected to some antique site.

I hate people who hijack your own blogs. Get a life you morons!
