Kuan Yin Teng – Temple Of The Goddess Of Mercy, Penang

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 10:36 AM PDT

On a find Tuesday afternoon, I was feeling bored and I went to Pitt Street alone to the famous Kuan Yin Teng (Kuan Yin Temple/Temple Of The Goddess Of Mercy) to walkaround, take some photos and pray a little bit. It was a hot day, yet it's nice to go there to take photos.

As you know, this temple is one of the oldest temple in Penang and have been serving the Taoist devotees well over the century. It's one of the building in the listing of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and people still going there to pray everyday and it's get crowded during the first and the 15th day of the Lunar calendar.

The temple houses several God and Goddess of the Toaism. It was constructed in the early 1800s by the Chinese immigrant. My grandma is a frequent visitor of the temple too.

Outside the temple, there's many stalls selling praying material like joss sticks and candle and they will be touting you to buy their stuff when you passes by. Actually, it's all the same, what's matter is the heart and sincerity of praying.

There's actually Chinese opera outside the temple, serving the God and Goddess for a spiritual entertainment show, however the opera show was off during that time.

As you know, I have some nice feel towards holy places like temple and church because these place give me a sense of peace and quiet. They all features nice artwork and architecture too especially old Chinese temple and old churches in the European countries.

I heard that there's plan of revamping the praying experience at the temple which is that no joss stick will be allow to go bring in into the inner hall. Praying will be done outside the temple, just like the Wong Tai Sin temple in Hong Kong. This is to preserve and maintain a clean and holy environment in the temple. Somehow, I don't know whether it will be implemented or not.

This is a must visit place in Penang. =)

the infamous ‘after friday prayers’ protest

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 10:24 AM PDT

yes, once again, they pray and pray and pray inside the mosque on their 'holy' day, friday….. then when they came out of prayer…. they suddenly become abusive, aggressive, attacking, like running amok, full of anger – so what they were doing in the mosque praying??? aren't they ashamed? just out of prayers and behaving so violently! tsk tsk tsk! it was so telling on them and how they practise their faith.

ok in case for some of you uninitiated ones, who don't know what i was talking about – it was about the street protest by the THE SAMSENG (UMNO), THE KASAR (PERKASA) and THE SAMPAH (SAMP) in penang yesterday (1 july).
(translation: SAMSENG – hooligans, KASAR – rough, SAMPAH – rubbish.  oh and SAMP is the acronym for 'suara anak-anak mamak pulau pinang'  or 'the voice of the mamaks in penang', the one headed by abdul ghani keranda.)

ok here is the report in malaysiakin, from my friends, susan and chia ming. it's better for you to read it first, before you read my comments.

300 protest against Penang CM for supporting Bersih

3.14pm

Some 300 supporters from Umno, Perkasa and an NGO named Suara Anak-anak Malaysia held a demonstration in downtown Penang this afternoon to protest against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Bersih 2.0.

NONEEight protesters, including SAAM chief Mohamed Ghani Abdul Jiman, were arrested by the police, who deployed some 100 officers and men to thwart the gathering.

The protesters marched about a kilometre from the historic Kapitan Keling Mosque to Komtar after Friday prayers.

They demanded Lim's resignation as chief minister on grounds that he had openly thrown his support behind the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9, which the police have deemed an illegal assembly.

Protest turns into duck parade

Marching all the way from the mosque along Jalan Chulia and Carnavon Street heading to Komtar, the protestors hit the windshields of cars and violently shoved aside two photographers – one from Chinese press Guan Ming Daily and another from a TV station.

NONEAfter the arrests and after police sounded the siren for the protestors to disperse, they gathered along Jalan Penang, where several Umno leaders, including Senator Ezam Mohd Nor, gave speeches condemning Lim and the state government.

Ezam, who was former PKR Youth chief, warned Lim that there would be more such protests in the future.

"I believe if we continue to do this, we do not need to wait for the general elections, he would leave before that," he added, to cheers from the crowd.

At about 3.30pm, another group marched from Jalan Penang into the Komtar area, carrying two ducks, and shouting the name of Penang state exco and Batu Maung assemblyman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim. They were poking fun and imitating Malik's voice.

The police, meanwhile, stood watch and allowed them to carry on with their antics.

Around 4pm, a group of 30 proceeded to the Penang bridge, where they held a separate rally, carrying banners, waving the Malaysian flag and handing flags out to passers-by.

Another journalist from Sin Chew Daily was punched on the back while the protestors warned that they would throw him into the sea if he continued to snap their photos at close range.

This mass of people resulted in a traffic jam along the bridge for about 30 minutes, with the protesters blocking two lanes, but the three traffic policemen present did not take any action.

The demonstrators repeatedly shouted "Guan Eng is a Communist", dubbing him the "most racist leader in the history of the country".

The banners carried messages like "Bumiputeras are in government and Chinese in Opposition, is there any hope for the Penang Chinese?" and "Two coalition = two party system".

In a related development, Penang police chief Ayub Yaakob confirmed that seven protestors were arrested and will be probed for participating in the "illegal" assembly. The ages of those nabbed are between 27 and 46.

Ayub said the force had been informed earlier about the rally and had deployed its officers to the protest locations to ensure public order.

"We hope this would be the last (protest)," he told reporters at a press conference in Penang.

Reporters also met Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Mohamed Hashim at the police headquarters, where the latter said he was there to speak to the CPO about the protest.

"I wanted to understand what actually happened," he said, adding that the demonstration was not a real one (tipu).

When told that several journalist were assaulted during the event, Zahrain distanced himself from the matter, saying he was not involved and did not know the full details.

It is learnt that later, Ezam turned himself in, taking the total number of those arrested to eight.

——————–

look. the protesters marched about 1 km from the mosque to komtar. marched 1 km. why didn't the police stop them?? the police should stop them immediately and not allowed them to reach komtar! talk about the bersih 2.0 walk as being illegal… which hasn't happenned yet and this walk happened right in front of the police' eyes… and oh it was not an illegal walk to the police? if bersih 2.0 not allowed to walk, why allowed these rubbish (samp) rough (perkasa) hooligans (umno) to walk? of course… what else – DOUBLE STANDARD!  the police belongs to the federal/umno government.

see, the protesters even turned violent to hit the windshield of cars passing by and shoving two photographers.  hmm… so tell us something we don't know yet. so you see if on 9 july, there were 3 groups of protesters (perkasa, umno youth, bersih) walking, we will know for sure who's the violent ones.

listen to what this ezam boy said when he warned that there would be more protests coming up:   "I believe if we continue to do this, we do not need to wait for the general elections, he would leave before that,"  he added, to cheers from the crowd.

my toes are laughing! LOL! go ahead and plan for more protests… go ahead, be my guest. the more you protest, the more it will spell the downfall of umno, i tell you because we penangites are behind our CM. we penangites can see your folly.  my dear ezam, if you continue to do this (and i hope you will), for the next general election,  more people of penang will vote lim guan eng, i tell you. umno will fall even harder, i tell you. so i guess i should say thank you to you!

about the group that  carried two ducks and imitate malik's voice… tsk tsk, ain't that such a childish behavior (not forgetting it's personal attack).  but then again, what do you expect from these people with pea brains. for example earlier on thursday,  the leader of the SAMPah group, the keranda guy, was protesting in front of the police HQ against an NGO, and when datuk dr toh kin woon was speaking, he said something like "this man is so old already… he will be dead soon." ain't that very childish? (and again personal attack).

can you believe it – while these people were ducking around and poking fun at an assemblyman, the police just stood there and did nothing. NOTHING! maybe the police were amused too and thought it was all in good fun? but what happened if it was the other way round? DAP people poking fun at the DPM or any umno assemblyman? for sure they (DAP) would be told to stop at once or they would be hauled up.  ok say it again – DOUBLE  STANDARD!

same thing happened (the DOUBLE STANDARD!) when the group went to the penang bridge.  they held banners and waved flags right taking up two lanes of the bridge, thus causing traffic jam on the bridge. 3 traffic policemen were there but they just stood by and watch!! you'd better believe it!

yeah yeah so the police chief said 7 people had been arrested but i guess it was just for show and i bet you who knows by now (or at least just after 12 hours) they would have been released without being charged.  strange… the police chief said they knew of this protest beforehand… and he had 'deployed its officers to the protest locations to ensure public order'.  really kah? then all the more you should stop them at once but why you allowed them to march all the way from the mesjid to komtar???   ahh perhaps that was the reason. the police knew about it already and wanted to allow them to march. why? because they are not from PR party (same thing like saying that two words again – DS).

it's very strange when i think over – these people marched to protest against an illegal march, which has yet to happen but the march the people were involved in, was itself illegal!  wait… it gets stranger… the police did not stop this illegal march, while the police stop people who did not even march but just wearing the t-shirt.  YA ALLAH!! what is this country coming to???
(reminds me to point you to read kee thuan chye's piece of the same title, different topic but related)

see if you can access malaysiakini's photo gallery (if no, i will put up the photos later).

Bersih: Listen to Sanusi Junid

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:18 AM PDT

To those who are looking forward to Bersih's July 9 mass rally, please read what Umno veteran Tan Sri Sanusi Junid writes about what 'demonstrations' are all about. Some demos are carried out for good causes but the rest are just to challenge the authorities, to create unnecessary cross-hatred and to champion politics of individuals.

If you are joining them for the sake of fun, there will be no thrill in store. The police will not issue any permit. The propagators of Bersih are doing it for Anwar Ibrahim and for Pakatan Rakyat.

If you love your country and want to retain the social harmony and political stability, do stay out of it. Unless you really want to court trouble. Read what Sanusi writes here...

"Penganjur demonstrasi ingin menghukum sebelum mana-mana pihak membuat dosa.

So, look before you leap!

[Bergambar] Dunia Saksikan, Bukan BERSIH Tetapi UMNO Pencetus & Peneraju Keganasan

300 bantah KM P Pinang kerana sokong BERSIH

-mk

Rowdy Umno protesters disrupt city life

About 300 supporters of Umno and Perkasa stage a violent protest against the state government and Bersih.

GEORGE TOWN: Some 300 supporters from Umno, Perkasa and an unregistered NGO Suara Anak Anak Mamak Pulau Pinang held a nearly three-hour noisy march and violent protest in the city centre, condemning both the Pakatan Rakyat state government and the Bersih 2.0 rally.

The crowd first gathered at the historic Masjid Kapitan Keling after Friday prayers at 2.30pm.

Chanting anti-state government and anti-Bersih slogans, they then marched for about 1.5km from the mosque to Komtar via Lebuh Chulia and Jalan Penang.

Their march against the traffic flow caused a standstill and tension in the city.

Eyewitnesses said the rowdy protesters hit windshields of cars, and violently shoved aside two meida men – a photographer from the Chinese newspaper Guan Ming Daily and a videographer from a TV station.

At Komtar, the protesters chanted anti-state government and anti-Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng slogans.

They demanded Lim's resignation as chief minister on grounds that he had openly thrown his support behind the Bersih 2.0 rally planned for July 9.

Scuffles broke out when police finally took action to disperse the crowd.

Police detained eight people, including Senator Ezam Mohd Nor and Mamak Association chief Mohamed Ghani Abdul Jiman, for allegedly taking part in an illegal assembly.

Police deployed some 100 officers and men to thwart the gathering.

After the arrests and after police sounded the siren for the protesters to disperse, they gathered along Jalan Penang, where several Umno leaders, including Ezam, gave anti-state government and anti-Lim speeches.

Ezam, who was former PKR Youth chief, warned Lim that there would be more such protests in the future to force him out of office before the next general election.

Another group of demonstrators marched from Jalan Penang to the Komtar area, carrying two ducks.

They called out Penang state executive councillor and Batu Maung assemblyman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim. The police just stood by and allowed the protesters to perform their antics.

After the protest, the demonstrators marched back to the mosque via Lebuh Carnavon.

Another group proceeded to Penang Bridge. They held a separate rally, carrying banners, waving the Malaysian flag and handing out flags to passers-by.

'Most racist leader'

A journalist from Sin Chew Daily was hit on the back while the protesters warned him that they would throw him into the sea if he continued to snap their photos at close range.

The protest caused massive traffic jam on the bridge but policemen failed to take any action.

The demonstrators chanted "Guan Eng is a Communist" and claimed that he was the "most racist leader in the history of the country".

They carried banners carrying messages such as "Bumiputeras are in the government and Chinese in opposition, is there any hope for the Penang Chinese?"

The protest today was similar to the one held on March 14, 2008, a week after Pakatan captured the state.

At a press conference later, chief police officer deputy commissioner Ayub Yaakob denied receiving any directive from Lim to round up and remand all the protesters.

"I did not receive any directive. Police can take action on their own to preserve peace and harmony," he said.

Outside the police headquarters, Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Hashim insisted that Lim had issued such a directive to Ayub.

"I have information from my boys that Lim had issued such a directive. He is cruel.

"Why can't he allow a peaceful demonstration against him?" asked Zahrain.

Also present were Umno divisional heads Ahmad Ibni Hajar (Tanjung) and Musa Syeikh Fadzir (Bukit Mertajam). -FMT

Delicious curry mee

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 04:00 AM PDT

I've long complained about the lack of good Curry Mee on the Penang mainland. However, here is one that I can definitely give the "two thumbs up" sign.

This Curry Mee hawker stall is located at the morning food court in Jalan Bukit Kecil and costs only RM2.50 per bowl. Apart from the pieces of long beans and the fried tau pok, there are also generous helpings of cockles and cubes of curdled pig's blood. But do ask for their extra chilli paste. That's where the whole delicious secret comes from....

If you are using a GPS to locate the stall, the coordinates are 5.354851,100.459255

Mohd Sabu: Kalau Pilihan Raya Telus, Pakatan Rakyat Sudah Jadi Kerajaan

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 08:09 AM PDT

.

Manakala dua lagi tuntutan baru ialah mengukuhkan kreadibiliti isnsitusi awam dann melanjutkan tempoh kempen pilihan raya sekurang- kurangnya 21 hari.

Mohamad turut berharap pihak berkuasa dapat menjaga keselamatan rakyat ketika himpunan BERSIH 2.0 dan bukannya bertindak menjadi alat kerajaan pemerintah.

"Kita pergi nak berjalan 'walk for democracy' jadi kenapa muncul persatuan silat nak mandi darah apa semua ni...kenapa pihak sebegini mampu bercakap begitu? Sebab mereka menganggap polis dipihak mereka, sebab apa Umno berani bercakap begitu..sudah pasti mereka menganggap polis dipihak mereka," kata Mat Sabu. -tvsnews

Iceland

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 06:28 AM PDT

In Iceland, when the days are dark, the night sky comes alive with the northern lights. Then there are those volcanoes and hot springs

phenomenon

The mercury has dipped to way below zero. The cold is gnawing at my hands through my gloves. And the wind is roaring at Mount Skalafell, outraged that anyone should take to its 1,800-foot summit in such weather. I barely notice. Because above, the sky is moving. Splattered against the stars, a hazy patch of white is swirling like milk poured into black coffee.

A few hours earlier, my guide Ragnar Lovdal, had predicted this, almost sniffing the air as he declared that the cloudless skies would hold their clarity into the evening. He was right. And there they are: the northern lights.

In theory, I should be disappointed. I've listened to the dry science, to the explanation that, far from being supernatural, this iridescent display occurs when particles emitted by the Sun hit the magnetic fields above the Earth's poles.

And this is by no means the most dazzling example of aurora borealis, a phenomenon that can dance through a half-rainbow of yellows, greens and reds, depending on the conditions and the viewer's proximity to the top of the globe.

Yet I'm elated. After three nights under a shrouded firmament, we are finally in the presence of something that seems otherworldly.

Not only are the northern lights utterly at home here — visible from October to early March — but Iceland is a country that defines the word "otherworldly".

Dramatic views

A day before my date with the northern lights, I join Ragnar on the Golden Circle — a 306-kilometre route that links the key sights in the south and centre of the island.

This charred volcanic panorama is all the more dramatic for being seen in the darkest season.

The Sun rises sluggishly over Iceland in winter, scraping its belly on the horizon at about 10am, then hanging low. The effect is an almost lunar, wan light ebbing over cooled lava and basalt.

Hekla, the 4,882-foot volcano, has erupted four times in 30 years. In medieval times, the locals regarded its caldera as the mouth of destruction. But something about the scene binds it more to the 9th century, when Norse settlers first came ashore. This is a realm of the pagan deities, of Thor, Odin and Freyja.

This impression stays with me as we tour the Golden Circle — not least at Gullfoss, a three-step waterfall, where the Hvita River churns and spits through a steep canyon. Geysir, meanwhile, is a geyser of such fame that its name has become a byword but, nowadays, its thunder has been stolen by Strokkur nearby, which fires loud jets of water from its crater every five minutes.

As I approach the Blue Lagoon, 48 kilometres southwest of Reykjavik, the Sun is compressed to a flat disc behind the steam belching from the lava-heated bathing area. As I dig my toes into the soft ooze, I ponder that Iceland is not so hard after all.

Bukan PSM, Tetapi UMNO BN Yang Komunis

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 06:06 AM PDT

-tvsnews

BN Takkan Menang Jika SPR Berlaku Adil

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 05:03 AM PDT

Pembangkang tak menang jika kami tak adil, kata SPR

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 03:30 AM PDT

Malaysiakini melaporkan

Putera Albert 11 digesa pulangkan derma Rosmah

Sebuah pertubuhan bukan kerajaan menggesa Putera Albert II supaya memulangkan derma 100,000 euro yang disumbangkan oleh isteri perdana menteri Malaysia, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

NONEBadan pejuang alam sekitar, Bruno Manser Fund (BMF), "mengesyaki"

Rumah beralamat No 1138, Kampung Bagan Serai, Permatang Pauh mungkin tak sehebat Kediaman Rasmi Perdana Menteri.

8 Tuntutan Bersih 2.0:
  • BERSIHkan Senarai undi
  • Mereformasikan Undi Pos
  • Penggunaan Dakwat Kekal
  • Akses Media yang Bebas dan Adil
  • Tempoh Kempen Minima 21 hari
  • Kukuhkan Institusi Awam
  • Hentikan Rasuah
  • Hentikan Politik Kotor
Adakah Tuntutan BERSIH 2.0 bernombor 1 boleh dianggap "Tidak Relevan"..? Pengerusi Suruhanjaya Pilihan-Raya kena jawab SEGERA...!!!

Sekatan Ke Atas BERSIH: Tiada Situasi Menang Buat Umno & UMNO Tidak Akan Menang

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 03:36 AM PDT

FMT

FreeWheel Wheelchair Attachment In Malaysia

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 02:22 AM PDT

The wheelchair rolls well on smooth surfaces. Roads, pavements, grass and pebbled paths is another story. The small front caster can easily get caught between bumps and cracks. Apart from making it difficult to push, they make rides bumpy which in turn causes spasms of the legs. Traversing these surfaces could quickly damage the wheelchair as well. I avoid such terrains as much as possible. For someone who likes the great outdoors, it is indeed a difficult choice for me to make.

This is the same dilemma wheelchair users all over face when we want to go off the beaten path, until the FreeWheel Wheelchair Attachment was invented, that is. When I ordered the Tilite ZRA Series 2, I got the FreeWheel shipped together with the wheelchair to save on freight charges. With the FreeWheel hooked to the footrest, going across grassy fields or sandy beaches became a breeze. This practical mechanism is the brainchild of Pat Dougherty, a wheelchair user himself, who saw the need for an easier way to get the wheelchair across challenging terrains.

The FreeWheel's design is simple and ingenious. It consists of a 12.5 inch wheel attached to a fork. Attaching the Freewheel to the wheelchair is easy once the clamp is properly adjusted to fit the footrest. Swing the wheel out and place the clamp over the footrest. Pull the lever back and the FreeWheel is securely clamped to the footrest. Push the wheelchair forward to turn the wheel back. This lifts the front casters one inch off the ground. And all is good to go!

On my recent trip to Penang, I used the Freewheel at Gurney Drive, the Botanical Gardens and several other places. The ride was certainly smoother even over rough roads and paved walkways. Moving around was a joy. In tight spaces like at the food courts, I simply unclamped the FreeWheel, stored it by attaching it to the perch fastened to the back rigidizer bar. With the FreeWheel out of the way, I manuevered around crowds with ease. With the FreeWheel, I do not have to think twice about where I can go now. Using the wheelchair when I am out and out has become less inconvenient. Truly, the FreeWheel Wheelchair Attachment is the best thing since sliced bread for wheelchair users. Thanks Pat, for a wonderful invention.

Are you happy with what you have, who you are, who you married or what you do?

Happiness is a state of mind. For some, it takes a lot to make them happy whilst for others, even a smile, a phone call, an email or jottings on a FB wall can make them happy.

If you are feeling the blues today, here's something to perk you up for the weekend. Let me tell you about Nick Vujicic.

According to Wikipedia:

Nicholas James Vujicic (born 4 December 1982) is a preacher and motivational speaker – born with Tetra-amelia, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs.

He struggled as a child, eventually came to terms with his disability and started his own non-profit organization Life Without Limbs – at age seventeen. He is widely known as a motivational speaker, giving talks wordwide on life with a disability, hope, and finding meaning in life.

The eldest child of a Serbian family,[2] Vujicic (pronounced 'Vooy-cheech') was born in Brisbane, Australia.[3] He was limbless, missing both arms at shoulder level, as well as legless. His feet were toeless except for two toes on one foot. Initially, his parents were devastated, though Vujicic was otherwise healthy.

Originally prohibited by Victoria state law from attending a mainstream school because of his physical disability, even though he was not mentally impaired, Vujicic became one of the first disabled students integrated into a mainstream school, once the laws changed.[4]

Bullied at school, Vujicic grew depressed and by the age of 8, contemplated suicide. At age 10, he tried to drown himself in 6 inches of water, but did not go through with it out of love for his parents.[5] After praying to grow arms and legs, Vujicic eventually realized that his accomplishments could inspire others – and became grateful for his life.[6] A key turning point came when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability. Vujicic realized he wasn't unique in his struggles[7] and began to embrace and transcend his disability.

He began to master the daily tasks of life. He learned to write using the two toes on his left foot with a special grip that slid onto his big toe. He learned to use a computer and type using the "heel and toe" method. He learned to throw tennis balls, play drum pedals, get himself a glass of water, comb his hair, brush his teeth, answer the phone and shave.

In grade seven he was elected captain of his school and worked with the student council on fund-raising events for local charities and disability campaigns. When he was seventeen, he started to give talks at his prayer group,[8] and eventually started his non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs.

In 2005 Vujicic was nominated for the "Young Australian of the Year" Award.

Vujicic currently lives in California.
