Groucho and me

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 09:16 AM PDT

I've just turned to reading this book, Groucho and Me, written by Julius Henry Marx. I'm now on page 62 and there are still about three quarters of the book left. Don't be fooled by the title, though, because Julius Marx is Groucho Marx.

And this is certainly a "rags to riches" story, written in a manner that is wholly and unmistakenly Groucho's. But if you expect this to be an accurate account of his own intimate life story, you'll find that it's not. Every anecdote he wrote about his journey through life (until page 62, anyway), ends with a punch line. I don't know whether to believe him or not, but the entertainment value certainly makes up for its believability.

Menyayat Hati: Kanak-kanak Perempuan Mati Digilis Bapa

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 09:44 AM PDT

- BERNAMA

Gerakan: Charge, if not release 6 PSM detainees

 By theedgemalaysia.com | The Edge – Mon, Jul 18, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: The Gerakan has called on the government to release the six members of Parti Sosialis Malaysia detainees if no offences have been committed by them.
Gerakan deputy president Datuk Chang Ko Youn said on Monday, July 18 that if the six had indeed committed offences, then they should be charged without delay.
"The continued detention and the uncertainty surrounding the whole episode will undermine the image of the government in the eyes of the world.
"The country upholds the Rule of Law and protection of fundamental human rights where anyone detained must be informed of  the grounds of detention and shall be charged promptly if there are sufficient evidence to charge the person," he said.
Chang, who is also Gerakan human rights and law bureau chief, said by keeping the people guessing without any satisfactory public explanation does not augur well for Malaysia's record in human rights protection.
"Waging an ideological campaign without the use of force or violence is not a heinous crime and shall not be treated as criminal.  Thus a public statement on the circumstances leading to the arrest and detention of the six PSM detainees shall be made forthwith," he said.

Today @ Malaysiakini:

Jeyakumar's vow to go on a hunger strike until the PSM 6 were released also put additional pressure on the police.

They were initially detained on suspicion of planning to wage war against the King but it was learnt that the charge was changed several times, at one point accusing them of being ringleaders of the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9.

In a two-paragraph statement. issued to the media, inspector-general of police Ismail Omar confirmed the release of the six from detention under the Emergency Ordinance and said, "Following their release, further action will be determined by the attorney-general's chambers."

The Perfect Husband

Several men are in the locker room of a golf club.

A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands free speaker function and begins to talk.

Everyone else in the room stops to listen.

MAN: "Hello"

WOMAN: "Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?"

MAN: "Yes"

WOMAN: "I am at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only Rs.. 25,000. Is it OK if I buy it?"

MAN: "Sure, go ahead if you like it that much."

WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2007 models. I saw one I really liked."

MAN: "How much?"

WOMAN: "Rs. 55,40,000"

MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options."

WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing...the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking Rs. 1,95,00,000"

MAN: "Well, then go ahead and give them an offer of Rs. 1,50,00,000. They will probably take it. If not, we can go the extra 45 lakhs if it's really a pretty good price."

WOMAN: "OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!"

MAN: "Bye! I love you, too."

The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths agape.

He turns and asks: "Anyone know who this phone belongs to?"

Road repair in Bangsar causes annoyance

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 07:18 AM PDT

I have not blogged for a while now but I had a crazy afternoon.

After buying kon loh mee for lunch and picking up my son from school, I found that the road to our house through Lorong Bukit Pantai was blocked for tarring the road. I was ushered over to Lorong Kurau entrance and to get there, I had to go through Jalan Bangsar. Of course, being a friday lunch, the traffic was horribly slow and when I got there, the road was also blocked.

My son said let's just wait at lucky gardens in the car. And we sat there and waited, for like over 2 hours and the road was still blocked.

I think it is really annoying when the contractors appointed to do this road re-tarring do not have the courtesy to have someone wave the traffic and at least allow traffic through one side of the road. There was no notice given to warn residents about the road block. And dbkl ought to know how to deal with such a problem, instead of saying, we'll send someone there and that someone doesn't even know which street I am on. And of course, just to lodge a complaint, first I have to call the dbkl operator who then says, call another number and of course, no one will pick up that number always. So I called back the first number and told someone there no one is picking up that number. Then I was told she'll ask someone to call me and she can't give me a report number cos the computer system is down. Of course, no one calls me back and I have to call back the first number after waiting for a good hour. And I'm spoken to, like I had never called before because there was no report number. By the time someone called to verify the matter, it was 3 hours or so later and I was already home. Dbkl needs to do a better job in handling complaints. Listen, take notes and act on it, and check that it is done. I believe dbkl standard has really deteriorated over the years, from a bandaraya you can depend on, to one that appears clueless.

I think there is something wrong in which the road tarring contracts are being given out. It seems to be given to contractors who have no experience in handling the general public and the residents on how the road works will affect them, and totally insensitive to road users. I have not seen such utter disregard for the residents. Wasted a whole afternoon, sitting in my car, hungry, and running late for a meeting. Really annoying.

BERS✔H 2.0: Video Sebenar Dikeluarkan Untuk Nafikan Video Palsu Keluaran PDRM

Bersih 2.0: Peguam PKR pula tayang video nafi dakwaan polis

Hari ini, Ketua cabang Klang Yew Boon memberitahu pemberita bahawa kanister gas pemedih terkena bahagian mata sebelah kiri, sekali gus menyebabkan luka kecil.

-TMI

Tian was running away from riot police'

PKR's version of the police video is that Tian Chua was running away and the police have twisted it to say he was charging at them.

PETALING JAYA: PKR today came to the defence of its vice-president Tian Chua by saying that he was actually running away from the riot police, and not charging at them, during the July 9 Bersih rally.

Subang MP R Sivarasa explained that Tian Chua was running away from the police rather than attacking them during an incident at an underpass at KL Sentral.

"Police seem to be focusing on Tian Chua running out of the underpass, trying to suggest that he was charging at the police and therefore they fired tear gas. But the videos show that that's a complete lie," said Sivarasa.

"What Tian Chua was doing was that he was trying to get out of the space as quickly as possible. When coming out of the tunnel you can see from the video he was running to the right, out of the path of the tear gas."

Sivarasa said if Tian Chua had any intention to attack the police, he could have come directly face-to-face with the light strike force.

Sivarasa was speaking to the press at the PKR headquarters today where the party showed some video clips taken from the day of the rally, which strengthened its claim that the police acted in a brutal manner in dispersing the protesters.

Last week, the police made public their own video clips to show that they were provoked by the protesters. They also claimed that Tian Chua had charged at them.

Pointing to two video clips today, Sivarasa said these clips showed that Tian Chua had veered to the right and was immediately detained by the police together with others who followed him.

"It was a foolish statement by the police and some bloggers had repeated it. Tian Chua knew the police were going to shoot tear gas and had made a judgment call to get out of the firing line.

"The moment he moved, the shooting started and he was able to escape," said Sivarasa.

Lies and distortion

PKR vice-president N Surendran, who was also present at the press conference, said that it also does not make sense that police had continued shooting about 10 more canisters when Tian Chua and the charging group had already moved to the side.

"The police's lie and distortion was spread by others, including bloggers who accepted the lie. Our problem is not with the bloggers but the police who started this false version," he said.

Yesterday, Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Haris Ibrahim questioned Tian Chua's alleged aggressive actions during the confrontation with the police in the tunnel.

The blog post entitled, "Confirmed: Tian Chua was a bad, bad boy!" demanded an explanation from the Batu MP as to why he had led a charge of a few protesters towards the police.

Haris had also posted a clip (above) showing Tian Chua counting down from three to one and leading a charge straight at the riot police who then fired at them.

In response, Tian Chua stated in a statement yesterday that the edited video which showed him leading the demonstrators did not give the true picture of what happened at the tunnel that day.

He added "the witch-hunt whether on me or other participants cannot absolve the guilt of brutality on July 9". -FMT

Simple Pleasures

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 06:53 AM PDT

Sometimes, the simplest pleasures in life can be so darn satisfying. Today's dinner consisted of just sweet potatoes for wifey and yummy tapioca for me and they tasted absolutely delicious.

I haven't eaten tapioca for years and back when I was a wee young, ravishingly handsome (hahaha ... perasan betul!) lad, my dearly departed grandma used to make them specially for me. I was a spoilt grandma's boy so I got to eat whatever I wanted anytime and tapioca was one of them.

I could just sit there and eat the whole darned pot of boiled tapioca by myself. Depending on my mood for the day, I'd either sprinkle sugar on them or just eat them plain. I simply loved the stuff.

Today, wifey and me saw some being sold at Empire Shopping Gallery and I got a whole bag full, well more like four pieces la and insisted on her preparing it for me the moment we came home. And when she told me it was done, I was like a little boy running out to get my plate, plonked a whole piece on it, made a mug of coffee which it goes absolutely well with and was happily chomping on it.

Ahhh ... it was simply delicious and brought back sweet memories of my younger days as a spoilt brat ... LOL!

6 Tahanan Ordinan Darurat Dibebaskan - Tarikh Pilihanraya Begitu Hampir

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 07:02 AM PDT

Ura-ura tarikh pilihanraya dipercepatkan semakin bertiup kencang.

Hubaya-hubaya!

Celine Dion songs

am not a big fan of Celine Dion, especially of her English songs, but when she sings in French, she is a different person. Less screaming, and more real. I think.

Anyways, here are some songs of hers I never heard before now, with lyrics.

This next one is especially good:

Chan Lilian, I know but who is Tony Yew? You gormless so-called Christian

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 04:38 AM PDT

In his police report against Chan Lilian, Tony Yew alleged that Chan's tweet contained seditious elements, which directly incited Christians to go against the government for alleged persecution and as a citizen who also professes the Christian faith, he was of the opinion that the action of the individual behind this twitter ID had the ability to threaten the security of the nation. This was followed by a blog post titled 'Don't push it', where Yew lamented that he had seen Chan's tweet being retweeted and was disappointed that there were people out there happy to spread the word. Yew had asked in his blog, "What more if you work for a chief minister? Should we, the rest of us who want to move forward just stand by on the side and hope that the best prevail?"

I bet Tony Yew has not lodged a single police report against Ibrahim Ali who, as a Member of Parliament and an elected individual representing all Malaysians, had incited racial hatred many times!

As a concerned citizen of Malaysia, Tony should lodge a police report against Ibrahim and all the more so if he professes the Christian faith.

Isn't inciting one party against another party EVIL?!

Polis Guna Kekerasan Tanpa Ada Sebarang Provokasi

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 04:40 AM PDT

-tvsnews

Jeyakumar & gang released: They are now 'national heroes'!

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 06:42 AM PDT

BRAVO! The release of 6 PSM (Parti Sosialis Malaysia) leaders and members from detention is already making them heroes. The whole world can equate them to Nelson Mandela or Kim Dae-jung or Lech Walesa.

I think it was decided by IGP Ismail Omar himself, who yesterday said they will only be freed once the investigations were completed.

My friend Zakhir aka Big Dog says 'Its A Mistake' while PM says 'Govt Receives Release of Activist Favourably.'

And so, the Emergency Ordinance is a farce. Even the ISA - which an amendment to it has been postponed since last year - has been doomed as a rickety. Now that everybody can apply pressure on the police and 'blackmailing' the government, our law and order is at a discount.

Sungai Siput MP Dr Jeyakumar along with PSM deputy chairman M. Sarasvathy, 58, national Youth chief R. Sarat Babu, 25, Sungai Siput division secretary A.P Letchumanan, 49, and central committee members, Choo Chon Kai, 33, and M. Sukumaran 50, were arrested two weeks before the July 9 Bersih 2.0 illegal rally.

The detention under Section 3 (1) of the Emergency Ordinance allows a person to be held for up to 60 days without trial.

Ever since the arrest, Najib and Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein came under tremendous pressure from NGOs, foreign media, the Opposition and even BN leaders who sought for their immediate release.

Among most vocal was MIC President G Palanivel who told Najib that the detention has smeared Malaysia's good name abroad. There were also suggestion - or warnings - that the Indians might not vote for Barisan Nasional in the next general poll if reasons for the detention could not be substantiated.

While the Opposition leaders were fast to condemn it as an act of racism, foreign media were also shooting at it, calling the 'draconian' ISA and the EO as the government's tool to halt any efforts to challenge its political might.

I am not sure what was the reason for the 'quick' release this evening. Was it about Jeya's hunger strike or there was actually not basis for their detention at all. Or, is the government worried about the possibility of losing the Indian votes?

Their detention had nothing to do with racism. Bukit Aman wouldnt have arrested them without any reason. Detaining and releasing them within a short time is only making the six 'a reformation heroes' and I personally believe PM, Hisham and the IGP got a lot to answer.

By the way, can we haggle on the price of national security?

EO 6 - RELEASED!

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 03:33 AM PDT

Wonderful news!!! Following public outrage and sustained protests over their arbitrary detention, the EO 6 or PSM 6 they were released at 5.30pm at the Jinjang police station today. They were detained since July 2 for undefined charges during the Bersih 2.0 crackdown.

At that time, the six PSM members - Choo Chon Kai, Sarat Babu, M Sarasvathy, M Sukumaran, A Letchumanan and Sungai Siput parliamentarian Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj - were detained on suspicion of planning to wage war against the King.

Along the way, the charge was changed several times and one of the charges included allegations that they could be ringleaders of the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9.

Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar confirmed the release of the six from detention under the Emergency Ordinance in a two-paragraph media statement. He clarified that the Attorney-General will decide on the next course of action for the six of them.

According to various online news portals, PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan and their lawyer Edmund Bon also confirmed the six were released at 5.30pm.

This news is certainly most heartwarming. At the candlelight vigil last night which was held at Speakers' Square, Esplanade, Dr Prema Devaraj aired her concerns for her brother who had started his hunger strike. When Chon Kai's girlfriend gave a note of thanks to all supporters, she broke down and asked for more vigils to show solidarity and to pressure the government to release them.

I am sure concerned Malaysians are deeply relieved. However, the fact remains that the EO and the ISA must be abolished lest innocent Malaysians can be victimised through the indiscriminate use of this law. Let's continue to campaign for those repressive and Draconian laws to be abolished.

Najib PM Terakhir Dari UMNO

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 03:08 AM PDT

- A. Samad Said, Sasterawan Negara.
