Heroine from Bersih 2.0

Heroine from Bersih 2.0

Heroine from Bersih 2.0

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 09:04 AM PDT

In my opinion, this is the most haunting image to emerge from the Bersih 2.0 walk in Kuala Lumpur on 9 July 2011.

According to various postings in facebook, the lady has been identified as Annie Ooi Siew Lan. She was just one of countless aunties and uncles who participated in Bersih 2.0. But the world's eyes may be now on her just because of this iconic picture.

Originally from Kedah and Penang, this retired teacher now lives in the Setapak area and is aged 65 years old. A firm believer of the ideals of Bersih 2.0, she dressed up in yellow and took a bus ride to the city centre alone. Along the way, the Police stopped her several times to check her identification card. When questioned about her attire, her answer was always the same: "Why can't I wear yellow?"

She walked with the other supporters of Bersih 2.0. And then she was sprayed with chemical-laced water or fired upon with tear gas or both. She came unprepared for the violence; it was the furthest from her mind. All she carried with her were a water bottle and a stalk of flowers.

"It's so sad," she lamented. "It's so sad that the Police are treating our rakyat like this. When you come to rallies, there's a spirit of unity, something I cannot describe, when everyone is united for a cause. Why do we have to feel so scared in our own homeland. And by our own countrymen too?"

Yes, why indeed?

[Video] Rakaman Sambutan BERSIH 2.0 Di Seluruh Dunia

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 09:54 AM PDT

Bersih 2.0 accepts stadium offer for rally! Ambiga, Bersih hormati Agong! ;-)

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Met outside the national palace after an audience with Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara, Ambiga said the coalition "will cooperate with the government and accept their offer to have the event in a stadium".
"Therefore, the rally on the street will not take place (on Saturday)."
The movement does not yet know which stadium will be used. This will be announced at a later date.
"We are very grateful for the (audience with the Agong) and will accept the government offer," Ambiga added.
    A compromise
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had earlier proposed that Bersih holds its demonstration in a stadium rather than on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.
Asked whether the decision reflects a compromise on the part of Bersih, Ambiga said it was, given the circumstances.

She declined to comment further or respond to the barrage of questions from journalists, stressing that she needs to first discuss this with her committee.

"We will give more details in a press conference later," she said before getting back into her car.
NONEAmbiga, Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Zaid Kamaruddin and national laurate A Samad Said had arrived at the Istana Negara gates about 1.55pm.

The trio had earlier refused comment when approached.
Yesterday, Bersih 2.0 submitted a formal request for an audience during which they intend to explain the movement's position and seek the Agong's advice on the rally.

Bersih 2.0 had requested for the audience because the Agong had issued a special statement on Sunday night.
    Police: Permit still needed

The Agong had said that, while it is incumbent on the government to fulfill its responsibilities in a "just and wise manner", street demonstrations would bring more harm than good, even if the original intention is good.
In an immediate response to the meeting between the King and the Bersih 2.0 leaders, inspector general of police Ismail Omar said the police will take the movement's decision to hold the rally in a stadium under consideration.

In a faxed statement issued at 5.30pm today, Ismail said the police welcome the King's decree regarding the cancellation of the street rally, and will wait for an official application from the rally organisers as required under Section 27 of the Police Act 1967.

"Whatever decision made in future will always be based on public order and the rakyat's safety," he said.

Nik Aziz Lawat Keluarga Baharudin.. Syahid..

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 04:23 AM PDT

KL 10 Julai 11: "Tok Guru, doakan agar ayah saya mati syahid," kata Nazrul Baharudin, 23 tahun kepada Tuan Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, Mursyidul Am PAS.

Namun, cerita lain mula merebak sebaik sahaja jenazah Allahyarham dikeluarkan dari rumah mayat Hospital Kuala Lumpur jam 3 pagi tadi selepas menjalani postmortem.

(IH)

Bersih 2.0 – Favourite Photos, Video and My Thoughts

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 07:31 AM PDT

Look like a warzone, but it's them who fired it to the people. Trying to disperse, what for? Let them walk peacefully to the stadium. Then people happy, but not.

No, I wasn't there at the Bersih 2.0 rally yesterday in Kuala Lumpur, but I have to tell you that I wanted to be there so badly but physically I am in my hometown. Even though I wasn't there, my spirit was and is there always, to support a clean election and process of making a real democratic country.

It's just people, walking on the street, with no weapon. But the police force fired tear gas and water canon to them.

709, 9 July 2011, was a historical to the Malaysian citizen, it's a day to be remembered in my opinion as people of all walks of life came together, unite and walk for electoral reform. It's the government who stupidity condemned the peace rally. The keyword is peace, it's not like the Vancouver riot, it's not a riot, it's a peace rally. There's no dangerous weapon, it's just a peace walk to voice out the voice of Malaysian.

The government was being stubborn and keep saying that this Bersih 2.0 is illegal. What the hell is being illegal when people just want to walk on the street to voice out? It's a planned peace rally, just walking to voice out to the King. If it's illegal, then what's legal?

If the Election Commission, say OK with the 8 demands, then there will not be any rally and riot. It's not demand for changing the rights of the Malays also, but you all crazy people just scared of the 8 demands and uses all ways to stop the rally from going on, but you failed. Not many turned up, but still it's more than 20,000 people. 20,000 is a small number of the total population, but it represents a big part of it.

If the government friend friend with the Bersih, shake hand, give Bersih a stadium, then there wouldn't be any injury and running around the city. The traffic will be smooth and business as usual. But no, the government didn't want to give the stadium and block all the road to KL, of course this will cause massive jam outside KL and business stops! Stupid road block is the cause of the disturbance of KL folks.

And somemore, why catch people wear yellow shirt? What the hell is this? Why wearing yellow shirt is delivering a negative message? This is the super ridiculous and very gay and very pointless!

No way, DS Anwar's bodyguard will be hurt so easily by just walking. Hit by canister?

We, part of Malaysia, not whole, just want to show what we think on the street only and you shoot us like crazy with tear gas and water canon. It's you, the PDRM who was being rude, aggressive and dangerous. Malaysia is a civilized country, you think the Malaysian will fight? It's not 1963 anymore, come on it's 2011 and there's no Malay, Indian or Chinese, it's all Malaysian who took part in the rally TOGETHER!

Bersih, might have political message, SO WHAT? If the government is clean and good, then what for you are scared of the rally and preventing it to happen and stop all the top leaders from entering the city? I don't care of what the opposition is doing, but I only care about a real electoral reform for a fair and clean election. If you win it cleanly, I will keep my mouth shut for sure.

Sad for the old aunty who came to support.

Seriously, think about why people are joining the rally? People not joining the rally doesn't mean they don't care or disagree with it, why don't you think about they concern, but just afraid of being caught? OK, they might be chicken, but I am sure they have the heart for it. Look at Twitter, the updates of Bersih, just look at the attendees, and the photos, it's a true spirit of being unite together, all races, that's the most lovely part of Bersih, it's not PAS, it's not DAP, it's not BN, it's not MCA, but it's Malay + Chinese + Indian = Malaysians.

One thing I very TULAN is when A Samad Said wanted to submit the memorandum to His-Majesty King, the police stopped him. He is a very old man already, and he has no melee weapon or gun or anything, why the hell the authority, the upper level of police don't allow him to get through? OLD MAN + a few papers of memorandum, that's all, they also don't let them go through and talked so rudely. Come on, he is just an old man.

Well, I write this hopefully won't get caught (HAHAHA), I love my country, I am not fully disagree with the government, just some wrong doings of them, yet I am proud of being a Malaysian. Exercise your rights, register yourself for election at the nearest post office and voice out during the next elections. Malaysia Boleh! – 1 Malaysia!

SUHAKAM Timbang Siasat Keganasan Polis Di Perhimpunan Aman BERSIH

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 08:27 AM PDT

Apa tujuan mereka?

-tvsnews

Lebih 70 Isteri Wakil Rakyat BN Kena Keracunan Makanan

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 06:30 AM PDT

-Bernama

Sindrom Penipuan - Polis Tak Mengaku Lepaskan Tembakan Ke Hospital Tung Shin

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 05:32 AM PDT

PPerkecil perhimpunan Bersih, Najib kata Umno tak takut pilihan raya adil

"Jangan ragui kekuatan kami.

"Jangan (menyebabkan) kami memulakan demonstrasi jalanan.

Kesemua pemimpin kanan Umno termasuk timbalan presiden Umno Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin dan setiausaha agung Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor hadir.

Juster kata Najib, pentadbirannya mengamalkan demokrasi tulen.

"Umno tidak bimbang (mengadapi) pilihan raya adil," kata Najib. -TMI

    Ulasan GB

Cumanya, Allah SWT Maha Berkuasa.

Marina Mahathir Sertai Himpunan Bersih Semalam

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Don't (make us) start street demonstrations. Yesterday, we only sent our Umno Youth wing, led by Khairy Jamaluddin, to represent us

The Gentle MP of Sungei Siput

    Posted: 10 Jul 2011 01:43 AM PDT

With much sadness, I read THIS REPORT which said that PSM's Sungai Siput MP Dr D Michael Jeyakumar, presently detained without trial under the Emergency Ordinance 1969, has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) here for heartbeat abnormality.

According to the report, he is said to be in a stable condition but his family members are complaining that they are not being allowed to visit him. Only Jeyakumar's wife has been allowed to visit him so far.

On 25th of June, Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj was among 30 Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members arrested in relation to the upcoming July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally. They were then released and rearrested on July 2 under Emergency Ordinance 1969 for being a national threat.

After his first arrest,Jeyakumar was admitted to a hospital in Penang over his heart condition.

    According to The Nut Graph:

In the 1999 general election, Jeyakumar contested unsuccessfully under the DAP banner against incumbent MIC candidate Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu in a three-cornered fight that included Malaysian Democratic Party candidate Mohamad Asri Othman.

In the 2004 elections, Jeyakumar again contested unsuccessfully against Samy Vellu but under the PKR banner. Also contesting the seat then in a three-cornered fight was DAP candidate Sanmugam Ponmugam Ponnan.

Jeyakumar is a member of the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) but was elected to Parliament on the ticket of the People's Justice Party in the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition.

This is a man who has demonstrated much passion to serve the people and one who has soldiered on to realize his ambition to serve the rakyat.

Personally, I have only met MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj once at a forum on health care and was very impressed by his sincere love and desire to serve the people. Coming from a Christian family devoted to social work, it is no surprise that he is utterly devoted to humanitarian causes.

In 1972 and 1973, his mother Datin Seri Elizabeth Devaraj was my Geography teacher in MGS Penang while his sisters Sheila was my senior while Prema (Programme director at the Women's Centre for Change in Penang) was my junior. In the mid 1980's, I worked with his mom, aunt (Mrs Mary Paul) and cousin in women's issues. Datin Seri E Devaraj is such a passionate women who is so driven to improve the lot of women in our country. She has left a legacy with her immense contribution towards the Young Women Christian Association, Children Protection Society, and the Home for Single Mothers. Many in Penang are well aware of his father's fantastic contributions in hospice work. Datuk Seri T Devaraj is the CEO and Medical Director of the National cancer Society of Malaysia (Penang branch).

If ever there was a saint in Malaysia, it is Dr Michael J Devaraj - a selfless soul from a well-to-do background but who lives with so much humility.  Walking in the footsteps of his parents, MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar comes forth as a selfless man who has put others first.

Martin Vengadasan (The Star) was spot on when he wrote:

The man doesn't just talk the talk, he lives it: One of the common sights in Sungai Siput is that of Dr Jeyakumar and his wife, R. Moharani, driving around in a beat-up car doing social work on the days when he isn't busy as a medical practitioner (he specialised in internal medicine).

"I think my car is not so beat-up, but there is some truth to that. I met my wife as part of the struggle. As students in Universiti Malaya in 1977, we took part in an anak angkat (adoption) programme in Sungai Siput, and that's how we met."

Moharani is now a full-time volunteer with PSM and secretary of its Buntong branch (in Perak) as well as being a member of the party's central committee. The couple have a 15-year-old son.
I sincerely hope that God's grace and healing touch will be upon MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj and that he will recover from whatever ailment he is facing. May there be a miracle and may the authorities concerned release him and the others as soon as possible.

*I am writing as a concerned Malaysian and am not a member of Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
