Mesyuarat sulung majlis media 'gagal'

-mk

Understanding the Media Consultative Council...

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 09:52 AM PDT

Without any reps from the TV stations, the first meeting of the proposed Media Consultative Council (MCC) was attended by only a few media chiefs, a new media spokesperson who represented the bloggers, and 'tier-2' personnel from Prime Minister's Office, the Home Ministry and Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim's officers.

It was chaired by Sec-Gen of Information, Communication and Culture Ministry, Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf (pic). Uninvited reps from some news portals and 'akhbar nyamuk' were nearby. I was one of them.

It was an interesting idea and I believe it comes from Rais himself. The MCC will be put under a joint-jurisdiction - Rais and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, our Home Minister (a 'abang-adik' control).

I guess I saw a few red faces after the meeting, which was meant to get feedback about the Council prior to its official establishment. But the meeting turned sour as most of the participants, especially from the mainstream media took it as another government tool to control them.

The issue about the direction to be taken by the Council, the kind of benefit it will bring and who will be appointed to the panel, are still unclear. However, all parties should consider it and give inputs as to how its embodiment should be managed to the interest of the booming media industry (new media such as blogs and portals are also part of it).

The only MCC that I came across is the Botswana Media Consultative Council (BACC) which was established in 1998. Malaysia is years ahead of Botswana in terms of economic achievement and development but the idea only cropped up now. I wonder...

The BACC is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-governmental organisation registered in September 1998 as a trust under applicable domestic law. Its primary mission is to promote and preserve the further development of a multimedia industry in Botswana which is free, democratic, pluralistic and productive.

"In our vision, we recognise that Botswana will only realise its full economic as well as democratic potential if both its public and private sectors successfully embrace the political and social, as well as technological challenges of the rapidly evolving global information age. The BMCC was established to help secure this goal by constituting itself as an institutionalised forum for media stakeholders to enter into constructive dialogue both among themselves and with the wider community, including the government and regional organisations, on issues of common concern".

That's part of its Charter (read here).

What differs our MCC and BMCC is, ours is chaired by ministers while theirs fully comprises non-govt figures. The BMCC is chaired by a senior journalist/columnist while no govt officials sit on its panel.

Anyway, I think ours is slightly better as we will have govt and media reps on the same panel.

Good idea... but I hope we can be more specific in its objectives and benefits. I am sure its not all about taking punitive action on any media reports but a channel to discuss problems besetting our media industry.

The world’s craziest (or wackiest?! weirdest?!) basketball court is in Munich

The world's craziest basketball court is in Munich

There is a basketball court in Germany that is about to blow your mind.
We're not sure, outside of displaying one's artistic integrity, why someone would choose to make a 3D-styled basketball court featuring lumps and lamps and all sorts of weirdness, but we do appreciate the results. Because it gives us an excuse to wonder what it would be like to play basketball on a court like this:

Saintis Desak Pantau Kajian Wujudkan 'Manusia Separuh Beruk'

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 09:52 AM PDT

- Agensi

Defamation suit: Can Anwar defend himself in an 'Umno-sponsored' court?!

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 09:17 AM PDT

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein - who is suing Anwar for defamation on statements Anwar made about the sex tape allegedly depicting him, which the opposition leader has denied - today sought to strike out certain paragraphs of Anwar Ibrahim's defence in the sex video tape suit the minister had filed.

NONEHishammuddin's application was relayed to the High Court in Kuala Lumpur by the minister's lawyer, Sunil Abraham while Lawyer J Leela appeared for Anwar, who has already filed his counter-claim and Justice VT Singham fixed Aug 26 for the case management to continue.
Hishammuddin, 50, in his suit claimed Anwar's words meant he was responsible for screening the video to a group of editors and journalists at Carcosa Seri Negara hotel on March 21. The words also meant that he arranged for the screening of the video and plotted with the prime minister and the police top brass to have it done.

Just A Tap On The Shoulder

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 08:45 AM PDT

A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.

The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window.

For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the still shaking driver said,
'Are you OK? I'm so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me.'

The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said he didn't realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle the driver so badly.

The driver replied, 'No, no, I'm the one who is sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab.

I've been driving a hearse for the past 25 years.

Knee-deep in snow

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 05:40 AM PDT

There's no pleasing the New Zealanders. At the beginning of June, they said that the previous month was the warmest May that they have had for a very long time. At the beginning of this month, they said the same thing; that June was the warmest that they had experienced too.

Then they were speculating that their whole winter - from June to August - may be among the warmest on record too. Balmy weather. Travelling on the road wouldn't be a hazard because there's no snow. Yet, the ski operators were all worried stiff. No snow? Then what's going to become of their season? There won't be tourists visiting them if there is no snow. No tourists, no money.

Then the goddess of the antartic heard them. She sent a loooong breath of cold air towards them. The result: it has been snowing heavily in the South Island for more than a week already. The ski operators are happy; finally, they have real snow, not some stuff that's artificially created by their snow machines.

But what a havoc it created for the rest of the country. The whole of the South Island's snowed in and major parts of the North Island as well. The worst blizzard in 16 years, the newspapers said.

I just received an email from a friend in the South Island. He migrated there some 14 or 15 years ago. The snow in Christchurch, so he said, is about knee-deep. The schools are closed and he's been working from home. He grows lengkuas in his backyard. Or maybe I should say now, he grew lengkuas in his backyard. All died already, his email message said. Oh....

AAADD - Know The Symptoms

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 08:14 AM PDT

Thank goodness there's a name for this disorder.

Somehow I feel better, even though I have it!!

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests itself:

I decide to water my garden.

As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I head towards the garage, I notice post on the porch table that I picked up from the postman earlier.

I decide to go through it before I wash the car.

I put my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the recycling box under the table, and notice that the recycling box is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the recycling first.

But then I think, since I'm going to be near the postbox when I take out the recycling paper anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my cheque book off the table and notice that there is only one cheque left.

My extra cheques are in the desk in my study, so I go into the house to my desk where I find the cup of coffee I'd been drinking.

I'm going to look for my cheques but first I need to push the coffee aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

The coffee is getting cold, and I decide to make another cup..

As I head toward the kitchen with the cold coffee, a vase of flowers on the worktop catches my eye - the flowers need water.

I put the coffee on the worktop and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers..

I put the glasses back down on the worktop, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote control. Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realise that tonight when we go to watch TV,I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I put the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:

The car isn't washed

The bills aren't paid

There is a cold cup of coffee sitting on the kitchen work-surface

The flowers don't have enough water,

There is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book,

I can't find the remote,

I can't find my glasses,

And I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all bloody day and I'm really tired.

I realise this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.....

Do me a favour. Forward this message to everyone you know, Because I can't remember who the hell I've sent it to.

Don't laugh - if this isn't you yet, your day is coming!!

Back together again…

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 08:07 AM PDT

I spent my Sunday morning & afternoon having a good time caving with friends at Gua Tempurung – a short break from my voluntary work… a stress releasing activity before I start off with my Ramadhan visits next week. My clients wouldn't have been able to reach me even if they wanted to… for almost 4 hours inside the cave, there was no reception!! :-)

But it didn't take long after the expedition ended for one of my clients to call me. I had not even gone out of Gopeng yet when a call came in while I was driving. The ring tone indicated the number was not listed in my mobile phone.

It was Zalia. Remember Zalia? The young mother who sought my help to get assistance for her 2 year old daughter. My problem was, the daughter was staying with Zalia's mother while Zalia herself, due to a misunderstanding with her mother, had moved out of the house to stay with her mak angkat, who also happens to be her boyfriend's mother. Of course, Zalia's mother got pretty upset with the decision made by Zalia.

After about a month or so, now Zalia wants to go back and stay with her parents, and be reunited with her daughter. But she was scared. Earlier on, the plan was that when I manage to get donations of milk for her little girl, I'd bring Zalia together with me to her parents house to pass the milk to them.

I did manage to get help for the girl, but my calls to Zalia went unanswered and my text messages never got replied. For a while I thought Zalia had abandoned the idea of going to see her parents and her daughter.

But finally just after my Gua Tempurung grand tour, she called, using her boyfriend's phone. Not really a good time to call, but since I had been wanting to get hold of her, I entertained the call. Apparently her own phone became faulty and was beyond repairs. Which was why my calls and messages never got through to her.

Zalia said she needed to move out of her mak angkat's house as soon as possible and asked if she could meet up with me. She didn't have single sen to go to town to meet me and so she was hoping I could come pick her up at home. Not really a problem since she's staying in Ipoh, but I didn't have her house address and wasn't in a position to write down the address to ask her on the phone. So I told her to text me the address and I'd try to visit her the next day (ie today).

By the time I got home, I noticed that she had already texted me the address – not familiar territory to me although it's in Ipoh. But I got my GPS and yes, the road where she stayed was listed in my GPS.

So today I headed off to fetch Zalia. I didn't tell her earlier what time I'd be coming. She did mention she wasn't going anywhere so it shouldn't matter what time. But as I was nearing the house, Zalia called and asked if I was coming. When I told her I was already on my way, she said, "Oh, kalau macam tu saya siaplah barang-barang saya."

Huh? Siap barang? Was I supposed to send her home today?

"Dah ada telefon bagitau mak belum?" I asked.

"Dia tak jawab telefon. Dah berapa kali dah saya call."

Uh oh! I thought I was going to see Zalia to discuss things over. But never mind, Zalia's mother was probably just too upset with the decision Zalia made to move out of the house and leaving her own child; she purposely didn't want to answer the call. Besides, since Zalia couldn't use her own phone, she used her boyfriend's phone to call. Her mother probably already recognised the number.

Anyway, when I got to the house as per the address mentioned by Zalia, a young lady opened the door and asked who I was looking for. When I mentioned Zalia's full name, the lady went blank, and then asked another lady in the house. They only knew her nickname, not her full name. I then heard a guy's voice, asking the young lady who I was. When I mentioned my name, then only the guy told them to tell me to wait for a while. Zalia was upstairs packing her things. So I went back to wait in the car since they didn't invite me in.

After a while Zalia came out with her bags. Not many things since she just moved out of her parent's house just about a month ago. I think it hadn't even been 5 minutes after we left when my handphone rang. The call came from her boyfriend, who was in the house when we left earlier. He asked to speak to Zalia for a while. I had my bluetooth on so I could answer my calls hands free while driving, so I had to turn off my bluetooth before passing the phone to Zalia. Based on the conversation I heard, all he wanted to say was to tell Zalia to take good care of herself bla bla bla. Duh! Couldn't they settle that part at home when I went to fetch her?

All the way to her parent's house, I was praying and praying that Zalia's mother would soften up and accept Zalia back without much drama. Well, I think since she wasn't really expecting Zalia to go home, what more with someone she (Zalia's mom) never knew or even heard of before, she seemed rather surprised when she saw me with Zalia. It could have been a different scene altogether had it been Zalia's boyfriend who sent her home.

After Zalia went to kiss her mother's hands, the 41 year old mother and grandma to Zalia's daughter looked at me as I offered my salam. I immediately introduced myself as a volunteer dealing with HIV patients. Zalia had told me earlier that her family had known of her HIV status all along, and so I didn't have to worry about telling them who I really was.

Zalia's mother seemed rather receptive. What I felt earlier was right, when she didn't answer Zalia's calls, it wasn't because she didn't want to accept Zalia in her life. It's just that she felt too hurt with the decision made by Zalia. I had earlier on in the car, told Zalia to make sure she apologised to her mother, to which she responded, "Memang saya yang salah pun kak."

So there wasn't really any unwanted scenes when I sent Zalia back to her family today. I was however hoping that Zalia's mother wasn't just controlling herself because I was there. Zalia's 2 year old daughter, at first seemed shy and kept hiding behind chairs, but after about 10 minutes or so, she clung on to Zalia and looked as though she didn't want to let go. The poor girl must have missed her mother so much.

Seeing that everything seemed fine, I asked to leave. As I drove off, I looked into the rear mirror to see if the situation would change, but based on what I saw, they were chatting… peacefully. Let's hope it will continue that way and let's hope Zalia will not make any other stupid decisions.

Kenyataan Media: MACC

Kenyataan Media
25 Julai 2011

MEDIA STATEMENT
25 July 2011

While I welcome the launch of Executive Transformation Committee (ETC) by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), I am deeply concerned that this effort shall amount to nothing more than a public relations whitewashing project without the strong political will to effect true and necessary reforms within MACC.

To prove that MACC is serious and committed to reforms, all the recommendations made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the death of Teoh Beng Hock must be implemented publicly, with clear milestones that can be instantly recognized by the Malaysian public. Failure to do so is tantamount to the failure of MACC.

Furthermore, MACC must prosecute the three individuals pointed out in the Teoh Beng Hock RCI report – Hishammuddin Hisham, Arman Alies, and Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus – and offer a full and unconditional apology to the family of Teoh Beng Hock.

I hereby call upon MACC to commit to these points as a sign that they have accepted responsibility for the death of Teoh Beng Hock and are firmly committed to real and effective change.

UMNO BN Jangan Anggap Rakyat Bodoh!

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 08:07 AM PDT

Biometrik: Pakatan Rakyat Tetap Tolak, MAFREL Turut Pertikai Penggunaannya

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 06:43 AM PDT

-tvsnews

Mafrel: Isunya bukan biometrik tapi SPR perlu hapus pengundi hantu

Justeru kata Syed Ibrahim, amat wajar SPR mengkaji semula keberkesanan sistem biometrik sebelum dilaksanakan.

katanya.

Tegas beliau, sekiranya SPR tetap mahu melaksanakan sistem biometrik maka agensi itu perlu memberikan penjelasan kepada semua pihak terutamanya parti-parti politik.

"SPR perlu beri penerangan, macam mana proses, cara beroperasi, apa tindakan pencegahan penipuan, apa keberkesanannya.

Laporan media memetik Timbalan Pengerusi SPR Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar berkata, pihaknya masih melakukan kajian secara terperinci mengenai sistem biometrik.

-TMI

Aktiviti Sekitar DUN Seri Setia Jun 2011

061103

Good or bad, Medical Profession IS essential for the wellbeing of all the creatures

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 04:56 AM PDT

Good or bad, Medical Profession IS essential for the wellbeing of all the creatures: Human & animals.

Like the water, government, fire, ammunition, electricity, nuclear energy,
winds and females (for men and males for women) whether it is good or bad, the result depends on the SKILL of the person use, luck, fate or others.

There is nothing in the world which is absolutely good or bad. Even the
knowledge, wisdom, nationalism, patriotism or religions are misused by some. But we could not abandon them. Wisdom and avoiding extremism may be good enough.

Above is the comment I wrote in the following FB posting:

Bekas Pemimpin UMNO Tolak Najib, Ku Li Gesa Bersihkan Negara

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 05:12 AM PDT

-HD

Ku Li : Bersihkan Negara Sebelum Terlambat

-tvsnews

Jeff Ooi: You have blood on your hands, Putrajaya. Hell is waiting for you! ;)

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 04:00 AM PDT

A candlelight vigil to commemorate the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock in Penang last night turned into a royal commission of inquiry (RCI)-bashing session with Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi storming, "You have blood on your hands, Putrajaya. Hell is waiting for you!"

Ooi added that he could continue swearing but would prefer to fight this battle according to the law.

NONEHeld at the speakers square at the Esplanade, the party's stalwarts spewed much venom on the recently released RCI report which declared that Teoh, under interrogation over allegations of corruption, had committed suicide in 2009.

Ooi (left in photo) went as far as saying that Teoh's "murderers" are still on the loose and that party members have much anger to express over the matter but chose to remain civilised about it and laid the blame squarely on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's administration, saying that it is during his tenure that several tragedies like Teoh's death have occurred, referring to another death at another Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) premises involving customs officer Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamad, who was arrested as part of a nationwide crackdown against errant customs officers allegedly guilty of receiving bribes.

A State of Delirium

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 03:09 AM PDT

It is quite difficult for me to descend from cloud nine. :-) *grins widely* I was catching forty winks this afternoon after clearing the house when I was awakened by the ring tone of a text message.

"Excuse me boss, you've got a message" in the usual official sounding voice.

Lazily, I reached out for my handphone and read the message.

Screams followed and my younger boy ran to my room.

"What happened, mom?" he asked excitedly.

With a smile on my face, I read out the text message from his piano teacher, Catherine (who also taught my older boy till he finished his grade 8):

"Nick had 134. Distinction. Pls say congrats 4 me.:-)"

More screams followed - this time from both of us. :-)

Last month, my younger son took his Grade 8 ABRSM piano exam and we never expected him to get a distinction because in his nervousness, he fumbled in one bar. He scored distinctions from Grade 2 to Grade 6 (he skipped Grade 1) and scored a merit for his Grade 7.

His confidence was dented when he missed his distinction for the Grade 7 exam.

When I shared this in my FB wall, a flurry of congratulatory messages followed. Truly, I am in blissful contentment - a state of delirium to be exact. :-)

At 12 yrs and 8 mths, this is a great accomplishment for him and the glory belongs to God, Nick, his fantastic teacher, his dad (who paid the fees haha) and yours truly who faithfully chauffeured him to his classes.

The euphoria must not be allowed to carry on for he will be taking his Grade 8 ABRSM violin exam on 17th August.

Tomorrow, he is the guest artiste at one inter-school event. And he is busy practising.

As for my older boy, the band that he belongs to, Juanophobia, has qualified for the semi-finals of the Passport to Fame Battle of the Bands.

Details are as follows:

Saturday, August 6 at 9:00pm - August 7 at 12:00am

There will be 5 bands performing on that night:-

If you are in the vicinity, please support JUANOPHOBIA!!!!
Come and enjoy with us and let's ROCK it with all the bands!

CLICK HERE TO WATCH a clip of their performance in the latest round.

This is their first single (original composition) to be released soon: TAKE THE WORLD

The following are two of my favorite clips of their performances:

SWAY performed at 798 Wine Bar, Tropicana City Mall, Battle of the Bands 2011: Passport to Fame, Round 3, Saturday, July 2nd.

LEAN ON ME performed at 798 Wine Bar, Tropicana City Mall, Battle of the Bands 2011: Passport to Fame, Round 3, Saturday, July 2nd.

Er..I have to be fair. Since I praised Nick, I also have to praise Jon :-).

Incidentally, Jon (my older boy) just started blogging recently. Do visit his blog called ENIGMATIC and read about his waxing experience!

Frankly, my secret ambition was to be a musician/singer and then a writer. :-) I had wanted my older boy to be either a lawyer or an accountant but he told me, "Mom, please don't let me chase your dream. Let me chase my own dreams." With that, we gave him our blessings and he is doing just that.

My sons, I LOVE YOU BOTH - EQUALLY.

Take care! Do leave a comment to share your thoughts and please swing by again later for the next post. Thanks. Have a lovely evening.
