'Tis Only Just The Beginning!

'Tis Only Just The Beginning!

'Tis Only Just The Beginning!

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 11:14 AM PDT

As I drove to Caring Society Complex, a light drizzle began - almost as if the heavens were silently weeping for the six civilians, Choo Chon Kai, Sarat Babu, Sarasvathy Muthu, Sukumaran A/L Munisamy, A. Letchumanan, and Dr. Jeyakumar Devaraj (MP for Sungei Siput) who were arrested under the Emergency Ordinance on July 2nd. It has been 27 tormentous days and nights not just for them, but also for their loved ones and loyal supporters.

By the time I arrived, the darkness of the night was reminiscent of the solitary confinement cells. Did they know night from day? Or how long they had been there? Deep within, I knew that this candlelight vigil and forum "BERSIH 2.0 Crack-Down: "EO Another ISA" Forum"* would be different from the rest because of the impact of the BERSIH 2.0 rally.

Shortly after 8p.m. the crowd from the function room gathered under the porch, lit their candles and made their way silently and solemnly to the gate. Wordlessly and without any leader, we gathered there. With hands held high, the flickering flames of our candles refused to be snuffed out by the gentle breeze or the falling raindrops symbolizing the cry in our hearts for their release and for electoral reform in our nation.

Led by Seok Hwa of Suaram, cries of "Hidup Rakyat" and "Bebaskan EO6" filled the night as the crowd grew in size. A few members from the crowd stepped forward to speak up for those in detention and also about the issue at hand - the repressive legislation enforced when there is absolutely no emergency situation.

After the vigil came to an end, the crowd walked back to the function room animatedly, spirits revived and hearts entwined. Filled to the brim, some had to stand at the back and others in the corridors in a feverish fervour for truth and details about the background and facts of the six civilians and events related to Bersih 2.0.

Nora Murad, Executive Director of Amnesty International Malaysia (AIM) introduced the first speak of the evening, Dato' Dr Toh Kin Woon, a civil society activist and Bersih 2.0 Steering Committee Member. In his trademark crisp and articulate voice with a faint British accent, Dato' Dr. Toh stated firmly that whilst the events leading to the arrest of the EO6 and Bersih 2.0 rally brought out the worst of the elite in the government and institutions, it also showed up the best of the rakyat .

He emphasized that all BERSIH 2.0 wants is fair elections. People are frustrated that despite a barrage of calls for electoral reforms, these have largely been unheeded. The time has come for the rakyat to galvanize support for a clean and just electoral system. Until and unless we have this outcome, we will not have a full-functioning democracy and there can be no chance of a full-blown two-party coalition in this country.

The moment the announcement of the Bersih Rally was made, the worst of the state was displayed. Steering Committee 2.0 Chairman Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan was demonized, scolded and condemned by the mass media friendly to the ruling elite - mobilized for purposes of attempting to victimize the people involved, in particular - the PSM.

Dato' Dr. Toh reminded the audience that no weapons were found during the arrest and yet EO6 were accused of wagging war against the King and for propagating communism even on though July 31, 1960, the Malayan Government had declared the end of the State of Emergency. And this is also in spite of the fact that our country has close ties with China.

Consequently, what we have seen would be the worst features of the state as seen in how chemical-laced water was fired at the crowd. Undeniably, the State and the institutions have certainly degenerated to a very worrisome state till people have lost confidence in the police, the judiciary whose professionalism and political partisanship are being questioned.

Had the authorities given their approval from the onset, the walk would have been a non-event. Had our PM reacted by saying that he also wants clean and fair elections and sat down and talked with the BERSIH 2.0 Steering Committee, things would have turned out differently. Had the Coalition received the permit to hold the rally at Stadium Merdeka, the international media would not have had a field day reporting on it negatively. The reaction from the authorities has been nothing short of combative arrogance in the use of force and power to crush dissent. Had they not been so threatening, the crowd might not have been so big to want reason and rationality from the leaders to talk sense to the people.

He went on to explain that the PSM was targeted simply because they have been taking a very consistent stand against the government on many issues including GST, elimination of poverty, social equality etc. It was a simple decision to nip the problem in the bud lest cronies be threatened so they had to be belligerent in their stand and treatment of the group.

July 9th brought out the best in Malaysians and the best in Malaysia because thousands overcame the fear factor despite fears being generated and yet, they came and they dared to defy, to be brave enough to unite, to stand up to fight an oppressive government.

From this experience, it is clear that civil society has an important role in engendering change and progress in our country.  BERSIH 2.0 has shown us how a multi-front coalition of 60+ legally registered NGOs can draw the attention of authorities to be a force to be reckoned. For sure, civil society can help create more democratic space for public dissent.

Dato' Dr. Toh emphasized that many may not realize that BERSIH 2.0 was actually led by two women with outstanding leadership qualities - Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan - a charismatic, articulate and courageous leader and Maria Chin Abdullah - a dedicated and passionate woman who also lobbies for gender equality. Both of them are assisted by an almost exclusively all-woman team whose members are hardworking, strong and trustworthy even in the face of the raid. They remained true to the cause even when hauled to the police station. Such is the depth and quality of leadership and stewardship of civil society in our political landscape today.

Dato' Dr. Toh reminded us not to delude ourselves with any victory for the battle has just begun. As long as the EO6 are not released, the battle for their release MUST continue.

To be continued....The next part will focus on Dr Prema Devaraj's presentation on the EO6 members, what happened in the events following the arrest and also startling revelations by the lady lawyers handling the case. Do swing by again tomorrow. It is 2.13 am and time to say good night.

*The forum was organized by SUARAM Penang, Gerakan Mansuh ISA (GMI Penang), Amnesty International, PEWAJU, ALIRAN, DEMA, Sembang-Sembang Forum, People's Green Coalition, and Coalition for Good Governance Penang.

Najib PM Tidak Bermaruah, Peralatkan Pelatih PLKN Untuk Sambut Kedatangannya

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:30 AM PDT

3.Membentuk perwatakan positif menerusi nilai-nilai murni.
4.Menyemarakkan semangat kesukarelaan.

Agakan GB sahaja.

Buka Kamus Kalau Tak Faham "Demonstrasi" - Saifuddin Abdullah

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:03 AM PDT

Timbalan Menteri Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah berkata, rakyat perlu diberikan kefahaman tentang demokrasi, termasuk hak berhimpun sepertimana dilakukan Bersih, 9 Julai lalu.

-KD

SPR hadapi krisis kepercayaan: Saifuddin

"Usaha SPR perlu dipertingkatkan.

-SH

Subramaniam speaks out

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 07:33 AM PDT

Finally, I read here that the Human Resource Minister, Dr S Subramaniam, has broken his silence on the detention of Sungai Siput Member of Parliament Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj and five others. It is, of course, unclear whether he was speaking on behalf of his political party or in his personal capacity.

Nevertheless, he is quoted as having urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Home Ministry to review their detention under the Emergency Ordinance (EO) and to charge them in court "as quickly as possible" if they had indeed committed chargeable offences. "The IGP and Home Ministry should review the continual arrest of Dr Jeyakumar and five others under the Emergency Ordinance. To date the police have not shown any convincing evidence that they were involved in an armed struggle to overthrow the government. There are also confusing signals that they were arrested because of their involvement in Bersih. They were, however, arrested much earlier than the Bersih event. Moreover many others involved in Bersih have not been arrested and those arrested have been released."

I am glad that Subra has spoken out, although his statement was couched in very careful language. Both he and Michael may be on opposite sides of the political divide but in some ways they are similar. Both are medical doctors and, more importantly, there is the old school tie that binds them. Michael was junior to Subra at the Penang Free School by one year.

Apabila Majlis Perundingan Media Tiada Sambutan, Rais Pun Berdalih Kata Ia Hanya Cadangan

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 07:57 AM PDT

Majlis Perundingan Media hanya cadangan, kata Rais

"Kami mahukan kerjasama, tiada agenda lain," kata beliau.

-TMI

Sana jangan, sini pun jangan…

For 2 days in a row I was on clinic duty… yesterday in Taiping, and today in Ipoh. No new cases were referred to me in Taiping. But my time in Taiping Hospital wasn't wasted. I did get to meet 2 old clients. And when it was almost noon, the nurse came over. Initially I thought she wanted to refer a new case. To my surprise, she said, "Afizah, meh join sama, makan dengan Dr Ker!"

The nurses there organised a pre-Ramadhan makan-makan and they so happened to do it on a day when I was there, so lucky me got to eat the delicacies offered – nasi hujan panas, pulut kuning and meehoon soup. *Burp*

This morning I was at the hospital again for my once a fortnight duty at Ipoh GH. No longer bothered to get a parking space within the hospital compounds, I straight away went to park at my usual far away parking spot where most of the time nobody else going to the hospital wanted to park. Exercise! Exercise! I needed (and still do need) the exercise!

As I entered the doctor's room to notify the nurses that I was already there, the moment SN saw me, she immediately told the other nurse to get Faridah to see me, although it wasn't a new case and Faridah had been referred to me before. I did visit Faridah and her husband Jeff at the home of Jeff's mother before, but that was the only time. After that Jeff wasn't bothered to go for his appointments anymore. He was only interested to get financial assistance but since they didn't have any children, I couldn't offer them our Children Education Fund or help to apply for the Paediatric Aids Fund.

Anyway, this morning before they sent Faridah to see me, the nurses told me that Jeff, Faridah's husband had passed away recently. And since Faridah had defaulted her appointment late last year, this was the first time she came back to the HIV clinic for follow-up.

Ever since Faridah married Jeff and followed Jeff to stay with Jeff's side of the family, Faridah had sort of lost touch with her side of her family. It was only when Jeff died recently, they were told about it and went to visit during the funeral. Nobody had known that Jeff and Faridah were HIV +ve. However, during the funeral, the obvious presence of the Inspektor Kesihatan didn't help to keep it a secret anymore. The whole family found out. The whole kampong found out.

Now the problem is this… while Jeff's family don't mind Faridah to continue staying with Jeff's mother, Faridah's own family felt it wasn't right, and furthermore, they felt that Jeff's family wanted her there so she could take care of their ailing mother. Faridah's family thought since Faridah herself wasn't well, it was not right to let her take care of her mother-in-law.

Well then, just take her home right?

Wrong! While they felt it wasn't right for Faridah to continue staying with her mother-in-law, they felt Faridah shouldn't be staying at her own mother's house either. The sister-in-law (wife to Faridah's brother) who accompanied Faridah to the hospital today, stays with Faridah's mother. She told me that not only is the house small, she also has to take care of her ailing MIL (Faridah's mom) and so taking care of Faridah as well wasn't too practical.

Faridah, by the looks of it, cannot be independent. Not because she's too weak or anything like that, but because she is somewhat rather "slow". Anything that needs to be done, she needs to be told, each time. That's why when her husband decided to no longer go for hospital appointments, she did the same. To go to the hospital on her own, she wouldn't be able to. Probably because she had always been dependent on other people for everything.

Hmmm… they didn't agree to Faridah staying with her MIL, and they didn't agree to Faridah staying with her own mother either. So, where is she supposed to go?

That was why they wanted to see me today. They were hoping I could get her a shelter home.

Whatever it is, both sides of the family agreed that even if Faridah moves out, it should be after her iddah is over. And since her husband just died about 10 days ago, I still have 4 months to think of a suitable solution…

Nik Aziz Nafi Sokong Biometrik SPR

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 06:37 AM PDT

--Bernama

Nik Aziz sokong PAS tolak biometrik

-HD

I wish to share with my readers an email that I received from a reader concerning an article I posted on Saturday, July 23, 2011 relating to the MAF Joint Force Headquarters. There are some useful comments made that I hope should be read and understood by the current crop of military commanders; least they are not confused with the conventional understanding of Joint Force Headquarters. The last paragraph of the reader's comment is worth pondering.

Dear Dato,

It is interesting to read your argument on the need of a Joint Force HQ in the MAF.I hope your posting this time would generate more professional discussion among your readers in particular the current breed of Commanders at all levels in the MAF who are more exposed to new technologies in the management of their units, formations and forces,

India who experience 3 wars and several conflicts with its neighbors surprisingly do not have an Armed Forces HQ like we do.The joint force ops is handled by the Joint Chiefs Committee at national level and executed by a ground formation with all the organic and assigned troops. The most senior Chief of Service act as the Chairman of Joint Chiefs Committee. This Committee decides what assets and quantum of force to be assigned depending on the intelligence and Ground Commander's appreciation made available to them.

Nevertheless India has one Unified Command HQ in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands commanded by a 3 Star Admiral. This is required because these islands are too far flung in the Indian Ocean and they have to be self- reliant to operate independently at least for a limited period.

The need for a Joint Force HQ actually depends on Defence Policy, Strategy and the make- up of a particular country. Since Malaysia has 2 theaters so to speak perhaps it is prudent to have a Joint Force HQ established there to take charge of the East Malaysia Theater. Joint Force HQ should be able to operate independently, but it is a very expensive business to have one.

Joint Force HQ as I understand is also for projection of power, for offensive purposes. This I am sure do not conform to our Defence Policy or Strategy.Joint Force HQ always operate in high intensity operations and it must be trained to operate in that environment. For our Joint Force HQ to operate OP PASIR which is low intensity ops is a waste of assets and training value.Perhaps it is wise to hand back OP PASIR to 5 Bde or PDRM. After all it is still 5 Bde that has to provide admin and logistics support to OP PASIR, I am told there was no complaint against 5 Bde when they operated OP PASIR then.I just wonder why Joint Force HQ must take over now. Moreover, 5 Bde Commander is still a member of Sabah State Security Executive Committee.

Of course MAF must continue pursuing the concept of 'Jointness' even without a Joint Force HQ. It may be through existing Formation HQ or equivalent operational level where troops and assets are assigned for a specific period for training purposes or for real combat if the need arise.

It is easier said than done. It needs a political will to undo and restructure back the ATM. Australia is a country that has gone through this kind of trial and error. They revert to the Brigade concept when Task Force which replaced all Brigades did not work as well as its former structure.

JPP need to revisit the wisdom to have JFH in the MAF. Perhaps enough money could be saved to upgrade the existing utilities and facilities in the Op Pasir area for the troops deployed there.

Salam hormat

Polis Buat Laporan Polis Untuk Tangkap 10 Pemakai Baju Kuning

How to have a better working relation - By Walla

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 04:12 AM PDT

It has been said that to go higher, the employee must show and deliver three things:

1. good in work in present post;
2. initiative while working in present post; and
3. the qualities required of the higher post in view.

For instance, (1) may mean precision in delivery...maximum output to quality required in minimum time and resources used, and once that is achieved for one task, to multitask more and more at the same performance level.

(2) may mean to think beyond silos of the present post for the good of the team and upwards for the good of the company which includes the well-being of the customer, and then for each case, pro-act with suggestions or actions that can improve tasks, not necessarily one's own, or save costs, or protect the interests of the company but without creating other issues.

(3) is actually proving to the boss that the employee already has the qualities to go into the next higher post but this must not be done pushily otherwise zealousy may arise, and the ease at which it can be done calls for each employee to plan in advance his.her own career aspirations which in turn call for personal motivation which in turn calls for internal rhythm alloyed to character sharpened by the desire to do things well.

A good employee would want to have a better working relationship with the boss. A good boss would want to have a better working relationship with all employees. Employees are not necessarily challenges all the time. Some are just wayward; others need extra coaching; all have inner individual potential. Like people.

A good boss works magic - s.he can smoothen things seamlessly but at the same time raise the bar, an action which tends to create kinks. Like mistakes, kinks have their own roles to play in the progress of enterprise for they enable learning how to avoid future mistakes while opening channels for fresh ideas on how to improve things.

BERS✔H: Biometrik Bukan Penyelesaian Untuk Undi Bertindih

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 03:53 AM PDT

Ust Zamri Di BERS✔H, TV9 Hentikan Program "Adik & Al-Quran"

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 02:22 AM PDT

Adik & Al-Quran dihentikan siaran

Terima apa saja keputusan Ustaz Zamri

TV9 bakal bankrap, apabila setiap peserta himpunan Bersih memboikot siaran TV berkenaan.

Kes Sarbani: PKR Gesa Tubuh Suruhanjaya Elak Pesalah Terlepas

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 11:33 PM PDT

Seperti kata pepatah Inggeris, who will guard the guards? Sejauh mana kewibawaan siasatnya,"kata beliau lagi.

-tvsnews

Not Now!

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 10:50 PM PDT

We're in the midst of planning to go online with out business and I've been checking out web hosting companies all day in the office though I'm not feeling too well. I'm coming down with the sniffles and my throat feels a little raw. That's really not a good sign, especially with this weekend being the Shape Men's Health Night run in Putrajaya. I've been looking forward to this race since last year.

This race holds special meaning for wifey since it was the race that started her passion for running. She took part in the 5K fun run last year, which was her first ever road race and this year, she's upped the ante and is taking part in the 12K category along with me. No more 5K fun runs for that girl these days :D She's running further and further now and already has her mind set on doing a full marathon one day!

No matter what, I intend to be there this weekend to join her for the 12K though this bloody sniffles is not helping. I contracted this from the elder boy who for some reason only known to himself, decided to walk home from school in the rain last Friday and was down with the flu since then. Both wifey and me are perplexed as to why didn't he at least put on his raincoat which was in his bag. He probably thought it was uncool to put it on and took the walking in the rain option. Oh well, you know kids.

I've been pumping myself with tablets to try and combat this thing and have bundled myself up with my jacket in the office. It's never easy trying to run with the flu. You just suffer like crazy all through the run. I know how it feels cos I ran with the flu (and cough) during the Nike City 10K run last year and that 10K seemed like a 100K of torture! I was just glad to finish the run without passing out.

The weather doesn't help right now, what with it raining outside and making the entire office seem like the artic, especially when you're sick. I even have the air conditioning switched off in my room and though bundled in my jacket, I'm still cold ... siggghhh ... on any other day, I would rejoice for weather like this which is simply beautiful for running.

With that said and done, it's back to looking for some hosting guides to look at some of the best web hosting awards before deciding on which one is good for us. Maybe a nice hot, steaming mug of coffee will help with this sniffles and leaky nose. Then again, coffee always works wonders for me :D
