Agora Gallery Reviews How To Be Accepted Into A Gallery

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 09:28 AM PDT

Agora Gallery reviews the best way to get accepted by a gallery

Even in the age of the internet, when artists can display and promote their works in a huge number of ways, the role of bricks-and-mortar galleries like Agora Gallery is still an important one. It helps artists to achieve a level of legitimacy and a sense of being established in the art world that can be beneficial both to their self-confidence and to their career.

Therefore, the process which artists go through to get their work shown in a gallery is worth thinking over. There are some artists in the world who are so famous that almost any gallery would be happy to show their work, but there are very few of them. Most professional artists have to present themselves to prospective galleries such as Agora Gallery carefully. Often, this will be the first time they have heard of you or seen your work, so the impression they get matters.

Agora Gallery offers advice on portfolio submission

Research is a vital factor in getting that first impression right. It's easy to find out about most galleries you're interested in applying to — visit their websites, read their promotional material, speak to anyone you know who has a connection with them. Work out if your work might be suitable for them. If it's obviously not a good match — if they only show oils and you work in watercolour, for example — then don't apply. Many galleries, including Agora Gallery, work in a range of mediums and styles, but it's worth checking in advance.

Similarly, if you work in a number of media, sit down to decide which is best to show the gallery. If you think two or more would be suitable, try one first. If it's not successful, you can send in the others. Don't confuse the submission by trying to present all your kinds of works. Angela Di Bello, the director of Agora Gallery, reviews many portfolios and she finds she gets the strongest impression of an artist's style and approach when they have submitted a consistent body of work.

If you have a contact at the gallery — one of the assistants there, perhaps, or an artist who has shown there in the past – it's worth trying to get in contact through them. While your work will ultimately have to stand on its own merits, an initial personal touch like that can make a difference.

Remember that a gallery is a business. If you already have a reliable customer base, they will be interested in hearing about that. If you have made sales all over the world and are held in international collections, or have won a prestigious award, that is relevant information. Don't be modest at the wrong time; it's important to share this sort of detail.

Sometimes a gallery owner or director might approach you at an art fair or some similar event and express interest in your work. If this happens, make sure to react in a friendly and approachable way, and to get the contact details of the person who's talking to you. Follow up soon after the first meeting while the details are still clear in their mind.

submit your evidence of police brutality…

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 09:44 AM PDT

… fast… before 3 aug.

that's right, bersih 2.0 is collecting evidence of police brutality during the rally held on 9 july. these evidence will be submitted to the human rights commission (SUHAKAM) and suhakam will hold a public inquiry.

well the police had already made public their own evidence, compiled from their own investigation, so now it is time for those who were right there, those who saw with their eyes or who themselves experienced police brutality to submit the evidence.  read the details below, after this post.

i'm sure many of you must have seen on TV the video release of the bersih rally by the police. of course, they only show their own version… what about the participants' version? no chance of getting on the tv stations since the tv stations are all controlled by the federal government.  (yeah the police is on the fed govt side, you already know that, don't you?).

so the police version of bersih 2.0 rally was aired all over the tv stations… and many people, at least the older generation or those in kampung, owns TV,  and are not online. so what does this means? this means the police propaganda will spread to them and sadly, they will believe the police.  so we do need suhakam to come in… to made public the inquiry (not like how the police themselves investigate themselves. sound so silly!)… and hopefully the result will be aired on TV/radio stations (keeping my fingers crossed though).

i wonder how many of you had read the account from two bernama journalists who were at the rally?  ok lah, if you have not, i will CnP here for you to read.  their account sounds so… un-natural. they keep on hinting two facts – the police did not use any force and the protesters were provoking the police.  what does that sounds like? propaganda again… for the police and the fed govt!! read it for yourself and see.

ok, to all those who had attended the bersih 2.0 rally, please remember to submit evidence, especially i hope to see lots of evidence of the police firing water canon and tear gas into the tung shin hospital.  long time ago, though, tenaganita had already started to request for these evidence. hope they did managed to get lots.

ok here is the statement from bersih on its webpage:

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) has announced that they will be holding a public inquiry into allegations of, amongst others, excessive use of force during the Perhimpunan BERSIH 2.0 on 9 July 2011.

BERSIH 2.0 and SUARAM are collecting cases and evidence of excessive use of force by the police from participants of Perhimpunan BERSIH 2.0 for the SUHAKAM public inquiry. It is important that people share their experiences so that the injustice and abuse of power is exposed and those responsible are held accountable.

The following are the cases and evidence we are collecting (bahasa version also available)

———-

1. Cases of police brutality

BERSIH 2.0 and SUARAM call on all participants of Perhimpunan BERSIH 2.0 to provide information to us if you have experienced the following treatment by the police on 9 July:

a) Physical abuse (e.g. beating, kicking, slapping, hit using baton or others)
b) Verbal abuse
c) Arrest and detention

Victims of police abuse can provide us information by filling in this form :http://bersih.org/wp-conte?nt/uploads/2011/07/Profile?-of-victim-testimony-Bersi?h-2.01.doc

Once you fill in the form, send it via email to info@bersih.org with the title 9 July Police Abuse. You can also fax the form to 03-7784 4978.

2. Photographs and videos of police abuse

The police have revealed their own carefully selected images to demonise the rally. BERSIH 2.0 and SUARAM are also compiling our own video and photo evidence.

We are compiling photos and videos of the following incidents:

a) The circumstances surrounding the death of Baharuddin Ahmad
b) The arrest of Muhammad Sabu
c) Unwarranted police attacks at the KL Sentral underpass
d) Violent abuse and arrest by police
e) Shooting of water cannon and teargas into Tung Shin Hospital

Please send any personal photographic and video evidence to info@bersih.org by 3 August 2011.

We appreciate all credible information shared with us. Please help us spread the word to all your friends and family who attended Perhimpunan BERSIH 2.0 on 9 July.

July 9: Bernama journos' accounts of Bersih 2.0

The illegal assembly held in the federal capital on July 9 was an attempt to challenge the country's institutions especially the police for the political interests of certain quarters.

Organised by an illegal organisation known as Bersih 2.0 purportedly to call for electoral reform, the rally was held in total disregard to calls by the authorities not to hold street demonstrations and obejctions from the public.

A team of Bernama journalists was on duty at several locations around Kuala Lumpur to record the event that took place on that day.

The following accounts were recorded by journalists who witnessed first hand what happened on July 9:

Mohd Noor Firdaus Mohd Azil

Location: Stadium Merdeka and Menara Maybank

I was assigned to cover the illegal assembly at Stadium Merdeka with three other journalists.

Travelling in a Bernama official car, we could go through several roads blocked by traffic police with the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) and members of the Malaysian Civil Defence Department also present.

As we arrived at Jalan Stadium, we saw the road had been fortified with rolls of barbed wire. The police told us to register before being allowed to enter the area.

After waiting for two hours, an Utusan Malaysia journalist and I took the decision to check out the surrounding areas. As we descended to Bulatan Merdeka, we saw a group of Bersih supporters walking briskly into a backlane parallel to Petaling Street.

We followed them and came upon a bigger group at Petaling Street. Then we heard a person shouting "We are changing the plan. Directive from higher ups wants us to gather at Menara Maybank and disperse."

When the crowd entered Jalan Tan Cheng Lock in front of the Kota Raya Shopping Complex, the situation became chaotic and the air smelt acrid, piercing the nose.

(It was believed tear gas had been released in the area earlier) As we approached Menara Maybank, we could see commotions all over the place when a group of demonstrators was being pursued by a team of policemen on the fringe of Menara Maybank.

At that moment, the FRU got ready at the junction with Jalan Tun Perak while the crowd which kept swelling in numbers was led by PKR leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegu Bard, in front of the Pudu Raya Bus Terminal.

As it began to rain, the protesters started crying " Allahu Akbar", "Reformasi", "Tumbang BN" and "BN Zalim". There were however no cries relating to fight for transparency of the Election Commission as they had promoted earlier.

With the standoff converging in front of Pudu Raya, the FRU gave the crowd three warnings to disperse but the demonstrators refused to budge.

On the final count, the FRU had no choice but to activate crowd dispersal, firing tear gas canisters flying and spraying water canons.

The Utusan Malaysia journalist and I were caught in the middle between the demonstrators and FRU and we tried to seek shelter in a car park but the thick gas enveloping the area, caused us to feel breathless.

Before we knew it, the impact of the tear gas hit us right in our face and in that instance, we felt nausea and our eyes stinging.

We were almost on the verge of fainting. I immediately grabbed a bottle of mineral water from my bag to wet my shirt and wash my face. More mineral water bottles were given by a policeman in civilian clothes who saw us get caught in the commotion.

As I could not see where my colleague was, I decided to get out of the area to a lane where several people were handing out salt and water to rub on the face to relieve the effects of tear gas.

When the situation subsided, the rain stopped and I came out to check on the latest situation. At that time, I saw members of the police starting to arrest demonstrators who tried provoke them.

Later, the member of Parliament for Bruas, Ngeh Koo Ham from DAP and MP for Subang from PKR R Sivarasa with a PAS member (later I found out he was the person who feigned dead – Suhardi Mohd) were discussing with the police to allow the procession towards Stadium Merdeka.

With the greenlight from the police, the group led by Chegu Bard member ascended the hill to Stadium Merdeka while the crowd swelled into a huge column.

At Stadium Merdeka, the procession met and merged with another swarm led by PAS vice-president Husam Musa.

Negotiations were held with the police but this time, they were not allowed to enter the stadium compound.

Mohd Faizal Hassan

Location: Puduraya Bus Station

A media colleague and I were located somewhere between shops near the Puduraya bus station when I felt my eyes and nose burning, making it difficult to breathe.

That was my first encounter with tear gas which was fired by police to disperse the July 9 illegal rally.

After washing up with salt water, 10 minutes later I rushed to find a higher location where I could get a clearer picture of what was going on.

I could see that despite having been directed by the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) to leave, the rally's participants, mostly men, refused to do so. They stood about 50 metres from policemen, but I saw no police brutality in the incident.

Tear gas was released into a clear area and it was the wind that carried the fumes. No water cannons hit rally participants.

The 1pm incident caused the group to move towards Bukit Bintang, but they stopped near the Tung Shin Hospital for shelter from the pouring rain.

I took that time to clean myself up in the hospital parking lot and perform my prayers.

While at the parking lot, I saw a woman and her two young sons who seemed lost and unaware of what was happening.

I quickly told them to leave the area and go towards the FRU who were waiting near Jalan Bukit Bintang in case of untoward incidents.

As expected, protestors walked to Jalan Bukit Bintang from the hospital minutes later but were blocked by the FRU.

The FRU acted wisely by practising their standard operating procedure (SOP) such as giving out warnings before using tear gas and water cannons on the crowd in the streets.

Because of the rain, tear gas was carried through the wind towards the hospital parking lot and groups of rioters were seen leaving the area using other routes to Jalan Bukit Bintang.

They arrived near the Istana Hotelthen moved on to KLCC and Pudu Raya. Police arrived at the scene 20 minutes after rioters assembled and shouted anti-government slogans.

The FRU arrived later and used their SOPs again, this time successfully arresting rioters while others fled into KLCC, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng and surrounding areas.

That was when I saw an ambulance, probably tending to an injured participant, which left Jalan Ampang for the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

I then returned to the office and several hours later received news that a participant had died in the KLCC area due to breathing difficulties.

Zulhilmi Supaat

Location: Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters

Several organisers of the illegal rally who were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters for questioning admitted they were treated well by the police.

S Ambiga who was detained at 2.30 pm at KL Sentral and released at 6.30pm the same evening, conceded that the police took good care of her throughout the time.

She looked cheerful while leaving the station and told reporters she was also satisfied with the facilities provided to those detained at the Police Training Centre, Pulapol, which included food, water and prayer rooms.

In fact, she was shocked to find out Pulapol had served them 'nasi beriani' and said,"We had no 'nasi beriani' here but I was treated well during the 45 minutes questioning, I have no complaints against the police."

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang who was also detained at the headquarters was given a ride home by the police at 7.30pm that night.

Almost 100 PAS supporters who had waited outside to meet their leader were dissatisfied and a handful of them turned abusive towards the police guarding the entrance.

They only calmed down after PAS assistant secretary-general Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi who happened to be there made a few phone calls and confirmed Abdul Hadi had been sent home.

Siti Zubaidah Abdullah

Location: Bukit Bintang

While at certain locations in the city street demonstrations were brewing and police were apprehending protesters, Bukit Bintang Walk was calm. A media group from Bernama TV, TV Al-Hijrah, Astro Awani, Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian had gathered there since 9am.

At around 1pm, Umno Youth's Patriot members group appeared and started distributing red T-shirts before the arrival 30 minutes later of their leaders, BN Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, and Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.

Khairy in a brief address said the group's action was not to participate in the street demonstration but to protest against those who were trying to to cause antagonism in the country.

"We are in the front line as a peaceful group to defend our leaders and the country's harmony…the illegal assembly today is an opposition agenda hiding behind Bersih, not for a 'clean (election)' but to bring down the government," said Khairy.

Patriot members numbering more than 500 appeared determined as they marched towards Stadium Merdeka while singing the patriotic song, "Inilah Barisan Kita" while police looked set to halt them.

Earlier before the Patriot group appeared, another group with about 500 members believed to be from Bersih were on the march from Jalan Imbi towards Stadium Merdeka. It was confusing to the media assigned in the area, who nevertheless trailed after them up to Jalan Pudu.

At  Jalan Pudu in front of a hotel, a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) team had already been mobilised, complete with shields and an anti-riot water-cannon vehicle.

Meanwhile, police gave a warning to the rallying Patriot members to disperse peacefully. But the call went unheeded, while they roared "Hapus Bersih" (Destroy Bersih), "Hidup Hakyat" (Long live the people) and "Hidup Malaysia" (Long live Malaysia).

As the warnings were ignored, the security forces were left with little choice but to shoot tear gas in the direction of the group.

Police then detained Khairy, Abdul Azeez together with Umno Youth assistant secretary Megat Firdaus Megat Junid and UMNO Youth executive committee member Lokman Adam.

The situation returned to normal around 3.30pm when the group began dispersing.

Police also ordered other parties around to leave the area while the media stayed on until 4pm.

Zuriati Zulmi

Location: Sogo Complex, KLCC, KTMB Station, Menara Maybank

I was assigned to cover the illegal assembly at Kampung Baru, Maju Junction and also along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR).

This was the first time I ever covered an illegal assembly. I was so nervous and kept thinking that things could go out of control, just like most demonstrations I saw on television.

From Jalan Tun Razak to Jalan Ampang, policemen were taking control of traffic flow in several locations to help reduce traffic congestion.

While going along Jalan Bonus at about 10am, I saw a small group of demonstrators gathered there as if they were waiting for their next instruction.

Upon arriving at the Sogo shopping complex, the environment was quite calm and at 10.30am, I was ordered to go to KLCC as it was speculated that tear gas had been fired there. When I arrived at the KLCC, it turned out to be just a rumour.

At around noon, through a walkie-talkie, I heard a colleague say that the situation at the KTMB station had become heated when police tried to disperse a group of people planning to hold a gathering there.

When I arrived at the station, I saw police had already made some arrests and despite being highly provoked and bad-mouthed by aggressive demonstrators, the police appeared calm in handling the situation.

I did not see the police using brutality against the detainees.

The way the police asked their names and checked their identity cards, although firm, was still in a courteous manner.

For female detainees, there were policewomen assigned to them.

When the situation in KTMB Station returned to normal, areas in Central Market started to be flocked by Bersih supporters. From the Dayabumi building, I could see them marching to Dataran Merdeka.

There, police were heard to have warned them repeatedly to disperse, but not only the warnings were ignored, the demonstrators even shouted the words "Allahuakbar" and "Reformasi".

The demonstrators were also daring enough to provoke the police and caused the law enforcers to resort to firing tear gas.

At about 1.30pm, the weather got hotter and I realised that my water bottle was empty.

Then, I saw a 7-Eleven store and as I tried to rush in, I found the door was blocked from inside by a stack of boxes. I tried to ask for a bottle of mineral water, but the store operator refused to open the door.

So, I moved on to try my luck at a restaurant inside the Dayabumi building, but the front door of the restaurant was also closed and locked from inside.

Through the glass window, I could see there were several customers in the restaurant, so I knocked on the door and begged the restaurant owner to sell me some water.

Thank God they listened and let me in to buy some food and water.

At 2pm, based on the information I received, I walked to the Menara Maybank, accompanied by a photographer.

The FRU had already fired tear gas canisters and water cannons when we arrived there.

However, it shocked me to see so many Bersih supporters there and that they were obviously aggressive in ignoring police orders to back off and disperse.

I saw police run after some demonstrators who tried to challenge their authority. Several detainees were also seen trying to use violence against the police.

At that point, I was trying to call the headquarters to inform them about the situation when police fired another tear gas canister, causing me and other members of the press to run helter-skelter with teary eyes.

Soon after that, there was a heavy downpour and I joined other reporters to take shelter in a restaurant near the Kotaraya complex.

When the rain stopped at about 3pm, the demonstrators who also ran helter-skelter earlier came out from their hiding places and among them, there was an instigator who was shouting and urging those present to march to the Merdeka Stadium.

Along the way, they were chanting "Allahuakbar" and "Reformasi".

We (members of the press) also followed the group, but upon reaching a bend at the Central Market LRT Station, we were welcomed by another tear gas canister fired by the police. My friend and I, however, managed to escaped from the area and the gas.

Police then fired three more tear gas canisters towards the demonstrators as they still refused to disperse.

In my opinion, the canisters were fired randomly because I personally saw the police pointing the tear gas guns up in the air to enable the canisters to be fired further away.

The situation subsided at 4.15pm.

I would like to say that despite their firm action, the law enforcers had also displayed humanity because they did not use the tear gas at their whims and fancies.

Several ambulances were also seen nearby to offer help to those suffering from the tear gas.

Miki and his Fighting Fish

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 12:56 AM PDT

Last Saturday we went to Sg Buloh to buy flower pots and check out more nurseries that offer grass planting service.  Azman bought some nice pots that he uses to contain water and grows kiambang plants. It's really nice unlike the grass planting service, still the cheapest of Philippines grass including the planting service costs RM3.50 per sf so our 800sf x RM3.50 = kekurangan helaian baju raya Mummy tahun ini! Mana aci kan?

Anyway while we were pots and plants shopping, we stumbled upon an aquarium where Miki insisted to buy a fish. Lucky enough he picked the cheapest of the bunch – a Fighting Fish that costs RM2.00. Fighting Fish aka Ikan Laga is cute eh? Sayang a few of them couldn't be kept in the same aquarium, else they would make quite a pretty sight to look at.

And owhhhh.. doesn't Miki love his little fishy…. He understands now that fishes doesn't need to be fed every 15 seconds but his main worry is that the fish gets lonely!! Boleyy??

He keeps carrying the little fish bowl around the house very carefully because he knows what Darla did was extremely evil. So when he comes inside, little fishy also has to come inside and when he is out playing in the garden, lil fishy must be getting lonely in the house, maka diangkutlah mangkuk ikan itu merata-rata…

20110801-035542.jpg

Fighting Fish

One thing he did that I really cannot tahan was last night when we were going to bed. Miki knew so well he couldn't bring the fish to bed with him so in case Lil Fishy gets bored, Miki lend him some toys! Boleyyy camtu?? *pengsan*

20110801-035556.jpg

Check out Patrick Star, a Spongebob toy gun, a Pea Shooter, a tiny elephant key chain and last but not least a story book arranged closely around the fish bowl.

When asked what was he doing, "Nanti Fishy ni takde friend!" Miki answered with much concern.

Apa-apa jelah Miki, janji ko bahagia, tak penah Mummy tengok lagi orang bela ikan siap mainan dan buku cerita. Mungkin ikan laga ko tuh genius. Sabar kan je lahh..

To all my Muslim friends, Selamat Menyambut Ramadhan and Selamat Menjalankan Ibadah Puasa.

Pengundi Hantu, Pengundi Klon, Kini Pengundi Import Dikesan Di Kota Raja

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 07:46 AM PDT

-mk

Oman's rocky

The unspoilt Jabal Shams- called the Grand Canyon of Arabia - provides that perfect break from city life along with ample opportunities to indulge in adventure sports

Jabal Shams at twilight

As the mercury keeps climbing, residents in the region make a beeline for the airports to get away to a cooler place during the scorching summer.

And Oman provides choices for those who want to take short flights or even take to the road, especially for those in the UAE.

While Muscat is as hot as any other city in the GCC, Oman's east, south and northeast areas enjoy much better weather now.

The inbound tourist traffic to Oman's Dhofar region increases manyfold during the Khareef season. The temperature in the region remains low, with a continuous, slow drizzle, which beckons visitors to Salalah and the other areas in the Dhofar region.

Cool getaway

However, the 90-minute-plus flight to the southern region could be off-limits to some pockets. However, there are other much cooler places in Oman, where one can reach by driving three hours from Muscat and almost six hours from Dubai.

Jabal Shams is one such place, which offers pleasant weather, breathtaking views and a rustic way of life.

We decided to spend a weekend at Jabal Shams and the first thought was food, as vegetarian dishes could be a problem in a place where, three years ago, there was no lodging facility and visitors had to pitch their own tents.

However, Kownain, the affable manager at the Jabal Shams base camp (JSBC), assured us there wouldn't be any problem with vegetarian food at their camp, which had been started only two years ago.

JSBC, which is 2,000 metres above sea level, is one of the two options available for boarding at Jabal Shams, also known as camel hideout.

Diverse topography

Oman offers diverse topography but as we got nearer to Jabal Shams, we realised it would have been a mistake not to visit this mountain range, which boasts canyons that are compared by travellers with the Grand Canyon of Arizona in the US.

The highest point of Jabal Shams (also known as the Mount of the Sun) is 3,050 metres above sea level and part of the Jabal Al Akhdar (the Green Mountain) range. The long, sinuous road and a dirt trek to the 600-kilometre stretch of mountains is a spectacular drive but can also be a deterrent for some. Therefore, Jabal Shams is not crowded like so many other hill stations.

A heavy shower on the first evening made our day at the Jabal Shams. It not only brought the temperature down further but the rains stopped just before the canyons were doused in sunlight.

Twilight provided breathtaking views of the canyon, as several waterfalls streaming down the mountains appeared like white lines running across the mountains of varied hues.

A bright Sun can raise apprehensions as one approaches Jabal Shams but rest assured, if afternoons are pleasantly warm, the early mornings, evenings and nights can send you scurrying for warm clothes.

Snowy slopes

During winter, the mercury dips below zero in Jabal Shams and in the past two years, even snowfall has been reported here.

Located in the Dakhiliyah region of Oman, one should be respectful of the elevation and not be persuaded by allusions to sunlight that Jabal Shams is warm.

Even in the summer, the nights are chilly and if you stay overnight, it is advisable to carry warm clothes.

The area has many splendid hiking trails and it is a wonderful place to explore. However, the population is sparse and amenities limited, so remember to pack along whatever you might require during your time here.

Those looking for adventure can also opt for Jabal Shams, as it provides ample scope for trekking and steep mountain climbing. JSBC also provides experts to guide you through your adventure trips in canyons.

Best of both attractions

Fortunately, Jabal Shams is unspoilt terrain so far and offers perfect opportunities for solitude to those seeking to get away from the humdrum of daily city life.

You can also combine a trip to Jabal Shams with a visit to the nearby town of Bahla, which is known for its pottery.

And, of course, there are three forts that could be included in the itinerary — but more about forts some other time.

Ulangsiar: Najib Liabiliti Paling Besar Untuk UMNO

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 05:00 AM PDT

"Mengapa Umno terpaksa singkirkan Najib?

Tambah beliau lagi, gesaan Gabungan Pilihan Raya Bersih dan Adil (Bersih 2.0) agar transformasi sistem pilihan raya dilaksanakan menyerlahkan lagi betapa buruknya kepimpinan Najib.

Kelmarin polis membebaskan enam pemimpin PSM termasuk Ahli Parlimen Sungai Siput Dr Michael Jeyakumar yang ditahan selama 28 hari sejak 2 Julai lalu tanpa sebarang syarat. -tvsnews

My old friend and former colleague, P.T., wrote the following post upon my request. P.T. taught Mathematics in Australia, Kuala Lumpur and Penang from 1970 to 1993. He was Head of Mathematics, Examinations Secretary and the Discipline Master in the school. P.T., a caring teacher and friend,  has a deep passion for maths and is one of the best maths teachers I know. Whenever we meet for lunch to catch up, we would both lament about the current deplorable standards in education. I saw a paragraph in his FB notes and immediately requested him to expand it into a full post so here it is:

_____________

On my recent trip to Perth, my nephew asked me to help him with a Maths question from passed Yr 12 WA Maths paper that he could not understand: "Prove that the difference of the squares of CONSECUTIVE INTEGERS is always odd." He cannot understand what is "Consecutive integers". What has happened to the standards throughout the World? Basic vocabulary in Mathematics are not being taught to students nowadays. Instead, "pigeon information" is being taught!

Moreover, the standard of comprehension of the English Language amongst students nowadays is very lacking! On another occasion,  I asked another student from MLC College in Melbourne: "What is a RATIONAL number?" She just looked blankly at me as if I had spoken in GERMAN to her!

Then I asked her : "Do you understand the meaning of RATIONAL?".

She answered "NOPE".

If this is the case with most of our students nowadays, how can they cope with questions in paragraph form which appear in paper 2 and requires a good understanding of the English Language to interpret what the question wants?

Moreover, Cambridge IGCSE examination in Mathematics has lowered their standard at the beginning of 2010 because most students in UK cannot pass their Mathematics! With the help of calculators and other equipments, the students are still struggling! Students are not taught to learn how to estimate an answer so that when they use their calculators , they can know whether what they have punched in and the answer they get is correct! Now most students cannot live without a calculator! Their brain cannot function anymore!

In the old days, the grades were very distinct: A, B, C ,D, E and so on.....When you get an "A", you really deserved that "A" and it was a solid "A". Nowadays, there are A*, A, A-, etc....but all "HOLLOW" A's. I have tested a few top scoring students from my old School that I taught before and guessed what? Very disappointing to learn that these so-called "A*" students cannot answered a simple question that I put forward to them! Why are parents paying so much money for a better education system at a private school and not getting their money worth?

I sincerely hope that teachers will go back to the BASICS and teach their students the basic foundations in their respective subjects so that when they progress to the upper forms and Universities, they are well-equip and able to cope at that level! Teachers must sacrifice more of their time and be more dedicated in their profession and ensure that the students under their care are well taken care of!

My heart is very heavy looking at the present situation of the Education systems and standards throughout the World!

I rest my case.

Not Just Another Student

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 02:32 AM PDT

It is not easy to coach students. In fact, it can be quite a gruelling affair for both parties. However, in time, the rewards are satisfying and long-lasting. Jean-Pierre, my friend's son, came to me last November. Through the months, he has been gaining momentum and has made progress in many areas. I have known him since he was three days old :-). Today, I had to tighten the screws and he diligently sent me three assignments. Here's one that he completed for me today on Eminem. Am very proud of him and hope that he will continue to be improve from one degree to another.

_____________________________________

Marshall Bruce Mather lll, more commonly known as Eminem or his alter ego Slim Shady, was born on October 17th, 1972 in a fairly large town of Saint Joseph, Missouri. His father: Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr abandoned his family when Marshall was only 18 months of age. From then on his mother, Deborah R. Nelson Mathers-Briggs, raised Marshall single-handedly. The family was nomadic, moving to different states across America from Savannah to Kansas City until they settled down in Warren, Michigan a suburb of Detroit. By the time Marshall and his mom settled in Warren, he was already 12 years of age.

His childhood was far from pleasant, having received bullying in the form of physical abuse by DeAngelo Bailey. The shocking abuse commenced on October 15th, 1981 when Marshall was 9 years-old. The abuse hospitalized Marshall and made his mother file a lawsuit against the Detroit school system for failing to protect her son from this horrific abuse. Bailey first started by splitting Marshall's lip and knocking-the-wind out of him. This escalated to more violent beatings which articles from newspapers stated that he sustained injuries to his head, face, back and legs until the point where Bailey threw a snowball encasing a heavy object before he claimed another beating.

Marshall was always on the move because of his family's meager financial status landing themselves into public housing, mobile homes, or under the care of relatives. This is where he witnessed his mother taking prescribed drugs, such as: Vicodin and Valium. Only later in his life, when confronted with interviews, he stated that his mother was abusing the drugs; which was further enforced with a lawsuit from his mother pressing charges of defamation. Not only did he make an assumption about her drug addiction but also accused her of having Munchausen syndrome (a factitious disorders where the "patients" feign diseases, illness, or psychological trauma to attract attention or sympathy). Although never justified, Marshall brought up her disorder in his song "Cleaning Out My Closet" (The Eminem Show, 2002) by singing: "my whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn't... it makes you sick to your stomach, doesn't it?"

Even though faced with many obstacles, rap was an outlet for his frustration. At the age of 14 Marshall joined a group called "Bassmint Productions" under the name of "M and M" procuring the approval of the predominant African-American industry. Marshall repeated the ninth grade twice before finally dropping out of college. At the age of 17, he dedicated his time and effort to becoming a professional rapper. He began by recording his first album Infinite by Bassmint recording studio. This burning passion to succeed was fueled by the announcement that Marshall was going to be a father. Critics claimed that his style of rapping echoed that of Nas and AZ. After the failure of the album, Kim ended their relationship, did not allow Marshall, to see his newborn child. He attempted suicide with a drug overdose of Tylenol, but luckily failed. Once their daughter, Hailie Jade Scott, was born she went on to be an important part his life. Marshall wanted her to have the childhood he never had - having a fatherly figure and no financial worries.

Marshall's stage name "M&M" then was changed to what we current know as Eminem. He participated in rapping competitions placing runner up in freestyle Rap Olympics 1997. Founder of Interscope Records, Jimmy Iovine witnessed Eminem's achievement during the Rap Olympics and was impressed by Eminem's fresh and bold style of rapping. Soon after Iovine asked Eminem for a demo tape and played it for their super-producer Dr. Dre who instantly fell in love with what he heard. This sparked a creative partnership between the two rappers, Dr. Dre and Eminem, which last till to date. Interscope rapidly signed Eminem, soon after The Slim Shady EP was released, February 1999. This was Eminem's debut album with Dr. Dre being his producer. Slim Shady was Eminem's Hyde, an alter ego. "Slim Shady is the evil side of me, the sarcastic, foul-mouthed side of me," he said during an interview with the Source.

Eminem expresses his gratitude towards Dr. Dre in the platinum single I Need a Doctor released on February 1st 2011. Eminem mentions a great deal about Dr. Dre being a mentor and how he came to Eminem's side at his lowest point in life. Eminem wrote: "You picked me up, breathing life in me, I owe my life to you."

The Slim Shady EP was praised as "light years ahead of the material he had been writing beforehand" by Billboard. The album contains various songs relating to violence, deceit and murder.

A year later, Eminem released a new album: The Marshall Mathers LP selling over 1.76 million copies in its first week, surpassing Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle. This album was similar and yet different to its predecessor The Slim Shady EP. The song "The Real Slim Shady" sparked controversy among celebrities, insulting them by making claims about Christina Aguilera performing oral sex with Fred Durst and Carson Daly. "Stan" another song on this album shows Eminem showing the pressure and stress being placed on him by his record company which mirroring the song "97 Bonnie and Clyde" from the album The Slim Shady EP. Although this album reached platinum status ten times, there was still the GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) which condemned Eminem's lyrics to be homophobic. They took to the streets at the Staples Centre where the Grammy awards were being hosted.

Although Eminem's rise to stardom, he never forgot his roots and what he truly believes in and what he raps about. His third major alum The Eminem Show topping the chart as well as selling over a million copies in its first week. This rapper speaks his mind and how he feels. This album reflects upon the stress stardom has put on the relationship he has with his wife and daughter as well as releasing the tension he has about a bouncer, he found kissing his wife. This album again reached ten times platinum.

Encore! Eminem never stops as he released yet another album named Encore which was released on December 2003. It featured the songs: "Just Lose It" and "Mockingbird". "Just Lose It" defamed and insulted Michael Jackson, retaliating by reporting to a Los-Angeles radio show Steve Harvey about his displeasure towards video. "Mockingbird" was one of his timeless songs where he reminisces about is daughter and he depicts her life from her eyes. He also has a song that went against war: "Mosh"

Truly Eminem is rap legend worthy to be deemed best Rapper of the 21st century. His impact on the hip hop community has set alight many flames. His bravery can be seen throughout his life from the suburbs of Detroit to the limelight he has achieved. Till date he will be an inspiration for many generations to come. Eminem went on to produce more award winning album's such as Relapse, Relapse: Refill as well as his latest Recovery.

Arranging for a shelter home…

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 02:13 AM PDT

When I texted SN on Saturday to inform her of Shila's passing, despite it being her off day, SN immediately called me back as she too, like the rest of us, was shocked with the news.

And since she was already on the line with me, SN took the opportunity to ask about Faridah (see my earlier posting here). I told SN I had not called the shelter home to ask if they'd accept Faridah, because when I spoke to Faridah's sister-in-law last week, I was made to understand that both sides of the family agreed that even if Faridah were to leave her MIL's home, it should be after her iddah is over.

When I told SN that they wanted to wait until Faridah's iddah is over, and that would be in another 4 months time, SN got worried. Due to Faridah's condition (she had defaulted her appointments before this and her CD4 had gone down) the doctor wants her to start her antiretroviral (ARV) soonest. However, if she continues to stay with her MIL, we can be very sure she will not be compliant in taking her ARV.

You can teach Faridah that she's supposed to take her medication, say at 10 am for example, but Faridah isn't even able to tell the time. Seriously! And since her MIL is also unwell, we can't depend on her MIL to be reminding her either. And nobody else stays there with them. In other words, for as long as Faridah continues to stay with her MIL, there is no point letting her start her ARV. Her side of the family, as mentioned in my earlier posting, is not willing to take her to stay with them, which was why they wanted her to go to a shelter home.

I had earlier agreed to help them find a place for Faridah after her iddah is over – at that time I had not discussed with SN or the doctor about her condition. But after listening to SN, I must agree that the sooner Faridah gets proper care, the better.

So this morning I called up the person in charge at a shelter home for HIV+ Muslim women, and she had no problem accepting Faridah anytime. I then called up Faridah's SIL, the one I met last week. After explaining things to her, she too agreed that maybe we shouldn't wait until the iddah is over. I also asked if they could arrange to send Faridah to KL themselves, and by the sound of it, I think it shouldn't be a problem. Since she will be bringing Faridah for another appointment in Ipoh GH next week, we agreed to meet up and discuss matters further then. I'd need them to decide on a date so I can inform the person in charge at the shelter home.

So far the women I had arranged to send to shelter homes had been young 20-something year old women. This is the first time I'm arranging to send an HIV+ woman who's almost half a century old to a shelter home. Well, at least part 1 of the problem is settled…

Ah Beng Jokes

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 01:19 AM PDT

Ah Beng bought a new mobile.
He sent a message to everyone from his Phone Book & said,
'My Mobile No. Has changed. Earlier it was Nokia 3310. Now it is 6610'

Ah Beng: I am Proud, coz my son is in Medical College .
Friend: Really, what is he studying.
Ah Beng: No, he is not studying, they are studying him.

Ah Beng: Doctor, in my dreams, I play football every night.
DR: Take this tablet, you will be ok.
Ah Beng: Can I take tomorrow, tonight is final game.

Ah Beng: If I die, will u remarry?
Wife: No! I'll stay with my sister. But if I die will u remarry?
Ah Beng: No, I'll also stay with your sister.

Ah Beng: People consider me as a 'GOD'
Wife: How do you know??
Ah Beng: When I went to the Park today, everybody said,
Oh GOD! U have come again.

Ah Beng complained to the police: 'Sir, all items are missing,
except the TV in my house.'
Police: 'How the thief did not take TV?'
Ah Beng: 'I was watching TV news...'

Ah Beng comes back 2 his car & find a note saying 'Parking Fine'
He Writes a note and sticks it to a pole 'Thanks for compliment.'

How do you recognize Ah Beng in School?
He is the one who erases the notes from the book when the teacher erases
the board.

Once Ah Beng was walking he had a glove on one hand and not on other.
So the man asked him why he did so. He replied that the weather forecast
announced that on one hand it would be cold and on the other hand it would
be hot.

Ah Beng in a bar and his cellular phone rings. He picks it up and
Says 'Hello, how did you know I was here?'

Ah Beng: Why are all these people running?
Man: This is a race, the winner will get the cup
Ah Beng: If only the winner will get the cup, why others running?

Teacher: 'I killed a person' convert this sentence into future tense
Ah Beng: The future tense is 'u will go to jail'

Ah Beng told his servant: 'Go and water the plants!'
Servant: 'It's already raining.'
Ah Beng: 'So what? Take an umbrella and go.'

A man asked Ah Beng why Ahmad Badawi goes walking in the Evening and not
in the morning. Ah Beng replied Ahmad Badawi is PM not AM

Thanks to Freddie who sent me this joke. Have a nice day!

Pelajar Dirogol Masa Ponteng Sekolah

Dirogol ketika ponteng sekolah

MAHANG - Seorang bapa berusia 56 tahun yang dipanggil ke sekolah untuk berjumpa guru anak perempuannya berusia 16 tahun terkejut apabila dimaklumkan anaknya dirogol dua pelajar lelaki. Gambar fail.

Lori Sampah Lori Penyakit?

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 12:19 AM PDT

Salam to all & good day,
Betul ke lori sampah ni lori penyakit? 90 peratus mengatakan lori sampah memang lori membawa penyakit, sakit apa? sakit hidung, perhatikan betul-betul lori sampah kat malaysia, kalau di teliti baik-baik lori sampah ni seakan-akan lori yang tidak terjaga dan terurus langsung, asyik nak kaut untuk, semua sampah diselongkar, dikoyakkan kan plastiknya nak cari tin aluminium, nak cari botol plastik dan besi buruk dan lain-lain.

Tapi hakikatnya, dalam tidak sedar lori sampah menyusahkan orang lain, tengok depan rumah tu, ada je lori sampah, ade juga air busuk dan hanyir tentu ada depan tar rumah tu, bau memang teruk, heran kenapa air busuk ni tetap diorg nak pam depan rumah orang, sedangkan dah tahu air tu membawa pelbagai penyakit dan kuman jika ia kering dan air busuk tu kering boleh memuntahkan orang!

Aku pernah tgk kat tv la, citer mr bean, dalam citer tu mr bean siap masuk dalam lori sampah nak cari bola golf dalam tu, kalau tak silap kalau lori sampah tu besih giler, cara diorg kutip sampah pun seorang je yang kutip dan seorang je yang memandu, tapi tak tau la kalau tu betul atau tidak cara kutipan sampah kat sana, sedangkan mr bean boleh masuk dalam lori sampah, ni kan dia nak masuk lori sampah kita yang kotor dan berkerak tu.

Orang kerja kutip sampah ni mulia sebenarnya, kadang-kadang naik menyampah pun ada, kalau nak asingkan sampah pun jangan lah dekat jalan, pergi lah kat tempat lain then ko asingkan lah sampah-sampah tu sampai pagi pun takpe, ni lori dia dah besar gedabak, then duk tengah-tengah jalan halangkan jalan kita, memang menyampah betul.

Terfikir juga diorang ni kutip sampah atau selerakkan sampah? tu yang bikin sakit hati, bila sampah dengan sisa-sisa ayam, daging or lauk yang dah basi berlendir dan busuk tu dikoyakkan plastiknya, apa jadi? tu air busuk tu menitis meleleh kat kat jalan, tu yang bikin busuk keadaannya.

Lori sampah ni dan pekerja ni aku respek sebab diorg buat kerja mulia, tapi kalau dah sampai menyusahkan dan kebersihan terabai, aku anggap diorg ni gagal menyempurnakan kerja diorg yg telah diamanahkan….

Fikir-fikirkan…..

Kalau Saya Salah..Maafkan Saya — Memang Kau Salah! —- NIAMAH!!!!!

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 12:17 AM PDT

Salam to all & good day,

Pilihanraya Olok-olok BN Jelaskan PR Bakal Tawan Putrajaya
