Ramadan 'pork fest': The Star must investigate

Ramadan 'pork fest': The Star must investigate

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:28 AM PDT

Supplement Ramadan Delights - an ad 'Best Rib In Town' in Page 2, 'Whipping up an appetite, Mongolian Pork Ribs' in Page 4 and 'Authentic Prime Pork Ribs' in Page 7. In The Star yesterday.

Fulamak! I bet my good friend Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai will 'kena' again - from Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Utusan Malaysia, JAKIM and other Islamic organisations and of course, from some bloggers.

Who to blame? Chun Wai? The whole newspaper organisation or the people in-charge of the Supplement. But... one after another.

Nope! I dont blame Chun Wai although he is the big boss there. The team which managed the Supplement must be held responsible!

Where were the Supplement Editor, the Proof Editor and the Chief Sub-Editor? Who was in-charge of picking the right picture for the right stories? Don't tell me that the sub-editors who designed the pages were not aware what kind of a Supplement was it?

(Or was there a cahoot to bring Chun Wai down?)

Not one but three pages of 'delicacies for Ramadan' was not unintentional. It was done deliberately to smear the newspaper's integrity and push Chun Wai's off the edge. But who are they?

Chun Wai is not fully responsible. As the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib has a group of subordinates (ministers) to assist him run the country. If Najib has to do and monitor everything, there would be no need to appoint the ministers, the secretary-generals and other senior officers.

And so is Chun Wai's position. Where were his deputies, senior editors, editors and others? Didn't anybody spot the error?

I think its high time for The Star to start scouting for new talents to run such a business, people who are sensitive to racial and religious issue and people who don't pull 'stupid jokes' like this!

Whatever action to be taken against the newspaper, I don't second the 'some heads must roll' notion! Yes, it was an uncalled error but I think it was not meant to insult the Muslims... it was meant to insult those responsible for producing such a Supplement.

However, someone just text me that the pictures and stories were not meant for Ramadan Supplement. They chose the wrong Supplement Strap!

BERS✔H 2.0: Tindakan Polis Jadikan Kami Terkenal

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:19 AM PDT

Terharu melihat sokongan ramai: Chon Kai rasa penahanannya "berbaloi"

Petugas bank sanggup menunggu

"Mereka sengaja melengah-lengahkan sehingga kira-kira jam 4.30 petang. Maknanya, seandainya wang gagal dikumpulkan sebelum bank tutup pada jam 5 petang, maka 24 orang tahanan tersebut perlu meringkuk satu malam lagi di lokap. Namun, kami diberitahu petugas bank, 'Jangan risau, kami sanggup menunggu, kerana kami sokong kamu semua!'"

Mengapa pula PSM dijadikan sasaran?

A hectic day at the clinic

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 07:56 AM PDT

Usually during any of our clinic duties, we'd get at the most 3 or 4 cases each time, with maybe only one or two problematic ones… sometimes none at all. So when I went for my clinic duty today, I had expected the same thing.

I had brought along with me a few of the "Positive Living" booklets. SN called me on Monday to ask if I had any of the Malay and Tamil version of the booklets as she had run out of those. I didn't have any Tamil ones, but there were a few more of the Malay version at our centre, and so I brought those for SN.

The moment I got into the doctor's room, SN immediately told me about the case of one guy whom we sent to a shelter home in Penang less than 2 months ago. The guy apparently ran away from the home and is now back in Ipoh, homeless. He felt the home was too strict with regulations. Likewise there was another guy whom I had sent to a shelter home in Selangor, who also decided to leave the place and is now back in Ipoh. I remember buying t-shirts and trackbottom for the guy as otherwise I would have to bring him in hospital clothes because he didn't have any other clothes. This guy left the home because he wasn't in good terms with another occupant of the home.

Aiyoh!! As the doctor said, they don't want to stay in shelter homes, they want to stay in hotels where they don't have to pay! Susah… susah… tolong susah, tak tolong pun susah…

Anyway, after about a 15 minute chat with SN (about the above cases, about Shila's death, about another PLHIV who seemed interested to join Buddies etc), she told me there was a new case they wanted to refer to me. So off I went to the counselling room, getting ready to meet up with the new cases to be referred.

The first case referred was a guy in his 50's, married to a young wife, and they have a 5 year old daughter. He works as a carpenter, not earning much, while his wife doesn't work. While I did manage to get some info from him, when I started getting into more details, he couldn't understand me. Luckily the pharmacist in the same room, upon hearing our conversation, helped me out to speak to the guy in Chinese. Knowing that his child may need help with schooling necessities when she goes to kindergarten next year, I told the guy I'd assign him one of our Chinese volunteers so it will easier for him to communicate with us.

Next up, one lady was brought in by the nurse. Her husband had just been diagnosed +ve this year, and recent tests confirmed that the lady, Shanti, too was positive. Today was her first appointment with the doctor. Shanti's husband just started work recently as a lorry driver. They have a 6 year old daughter who is already in kindergarten and will start schooling next year. Another case needing assistance from our Children Education Fund (CEF). A buddy will need to be assigned.

Next case brought in was a prison case. The PLHIV came handcuffed to a policeman, with another policeman escorting as well. Not much for me to say except to explain to him particularly on the do's and don'ts.

Then, the nurse came in and said to me, "Ni ada satu lagi pregnant case." The lady brought in looked somewhat matured, so initially I thought it was a married case. Another lady came in with her – whom I thought to be the mother or older sister. Only when I looked at her file did I realise that it was another of those unwed pregnancy cases. The lady, 30, hails from another state and is only in Perak to be placed at the shelter home for problematic young women, temporarily. The home is full to the brim and so for unwed pregnancy cases, they'd only allow shelter until 2 weeks after delivery. Frankly, I didn't expect a 30 year old to be placed there. Usually they take only problematic teenagers.

I didn't assign any buddies for this case. She's due to deliver in October and when I asked what her plans were when she has to leave the shelter, she looked at me with that amused look and said, "Balik rumahlah, ke mana lagi?" Duh! Silly me huh? She probably never heard of those cases where the unwed mothers had no "home" to go back to.

Next up, another lady, Aiza, who is in her late 20's. She had just been diagnosed this year when her husband was hospitalised. Her husband died this year. Aiza stays in a kampong I've never heard of, and when I asked if she has a job, she told me she's a rubber tapper. Wow… she must be the most rugged rubber tapper I've ever met! :-) Aiza has no children, so I don't have to worry about children education, but she sounded interested in the activities that we organise, so I told her I'd be calling her from time to time.

Just when I thought there were no more cases for the day, the nurse said there was another new case. Well, not really a new case…. but a new case at the Ipoh ID clinic. You see, the guy had been in UK for the past 2 years and just came back recently. He had already started his ARV medication when he was in the UK. When the nurse asked the guy and his brother who came along with him if they could speak  Malay, they both said, "Aiyo, ta boleh la…" "Sikit-sikit?" "Sikit-sikit boleh la…"

So yes, they came in and I had to speak to them in the most broken Malay I could attempt. Then I remembered, hey, this guy just came back from the UK, so I tried speaking to him in English. Gosh, his English was even worse than his Malay. How on earth did he survive in the UK?? I did manage to get them to understand that I'd be assigning one of our Chinese volunteers as his buddy. The guy said, "Chinese man hokeh. I donno how to speak Malayu." (And in my head I was thinking…. Engrish oso you cannot speak lor…)

That was it – the 6 new cases I met today. A record for me. 4 of them assigned buddies. I did get to see 2 of my old clients… Maria and Lin, but since I was busy with the new cases, I didn't get to chat much with them, although I did manage to inform them about Shila's death. They both knew and had met Shila before.

When I got home, Maria called me up asking if I was still at the hospital. When I told her I was already at home, she asked if I could help her out next week.

"Kak, doktor refer saya ke clinic psychiatric pulak minggu depan. Saya tak berani la pergi sorang-sorang."

Oh dear, psychiatric? Has she been having depression? I know she was very depressed initially when she was first diagnosed +ve 5 years ago, but I thought she had gotten over it. Wonder what's going on now…

I promised to accompany her on her appointment day. Good chance for me to have a long chat with her and to find out what's going on in her life…

Heads I Win, Tails You Lose!

The poor performance of MAS in the last two quarters was a matter of concern to many. Then came the explosive announcement that Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia will swap shares in a deal which will see Tan Sri Tony Fernandes become the single biggest shareholder. The deal was apparently stealthily sealed after negotiations that stretched for about a year.

Many are alarmed over this development which poses serious concerns that Air Asia can dominate MAS thereby reducing competition between the two to the detriment of end-users. In the long run, this could lead to a virtual monopoly of the domestic airline industry. In such a scenario, we will be exposed to the risks and concerns associated with such a monopoly bearing in mind that other cronies and political power brokers could be lurking in the shadows.

Is there a conflict of interest notwithstanding his purported 'non-executive' position since the swap is accompanied by effective participation of Tony Fernandez and his nominees in the board of MAS? Have corporate governance rules been violated? Surely they have a framework of laws and guidelines for economic efficiency and ensure a firm's responsibility towards its investors and stakeholders. However, considering the level of secrecy in which this was discussed, we must question the level of transparency in the decision-making of a national issue. In fact, the Securities Commission must investigate if there any irregularities exist.

Remember back in the old days when Telekoms Malaysia monopolised the industry and service was atrocious? Only when the industry was opened to competition did we see service improve (at least some improvement). In the UK, gas and electricity is extremely competitive. Even foreign companies operate in the UK. In Malaysia we only have Gas Malaysia and TNB. That is why service is bad and expensive. In the UK, dozens of companies need to fight for the business.

With competition it can only mean good news for the consumer. And that is why many countries have anti-monopoly laws to protect the consumers.

In the US, the MAS-Air Asia deal would be blocked and citizens like you and me can go to court to file a class action suit to get the court to prevent such monopolistic mergers.

When Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963, it shared Malaysia's common currency. Later on, Singapore was expelled, became independent in 1965 and lost its monetary union. In 1967 Singapore established a Board of Commissioners of Currency and released its own notes called the orchid. The orchid is now known as the dollar (SGD). Today, the exchange rate is RM2.5: SIN$1.

Looking back, Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) came into being in 1966 as a result of a joint ownership of the airline by the governments of Malaysia and Singapore. After six years, the airline ceased operationsin 1972 when both governments decided to set up their own national airlines. That was how Malaysian Airline System, now called Malaysia Airlines, and Singapore Airlines were formed.

According to a SIA report dated 28th January 2011, the third quarter of 2010-2011 operating profit WAS UP 58% to SIN$509million (RM1.27billion). And how much does MAS make?

B.K. Sidhu of The Star reported that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) NET PROFIT FELL BY 65% to RM226mil for the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2010 from RM640mil a year earlier due to higher cost of fuel despite carrying more passengers during the quarter. The fourth quarter is normally the most profitable quarter for airlines. In terms of revenue the airline reported an 8% a rise to RM3.6bil from RM3.3bil previously.

In short, the two reports show that SIA makes about MORE THAN FIVE TIMES what MAS makes and that is taking MAS accounts at 'face value". With a fine-toothed comb, the figures may be less or even be a loss.

So why merge MAS and Air Asia when we should be talking about the poor performance of MAS? South of the border, a premium airline is raking in money while in our own homeground, the opposite is happening!! Why can't MAS stay afloat despite the many injections over the years? (Read Is Mas Still EMAS?)

Air Asia is a very highly geared company so how can that merger help MAS? Is this another DRB-Hicom reprise?

Years ago, DRB was bleeding and highly geared. What happened was not actually a merger but more like Hicom buying over DRB's debts. To add insult to injury, HICOM 'bought' DRB but DRB ended up owning Hicom - a classic case of a a reverse takeover.

So are we going to see the same here?

Recently, BBC announced that Air Asia is buying 200 of the A320neo jets, in a deal worth about $18bn (£11bn). India's IndiGo confirmed an order for 180 planes from Airbus. The report said the new versions of the A320 are in demand as their new engines make them more fuel-efficient and cheaper to run. Airbus said that the Air Asia deal made the Malaysian carrier its biggest airline customer for its single-aisle product line. Altogether, Air Asia has now placed firm orders for 375 aircraft from the A320 family, with 89 already in service.

In view of the current economic situation, this deal is worrisome. If they were to cancel the deal, they would have to pay a heavy penalty. So, with the swap shares deal, does it mean that MAS is going to 'buy' Air Asia's 'debts' or financial commitments and then Air Asia ending up owning MAS? Is this an asset stripping move in the corporate game where the rakyat end up as losers? It certainly smells like DRB-Hicom all over again.

Is the Govt selling its crown jewels? If so, why to to Air Asia? Was this deal a sweetener to keep the Air Asia HQ within Malaysia instead of Indonesia? (Read THIS.)

As for now,  the only way for MAS to make it is to merge with SIA!!! Then, we can be almost 100% sure it will be profitable!! Does this deal benefit the interests of the minority at the expense of the majority? What about the employees of MAS who have served our national carrier with selfless dedication and loyalty in spite of the circumstances they have been facing?

Why evangelicals should stop evangelizing

Editor's Note: Carl Medearis is an international expert in Arab-American and Muslim-Christian relations and is author of the book Speaking of Jesus: The Art of Not-Evangelism.By Carl Medearis, Special to CNN

Let's do an exercise. I want you to fill in the blank on what you think you know about me based on what I'm about to tell you.

Here goes: Twenty years ago, I became a missionary. My wife and I left our home in Colorado Springs, Colorado to move to Beirut, Lebanon. Our job description was to plant churches and evangelize to Muslims.

Based on what I just said, Carl Medearis is a ______________ .

Depending on your background, the blank may look something like this:

Carl Medearis is a… hero of the Christian faith, a saintly super-man willing to sacrifice the comforts of home in order to share the love of Jesus Christ with those who have never heard the gospel.

Or this:

Carl Medearis is a… right-wing extremist who destroys cultures, tears apart families and paves the way for neo-colonialist crusaders to invade, occupy and plunder the resources of local populations.

Quite a range, isn't it?

For one group of people, the words "evangelist" and "missionary" bring to mind pious heroes performing good deeds that are unattainable for the average Christian. For another group, those same words represent just about everything that's wrong with the world.

I understand the confusion.

Based on my experiences of living and traveling around the world, I know that religion is often an identity marker that determines people's access to jobs, resources, civil liberties and political power.

When I lived in Lebanon I saw firsthand how destructive an obsession with religious identity could be. Because of the sectarian nature of Lebanese politics, modern Lebanese history is rife with coups, invasions, civil wars and government shutdowns.

When I tell my Christian friends in America that some of the fiercest militias were (and are) Christian, most are shocked. It doesn't fit the us-versus-them mentality that evangelism fosters, in which we are always the innocent victims and they are always the aggressors.

This us-versus-them thinking is odd, given that Jesus was constantly breaking down walls between Jews and Gentiles, rich and poor, men and women, sinners and saints. That's why we have the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Jews in Jesus' day thought of the Samaritans as the violent heretics, much the same way that Christians think of Muslims today. The idea that a Samaritan could be good was scandalous to first century Jews.

Jesus was the master of challenging religious prejudice and breaking down sectarian walls. Why do so many Christians want to rebuild those walls?

Even the Apostle Paul insisted that it's faith in Jesus that matters, not converting to a new religion or a new socio-religious identity.

What if evangelicals today, instead of focusing on "evangelizing" and "converting" people, were to begin to think of Jesus not as starting a new religion, but as the central figure of a movement that transcends religious distinctions and identities?

Jesus the uniter of humanity, not Jesus the divider. How might that change the way we look at others?

This is more than just a semantic difference.

When I used to think of myself as a missionary, I was obsessed with converting Muslims (or anybody for that matter) to what I thought of as "Christianity." I had a set of doctrinal litmus tests that the potential convert had to pass before I would consider them "in" or one of "us."

Funny thing is, Jesus never said, "Go into the world and convert people to Christianity." What he said was, "Go and make disciples of all nations."

Encouraging anyone and everyone to become an apprentice of Jesus, without manipulation, is a more open, dynamic and relational way of helping people who want to become more like Jesus — regardless of their religious identity.

Just because I believe that evangelicals should stop evangelizing doesn't mean that they should to stop speaking of Jesus.

I speak of Jesus everywhere I go and with everyone I meet.

As founder and president of a company called International Initiatives, my work is aimed at building relationships among Christian leaders in the West and among Muslim leaders in the Middle East.

It may come as a surprise to many Christians that Muslims are generally open to studying the life of Jesus as a model for leadership because they revere him as a prophet.

But now that I'm no longer obsessed with converting people to Christianity, I've found that talking about Jesus is much easier and far more compelling.

I believe that doctrine is important, but it's not more important than following Jesus.

Jesus met people where they were. Instead of trying to figure out who's "in" and who's "out," why don't we simply invite people to follow Jesus — and let Jesus run his kingdom?

Inviting people to love, trust, and follow Jesus is something the world can live with. And since evangelicals like to say that it's not about religion, but rather a personal relationship with Jesus, perhaps we should practice what we preach.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Carl Medearis.

Isu Gereja & Murtad Dedahkan Hipokrisi UMNO

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:13 AM PDT

Murtad: Umno tolak mentah-mentah usul PAS

Dilihat lesu

Mahathir Seperti Mengakui Dakwaan Bahawa PENAWAR Hendak Jatuhkan Najib

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 05:55 AM PDT

-FMT

Umno, MCA passed 1988 state law allowing Jais to act against non-Muslims

PETALING JAYA, Aug 7 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) had likely acted within the law when it raided a church here, as a controversial enactment passed by a Barisan Nasional (BN) state government in 1988 allows action against non-Muslims. Malaysian Bar Council chief Lim Chee Wee pointed out, however, their being empowered also meant the religious authorities can only act within the confines of the Islamic laws, highlighting that the words allegedly said to prove Christians were proselytising to Muslims at the event — "Quran" and "Pray" — did not fall within the religious enforcement's context.
"Whilst Jais may have the legal power to enter the premises, it must do so on a proper legal basis that there has been an offence committed. From the presently available facts, there is no basis for its intrusion," he told The Malaysian Insider in an email.
Lim said the 1988 enactment had been deemed "far-reaching and unreasonable". — File pic
Lim said there were four existing state Islamic legislation that give the authorities wide powers to act on religious matters, namely: •  Enakmen Jenayah Syariah (Selangor) 1995 ("Enakmen Jenayah");
•  Enakmen Ugama Bukan Islam (Kawalan Pengembangan di Kalangan Orang Islam) 1988 ("Enakmen Ugama Bukan Islam");
•  Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003; and
•  Syariah Criminal Procedure (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003.
Selangor's Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Amongst Muslims) Enactment, which outlines offences deemed as acts of proselytisation by non-Muslims towards Muslims, grants the religious authorities powers to launch investigations and arrest individuals without producing a warrant.
Some offences include the persuasion or incitement of Muslims to convert, to receive instructions or to participate in any activity for the benefit of any non-Islamic religion; if non-Muslims communicate with a Muslim for the purpose of subjecting the latter to any speech on a non-Islamic religion; if a person uses certain prohibited words to describe any belief pertaining to any non-Islamic religion, and others.
The Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) was raided by Jais on Wednesday after it received a complaint that Muslims were present at a dinner function there, leading to suspicion that Christians were attempting to proselytise Muslims.
Section 11 of the enactment also describes the offences as "seizable offences", which, under the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), does not stop the police from raiding private spaces, like DUMC's rented premises here.
The Malaysian Insider understands that DAP lawmakers had raised hue and cry when the enactment bill was tabled in the Selangor state assembly in 1988, arguing that the legislation would encroach the rights of non-Muslims.
But despite the furore, the bill was passed and gazetted into law by a BN-dominated House, after it earned the blessings of even non-Muslim lawmakers, including those from MCA.
DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang confirmed the controversy, saying that the enactment had been deemed "far-reaching and unreasonable".
"I cannot remember specifically the details of the Bill but DAP strongly objected it," he told The Malaysian Insider when contacted.
Hasan is due to face the PAS CWC today. — File pic
Lim would not comment, however, when asked if this meant that blame for Jais' highly-criticised raid on the DUMC should be heaped on MCA and BN, instead of the present Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Selangor government. "At this point, we still do not know for certain on what basis Jais had conducted the raid so there may be a leap in reasoning to say who was right or wrong. Let us wait for (Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri) Khalid Ibrahim to make a statement on this first," he said, reiterating that he could not remember details of the 23-year-old enactment.
The PR state government came under fire immediately after news of the church raid on Wednesday hit the headlines, with MCA leading the chorus of disapproval on the incident.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek also lambasted PAS state executive councillor Datuk Hasan Ali for defending Jais, and warned Selangor Muslims against the Islamist party's hardline Muslim stance.
Hasan, in his defence of Jais, had explained the raid was conducted based on a complaint that said Muslims were among those attending a dinner function at the church's rented premises here.
He said the words "Quran" and "pray" were used in front of Muslims and claimed there was also proof of efforts to proselytise Muslims during the function. Those involved, he said, could face punitive action for insulting Islam under Section 10 of the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1995.
Hasan is due to face his party's central working committee (CWC) today to explain the Jais raid. The Islamist party's lawmakers have taken pains to voice their disappointment over the raids and explain circumstances where enforcement authorities can take action.

20 Orang Bertopeng & Berpenyapu Tunjuk Perasaan Di SUK Selangor

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 04:23 AM PDT

"Sepatutnya kalau Umno pejuang Islam kena nasihatlah rakan sejawat mereka. -MK

Serbuan JAIS: Penjelasan Harapan Komuniti

A father's ambition

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 12:52 AM PDT

This is what I call pushing his luck too far.

There I was, minding my own business, when I received an email from a total stranger asking me for some advice on seeking chess trainers in the Klang Valley to assess the potential of his three-year-old son. Three years old? Methinks, barely out of his diapers. Could still be sporting a dummy in his mouth. Boy, there's a lot of fatherly pride there.

Okay, so I'm a chess writer. In this field, he would probably be correct to believe that I would know quite a number of people who call themselves chess coaches. Some are quite decent but there are also those who are less-than-decent. But I'm not here to discuss their coaching capabilities. If anyone wants to know who can provide chess lessons to beginners in Penang or the Klang Valley, I can point my fingers in a few useful directions.

Which was what I did in this case. I made some suggestions to the fella and even recommended that he takes his three-year-old son to the forthcoming Malaysia Chess Festival and have a look at some of the one-day events there. Who knows, it could possibly spur his three-year-old son to really be interested in the game.

I sent off the email. And I thought that would be the end of the matter. It's normally the case with strangers asking me chess questions. They'd be so satisfied (I haven't met anyone who has expressed dissatisfaction, really) with my answers that if there was ever a follow-up email, it would be just to thank me for my response.

Today, I logged into my inbox. Ah, several email messages there, including one from this same fella. Probably, a short note to thank me but let me see what he wrote. True enough, he thanked me but huh, what's this? Now he's asking me whether I have any advice on professional coaching for his three-year-old son in competitive gymnastic and also in playing the violin and the cello. Talk about fatherly ambition!

Like I said, this is what I call pushing his luck too far.

MAFREL: Bersihkan Daftar Pemilih Sebelum Terjadi Sebarang Hal Buruk Ketika PRU13

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 02:12 AM PDT

Mafrel mahu SPR bersih daftar pemilih elak implikasi ketika PRU-13

-TMI

Bersih 2.0 'not significant' but certainly raised an awareness among rakyat!

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 11:07 PM PDT

EXCLUSIVE Despite the apparent local furore and international splash that the recent Bersih 2.0 electoral reform rally is said to have created, a local pollster believes the event's immediate impact on Malaysians is practically negligible.

NONEMerdeka Centre director Ibrahim Suffian (right) told Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview yesterday that there was no shift in any significant terms that Merdeka Centre detected and related how the polling firm's preliminary findings suggests that popular support levels have been more or less consistent, before and after the rally.

Ibrahim explained away any detected reduction in support for BN as "an insignificant reduction", caused by inflation fears or the perception of certain leaders and was of the opinion that BN still commanded the majority of about 55 to 58 percent, especially among the Malays. ."

He said that though the presence of up to 30,000 people at the event, with high numbers of youth, was an actual measure of support for electoral reform, it was only true for a small fraction of the population.

When asked to analyse the impact of the July 9 rally staged by Bersih 2.0, a coalition of NGOs pushing for electoral reforms, Ibrahim explained, saying,"At the event, yes, there may have been thousands of people, but when we do surveys we look at a wider population of the entire country."

Ibrahim argued that there were millions more Malaysians beyond the Klang Valley who have neither heard about Bersih nor cared about it due to the lack of access to alternative news for most Malaysians living outside the major cities.

The pollster related the response from the youth when they were asked about Bersih as part of a Merdeka Centre survey with the common responses being, "I don't know; I heard they wanted to demonstrate or whatever; I don't care about politics."
NONEThe government had outlawed the group and declared the rally illegal, cracking down hard on the people who took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur to take part in the rally.

Seks Pelajar Menjadi-Jadi, Apa Nak Jadi Ni?

Lokasi maksiat terbongkar

KULIM - Masalah sosial remaja semakin membimbangkan setiap hari.

Hanya satu penyelesaiannya: BACK TO ISLAM.
