Time for Malaysia to Move Forward

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 10:00 AM PDT

You would think that Hari Raya would be the last time for politics the headlines. But this is Malaysia, and politics, for better or for worse, permeates every bit of our life.

The recent controversy over PAS Deputy President Mohamad Sabu's statement on the Bukit Kepong incident and PM Dato' Seri Najib Razak's Malaysia Day speech dominated this year's Syawal.

Regarding Mat Sabu's comments, it has to be said that historiography aside, it is only just to argue that all those who fought for our Independence should be acknowledged. This ought to be regardless if they stood on the right or left, whether they were from UMNO or PUTERA, AMCJA or MCA.

It is historical fact that the left first envisioned that Malaya ought to be independent through the People's Constitution put forward by the PUTERA-AMCJA coalition.

It is also historical fact that PUTERA-AMCJA was suppressed by the British for no good reason. What was lost in the controversy was that the left chose various means to respond to the suppression.

Take the case of three AWAS leaders (which were part of PUTERA): Aishah Ghani, Khatijah Sidek and Shamsiah Fakeh after 1948. Aishah joined UMNO – becoming a Cabinet Minister and Head of Wanita UMNO.

Khatijah also joined UMNO and became Head of Pergerakan Kaum Ibu UMNO (the forerunner to Wanita UMNO). She was outspoken and passionate on women's issues and was hence sacked from the party. She joined PAS, led Kaum Ibu PAS (the forerunner to Muslimat PAS) and became MP for Dungun – an amazing feat in the 50s when a woman MP was still a controversial idea in UMNO.

Shamsiah Fakeh chose to join the Malay regiment of the Communist Party of Malaya. After the regiment was forced to retreat to the Malaya-Thai border, she went to China to work with the Communist propaganda machinery. What people may not know is that she broke from Chin Peng due to factional struggles in CPM and Mao's Cultural Revolution. Unable to return to Malaysia, Shamsiah and her family settled down as ordinary workers in China until they were allowed to return to Malaysia in 1994.

Who are we to judge these courageous Ibu-Ibu Kemerdekaan who chose different paths after their stint with AWAS? Without the convenient benefit of hindsight, how would they know which party would lead Malaya after Merdeka and who remained true to their ideals and aspirations? We must understand their decisions from the context of their times, not ours.

At the same time, we cannot belittle those on the right-wing either. This was after all the original UMNO, not today's UMNO Baru.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, a prince and the country's Bapa Kemerdekaan died without much wealth to his name. He sacrificed his property for the struggle and did not enrich himself like some people in power today.

Tun Dr. Ismail Abdul Rahman, the Deputy Prime Minister to Tun Razak Hussein was Home Minister during 13 May 1969, but his principled handling of the incident earned him the respect of both the Malays and the non-Malays.

When the country was about to embark on the NEP, he spoke passionately in its favour yet insisted that it was to be but a temporary measure. Indeed, he feared that regarding the Policy as permanent would be disastrous for the Malays.

My grandfather, Haji Nik Hassan Nik Mat, was an ustaz attached to the police, then under British control. Surely my grandfather was not a British stooge but a creature of his time and circumstance?

Of course, a broader reading of our country's history is needed as our younger generation may fall prey to biased accounts in schools, universities, Biro Tatanegara camps and the mainstream media. Historical revisionism is natural and we should welcome it.

But that should be left to the historians. Politicians should focus on the present and the future. Malaysia is facing enormous challenges in an uncertain time. Surely we ought to be working on how we are to face these challenges than debating historical technicalities?

Najib's Malaysia Day announcement is a case in point. It is refreshing that after more than 50 years of Independence, the PM acknowledged that the rakyat's quest to abolish detention without trial and liberalise media laws is actually right.

We would like to think that the PM is being sincere in his proposals. Unfortunately ordinary Malaysians have had their hearts broken too many times by half-hearted or aborted reforms.

One of the first acts that Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad did when he became PM in 1981 was to release 21 ISA detainees. Mahathir would later however be remembered for arresting hundreds under the ISA during Operasi Lalang in 1987 and Reformasi beginning in 1998. He also essentially strangled Malaysia's media.

Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi also won a resounding victory in 2004 by promising reform and ironically, distancing himself from Mahathir. While Abdullah clearly had good intentions and overcame some of Mahathir's excesses, most of the reforms did not get anywhere. This contributed to the major reversal of BN's fortunes four years later.

It is quite likely that PM will have a tough time justifying the changes to his party's right-wing. UMNO-BN is basically addicted to the draconian laws, arguing against reason that they were necessary for the security of the country. Some have even argued that these laws are necessary to ensure Malay domination continued unchallenged. .

Hence many genuine initiatives or reforms were squelched because they infringed upon the party's vested interests.

Malaysia cannot move forward on doublespeak and chicanery. Instead, it requires leadership that is governed by a courageous heart and a clear mind. Policy ought not to be dictated by fluctuating poll numbers.

Can Najib be that leader?

WAJIB : BERSIH dulu sebelum PRU

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 10:35 AM PDT

2. Demokrasi negara ini sedang 'tenat' apabila kadar kepercayaan rakyat terhadap proses pilihanraya amat rendah, SAMM menyokong usaha telus penambahbaikkan sistem pilihanraya dan mendesak PRU WAJIB hanya boleh diadakan selepas proses penambahbaikan selesai.

SAMM mendokong tuntutan BERSIH2 iaitu

Mahkamah Dapati Utusan Memfitnah Khalid Samad, Zul Kulim Juga Sepatutnya Dinamakan Defenden

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 10:41 AM PDT

Khalid Samad Menang Saman Terhadap Utusan

Mahkamah dapati Utusan bersalah fitnah Khalid Samad

p/s Bagi sesiapa yang disebut tadi nak elak terkena suweh penyapu tu, kenalah hubungi GB, jangan lupa siapkan pengeras sekali. Kalau tak tanggung jer nanti... hehehe

Tunggu, Utusan tetap tumbang, insyaAllah. Saman Mat Sabu menyusul selepas ini.

Ada Apa 594 Batang Penyapu Dipacak Depan Parlimen?

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 04:35 AM PDT

- AFP

Perkasa boss Ibrahim Ali has once again opened his big mouth. He now speaks like he is the Minister of Internal Security, or does he think he is Prime Minister designate? And mind you, Ibrahim Ali is privileged to be seated besides, of all people the Home Minister Hishamuddin himself commenting issues related to internal security and in particular the ISA. Is Hishamuddin acknowledging that Ibrahim Ali is the expert on matters of national security; hence the former need the latter's expert advice? I think Hishamuddin is wrong to have Ibrahim Ali as his 'consultant' for there is many more experience and expert Malaysians on matters of security.

Ibrahim Ali was reported to have said that he wants future detentions without trial to bypass the courts and instead rely on a committee with credible people. He went further to say that national security goes above human rights and freedom of expression. He argued that using the court system (to deal with ISA cases) will take a long time. His statement is in reference to PM Najib's proposal that the ISA will be repealed and to be replaced by two new laws. Hishamuddin thinks that Ibrahim Ali's comment is credible, but I say to the former that I seriously beg to defer.

Look here Ibrahim Ali, what you are suggesting mirrors what a communist regime of old would do to scuttle dissenting voices. Communism is long gone where even the two largest communist nations in the world i.e. Russia and China have opened themselves out to the globalised world. I am not denying that both the countries does not have 'ISA like policies', but what I am saying is that we a nation that was built on democratic principles should move out from any notion of fear of the country being run over by communist-like elements.

I say to Ibrahim Ali that any form of threat (be they communist inspired, racial or religious threats) cannot survive in this country. So do not get 'over drive', excited and paranoid the moment you hear someone say something that sound anti government. And doesn't Ibrahim Ali know that when the people are deprived of their basic rights, poverty prevalent and abuses rampant, this situation becomes more dangerous that a communist threat? Look at what happened to the North African Muslim states of recent times. The people revolted and threw out their government, and do we not want to learn anything from it?

You and I know that the ISA is a colonial legacy meant to defeat the communist threat then. The British saw the need to legislate such punitive laws because there was real physical threat from the MCP and its sympathizers towards the security and safety of the country. With the end of the first Malayan Emergency and the resurgence of the insurgency, the ISA continued to be enforced, and rightly so. But the situation today is so different after the final surrender of the MCP in 1989. What we have today is merely a friction of the real threat faced by us throughout the Malayan Emergency and the period of the Insurgency. Now, even raising religious and racial issues is considered a threat to national security and this demands the ISA to be applied. Words seem to be more dangerous than weapons itself.

I think Ibrahim Ali's comment and proposal is dangerous to the safety and security of the country, and if Hishamuddin does heed to the former's 'advice', I would then ask Hishamuddin to resign and have Ibrahim Ali take over the Home Ministry.

Najib Naik Bas & Berbasikal, Kos Selenggara Kediaman PM & TPM RM49 Juta Belum Berjawab

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 08:36 AM PDT

Ketika Datuk Seri Najib Razak cuba menonjolkan imejnya berjiwa rakyat termasuk 'menaiki bas' dan berbasikal, Perdana Menteri itu masih gagal menjawab kos selenggara kediaman beliau dan timbalannya yang menelan belanja RM50 juta setahun.

Kediaman rasmi Najib dan Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, masing-masing di Sri Perdana dan Seri Satria, dimiliki Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd dan disewa kerajaan Malaysia.

Keadilan Daily melaporkan, menurut Ahli Parlimen Indera Mahkota, Azan Ismail, beliau mempersoalkan mengapa kos selenggara kediaman PM dan TPM menelan belanja jutaan ringgit.

Jika dibuat kos analiss jangka panjang, saya rasa kerajaan rugi," katanya.

-HD

Virtuous circle and vicious circle from Wikipedia

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 06:45 AM PDT

Source: Virtuous circle and vicious circle from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A virtuous circle or a vicious circle (also referred to as virtuous cycle or vicious cycle) is a complex of events that reinforces itself through a feedback loop. A virtuous circle has favorable results, and a vicious circle has detrimental results. A virtuous circle can transform into a vicious circle if eventual negative feedback is ignored.

Both circles are complexes of events with no tendency towards equilibrium (at least in the short run). Both systems of events have feedback loops in which each iteration of the cycle reinforces the first (positive feedback). These cycles will continue in the direction of their momentum until an external factor intervenes and breaks the cycle. The prefix "hyper-" is sometimes used to describe these cycles. The most well known vicious circle is hyperinflation.

Virtuous circle

Economic growth can be seen as a virtuous circle. It
might start with an exogenous factor like technological innovation. As people
get familiar with the new technology, there could be learning
curve effects
and economies of scale. This could lead to
reduced costs and improved production efficiencies. In a competitive market structure,
this will probably result in lower average prices. As prices decrease,
consumption could increase and aggregate output also. Increased levels of output
leads to more learning and scale effects and a new cycle starts. However,
pollution, natural resource depletion and other externalities associated with
uncontrolled economic growth can turn the virtuous cycle into a vicious

Virtuous circle

Vicious circle

Hyperinflation is a spiral of inflation which causes even higher inflation. The
initial exogenous event might be a sudden large increase in international interest rates or a massive
increase in government debt due to excessive
spendings. Whatever the cause, the government could pay down some of its debt by
printing more money (called monetizing the debt). This increase in the money
supply could increase the level of inflation. In an inflationary environment,
people tend to spend their money quickly because they expect its value to
decrease further in the future. They convert their financial assets into
physical assets while their money still has some purchasing power. Often they
will purchase on credit. Because of this, the level of savings
in the country is very low and the government could have problems refinancing
its debt. Its solution could be to print still more money starting another
iteration of the vicious cycle.

Vicious circle

Example in

Virtuous circle

An investment in your employees' ability to provide superior service to
customers can be seen as a virtuous circle. Effort spent in selecting and
training employees and creating a corporate culture in which they are empowered
can lead to increased employee satisfaction and employee competence. This will
probably result in superior service delivery and customer satisfaction. This in
turn will create customer loyalty, improved sales levels, and higher profit
margins. Some of these profits can be reinvested in employee development thereby
initiating another iteration of a virtuous cycle.

Virtuous circle

Vicious circle

A harvesting strategy can be an example of a vicious
circle. Rather than reinvesting in employee development, new product
, and market research, management could decide to harvest their investment by reducing costs then increasing dividends or increasing executive
. The consequence of this could be reduced employee wages, minimal training, an outdated product line, and a failure to
understand the needs of the customer. This will probably result in employee
dissatisfaction, employee incompetence, and high employee turnover. This could
cause poor service delivery, customer dissatisfaction, high customer turnover,
and loss of market share.
Reduced sales and lower profit margins may require
a further reduction in investment thereby initiating another iteration of the
vicious cycle.

Vicious Circles in the Subprime Mortgage Crisis

Vicious Cycles in the Subprime Mortgage

The contemporary subprime
mortgage crisis
is a complex of vicious circles, both in its genesis and in
its manifold outcomes, most notably the late 2000s
. A specific example is the circle related to housing. As housing
prices decline, more homeowners go "underwater", when the market value of a home
drops below the mortgage on it. This provides an incentive to walk away from the
home, increasing defaults and foreclosures. These in turn lower housing values
further, reinforcing the cycle.[1]

The foreclosures reduce the cash flowing into banks and the value of
mortgage-backed securities (MBS) widely held by banks. Banks incur losses and
require additional funds, also called "recapitalization". If banks are not
capitalized sufficiently to lend, economic activity slows and unemployment
increases, which further increases foreclosures.

Economist Nouriel Roubini described the vicious circles
within and across the housing market and financial markets during interviews
with Charlie Rose in
September and October 2008.[2][3][4]

Other examples

Other examples include the poverty cycle and sharecropping. In climate change science,
feedback loops involve positive feedbacks
and negative
that respectively serve to intensify or dampen the effects of global warming.

The ‘vicious cycle’ of brain drain

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 06:36 AM PDT

Source:The Business Star, The 'vicious cycle' of brain drain By FINTAN NG

WE have often heard how brain drain is a vicious cycle and how this cycle has affected Malaysia's current and future growth prospects.

The country, despite seeing a large diaspora in comparison to the population, is a "receiving country" with as many as 2.4 million immigrants according to the World Bank's 2011 Migration and Remittances Factbook.
Of these, some 40% have secondary education while in recent years, some 40% had no formal education at all.

The stock of Indonesian-born immigrants accounted for about 1.4 million,
placing the Indonesia-Malaysia migration corridor among the largest corridors in the world; it's about one third larger than the Malaysia-Singapore corridor.

The stock of Indonesian-born immigrants account for about 1.4 million people, placing the Indonesia- Malaysia migration corridor among the
largest in the world.

Needless to say, the number of low-skilled immigrants depresses the wage
levels while productivity and innovation suffer as well.

"Human capital is the bedrock of the high-income economy," the World Bank
says in the fourth Malaysia Economic Monitor adding that brain drain creates a vicious cycle that may entrap a country into an undesirable equilibrium with low levels of human capital and a large technology gap.

It observes that although other countries in the region have seen a more
rapid increase in their brain drain in the 1990s, the intensity of the brain
drain is high in Malaysia because the "stock of human capital domestically has not grown as fast as elsewhere".

Recruitment specialist Robert Walters' managing director for Singapore and
Malaysia Andrea Ross tells StarBizWeek that although there is an increase
in the number of overseas Malaysians returning, mainly due to family reasons, an equal number of young, well-educated Malaysians leave the country.

"There is definitely a brain drain from Malaysia to locations like Australia,
Hong Kong and Singapore where lifestyle and earning capabilities are different," she says.

The World Bank's statistics show that for every ten skilled Malaysians born
in the country, one of them elects to leave the country. This is double the
world average. If Singapore is included, the estimates of Malaysia's brain drain intensity will double.

Given a narrower skill-base, as proxied by educational attainment (where only a fifth of the workforce have some form of tertiary qualification), the impact of a person leaving should also be higher in Malaysia than elsewhere.

"The low-skill base is inherently related to the challenges Malaysia faces in
its education sector," the World Bank says.

AmResearch Sdn Bhd senior economist Manokaran Mottain says it is encouraging to note that local universities have been churning out larger numbers of graduates over the years.

"But the number needs closer scrutiny. Are we producing the right people for the future, especially in the skilled areas?" he asks.

Manokaran says to compete, the country should seriously reconsider bringing back the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English. "Also, we note the Government's efforts to enhance the quality of graduates via incentives to further their studies. We should have more post-graduates in the future," he says.

Manokaran adds that the lower skill base will have an impact on innovation
and productivity, which is one of the key driving factors of sustained
productivity improvement.

Like his peers, they share the World Bank's views on more deep-seated reforms as laid out in the New Economic Model. Manokaran says "comprehensive reforms are needed in order to improve productivity and inclusiveness.

He says there is a need to raise productivity in order that wages can be
raised in the public and private sectors.

"As people grow accustomed to higher real wages abroad, this may provide
incentives for more to return. A stronger ringgit will also help to boost the
chances," Manokaran says.

Meanwhile, Deloitte Consulting Malaysia executive director Andrew Lee says the erosion of the skill base and the consequent lack of innovation can be seen in investors bypassing the country as "the available labour market is a major deterrent to foreign investment in Malaysia".

The World Bank's most recent investment climate assessment (in 2009) suggests that Malaysia continues to face a tight labour market for skills and that this is affecting firm productivity.

In a 2007 survey of Malaysian manufacturing firms, the average time spent to recruit a professional worker was reported to be a lengthy period of six weeks with the situation deteriorating slightly from 2002, the date of the previous investment climate assessment.

"From a cross-country perspective, it takes a long time in Malaysia to hire a
skilled technician and there is also greater uncertainty about how long it
takes," the World Bank says.

"The country is not yet ready to attract the types of sophisticated
knowledge-based foreign direct investment (FDI) further up the value chain," Lee observes.

This is despite the fact that the Government is making efforts in developing
local industries, which will be a key factor in cementing demand for skilled
labour and creating development opportunities which were previously

Lee says at the same time, assembly-type low tech FDIs now find the
Philippines a more attractive investment destination than Malaysia, which is
still nurturing investments from conventional developed countries that are
expected to slow down on foreign investments.

Robert Walters country manager for Malaysia Sally Raj says factors such as
tax, salaries, infrastructure and meritocracy have to be considered as well to
draw Malaysians back to the country.

"We also noticed a trend of returning Malaysians, notably from banks in the
Middle East. Three years ago, Dubai was one of the hot spots where many
professionals flocked to build their careers, but we're gradually seeing a
return of these candidates, both to Malaysia and neighbouring countries," she adds.

Marshanda Kekal Bertudung Setelah Bergelar Isteri

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 06:26 AM PDT

Menegak Agama Membela Bangsa: Sejarah perjuangan kemerdekaan PAS

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 03:05 AM PDT

- Prof Zulkifli Mohamad

Menegak Agama Membela Bangsa: Perjuangan PAS 1951-1970
Oleh Dr Ismail Said
Buku Harakah, 2011.

Surfin' USA - A Canine Experience

Baby boombers would be familiar with the Beach Boys - an American rock band, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California.

According to Wikipedia, "the group was initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Managed by the Wilsons' father Murry, The Beach Boys signed to Capitol Records in 1962. The band's early music gained popularity across the United States for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance. By the mid 1960s, leader Brian Wilson's growing creative ambition and songwriting ability would dominate the group's musical direction. The primarily Brian-composed Pet Sounds album and "Good Vibrations" single (both released in 1966) featured a complex, intricate and multi-layered sound that was a far cry from the simple surf rock of The Beach Boys' early years." Noraniza Selamat Dinikahkan Dengan Jeffri

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 02:46 AM PDT

-hm
