Did Najib Miscalculate When To Hold the Next GE?

Did Najib Miscalculate When To Hold the Next GE?

Did Najib Miscalculate When To Hold the Next GE?

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 09:06 AM PST

For the past six months or so, most of us had been bracing ourselves for the announcement of the 13th General Elections which many expected on 11th November (11.11.11). In fact, some speculated that the Parliament would be dissolved on 11th November (after the PM's return from the haj) and then for the GE to be held some time in December, speculated to be 10th Dec.

That, however, did not happen, and it appears that the GE may be held around March or April next year instead.

I am of the opinion that this could be a serious miscalculation.

First of all, it is common knowledge that Najib is going to face a lot of resistance from within Umno. Clearly, if he holds the GE now he can 'clean up' Umno and get rid of his 'threats'. With the delay in holding the next GE, he is now giving them more time to consolidate and to strengthen their moves against him.

Secondly, most PM's in the past including Dr Mahathir and Pak Lah held the GE within six months of taking office to legitimise their position. Contrastingly, Najib has not been elected into office. He is merely a 'caretaker' PM in a sense. On that count, is he a legitimate PM?

Most importantlty, 2012 is going to see more turmoil than even WWII. The year 2012 is going to be the beginning of the end of the world as we know it, economically and socially speaking. The two greatest Pre-Christian empires of 2,000 years ago, Italy and Greece, have already fallen. What awaits us?

Moving northwards, we can see how the British Empire where the sun never sets has seen the sun setting long ago.

Currently, the US Dollar is not even worth the paper it is printed on. It is only of value as long as you need to buy oil because the USD is the currency accepted for deals. If not, no one would want the US Dollar.

Thus, it can be seen that the US is as good as dead. The only difference is that it is not pronounced dead, not until the USD becomes demonitised, so to speak.

One reason Libya was attacked and occupied is because Gaddafi wanted to 'unpeg' the sale of oil from the USD.  In reality, if he had succeeded,  the US would be history. By a twist of fate, ow Gaddafi is history and the USD is still in demand.

With all that is happening, it appears that Europe is possibly facing WW3. Unlike the previous world wars,  WW3 is not a military war but an economic war. The question at the tip of our tongues is whether Europe will survive this war. Maybe yes and maybe no. And the chance of no is bigger than the chance of yes.

Asia is but a small cog in the entire machinery. If Europe sneezes, countries like Malaysia will catch a cold.

And we are already showing some symptoms.

Can Malaysia survive if Europe crashes?

Some surmise that Pakatan is not ready for an election. It is apparent to many that Pakatan still has many unresolved issues which may not be resolved even if given another year.

Realistically, we all know that BN is not without issues either. And that is why BN is worried and its leaders do not want to call for a GE now.

If Najib had called for the GE to be held next month, Pakatan would have been caught with their pants down!!! With this delay, BN has given Pakatan a new breath of life and a reprieve to resolve all their issues.

But that is looking at things internally. You can solve your internal problems. More worrying is the alarming fact that there are external factors in this situation which are beyond your control. And this is what Najib may be faced with at the moment.

THIS ARTICLE ADB's Nag on the Asia Hit from the Euro Crisis (The Wall Street Journal) demonstrates what Najib may have to face in 2012, when he decides to hold the GE then.

The Economic Times HERE carried an article by Greenback Forex Services which believe currencies may move in all directions till European debt crisis looms.

In the New Zealand Herald today, Lagarde warns that no country immune to euro crisis!

The Business Recorder HERE argues that Europe's debt crisis may shake corporate America!

The Global Nation Inquirer reported: "We are all directly affected by the crisis in Europe," US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said after hosting a meeting of finance ministers of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum.

Why does Italy's economy matter so much to the U.S?

"The actual balance sheets of most U.S. banks are scarier than anything Stephen King ever dreamed up. So when those calls come in ... well, you remember Lehman Brothers? Lehman is to this as a firecracker is to a stick of dynamite." READ MORE HERE.

The next question is how will the euro crisis sink your Asia fund? According to The Telegraph:

Is the euro typhoon heading for Asia? Figures from the Investment Management Association (IMA) show that private investors have put their faith in the China, India and their environs for some time now, but warnings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggest that the Eastern promise might be waning thanks to the euro turmoil.

Over the past five years, according to IMABurdett, the co-head of Thames River's Multi-Capital fund.

However, he acknowledged that these markets were not likely to emerge unscathed from the current problems in the Euro zone. Having already underperformed over the past year, he said Asian markets would "move with global growth perceptions whether we like it or not".
This link opines that Asia May Get Affected As Euro Zone Debt Crisis Worsens!

Last week, Bloomberg reported:  "U.S. banks increased sales of insurance against credit losses to holders of Greek, Portuguese, Irish, Spanish and Italian debt in the first half of 2011, boosting the risk of payouts in the event of defaults."

Obviously, the world is now a globalised and borderless world. It is virtually impossible for any country to work or exist in isolation. The painful truth is that every country's fortunes is tied to one another. When one goes down, it will ultimately drag the others down as well.

Why do you think the European countries are trying to prevent Greece and Italy from going down? Simply because if they go down,  they will suck the others down. Most alarmingly, Europe will suck the US down and in turn the Asian countries down as well.

Malaysia is not important in the scheme of things. Malaysia can be sacrificed for the greater need to Europe and the West. And it may just come to that.

Can you remember how Asia and even Australia was sacrificed during WWII? Europe came first in decisions. Asia was left to fend for itself. And then Australia discovered that Churchill had abandoned them to Japan because they needed to focus on Europe. The rest is history that I hope will not be repeated!

The good news is, Malaysia could most probably be hit bad and get sucked in by the Euro crisis that would result in BN losing the GE. The bad news is, even if Pakatan takes over they would be taking over a bankrupt nation like what happened in Britain recently/

The Malay proverb is: menang sorak, kampung tergadai. When translated, it means you win the cheering but end up in serious debt.

We saw this is the mid-1980s. Malaysia had to cancel all its projects because the world faced a recession (remember 'Black Monday'?) and Malaysia had no reserves. Singapore, on the other hand, accelerated and brought forward all its (future) projects and spent its way out of the recession. Of course, you can do this if you have huge cash reserves like Singapore. If not, you will have to cancel all your projects like Malaysia. This was what happened about 25 years ago. And will this happen again?

Personally, I would not want to be in the shoes of the government that takes over from BN come the next GE. We would probably see what is happening in the UK today in our own backyard.Because of that, the Conservative-LibDem coalition is probably going to be a one-term government and Labour will be back in power the next GE and will probably stay on for at least 10 or 15 years to come. Get my drift?

This is my thesis only and there is no right or wrong but merely my forecast of what MAY happen but with a high level of probability.

What do you think? I would love to hear your views!

Shooting down MAS and AirAsia

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 08:33 AM PST

Something is wrong somewhere. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines issue flares again and this time the Umno MPs slammed Khazanah chief Azman Mokhtar and AirAsia's Tony Fernandes over 'a cahoot to cheat the rakyat' over the share swap deal.

Many have supported the 'merger' while not few opposed it on the ground that Airasia, being a private-owned airline, will dominate one of the government's largest GLC. If the swap deal was everything proper, there won't be any opposition.

And what matters most now is for full investigation be conducted on the deal, including the brains behind such a 'complicated and intriguing' business agreement.

The Dewan Rakyat felt the heat yesterday when Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin called on 'Amok' to be investigated by graftbusters after the state investment agency exchanged 20.5 per cent of the national carrier for a 10 per cent stake in Asia's top-performing budget airline.

"The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must call Tan Sri Azman ... all of them ... if there is any misappropriation, stuff them into jail," the Barisan Nasional (BN) backbenchers deputy chief told Parliament. "How can Khazanah be fooled? Azman Mokhtar, how can he be so stupid, to be 'tuned' by Tony Fernandes. If I was in such a position, I would resign rather than troubling others.

"Maybe they are not stupid. Maybe they get huge profits by squeezing and grabbing money from the public," he said, referring to the AirAsia CEO's company Tune Air which now owns a fifth of MAS.

Sri Gading MP Mohamad Aziz also accused AirAsia of 'clearly cheating the public and now trying to cheat MAS'.

"If this kind of man (Fernandes) can control us, God forgive us," he said while debating Budget 2012.

Accusing the government of being scared with Fernandes, Bung Mokhtar said: "Whatever he wants, we give. He wants to overcharge for excess baggage and suck the blood of poor villagers. Now I hear he has a plan in the future to take over all domestic flights and MAS will only have international flights. If we give this to him, the country will be in ruins. It will be the end of the world for us," he said.

And if the government could not provide a satisfactory answer, it meant that 'government officials colluded with AirAsia and has vested interests'.

The MAS-AirAsia swap has come under fire from both sides of the political divide as well as employees of MAS who believe the deal will affect their careers. The Finance Ministry said earlier this month the deal is being investigated by Bursa Malaysia and the Securities Commission for insider trading despite the swap being agreed on three months ago.

MAS's poor financial performance of late had resulted in the share swap with AirAsia on August 9. This allowed Fernandes to sit on the MAS board, ostensibly to help turn the ailing airline around. However, both airlines have separate advisers.

MAS had announced in August a net loss of RM527 million for the second quarter of 2011 due to higher fuel costs despite recording a better yield and a nine per cent growth in passenger revenue from the same period last year.

This brings total losses in the first half of the year to RM769 million even as the airline said that profit outlook for the second half of the year appears bleak.

Critics have accused the budget carrier's boss of taking advantage of the loss-making national airline to fuel his personal ambitions, the latest being the acquisition of English Premier League club, Queens Park Rangers (QPR).

The national carrier will sponsor QPR's home jersey for the next two seasons, while AirAsia's logo will be emblazoned on the team's away and third kits in a 'multi-million pound' deal.

Fernandes also revealed on Monday a plan to start a new super-premium regional airline in partnership with national carrier Malaysia Airlines.

"Here is another idea that has come out of AirAsia which will create more more value, more jobs and more business. If an idea like this does materialise... it will definitely involve Malaysia Airlines," he told reporters.

Fernandes said the proposed short-haul carrier would cater largely to business travellers, among others, who need to travel across the region quickly. "For me as a traveller, time is very precious. If you can create a product where you do not need to wait one hour before you check in and fly out and Malaysia can be the home of this idea."

KR1M - MYDIN: Pelanduk Dua Serupa [Updated]

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 09:42 AM PST

Ulasan GB

Hairankah kita apabila Mydin membela produk-produk KR1M?

Ketujuh, tindakan kamu Mydin memalukan.

They say one good name deserves another, but in the above case one bad name has enticed another.

Bung Moktar: Shahrizat liabiliti kepada Umno & BN!

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 07:14 AM PST

BN backbenchers deputy chief Bung Moktar Radin mentioned in passing that the cabinet minister responsible for the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) fiasco should resign, during the debate on Transport Minister Kong Chor Har's winding up speech on the Supply Bill 2012 in the Dewan Rakyat today.
bung mokhtar parliament 080708 01
When BN MPs veered into the topic of budget carrier AirAsia's recent share swap deal with Malaysia Airlines, Bung Moktar (left), the Kinabatangan MP, told the House, "My position is very clear. Just like the feedlot issue. I agree that this is not the work of Umno. This is the work of individuals. To me, the person should be responsible. If I was in (the person's) position, I would resign. (The person) is causing problems. Everything the person does, semua musnah (ends up in ruins). Whatever that is not right, we must correct, even if the person is a minister from Umno. Who is the person? If the person is wrong, resigning is better than being a liability to Umno and BN. We must be firm because we administer this country based on justice."

At no point did Bung Moktar mention the minister's name in the House although he did  mention that he was referring to a cabinet minister,

'Resign and apologise'

When contacted by Malaysiakini later in the evening, Bung Moktar confirmed that he was referring to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and said, "She should take responsibility and face the music."

To another question, Bung Moktar said Shahrizat should resign as soon as possible, because the NFC controversy had damaged the reputation of BN and Umno.

Since she was holding government and party positions, an apology to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was also in order, added Bung Mokhtar.

Neverthless, Bung Moktar stressed that he had nothing personal against Shahrizat and that he did not blame Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Noh Omar for the NFC scandal.

At a time when  fellow backbenchers, including Khairy Jamaluddin, are scrambling to control the damage caused by the controversy, Bung Moktar is believed to be the first BN Member of Parliament to have publicly criticised Shahrizat over the matter.

Pemberian "One-Off" Sudah Diagihkan Walaupun Bajet Belum Diluluskan

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 07:35 AM PST

K'jaan dibidas, berbelanja sebelum Bajet dilulus

-mk

Dewan Rakyat Kecoh Pembangkang Bantah Bantuan Sekolah RM100

Yakinlah! Hanya menunggu masa dan ketikanya.

Another problem not settled yet

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 05:30 AM PST

Fuzi sent me a text message last week, asking if it was okay for her to buy reference books for her eldest daughter, Wina, who will be sitting for her SPM next year. Amongst all the children of the PLHIV families under my care, Wina is the one who takes her schooling very seriously. She's the one who asks for tuition, and she's the one who wants those reference books.

I told Fuzi to wait for me to visit them so I could get more details on the subjects Wina is taking. I can probably get used reference books from my friends whose children have sat for their SPM and who no longer have anyone to hand down the books to.

So today, after getting supplies of groceries at a hypermarket, I immediately headed to Fuzi's house. The moment I got to her house & honked, it was her youngest son Iwan who opened the door, smiling as sweetly as ever. He then came out together with his mother to help unload the groceries from my car.

Fuzi's eldest daughter, Wina, 16, and eldest son, Hafiz, 13 were also home. The other 2 children including Ijam, the HIV+ boy, were in school. I brought along with me a bag of scarves given by SN. SN was no longer using those type of scarves and so she gave them to me so I could distribute them to the poor HIV families. Fuzi and Wina were happy to choose a few from the plastic bag.

Anyway, I told Wina I'd try to get the SPM reference books for her. I noted down the subjects she's taking. Although Wina is under our sponsorship programme, no point buying reference books if we can get some for free. Might as well utilise the sponsorship money to cover for her tuition fees.

Fuzi's problem now is that she's still unable to apply for PR status for herself. Earlier on she was told that foreigners married to Malaysians can apply for PR status after 5 years. Fuzi had been staying in Malaysia since she got married 17 years ago. But when she went recently, she was told the rule doesn't apply to widows. She couldn't apply for PR back then when her husband was still alive because he never bothered to register their marriage here (they were married in Narathiwat).

After her husband's death, Fuzi had all sorts of problems trying to get Malaysian identity cards for her children, but that matter finally got settled when someone helped to get her marriage cert finally accepted by the court here. So now the problem of her first 4 children are settled. They have no problem getting their MyKad done.

However, her youngest boy, Iwan, was born out of a rape case, after the death of Fuzi's husband. With Fuzi's status still as a non citizen, and father's details unknown, Iwan was classified as non-citizen. Fuzi was hoping that if she could get herself the PR status, then maybe she could apply to get Iwan as a Malaysian citizen. She was hopeful earlier, but with the latest development, she's back to square one.

Iwan is 5 years old. Next year he will be going to a nearby kindergarten. The problem will arise when he needs to start schooling in 2013. If he still remains as a non-citizen, he may have problems getting into a government school. I was told he will need to apply to the state education dept and pay some additional fees as a foreign student.

There's still another year to go. I hope something can be done before 2013 comes…

Mahasiswa Bidas Naib Canselor UiTM, Cakap Lain Buat Lain

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 05:16 AM PST

Politik pelajar: Jangan cakap lain, buat lain, kata KAMI

"Mahasiswa merasakan keterangan naib canselor UiTM bertajuk "Tidak Perlu Pinda AUKU" hanyalah sekadar retorik semata-mata.

"Jangan pula nanti cakap lain tapi buat lain."

Pertandingan pidato politik Piala Perdana Menteri peringkat saringan zon tengah di UiTM, Shah Alam, semalam, dirasmikan Ketua Pergerakan Pemuda Umno Khairy Jamaluddin ).

-mk

DAP is worse than 'that chameleon'

When it comes to Anwar Ibrahim, DAP may batter him for one day before rallying behind him again the very next day. While many call Anwar a chameleon, DAP is nevertheless a six-sided dice for its contradicting stand on the Opposition Leader.

MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong today chided DAP chairman Karpal Singh's support for PKR de facto leader to be the prime minister should the Pakatan alliance take over the Federal Government after the next national poll.

"It should be remembered that when Anwar was planning for his failed Sept 16 takeover of the Federal Government in 2008, Karpal had demanded that Anwar resign as the opposition leader.

"This back-pedalling demonstrates that in order to win Federal administration, DAP will easily switch their position and go against their own principles," Wee said in a statement.

"If an Opposition stalwart like Karpal Singh who wields strong influence among his loyalists can simply change his position to back Anwar as prime minister, this clearly signals that DAP is willing to make any U-turns and go against their own principles just so to woo public support in their aim to wrestle Putrajaya," he said.

Agree. That is what DAP is all about.

Amid it's racism and admitting the lack of Malay support, DAP has made a promise to field more Malay candidates in the next general election. That is impossible. After the late Ahmad Nor, the party has no credible Malay leaders.

Meanwhile, MCA National Organising Secretary Tee Siew Kiong in a separate statement said Karpal's stand on Anwar was only made to deceive the people as their claims were never supported or approved by PAS.

Jenayah Di Kalangan Polis Menjadi-jadi Kerana Menteri KDN Kata Jumlahnya Kecil

Bapa Bob Lokman Persoal JAIS Tahan Anaknya Beri Syarahan Agama

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 02:36 AM PST

-SH

Just when I thought we are fine. On talking terms and all.

I came to realise I am not fine at all.

Why do I still feel the pain when we seem to lost contact?

Why do I feel like I am wasting myself?

Why am I crying myself to sleep every night?

Why do I have to resort to hard liquor to help me sleep?

Yes. Stress is back.

With a whole long string of gastric/mental disorders I gotta handle.

MACC passes cattle condo probe to cops

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 12:43 AM PST

The following article is from Malaysiakini here.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said a complaint on the RM9.8 million condominium bought by a sister company of the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) does not fall under its jurisdiction.

In a statement today, the MACC said the complaint had been scrutinised by its legal and prosecution division which is of the opinion that the matter falls under the Penal Code and not the MACC Act 2009.

The matter has since been referred to the police and the complainant has been informed of the matter. The MACC said the complainant has agreed with the new measure.

NONEAlthough the MACC did not name the complainant, it is believed that it was referring to NGO Jingga 13's leader Fariz Musa who lodged a report last week.

In a statement today, Fariz (middle, in spectacles) said he has been informed by the MACC that the case was being investigated under Section 409 of the Penal Code, for criminal breach of trust.

An offence under this law carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years, whipping and a fine.

Police must act fast

In view of the latest developments, Fariz urged the police to expedite investigations between of the high-profile figures involved and a large sum of public funds involved.

"The National Feedlot project not only failed, but the people's money has been abused," complained Fariz, who is also the former PKR Youth wing deputy chief.

NFC came under scrutiny after the 2010 Auditor-General's Report had described it as "a mess".

Digging deeper, PKR unearth public documents which revealed that NFC's sister-company National Livestock and Meats Corporation (NLMC) had used a portion of a government loan to buy a luxury condominium unit.

The party said that the move was improper for a company which was formed by the government to address Malaysia's deficit in beef supply.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Noh Omar said that the government had no control over how the company used the funds but stressed that there was no improprieties involved.

Also coming to NFC's defence was BN backbencher Khairy Jamaluddin, who said that the condominium purchase was a strategic investment move by NLMC.

He argued that NFC had faced problems and thus delayed beef production to be processed by the NLMC. Since the NLMC had excess funds, investing it would provide solid returns.

The Malaysian Insider also carried a report about the same issue HERE.

It is in times like this that I get very outraged when I think about how Teoh Beng Hock died as a witness in an investigation over an allegation of abuse of a wakil rakyat's allocation of RM 2,400. Teoh Beng Hock died over a meagre RM 2,400. That is the value of life to the MACC! You can read more here.

Pasangan Khalwat Dibebaskan Kerana Kroni Tok Sidang

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 12:35 AM PST

Gambar hiasan.

-hm
