Usaha Kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat mengangkat taraf hidup rakyat Selangor diakui berkesan hinggakan Barisan Nasional meniru program-program yang tersedia, menurut Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
"Ada program jom shopping dengan warga emas. Seratus ringgit kita bagi kepada warga emas, bersama-sama wakil kerajaan negeri membeli-belah di gedung membeli-belah. Mereka rasa seronok dan terbela bila kita bersama-sama mereka."
"Kerajaan Persekutuan pun nak tiru.
-tvsnews

Arriving in a hotel in KL Sentral, Toni Harus Sunny goes to the bar and asks for a pint of draught Guinness. The barman nods and says, "That will be one Ringgit, please, Uncle Toni."
Somewhat taken aback by the recognition, Toni replies, "That's very cheap," and hands over the exact change.
"Well, we try to stay ahead of the competition", says the barman. "And we are serving free pints every Wednesday evening from 6 until 6.15. We have the cheapest draught in Asia."
"That is remarkable value," Tony comments.
The barman than observes, "I see you don't have a glass, so you'll probably need one of ours. That will be 3 Ringgit, please."
Toni scowls, but pays up. He takes his drink and walks towards a seat.
"Ah, you want to sit down?" asks the barman. "That'll be 2 Ringgit for the seat. You could have pre-booked the seat, and it would have cost you a Ringgit only."
The barman then adds, "I think you may to be too big for the seat, sir. Can I ask you to sit in this frame please?"
Toni attempts to sit down but the frame is too small and when he can't squeeze in, he complains, "Nobody would fit in that little frame".
"I'm afraid if you can't fit in the frame, you'll have to pay an extra surcharge of RM 4 for your seat, sir."
Toni swears to himself, but pays up.
"Uncle, I see that you have brought your laptop with you," adds the barman. "And since that wasn't pre-booked either, that will be another 3 Ringgit."
By this time, Toni is so annoyed that he walks back to the bar, slams his drink on the counter, and yells, "This is ridiculous, I want to speak to the manager."
"Ah, I see you want to use the counter," says the barman, "that will be 2 Ringgit please, Uncle."
Toni's face is red with rage. "Do you know who I am?" he asks the barman.
"Of course I do, Uncle. You are the one who wants everybody to fly because you learnt to fly a kite before you could learn to crawl."
"I've had enough, What sort of hotel is this? I come in for a quiet drink and you treat me like this. I insist on speaking to a manager!"
"Here is his e-mail address, or if you wish, you can contact him between 9 and 9.15 every morning on Monday at this toll-free number. Calls are free, until they are answered. Then there is a talking charge of only 10 sen per second provided you use Toon Talk. Using other mobile carriers would incur our normal charges of 30 sen per second."
"I will never use this bar again."
"That's OK Uncle, but remember, we are the only bar in Asia selling pints for one Ringgit. So now everyone - including you and anyone from the Silver State - can drink. "
Part 2: Toni has to wee-wee at the pub's toilet
Part 3: Toni wants tidbits to go with his pinta
Part 4: Toni wants to pay his bill by credit card
Thanks to Kassim S.A. who sent this to me. I am presuming that he is the one who wrote this delightful piece. Looking forward to more of his classy wit and humor!

The Italo-Turkish war was fought from September 1911 through October 1912 in what is now Libya. The American Jewish Yearbook roundup of the year's events has a number of entries that shows that the Jews of Palestine solidly supported the Ottoman war effort.
October 15, 1911:
The Anglo-Palestine Bank is the forerunner of the current Bank Leumi.
November 11 and 13:
And here is the really interesting entry, from December 8, 1911:
That's right - the very first Magen David Adom was organized for the purpose of helping mostly Muslim soldiers! (There were some Jewish soldiers in the Ottoman army, and in March the first Jewish officer graduated from the Imperial Military Academy.)
The MDA website says that the first Magen Dovid Adom was set up in 1918 in order to help soldiers of the Jewish Legion and was disbanded after the war. But apparently the first organization to use that name was set up seven years earlier.
While on the subject of the Yearbook, the September 23rd entry is notable:
Also, Arabs killed three Jews and wounded seven on February 3. 1912, showing once again that Arabs attacked Jews way before the fatal events of 1920, 1921 and 1929. Hat tip:Elder of Ziyon

-tvsnews

"Girl gang who kicked woman in the head while yelling 'kill the white slag' freed after judge hears 'they weren't used to drinking because they're Muslims'," by Andy Dolan and Katherine Faulkner for the Daily Mail, December 6 2011.
A gang of Muslim women who attacked a passer-by in a city centre walked free from court after a judge heard they were 'not used to being drunk' because of their religion. The group – three sisters and a cousin – allegedly screamed 'kill the white slag' as they set upon Rhea Page as she waited for a taxi with her boyfriend.Hat tip: Jihad Watch and Eye On the World.

When I called Aini last week to ask her when I could take her children for their back-school-shopping, I was told the boys followed their uncle to KL and would only be back over the weekend. And since her appointment at the hospital was on Tuesday, I told her I'd fetch her and her kids on Wednesday afternoon.
Today after my lunch and prayer, off I went to fetch them. This time, only 2 out of Aini's 3 kids came along. Her eldest daughter was home when I went to fetch them today, but this time she didn't follow us as she has one more SPVM paper to sit for tomorrow.
So it was just me, Aini and her 2 boys. The boys, going into forms 1 and 3 respectively, were rather shy. Unlike the other kids who'd grab the opportunity to get themselves everything new, these 2 boys would only take the things they felt they really needed. From the 3 families I've taken shopping so far, these 2 took the least stationeries. As a matter of fact, according to Aini, the older boy asked her earlier, "Apasal makcik Afizah pulak yang tolong belikan barang sekolah? Seganlah mak…" Aini just told him that we're an NGO helping out single mothers.
NGO for single mothers? You see, none of Aini's family members know that Aini and her late husband were HIV+. Her children knows she has health problems, but since Aini has various ailments including kidney problems, they never question her. And since I know the children aren't aware of their mother's HIV status, I never mention the word when they are around. Aini would still tell me about her appointments at the hospital etc, but without ever mentioning HIV or AIDS.
The family now survives on welfare aid of RM300 a month. Previously, Aini used to babysit a neighbour's child and got paid RM200 per month, but according to her, the child's mother had quit her job and no longer sends the child to Aini. So, RM200 less income for Aini now. She still needs all the help she can get.
Her eldest daughter plans to get a temporary job after her SPVM. I asked Aini if her daughter had any courses in particular she's interested to pursue once results are out. I was told she's very much interested in tourism management.
So I got home and surfed the net to find out more about the available courses and colleges. Hmmm…. there's one in Ipoh which offers the course as well. I just hope she will at least get the minimum required results to take up the course.

On Dec. 7, 1941, it wasn't apparent that Japan had already lost the war. Just before 8:00 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941, the first of two waves of attacking aircraft swept over Pearl Harbor. Barely 15 minutes later the most powerful battleships of the mighty U.S. Pacific Fleet were either sunk or burning wrecks. The California was half submerged, with her keel lying in the harbor's mud. Nearby, the West Virginia had her port side torn open. Her twisted metal was burning, but for now she was still afloat. Two other ships, the Tennessee and the Maryland, were battered, but in better shape than their sisters. Beside them, the Oklahoma had been struck by a barrage of torpedoes and capsized. The U.S.S. Nevada was the only battleship to get underway that morning, but she was damaged and had run up onto the beach. The worst fate was suffered by the U.S.S. Arizona, which blew up and sank, taking over 1,000 of her crew with her.
The following day, President Roosevelt went before Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Japan. At the time, he could not have known that the attack on Pearl Harbor was only the beginning of a Japanese offensive that would conquer most of the Western Pacific. Wake Island fell two weeks later, after a truly heroic stand, and only five months after Pearl Harbor the half-starved "battling bastards of Bataan" also surrendered. Fortress Corregidor, in Manila Harbor, withstood a brutal siege for another month before it too fell, but only after the soldiers of the 4th Infantry Regiment fought off several attacks in hand-to-hand combat. By the time Corregidor was lost, 120,000 British soldiers had already surrendered Singapore to an inferior Japanese force. Furthermore, the British Army in Burma was in full retreat toward the Indian border. Capping this run of victories, the Japanese seized New Guinea and Indonesia and launched devastating air raids on northern Australia.
In those dark first months after the Pearl Harbor disaster, it was not apparent to many that Japan had already lost the war. For, despite sinking much of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the Japanese had missed a couple of crucial targets. Foremost among these were the huge oil-storage facilities on Oahu. Their loss would have delayed the American counterattack in the Pacific by as much as a year. One can only imagine how much more costly the conquests of Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa would have been had the Japanese had another year to fortify them. Just as important as the oil facilities were the American aircraft carriers, which were at sea when the Japanese attacked. The first of them to return, the Enterprise, sailed into Pearl Harbor the day after the attack. Surveying the wreckage from the bridge, Adm. William Halsey could not hide his dismay and anger. When asked later about how America would recover, Halsey replied, "When this war is over the Japanese language will be spoken only in hell." America had found the first of its fighting admirals.

At Opana Point Radar Station, set on the highest point on the island of Oahu, two young army privates noticed what looked to be a huge grouping of planes headed for the island. A call was placed around 7:00 a.m. to Lt. Kermit Tyle, who was the morning duty officer, informing him of "many planes." Tyler, thinking the two were seeing a squadron of American B-17s due in that morning, told them to forget about it. They turned off the radar and went to breakfast. An earlier radar "blip" had also been ignored.
A private pilot was up for a quiet and leisurely flight over Honolulu early that morning. Ray Buduick, a lawyer, expected to have the airspace all to himself and his 17-year-old son, Martin. Shortly after takeoff, he realized that his expectations were wrong. All of a sudden, the skies over the island were filled with hundreds of airplanes. "A private plane owner reported he was given a salute of machine-gun bullets by the Japanese planes. His craft was damaged but he managed to land."
A female flight instructor was also aloft, giving a lesson, when she was overwhelmed with hundreds of planes bearing a red flaming ball.
A squadron of Japanese fighter planes, being faster than the bombers, arrived at Oahu at 7:30 and orbited the island for 25 minutes while they waited for the slower planes to catch up.
On a beach in Santa Monica, a group of sun worshipers was out early playing volleyball when one of them heard something over the radio and tried to catch the attention of the others who were uninterested at the moment in anything other than the outcome of their morning match.
The first wave of 183 planes, including dive bombers and torpedo planes on approach to Oahu, continued unmolested and basically undetected. They'd been transported in secret since November 26, at 0900, having departed their home waters of Tankan Bay. The six carriers, Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku, could deploy hundreds of war planes. They were under the orders of the fleet commander, Isoroku Yamamoto, and the command of Chuichi Nagumo. The massive fleet halted in mid-ocean to refuel on December 3. The standing order was radio silence and, if not recalled by Tokyo, to attack.
As they flew over the island, on their approach from the north, over the sugar cane and pineapple fields, they saw no puffs of antiaircraft black smoke in the sky, no airplanes rising to meet their challenge. Realizing they had succeeded in their audacious sneak attack on the American fleet, the code indicating their achievement was transmitted: "Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!"
"Tora! Tora! Tora!"
Along the Waikiki beach, some early morning fishermen were out. "Downtown nothing stirred save an occasional bus." Then came the Japanese planes. "They whined over Waikiki, over the candy pink bulk of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel."
A commercial liner just making port from San Francisco slipped into the harbor at Honolulu. Thinking themselves lucky to be witnessing naval war games, what with the planes diving overhead and all the puffs of black and white smoke, "scores of delighted passengers crowding the deck remarked that it was mighty fine of the United States Navy, timing it so nicely with their arrival."
Initial reports out of Hawaii were light. The first bulletin went out over the local airwaves, garbled, not from a military source or official government spokesman, but from a broadcast personality, Webley Edwards, who hosted the popular radio show Hawaii Calls on CBS, which was heard all over the mainland.

The "Arab Spring" and the treason of the intellectuals. Feb. 18, 2011, marked the triumphal return to Cairo of the Muslim Brotherhood's "spiritual guide," Yusuf al-Qaradawi, after years of exile. His public reemergence in Egypt was sanctioned by the nation's provisional military rulers. Qaradawi's own words, as well as the images and actions that accompanied him during his return, should have shattered the myth that the turmoil leading to President Mubarak's resignation augured the emergence of a modern, democratic Egyptian society devoted to Western conceptions of individual liberty and equality before the law.
But unlike the Middle East Media Research Institute, and my colleague al-Mutarjim (whose translation follows), mainstream-media outlets failed to report that Qaradawi issued a clarion call for the jihad reconquest of Jerusalem. Likewise, they failed to predict the events of the subsequent ten months, including the open ascendancy of the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates across North Africa and the entire Middle East. Instead, as late as August 2011, Hoover Institution fellow Fouad Ajami was writing in the Wall Street Journal that the uprisings were "the Arabs' 1989, their supreme moment of historical agency," and that "for once the 'Arab Street' was not gripped by anti-Zionism and anti-Americanism, for once it wasn't looking beyond its geography for alien demons."
Qaradawi's pronouncement, made during his Tahrir Square Friday khutbah (sermon), was met with thunderous applause. This is what he said:
THE MEDIA VS. REALITY
John Esposito, who heads the lavishly Saudi-funded Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, is the doyen of American academic apologists for jihadism. Esposito opined in a Fall 2003 Boston Review essay that Qaradawi embodied a "reformist interpretation of Islam and its relationship to democracy, pluralism, and human rights."
Nearly a decade later, Esposito's assessment of Qaradawi has been regurgitated by both the mainstream media and the new generation of academics these journalists seek out for comment. Witness the New York Times coverage of Qaradawi's Tahrir Square oration. We are told that the cleric's speech "struck themes of democracy and pluralism, long hallmarks of his writing and preaching," and that "scholars who have studied his work say Sheik Qaradawi has long argued that Islamic law supports the idea of a pluralistic, multiparty, civil democracy."
To the Times's credit, the story also acknowledges that Qaradawi has openly endorsed violence against both Israeli Jews and American troops in Iraq. But it then quotes an "academic Qaradawi expert," Notre Dame professor Imad Shahin, who defends these views: "You call it violence; I call it resistance."

Manakala ketiga tiga anaknya iaitu Wan Shainur Izmir, 31, (Pengarah Eksekutif) Wan Shahinur Izran, 27 (Ketua pegawai eksekutif) dan Wan Izzana Fatimah, 25, (pengarah) memperoleh pendapatan RM35,000 hingga RM45,000 sebulan.
-HD

Polis tak pernah soal kami, kata pemimpin PKR
6:45PM Dis 7, 2011
Polis masih belum menyoal beberapa pemimpin utama Pakatan Rakyat berhubung pendedahan mereka mengenai dakwaan penyelewengan dana oleh projek ternakan lembu, Perbadanan Fidlot Kebangsaan (NFC).

The family went up Penang Hill recently when my daughter came back from Kuala Lumpur for the weekend. Had always wanted to go up the hill with the whole family to experience the new funicular train ride together, so this was the perfect opportunity for all of us. I think the children were not disappointed with the ride or with the lunch at the David Brown Restaurant (the old tea kiosk at the summit).
Here are the videos I took of the train journey and they should be seen in sequence. First, the ride up to the summit. Always important to occupy the front cabin next to the driver for the best view.
Now, having seen how it's like to go up at 30kph non-stop, here is the corresponding trip down the hill. Again for the best view, take the back cabin as you go down. But be ready for the exhilarating roller-coaster ride, the only one and the longest one in Penang! Best to hang on to your seats at the middle station.

Char koay teow is an institution by itself in Penang. Every decent kopitiam, market, food court and pasar malam (night market) will have at least one stall dishing out greasy portions of this staple to diners from early morning till late night. Char koay teow stalls can easily be identified by the clanging of frying ladles against wok, the unmistakeable aroma and sometimes spicy fumes that could choke nostrils to the extent of inducing bouts of sneezing and coughing.
The basic ingredients are koay teow (flat rice flour noodles), taugeh (bean sprouts), heh (prawns), hum (cockles), koo chai (chives), lap cheong (Chinese waxed sausage), hiam cheo cheoh (chili paste) and eggs. What makes one char koay teow unique from another is the sauce and the add-ons such as crab meat, extra large prawns and mantis prawns. I must say that I am not a fan of extra large prawns in my char koay teow, preferring medium sized prawns with a generous portion of koay teow.
The hawkers have their own secret recipes for the sauce which they jealously guard from their peers. It will take more than a generous amount of money and persuasions, gentle or otherwise, to convince them to part with that secret. Apparently, from what I gathered from years of eating char koay teow, the sauce contains a blend of light soya sauce and fish sauce, among others.
Having said that, the clincher for an irresistible plate of char koay teow is, undoubtedly, how well the hawker is able to control the heat in the wok, which the Chinese calls "tiah khee" or "wok hei", meaning "Qi of the wok". Too much and everything in the wok becomes charred; too little will leave the dish with a "half-cooked" essence. Getting the wok to that right temperature is a skill that takes years of practice to perfect.
When I was growing up at Jalan Terengganu in Penang, I used to patronise the char koay teow hawker near the small roundabout at Caunter Hall. It was just down the road from where I lived. We all called him Ah Beng although we never knew for sure if that was his real name.
Ah Beng operated from a tricycle cart parked on the pavement. He used charcoal fire which is believed to make the koay teow more fragrant. Whenever he wanted a bigger flame he would tug on a cord to manually spin a small fan that fed more air into the mouth of the stove, and as a result stirred up sparks and embers that added more drama to his frying antics.
Those days, one could bring an egg or two from home to be added to the koay teow without extra charge even though the hawkers had eggs by the trayful at their stalls. That was exactly what I used to do then to get 20 sen off for a plate of Ah Beng's char koay teow. Try that now and the hawkers would give you dirty looks and may even refuse to serve you.
I have never had a liking for cockles and chives. My usual order would be "mai hum mai koo chai". And Ah Beng was always generous with bak eu pok (crispy pork lard) which made it even more palatable. There was little space to sit and enjoy his char koay teow where he plied his trade. I usually ordered take away. He would wrap them in used newspaper lined with a piece of banana leaf.
It has been more than two decades since I last had a taste of Ah Beng's char koay teow. One day, he just did not open for business. Rumour swirled around on the reasons of his sudden disappearance. I was more concerned with not being able to get char koay teow that I grew up eating anymore. I have since moved on to appreciate char koay teow from other stalls. Like they say, the first is the best. No other char koay teow in Penang can quite compare to Ah Beng's charcoal fired char koay teow stirred in with an egg brought from home. That was simply delicious beyond words.
