-SH

Yellow Penang Chung Ling High School

Yellow Penang Chung Ling High School – Back to my high school last weekend and surprised to see that the make over of the front school facade has done. They have repainted the school yellow colour! It's the bright yellow colour. Looking weird, very weird, but somehow, cool I guess.

It'd been very long time that I didn't visit my high school. I miss it quite a lot actually. 2012, this is my third year after leaving high school already. I went there to visit my Leo Club friends where the school was having the annual CCA Open Day.

The school was beige in colour back then, I wonder who suggest yellow colour. A little information is that yellow colour is one of the colour in Chung Ling High School's emblem.

Random #1: The police cadet so serious.

Random #2: LCD screens are everywhere in school!

Random #2.1: Oooo, so it's Samsung.

Random #3: Look disgusting, but we like! Chung Ling-style fried egg.

Random #4: The stand of the motorcycle sunken into the tar road. WOW.

Memang Binatanglah "Lembu-lembu" Tu, Belanja Kad Kredit NFC Lebih 1/2 Juta

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 08:43 AM PST

Katanya, tindakan "membekukan aset NFC" sepatutnya bermakna:

  • Sebarang perbelanjaan selain dari membayar gaji pekerja-pekerja yang bertugas dalam operasi penternakan lembu (seperti yang dimandatkan di dalam perjanjian pembiayaan oleh kerajaan) perlu dibekukan;

  • Pengurusan sedia ada yang terdiri dari kaum keluarga Shahrizat tidak dibenarkan membuat sebarang keputusan bersabit operasi, kewangan, sumber manusia dan keputusan-keputusan penting lain;

  • Sebarang pemindahan wang keluar dari NFC, termasuk pembayaran gaji dan perbelanjaan syarikat-syarikat lain yang dimiliki oleh keluarga Shahrizat perlu dihentikan serta-merta;

-mk

Maxis One Club: The day I got my free HTC Desire!

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 08:53 AM PST

I went to Maxis KLCC. Almost immediately I was served by an agent named Alex who was very helpful.
Frankly, I was quite impressed by the service provided by this agent. Maxis, take note!

Ok, this was the FREE HTC phone. I must admit I was happy (still happy until today) that I didn't have to pay a single sen for this phone. If I wanted the SE Xperia Arc or Samsung Nexus, I only had to pay like RM200 for the former and also for latter (if I remember correctly!). Neverthless. I just didn't have the budget for neither SE nor Samsung. So, I chose the best FREE phone - the HTC Desire S!

Nicely wrapped with a plastic cover with a message.
It says, 'Important...To prevent damage, do not apply excessive pressure to the screen or device case. Please remove the phone from your trouser pockets before sitting down...'
Frankly, reading this first message didn't give me a good impression of the phone - made it sound like the phone was freaking fragile. On the plus side, I thought HTC was thoughtful enough to give a preemptive warning to its users.

The guide at the back of the plastic cover shows you how to open the cover, take the new battery out, insert the SIM card and close back the cover. Four easy steps but not so easy actually.
I struggled at the last step.
Somehow, the cover just did not slide snugly back into the case no matter how hard I tried.
After a few failed attempts, I finally covered the phone securely!

On mak angkat mode for a day…

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 05:56 AM PST

After running my errands last Saturday, I realised there were 2 missed calls on handphone – both coming from Sofie. I suspected it had something to do with Azman's culinary school as the lady from the school did mention earlier that the session for new students would probably start in mid Jan. True enough, when I called Sofie, I was told that Azman had just received a call from a lady asking him to report to the school on Monday.

Sofie asked how to go about as neither she nor Azman were familiar with Ipoh (except the hospital). I told Azman to take the bus to Ipoh – I'd fetch him from the bus station and send him to the culinary school. I did suggest to Sofie that maybe she too could come along so she could see the place herself, but after giving it some thought, Sofie felt she shouldn't. She needed to send/fetch her 2 younger children to/from school. And if she came to Ipoh together with Azman, it would mean no nasi lemak business aka no income for the day. For someone who doesn't earn much, missing out on a day's sale of about RM30 to RM40 is a lot.

Azman promised to call me once the bus was nearing the bus station. He needed to go to the bank first to arrange for an ATM card and immediately after that's done, he'd get on the bus to Ipoh.

I got to the bus station at about 10.25 am, and the bus Azman was on, arrived 5 minutes later. Immediately I brought him straight to the culinary school, in fact our timing was just nice. We didn't have to wait long for the 1 hour briefing session starting at 11 am given by one of the management personnel. I am glad I attended the session, it opened my eyes to the wide career prospects for the students once they obtained their certificates. As a matter of fact, they could go on to diploma level if they performed well. I sat beside Azman during the briefing and I noticed he paid attention throughout. Obviously this is where his interest lies. I doubt he'd be paying attention in class had I forced him to continue schooling in form 4. He'd probably ponteng 3 out of the 5 days each week in school…

After the briefing, those who needed hostel accommodation were brought to the hostel. Students would need to pay RM150 per month for hostel, and since they'd be getting a fixed monthly allowance under the Tabung Kemahiran, they can use their allowance to pay for the hostel fee. Food however, is not inclusive.

Parents were allowed into the hostel today since it was registration day, and so yes, I did get to see Azman's dorm. There were 8 beds in the dorm. One good thing is that there is a kitchen where the students are allowed to cook. Azman prefers to cook rather than buy out every day.

Anyway, there were quite a number of things Azman still needed to buy. He came today wearing the pair of shoes bought when I brought him shopping 2 weeks ago, but he didn't bring along any slippers. He can't be wearing the shoes for games, and definitely not to go to the toilet! He also needed pillow, bedsheet, trackbottom, sports shoes, necktie (the dress code for Mondays is smart-dressed, including neckties for the boys), socks (the only pair he brought was the one he was wearing & when he took off his shoes to enter his dorm, I noticed his socks had one big whole).

There were more induction sessions after 2 pm for the students, and I didn't think there was enough time for me to bring him shopping for all those stuff during lunch break, so I just brought him to a nearby minimarket to buy a pair of slippers and a pail. I told him I'd come back after asar so I could bring him out to buy all the other necessities.

After zohor, I decided to buy some of the stuff first – the ones that didn't require size measurements. Besides, I know Azman well enough to know that he's not fussy in terms of colour or patterns, so I bought the pillow, bedsheet/pillowcase, blanket, socks and a necktie. That way, when I brought Azman out later, we didn't have to spend so much time shopping.

When I went to fetch Azman at the hostel later, 2 of his new friends wanted to come along. The 2 boys needed to buy some stationeries and being from outstation like Azman, they too weren't familiar with the area yet. So yep, no problem, I took them along.

Just like when I brought him shopping 2 weeks ago, shopping with Azman had always been easy. He's not fussy, and knowing that if it was his mother who had to pay, he wouldn't have most of the things anyway, Azman would usually just agree with whatever that I suggested. So we bought him a pair of trackbottom, a pair of shoes and some stationeries.

Only one thing is not settled yet. Apparently for the monthly allowance, he'd need to have an account with a particular bank. The one he has right now is from another bank. Being only 16 this year, he'd need his guardian to come along with him when he applies to open up an account with the bank. Knowing it would be troublesome for his mother to come all the way to Ipoh to open up the bank account, Azman confided with the officer at the culinary school. The officer said she'd try to call the bank to ask if I could be the one accompanying Azman for the opening of bank account. But then I figured, since there was mention that the school will be closed for the whole week next week, might as well Azman open up the account at his hometown, where it wouldn't be too troublesome for Sofie to go to the bank with him.

After being on mak angkat mode for the day, I noticed Azman seemed eager and excited this time around. He promised me he'd make full use of the opportunity given to him. I truly hope he will try his very best to prove that my suggestion to send him to the culinary school was right.

Come on Azman, show us what you're made of…

GEORGE TOWN: The inner city was transformed into a fairyland of lights as 2,400 bright red lanterns were lit up for the first time this year.

The lanterns that adorn over half a dozen roads surrounding Armenian Street, were put up in conjunction with the upcoming annual Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng stood under an arch between two towering golden dragons to flip a switch and officiate the lighting ceremony.

Together with members of the cultural and heritage celebration's organising committee, Lim then took a short walk around the heritage enclave to get a closer look at the festive decorations.

Organising committee secretary Loh Boon Huan said the lanterns would be lit every night until Chap Goh Meh — the 15th and final day of Chinese New Year that falls on Feb 6.

On a related issue, Lim, who was accompanied by state executive councillors Chow Kon Yeow and Wong Hon Wai, said the re-tarring of Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling was postponed to after the Chinese New Year.

"The work was scheduled for January, but because of the inconvenience that it will cause, the state government has decided to postpone the job until after the Chinese New Year celebration," Lim said.

In August last year, the state announced that an 800m-stretch of cobblestone on Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling would be re-tarred after numerous complaints from the public about its rough surface.

The Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration is jointly organised by the Penang Chinese Clan Council, Penang Clan Associations Youth Committee and Penang Government.

E&O Hotel and Star Cruises are co-sponsors of the event.

It will run from 3pm to midnight on Jan 29. All are welcome.

White Knights revive abandoned projects- launching of Taman Bukit Erskine

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 06:03 AM PST

As reported in The Star

Colourful fanfare: (From left) Ivory deputy chief operating officer Goh Chin Heng, Loh, Kebun Bunga assemblyman Jason Ong, Wong, Ivory chief operating officer Datuk Ooi Chin Loo and Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik launching the project.

A DEVELOPER is building 554 low medium-cost apartment units along Lebuhraya Halia in Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Currently 30% complete, the 38-storey Taman Bukit Erskine developed by Ivory Villas Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary company of Ivory Properties Group Berhad, is expected to be completed in 2014.

Ivory Properties Group Berhad executive director Ron Loh said each unit with a built-up area of 654sq ft comes with three bedrooms, a bathroom and a washroom.

"Despite being a low-medium cost project, the apartments offer good views," he said in a press conference at Penang Time Square on Friday.

He added that the project was abandoned for 11 years due to the 1997 economic crisis and was revived when Ivory took up the project as a white knight in 2007.

Originally named Fettes Villa, the project was later renamed Mount Erskine Development which consists of The Peak Residences, The Latitude and Taman Bukit Erskine.

Loh said the group had since changed the initial 500sq ft layout plan to 654sq ft and increased the units from 363 to 554.

He also said former purchasers who had paid the deposit in the previous project can opt to purchase the units or get a full refund next year.

"According to a court order, we can only refund the deposit a year after we launch this project.

"So far, 30% of the 363 former purchasers wanted to continue with this project," he said.

State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai who launched the project said that he had contacted Rapid Penang to consider plying the route there.

"They used to ply the route but in 2007, they stopped due to poor response.

"I suggest that the bus company conduct a study on the need to service the route there since the apartments are coming up," he said.

He added that the public could send their feedback to Rapid Penang at rapidcare@rapidpg.com.my.

Wong also said that since 2008, seven abandoned projects including Taman Bukit Erskine had been revived and were at different stages of completion.

The projects are Desa Aman in Paya Terubong, Taman Cemerlang in Bandar Baru Air Itam, Mengkuang Heights and Taman Guar Perahu Indah in Central Seberang Prai, Taman Orkid Indah in North Seberang Prai and Taman Pekatra in South Seberang Prai.

On a related issue, Wong said the request for proposal (RFP) period for the revival of the Majestic Heights project in Paya Terubong ended on Jan 6.

He added that the Malaysia Building Society Berhad and the property liquidator Deloitte Kassim Chan had called for the RFP on Oct 7 last year.

"Phase 2A, 2B and 3A have been abandoned.

"They are going through the submissions by several developers.

"We hope that the phases can be completed soon after being abandoned for more than 10 years," he said.

Some 2,500 low- and low medium-cost units will be made available in Penang following the revival of seven abandoned housing projects.
Taman Bukit Erskine

MORE than 2,500 low- and low medium-cost units will be made available in Penang following the revival of seven abandoned housing projects.

Three of the projects are on the island -- they are Desa Aman, Fettes Villa (which has been renamed to Taman Bukit Erskine) and Taman Cemerlang.

The other four are Mengkuang Heights and Taman Guar Perahu Indah (in the Seberang Prai Tengah district), Taman Orkid Indah (in the Seberang Prai Utara district) and Taman Pekatra (in the Seberang Prai Selatan district).

State Housing Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the seven projects, which had been abandoned for between five and 15 years, were in various stages of revival.

"Thanks to 'white knights', these projects will be revived (once) again.

"With the completion of these affordable houses within the next few years, more and more people in the state will be able to own houses," he said at the launching ceremony of the Taman Bukit Erskine project at Penang Times Square here yesterday.

Present were Ivory Properties Group Bhd executive director Ron Loh, chief operating officer Datuk Ooi Chin Loo and deputy chief operating officer Goh Chin Heng.

The Taman Bukit Erskine is undertaken by Ivory Villas Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Ivory Properties.

It was abandoned for 11 years due to the 1997 economic crisis before Ivory Villas stepped forward as a 'white knight' to revive the project following a High Court arrangement.

A total of 554 low- and low medium-cost units are being offered in Lebuhraya Halia in Tanjung Tokong here with a built-up area of 60.75sq m each and priced at RM72,500.

Originally, only 363 units were offered with a built-up area of 46.45sq m.

Loh said the Taman Bukit Erskine project is now 30 per cent completed and is expected to fully completed in 2014.

Meanwhile, Wong said the state government was looking into efforts to revive other long-abandoned housing projects in the state.

"There is now a glimmer of hope for purchasers of these long-abandoned project," he said.

RM1 for a glass of water at Purple Cane Restaurant

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 06:15 AM PST

Yesterday, we had our dinner at one of the Purple Cane restaurants in Klang Valley.

We were surprised that we were charged RM1 for a glass of water after paying the bill.

All of us agreed that RM1 for a glass of water was atrocious. After all, it was neither distilled water nor RO water but it was just plain boiled water!

Hence, as a family, we decided that we would no longer order water if we were to dine at Purple Cane.

Do you know what other restaurants that charge RM1 for a glass of water?

I'm sure Purple Cane is not the only one.

RAJA NONG CHIK – STOP YOUR DAY DREAMING!

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 05:18 AM PST

I was with a group of retirees sharing their normal tea tarik session this morning at Putrajaya. And being retirees what else could we be talking about other than about our children, grandchildren and most of all, what need to be done to keep our mind and body healthy. And being retirees, this does not mean that we do not keep abreast with all that is happening in the country today. On the contrary, our level of awareness has peaked up and we are more concern now about what is happening to the country today, than during the time when we were all working. The reason is simply that time is now at our pleasure to read and to reason out, and to be able to make a comparison with all that we see happening to the country today, with that of the past.

They all having to know that I am a blogger had asked me to comment on the recent statement made by FT Minister Raja Nong Chik that the Chinese community at Lembah Pantai are beginning to be drawn towards the BN. I said, "Yes, I am aware of that statement by Raja Nong Chik, but I believe he must be day dreaming when he uttered that statement". I do not know on what basis of facts was used by the minister to come out with such a statement. If it was Shahrizat to have said that, then I do have some reason to believe it. But having to come from Raja Nong Chik who is virtually a 'novice' in the Lembah Pantai constituency is hard for me to believe. Is it because after handing over hampers and 'ang pow' to some 400 odd elderly Chinese, and presumably after having a quick brief by the MCA representatives is enough to convince Raja Nong Chick that the Chinese at Lembah Pantai will vote for the BN this time around?

Now, let me say this to Raja Nong Chik and to his MCA 'advisors' – once again, please stop your day dreaming. The reason I say this is firstly, Raja Nong Chik isn't an elected representative and he became a minister through the 'rear door'. They should know that the Lembah Pantai voters are not the kampung type where they can be easily manipulated once a year with hampers and 'ang pows'. You give, they take and after all, the money for the hampers and 'ang pows' does not come from their personal pockets. If the money is from the allocation provided by the government, then it is public money and for this, the entire elderly Chinese community throughout the country deserves the same gift of hampers and 'ang pows'.

Secondly, Lembah Pantai constituents are of the middle and higher income group; hence they are not illiterates; rather they are a learned lot. They are fully aware of what is going on to the country today, and can differentiate lies from truth; rhetoric or otherwise. When even the super mama Shahrizat Jalil could be trounced by a virtually unknown Nurul Izzah in the last elections, this time who is Raja Nong Chik to take on the jewel of PKR Nurul Izzah. Does he not know that Nurul Izzah has got much stronger and more popular today? Just walk the streets at the Lembah Pantai constituency and one can sense her popularity. And even if BN were to use the usual money tactics to buy votes, they can be terribly mistaken this time? Was it not the popular former Tourism Minister Tan Sri Kadir Sheikh Fadzir who said that money (lots of it) was used to buy votes in previous elections? Of course the voters will take the money handed to them, but this does not guarantee the electorates will vote for the BN candidate – not now.

Thirdly, Lembah Pantai has a large number of young voters and there is no denying that this time around, it is the young voters that will make that critical decision as to which party will be chosen to govern the country. We have seen how the youth (especially university/college students) have daringly come forward to make their voices heard at public forums, in direct challenge to the rulings imposed by the government. This new form of public opinion and awareness is unheard off before. There is the obvious realization that their voices can no longer be subdued by archaic government rulings, and that they want to have a role in the political, economic and social development of the country; especially that affecting their life as matured university students. They no longer want to be cocooned to the academic trap, and to be seen as school children; to be told what can be done and what cannot be done.

Finally, if someone were to ask me this question,"Where then should Raja Nong Chik contest, given that PM Najib thinks he is a winnable candidate and wants to still make him a minister; this time through the 'front door'? My answer would be this – "Dump Tengku (?) Adnan out of Putrajaya and bring in Raja Nong Chik". I think Tengku (?) Adnan has had enough as a minister. Let's see if PM Najib takes this bite.

CRUSADE AGAINST CORRUPTION

Avoid Religious fanaticism to gain mutual trust and respect

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 04:30 AM PST

Don't let our-selves become religious fanatic

  1. Extremism is always bad. Islam teaches us to practice moderation.
  2. Acting extremely is always bad, especially in religious matters.
  3. Buddha also advised the followers to choose the moderate, middle path.
  4. Siddhartha (563-483 BC) followed the extreme path for many years in meditating but could not get enlightenment until he changed to the moderate path.

Mutual trust is important

  1. We must try to understand the other faiths.
  2. If we have no interest, we cannot know others' feelings.
  3. Only if we know and understand the others, we will have a faith and trust.
  4. From that we could sow and grow tolerance.
  5. Stop pointing fingers, finding faults regarding the past mistakes.
  6. Whether right or wrong, forget the past and try to forgive others.

Hassan Ali, Pergilah ke Angkasa Raya Sekalipun, Untuk Jadi Lembu Tunggangan

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 06:41 AM PST

"Saya tiada kepentingan tersendiri.

Saya tahu sedikit sebanyak masalah dalaman parti.

Muslims in Myanmar must engage with our non-Muslim Myanmars

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 03:15 AM PST

Engaged Islam is the path we, Muslims in Myanmar should choose, in this modern world of multiethnic society.

  1. As we are staying in a non-Islamic country, it is more important for us not to isolate our-selves.
  2. But we must communicate, relate, discuss and have a dialogue with or Buddhist Burmese friends.
  3. No man is an island. We should not just stay in our own religious atmosphere.
  4. We have a lot of things to do in unity despite of our differences in religions.
  5. We have to build our beloved country.
  6. We have to work together

- to eradicate hard core poor.

- Many social and welfare works.

- World peace and more important than that,

- peace, stability and progress of Myanmar etc.

We should cooperage extensively in various social and welfare works.

  • We all should look after and work together for the less privileged of our country.

  • The poor, the aged, ill patients, orphans and people out of job, drug addicts, ex-addicts, ex-criminals, socially out cast people like beggars, prostitutes, HIV positives, school drop outs, delinquent children, domestic violent victims are few of the people we want to mention here.

  • Works of merits like building schools, extension of schools, opening free or subsidised clinics and hospitals, rehabilitation centres, rest-houses and resting places for the travellers, digging wells, building ponds, cleaning the streets and city etc could be co-ordinated and done together by the various social and welfare groups regardless of the difference of religion.

  • Those voluntary works should become the regular meeting centres of co-operation for the people of different religions.

  • By working closely together, we can build mutual trust and understanding.

Apabila SMS Sering Menjadi Punca Pergaduhan Dan Penceraian...

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 03:54 AM PST

Cemburu SMS bawa padah

KUALA LUMPUR: Gara-gara SMS, seorang isteri berusia 26 tahun teruk dibelasah suami yang cemburu di rumah mereka di Setapak, awal pagi kelmarin. Gambar fail

We need to promote mutual understanding and respect of all the religions

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 02:13 AM PST

I here by want to promote mutual understanding and respect of all the religions.

  1. Let us promote mutual understanding, mutual love and mutual respect for each other.
  2. All the religions have common good virtues and teachings.
  3. Let us highlight the common and similar teachings and leave the differences to practice personally in our own homes and in the premise of the religious worshipping places. We must fulfil our religious rituals and prayers in our own houses and in worshipping places.
  4. We should avoid argues, debates, quarrels and discussions on religious differences.
  5. These must be avoided in the public but it should be strictly done  in the confines of our own religious community.
  6. We should have a communication hot line open always to discuss any social and religious problems among the different faiths as we are staying together and the potential problems will crop up any time.
