I started my teaching stint at Uplands International School in 1987. It was quite an experience to teach my first group of Sociology and Economics students. One young man whom I remember clearly till today is Jarno S. He stood out from the rest because he dared to be different but I never doubted that he is a special and highly intelligent character.
A few months ago, I managed to reconnect with Jarno, thanks to Facebook. Twenty-four years is a long time to have lost touch and yet, both of us never forgot the other. It has been a very interesting journey to reconnect with him as we would leave our comments occasionally on each other's walls in response to status updates.
Recently, I came across one of his updates which moved me so deeply. He wrote:
Sleep well everyone. And when you get up... rub those dreams into your eyes. Listen to that intuitive seed inside of your self. Yes, quieten down... listen. It grows it knows it shows. Don't build a wall. This plant belongs to the soul jungle, it grows over walls, through them, everywhere, every when. Trust, dive deep.
In response, I wrote to him and invited him to share his thoughts and writings in this blog. This evening, he sent a very positive response and we managed to have a brief FB chat where I encouraged him to write more and to try to get his works published. I was completely intrigued by the wonderful transformation and asked him to tell me more about himself.
Jarno and the boys with whom he goes to the forest once a week to make huts swing on tree swings. One of his friends said, "All boys need a Jarno!"
He said that he has been collecting his writings over the years, must be 20 years worth. And when I asked if he had gone through very deep experiences as could be seen from his writings, he said that he works in a tea shop. He went on to say:
I have been working on my roots all these years. Shoots here and there. More or less a jack of all trades becoming a master of myself. I am ready to bloom now. Like I said, I've been doing a lot of inner work...just through living and learning.
Life is the book of which every day is an open page. One needs live that fully without wanting to rush to the ending. Doing that well, one reaches the end well. Answers and clarity trickle in. Those answers get modified and fine-tuned and clarity gets clearer if one remains open and honest with oneself and others. The deep journey.
I've been a cleaner, I've made little exhibitions, did the Christmas market with self made driftwood candle stands, abseiled down tall buildings to clean the windows having to try to rescue a fellow worker who fell and died.....
I've seen quite a few different things. most of all what kept me going again and again was writing and creative work. also a trust that all this was a preparation for me, a tilling for the harvest...
I feel the time is really here and I am ready to dive head first into it... There have been numerous thorns in this rose garden.... I'm ready for more roses. Your honest open no holding back comments are a balsam for my soul, I thank you dearly... they are food for the journey...
Very beautifully written with much depth, lucidity and sincerity! I will be featuring his writings here whenever he sends them to me. Jarno, I am very proud of you!!!

Healthy sperm needs a certain omega-3 fatty acid found in fish sources like salmon and tuna, a study has found. – shutterstock.com
LOS ANGELES, Jan 11 – Gents, if you want your swimmers to get some tail action, best tuck into a plate of fish.
To understand the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in male fertility, it's important to understand the anatomy of sperm.
As researchers from the University of Illinois explain it, normal sperm are composed of a cap-like structure that surrounds the anterior end of the sperm head called the acrosome.
It's here, in the cap, where the enzymes needed to successfully penetrate an egg are housed and concentrated.
But in order for the sperm to develop this arch or cap-like structure and the rest of the building blocks needed to fuse the rest of the sperm together – pointy head and extra long tail – sperm need a certain omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the study, announced Monday, found.
"Without DHA, this vital structure doesn't form and sperm cells don't work," said Timothy Abbott, study co-author.
Marine fish like salmon and tuna are excellent sources of DHA.
The scientist began to investigate the importance of DHA in male fertility after finding that mice which lacked the fatty acid were basically infertile.
When DHA was introduced into the mice's diet, however, fertility was completely restored.
Because DHA is also abundant in tissues like the brain, retina and the testes, authors of the study say their research could have implications relating to brain function and cognitive illnesses like dementia and vision.
Meanwhile, another study out of Harvard University last year also found that poor nutrition can damage sperm quality, as those who consumed diets high in saturated fats including deep-fried and processed foods had poor-quality swimmers compared to men who ate whole grains, vegetables and fish regularly.
Foods that have been shown to boost male fertility include eggs, salmon, natural yogurt, nuts, seeds, berries, sweet potatoes, broccoli and asparagus. – AFP

It has been a very busy day for me. My new year resolution was not just to lose 10 more pounds by April to hit 30 pound loss (current nett loss is 19 pounds whereas before X'mas it was 20 pounds) but also to cook/bake more and to explore other avenues of creative, musical and literary adventures.
Today, I cooked herbal chicken soup with wolf berry, mushrooms, American ginseng which my aunt gave me plus other condiments. The day before, I made potato bread with poppy seeds and over the weekend, I also made banana muffins with poppy seeds and grilled lamb chops. So now you know why I have not been blogging much of late. :-)

After I drove my son home, I went about doing my homework for my photo-editing class tomorrow. My first lesson was last week. Believe it or not, I started at 4.30pm and I finally got a hang of it on the ninth attempt. I finished it at 7.45pm! Phew! Following that, I called my teacher and told him the good news. I will be blogging about him in a few days' time.
I used Corel Draw Painter 11 to do superimpose a pic taken last night when I met up with a Facebook friend from Klang on a different background.

:-) I will be going for my second class tomorrow afternoon and am very excited about it.
My older boy produced his first YouTube clip last night (home production) and it is my pleasure to share it with you all. He graduated with an honors degree in Contemporary Music and teaches at various places. He is also the violinist for Juanophobia, a jazz fusion band that won the Battle of Bands competition last year. Here it is - Jonathan and his cover version of Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain".
Have a lovely evening, everyone!

Bapa Saiful mohon Peguam Negara rayu kes liwat II

Muslimah PAS pertahan `gelagat' ahli ketika menyokong Anwar
-FMT
Utusan dakwa gelagat muslimat PAS memalukan
PASkah UMNO?
Kalau tak mahu siar memang dasar kewartawanan Utusan di tahap bingai:

Done with my back-to-school stuff for the children from various families (well, most of them anyway), today was my first clinic duty for the year. I have already told the 2 volunteers who are supposed to join me for clinic duty, one of them is to join me every 2nd Wednesday of the month, while the other on the 4th Wednesday of the month. But today, the volunteer who was supposed to join me didn't turn up and didn't call or SMS me either. I think she was expecting me to remind her every time there's clinic duty. Sorry lah, I have so many other things to remember, am not about to be her PA and remind her every single time…
The moment I got to the ID clinic today, I asked SN if she had managed to get hold of Jah's husband. You see, on Monday SN called me up, asking me for the phone number of Jah's husband. SN had been trying to call Jah's old number, she never got through. As far as I know, Jah's old number had not been in use ever since she got married to this guy. I so happened to have the husband's number because recently just before Jah gave birth, he had been contacting me to seek help for a number of things (if you remember one of my earlier postings, he asked if I could be his kakak angkat), but he stopped contacting me after I told him our financial help was basically more for children education.
Anyway, according to SN, she tried the number I gave, and while the phone rang, nobody answered. After a few times, her calls didn't get through at all. Probably he was avoiding SN as he knew SN wanted him to go to the hospital to get his wife's supply of ARV. Ah well…
Today I also got to know about the death of an acquaintance. I had known this guy before through my NGO activities, and for the past few months he had been contacting me via SMS asking about various questions on HIV tests and treatments – where to get tested, what to do once he got the referral letter, how to get an appointment, etc. Apparently he had set an appointment at the ID clinic but he died before the date of his appointment due to some opportunistic diseases. And he's still so young.
Back to my clinic duty, I had 3 cases referred to me today. The first case was a guy in his 30's, married, 3 kids (the youngest just a few months old). He used to work as a security guard for some time until one day he was caught as a suspect in a murder case. He had to spend about a year or two in jail before he was finally acquitted. He then went back to work as a security guard at his old work place, but put back on probation. After a few months, at the end of his probationary period, he had to do a medical check-up. It was during this check-up he was found to be HIV+. And when the results of his medical tests were handed over to his manager, he was laid off from work.
Laid off because of HIV? Oh please, he's only working as a guard, what danger could that cause to customers of the company? He hasn't been working for a few months now, but according to him, his old boss is helping out to appeal to the management to take him back in, as HIV is not an excuse for him not to do his job well. He is after all, still strong and healthy. According to him, the latest that he heard was that there's a 90% chance he may get his job back. I hope so too. I gave him our brochure & our number, since he didn't want a buddy, he said he'd call us when he needs to consult us for anything.
The second case referred today was a young guy in his 20's, just married last year. He found out about his HIV during his pre-marital mandatory testing. They went ahead with the marriage anyway, and when I asked if his wife's family okay with his HIV status, he just said yes. It's his family who aren't aware of his HIV status.
Later after talking to him, I found out that although he himself is still not on ARV as his CD4 is still relatively quite high, his wife is already on ARV with a CD4 of 200+. Hmmmm… my guess is that during the mandatory testing, they were BOTH tested HIV +, and so of course his wife's family had no objections whatsoever to their marriage. He too preferred not to be assigned any buddy, so again I just gave him our brochure so he could contact us when needed.
The third case today was another guy in his early 30's. He seemed calm and very open. Apparently SN had spoken to him before and told him about us Buddies. After seeing him today, I found that he is more suitable as a volunteer rather than a client, and when I asked if he'd be interested to join as a volunteer, he immediately agreed. Good thing I had a membership form in my bag, and so he decided to fill in the form right away.
So although 3 new cases were referred to me today, there were no new clients. Instead, out of the three, we got a new volunteer! Yayyy!! We now have 5 PLHIVs as volunteers!

Unless you know these adults well, what assurances do you have that your children will be safe? Sadly, the answer

Rani paling layak ganti Hasan Ali
Jawatan Ini Jawatan Yang Memeningkan Kepala
