Dr M: NEP bred non-Malay tycoons too

Syed Jaymal Zahiid | February 24, 2012
Responding to Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah's criticism, the former premier says the policy saw the rise of many non-Malay millionairs and billionaires, like his 'good friend' Vincent Tan.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has defended his reign and implementation of the New Economic Policy (NEP) following criticism from Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
Mahathir said the race-based affirmative action framework had also bred non-Malay billionaires like Vincent Tan and Robert Kuok, the Berjaya Group founder and sugar tycoon who made their fortunes under the NEP.
Earlier today Razaleigh, affectionately known as Ku Li, said the NEP was not meant to create an incubated class of Malay capitalists but was designed to help the poor and all Malaysians.
He also criticised the policy as a source of racial disunity which resulted in the country's inability to capitalise on its diversity and forced it backward.
However, Mahathir disagreed.
"You can count the number of non-Malays who became millionaires or even billionaires during my time. My good friend Vincent Tan became a billionaire. Robert Kuok became a multi-billionaire during my time when the NEP was being implemented – the monopoly of sugar and flour gave him the kickstart," he told reporters here today.
Just last week, Razaleigh chided the ruling Barisan Nasional for its endorsement of decades of patronage politics that arose from the Mahathir era.
He said the mix of business and politics ruined policies created by the country's founding fathers and resulted in widespread corruption, the decay of social institutions and had widened economic inequality.
The Kelantan prince also said the NEP had been misused and had become a strong factor behind Malaysia's worsening race-relations. He pointed to the Malay-majority civil service as an example.
Policies under the influential former prime minister's rule had been under attack recently following the leniency showed by Putrajaya towards former national carrier chief Tajudin Ramli, the poster boy of Mahathir's now-criticised programme to groom Malay corporate leaders.
Tajudin led MAS into a downward spiral, incurring record losses until it forced the Mahathir administration to intervene in what was perceived to be a controversial bail out. It was also seen as a way to save the former MAS chief.
The MAS bail-out
Opposition leaders claimed this leniency was again extended when Putrajaya decided to settle the legal dispute with Tajudin over the debt he owed out of court.
The settlement sum was undisclosed, prompting intense public criticism and attacks from the opposition over the right of taxpayers to know how much of public funds had been recovered.
Mahathir defended the move to buy MAS's shares in 2001 for RM8 each which was twice the market value at the time, saying it was needed to turn the company around.
He also said the bailout was not the worst although he conceded that taxpayers money were lost in the MAS debacle.
The influential Umno leader said under his successor's rule, there were more costly bailouts.
"The government lost money when it cancelled the double tracking and electrification project between Johor Baru and Padang Besar. We lost about RM8 billion," he argued.
The project was cancelled by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi months after he took over the country's leadership in 2003.
His early departure from office in 2009 was said to have been caused by the cancellation which angered Mahathir and prompted him to launch scathing attacks against his successor. It would later influence Umno to oust him.

A moderate MCA, a Malaysian Chinese society

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 10:10 AM PST

Congratulation to MCA on its 63rd anniversary today.

In giving my opinion as a Malaysian (not as a Malay), I think the Chinese party has done well in forging better understanding and cooperation among multiracial Malaysians. Its moderate approach in attending to some delicate racial issues has earned the party a certain degree of respect and appreciation from other races, particularly the Malays.

True enough, its collaboration within Barisan Nasional is paving the way for the Chinese to be more Malaysians in the sense that the country's upkeep is for them to shoulder with the Malays, Indians, Sikhs and others.

And by feeling 'Malaysians', the Chinese have all the while helped develop the nation, socially and economically. With more Chinese-Bumiputra companies are established to grab the abundant of opportunities in the fast moving economic sector, the level of prejudice among races reached its thinnest level ever.

Of course there are hiccups here and there but those who incited racial disharmony represent just a drop of water in the ocean, so to say.

Whether its done by the Malays, Chinese, Indians or others, Malaysians are getting more absorbed with it to the extent that nobody would want to exaggerate it anymore for one common reason - Malaysian unity will not be rattled by such foolish doings. Racial and religious extremists are always there to batter our national stability, as we all had understood.

I don't care what others think about the MCA and the moderate Chinese inside MCA. I never encountered any problem with my Chinese friends in my own neighborhood or elsewhere. In my kampung, we still practice what we have been doing since the 1960s - to joint hands in every ceremony and events (they include DAP members too).

When it comes to prejudice, I am willing to take criticism from my-fellow Malay bloggers and friends by saying that its the Malays who are more prejudice toward the Chinese, than the Chinese toward the Malays and Indians.

Why? While the Chinese understand Bahasa Malaysia, almost 95 per cent Malays do not understand Mandarin or Cantonese.

In many instances, I saw and overheard how a group of Malays seated at a table next to some Chinese at a restaurant, made similar remarks, 'I think they are mocking at us' when in fact, it was not the case.

I remember while having dinner with Fong Chan On and the Star boss Wong Chun Wai last year, the former MCA minister agreed to my suggestion that our primary schools should introduce Mandarin classes for interested Malay students. The argument is simple - in the years to come, more Malays will be conversant in one of the Chinese dialects and this would erase their prejudice towards their own countrymen.

And as such, more Chinese companies will be open to such Malays. Furthermore, the language is becoming more important as China takes over the US and Japan as the world's major economic power.

Yes, there some Malays who enrolled at Chinese schools but the number is too small. To learn the language, they have to take up language courses elsewhere.

Language is always a barrier to better racial understanding. It is common in many countries. An absolute Malaysian unity can be achieved if the Malays, Chinese and Indians understand each others' language. I am not sure if the government likes the idea but I hope MCA will take up the effort, at least by setting up Mandarin classes for free to those who are willing to acquire it.

Under Dr Chua Soi Lek, MCA has improved its position as a party for the 'moderate Malaysian Chinese'. While the DAP is also getting strong support, as had been the case for Penang, MCA over the past few months saw progress in convincing the Chinese that radical mind does not augur well for a multi-racial Malaysia.

MCA has proven that politic of the moderates is most suitable in the Malaysian context. The DAP, which self-proclaimed as being a demoractic party, turns out to be a party owned by its top executives. I don't remember the last time DAP called for its AGM and had a party election.

The DAP today, which is a Pakatan Rakyat ally, is different from the DAP of yesteryear. It is not just working together with its Pakatan allies PAS and PKR to win seats but is also set to change the fate of the Malaysian Chinese.

As CSL mentioned recently, a vote for DAP is also a vote for PAS. Its a eunuch to PAS, just like Perak case. Even within the BN framework, Umno too is trying to run down PAS - its main foe in the past and coming general elections.

There is also a sign of renewed optimism among the Chinese over MCA. The recent debate between CSL and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has somewhat restored the party's pride and dignity. It is a rare occasion that an MCA leader 'takes the bull by its horns'. However, CSL did it.

MCA, under CSL, is also free from internal tussles. The leaders and members are more forward-thinking and are willing to settle whatever differences within the concept of party spirit. No more is heard about domestic bickering. Even words of disgruntled has subsided.

I believe this is how former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad put Umno under control (except for the 1987 party election which saw Umno declared illegal by the court). CSL's minor 'confrontation with his predecessor Ong Tee Keat has also been put far behind.

From being too defensive, MCA is now going more on the attack. Although the 2008 general election saw the party lost half the number of seats it won in 2004, predictions for the next national poll are more positive. Some political analysts dared to say that the party could help Umno defeat Pakatan Rakyat in Penang.

As MCA celebrates its anniversary, its top leadership should find ways to make changes for the betterment of the party and to Barisan Nasional. Although it looks like a slalom, more aspects of the party's approach in nation-building should be improved if it wants to stay relevant.

Just like Umno, MCA needs reform to its style, approach, attitude and senses. Staying close to Malaysians - irrespective of race - will augur well in making MCA the most sought Chinese party in the country. This will ensure it stays relevant.

The founding fathers of MCA had long subscribed to moderate politics. MCA, under CSL will remain that way. Malaysia is a unique place, and any politics of radicalism and extremism will only tear the country apart.

To my Chinese friends, please remember this - the road to ruin is always kept under good repair. MCA is always there for you.

What You Did Not Know About...

Khmer Rouge was a notable group of people that was originally based out of Cambodia. The group consisted of people who followed the Communist Party of Kampuchea in the 1970s. The regime was very strong but was noted predominantly for its violence in that the regime was responsible for the deaths of nearly two million people from executions, forced labor and starvation.

The regime was also noted for featuring a number of notable figures, predominantly Pol Pot, who worked to get the entire movement going. All of these figures worked together and came from varying backgrounds but would also be taken out during the entire process as well. All of these figures worked together to create this regime and were all involved in a series of tribunals that were arranged by a number of judges from all over the world.

Khmer Rouge was created in the 1960s by Pol Pot in the jungles of Cambodia. The name is French for "Red Khmer" and was named by Norodom Sihanouk, the former King and Prime Minister of Cambodia. The group was devoted to the creation of a radical Communist regime. This regime was formed as a means of working to destroy all influences on Cambodia by the Western world. An agrarian society was the target of Khmer Rouge.

Pol Pot, the founder of the organization, was born as Salot Sar in 1925. He grew up in the northern Cambodian province of Kompong Thong. He moved to Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia, in 1931 and in 1946 joined the Communist Party to help get rid of the French in the area.

He joined the French Communist Party in 1952 but soon failed an examination. He came back to Cambodia a year later and joined the Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Party in the same year. He soon began working as a teacher in a private school and also got married.

The 1960s were a time when Pol Pot began to set up the foundation of Khmer Rouge. In 1960 restructured the KPRP and the group was renamed the Workers' Party of Kampuchea. He became the main commander of the WPK in 1963. It would again become the Kampuchean Communist Party in 1966 after he visited China.

He would refuge to the northeastern part of Cambodia in 1967 and created a revolutionary army a year later.

A massive insurgency campaign from Khmer Rouge was created in 1970. The group was assisted by troops from the Viet Cong and from North Vietnam. The guerrillas in Khmer Rouge worked in a massive campaign to take over Cambodia and oust government officials. The start of the campaign was very effective and was able to get control of about a third of Cambodia.

[PANAS] Ust Badrul Amin Hantar SMS Nafi Khalwat

Pemimpin PKR ditangkap khalwat

Suami dtg dgn gangster tuduh ana bawak lari n sorok. Kes setel 'family problem'. Mak pompuan datang. Mmg dorang nak cerai. Isteri dh selalu nak lari. Ana nasihat pulang semula"

OFA coffee table book, part 14

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 05:15 AM PST

Officially there were 66 people at this morning's special general meeting at The Old Frees' Association this morning. Unofficially, more people had turned up after the attendance book had closed. When I arrived at the association this morning, all I saw were happy faces. That certainly gave me a boost for the rest of the morning.

People were actually coming up to congratulate me on this job. Certainly this is something new to me, and the job's not even completed yet!

Anyhow, when it came down to discussing the budget of RM50,000 for the coffee table book, there were no dissenting voices from the floor. Everyone seemed to agree that it was a jolly good idea because when it came to the vote, the budget was passed unanimously.

But there was a comment from someone that his friend, an Old Free who was staying in Sydney, had complained to him that nobody from the Editorial team had replied to his email. And since the president said that this matter would be looked into, I asked this chap for more details after the meeting. Found out later that I didn't know his friend. It had nothing to do with us; most probably he had emailed the person who was supposed to be the editor before Molly and I agreed to accept this job.

By the way at 11.48pm last night, I received more of the draft layouts back from the graphic designers. That was quick! But it hardly affords me any breathing space. I will have to redouble my efforts next week!

Menafikan keperluan debat

Keengganan berdebat hina kewarasan masyarakat

Polis Mahu Pengarah NFCorp Didakwa Atas Kesalahan Pecah Amanah

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 07:05 AM PST

Polis telah memohon kepada Peguam Negara supaya pengarah Pusat Fidlot Corporation (NFCorp) didakwa atas kesalahan pecah amanah selepas pemimpin pembangkang mendakwa sebahagian daripada RM250 juta pinjaman mudah kerajaan telah digunakan untuk tujuan lain., demikian lapor The Malaysian Insider.

Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Komersial (JSJK) Bukit Aman Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan mengesahkan perkara itu petang tadi kepada beberapa organisasi media.

"Kami mencadangkan Pejabat Peguam Negara supaya semua pengarah NFCorp didakwa atas kesalahan pecah amanah," katanya kepada The Malaysian Insider.

Najib Jahil Prinsip Pentadbiran Dan Federalisme - MB Selangor

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 05:38 AM PST

Fried fly in my Paandi rice. Will I go Paandi again?

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 04:50 AM PST

On Wednesday, 21 December 2011, I had banana leaf rice for lunch at Paandi PJ and found a fried fly.
Told the lady boss about the fried fly in my rice before paying for my food.

She said sorry and gave me FREE rice but I still had to pay RM4 for the fried fish dish.

Well, I was disappointed that I did not get a FREE lunch but then again I thought, 'Oh well, I may not come here to eat again.'

Nevertheless, I will most probably patronize Paandi again just for the mork/moru curry that is only served every Wednesday.

Mahathir Tahu Najib Akan Kalah Jika Berdebat Dengan Anwar

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 04:37 AM PST

So whats wrong with that?

Tambah Mahathir, "malangnya strategi dia buat tu salah".

When you go home, Tell them of us, and say: For their tomorrow, We gave our today

At the KOHIMA WAR CEMETERY in Imphal, Commemorating the memories of the British and Indian (mostly Nepal and Punjabi) soldiers who died: "FOR YOUR TOMORROW WE GAVE OUR TODAY…."

Yes a lot of them give their lives to protect India and to liberalize Burma, Malaysia, and Singapore. Retreated badly shaped Japanese soldiers were attacked by Burmese Revolutionary Forces.

Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore should at least accept that we all are free because the Indian soldiers cut the head of Fascist Japanese, Burmese cut-off their extremities and USA forced the British to give Independence to its colonies so that they could trade freely.

The following was copied from here , The Kohima EpitaphIn March 1944, the Japanese 31st Division moved northwestward in Burma, swept through the Naga hills, invaded India, and fell upon Imphal and Kohima. Confidently the Japanese planned to press toward the India Plains. The Allies in the CBI Theater faced a disaster of monumental proportions unless the enemy was stopped.

A crucial battle ensued at Kohima where some 2,500 British Empire troops came under siege. They fought a formidable Japanese force numbering 15,000 soldiers supported by 10,000 ammunition laden oxen. For weeks the belligerents sparred in bloody artillery duels interrupted only by hand to hand skirmishes and bayonet attacks. Finally, after 64 days, amid terrible losses on both sides, the Japanese were beaten back.

They withdrew from Kohima. Japan's dominance in northern Burma had begun its crumble. Understandingly, the determination and gallantry shown by allied troops in the Kohima siege was quick to become the subject of poem, song, and legend.

Today in the Kohima cemetery, among the 1,378 grave markers, is the famous Kohima Memorial with its historic inscription:

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 01:53 AM PST

Cycling At Balik Pulau, The Other Side Of Penang – Last Monday, I went to the other side of Penang Island, a more rural part of Penang, a more nature part, somewhere more relax, more greens and a totally different side of the urban developed George Town – Balik Pulau. Balik Pulau also means back of Island in Malay.

It's a small town at the back of the island, with the presence of villages, padi field and many fruit and vegetable farms. I've read online that there's bicycle rental service in Balik Pulau that allows you to rent a bike to explore Balik Pulau at the same time exercise some reflexes of the feet through cycling.

I called up the person in-charged Eddie who operates the bicycle rental service and meet him up in Balik Pulau. He brought 3 bikes, one for himself, and two for me and Arron. Besides renting the bike, Eddie himself was our guide around Balik Pulau that day. I didn't think we would have a guide, I though we would be given a map and follow the trail. But then having a guide is better than following a map, Eddie was very friendly to guide us along the way, and introduced some cool places in Balik Pulau.

Our biking trail was designed by Eddie himself and the whole trip took about 2.5 hours through 20km of journey. We started about 5pm and ended at 7.30pm. Normally it's 15km only but he told us that we were fast and he brought us to explore more.

Being in Balik Pulau doesn't felt like being in Penang anymore because of the rural village and the beauty of nature. Our biking trail went through Malay village, Chinese Kampung Baru, river streams, padi fields, fruit farms, vegetable farms, fishing village, Malay's cemetery and a little beach, as well as some major road in Balik Pulau.

It's fun, it's a good exercise, but sitting too long on the bicycle makes my ass hurts. After all, Arron and I enjoyed the cycling trip, only that we missed out the Hokkien Mee and Laksa alongside Kuala Jalan Baru which only available during the weekend.

Arron Lim.

Well, the Bike Trail signage are actually set up by the government, though Eddie doesn't recommend following the signage as the trail is long and doesn't has much thing to see.

Eddie introducing a Chinese temple at Kampung Jalan Bharu.

He said that if you sees a Chinese temple presence, it means that the whole area is a Chinese populated village. Normally temple is set up at the entry point of the village as well the end point, which the Chinese god will protect the people.

A dirty stream

Typical Chinese village house.

A rice paddy field at Balik Pulau, unfortunately, those paddy has been harvested and resulted a not-pretty paddy field scene.

It's me.

Luckily the weather was pretty nice that afternoon. Google Weather did actually reported that 70% chance of storm, but there's no rain.

Cycling through the paddy field.

Yes, this is Penang Island, doesn't look like Penang right? It's the other side of Penang, the more nature side.

A hut storing stuff.

Awas = Beware.

Our rides.

At the river mouth of Sungai Burong, where here you can get a great shot of Sunset. Unfortunately, we were still early at that time.

Looking at far, it's Pulau Betong, a fishing village and at there you can find Pasir Panjang beach.

An abandoned house that looks creepy.

Locals playing sepak takraw.

Along the main road.

I've heard that Nibong Tebal has bicycle for rental for cycling trip too, guess it'll my next destination. Cycling is fun and healthy way to explore places like this.

If you plan to go cycle at Balik Pulau, do give Eddie a call to book your bike and make appointment. He told me that there will be a Explore Balik Pulau Visitor Centre opening somewhere around May 2012 at Air Putih.

MCA ADUN for Kuala Kubu Baru, Wong Koon Mun used to misunderstand my statement and it is most unfortunate that he repeated the same mistake two days ago when he openly criticised me for trying to stop spouses of postal voters from becoming postal voters on polling day.He further criticised me that my statement is against the spirit of democracy as my suggestion discourages spouses of postal

Ulasan GB
