Perverse MACC used convicted criminal to fix Ramli

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 07:59 AM PST

Retired Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Ramli Yusuff, at his birthday speech on Wednesday, revealed more on his Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) experience with details on how it used a convicted criminal to frame and press charges against him.

Ramli said that the MACC had used this shady character's statement while he was still in custody under the Emergency Ordinance, as the foundation to build up the charges against him, particularly those he had faced in Kuala Lumpur.

ramli yusuff asset declare case 120310 02He elaborated, saying, "Imagine this, the MACC relied on the words of a shady character who was under custody and detained under the Emergency Ordinance and then converted to restricted residence, and later released after they secured his cooperation to frame me by making allegations that in 1999 I was paid corruption money through an officer. These allegations were supposed to have come from a source involved in a slew of organised crimes, including illegal money lending (loan sharks), illegal character lottery, prostitution and drug pushing in Johor. The notes of evidence in court (proceeding) show so clearly that all these allegations were mere fabrications."

When criminal's word is gold

Ramli (right) said the MACC did not even dare produce the man in court to prove that statement yet he was charged just based on the words of this known criminal became the MACC's basis for saying that there were grounds to justify a notice to declare his assets.

He added, "Nothing could be more perverse than what was done to me."

On Thursday, Malaysiakini reported that Ramli had accused attorney-general (AG) Abdul Gani Patail and former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan and the MACC of "fixing" him and his men.

Waspada - Ada Lembu Mengamuk Nak Serang Negeri Pakatan Habis-habisan

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 07:02 AM PST

Serang habis-habisan

-hm

Speech at International Taoist Forum

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 05:58 AM PST

As reported in Guang Min Daily

Laporan Polis Terhadap FELDA Ekoran Pekeliling Paksa Peneroka Serah Dokumen

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 05:15 AM PST

Turut hadir Presiden Persatuan Anak Peneroka Felda Kebangsaan (Anak) Mazlan Aliman, peguam Harris Abdullah, Ketua Pemuda Pas Pahang Shahril Azman Abdul Halim serta ketua-ketua peneroka.

-SH

Zhouzhuang: Explore The Ancient Water Town

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 04:00 AM PST

China Trip – Zhouzhuang: Explore The Ancient Water Town 周庄 (Day 2) – After 1.5+ hours of ride from Shanghai, finally we reached outside-of-Zhouzhuang. Zhouzhuang is 30km away from Suzhou, you can say that Zhouzhuang is under the prefecture city of Suzhou. I tell you what, the first thing I felt when arriving at Zhouzhuang is cold! It's 7 degree celcius there, 2 degree lower than Shanghai. The wind and the dryness were really cold.

Very funny thing is that when the bus was stopping, the "private" cab drivers started moving close to the bus, offering a ride to Zhouzhuang. It's not one or two person, but 6-7 persons together.

There's no official cab at Zhouzhuang. It's all these "private" cab, charging you for only 10RMB, and they will drive you to Zhouzhuang water town area. We did not the ride as we had someone to fetch us, it's arranged by our hotel – Long Xing Inn. The bus station to Zhouzhuang is very near only, about less than 10 minutes and I was starting to feel excited already.

We met with the owner of Long Xing Inn outside of Zhouzhuang ancient water town and she brought us to the ticket counter to buy our entrance ticket. You need to buy tickets to go into Zhouzhuang ancient water town, it costs 100RMB per person for two days or visit. You must always keep your ticket well as you can't go in again without the ticket, you also need to show the ticket when visiting some of the attractions in the water town too.

Brother booked the hotel through a Chinese website and the owner told us that we were the only one who used English name to book. Haha. The room was not bad, only 140RMB/night with attached bathroom. They also have Chinese-ancient-themed room which is more expensive.

We put our stuff in the hotel, rest a while, then we went to explore the ancient water town. The sky wasn't really blue enough for me to take nice photos. It's very dull and cold afternoon.

Zhouzhuang is a very famous and popular water townships in China and it's also known as "Venice of the East". It has over thousand years of history. Although it's not as big as Venice, it's still pretty with authentic Chinese architecture house. Though, many of them are upgraded with better building materials.

There's no road in Zhouzhuang, it's all water canal that connects to different parts of the town. Though you can tour Zhouzhuang by foot.

There's so many water townships near to Shanghai and the reason we chose Zhouzhuang was because that it's the most famous and has the longest history. I realised that we should have visited more water townships as Shanghai was pretty boring after then. Haha.

Zhouzhuang was kinda quiet in the afternoon. Most tourists come in the morning. I've met people spending a few days at there as Zhouzhuang is very relaxing. It's the opposite of the Shanghai's busy city. It's very calm and there's no pollution. People at there are very friendly too, but I don't really understand their dialect. There's some attractions to visit in Zhouzhuang like ancient house of famous people, temple, but we only did the visit the next day during the morning. We just walked around Zhouzhuang.

Be sure to get a map with you as it's easy to get lost at there. We did get lost and ended asking people for direction to go back where we came from. Haha. It gets even quieter when the night falls at about 5pm. Many shops started closing and the temperature drops even lower to 5 degree celcius! It's my first time experiencing cold weather.

Cheap beer! It's only 3RMB/bottle and with 3% of alcohol only.

We went back to the inn for a rest, then headed for dinner. Food at there was not really nice, it's different and it's weird. It's different from Southern Chinese food. I don't really know what's good to eat at there, appetite haven't came back at that time.

After dinner, we went to buy some beer at the mini-market and also some sweets to bite. Slept early that night because we wanted to check out the sunrise at about 7am.

Bikram Singh will be next Indian Army chief

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 04:25 AM PST

How gracious the Indian government is. No discrimination around. Only the best will do even if they came from a ethnic group that killed the Prime Minister. But this guy's credentials are very impressive.

Lt Gen Bikram Singh, Army Chief designate.
Lt Gen Bikram Singh, Army Chief designate.

Eastern Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Bikram Singh, will be the next Chief of Army Staff. He will head the 1.3-million strong Indian Army succeeding General Vijay Kumar Singh, who retires from service on May 31, 2012.

The Defence Ministry announced the Army Chief-designate on Saturday almost three months ahead of schedule as against the normal practice of 60 days. The move could be seen to remove uncertainty following a rash of speculative reports that Gen. Singh could put in his papers early which could alter succession plan.

It came a day after the current Army Chief told an English news weekly that he was not going to resign. A section of media speculated that Gen. V.K. Singh would resign after the Supreme Court disposed of his petition last month on the year of birth controversy.

Gen. Bikram Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment on March 31, 1972 and during the last four decades, served in a variety of Command and Staff appointments.Besides having commanded a Corps in the Northern Command, he has served as Deputy Force Commander of multi-nation UN Peace Keeping Mission in Congo. He had also served as UN Observer in Nicaragua and El Salvador during early 1990s.

Lt.Gen. Bikram Singh has studied with distinction at the Defence Services Staff College, the Army War College and the US Army War College, Pennsylvania. He also has a M. Phil in Defence Management from Indore University.

He is decorated with Param Vishist Seva Meda, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishist Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishist Seva Medal. He is also one of the Honorary ADCs of the President of India. Married to Surjeet Kaur, the couple have two sons.

-HM

Neither Here Nor There?

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 02:22 AM PST

After a hilarious exchange of comments in my Facebook with two dear but quite insane friends in a thread that started on a depressing mode but ended on a high, I surfed the net and came across two contrasting articles that are neither here nor there. Do they mirror the floundering state of affairs here?

Whilst I applaud Prime Minister Najib for his humility, grace and elegance to make such a public admission, I wonder why the second article seems to contradict the elements highlighted in the first.

Article #1: Najib Extends Apology For BN's Mistakes In Last Election by Bernama

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak extended an apology to the people on behalf of the Barisan Nasional (BN) for the coalition's mistakes in the last general election, which cost it several electoral seats and states including Kedah.
He said the BN would rectify the mistakes and make up by serving the people as best as it can.
The voters' rejection of the BN, like in Kedah, was in a way due to the mistakes made by the coalition, he said.
"I believe that we should not be arrogant. In a parliamentary democracy, we have to subject ourselves to the power of the people. We must have made mistakes for the people to have rejected us. We apologise for our past mistakes. The victors apologise, as do the losers," he said at a meet-the-people session at the Kuala Ketil public field near here.
The prime minister said the BN will learn from the mistakes and rise again.
Article #2: No need to bring up BN's past mistakes, says Muhyiddin by Melissa Chi

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin said although the prime minister admitted Barisan Nasional's (BN) mistakes, "there is no need to list out our weaknesses; that is in the past".

"What is more important is in front, in the next 10, 20 years and as the prime minister said, we are ready to improve ourselves and improve on what we have already accomplished such as the national transformation programmes, which includes the economy, government, politics, rural issues and new measures taken by the prime minister and the government, which have an effective impact.

"The people have accepted the concept of 1 Malaysia and there is a new feeling of confidence in Barisan Nasional among the people," Muhyiddin told reporters after the launch of the World Kidney Day here at Dataran Merdeka.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak apologised yesterday for BN's past mistakes, which led to the loss of its two-thirds parliamentary majority and four states in 2008, recognising the groundswell against the ruling coalition remains ahead of a general election that must be held by next year.

"I believe that we should not be arrogant. In a parliamentary democracy, we have to subject ourselves to the power of the people. We must have made mistakes for the people to have rejected us," Najib was quoted as saying in Kedah yesterday by Bernama Online.

"We apologise for our past mistakes. The victors apologise, as do the losers."

The prime minister said the BN would rectify the mistakes and make up by serving the people as best as it could.

The voters' rejection of the BN, like in Kedah, was in a way due to the mistakes made by the coalition, Najib said during a day-long visit to the state.

Today, his deputy said that the prime minister's apology was an act of humility.

"We, as humans, of course have weaknesses; nobody is perfect and the Barisan Nasional government is aware of our weaknesses and may have made some mistakes.
"However, in the past 54 years, nobody can deny the fact that, even with our weaknesses, we have succeeded with major developments in economy, social, culture, education, international relations and many more," Muhyiddin said.

1. Well, the PM made one stand whereas the DPM made another stand. Unity? Is this 1Malaysia when both talk and walk in opposite directions?

2. In the first article, the PM apologized for the coalition's mistakes in the last general election whereas in the second article,  the DPM says "Barisan Nasional government is aware of our weaknesses and may have made some mistakes."

So did the BN make mistakes or not? I am really befuddled and confused! I really hope our Prime Minister can give us immediate clarification because this will go a long way to boost his image and to reinforce confidence in his leadership.

3. If we "there is no need to list out our weaknesses; that is in the past".  as stated by the DPM, how can the PM fullfil his pledge that "BN would rectify the mistakes and make up by serving the people as best as it can"?

4. Perhaps the DPM can explain how BN can rectify its mistakes without listing the mistakes.

How wonderful it he can tell us the strategy he has in mind for it would be a terrific breakthrough in many industries, sectors, fields of research, education, economics, human resources if people need not carry out evaluations/assessments/appraisals and YET can make progress!!!  Please let us know how he can assist the PM to fulfil his pledge without listing the mistakes.

5. DPM has said that "we are ready to improve ourselves and improve on what we have already accomplished such as the national transformation programmes, which includes the economy, government, politics, rural issues and new measures taken by the prime minister and the government, which have an effective impact."

I don't think the denial of how BN has brought development in various areas of the country WITH THE RAKYAT'S MONEY is an issue. Of course we know because the BN politicians keep reminding us.

That is NOT the issue.

The issue is working in a united and supportive stance with the PM as his deputy.

The issue is projecting an image of unity so that people can have faith and trust in BN.

The issue is if the Prime Minister has had the grace, elegance and humility to admit that  the coalition's mistakes in the last general election cost it several electoral seats and states including Kedah, I for one would be VERY INTERESTED to hear from the Prime Minister how "the BN would rectify the mistakes and make up by serving the people as best as it can."

Who should we listen to then? I hope the Prime Minister can provide a clear and firm stand on this issue. Yes, THAT is the issue!!!

If there are no clarifications, both statements are neither here nor there and does nothing much for public confidence in the status quo.

[Bergambar & Video] Amerika Dihentam Puting Beliung, 29 Terbunuh

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 02:32 AM PST

Menjelang jam 10 malam, perkhidmatan kaji cuaca mengeluarkan 269 amaran puting beliung, sedangkan hanya 189 amaran dikeluarkan sepanjang Februari. – AP/BH

Not bringing up BN's past mistakes is BIG mistake!

BN has made too many major mistakes for the rakyat to so easily forgive and forget.
If Najib is sincere, he should rectify all the past mistakes - especially, the major ones!
Lynas is a BIG mistake. Will Najib prove his sincerity by shutting down Lynas for good?

Really? Is This So???

Thanks to Angela who told me about the following article. When I read the headline, I thought she was referring to another country but no, she was praising Malaysia. Betulkah?

Please read In your country, people who work hard pay for people who don't want to... We don't understand, say parents of Malaysian 'bad Samaritan' riot victim by Simon Parry in Mail Online.

Here are a few statements extracted from that article:

Extract #1: The parents of the student robbed by thugs posing as 'good Samaritans' during last summer's London riots have accused Britain's welfare state of encouraging people to be lazy.

My response: Please read Dian's comments which are highlighted in YELLOW AT THIS LINK. Dian has given me permission to link back to that article.

Extract from Dian's comment:

From Khazanah to the Bumiputras on the street doing business, the common goal should be to make money and be successful. But this is not the case for most.
Khazanah and the likes are run by people out to squeeze every penny in sight for their own needs, they were groomed and brought up by a mamak who thinks he is the best and that money is free for the taking.

Today we have a Bumiputra class of useless Malays who are arrogant, cannot stand working and clueless as to what they want. These class of Bumiputra enjoy sitting in mamak restaurants and surau to talk cock.
Today Bumiputras who have connection with the authorities can get contracts, projects and money for every damn thing in Malaysia. These Bumiputra do not know how to work. Today many Bumiputras go to the authorities with money in their pockets to bribe and Kow Tim everything. Bumiputras today only know how to use money to exchange for goodies. They do not know the meaning of working long hours, planning, logistic etc and the word to describe is STRUGGLE TO SURVIVE.

CLICK HERE for the rest of Dian's comment.

Extract #2 from the article: 'The system in Britain makes people lazy. In Malaysia, if you want to earn money, you have to work. And if you want to earn more money, you have to study hard.

'In Britain, people who work pay tax and it goes to people who do no work. I don't understand that.'

My response: With the billions of rakyat's money that are being spent in churning out sub-standard graduates that have little or no value, is the situation any different here?

Extract #3 from the article: 'The police in Malaysia would have taken action sooner,' he said.

'Your police let it grow and grow until it was out of control. I don't understand why people were allowed to run riot and rob in that way.

'Here in Malaysia the police can catch you and grab you if you do something wrong. But in Britain it seems that you cannot.'

Malaysia's government is known for being authoritarian, but Mr Rossli said: 'After this happened, people asked Ashraf why he went outside when there were riots and he replied, "Because in Malaysia we are always free to walk outside".

'We have a tough government in Malaysia, but when something like this happens, they take action. They don't let it get out of control. The streets are safe.'

My response: Will they be able to catch those rowdy rabble-rousers at the Penang Anti-Lynas rally? I hope so.

Anyway, do give a response/comment if you can. Take care and have a lovely Sunday!

Keputusan Isu Kedah Esok - Phahrolrazi & Ismail Dijangka Terima Semula Jawatan Exco

Semua jawatankuasa PAS Pusat termasuk timbalan presiden Mohamad Sabu, tiga naib presidennya dan beberapa anggota exco kerajaan Kedah hadir kecuali Dr Ismail.

-mk

Isu Pas Kedah: Phahrolrazi, Ismail kekal Exco?

Lapan Exco Kedah Angkat Sumpah, 2 Exco Lagi Di Majlis Kedua

Where PSM differs with Hindraf by Commander (Rtd) S THAYAPARAN, formerly of the Royal Malaysian Navy

Posted: 03 Mar 2012 10:35 PM PST

This is the final of a two-part interview with Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar. The PSM leader provides insight into what it means to stand apart from the political mainstream but still engage with it.

Click here for Part 1 of the interview.

Malaysiakini: How does a political party like the PSM move beyond its grassroots level, especially since the alternative media is not accessible to most people?

Jeyakumar: One, we take up issues that affect a larger number of people for example the healthcare system, the oversupply of nursing graduates, the GST (Goods and Services Tax), the contractualisation of labour, etc. Initially we were confined in communities facing dire straits, for example eviction, but now we have broadened our reach. Two, we prepare simple pamphlets on all these issues in three languages and distribute these in 'pasar malams', coffee shops and numerous other places.

Three, we do get coverage in the mainstream media when we do things like holding a demo in front of some ministry, or file a case suing the PM's Department, or even holding a press conference. Though the editors have their constraints, many of the reporters on the ground respect the PSM for its principled stances and the fact that there is often substance in what we say.

And I think that we have definitely moved beyond our grassroots bases. We have captured the attention of the Malaysian public, to a degree. And we come out with a whole lot of press statements, pamphlets and small booklets, e.g. my speeches in Parliament. Our analysis is spreading wider than it was four years ago.

Could you cite a situation when the PSM didn't want to compromise its principles even though by doing so, the party would move beyond its grassroots level?

We didn't get on to the Hindraf bandwagon though several politicians from the PR (Pakatan Rakyat) parties did. In late 2007, we were one of the few voices in the opposition that criticised the ideological basis of Hindraf while speaking out against their victimisation by the government.

It is relatively easy to mobilise people using emotive racial arguments, but we feel that will ultimately make it difficult to build the coalition of the "99 percent" that we need to build to restructure our economy and society.

How exactly did the Hindraf wave affect Sungai Siput?

It made some of the voters very angry with (former MIC chief) Samy Vellu who was perceived as being dismissive of the Hindraf movement. It also neutralised his secret weapon.Samy Vellu (left) had managed to get some 3,000 to 5,000 Indians from outside Sungai Siput to register as voters in Sungai Siput. These voters would be bused in on polling day and given money after voting. They gave Samy Vellu a head start in every election. However, more than 50 percent of them got pissed off with him over his mishandling of Hindraf and so they came and voted for me.

What are your impressions of Hindraf now?

The same as it was in 2007 when the movement peaked. I understand the concern and anger that many Indians feel regarding the marginalisation of Indians by BN policy. I respect the courage and sacrifices of the Hindraf activists. I recognise and acknowledge the role Hindraf played in helping creating the March 2008 tsunami.

But Hindraf as a movement is based on an analysis that is past its "use-by" date. It is premised on an ethnic analysis of society, and there isn't much ideologically speaking to differentiate it from either MIC or Perkasa. The PSM has always argued that the marginalised among the Indian community need to form a coalition with the marginalised of other racial groups, including the Malays, to challenge a socio-economic system that is skewed towards the super-rich. This is diametrically opposed to the Hindraf strategy of uniting all Indians to challenge perceived Malay hegemony. The PSM has from the beginning stated this position clearly and openly.

With regards to your comments on Hindraf, do you think that component parties of Pakatan are split along ethnic lines even though they claim to represent all Malaysians?

It is not a contradiction. You can espouse a "Malaysian" outlook despite having a predominance of a particular racial group in your party. It is your analysis of the political and socio-economic system that is important. If you adopt an analysis that is not a race-based, you will be speaking for all oppressed Malaysians even if your membership is more of a particular race. That's one of the differences between the PR parties and the BN parties.

Do you find the lack of backing of large vocal political parties a help or hindrance when it comes to voicing the concerns of your constituents?

We find that the larger parties often are focusing on personality issues of one leader or the other, while the PSM strives to highlight issues affecting the grassroots. It is the mobilisation of the rakyat that highlights issues that we want to bring up. Once the rakyat get involved, the other parties usually will come to show their support.

This is an interesting point. Do you view the PSM's role as a catalyst to get other political parties involved in the process and could you give an example of an issue that PSM brought to the public attention and how other political parties followed?

Yes, a catalyst and a pressure group. For example, we have always been strongly against the setting up of private clinics in government hospitals. When I found out from an answer to a question in Parliament that the government was thinking of extending the private clinic initiative to another four hospitals (in addition to Selayang and Putrajaya), the PSM organised simultaneous pickets in all four hospitals.

The PR parties which hadn't been so concerned by the issue all came out in support of our position when they saw that the general public reacted favourably to our stance. Our annual asset declaration is another example. Now the Penang state government has started the same. We have been on the forefront of the anti-FTA (Free Trade Agreement) movement and the anti-GST group.

Recently we started an expose of the overtraining of nurses by the private colleges, which are driven by the greed for the PTPTN (private higher education) loans. We have also presented a list of 'Peoples' Expectations' to the Pakatan Rakyat leadership in Perak that we want them to implement if they come to power in PRU13 (13th general elections).

What is the difference between your 'Peoples; Expectation' list and the Pakatan manifesto?

I think we, the PSM, are more grounded in the reality that ordinary Malaysians live in. So we have more specific programmes and suggestions. However, there is a fair degree of overlap between the two documents.

Malaysian politics is personality driven and you have achieved an almost cult-like status. Is there a process within the PSM to groom a new generation of leaders?

Yes, there is. We are constantly pushing/encouraging newer and younger members to take up more responsibility. Meeting and discussions are given importance within the PSM. We believe our active members must understand why we take certain decisions. We need to enhance the capacity of our members if we wish to expand our influence. I believe that we have to give younger members room to experiment and grow. The PSM must have an enabling environment for younger leaders to develop.

Could you give us an example of where there was disagreement between (younger) members on the decisions the PSM made?

Example 1, the younger people are generally more gung-ho. Some of them have been pushing for PSM to stand in more seats in PRU13 (we stood candidates in four seats in PRU12). They argue that for the amount of work we do, and the commitment and capacity of our potential candidates, we should be given more seats to contest.

But the majority accepted the argument that PRU13 is about changing the BN and that the general public would think poorly of the PSM if they saw us as the cause of three-cornered fights in several constituencies. Public perception is all-important to any political party as only if the public views us positively can we succeed in winning them over to our position.

Example 2, in Sungai Siput we have taken a decision to do away with the garlanding of leaders in public functions. It's a feudal carry-over and is inimical to the development of true democracy. But when I visit temples during festivals, the temple committees invariably want to garland me. The younger members get upset when I accept the garlanding as they feel we are not keeping to our principles.

However, the older members argue that it would seem disrespectful to refuse, and as we are still in the process of making friends with the temple committees, most of whom were strong MIC supporters; we should not be so inflexible.

What was your impression of the debate between the MCA and DAP?
Don't understand Mandarin. But from the body language, (MCA chief) Dr Chua Soi Lek looked more in control.

And given the opportunity, who would you like to debate and what would the topic be?

The minister of labour - Malaysia's current macro-economic policy is leading to a massive erosion of the rights of our workers. The minister of health - over the 1Care health system. Malaysiakini.

Isteri maut, suami parah

-SH

Lihat isteri digilis

"Saya cuma hairan apabila dia sekali lagi mengambil wuduk walaupun selesai solat Subuh.

The BR1M voucher...

Posted: 03 Mar 2012 08:54 PM PST

Just returned from the Sek Men Kebangsaan Berapit to collect the RM500 BR1M voucher on behalf of my aged aunt. Apart from the RELA people who were directing traffic, there were many helpful volunteers outside the school hall. Was rather surprised to see that everything went smoothly. Left the hall after hardly five minutes with the voucher in my hand.

If you are a wondering whether this is a sell out of my support for the Pakatan Rakyat government, I will say no. If the Barisan Nasional government wants to give the RM500 to my aunt, I say, take lah. We still know who to vote for later. After all, THIS is also my tax money, one way or another. I'd be a fool not to collect it for my aunt. Besides, this RM500 is no big deal. It is just five years of RM100 - what the Penang government is giving to the senior citizens in the state - given in one lump sum.

Now I have to go to the bank in the next one or two days to cash it for her!
