Bersih 3.0 - 428 : What happened to the Ending?

Bersih 3.0 - 428 : What happened to the Ending?

Bersih 3.0 - 428 : What happened to the Ending?

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 11:06 AM PDT

I salute all those who participate in the Bersih 3.0...

Even though i didn't go down to the Bersih 3.0 event venue... I was following the event from a few sources. Lots of valuable pictures shown in the FB, Tweeters and blogs. These pictures has marked the history of Malaysia... How Malaysian can handle the peaceful sit down event.

The Rakyat has so excited and happily to join the march since morning... I saw from the clip and pictuers ... Lots of them posing here and there to take pictures... they sat patiently for hours in front the picker line @ Dataran Merdeka...  So do other cities like Penang, Kuching, Malacca, KK etc.

Unfortunately, the ending of the Bersih 3.0 in Kuala Lumpur was not marked as a happy ending... Tear gas was flying, water canon was splashing... I am confuse now and trying to figure out what has happened to cause the police to fire the tear gas and water canon towards the public.
  1. The main stream media has reported this is because of the Bersih 3.0 team has aggressively attempted to cross the barrier... Is there true?
  2. The public has been sitting there for hours without aggressively trying to break the barrier. Why the breaking of the barrier happened after so many hours. Logically thinking if they want to break the barrier, they would have done it earlier.
  3. There was a man in plain yellow shirt covered his face with bandana trying to kick on the barrier repeatedly and this was from the PDRM clip. And only few of them that tried to break the barrier... Is there any possibility that these people have been hired and used by someone to create the chaos?
  4. There was a report stated that most of the media camera that might have managed to capture the scene being destroyed or suffocated by the police? Is this true? Why the police want to do that?
I have so many question in my mind right now and we really need to take some time to do some research and place all the pictures and clips together to find out the truth... Please do not only look at one side especially those main media which was hiding the truth. We Rakyat want the truth nothing but the TRUTH...

Anyone has anything to share on the Bersih 3.0? especially those who went on the street to experience this...

Look Into My Eyes and Tell Me

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 11:11 AM PDT

In my Facebook page, my favourite quotation listed is by Spencer K. Kimball:

Love people, not things; Use things, not people.

How many of you have experienced situations where so-called friends are nice to you and then once their objectives are met would not go near you with a ten-foot pole? Think. Recall. Reflect.

I am sure some of you must have had your fair share of relating to such Tupperware characters, if you get my drift..

In life, sincerity is of prime importance in our endeavour to be human and humane. It does not cost much to be sincere, kind or sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. Yet, around us lurk double-faced fiends who say one thing and mean another. There are just far too many lies and pretentiousness in this world. Regardless of how far mankind has progressed, I reckon that more and more have lost touch with their hearts, souls and sensitivity to their spirit and what it means to be a friend, to be human.

It is not a question of sentimentalism or different personalities ranging from melancholic, sanguine, choleric or phlegmetic. It is a matter of the heart. Sincerity.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, "What is uttered from the heart alone, Will win the hearts of others to your own."

Whilst I agree with Goethe, I surmise it does not apply to those whose hearts are Glad-wrapped so tightly with pseudo-sincerity that by the time reality hits, it is by far too late for the pain of being deceived is like a bolt of lightning that can kill.

It is not worth losing sleep over those who have hurt us but it IS worth it if we chance upon unexpected folks who, in time, turn out to be a friend closer than a brother.

In 2008, I got to know a friend with whom I could click with instantly. We could share so much and talk nineteen to a dozen. Alas, I was too naive to appreciate his wisdom when he advised me to be wiser in my judgement of people. Naturally I was indignant but four years down the road, I can attest to the truth of his observation and advice. We drifted apart and lost touch for three and a half years. I called him a fortnight ago over some sad news and whilst the circumstance was a sorrowful one, it was good to reconnect. I am not sure if that friendship can ever be restored, but I hope it will, idealistic as it may seem.

I have come to realize that as we move on in life, there are some things we want to hold on to and some we wish to let go.

It is the same with friendships. Sometimes, dreamers and idealistic ones like me might not have the wisdom to discern when a person is sincere. But when we can truly see people as who they are, not what they want us to think they are, then we know it is time to move on.

How sincere then should we be to people? My response: VERY SINCERE. If the other party is not, then it is his/her loss in life. Oscar Wilde said, "A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal." Very true indeed.

Four years down the road, I still know and believe that the friend I lost in 2008 is a very good person at heart. To find people like him who are upright in principles and speak HONESTLY and SINCERELY without mincing their words, without deception or lies - is indeed a rarity.

But when you do find such a person, treasure, cherish and value that friendship. I still do, despite the drift, and can never forget the exchange of ideals, hopes and aspirations we once shared. - simply, succinctly and most of all sincerely. To this day, I still read the emails he sent me filled with advice, exhortation and even rebuke - all written sincerely. I doubt he still reads my blog today but if by chance he is reading this: Thank you for everything - from the bottom of my heart.

This I believe - if a person can look at you in the eyes when talking to you, then you know he is sincere. If they look away in a conversation, the writing is on the wall. That friend had the most piercing eyes that seemed as if he could look into my soul. Perhaps he did - he saw the good and the bad in me, and cared enough to tell me how I could be more than who I am today. And that, dear readers, is a true friend indeed.

Here's a list of quotations on sincerity to help us all reflect on this rare quality - sincerity- that is diminishing in modern society.

"The worst vice of a fanatic is his sincerity."
Oscar Wilde Quotes

"Time goes by fast, and people go in and out of your life so quickly, so you should never miss the opportunity to tell these people how much they mean to you"
Pablo Picasso Quotes

"To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; credible we must be truthful."
Edward R. Murrow Quotes

"Fear is not in the habit of speaking truth; when perfect sincerity is expected, perfect freedom must be allowed; nor has anyone who is apt to be angry when he hears the truth any cause to wonder that he does not hear it."

Publius Cornelius Tacitus Quotes
"How can sincerity be a condition of friendship? A taste for truth at any cost is a passion which spares nothing."

Albert Camus Quotes
"One of the hardest things in this world is to admit you are wrong. And nothing is more helpful in resolving a situation than its frank admission."

Benjamin Disraeli Quotes
"So let us begin anew - remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof"

John Fitzgerald Kennedy Quotes
"Sincerity makes the very least person to be of more value than the most talented hypocrite."

Charles Haddon Spurgeon Quotes
"Sincerity is the highest compliment you can pay."

Ralph Waldo Emerson Quotes
"Sincerity and truth are the basis of every virtue"

Confucius Quotes
"Always be sincere, whether you mean it or not."

Graffiti Quotes
"Enthusiasm is the genius of sincerity and truth accomplishes no victories without it."
Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton Quotes

"The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fake that, you've got it made."
Jean Giraudoux Quotes

"A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal."
Oscar Wilde Quotes

"The egoism which enters into our theories does not affect their sincerity; rather, the more our egoism is satisfied, the more robust is our belief."
George Eliot Quotes

"Every man alone is sincere. At the entrance of a second person, hypocrisy begins."
Ralph Waldo Emerson Quotes

May each one of us be true and sincere and live exemplary lives that we may be an inspiration to those we love.

Nice BERSIH 3.0 Video By Lumierasia

Nice BERSIH 3.0 Video By Lumierasia – BERSIH 3.0 is over now, while waiting for me to upload some of the photos I have taken at the BERSIH rally, here I want to share a nice video about BERSIH 3.0 by Lumierasia which is shot and edited on the same day (SDE). It's really tiring day. Many news and media has reported about it, but the best part is not watching them on TV, it's seeing people uploading those unseen footage on Facebook and Internet.

I did not stay till the end, I guess I did my parts, experienced it and I wish all the best to the coming General Election of Malaysia.

Orang ramai kemudiannya mula melaungkan, Bersih!

Orang ramai kedengaran melaungkan "Rakyat Melayu Rakyat Malaysia, Rakyat Cina Rakyat Malaysia, Rakyat India, Rakyat Malaysia".

Do not believe in housing scam

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 08:30 AM PDT

As reported in The Star

Exco man: No 'under-the-table' money for projects

THE public is advised not to fall prey by paying between RM5,000 and RM10,000 to unscrupulous syndicates which promise to secure low-cost (LC) or low medium-cost (LMC) units.

Penang Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said several syndicate members were going around promising applicants that they would get a unit at certain projects for a fee.

"The public should not believe such scams.

"We have never introduced such a policy," he told a press conference in Komtar.

He was commenting on talks that the public could pay 'under-the-table' money of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 to secure a unit in a project in Sungai Ara.

At the same press conference, Wong urged eligible individuals to submit applications for i-Park (an LC project) in Sungai Ara and Taman Bukit Erskine (an LMC pro-ject) near Lebuhraya Halia in Tanjung Tokong as soon as pos-sible.

"To date, 1,500 people have obtained the PN1 forms (for new LC applicants) while another 866 applicants have submitted their appeal to the Penang Housing Department for i-Park units.

"Meanwhile, out of the 554 LMC units in Taman Bukit Erskine, 303 applicants have accepted the offer," he said.

"The remaining 251 units are still available to eligible applicants," he said.
The Taman Bukit Erskine pro-ject, developed by Ivory Villas Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary company of Ivory Properties Group Berhad, is now 30% completed and ex- pected to be fully completed in 2014.

Housing Assistance to the poor

The siblings - Sow Sam Oy, 27, Kuen Chun, 26, and Kuen Lik, 23, who lost their mother Ooi Hai Keok, in a road accident last December, were offered a three-bedroom unit at the Sri Saujana apartments on Macallum Street Ghaut and are now in the midst of securing a bank loan.

State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai made the offer after their plight was highlighted in The Star on Feb 14.

A donor who only wanted to be known as Cheah, handing over a cheque for RM4,200 to Sow Kuen Lik as 10 percent deposit for a new low cost flat (RM42,000). Looking on is Wong.

Wong said a donor who only wanted to be known as Cheah, had presented a cheque for RM4,200 to Kuen Lik as deposit for the RM42,000 low cost unit last week.

"We are very grateful because we will have a place to call our own one day.
"All this while we have been renting a flat in Jelutong for RM450," Kuen Lik said.

Kuen Lik, a storekeeper, said he is trying to secure a bank loan to purchase the unit.

His salesgirl sister Sam Oy, was elated.

"No words can express how thankful we are to The Star, the state government and the public.

"Kuen Chun (who is mildly autistic) was out of work since our mother's death but is now employed by a private hospital to work in their canteen," she said.
Job offers had poured in for Kuen Chun from various firms after their story was published.

On Dec 13 last year, it was reported that a youth had allegedly knocked his car into Ooi, a widow, near SMK George Town in Batu Lancang. She was flung some 10m from her motorcycle from the impact.

The driver allegedly lost control of the car before hitting the wall of the Batu Lancang cemetery and then sped off.

Ooi was on her way to fetch Kuen Chun home from work from a fast food outlet nearby.

When she was alive, Ooi earned RM600 monthly as a coffeeshop helper.
After her demise, her eldest daughter, Sam Oy, struggled to keep the grieving family from falling apart.

With a meagre household income of about RM1,000, the three siblings have had to dig deep just to put food on the table before generous readers and a non-governmental organisation stepped in to help.

Affordable homes for the needy at Rifle Range Flats

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 08:22 AM PDT

As reported in The Star.

Affordable homes for the needy

ALL units in two blocks of Rifle Range flats in Penang which were formerly used as army quarters have been rented out to the needy.

The keys to the remaining 77 units, all one-bedroom flats, were given out to applicants who comprised the poor, the disabled, senior citizens and single parents.

A total of 93 two-bedroom units were rented out last year.

The two 16-storey blocks (E and J) with 170 units were once army quarters but left vacant for more than 10 years after the soldiers moved out, said Penang Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

He said the state government spent more than RM400,000 to repair, refurbish and repaint both blocks in stages from 2008 to 2011.

He said the flats were rented out at a minimal cost of RM90 for a one-bedroom unit and RM110 for a two-bedroom unit.

Wong was speaking to reporters after handing out keys to the 77 successful applicants recently at the Penang Municipal Council hall in Rifle Range.

Stroke patient Chong Loy Kwong, 46, said he could now heave a sigh of relief as he, his wife and four children could now stay at a flat for only RM90 per month.

He currently rents a unit for RM400 in Bandar Baru Air Itam.
Chong, who gives English language tuition to support his family, said it was a good initiative by the authorities to ease the burden of the poor.

Single father Hussin Ahmad, 58, said he previously paid RM400 for a single-bedroom flat in Kuala Sri Pinang.

"I can now save up for other things as my salary as a security guard is not much plus I have three school-going children to care for," said Hussin.

Single mother Ang Yeok Heang, 63, said she was thankful that her burden had been lightened.

Wong, in his speech at the key handing-over ceremony, said the initiative to rent out the flats was part of the state government's effort in providing affordable homes at minimal rental cost for those who needed such homes.

Apart from the RM400,000 spent on refurbishing the two blocks, Wong said RM250,000 more was spent to refurbish, repaint and upgrade units in six more blocks in Rifle Range.

"Repair works on the sewer system and pipes have also started in all high-rise blocks there," he added.

Polis samseng ada senjata, 'perusuh' tanpa senjata

BERSIH Live Report

BERSIH 3.0: Tembakan air dan gas pemedih mata

LAPORAN LANGSUNG

9.20pm Ketua Polis Negara Tan Sri Haji Ismail Omar berharap petugas "yang dicederakan perusuh" segera sembuh dan mendapat rehat secukupnya sebelum kembali bertugas seperti biasa.

Menurut Facebook polis, beliau berbangga dengan keberanian yang ditunjukkan seluruh anggota polis ketika Op Aman 3.

Kenapa Ismail Omar tidak berharap semua yang cedera disebabkan serangan 'betubi-tubi' polis segera sembuh?

Polis tak berhati perut!

Podah!

The RM20 million cop!

Itulah PDRM kini.

Three young Hindu women forced to marry three Muslim men against their will

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 07:16 AM PDT

Catholic activists urge the Supreme Court to stop violations and protect abuse victims. They appeal on behalf of three young Hindu women forced to marry three Muslim men against their will. In a "male dominated, violent and bigoted environment," women cannot truly exercise free will.
Islamabad (AsiaNews) - In a press release sent to AsiaNews, Fr Emmanuel Yousaf Masi and Peter Jacob, respectively the national director and executive secretary of the Catholic Church's National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP), call on the Supreme Court of Pakistan to stop forced conversions, protect the victims of abuses, ensure justice and enforce respect for human rights. In the statement, the Christian activists urge the highest court in the land to reopen the case of three young Hindu women (Rinkel Kumari, Asha Haleema and Lata) who were forced to convert to Islam and marry three Muslim men. For the NCJP officials, Pakistan's legal system has become a source of injustice because the principle of 'free consent' is applied loosely or selectively, in disregard of thesocial realities and the circumstances of life.

In fact, not only in the "above mentioned cases but in many cases of so-called conversions of minority women, the courts have overlooked ascertaining the age of the converted and whether the marrying male (Bashir Ahmad) had taken permission from his first wife according to Muslim Personal Law," the two NCJPofficials write. Applying the principle of free will without looking at the evidence in a social context in which religious freedom and gender equality are a pipe dream can result in the miscarriage of justice. In a "male dominated, violent and bigoted environment," the law and the courts cannot work on that assumption that armed and unarmed, minority and majority, men and women enjoy the same scope of free will. The ruling by the Supreme Court on 18 April to hand over the women to their husbands raises grave concerns among religious minorities at a time of rising "religious intolerance" and demographic decline.

For this reason, the NCJP wants the court to examine the case in question more closely and look more carefully at the repercussions its ruling might have. For the Catholic agency, the decision should have been informed by the "legal principles of safeguarding the vulnerable." For Fr Masi and Peter Jacob, "The Supreme Court or the Government can control the damage to religious diversity by defining forced conversion according to international standards of religious freedom which inter alia includes a right to re-convert" to one's former religion. In this sense, "If a conversion comes simultaneously with marriage and the newly converted cannot meet her parents, then it is not an exercise of free choice of religion". Asia News

[Gambar & Video] Kezaliman Polis: Tembak Gas Pemedih & Rempuh Orang Awam Di Sogo

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 07:44 AM PDT

Beberapa orang pemimpin, termasuk ahli jawatankuasa pemandu BERSIH Wong Chin Huat, Naib Presiden PAS Mahfuz Omar, Salahuddin Ayub, Timbalan Presiden PKR Azmin Ali, Naib Presiden PKR Tian Chua, dan pemimpin mahasiswa menyampaikan ucapan mereka.

-MR

Polis tembak gas pemedih mata

"Baru terkena gas pemedih mata, Perit. Sakit. Ada yang pengsan. Moga Allah balas perbuatan zalim mereka," tulis beliau menerusi twitter.

Malaysians clash with police at rally for reform

Malaysian police have fired tear gas and water cannons at thousands of protesters gathered in Kuala Lumpur's central square.

Witnesses say the protesters trampled through barbed-wire barricades set up around the heavily-guarded Merdeka Square, in defiance of a court order that had banned them from the square.

Protesters also battled with police at a train station nearby, throwing bottles and chairs at officers who responded by firing tear gas rounds.

Most of the protesters had dispersed about an hour after the violence began, but several hundred remained and were still taunting police.

Australian Independent Senator Nick Xenophon is in Kuala Lumpur and says he has seen the police teargassing the crowd.

"The police have lobbed at least a dozen canisters that I've seen in my immediate vicinity," he said.

"We've seen people here who've collapsed, who've been vomiting as a result of the tear gas and some people have become quite ill.

"Even though I'm a couple of hundred metres away from it it's actually starting to sting.

"It's just an extraordinary scene. There is a bit of panic here. It's getting pretty messy here and there's a bit of a crush in the crowd."

Political risks

The violence could carry risks for prime minister Najib Razak if it is seen as unjustified.

Mr Najib's approval rating tumbled after July last year when police were accused of a heavy-handed response to the last major electoral reform rally by the group.

There are suggestions he could delay elections, which must be called by next March but which could be held as early as June.

Some media sites put the number of protesters as high as 50,000, which would make it the biggest since Reformasi demonstrations in 1998 against then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.

In Melbourne, hundreds of people staged a rally in support of the Malaysian protesters.

Victorian MP Hong Lim told the crowd the protesters were fighting for much-needed democratic reform.

"To see, to hear the younger generation of Malaysia, who talk profoundly of their country and their concern for the country, and not about Chinese, and not about Malay, and not about India but Malaysia, Malaysia - it's so touching," he said as the crowd cheered him on.

Bersih 428

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 06:07 AM PDT

I've been complaining about the government and what crooks they are but haven't really done anything about it. Talk is cheap they say so today I decided to join the thousands of my fellow Malaysians and march up (or tried to anyway) to Dataran Merdeka (Freedom Square for the benefits of two of my overseas readers) for the Bersih 3.0 rally!

It was an experience to treasure, mingling around with thousands of people from this country irrespective of race, religious beliefs and the like. For that 6 hours or so that I was there, we were all just Malaysians and none of that PM's 1Malaysia nonsense either, it was just plain, true and pure Malaysians who wanted a change in this country.

It was a decision that wasn't hard to make. The wife wanted to go but we didn't want to take the chance of anything happening to both of us and the children would be all alone at home so I went on behalf of both of us. We don't trust the the Police and DBKL (the town council) as they're all just stooges for the government. They wouldn't let this rally go by peacefully so it was better for one of us to stay home, besides she was with me in my heart all through the rally.

I woke up early and headed into town to park as close as I possibly could seeing as how the freaking cops had already started blocking all the access roads to Dataran Merdeka as early as the night before. I had planned to park in Bangsar and walk all the way to one of the planned rally meeting points about 3-4 kilometers away (one way). Now here is where my running training came in real handy. The 3-4 kilometer walk felt like a really slow LSD session ... LOL!

Anyways, true enough, on the way there I encountered the cops making a human chain across the roads and trying to deter us from reaching the main rally point. Not to be deterred, we just found another way there and sneaked our way around the boys in blue. I was a little emotional seeing so many people of different ages and races all being one and helping each other to find the best and safest way towards the rally point that I think there really is hope for this country after all, if only we could unseat the dictatorial regime, note I use the words 'regime' here cos that's what they are!

Anyways, I finally make my way through the blazing late morning sun towards Dataran Merdeka only to come face to face with barricades and razor wires strung across the roads leading to the rally location taking away my democratic rights of going where I want to. There was already close to a thousand, by my estimate, people there facing off the cops by just sitting peacefully and chanting inspirational messages so I decided to stay there with them and wait till 2.00pm which was when the actual 'duduk bantah' (sitting protest) would begin for two hours.

I had a field day snapping pictures of the event as proof of how many people attended the rally. Unfortunately I wish I had some duracell procell aaa handy cos my cell was running low on battery from all those pictures and videos I was snapping.

The FRU cordoning off the road towards Dataran ...
The people were all passionate about why they were there. The national anthem was sung on many occasions and I can't remember it being more meaningful than all those times I had to sing it every Monday morning during assembly back in my school days! I can't even remember a time I sang the national anthem with such pride!

The sun was blazing and by then the crowd started to swell. I can't really say how many there were at this location (there were a few other rally points) but I'd estimate close to a few thousand fellow Malaysians. Since we couldn't go pass the barricades and were also told not to by the event chairperson and marshals, we all sat there to protest for a clean and fair elections which was the agenda of this rally anyway.

Welcome to Tel Aviv ala Malaysia ...
Fortunately nothing untoward happened, though I was bracing for the worse and managed to head home peacefully. Unfortunately, by the time I got home, the wife told me that the cops fired tear gas and water canons at people who were leaving the rally without being provoked by anyone, at least that's what I read on Facebook and Twitter anyway. I don't really know what actually happened at that locations but a lot or reports came in saying they were shot at for no reason. It's as if the government weren't happy that we Malaysians acted civil during the sit in protest and wanted to teach us a lesson as we were leaving.

All that is unconfirmed anyway as it didn't happen where I was but knowing the way the government think, I wouldn't put it pass them to do something like that. I read a lot of people were hurt and arrested and I truly and sincerely hope that they're okay. I suppose I'll know more as the reports flow in on Facebook and Twitter. I'm not going to bother with the government controlled main stream media who are probably going to twist the facts anyway.

Was it worth it? To walk to and fro, close to 12 kilometers? To be baked in the sun for close to 6 hours? To shout myself hoarse demanding for my rights? You bet your bottom dollar it was. I'm fed up of being taken for a fool by the idiots in Putrajaya. I'm fed up of them stealing from us, living it up while I have to work like a slave for every single cent I earn just to put food on the table. I'm fed up with them telling me to live moderately while they live in million dollar bungalows and drive around in expensive sports cars.

It's time we all stand up and demand for what is ours. Besides I NEVER voted this incompetent prime minister and his deputy into power and I'm sure neither did a lot of you. I demand for somebody better to bring this country out of the rut it is in and that can only start with a fair and clean elections. Something the dictatorial regime knows they will lose hands down if they don't cheat, which is why they're so against this rally for a fair and clean elections.

Let's get real, if they lost, they'd lose their only source of stealing money from us and they'd probably end up in prison once the opposition takes over and uncovers all their illegals dealings while they were in power. So yes, I would say it was worth every bit of my time and effort to be alongside my fellow Malaysians today and I would do it all over again if need to!

428 Bersih 3.0 In Sibu

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 05:34 AM PDT

Sibu is not behind in Bersih 3.0 movement! The peaceful sit-down demonstration was held at Chuan Corridor this afternoon from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Sibu police issued permit for 428 Bersih 3.00 to go ahead. The scorching sun did nothing at all to deter the crowds from gathering at Chuan Corridor for good cause. A big thumb up to them!

We did it!

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 07:49 AM PDT

I'm proud to be Malaysian today.

A week ago, it seemed that Bersih 3 was not gaining traction. Then the federal government did something quite predictable and developed a  hardline stand on the sit-in.

That gave hope to Malaysians, who would have thought that with such serious electoral fraud, they have finally felt secure in giving us the paltry reforms. We could have walked all we want and it would not have affected the outcome of the elections.

But apparently, the vote rigging etc is not severe enough that there is still a chance for Malaysians to create parity and bring free and fairness to the electoral process.

Police, in their typical conservative estimate, put the KL crowd at 25,000. News media put it at 80,000. Bersih puts it at 300,000. Including gatherings around the country, even the most conservative median will far exceed 100,000. Everyone of us has at least a 100 friends, relatives, colleagues and contacts. That's bringing supporters of free and fair elections to at least 10 million - out of total eligible voters of about 13 million. It has to send BN into a panic mode, and for that, Bersih 3 is a resounding success.

Yet, as I read how some PKR party leaders were rallying the crowd, I have mixed feelings. Ambiga already called it mission accomplish, and DAP and PAS followed to disperse. But PKR on the other hand appears to whip the crowd into frenzy to breach the barricade. For me, if true, that's hijacking Bersih 3, and its steering committee's expressed wish that there be no breaching any obstruction. Not only will PKR misread the sentiment of the crowd, they will likely do greater harm to the credibility of Bersih 3 steering committee.

No doubt the police should not under any circumstances fire tear gas, spray chemically laced water or make arrests on peaceful protestors, or chase after the protestors for a single act for breaching the barricade, for which they will be locally and internationally condemned, along with Hisham and Najib, but what PKR has purportedly done will certainly mar an otherwise stellar performance by Bersih 3.0.

I was there. We were merely 100m away from Dataran. We could have dispersed peacefully. Yet we did not. Why? Was it because PKR leaders got carried away? Or were there agent provocateurs? I would suggest that PKR makes haste to explain their side of the story and apologise to Bersih 3.0 steering committee if indeed they got carried away. Otherwise, if I were Bersih, I'd never invite PKR to another of my function, because the authorities will say - you may say one thing, but your invitees do something else - how to trust you? Wong Chin Huat may have stepped up to say Bersih lost crowd control after Ambiga gave the instruction to disperse, but I believe PKR, especially Azmin Ali should be man enough not to take Bersih steering committee's mea culpa as end of story, but accept responsibility, if he did ask the crowd to breach the barrier.

Think of the near future. If there is a need for Bersih 4, or to have a rally over some other cause, is it better for Bersih to have credibility or you? You may have all the credibility but as an opposition leader, the government wouldn't even entertain you. If Bersih remains credible, at least there is room to negotiate with the government and do something different. It may not even come to be about another cause. From now on, when Bersih steering committee engages the elections commission or some UMNO ilk in a debate, you will find a common refrain from the other side that they are being used by opposition parties, and this time some people will buy such an allegation.

No matter, Bersih 3.0 turned out to be a resounding success. If BN sits on this, they are digging their own political grave. Malaysians want a clean electoral roll. They want those dastardly Election Offences amendments rolled back. And they want other reform measures put in place before the next elections. If UMNO/BN does not move on this, there will be Bersih 4.0. And this time the crowd control will be so tight that it will absolutely, utterly, completely, spell doom for BN's electoral chances. The choice is with BN. Be beaten because everyone think's you're a fraud, or be beaten in a fair fight.  If you fight in a fair fight, at least there's still a chance for you to win. I'd think you want to keep your heads high and take the second option.

Nothing But the Truth, Please

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 02:52 AM PDT

To me, honesty and integrity are very important in every area of life, especially in friendship. If a person has no qualms about lying to another for whatever reason -  be it a friend or to someone who regards that person as a friend, then regardless of whatever noble values he or she claims to possess, all else would come to naught. Would that person still command the respect of others once lies are uncovered?

Where my classes are concerned, I always remind students to tell me nothing but the truth. If they have not met deadlines, all I ask for is the truth. If they have been tardy or indisciplined, just tell me and I will give them an extension after a long lecture about commitment and dedication.

I always tell them to submit original work and not plagiarized works or worse still, a jigsaw puzzle of plagiarised works.

What good is education, status and recognition if one can lie through their teeth?

Once a friend lies to another, the trust and whatever shared is broken. For some, it takes years to re-build that trust. For others, it may never be salvaged again. Of course there is the question of forgiveness. Whatever the case, I always believe that we must tell the truth and maintain high standards of integrity lest  IF we have a conscience.

I remember reading a quotation about how there are those who "will not tolerate such emotional honesty in communication. They would rather defend their dishonesty on the grounds that it might hurt others. Therefore, having rationalized their phoniness into nobility, they settle for superficial relationships".

And such people may never learn how to care or to feel for others. Perhaps they don't even care for themselves or unable to come to terms with this thing called 'feelings' or 'emotions' because to them, it is likely that only lesser beings care too much.

Here's an article I read today which resonates with my stand on honesty and integrity. If there is anything I HATE most in life, it would be liars, hypocrites and pretenders.

According to Gary King:

  • The Five Levels of Truth-Telling:
  • First, you tell the truth to yourself about yourself.
  • Then you tell the truth to yourself about another.
  • At the third level, you tell the truth about yourself to another.
  • Then you tell your truth about another to that other.
  • And finally, you tell the truth to everyone about everything. ~ Neale Donald Walsch Conversations with God (Book 2)
