Political Labels - Define and Divide?

Political Labels - Define and Divide?

Political Labels - Define and Divide?

"It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences." Audre Lorde

It is not a black and world in which we live. Sometimes, there are different shades of black or white. So often, one may air their views in sincerity and be totally unprepared for the backlash that ensues. Whatever the case, I always advocate that we use our minds to reason, critically analyze and judge for ourselves, what is true, reasonable and acceptable because of evidence that demands a verdict. Just because one may be concerned about another aspect of a situation does not necessarily mean one is a mole, traitor or has been bought etc.

It is funny how while we advocate freedom of speech and yet when we air our views, fireworks may go off. No one is identical, not even twins. Even if some views may differ, let us accept opposing views and find out more about the other side. If it is valid to reject it, by all means do so but that should never affect our perception of the other person.

A very good example is how many have gone to town after Tunku Aziz aired his views recently. I have great respect for this learned, articulate and fair Senator and regardless of whatever differences, if any, would not change my opinion of Tunku.

Each of us has been given a mind to think, reason and to make decisions. Not everyone will agree with everything I post. In fact, there are times when I do not agree with some parts of extracted articles but that does not mean I disregard it completely. Hence, I keep the good and disregard the bad and still post it for what it is worth. Besides, most if not all of us are capable of judging for ourselves what is acceptable, believable, credible and noteworthy.

Hence, I wish to state clearly the importance of judging all we read, hear etc critically and analytically. We cannot simply put a blanket label that so and so or this and that is not good.Think, judge, assess and decide. For me, judgement is the prerogative of the Almighty.

A lot of this happens with political labelling - somewhat like other forms of labelling. After it is defined, does it divide?

Here's an interesting write up taken from HERE.

How Do Political Labels Define and Divide Us?

I often wondered when I was a younger man why there were so many different music labels. The music stores would classify music as Hard Rock, Reggae, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop, Jazz, or Alternative. These are just a few examples of the cornicopia of music labels they utilized. What were the purposes of these labels? Music publishing companies need a way to categorize their music to make it easier to market to different segments of the general public.

This also generally holds true when it comes politics. Politicians and political parties run their election campaigns the same way marketing and advertising executives run product campaigns. They pick a catchy label that they feel will define and explain their candidate in a favorable way to the voting public. They also use labels to portray their opponents in an unfavorable light. This all results in a myriad of artificial labels that political operatives create to define their candidates and separate them from their opponents.

Identity politics has been created this way and it polarizes different political factions in the United States. My goal with this article is to identify and define the most prevalent labels on our political spectrum and within our two major political parties. I will attempt to show both the differences and the commonalities amongst these labels. Then I will describe to you what all of this labeling does to our political discourse and landscape. Finally I will describe what we can do to sift through this political brush and see what is going on more clearly. Both sides seek to confuse the public while demonizing their opponents while placing themselves in the best possible light.

The two major political labels that illustrate the opposite poles on our political spectrum are liberal and conservative. They are colloquially called left wing and right wing respectively. The liberals or left wing represents individuals who feel that government should have an expansive role in servicing its citizens and a moderate role in protecting them. They generally feel that government is and should be a positive entity. The conservative or right wing represents individuals who feel that government should have a very limited role in servicing its citizens and a more robust role in protecting them. They generally feel that government is in most cases a negative entity upon its citizens. This is the political spectrum that the various political groups and labels lie. I will now illustrate these various groups and the labels that have been assigned to them.

Let me start by examining some of the labels on the Democratic party side. There are less of them in our current era than for the Republicans. This is probably the case because the Republicans have been so effective in demonizing some Democrats with their labels. The Republicans have been successful in turning the term Liberal Democrat into a perjorative term. A good deal of the American population are unaware of most of the definitions of the political labels. The constant drumbeat of the Republicans have turned the label Liberal into an instantly negative image. Conservative Republican views on government administration are so diametrically opposed to Liberal Democrats that they naturally feel the urge to demonize them to the general public. Republicans have been enormously successful since the early 1980's in portraying Liberals as out of touch with most Americans. Further they have instilled into the minds of many that Liberals do not hold the same moral values as the majority of the American people. This fallacy is the result of a relentless and effective marketing campaign by Republicans. Liberal Democrats have been relatively asleep during this process. As a result, most Liberals have changed their brand name to Progressives. Their governmental view has not changed. They still believe that government should perform a prominent role in helping American citizens "progress" further in their economic security. Another prominent label within the Democratic party are the moderate Democrats. This group basically believes that government should have a less expansive role than Progressives advocate for. They are still progressive or liberal when it comes to social causes such as the environment, abortion, gay rights, and many others. A final group that I would like to highlight are the so called Blue Dog Democrats. This faction is much more conservative on social issues and taxes. They do generally profess that they wish to preserve the strength of the American social safety net. There we have the three major labels and factions that currently hold sway within the Democratic party. Progressives are the most liberal. Moderates are as the name suggests in the middle. The Blue Dog Democrats are the most conservative.

The Republican party has many more labels in circulation than the Democrats currently have. The reason for this is that they are the party most in flux in our current political environment. The principal reason for this is the rise of the Tea Party. Let us first examine the most obvious label and group which also happens to be the one that is disappearing before our eyes. These are the moderate Republicans. They tend to vote conservatively but not strictly so. They are willing to vote with Democrats on issues they believe in. These Republicans are also more willing to compromise to achieve outcomes that they consider important. Another common label within the Republican party is that of the Social Conservatives. This group is generally religiously based. They believe that Christian tenets should strongly influence our governance. The constitutional concept of "Separation of Church and State" within the First Amendment is illegitimate to them. Their major causes are making abortion illegal, opposing gay rights and gay marriage, and opposing fetal stem cell research. Another major group within the Republican party are the Neoconservatives. Defense and foreign policy are their major areas of expertise. They advocate for a robust foreign policy where the United States asserts its military muscle to shape world events to ensure its national security. They are also willing to strenuously push for freedom and democracy in the world including the use of force to make that happen. Libertarians are another classification of politicians within the Republican party who have historically run on their own party line. They seem to have become incorporated into the party over the last several years. This has mostly been by way of Rep. Ron Paul and his son Sen. Rand Paul. Libertarians believe that government should stay out of the lives of its citizens as much as possible. They believe that government should provide for basic defense and the maintenance of civil order.

Akibat Keganasan Polis Semasa BERSIH 3.0, Rating Najib Jatuh Balik

Posted: 06 May 2012 08:15 AM PDT

Bersih 3.0: PRU13 mungkin dianjak lagi

-Subky Latif /HD

Najib, govt remain intact, says The Economist

Posted: 06 May 2012 05:57 AM PDT

No matter how dirty Bersih is, PM Najib and his government remain intact. In fact, Anwar and his team got lots of explanation to do on post-April 28 rally which put the Opposition in a limbo, especially in the eyes of their foreign supporters.

Influential world-class publication The Economist assessed Bersih 3.0 as something the Opposition could have skipped or cancelled as it failed to signify their true demand for a just poll. The episode too pictures them as a rebel group trying to run down the government by force, by coup.

"Bersih 3.0 has done little to shake Datuk Seri Najib Razak's reformist image... and unlike last year, the political impact from this year's event was likely minimal.

"It is clear that Bersih won't be able to dominate the moral high ground - at least not on the score of one weekend's theatrics - as they did last year. The campaign for electoral reform goes on, but Mr Najib emerges from this year's fracas with his reformist credentials essentially intact, not much worse for the wear," said The Economist in an article dated May 1.

It also described this year's rally as more of a 'score-draw' and that although there were recurrences of police brutality, the violent actions of some Bersih protesters attacking and overturning a police car 'played into the government's hands'.

It says, this has allowed PM Najib to claim that the police were the 'victims' in the rally and even made Bersih co-chairman Ambiga Sreenevasan concede that some people would think that the rally had gone wrong because of the unruly behaviour of some protesters.

Ambiga had, during a press conference after the rally, said it was the police who 'drew first blood'. However, Bukit Aman video footage proved otherwise, especially when the protesters tore down barricades at the Dataran Merdeka.

The Economist also questioned Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's presence during the April 28 rally, saying that he had some explaining to do with regards to accusations that he had incited Bersih supporters to push aside police barriers.

"He was caught on video near one of the police barriers talking to one of his colleagues; critics allege that he was inciting supporters to push aside the barriers. Mr Anwar himself says this is nonsense," said the article.

It stated that since the embarrassment faced by Najib in his administration's handling of last year's Bersih rally, the government had repealed a slew of outdated and repressive laws to win back its reforming credentials.

"Bersih rallies have quickly established themselves as something of a ritual in Malaysia's political calendar...the only significant variant is the political impact. Last year it was huge - this year it will probably be very little."

In an interview with Radio Australia on Tuesday, Anwar denied that his hand gesture, as shown on the video footage, was a signal to protestors to breach the barricades, instead claiming that it meant 'negotiate with the police'.

Such an analysis by The Economist will probably spur others to reconsider their 'supportive' notes for Bersih. Knowing how much The Economist had criticised Malaysia, especially during the tenure of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the premier, its latest article is believed not as trying to play chummy with Najib but was merely based on true observation.

By logic, The Economist got nothing to lose if it sways toward the Opposition. However, I personally believe it upholds professionalism more than producing lies, like the Opposition media does!

Racial unity: True Malaysian lies by Commander (Rtd) S THAYAPARAN, formerly of the Royal Malaysian Navy

Posted: 06 May 2012 05:49 AM PDT

A party of order or stability, and a party of progress or reform, are both necessary elements of a healthy state of political life. - John Stuart Mill

COMMENT In her 'Ikim Views' piece 'Impact of racial unity' (The Star, April 17) senior researcher Enizahura Adbul Aziz rather disingenuously poses the question, "If others can appreciate what the country has achieved so far in managing our racial and cultural diversity, why can't we?" The answer to this question is simple and I suspect Enizahura knows this. We can't appreciate what the country has done in terms of managing its racial and cultural diversity because we know the truth. The whole article is a rather limp apologia for the existing 'power-sharing formula' of the Umno regime which has failed this country but more importantly its citizens.

Even though Enizahura conveniently (and mistakenly, in my opinion) hangs her justification for the BN post-Merdeka 'power sharing' ideology on that old Mill's (John Stuart) hook of plurality being an impediment to truly "free democratic institutions"*, what I find troubling is the writer's total silence of the Umno reality which makes a mockery of those democratic ideals like "ensuring the creation and continuation of a government system that is legitimate, effective and representative of the various segments that exist in society" that Enizahura gives prominence to in lieu of those ideals like "observing one's rights and freedom" which the Umno regime daily seems to want to curtail.

NONEI would argue that Umno has made it impossible for "a government system that is legitimate and representative of the various segments that exist in society" with it decades-long gerrymandering, constitutionally-created Malays, it's unjust detention laws aimed at political opponents, its propaganda organs masquerading as 'free media' and its use of Islam to silence any form of dissent.

Paying lip service to multiculturalism

Enizahura informs readers that in a plural society it is impossible to embrace all "democratic ideals" and I agree with this, but the problem here is that the Umno regime has never even attempted to embrace basic democratic ideals, and of course for a long time this suited the majority of Malaysians who voted them in choosing racial lines instead of ideological ones. I have no idea (although I suspect this has more to do with Malay ethnocentrism and cultural distortion) why Enizahura does not mention the peninsular Orang Asli in her "mélange of various races" that make up Malaysia but right off the bat, she gets it wrong by attempting to suggest that post-70s initiatives to foster racial unity, like the Rukunegara for instance, are examples where the 'government' has chosen to face the racial problems of this country head on.

Of course, what she forgets to mention is that many of those attempts to foster 'unity' is a direct reaction to May 1969 and the mendacious manner in which the government (read: Umno) has chosen to address these issue is really an attempt to perpetuate Malay hegemony all the while paying lip service to the spirit of multiculturalism. The writer reminds us that the problem with racial unity lies in the lack of sincerity among parties vying for power (something which I agree with) but she fails to address the post-69 'unity' efforts by BN which has morphed into systemic state-sanctioned racism.

Is Enizahura forgetting government-initiatives like 'Operasi Isi Penuh' which changed the racial demographic of government departments - be it civil or military - destroying any sense of community between the various ethnic groups serving in government?

azlanOr perhaps more damaging to the indigenous and non-Umno 'Malay' community initiatives such as' Project M' in Sabah (paging Anwar Ibrahim), which has spread and has evolved and continues to play a vital role in Umno survival in the current political climate.

The forgotten race

A good start in ensuring that the historical or traditional communities are represented is by making sure that there are no more stateless Indians, Chinese or Orang Asli.

Enizahura makes a general statement about the dangers of playing the race card but the clear and present danger comes from Umno itself with charlatans, such as the two Alis (Ibrahim and Hasan) and that loathsome Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, acting as Umno proxies using Islam and race as weapons against any form of political and social cohesiveness that Umno claims it wants to perpetuate. Of course, the 'opposition' plays the race card as well and I have written about the shortsightedness of such a game but the reality is that Umno with the complicity of MCA and MIC have done far more damage when playing the race card than any other political party in this country. Enizahura heads into extremely frightening terrain when she muses "to materialise the idea of racial unity, the jigsaw puzzle that appears in our minds is how to turn numerous racial groups into one common entity or identity".

Everyone should have a problem with this. We don't have to look far to see how this kind preoccupation has taken shape in Malaysia with non-Malays/Muslims suddenly finding themselves at the mercy of the syariah courts because of the way that Islam in practiced in this country with regard to conversion.

orang asli protest in putrajaya 170310Forget about the constitutionally-created Malay for a moment and look at plight of the Orang Asli and their 'assimilation' into Malay culture not to mention the 'Malay race'. My advice to non-Malays is that if you are ever feeling really depressed about the state of the country and the 'oppression' you face, read about the system in place governing the Orang Asli to get a little perspective.

The goal of the state in a multiracial country is not to forge one common entity or identity, the state should leave that to its citizens to discover naturally without hampering the process by using religious and racial policies that favours one group over the others.

The goal of the state is to ensure that there is no disparity of treatment among the various ethnic groups in the country. In so doing, the state is laying the groundwork for a common entity or identity.

Sweet gift to world democracy

And if the writer really believes that democracy is more than just the ballot box (again something I agree with) and rather about the expression of diverse views, then she or the organisation she represents should speak out in clear unequivocal terms whenever Islam is used to silence dissent. We need to speak out whenever legitimate forms of expressions are bullied into silence even though we may disagree with those views. We must ensure that the state protects the expression of those diverse views.

In other words, if it is true as de facto law minister Nazri Abdul Aziz claims that the political discourse has "changed" then the state should not sanction those views it deems "sensitive" or "seditious" if it allows the likes of Perkasa and Pekida to run riot. Again it all comes back to the disparity of treatment between the various ethnic groups. The way forward is not to obsess over our differences either by admiring it or fearing it, but rather to ensure that the state treats us regardless of our diversity as equals.

The writer ends with "Hopefully by doing so, we as a united nation, can prove John Stuart Mill wrong. Now, that would certainly be our sweet gift to world democracy". I would argue that the people of Malaysia by voting across racial lines to spite Umno policies proves this well enough, but I doubt this is a "sweet gift" to world democracy but rather a bittersweet contribution in the ongoing war between tyranny and freedom.

* "Free institutions are next to impossible in a country made up of different nationalities. Among a people without fellowship-feeling, especially if they read and speak different languages, the united public opinion necessary to the making of representative government cannot exist." - John Stuart Mill (Considerations on Representative Governments). Sepatutnya Fatwa Itu Berbunyi: "Haram Hukumnya Mencetuskan Huru-Hara Dalam Demo"

Demo cetus huru-hara haram, kata j'kuasa fatwa

Sama seperti demo BERSIH tempohari.

Japan nuclear-power free

Posted: 05 May 2012 05:54 PM PDT

Nuclear power symbolJapan is switching off its last working nuclear reactor – at the Tomari plant, in Hokkaido – as part of the safety drive since the March 2011 tsunami that triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima plant.

Since the Fukushima disaster, all the country's reactors have been shut down, one by one, for "routine maintenance". They must withstand tests against earthquakes and tsunamis, and local authorities must give their consent in order for plants to restart. So far, none have.

That leaves Japan without energy from atomic power for the first time since 1970. Until last year, Japan got 30% of its power from nuclear energy.

Severe power shortages are expected as summer looms. It'll be interesting to see if the Japanese can coup with the problem – with extra import on oil-and-gas, plus rationing etc. The public will stand even firmer against the reopening of the reactors if they manage to live on without nuclear power in coming months.

Posted: 06 May 2012 04:24 AM PDT

- Bernama

Memang bangkai.

Sepatutnya Zulkifli Noordin inilah orang yang ditangkap. Kerana beliau sendiri mengakui:

Saya tahu siapa yang rakamkan video ini,

Malah beliau sendiri mendakwa kononya:

[Fatir: 43]

PRU13 Awal Julai, Sebelum Masuk Bulan Ramadhan?

BN dijangka mengadakan pilihanraya mengejut, berkemungkinan Julai

-TMI

Are You Struggling in Empire & Allies?

Posted: 06 May 2012 12:14 AM PDT

When Zynga announced the launch of Empire & Allies, I did not take it seriously. Since I had seen the huge success of CityVille among Facebook members, with more than 90 million users, I thought that Zynga can never repeat that success story. How much strategy can be brought into the building of an empire? I naturally figured that all the hype about Empire & Allies was just another gimmick.
