Bersih and the quest for human rights

2012-05-02 12:18

By CHANDRA MUZAFFAR

The Bersih Rally of April 28 has brought to the fore two fundamental
human rights: the freedom of assembly and the right to participate in
free and fair elections.

It is a shame that the exercise of the first of these rights on that
day was marred by acts of

Ulangan Peringatan Presiden PAS Kepada Najib: Kesabaran PAS Ada Batasnya!

PAS Boleh Sabar...Tetapi Sabar PAS Ada Sempadan, Ada Batas, Dekat Mana Batas...TUNGGU!!!

Apa Kita Nak Buat...Tunggu Arahan Kita..!

With a new flight simulator being rolled out almost every second month

Posted: 04 May 2012 07:48 AM PDT

With a new flight simulator being rolled out almost every second month, it becomes all the more important to know what kind of simulator suits your needs the best. Personally, I have seen a number of people going out and buying a new flight simulator and spending a fortune on it, only to come to terms with the fact that a cheaper, less sophisticated one could have sufficed their needs. In this

Did I make the right move?

Posted: 04 May 2012 07:03 AM PDT

When at one time I started getting complaints about Azman, Sofie's son at the culinary school, I thought to myself that maybe, just maybe, I made the wrong decision sending him there at such a young age. But then again, had I not sent him there, he would probably end up just working as helper at food stalls. Even when he was in form 3, he missed school quite often, being more interested helping out at food stalls to get some extra pocket money for himself.

When he indicated he wanted to quit school after PMR and work, I could coax him to still go to school at least up to form 5, and only start working after that. But I wouldn't be able to make sure he goes to school every day. Chances are, just like when he was in form 3, out of every 5 schooling days each work, he'd skip school 3 times a week. And him being one of the children under our education sponsorship programme, I didn't want to waste his sponsor's money knowing pretty well he's not putting them to good use.

But I knew from his late mother that he loves cooking. So when a friend of mine told me about a culinary school which does accept 16 year olds on a case to case basis (usually they only take SPM leavers), I personally asked Azman if he'd be interested to take up Kitchen Practice at this place, he was all excited about it. At least with the skill he gets from this course can help him to get better jobs since the certificate given out is recognised by the Ministry of Human Resource.

So yes, early this year, he joined the culinary school. I personally sent him there as his mother was not only unwell, she had 2 younger children which she had to send to and fetch from school. I have a friend in the management team of the culinary school so I depended on her to report to me if there were any problems involving Azman.

After a while, the complaints started coming. He had been almost daily  chit-chatting with his new girlfriend, a senior 3 years older than him, at the hostel pantry, right up to 2 or 3 am in the morning. The warden/lecturers warned him.

Then when I went to visit Sofie at home, she told me how Azman had been asking for money from her every week. For the record, while waiting for his PTPK loan to be approved, he has been getting monthly pocket money from a donor, banked in straight into his bank account. The amount should be good enough, more than what his mother could afford to give him. So when his mother told me that Azman had been asking her for money too often, I was quite angry with him. He had promised me he wouldn't trouble his mother, but there he was, even suggesting to his mother to take out money from his younger siblings' bank accounts!

I gave him a short lecture. Azman seemed to have befriended those from rich families, and so he had been spending just like them. He needed to be reminded how hard his mother had to work despite  her ailing condition just to feed him and his siblings.

The next time I went to visit Sofie, I was told that Azman was no longer asking for money from his mother.

Then when Sofie died, instead of staying with his aunt Rozi, who had been entrusted by Sofie to take care of her children, Azman seemed to prefer going to another aunt's house… the same aunt who had been badmouthing Sofie earlier. At that house he could do whatever he wanted to do without anyone scolding or nagging, unlike his aunt Rozi who'd scold him just like she would her own children if they did anything wrong.

I had to give Azman another short lecture. He should at least have some respect for his aunt Rozi who I could see, cared about the children.

Anyway, yesterday Azman called me up to inform me that he needed to pay a certain amount for the stamping of his study loan agreement. So this morning I went over to the culinary school and went straight to the office, first to pay whatever necessary, and then I had a short chat with one of his lecturers. It was good to know that this lecturer does keep a close watch on her students, even outside the class. And I felt even more relieved when told that Azman had indeed been showing interest in class.

So hopefully I did make the right move by sending him to the culinary school at such a young age…

Turning Point

Posted: 04 May 2012 07:14 AM PDT

I had my reservations earlier about the success of Bersih 3.0. During and immediately after the event, my thoughts were, who the f broke through the barrier? Why did they mar an otherwise peaceful assembly of enormous success?

Then video evidence and explanations start to emerge. Anwar and Azmin Ali actually seen to pacify the crowd, stir them away from Dataran, buying time with police for the crowd to disperse. At the same time, we become aware of knee jerk, disproportionate reaction by the police force - when a breach occurs at one of the cordons, why was the first reaction an all out war with protestors instead of surgically arresting those who breach the barrier? Why were the LRT locked down to prevent protestors from escaping? Who leaked the false news that one of the police officers have been killed? Why was the capsized police car speeding along a road crowded with people? Why was razor wire not found at the cordon where the breach occurred?

A picture slowly emerges of a conspiracy from BN to prevent a peaceful and highly successful assembly from dispersing peacefully, which would have showcased the maturity of Malaysians to handle public assemblies, forcing the federal government to fully amend the Peaceful Assemblies Act to remove its draconian, stifling provisions. A peaceful assembly would not have diverted the attention of the public from the very core issues of electoral roll contamination, and the apparent bias of the top echelons of the Election Commission.

But if Najib kept his zip shut and said no more, perhaps the issue would have been fudged for the coming weaks as the federal government displays a half-hearted attempt at getting to the truth of police brutality. I say half-hearted because there is a ready institution that deals with this issue called our toothless Human Rights Commission. Police brutality is a human rights issue. Who else better equipped to handle this? Now, they want to set up some independent panel. Half-hearted because while not a single police has been charged, a questionable charge has been placed on a PKR member for allegedly breaching the cordon. The saving grace is Suhakam will still investigate, and it would be interesting if the independent panel and Suhakam come up with different conclusion. We know which one is more credible, toothless as they maybe.

But back to the point of Najib keeping quiet. He may be ill-advised, or he may be confident in making this grand move of declaring today that Bersih 3.0 was out to topple the government. Now, I was there, and if I had thought it was a rally to topple the government, I might not have been there. Or if I still wanted to go, I would have joined the rally with the expressed intention of seeking the resignation of the entire Cabinet. But no, it wasn't the case. I was there because from the evidence I see, I deduce that our electoral roll is tainted, and our EC is apparently biased. And all I want is a level playing field.

If by having a level playing field, Najib imputes that the BN government will be "overthrown", then firstly, it's really a very naughty use of words, because of BN loses fair and square (and I'm not saying they will for sure), then they are just defeated in an election, as opposed to being overthrown. Clearly, there is a sea of difference between the two. Secondly, as far as Malaysians are concerned, so what if BN is defeated? A win is not forever, neither is a loss. Pakatan rules for the next 5 years. If they screw up, they get thrown out as well, and that's because within 5 years, we have a reformed BN which is more credible than Pakatan.

By calling Bersih 3.0 protestors rioters and traitors, when we're just carrying out our patriotic, constitutional function, Najib has decisively alienated the attendees, their immediate family members, relatives, friends, and colleagues. By calling Bersih 3.0 a revolt, he has once again shown the schizophrenic nature of his administration. He's now totally contradicted his cousin who said Bersih 3.0 has no traction and does not pose any security risk; and is back to before Bersih 2.0 when Bersih was a security threat and yellow was banned, and Malaysia is a laughing stock of the world.

Thank you Najib. You really helped crystalise what Malaysians have in recent days been struggling with. You snapped us back to focus on the real issues are, that BN is about spin, lies, deceit, and underhanded tactics which knows no scruples, have no boundaries, and is purely acting instinctively in self preservation, like a hurt animal. If BN now wins the elections, there is only one indisputable conclusion that the elections is rigged. You will then face the real Malaysian Spring. The choice for you, therefore, is clear. Face off Pakatan in a fair confrontation by first cleaning up the rolls and reappointing the commission with the hope that you may still emerge victorious, or face a far bleaker prospect of being ousted from office by massive civil disobedience and disruption, Gandhi style.

BERSIH: Tiada Sebab Untuk Serah Diri

Posted: 04 May 2012 07:31 AM PDT

"Kenapa perlu menyerah diri?

'Lagi mudah keluarkan gambar polis'

-MK

Ulasan GB

petikan kenyataan Ketua Polis Kuala Lumpur:

Adilkah begitu?

[WASPADA] Pembantu Kedai Terima Wang Kertas Palsu RM10

Posted: 04 May 2012 06:05 AM PDT

-SH

Guido, the Italian Lover

Posted: 04 May 2012 03:02 AM PDT

A virile, middle-aged Italian gentleman named Guido was relaxing at his favorite bar in Rome when he managed to attract a spectacular young blonde woman.

Things progressed to the point where he invited her back to his apartment and, after some small talk, they retired to his bedroom where he rattled her senseless.

After a pleasant interlude he asked with a smile, "So, you finish?"

She paused for a second, frowned, and replied, "No."

Surprised, Guido reached for her and the rattling resumed. This time she thrashed about wildly and there were screams of passion..

The s** finally ends and, again, Guido smiles and asks, "You finish?"

Again, after a short pause, she returns his smile, cuddles closer to him and softly says, "No."

Stunned, but damned if he was going to leave this woman unsatisfied, Guido reaches for the woman yet again. Using the last of his strength, he barely manages it, but they end together screaming, bucking, clawing and ripping the bed sheets.

Exhausted, Guido falls onto his back, gasping. Barely able to turn his head, he looks into her eyes, smiles proudly and asked again, "You finish?"

Barely able to speak, the beautiful blonde whispers in his ear, "No, I'm Norwegian."

Lagi Ramai Menteri Akan Kecundang Dalam PRU13 Seperti PRU12?

Posted: 04 May 2012 04:55 AM PDT

PM Terbangun Dari Tidur Setelah Bermimpi Gelombang Kuning Mencerut Lehernya

Seperti terjaga dari buaian mimpi gelombang kuning, lalu terjaga dari tidurnya yang panjang tiba-tiba Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi hari ini menempelak BERSIH kerana masih terus ingin mengadakan perhimpunan aman 10 November. Tiba-tiba Pak Lah dengan mata terbeliaknya menjerit .... "saya pantang dicabar"...

Mengapa sekang baru kata "pantang dicabar"?

Gelombang Kuning - Terciptanya Satu Sejarah

Gelombang Kuning - itulah namanya.

Suaram the Big Liar!

Posted: 04 May 2012 01:45 AM PDT

Suaram. I refer to it as Suharam. From an organisation well-organised and well-balanced, it has of late being turned a stallion by the opposition, spreading lies and bad disposition about the country and the government.

Does not matter if you don't like Najib and a few others. I got my own reservation too but I do not simply undermine my own country notwithstanding how bad the politics are.

Suaram has joined the likes of Aliran, FMT, Mkini and even the Bar
Council in bashing up the country's good name and reputation. Battering Najib and the BN Cabinet has become their main selling point.

Latest, Suaram's reports to Free Malaysia Today, Mkini and other mediums on the submarine deals.

Suaram, just like the Bar Council accusing the police of being the party that started the provocation during Bersih rally on April 28 - when investigation was still ongoing - has blatantly accused the govt of corruption in the Scorpene deal.

I am not sure who are the French prosecutors Aliran claimed of feeding them with the fabricated info. Since no name was mentioned, I think Suaram made up the story. And as general election is now a mind game between BN and Pakatan Rakyat, Suaram took the opportunity to discredit Najib over the old issue.

However, I personally would like to know who the Frenchmen are. If they do know about the whole deal, they wouldn't had lied. But if they really had lied, why? Could it be that they are the ones who didn't get any kickbacks from their own countrymen from that deal?

Don't they know that the submarines deal was €1.084 billion at that particular time? The year was 2002, ten years ago. To be precise, it was RM3.4 billion at that time. What was the exchange rate back then?

Suaram has all this while claimed of having this and that documents to substantiate its allegation but it displayed nothing thus far. What documents? Who gave it to you? Or did you compose or prepare it all by yourself.

As far as the deal is concerned, the govt has come up wit many explanations. Official documents were also produced at the opposition's request. wasn't that enough? Whose interest is Suaram trying to protectmand fight for now?

Just a loose question - who is financing Suaram now?

I think Suaram is not only dancing to the opposition's beat but also singing to 'songs from outside'. The manner and timing of its 'statement of protest' to FMT and Mkini can be put to question.

Suaram has got not enough financing. To move on as a credible opposition propaganda machinery, it has to proof something to its potential funders; and most of these fund providers are foreign-based.

So, Suaram has got to stand at par with Mkini, the Bar Council and other big voices of the opposition. Knowing how much foreign agents who are in support of Anwar Ibrahim like such lies as a selling point to the foreign media, Suaram manipulated the issue.

That is how it came up with the RM7.3 billion figure, and that Najib sought US1 billion for a meeting with DCNI, for Perimekar Sdn Bhd's stay in France. The money was NOT a kickback for anybody.

Die Geschichte von Geldbeutel und Geldbörse

Posted: 04 May 2012 01:18 AM PDT

PAS Persoal Keperluan Panel Bebas: Kerajaan Cuba Ketepikan Suhakam?

Posted: 04 May 2012 01:09 AM PDT

-HD

'Najib takut guna Suhakam siasat kekejaman polis'

NST: New 'Sickening' Times STINKS to high heaven

Posted: 03 May 2012 11:07 PM PDT

By Clara Chooi
May 04, 2012
KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — Australian Senator Nicholas Xenophon has confirmed he will sue the New Straits Times (NST), accusing the Umno-controlled Malaysian daily of jeopardising his safety by publishing an article portraying him as anti-Islam.
The independent lawmaker said he was aware of the newspaper's decision to retract its report but said he would still seek legal redress in either or both Australia and Malaysia.
"I will be conferring with both Malaysian and Australian lawyers on this.
"This is a very serious defamation and it is distressing.
"My views on Islam were completely fabrication... I am sickened," he said in a phone call to The Malaysian Insider yesterday.
The NST had yesterday admitted to having falsely quoted Xenophon (picture) in its article on Wednesday as calling Islam a "criminal organisation" during his 2009 speech in Australia's Parliament.
But according to Hansard, the senator, a known associate of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, had instead used the label to criticise "Scientology".
"Of course this has become a danger to me. I have been accused of something incredibly serious... of disparaging Islam in the most disgusting way.
"I have already been advised that my safety is now in danger," he said.
Xenophon pointed out that although NST had pulled its article from its website, it had already likely been read by thousands of netizens.
He stressed that he was in no way against Islam and instead has great respect for the religion.
"How could they do this?" he asked. "I have tremendous respect for the people of Malaysia... Malaysians are my friends."
He added that he had been in Malaysia as a part of the opposition-commissioned international team of observers during the Bersih 3.0 weekend, not merely on invitation but due to his "passion" for the country and its people.
"So this is something I must do, something I need. I need a court ruling on what had occurred," he said, referring to his decision to proceed with the legal suit.
When asked, however, if he would seek out the Malaysian government to mete punitive action against the NST, Xenophon said he would first consult his lawyers.
But he said the fact that the prominent English daily is Umno-owned "adds seriousness to the case".
"I cannot fathom how they would stoop this low," he said.
In its response to the incident yesterday, the NST had also pledged to publish an "appropriate statement" on the issue both in its print and online versions, adding its regret to any distress the incident may have caused the independent Australian senator.
The NST's response, in verbatim, is as follows:
"We refer to the news regarding Mr Nicholas Xenophon's complaint in respect of the article entitled 'Observer Under Scrutiny' with a sub-title 'Impartiality Questioned: Anti-Islam Australian Lawmaker Comes Under Fire', which appeared in the May 2, 2012 edition of the New Straits Times published by us.
"We regret that the article attributes certain statements to Xenophon, particularly the use of the word 'Islam' which he did not make in a parliamentary speech in November 2009. We are taking steps to make amends including publishing an appropriate statement in our newspaper and its online version to address the issue.
"We truly and sincerely regret that Xenophon has suffered any distress and embarrassment arising from the article and we honestly believe that that steps we are taking to make amends will resolve the matter."
According to the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) yesterday, Xenophon had said that NST's alleged use of the word "Islam" to replace the actual term "Scientology", which he had criticised in his 2009 speech, was "an example of the kind of dirty tricks the ruling party employs and had used against the Opposition Leader Anwar".
The NST has since removed the article from its website, but cached copies can still be found of the offending story.
In the NST article, Xenophon was not only accused of insulting Islam during his 2009 adjournment speech in Australia's Parliament, but was also said to have expressed strong support for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.
The NST's extract of the speech quoted the senator as saying: "What we are seeing is a worldwide pattern of abuse and criminality. On the body of evidence, this is not happening by accident; it is happening by design. Islam is not a religious organisation. It is a criminal organisation that hides behind its so-called religious beliefs."
But in the excerpt from the Australian Parliament's Hansard, cited in the SMH, Xenophon had actually said: "What we are seeing is a worldwide pattern of abuse and criminality. On the body of evidence, this is not happening by accident; it is happening by design. Scientology is not a religious organisation. It is a criminal organisation that hides behind its so-called religious beliefs."
A cached version of the article can be accessed here.
According to the NST, Xenophon had also appeared to express support for same-sex marriages in the same adjournment speech, purportedly claiming that other lawmakers agreed with him and such unions would eventually be allowed by law.
The paper quoted PKR-turned-independent MP Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim as criticising Xenophon for his words, saying that the latter was not only outspoken against Islam but also supportive of the LGBTs.
"Should we let someone like Xenophon influence our culture and moral values through politics? By confiding in Xenophon, is Anwar also supporting the LGBT movement?" he asked, according to the NST.
SMH, however, did not dispute the NST's report over Xenophon's alleged support for homosexuality.
Xenophon was among a team of international observers or "pre-election assessment team" invited to Kuala Lumpur by Anwar to look into the country's electoral reform attempts.
The team was on a six-day mission from April 25 and was tasked to interview local government and political leaders, before compiling its recommendations on how Malaysia could have a clean and fair polls process, which the country's opposition leaders have insisted does not exist here.
They had also observed last Saturday's rally for free and fair elections by Bersih and in an immediate response to the event, Xenophon had insisted that the rally-goers were well-behaved and even festive, instead of unruly as claimed by government leaders.
As a result, Xenophon has come under fire for his allegedly blinkered support for Anwar, with questions raised over his independence and impartiality.

Rakan sekerja dicekup khalwat

Pegawai Masjid Al-Azim, Ahmad Nawi Othman berkata, pihaknya menerima aduan mengenai lelaki dan wanita berkenaan tinggal serumah sehingga menimbulkan keraguan penduduk.

-SH
