It's about the remarks by Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee on June 7 who pointed out to the recent amendment to the Kedah Mufti and Fatwa Enactment (2008). I am only of the opinion that religious matter like this should be left to the Sultan or the Islamic Council for deliberations.
Well, I have my own standpoint - religious matter should be kept out of politics!
The article reads:
"In referring to the remarks by Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee on last Thursday (7 June) that pointed out the recent amendment to the Kedah Mufti and Fatwa Enactment (2008) on 17 April barring all fatwas or edicts from being challenged in courts is unconstitutional, Kedah Gerakan Chairman cum Derga State Assemblyman Dr. Cheah Soon Hai welcomes his critical comment on the issue and is very much agree with the viewpoint of the Malaysian Bar chief.
"Dr. Cheah shares profoundly the same disquiet and concern of the Bar Council on the issue. He strongly feels that the amendment has made the fatwas in Kedah absolute, immune to challenge in any civil or Syariah court, which is essentially unconstitutional.
"The BN ADUNs have vehemently opposed the amendment when it was tabled during the last state assembly in April, but DAP and PKR have kept quiet and let the PAS ADUNs to bulldoze the amendment.
"This issue should be taken seriously by the people especially the Kedahans as it is a serious offense to the human rights that goes against the spirit of the law and an overt violation to the doctrine of separation of powers that is essential for the democratic system in the country with fundamental check and balance on the three branches of government – the legislative, judiciary and executive.
"For this reason, we are certainly cannot afford to underestimate or overlook the issue for being apathetic and impassive," stressed Dr. Cheah.

Just look at the people present at the Insadunia food court in Bukit Mertajam. They weren't there only for the food but also to attend the launch of the Penang Free WiFi by the Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng. Judging from the tone of his speech, I would think that the various Penang Free WiFi launches around Penang are speculation enough that the general elections must be round the corner....

The United Nations refugee agency called for Bangladesh to welcome Muslim Rohingyas fleeing violence in neighboring Myanmar after reports that border guards had denied them entry.
"UNHCR is advocating with the Bangladeshi authorities to allow safe haven on its territory for those who need immediate safety and medical assistance," the agency said in an e-mailed statement today. Myanmar declared a state of emergency two days ago in western Rakhine state, bordering Bangladesh, in a bid to end rioting and arson attacks.
Myanmar's President Thein Sein warned in a national address that uncontrolled violence may hamper the goverment's ability to proceed with democratic reforms that prompted the U.S. and European Union to suspend sanctions this year.
Moves toward greater political freedom after about five decades of military rule have attracted investors to Myanmar, one of Asia's poorest nations. The outbreak of violence in Rakhine underscores the challenge of unifying a country of 64 million people with 135 officially recognized ethnic groups, a list that excludes the Rohingyas.
The unrest began after an alleged rape prompted a mob of about 300 Rakhine Buddhists to murder 10 Muslims on June 3, according to New York-based Human Rights Watch. Myanmar imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in four towns in Rakhine and prohibited more than five people from gathering in public areas, according to the New Light of Myanmar.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for an immediate halt to the clashes, while reiterating support for the country's shift to democracy.
The U.S. is "deeply concerned" and "urges all parties to exercise restraint and immediately halt all attacks," Clinton said in a statement yesterday. "The situation in Rakhine state underscores the critical need for mutual respect among all ethnic and religious groups and for serious efforts to achieve national reconciliation," she said.
The government's moves to quell the violence between Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingyas and bring aggressors to justice have been inadequate, Human Rights Watch said.
"Deadly violence in Arakan State is spiraling out of control under the government's watch," Elaine Pearson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement, using another name for Rakhine state. "Opening the area to independent international observers would put all sides on notice that they were being closely watched."
Bangladesh border guards and the nation's coastguard yesterday prevented 500 Rohingya Muslims from entering the country in 11 boats, Major Shafiqur Rahman said. Most were women and children who traveled for as long as nine hours and lacked food and water, he said by phone yesterday.
"We didn't see any refugees in the morning," he said in a separate conversation today. "Probably, they got the message that we are not allowing them in. Still, we are on alert."
Bangladesh and Myanmar "enjoy the best of relations" and"are maintaining close consultations to ensure that developments in the Rakhine state do not have any transboundary spillover," Bangladesh foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Monirul Islam Kabir said in a statement today.
China supports Myanmar's efforts to safeguard stability in Rakhine state, Xinhua reported today, citing Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin. U.K. Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne on June 10 called for restraint and urged British citizens to avoid all but essential travel to Rakhine state, according to a statement on the ministry's website.
Rohingyas, Sunni Muslims who are descended from Arab traders, are prevented from obtaining citizenship and traveling freely throughout the country, according to Human Rights Watch. About 800,000 Rohingyas live in Myanmar and 200,000 are in Bangladesh, the group estimates.
In the early 1990s, Bangladesh forcibly repatriated about 50,000 Rohingyas to Myanmar, also known as Burma, before the two countries allowed the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to observe the process, according to Human Rights Watch. From 2006 to 2010, 920 have been resettled to third countries, mostly to Canada, Australia and the U.K., according to the UNHCR.

COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) – Hundreds of Rohingya Muslims have tried to flee sectarian violence in Myanmar by boat into Bangladesh but have been pushed back by authorities, border officials said on Tuesday, deepening a crisis threatening Myanmar's nascent democracy.
The United States and European Union urged calm to prevent a derailing of Myanmar's fragile reforms after four days of unrest between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine state, where a state of emergency has been declared to quell a spree of arson and machete attacks in which least eight people have been killed.
Bangladeshi paramilitaries, police and coastguard pushed back 12 wooden boats on Monday carrying 300 Rohingyas, mostly women and children, and witnesses said three more with some 150 people on board were drifting in waters close to the border.
Witnesses said they saw just 20 Rohingyas who had made it into Bangladesh, about half of whom were injured, but their whereabouts were not known. A Bangladeshi official on St Martin's island said the remaining boats had tried to reach the shore but were turned back.
"The boats moved around for a couple of days trying to land on this island but eventually were driven out of our water this morning," Mohammed Nurul Amin, head of a district council, told Reuters by telephone.
"Islanders are also keeping an eye out for any further crossing attempts," he said.
Buddhist-majority Myanmar's government regards the estimated 800,000 Muslim Rohingyas in the country as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship. Bangladesh has refused to grant Rohingyas refugee status since 1992.
Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry said it supported Myanmar's efforts to restore order and said it was acting in the best interests of both countries by ensuring developments in Myanmar "do not have any trans-boundary spill-over". The countries are separated by a river flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
The stateless Rohingyas live in abject conditions and are deeply resented in Rakhine state. Rohingya activists have demanded recognition as a Myanmar ethnic group, claiming a centuries-old lineage to Rakhine.
Rioting broke out in Rohingya-dominated districts in western Myanmar on Friday but spread to the biggest city, Sittwe, where security forces have battled to restore order, shooting into the air to drive away mobs armed with wooden staves, knives and slingshots as flames engulfed homes and other buildings.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday echoed Myanmar President Thein Sein's warning that the unrest threatened to endanger democratic and economic reforms in the former Burma if it spiralled out of control.
"The situation in Rakhine state underscores the critical need for mutual respect among all ethnic and religious groups and for serious efforts to achieve national reconciliation," Clinton said in a statement.
"OUT OF CONTROL"
Thein Sein has said national reconciliation was a top priority for ethnically diverse Myanmar. The unrest is the biggest challenge to face his reformist government since it replaced a military junta in March last year.
U.S.-based Human Rights Watch called for diplomats and foreign journalists to be given access to the area and criticised Thein Sein for handing power to security forces. It said troops had opened fire on Rohingyas in Rakhine State, also known by its former name Arakan.
"Deadly violence in Arakan State is spiralling out of control under the government's watch," the group's deputy Asia director, Elaine Pearson, said in a statement.
What sparked the rioting is not known, but it came as tension between Buddhists and Muslims simmered in the wake of reports of a gang rape and murder of a Buddhist woman, widely blamed on Muslims.
That led to the killing of 10 Muslims on June 3, when a Buddhist mob stopped a bus they were travelling on. The dead bus passengers had no connection to the murdered woman; state media says three Muslims are on trial for the woman's death.
Medical aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres suspended its operations in the area on Tuesday, a day after the U.N. refugee agency finished pulling out its staff. More than 4,000 people driven from their homes are in six shelters, Myanmar state media said.
Curfews are in place in three Myanmar towns, including Thandwe, the gateway to tourist beaches, and Kyaukphyu, where China is building a port complex.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin urged Chinese citizens and companies to boost safety precautions and said China "supports Myanmar's efforts in maintaining stability and ethnic harmony".
The curfews underline the risk to Myanmar's attempts to coax tourists and investors into the country after the recent suspension of European and United States sanctions.
Security was also stepped up along Bangladesh's 172 km (107-mile) border with Myanmar to stem the flow of refugees.
"Local people are trying to supply food and drinking water to them but coastguard and police have foiled them," Abdur Rahim Jehadi, a reporter on St. Martin's island, told Reuters.

Sekarang Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, apa lagi... tunggu depan MINDEF nanti.

Bapa Chong Wei nafi mahu bunuh diri
-SH

This Friday, the NGOs will hold a two-km peaceful march from the Tabung Haji mosque to hand over a memorandum to the Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
GEORGE TOWN: A coalition of Malaysian NGOs has called on the Myanmar government to immediately stop the violence and arson attacks against the Rohingya Muslims in the western Rakhine state.
The coalition also wants President Thein Sein's government to bring the criminals behind the violence to justice and compensate the Rohingya victims.
Currently Rohingyas are under arson attack and violence by Rakhinese ethnic group following an alleged rape – murder of a Rakhinese girl by three Rohingyas last month.
The arson attacks and violence against the community is said to have spread in many parts of Rakhine state.
The NGO coalition comprises Citizens International, UJN, ABIM, MAPIM, SHURA, KUMS-Malaysia, TERAS, PUM, WADAH, SALIMAH, GAMIS, PKPIM, PUK, MSA-Stevens and UNIROD.
In a joint statement, the coalition chairman SM Mohamed Idris condemned the killings and failure of authorities to protect the Rohingya civilian population.
The coalition would now lobby internationally to stop the violence, including submitting memorandums to United Nations and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
This Friday, the coalition will hold a two-km peaceful march from the Tabung Haji mosque to hand over a memorandum to the Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
Both the US and EU recently eased sanctions on Burma amid a process of reform that began with the election of a military-backed nominally civilian government in November 2010 that ended decades of military rule.
Illegal immigrants from Bangladesh
Activists, however, have criticised Yangon for allowing troops to take control of the western province and have asked that journalists, aid workers and diplomats be allowed into the area.
"The violence is spiralling out of control under the government's watch," said Elaine Pearson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch in a statement.
President Thein Sein declared a state of emergency late Sunday night after unrest over the weekend saw rival Buddhist and Muslim groups setting houses on fire.
Idris also called Yangon administration to recognise the Rohingyas as citizens with equal rights as other ethnic groups in Myanmar.
Rohingyas are a stateless Muslim group in Myanmar as Yangon considers them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Idris said the Rohingya community has faced discrimination and persecution from the Myanmar military regime for over 60 years.
He said it was wrong for Yangon to classify Rohingyas as illegal immigrants when the community had always been a permanent ethnic community in Myanmar.
Idris called on Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy to convene a dialogue with the Rohingya community to address their grievances.

To me, San Francisco is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in this world. Even though I have visited San Francisco twice, I never had the chance to visit Alcatraz.
According to Wikipedia:
Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States. Often referred to as "The Rock", the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963.
Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of American Indians from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Indian activism across the nation with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972 Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
Today, the island's facilities are operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; it is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. In 2008 the nation's first hybrid propulsion ferry started serving the island. (MORE HERE)
According to a very interesting article about Alcatraz written by Alastair Leithead in BBC NEWS:
Those who ran Alcatraz liked to say nobody ever escaped alive.
But that hasn't stopped US marshals from continuing the search for three men who made it off the island 50 years ago. According to the official version, Frank Morris, and the brothers John and Clarence Anglin were presumed drowned in the cold and choppy waters of San Francisco Bay.
There are plenty of people who think they did make it ashore and have been in hiding ever since.
Rumour had it they would return to the prison turned tourist spot on the 50th anniversary of their escape. Although it's not certain where the urban myth began, US Marshal Michael Dyke spent the day on the island anyway, just in case.
Most prisoners who tried to flee "The Rock", as it became known, were captured or killed or drowned.
But this was one of the most daring and intricate escapes in the notorious prison's history - involving spoons, papier-mache heads and rubber raincoats.
It began by digging away at the concrete around the air vents in their cells with spoons and a drill-like device fashioned from a vacuum cleaner.
A seagull flies over Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island 2 July 2003 Alcatraz was closed in 1963, a year after the escape
Accordion practice muffled the sound of the drilling, and cardboard was carefully used to cover each hole as it grew. Soap became a substitute for removed rivets.
When the time came, they squeezed through into a utility corridor and headed for the roof.
Guards doing their rounds periodically checked on the faces of their prisoners. The three escapees appeared to be sleeping soundly, the guards were unaware they were papier-mache heads with real hair, harvested from the prison barber shop.
The three made it up to the roof, and despite the searchlights, headed over high barbed-wire fences.
At a watchtower blind spot they used improvised bellows to inflate a raft fashioned from rubber raincoats.
A fourth member of the gang had been unable to remove his air vent quickly enough, and by the time he broke through, the others had already cast off into San Francisco Bay - to their deaths or to freedom - depending on what you believe.

Day Seven of our stay in New Zealand's South Island was the final day of our vacation. After having driven from Christchurch to Queenstown via Twizel and Wanaka, and then to Dunedin and Oamaru, we were back in Christchurch.
We had travelled and taken in the sights of the snow-covered mountains as well as the sea (although we never got the chance to touch neither snow nor sea water.) Now what was left for us was to explore the biggest city in the South Island, a city that had been ravaged by earthquake, and we had a full day to do so. For that, I have to thank an old friend and chess kaki, Alan Phang, who had settled down in New Zealand some 14 years earlier.
But first, having arrived from Oamaru at dusk the day before, we checked in at the Christchurch Motel in Riccarton. This would be our final accommodation. Quite comfortable accommodation, although the room was rather small. We could park the car directly outside the room. We tidied up and then decided to go walk along the main road in front of the hotel. The hotel manager had told us that there were some eateries down the road, perhaps some 20 minutes away.
We walked, crossing one road junction after another but we never looked like coming across a restaurant interesting enough for us. Finally, we went into a dairy shop. Seeing that the proprietress was Indian, we asked her for the nearest Indian food. "It's that way," she pointed in the direction that we had come from. "Go down the road and turn right into Ilam Road. You'll find the restaurant on the left. You can walk but it's going to take you at least a good half an hour to get there." She glanced up at the clock and added, "I wouldn't recommend it."
So we turned back, collected the car and headed off in the direction that she had given us. Sure enough, we soon pulled up at the Tandoori Palace. I was quite surprised that the restaurant was quite packed. We did not want to wait and so we went to their take-away section. It was also filled with people.
Their food must indeed be good. One way or another, we would have to wait. But this time, we just didn't feel like searching for more places to eat and we decided to just order some naan bread and curry from their take-away menu. I took a glance at the menu and straight away, added their palak paneer, spinach with generous chunks of cottage cheese, to our order. I just want to say here that I did not regret ordering it. It was a great dish and I'm saying it not because I was famished!
Here are two pictures of the Christchurch Motel in the morning before we checked out. We were due to meet up with Alan at the Riccarton Bush but before then, I had a surprise for my wife: an unannounced visit to an unexpected place, but more about that later.

My blogging activities have really and I mean really, really slowed down quite a bit these days. Finding the time to sit and blog is a luxury. There was a time not too long ago that I could sit and blog about anything at all. In fact, I wouldn't run out of topics to write but these days my mind is so consumed with a host of things that thinking of writing something intelligent is like trying to squeeze water from a rock, in fact that might be easier to do :D Though I may not have the time to update my blog much I still do keep track of all my old time blogging buddies and their updates even though I don't comment much these days. I can't imagine where I found the time to blog as much as I did back then. I could write a post and extremely long ones at that every single day. I guess back then I didn't run my own company and could afford to sit and blog during office hours. I don't have the liberty to do that much these days. The moment I'm in the office, it's one rush job after the other which is good in a way cos that more money but I'm just so tired by the end of the work day that I just want to collapse. Then there is my running to indulge in after work that by the time all that is over, the day is almost ending leaving me no time to even look into articles about slides at PlaytimeUS.com. Sometimes I really do wish there was more than 24 hours in a day. Even the days move pretty fast, one minute it's Monday, the next it's the weekend and half the time I don't even know what I did all week! I suppose it's better than having a day so boring it takes forever to end, right? Anyways, that's about all the intelligence I have for today, if I keep on writing, it'll just turn into gibberish. And by the way, I purposely ignored having paragraphs in this post to make your life a little more difficult trying to read this post ... LOL!

The former nephew of the president of Kazakhstan had 'great success' after he falsely claimed a place at Columbia University and allegedly scammed his stepfather, the president's brother, out of a 'very nice' $20 million New York City apartment, according to a lawsuit. Daniyar Nazarbayev's American adventure is a tale that puts to shame even the mighty Borat, the fictional Kazakh TV producer who lampooned the former Soviet republic on screen in 2006.
Con man? Daniyar Nazarbayev allegedly used his ill-gotten admission to Columbia University to woo Nooryana Najwa, the daughter of Malaysia's Prime Minister
Mr Nazarbaye, 24, who fled from the US, is now reportedly engaged to marry the daughter of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, whom he met at the Ivy League university. Daniyar Nazarbayev and Nooryana Najwa

Kazakhstan president's nephew cheated his way into Columbia University: lawsuit
The grifter who swindled his gloriously connected Kazakh stepfather out of a $20 million Plaza condo also conned his way into Columbia University, court papers charge. Daniyar Nazarbayev — whose stepdad is the brother of Kazak President Nursultan Nazarbayev — landed at the college using "fraudulent and fabricated" paperwork from a high school he didn't actually attend, the court papers say. When applying, Daniyar allegedly claimed he had graduated from a high school in Kazakhstan. He actually went to high school in Switzerland — and never graduated, sources said. Even Daniyar's influential last name isn't real, the court papers say. His actual surname is Kesikbayev. His mother, Maira, allegedly had his birth certificate changed after she married Bolat Nazarbayev in 2001. Read in full from the New York Post........

A Nun asked her Sunday School class to write a note to God........
Dear GOD: Instead of letting people die and having to make new ones, why don't you just keep the ones You have? ~~Johnny
Dear GOD: I bet it is very hard for You to love all of everybody in the whole world. There are only 4 people in our family and I can never do it. ~~Nan
Dear GOD: I read the Bible. What does "beget" mean? Nobody will tell me. ~~Love, Alison
Dear GOD: Did You mean for the giraffe to look like that or was it an accident? ~~Norma
Dear GOD: I went to this wedding and they kissed right in church. Is that okay? ~~Neil
Dear GOD: Thank you for the baby brother, but what I prayed for was a puppy. ~~Joyce
Dear GOD: Please send me a pony. I never asked for anything before You can look it up. ~~Bruce
Dear GOD: If we come back as something - Please don't let me be Jennifer Horton because I hate her. ~~Denise
Dear GOD: My brother told me about being born but it doesn't sound right. They're just kidding, aren't they? ~~Marsha
Dear GOD: We read Thomas Edison made light. But in Sunday school they said you did it. So I bet he stole your idea. ~~Sincerely, Donna
Dear GOD: I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tuesday. That was cool. ~~Sara

Bakal menantu PM didakwa tipu AS$20 juta
The New York Post melaporkan jurucakap Columbia sudah dihubungi tetapi enggan mengulasnya. -mk
