The moon, Venus and Jupiter

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 03:31 AM PDT

I wonder how many people noticed it this morning but there was an interesting display of the heavenly bodies in the sky. Actually, I wouldn't have noticed it myself if I had not participated in the FMM Penang heritage trail event. While waiting for the event to start, I happened to glance upwards at the brightening sky.

It was already 6.59a.m. and normally, it would be very difficult already to notice any star or planet in the sky. But not this morning. There, lingering quite near to the waning crescent moon were two bright spots of light in a cloudless sky. The brighter one was Venus while the dimmer one was Jupiter. Together, they were aligned almost in a straight line, truly a remarkable occurrence. A marvellous sight for anyone with a passing interest in astronomy.

Makcik 61 Tahun Tunggang Motorsikal Sejauh 260 km Dari Larut Ke Himpunan Oren

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 06:28 AM PDT

"Makcik dah biasa dah."

-selangorku

Bishop: National Harmony Act could be a misnomer by Terence Netto

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 04:22 AM PDT

Catholic Bishop Dr Paul Tan Chee Ing suggested that it is better for the government to just repeal the Sedition Act than replace it with another law whose provisions may be as selectively enforced as it predecessor's has been. The head of the Catholic Church in the Melaka-Johor diocese was airing his comments to Malaysiakini on the move by Prime Minister Najib Razak to have the Sedition Act replaced by a National Harmony Act.

"My intention is not take political sides but since this new law is about ensuring religious and racial harmony, I feel duty bound to hold forth on the matter," he remarked. "The contemplated new law may turn out to be a misnomer," opined Bishop Paul Tan, who is concurrently president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. "Instead of promoting harmony, it may insure disharmony if its provisions are selectively enforced as has been the case with the Sedition Act," asserted the Jesuit-trained prelate.

The Sedition Act proscribes the questioning of a host of issues ranging from the position of Malay rulers to the status of Islam. In announcing that a new National Harmony Act would be enacted to replace the Sedition Act, Najib has said that the government was seeking to balance the right to free speech with the need to protect institutions and positions considered sacrosanct by the Malaysian body politic.

Signs of growing maturity

"Consider what has happened in recent years," said Bishop Paul Tan. "We have seen a politician or two and some religious leaders raise the bogey of Christian proselytisation of Muslims and proffer no substantive proof in support and yet they have not been hauled up for seditious speech. "But more surprising still - and a wonderfully pleasant one at that - was that the general populace declined to react to the inflammatory posturing of the individuals concerned."

Bishop Paul Tan said this was perhaps a sign of growing maturity and discernment among the people that enables them to distinguish between religious charlatans seeking to stir the pot and democrats questing after an expansion of the parameters of civic debate. "Why then enact a new law when the old one has not been equitably enforced and why promulgate new legislation when the majority has shown a heartening maturity that intuitively accepts what is held to be sacrosanct and knows who is an inciter and who a responsible democrat?" he asked.

"The authorities must know that cynicism follows hard upon the impulse to draw up laws with zeal and enforce them with bias and that best subsoil of a civil polity is the restraint that ordinary people exhibit in the face of willful and undeterred demagogues," said Bishop Paul Tan. "Don't replace obsolete laws with newfangled ones, especially if you cannot be counted on to enforce them with equity," he contended. Malaysiakini

Orwellian road to national harmony by Commander (Rtd) S THAYAPARAN, formerly of the Royal Malaysian Navy

Umno is the bigger brother, but it gives us enough room to voice our thoughts - Hulu Selangor MP P Kamalanathan

COMMENT Some time ago (probably in the 90s) late one night, I was watching Tim Sebastian (BBC HardTalk) going a couple of rounds with some Indian government official about the Indian/Pakistan/ Kashmir quagmire. Something the Indian official said stuck with me. Responding to Sebastian's attempt at pointing out to some compromise coming from Islamabad, the Indian official rather amusingly replied that if someone is pointing a gun at your head and moves it away an inch, it's hardly a compromise.

Reading Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin's attempts at painting the proposed National Harmony Act or any other of the recent amendments or introductions of Acts oozing out of Putrajaya, as so-called "substantial transformative legislation", I can't help but think that anything Umno does as far as Prime Minister Najib Razak's transformative policies are concerned, especially with issues concerning national security, is merely moving the gun an inch. There was a time when Acts such as the Internal Security Act, Sedition Act, etc, made us whisper amongst ourselves ever fearful that our grievances against the ruling regime would results in midnight visit to our homes by the practitioners of the dark arts. Stories were told of how so and so disappeared one night and loved ones were told to remain silent.

These days the stories are told openly and these Acts although still in selective use have lost their hold over a great many of us. Countless lives which have been irrevocably changed merely because citizens chose to speak truth to power. But this is merely one side of the story. When we have an Umno MP who wonders if a civil rights activist should (could?) be hanged for treason, we have crossed the Rubicon in terms of defining what is seditious with regards to the political discourse in this country. It goes without saying that any attempt by Umno to curb 'seditious' speech should be met with scorn.

When asked why no action was taken against the 'seditious' speech by Umno-backed lackeys such as the propaganda arms of the party or the outsourced thugs, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department and de facto law minister Nazri Abdul Aziz rambled on how the political and social landscapes had "changed". It was probably the most honest and hypocritical response coming from the minister, which is sadly not as rare a feat as some would believe in the 'play at your own risk' game of politics.

As I argued in 'Press Gangs of Malaysia', what Malaysia needs is a market place of ideas, something that Najib claims to want (with this new Act) but nothing so far in the sad history of Umno hegemony has demonstrated this.

Selective use of the law

Commenters here and elsewhere have thrown about George Orwell references like it's going out of style indeed, I would like to know which genius in Putrajaya came up with name 'National Harmony Act', which immediately puts a bull's eyes on it begging for Orwell darts. The title of the Act reinforces whatever Orwellian cliché is bandied about and the motif behind its creation reeks of the moral bankruptcy of the ruling coalition.

Anyone with a functioning moral compass would be able to recognise that Acts such as this one, the Peaceful Assembly Act and ISA or whatever incarnation is upon us now, are used by the regime to stifle free speech and crack down on political dissent. Its selective use is evidence of an undeclared war on an ideologically diverse population. However what I would argue is that the selective use of such laws against its own people (refer to our prime minister's so-called Freudian slip with regard to the ISA) has far greater implications in the long run than the mendacious short-term aims of Umno.

What the selective use of Acts such as the ISA (and most probably this new National Harmony Act) have done is poisoned the discourse insofar as how these laws could be of use to the national security of this country. My own favourite Orwell quote, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf", rarely gets an airing. Perhaps because of my past career(s), I have known far too many men (women) who would make suitable guests under whatever "restrictive/unjust" laws that are abhorred by an increasingly frustrated Malaysian public.

I have also known far too many people who have been unjustly subjugated by these laws. Therein lies the rub. A friend who had served loyally in the security apparatus of this country often tells me, that the only time people hear of these "unjust" laws is when the government "misuses them". If people only knew, he said, of the extremely dangerous individuals who meant this country harm, the religious fanatics, the hardcore criminal... Disappointedly, he goes on about how there has never been any real discussion on what we as citizens are prepared to give up in terms of our rights because our rights have been abused from the get go.

Understand now that I'm not making an argument for such laws, but rather pointing to another instance where this regime has made it impossible for Malaysian to have a rational discussion about well, anything.

Slap on the face

The proposed National Harmony Act is a slap on the face for anyone who believes that speech should be regulated (and this is a perfectly legitimate stance, even though I may not subscribe to it) but yet can only stand by impotently as the Awang Selamats and the Ridhuan Tee Abdullahs of Malaysia are allowed to run riot by Umno. All these laws and the way how they are implemented is one big fat joke. Take the ISA for instance. When it's not being used to imprison political dissidents (many of whom now make up our 'opposition politicians'), its uses have been proved a sham by the likes of Yazid Sufaat. Has anyone forgotten how our home minister boasted of how the ISA (presumably) could have rehabilitated Nordin Mat Top?

And yet every country, sooner or later, has to deal with existential threats either from within or without. The problem in Malaysia is that any threat is not viewed as a national threat but as a threat to Umno. Or at least, that's the general perception. This new National Harmony Act is not about "inculcating the spirit of harmony and mutual respect in the Malaysian society made up of various races and religions" but rather about not unbalancing the harmony in Umno. These are chaotic times for Umno. Nobody knows what's going to happen. Umno seems to be in a state of flux with the supreme council involved in protracted power games that are leaving the rank and file milling about like lost sheep. The prime minister says one thing and his minions do another.

I believe most people are mistaken when they think Umno is trying to repackage these old laws as some sort of publicity stunt to garner goodwill. I think there is something more to it. I'm in the camp that believes that Umno has finally decided to "go alone at it" and laws such as these are merely being created to stockpile their armoury. Everyone is waiting with bated breath for Najib to pull the trigger on the election gun. The belief is that the results of the election will be the dawn of a new day. I sincerely wish this is so.

But just the other night before I read about the proposed National Harmony Act, I was rereading Alan Moore's (Dave Lloyd's) 'V for Vendetta', and this jumped up at me: With so much chaos, someone will do something stupid. And when they do, things will turn nasty." Malaysiakini.

Westernization is not inevitable - Today’s Muslim youth are less Westernized than their parents were By Mark Steyn

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 04:23 AM PDT

Media types like to talk about "the narrative": News is just another form of storytelling, and certain plot lines grab you more than others. The easiest narrative of all is anything involving young people. "I believe that children are our future," as the late Whitney Houston once asserted. And, even if Whiney hadn't believed it, it would still as a point of fact be true. Any media narrative involving young people presupposes that they are the forces of progress, wresting the world from the grasping clutches of mean, vengeful old men and making it a better place. In the West, young people actually believe this.

Thus, in 2008, Barack Obama, being the preferred choice of America's youth, was by definition the candidate of progress and the future. In humdrum reality, his idea of the future doesn't seem to be any more futuristic than the pre-Thatcher statist wasteland of Britain in the Seventies, but that didn't stop the massed ranks of fresh-faced youth chanting "We are the Hopeychange!" in adoring if glassy-eyed unison behind him at every campaign rally. Four years later, half of recent graduates can't find full-time employment; Americans' college debt is now larger than credit-card debt; the number of young people with summer jobs is at a record low; and men in their late 20s and early 30s trudge upstairs every night to the same bedroom in which they slept as a kindergartner.

And that's before they're permanently buried by interest payments on the multitrillion-dollar debt and unfunded liabilities from Medicare. Yet in 2012 the rubes will still vote for Obama and be congratulated by the media for doing so. Because to be young is to vote for hope and change. Likewise, halfway across the world, the Arab Spring was also hailed as the voice of youth, tweeting its universal message of hope and change. A year on, it's proved to be rather heavier on change, and ever lighter on hope. Egypt's first freely elected head of state is a Muslim Brotherhood man. In the parliament of the most populous Arab nation, the Muslim Brotherhood's party and its principal rival, the Even More Muslim Brotherhood, between them won nearly three-quarters of the seats.

In traditionally relaxed and secular Tunisia and Morocco, elections have been won by forces we are assured by the experts are "moderate Islamists" — which means that, unlike the lavishly bankrolled American protectorate of Afghanistan, they won't be executing adulterous women in the street, or at any rate not just yet. So what are they doing? In Libya, British Commonwealth war graves have been desecrated, something that never happened under Colonel Qaddafi even at the very lowest of low points in relations between him and the West. But hey, one can forgive Libya's suddenly liberated young men a spasm of very belated anti-imperialism, right?

Meanwhile, in northern Mali, the dominant Ansar Dine group is currently engaged in destroying the ancient shrines of Timbuktu, including the famous door of the 15th-century Sidi Yahya mosque that was supposed to be left closed "until the end of the world." Bring it on, baby! No Britons or Europeans were involved in the creation of these shrines. Rather, it's a dispute between the region's traditionally moderate Sufi Islam and the ever more assertive Wahhabist model exported worldwide by Saudi Arabia with Western petrodollars.

The shrines are official UNESCO World Heritage sites, but then so were the Buddhas of Bamyan blown up by the Taliban in Afghanistan a decade ago. What's next on the condemned list? Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, Bahrain's "Sheikh of Sheikhs" (he's like a supersized sheikh) has invited Egypt's President Morsi to "destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not" — a reference to the Muslim conqueror of Egypt back in the seventh century. Less controversially, Egypt's Salafi party does not see the need to destroy the Pyramids but does favor covering them in wax.

The Pyramids are the last of the Seven Wonders of the World still around in the 21st century, but that's no reason not to destroy them, as part of the new pan-Islamic identity's contempt for any alternative claims of allegiance — cultural, national, or historic.

We are in the third stage of modern Arab political history By Charles Krauthammer

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 04:24 AM PDT

Post-revolutionary Libya appears to have elected a relatively moderate pro-Western government. Good news, but tentative, because Libya is less a country than an oil well with a long beach and myriad tribes. Popular allegiance to a central national authority is weak. Even if the government of Mahmoud Jibril is able to rein in the militias and establish a functioning democracy, it will be the Arab Spring exception.

Consider: Tunisia and Morocco, the most Westernized of all Arab countries, elected Islamist governments. Moderate, to be sure, but Islamist still. Egypt, the largest and most influential, has experienced an Islamist sweep. The Muslim Brotherhood didn't just win the presidency. It won nearly half the seats in parliament, while more openly radical Islamists won 25 percent. Combined, they command more than 70 percent of parliament — enough to control the writing of a constitution (which is why the generals hastily dissolved parliament). As for Syria, if and when Bashar Assad falls, the Brotherhood will almost certainly inherit power. Jordan could well be next. And the Brotherhood's Palestinian wing (Hamas) already controls Gaza. What does this mean? That the Arab Spring is a misnomer.

This is an Islamist ascendancy, likely to dominate Arab politics for a generation. It constitutes the third stage of modern Arab political history. Stage I was the semicolonial-monarchic rule, dominated by Britain and France, of the first half of the 20th century. Stage II was the Arab-nationalist era — secular, socialist, anti-colonial, and anti-clerical — ushered in by the 1952 Free Officers Revolt in Egypt. Its vehicle was military dictatorship, and Gamal Nasser led the way. He raised the flag of pan-Arabism, going so far as changing Egypt's name to the United Arab Republic and merging his country with Syria in 1958. That absurd experiment — it lasted exactly three years — was to have been the beginning of a grand Arab unification, which, of course, never came.

Nasser also fiercely persecuted Islamists — as did his nationalist successors, down to Egypt's Hosni Mubarak and the Iraqi (Saddam Hussein) and Syrian (the Assads) Baathists — as the reactionary antithesis to Arab modernism. But the self-styled modernism of the Arab-nationalist dictators proved to be a dismal failure. It produced dysfunctional, semi-socialist, bureaucratic, corrupt regimes that left the citizenry (except where papered over by oil bounties) mired in poverty, indignity, and repression. Hence the Arab Spring, serial uprisings that spread east from Tunisia in early 2011. Many Westerners naïvely believed the future belonged to the hip, secular, tweeting kids of Tahrir Square.

Alas, this sliver of Westernization was no match for the highly organized, widely supported, politically serious Islamists who effortlessly swept them aside in national elections. This was not a Facebook revolution but the beginning of an Islamist one. Amid the ruins of secular nationalist pan-Arabism, the Muslim Brotherhood rose to solve the conundrum of Arab stagnation and marginality. "Islam is the answer," it preached, and carried the day. But what kind of political Islam? On that depends the future. The moderate Turkish version or the radical Iranian one? To be sure, Recep Erdogan's Turkey is no paragon. The increasingly authoritarian Erdogan has broken the military, neutered the judiciary, and persecuted the press.

There are more journalists in prison in Turkey than in China. Nonetheless, for now, Turkey remains relatively pro-Western (though unreliably so) and relatively democratic (compared to its Islamic neighborhood). For now, the new Islamist ascendancy in Arab lands has taken on the more benign Turkish aspect. Inherently so in Morocco and Tunisia; by external constraint in Egypt, where the military sees itself as guardian of the secular state, precisely as did Turkey's military in the 80 years from Ataturk to Erdogan.

Genuinely democratic rule may yet come to Arab lands. Radical Islam is the answer to nothing, as demonstrated by the repression, social backwardness, and civil strife of Taliban Afghanistan, Islamist Sudan, and clerical Iran.As for moderate Islamism, if it eventually radicalizes, it too will fail and bring on yet another future Arab Spring where democracy might actually be the answer (as it likely would have been in Iran had the mullahs not savagely crushed the Green Revolution).

Or it might adapt to modernity, accept the alternation of power with secularists, and thus achieve by evolution an authentic Arab-Islamic democratic norm. Perhaps. The only thing we can be sure of today, however, is that Arab nationalism is dead and Islamism is its successor. This is what the Arab Spring has wrought. The beginning of wisdom is facing that difficult reality. Charles Krauthammer is a nationally syndicated columnist. © 2012 the Washington Post Writers Group. National Review

Manusia Dalam Sangkar, Harimau Di Luar

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 05:09 AM PDT

2. Kalau hadir ke kenduri walimatul urus (kenduri kahwin) orang kerap salam berisi (hadiah wang yang diberi semasa bersalam). Kalau tak ada duit nak dikepit dalam tangan, maka segan ia nak pergi makan kenduri. Tetapi kalau ia menziarah orang mati, tidak segan pula salam tak berisi. Sepatutnya kalau menziarah keluarga si matilah kita patut memberi sedekah.

8. Semua ibubapa amat bimbang kalau-kalau anak mereka gagal dalam periksa. Maka dihantarlah ke kelas tuisyen walau pun banyak belanjanya. Tapi kalau anak tak boleh baca Quran atau solat, tak bimbang pula bahkan tak mahu hantar tuisyen baca Quran atau kelas khas mempelajari Islam. Kalau guru tuisyen sanggup dibayar sebulan RM20.00 satu pelajaran 8 kali hadir tapi kepada Tok Guru Quran nak bayar RM15.00 sebulan 20 kali hadir belajar pun menggeletar tangan. Bukankah terbalik amalan kita?

9. Kalau bekerja mengejar rezeki Allah tak kira siang malam, pagi petang, mesti pergi kerja. Hujan atau ribut tetap diharungi kerana hendak mematuhi peraturan kerja. Tapi ke rumah Allah (masjid) tak hujan, tak panas, tak ribut pun tetap tak datang ke masjid. Sungguh tak malu manusia begini, rezeki Allah diminta tapi nak ke rumahNya segan dan malas.

Bran Flakes Joke

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 02:30 AM PDT

The couple were 85 years old and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies.

Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade.

One day, their good health didn't help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven.

They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favourite clothes in the closet.

They gasped in astonishment when he said, 'Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.'

The old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. 'Why, nothing,' Peter replied, 'remember, this is your reward in Heaven..'

The old man looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth..

'What are the greens fees?,' grumbled the old man.

'This is heaven,' St. Peter replied. 'You can play for free, every day.'

Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch, with every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic deserts, free flowing beverages.

'Don't even ask,' said St. Peter to the man.. This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy.'

The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife.

'Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods and the decaffeinated tea?,' he asked.

That's the best part,' St. Peter replied.. 'You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like and you will never get fat or sick.

This is Heaven!'

The old man pushed, 'No gym to work out at?'

'Not unless you want to,' was the answer.

'No testing my sugar or blood pressure or....'

'Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourself.'

The old man glared at his wife and said, 'You and your bran Flakes. We could have been here ten years ago!'

Misi Tawan Selangor: Rakyat Mual Gambar Najib Di Komuter...

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Iklan sasar rakyat S'gor penuhi Komuter

"Inikan kempen Sayangi Selangor. Sepatutnya ada gambar Khalid baru seimbang. Sebab macam pelik, kempen sayang Selangor tapi gambar perdana menteri," katanya ketika ditemui Malaysiakini.

-mk

Ulasan GB

Najib Dimalukan Di Hari Koperasi Negara

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 12:10 AM PDT

Jika 3000 maka ditulisnya hanya 300 orang.

Contoh semasa perhimpunan BERSIH 1.0 dahulu, BERNAMA tanpa segan silu menyatakan kehadirannya cuma 4,000 orang!

Mengubah angka semata-mata nak "gah"kan UMNO BN....."
