[IKTIBAR] Kisah Seorang Perempuan Dengan Terung

[IKTIBAR] Kisah Seorang Perempuan Dengan Terung

[IKTIBAR] Kisah Seorang Perempuan Dengan Terung

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 11:01 AM PDT

Syaikh bertanya, adakah kamu ingin berkahwin? Dia diam.

Syaikh bertanya sekali lagi, adakah kamu ingin berkahwin?

Khalid's RM1 Billion Deal Fiasco...

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 08:48 AM PDT

Incredible and shocking!

Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim – you are truly brilliant. Talam Corporation Bhd belonging to Tan Sri Chan Ah Chye owes the Selangor state RM392 million but through your sheer brilliance, you now owe your Super Crony Tan Sri Chan Ah Chye!

What is your special relationship with this well-known Super Hypocrite with a record of fleecing ordinary house buyers?  This self-professed Born Again Christian has stolen the life savings of thousands of low income Selangor people.

But you, of course, chose to work with this Super Crony.

How else can you explain that the RM392millon he "hutang" the state has now become RM1 billion – the only difference is that the state now "hutang" him and not the other way around!

This reverse has happened in a cleverly orchestrated move in what can only be described as the corporate cheat of the century.

The three GLSs are Universiti Selangor and Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd a total of RM277 million, and SAP Holdings Bhd (RM115mil), a subsidiary of Kumpulan Hartanah Selangor, but they have not got a single sen from Chan Ah Chye.

Alamak!!!

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 07:49 AM PDT

Tunku mahkota enggan ulas dakwaan Uncle Seeker

"Apabila orang ingin menjatuhkan anda, ia hanya bermakna anda berada dia atas mereka, maka jangan sedih," katanya lagi.

Jangan sampai mahkota tercampak dik perbuatan Tuanku berdua
Jangan sampai Tuanku pula diletak di luar pagar istana
Nantinya maruah raja Melayu terhina angkara siapa?
Dan nantinya juga
Jangan disalahkan rakyat jika institusi Raja bersanggah ke muzium selama-lamanya!

The Mystery of Stonehenge

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 05:41 AM PDT

It was in the summer of 1997 that I visited Stonehenge by accident. In mid-August, that I flew to London in a bid to escape the horrible haze in Malaysia. In fact, it was so bad that I was unsure if at all the flight would take off on time. When I checked into a Bed and Breakfast Hotel in an old Victorian townhouse, I had no idea that the place was so haunted. After a terrifying night followed by another spooky experience that totally freaked me out, I checked out and took the first train out of London - to Bath (I wrote about that HERE.) After exploring the Roman Baths there and other scenic sites, I took a day tour to Stonehenge and Cotswold. Fifteen years down the road, memories of that visit and the experience remain fresh in my mind.

Upon reaching Stonehenge, I went to the mini museum before heading for the structures. The most remarkable experience I had during my visit was dowsing for ley lines there and also at Avesbury (another place I visited after Stonehenge). Basically, ley lines are energy lines which criss-cross the earth. The tour guide then distributed the dowsing rods (copper rods) to the group and asked us to walk around the place  with both rods in our hands. She told us that  if the rods crossed and uncrossed, it was a sign that we had walked over a ley line.

I was MOST skeptical when I head her hypothesis. Still, I walked around with both rods and the wind blowing strongly at my face and hair. And then, to my horror, as I walked over one area, both my dowsing rods began spinning powerfully in a clockwise direction! I gasped and stepped back - no movement. I stepped forward again and the rods were spinning. Most intrigued, I walked around and tried to see if there was a pattern in the ley lines. Indeed, the whole group looked a sight as we walked around silently, in awe of the place and power of the ley lines.

According to THIS SITE:

Stonehenge is positioned at the centre of a hub, or network, of alignment ley lines, making Stonehenge an energy portal, or a place of power. There are 14 major ley lines that converge at Stonehenge making a powerful vortex. One simple method of locating ley lines is by drawing a line connecting two old ancient sites, or churches. Churches were often built on ancient sites to acquire their energy, in some cases churches were built in the site of a henge, as was Winchester Cathedral, and at Avebury a whole village sits in the middle of a henge. These ley lines interconnect all of Britain's ancient sites......

A significant Wiltshire ley runs through Stonehenge, Old Sarum, Salisbury Cathedral and Clearbury Ring. Dowser Romy Wyeth, from Codford near Warminster, demonstrated to the BBC how a line of energy can be detected at the centre of Stonehenge, again at Old Sarum and running through to the Cathedral Close and beyond. The subject of ley lines - at least what they represent - is a controversial area but the strength of evidence is compelling. Many of Wiltshire's sacred sites are associated with ley lines and those who support the theory suggest that such locations act as a focus for these powerful earth energies - something of which our ancestors knew a great deal about. However, for many archaeologists, the idea is very much a matter for conjecture, arguing that it's more about coincidence than knowledge of the earth's energy lines.

According to Wikipedia:

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 2.0 miles (3.2 km) west of Amesbury and 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of a circular setting of large standing stones set within earthworks. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.

Archaeologists believe the iconic stone monument was constructed anywhere from 3000 BC to 2000 BC, as described in the chronology below. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first stones were erected in 2400–2200 BC,[2] whilst another theory suggests that bluestones may have been erected at the site as early as 3000 BC.

The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge monument. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.

Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge could possibly have served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains found on the site indicate that deposits contain human bone material from as early as 3000 BC, when the initial ditch and bank were first dug. Such deposits continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years. CLICK HERE for more.

Last month, The Week featured a very interesting article about how the mystery behind Stonehenge could be solved. Excerpt from the article:

Forget the druids and aliens. Scientists in Britain say they've figured out the real story behind the puzzling megalith.

Theories surrounding Stonehenge's origins seem to go back nearly as far as the stones themselves. Over the course of centuries, philosophers, scientists, and innumerable crackpots have tried to decode the meaning of the monument — composed of several enormous stones arranged in a circle thousands of years ago. Some said Stonehenge was brought to the English county of Wiltshire from Ireland by the wizard Merlin; others posited that it was a druidical temple, an architectural paean to the ancient Egyptians, or a kind of calendar; and still others insisted that aliens must have been involved, since prehistoric humans could not possibly have dragged the giant slabs from quarries more than 130 miles away. However, a research team from Britain now says it has the definitive answer to the riddle of Stonehenge. Here, a guide to the findings:

How was this study conducted?
The research team, made up of scientists from five universities in Britain, conducted "the largest program of archaeological research ever mounted on the iconic monument," according to Science 2.0. Researchers "worked to put Stonehenge in context, studying not just the monument but also the culture that created it," says CBS News.

So why was Stonehenge built?
Researchers say the monument symbolizes the unification of Stone Age Britain, which for centuries had been riven by an East-West divide. The stones are thought to represent different tribal factions, brought together in concentric circles to commemorate the peace. The erection of Stonehenge coincided with the development of an "island-wide culture," in which previously insulated and isolated communities began making similar houses, pottery, and tools. The Daily Mail carried an article by Tamara Cohen about how scientists are now closer to cracking one aspect of the mystery after working out the exact spot where some of the rocks came from.

The 5,000-year-old circle of stones – thought at various times to have been a temple of healing, a calendar, or even a royal cemetery – have been traced to an outcrop 150 miles away in north Pembrokeshire. READ MORE HERE.

July's full moon

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 04:12 AM PDT

For your information, this isn't an under-exposed picture of the sun low down in the sky. No. Rather, this is a picture of the full moon over the roof of my neighbour's house. I took the picture this morning - it was just one of many - when I was awakened by bright moonlight streaming into the bedroom.

Time was about 5.30a.m. Despite feeling groggy, I had the presence of mind to go search for my camera. Turning to the window, I snapped a few shots without really thinking about the subject. They were bad, and that really woke me up.

So I began fiddling with the controls. It's good that this Fujifilm F500EXR came with manual control, better than my old Panasonic FS15, but there are still lots of limitations. Perhaps a DSLR is the next step to go. Anyway, there's also a 15X zoom on this camera which is of course very slightly better than my even older Minolta Konica Dimage Z5 camera which has a 12X zoom.

I took about 20 shots with the camera. All hand-held and despite the moon being so bright, there were still a few that turned out blurred because of camera shake. Image stabilisation does help but not totally. You would still need to learn how to steady yourself when using a long shutter speed or maxing out on the zoom control.

I just processed the pictures through Picasa and this, I should believe, is about one of the better pictures from the camera. BTW, it has been digitally enlarged to fit into the frame. Not what I would prefer to do normally.

Robert Fisk Demonizes Mideast's Persecuted Christians

Robert Fisk, the Middle East correspondent for the U.K.'s widely-read Independent, recently showed why it is that Islamic jihadists and terrorists, including the late Osama bin Laden, strongly recommend his propaganda to Western readers.

Robert Fisk: Wondering why Mideast Christians won't support Islamists.

In a recent article, Fisk goes out of his way to demonize the abused Christian minorities of the Middle East for supporting those secularist leaders most likely to preserve their freedoms and dignity. For instance, after portraying the Middle East's "old guard" in the worst possible terms, he complains that "Ahmed Shafiq, the Mubarak loyalist, has the support of the Christian Copts, and Assad has the support of the Syrian Christians. The Christians support the dictators. Not much of a line, is it?"

In Fisk's way of thinking, Christians of Egypt and Syria are unpatriotic freedom-haters because they support secularists, whereas the Sharia-pushing Islamists are patriotic freedom-lovers for not.

"Not much of a line, is it?"—especially from someone who supposedly lives and travels in the Middle East and is deemed an authority on the region. Completely missing from his narrative is why Christians are supporting Shafiq and Assad: because the alternatives, the Islamists, have been making their lives a living hell.

Fisk's biased narrative is, of course, not original to him, but rather originates with his friends—the Islamists. Soon after the first presidential elections in Egypt, many Islamists bemoaned Shafiq's good showing, laying the blame directly on Egypt's Christian Copts, who reportedly came out in large numbers voting for the secular candidates. Tarek al-Zomor, a prominent figure of the Gama'a al-Islamiyya, the terrorist organization that slaughtered some 60 European tourists, including several of Fisk's countrymen, during the Luxor Massacre, "demanded an apology from the Copts" for voting for Shafiq, threatening that "this was a fatal error."

Others, like Abu Ismail, the Salafi presidential candidate who was disqualified, expressed "great disappointment" in "our Coptic brethren," saying that "I do not understand why the Copts so adamantly voted for Ahmed Shafiq," portraying it as some sort of conspiracy between the Copts, the old regime, and even Israel: "Exactly what relationship and benefit do the Copts have with the old regime"?

The uncritical Fisk follows suit and asks the same questions, portraying the Mideast's Christians as unpatriotic.

Missing from the Islamists'—and Fisk's—narrative is the fact that Christians are under attack by Islamists, especially in Egypt and Syria, where Christian women and children and regularly abducted, molested, and forced to convert; where churches and monasteries are regularly attacked; where blasphemy laws imprison or kill and calls for jizya are back—in short, where Christians are persecuted (see entries for Egypt and Syria in my monthly "Muslim Persecution of Christians" for an idea). Moreover, the ultimate goal of Fisk's supposedly "freedom-loving Islamists—the enforcement of a decidedly anti-freedom Sharia law—will naturally spell disaster for Christians, since this draconian law code emphatically condemns non-Muslim "infidels" to dhimmi status—barely-tolerated, second-class "citizens" of the Islamic state.

Back in the real world, the reaction to Islamist complaints that Copts are not voting for them has been one of amazement. As one Coptic activist put it: "Did they [complaining Islamists] really expect a Christian to choose a president to represent him from those who cut off the ear of a Christian, blocked the railways in objection to the appointment of a Christian governor in Qena, burn down several churches and who are diligently working to write a Constitution which undermines the rights of Christians?"

Even Egyptian Muslim writer Khaled Montasser, in an article titled "The Muslim Brotherhood Asks Why Christians Fear Them?!" explained that the Brotherhood's own official documents and fatwas decree several anti-Christian measures, including the destruction of churches and the prevention of burying Christian "infidels" near Muslim graves—hence why Christians are not voting for Islamists.

As for Syria, since the uprising, "opposition forces"—that is, Islamists—have been attacking Christians and churches, including through "kidnappings and gruesome murders." None of this happened before the uprising and under Assad's secular rule. As an earlier report put it, "Should Assad fall, it is feared that Syria could go the way of Iraq post-Saddam Hussein. Saddam, like Assad, restrained the influence of militant Islamists, but after his fall they were free to wreak havoc on the Christian community; hundreds of thousands of Christians were consequently forced to flee the violence."

Should the "opposition" get their way and topple the Assad regime, the same brutal pattern experienced by Iraq's Christian minorities—who have been liked to, and killed off like, dogs, to the point of nearing extinction—will come to Syria, where a preacher recently urged Muslims to "tear apart, chop up and feed" Christians who support Assad "to the dogs."

All of these "subtleties" are completely missed by the Independent's Middle East foreign correspondent. Instead, he bemoans how those in Washington who support secular rulers "will want to pump up Christian fears and frighten the West with the awfulness of 'Muslim fundamentalism.'"

At a time when Christian minorities in the Islamic world are experiencing a form of persecution unprecedented since the pre-colonial era, it is commonplace for Western "reporters" to ignore or whitewash their plight. Robert Fisk, however, takes it a step further and paints these persecuted Christians as the bad guys, thereby facilitating their ongoing sufferings. He and the Independent should be ashamed of themselves. Raymond Ibrahim

According to a story in yesterday's Mideast Christian News, Muslims in the village of Basra in Alexandria, Egypt, surrounded the local Coptic church, St. Lyons, during divine liturgy, "demanding that visiting Copts leave the church before the completion of prayers, and threatening to burn down the church if their demand was not met." The priest, Father Severus, hurriedly contacted police by phone asking for aid only to be told to comply with their demands, "and do not let buses with visitors to come to the church anymore." In face of such threats, Christian worshippers exited the church halfway through liturgy to jeers outside. As they drove away, Muslims hurled stones at their buses, and the priest was warned by "salafis and extremists" never again to allow visitors to the church, otherwise they would "destroy it."

Muslim Persecution of Christians: May, 2012

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 04:18 AM PDT

June 29, 2012 • Gatestone Institute

Unlike those nations, such as Saudi Arabia, that have eliminated Christianity altogether, Muslim countries with significant Christian minorities saw much persecution during the month of May: in Egypt, Christians were openly discriminated against in law courts, even as some accused the nation's new president of declaring that he will "achieve the Islamic conquest of Egypt for the second time, and make all Christians convert to Islam"; in Indonesia, Muslims threw bags of urine on Christians during worship; in Kashmir and Zanzibar, churches were set aflame; and in Mali Christianity "faces being eradicated."

Did Those Statues "Walk"?

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 02:10 AM PDT

When I was in Std 3, I remember how history fascinated me to bits. Studying about the Paleolithic Age, Neaderthals etc spurred my interest in archaeology. At one point, I wanted to be an archaeologist until my mom asked me if I wanted to survive on Bah-Kut-Teh made from dinosaur bones. That changed my mind forever. I know I would not have survived as an archaeologist because of my 'puteri lilin' characteristics which have been inherited by both my boys. Prolonged periods under the son trigger migraines, headaches and then I will be sick with fever for a few days. Still, all that never robbed me of my deep interest in the unknown. As such, I will be featuring a few posts on history. Check out The Giants of The Solomon Islands which I posted yesterday.

Thanks to one blogger whom I follow, Coyote Prime, I came across the following article about the statues in Easter Island from the Archaeology News Network:

Easter Island's giant statues "walked" to their locations

The startling claim comes from archaeologists Terry Hunt of the University of Hawaii and Carl Lipo of California State University Long Beach, who showed how as few as 18 people could move a 5-ton statue with just some ropes and hopes. It sounds impossible, and contradicts other current theories. But it jibes with ancient village legends.

"The experts can say whatever they want," 25-year-old Rapa Nui resident Suri Tuki told National Geographic. "But we know the truth. The statues walked."

Some have suggested the 887 giant heads currently documented on the 63-square mile in the middle of the Pacific Ocean were built by stranded extraterrestrials, such as best-selling Swiss author Erich von Daniken. Others theorize the Peruvian Incas carved them. Modern science links them instead to Polynesia -- but how these peoples moved the heads from the quarry across miles of rocky island had remained a mystery. Scientists may have just discovered how.

The next post will be on Stonehenge.

BN Sesak Nafas: Kaum India Bersatu Sokong Ambiga

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 02:18 AM PDT

BN berisiko kehilangan sokongan masyarakat India selepas gesaan 'Gantung Ambiga'

"Mengapa Ambiga dijadikan kambing hitam?" soal beliau.

-TMI

Indian community unites for Ambiga

There is an old joke about unity within the Indian community.

During British rule in Malaya, the British ruler was asked: How do you manage the three distinctively different races in Malaya? He answered: "It is simple. To the Malays, I give them government jobs and they are happy. To the Chinese, I give them all the business licences they want and they are happy. For the Indians, I approve all the associations they want to form. They will fight among themselves and they will never come back to me for anything."

The Malaysian Indian community has so many diversified views on issues and there are so many NGOs representing the Indian community on various sectors. These NGOs often clash among themselves and, on most occasions, face internal squabbles.

Indians are also politically divided through several political parties despite being a minority community.

However, during the last one week, surprisingly all the Indian NGOs and political leaders alike were united in their common stand in defending Bersih leader S Ambiga on the remarks passed against her by the Sri Gading MP Mohamad Aziz.

For the last one week, the Tamil media were flooded with press statements by notable Indian personalities, political leaders and Indian NGOs who came out in full force defending Ambiga and demanding action against Mohamad for his remarks. It was a rare moment for the Indian community to witness such a unity in recent times.

This prompted even Mohamad to credit the Indian community for coming out united in their stand in defending Ambiga.

Even MIC supports Ambiga

Even MIC president G Palanivel voiced his objection on the remarks by Mohamad and warned the Umno-BN leadership that they will fail to get the Indian votes in the 13th general election if the attacks on Ambiga continue.

He was concerned that while MIC and Prime Minster Najib Tun Razak were working hard to convince the Indian community to vote for BN through their various initiatives, there were elements like Mohamad, who derailed their plans by making racially slanted remarks.

Another MIC leader, M Saravanan, despite being a deputy minister, also slammed the government for making Ambiga popular with its actions.

Ambiga's stupendous rise in popularity has clearly affected and dented the political image of MIC, which now fears she could become their real threat in the election, only if she decides to campaign openly against BN.

In 2008, MIC had to convince the Indian voters to vote for BN despite the five Hindraf leaders being held under ISA. The MIC then failed miserably in its mission.

This time when MIC was happy that there were no such issues, the government's attacks on Ambiga have put the party in another dilemma.

Will Ambiga contest?

Ambiga has even started attending Indian-based functions and has begun interacting with Indian- based NGOs. Recently, she attended a Tamil community function in Klang and was given a grand reception.

She received thunderous applause during her appearance on stage but was ridiculed by some in the Tamil newspapers later for her lack of proficiency in speaking in Tamil despite it being her mother tongue.

It is believed that in addition to the Pakatan Rakyat parties, many Indian-based NGOs are lining up to invite her for their functions.

This has put MIC and other Indian leaders in BN component parties like Gerakan and PPP in a quandary. Instead of highlighting the BN policies and future plans for the betterment of the Indian community, every other day they are forced to defend the government.

With the Indian community's total attention and focus now on Ambiga, the question that looms in everyone's mind is whether she will contest in the forthcoming general election.

Although she has denied the prospects of contesting in the 13th general election, political sources believe that the continued attacks on her may force her to choose a political platform to continue her public role after the polls. Pakatan parties would be more than willing to accommodate her for a parliamentary seat.

Recently, there were some reports that she might be fielded as a common independent candidate for the Bersih movement in one of the seats in the Klang Valley and that the opposition would let her win by not fielding any candidates against her, paving the way for her to be elected as an independent candidate and to be the voice of Bersih in Parliament.

Alternatively, she may choose to campaign for the opposition without contesting for a seat. In such an event, without any doubt, she would sway a bulk of the Indian votes away from BN.

[VIDEO] Anwar: Agih Projek Kepada Ahli Keluarga Perbuatan Curi Wang Rakyat

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 12:15 AM PDT

"Sekarang, hutang negara RM538 bilion. Ketua Audit Negara lapor, kebocoran belanja tahunan negara sehingga RM20 bilion.

"Apa beza Pakatan dengan BN? (Umno bila) ada kuasa, hanya hendak cari wang. Saham Bumiputera pun dia(Umno) sapu.

"Macam mana negeri Pakatan kumpul duit?

"Bila kita jawab, Umno kata Anwar alat Cina. Politik tak boleh macam itu. Kalau orang Melayu kena pukul, sakit. Kalau orang India kena pukul pun, sakit juga. Negeri ini bukan gangster punya," katanya. -KD

Rainforest World Music Festival 2012 (RWMF)

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 09:00 PM PDT

I have been talking about going to the Rainforest World Music Festival since decade ago...  Very sad to say i haven't visited the RWMF yet. Last year, i told my Sarawakian friend that i wanna to plan to visit the RWMF this year. Emm.... Nothing happen as i kind of forgot the event until recently i saw this poster.

Picture adapted from RWMF.net
Surprisingly no radio station talking about this event and not much people promoting about it. So, now it's too late for me to get the flight ticket, hotel accommodation and the entrance ticket to the RWMF 2012. I bet there still have the package but it should be costing a bomb... Maybe i should plan in ahead for RWMF 2013 then... Anyone can offer me a stay in Kuching?

BTW, anyone going for RWMF 2012?

Rupanya Berebut Piala Nombor 1 Dalam Hudud, PAS Tak Kisah Malah Sedia Bantu

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 10:26 PM PDT

Ayub cadang Johor terajui hukum hudud

-SH

Harun: Pas sedia bantu Umno

Ulasan GB

Oh, bererebut piala nak jadi nombor 1 rupanya. PAS tak kisah, jika hendak laksanakan hudud, teruskan.

"Kalau nak potong tangan, sama-sama kena potong tangan, kalau jel, sama-sama masuk jel. Jenayah sama hukuman pun patut sama.

Sama seperti perbankan Islam satu ketika. Pada awalnya masyarakat bukan Islam prejudis terhadapnya, tetapi apabila ia dilaksanakan, ramai pula yang bukan Islam turut menyertai sistem kewangan dan perbankan Islam yang tiada riba malah perbankan konvensyenal juga turut menyediakan produk-produk Islam.

2001: Mechanics of My Hope

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 07:16 PM PDT

This article was written by me in 2001.

Mechanics of My Hope
Nurul Izzah Anwar

Regrets, they say, are a part of life. A life led without regrets is a life not well lived. I've had regrets, as I'm sure most of us have. I am not regretful of how my life turned out (yes, I am aware that this is only my 21styear on Earth) but instead, regretful of how slow I am in reaching the realm of idealism.

Life for me began with a certain sense of normalcy, and definitely devoid of any feeling of youthful exuberance mingled with any leaning towards a meaningful idealism. This was certainly the existing scenario, up until the September of 1998.

The month before of the same year, saw me as a young teenager without a strong sense of conviction or idealism -they say ignorance is bliss. Perhaps that categorically explains much of the feeling at that particular time. A time of busy studying, hanging out with friends and unconscious of worldly cares.

Then one fine month in 1998, I wrote a letter to my dearest father. It was his birthday letter, since there was very little choice of presents in the dusty town of Tronoh, while you were experiencing your early days of student life.

I wrote him of my soul-searching endeavour to find the deeper meaning in this life of ours, on how I often wondered of his younger days, filled with excitement and rebellion. But most of all, I wrote to him to inquire on how it felt like to lead a life filled with meaning and filled with idealism; the core ingredients in the struggle for justice and truth. It was in the month of August, written while I was obligingly ignoring my lectures and missing my family, especia my father. I don't know why I wrote it, but I remembered how curious I was, filled with eagerness and glee, awaiting impatiently for a reply.

I knew very little of his heydays back in campus, except for the things that my uncles and aunts would tell me.  He would often joke about his cabinet experiences, or rather, mishaps. But about Baling, UM, the famous demonstrations, we kids know so little of. His earlier incarceration in the year 1974 was never discussed thoroughly with the rest of us. I wondered how he overcame that particular challenge. In having a sense of pride, I did wish I had a first hand insight as to how it all went.

Dissatisfaction overcame my whole being. How could I then, ever be satisfied with the life I was  leading, lacking in excitement and meaning, and all things spicy –only to be boring down educational books, on atoms and force and Einstein's theory of Relativity? I must know everything there is to know about this father of mine to satisfy my hunger for knowledge and cure my soul of this longing and emptiness!

I've waited until now for my queries to be answered. But, as God had planned it, September 1998 arrived the next month and before I knew it, ironically, my wishes were granted. That is not to say it did not come with a heavy price.

Everything happened all at once. The world, filled with such innocence and lighthearted candor before, slowly became blurred with the picture of uncertainty and apprehension.

And then it slowly came to me. In reliving these tragic moments, I had found my answers. You go through life experiences and relive moment to moment. Every moment has meaning that is not to be missed.

Events on the month of September 1998 have been discussed at length by various personalities. We could, venture further -in reliving the tragedy, supposedly seen from my eyes. But I will not go there. I will, instead discuss on how it had shaped me into who I am now, although not very different from the young, impressionable teenage girl I was before but yet, some things are altered. And everything, from how you greet each coming day to how meaningful a fatherly hug can be has changed forever.

How you view suffering -especially seen happening to others and how you value ideals and principles, as the very meaning of life itself has changed tremendously for me. I could no longer shut my eyes from the truth. I could no longer hide in my cocoon of safety and not knowing. I must embrace this challenge and accept it as the will of God.

For we will never be burdened with a burden greater than our strength and there exists hikmah in every single experience that graces our life.

"On no soul does Allah place a burden greater than he can bear" - Al-Baqarah, verse 286

One of the things I remembered most is the ISA period. The period of pure darkness and fright. Where your only solace comes from your belief in God and the phrase that was constantly repeated was that whatever happens, whatever anyone did to us, God will somehow save us.

Then a small flicker of hope appeared about a week after my father's detention under the Internal Security Act. Destiny had it that I should travel abroad –to further the cause for reform, to advance the call for justice and to reach out to the outside world.

It proved to be one of the most difficult and formidable tasks that I had to perform. Challenges and choices present themselves in a most peculiar way. I was torn between what I deemed as right and at the same time, what others thought as unwise.

It was a time of reckoning and coming to terms with maturity. With a single act, I felt and was made to feel as though I could free my father and secure success for the movement or fail everyone and face the impending doom.

All of this depended on the choice of whether I would or would not meet with the Presidents of Indonesia and the Philippines respectively. Being 18 years of age, and clueless of world politics were both extremely discouraging and far from being helpful.

You hear advices, taunts, threats and praises being thrown to you while the people who are dear to you try their very best to secure success. It is not that the things they spoke of were exaggerated. It is just that at times, one must always keep focus of things and never blow them out of proportion. Politics takes time to digest, I suppose. Naivete alone helped the girl of eighteen to believe that she could help free her father and triumph the movement during her short trip overseas.

But there is beauty in being naïve. Because you never lose sight of hope. Hope for a better tomorrow, in the Asian context; a more constructive diplomacy. That took place as I shook hands with President Habibie and President Estrada. I remembered the risk taken and the kindness granted to a daughter of a prisoner, who was wrongfully accused. Yes, maybe it was easier for me to champion his cause for I am his daughter, but for them and the hundreds of thousands of people who have thrown caution to the wind? It is they who should be applauded for within them lies the true meaning of idealism, of holding to what is true and principles that are outlined in our religious and moral values. But all this proved to be only the starting point, of something far more arduous than any one of us could have imagined.

Time is to be of essence. Time helps us understand and helps us gather strength in the days to come. And at times, it can make one grow increasingly impatient. As the frequency of the trips made abroad increased, so did my hopes decrease. I have wondered from time to time, when will the struggle eventually lead to success. I have searched deep within my soul, spent restless nights thinking and worrying. It did seem so easy and short when we first started but now…

Then, stopping myself, I started to remember those who have spent each restless night in an empty, dark and lonely cell.

How on earth are they to cope with the bleakness of reality? Time goes by very slowly, and more so when you're imprisoned. These people have suffered greatly, but their souls remain strong, their convictions harder than steel. They have persevered because they hold firmly to their beliefs, the belief that truth, justice will prevail, the iron bars but a short journey in the life long struggle of upholding all that is good.

It has been three years since the tragic events took place. The movement has taken a quieter tone, with repression of speech, the total government control of mainstream media, the jailing of opposition leaders and the September 11th attacks have further lend credence to increase the crackdown on opposition.

But all this should not be a seen as a despondent time in the struggle. All movements have its high and low junctures, but we must always remember that to achieve success, one must always observe a certain degree of patience and perseverance. This in turn, will help in generating success, however small.

My heart quenched in fear every time my father made any reference to the laboriously long struggle of Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in jail, before apartheid was successfully abolished. But yet, it did provide a sense of solace and a glimmer of hope of the impending future.

Nelson Mandela remained unscathed in the efforts of his captors to leave him embittered. He maintained his dignity and showered others with his magnanimity. He held no grudges against his oppressors and treated them with civility. We can only strive to reach that level of human spirit.

3 years is not a long time, by normal standards of a struggle, and we will certainly pass through many trials and tribulations before we succeed. As people of the book, success is not measured in worldly accomplishments only, but of a further attainment, that with sincerity and pureness of heart, shall be rewarded in the hereafter.

"And fight them on, until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith
in Allah"
– Al-Baqarah  verse 193

"And do thou be patient for thy patience is but from Allah; nor grieve over them, and distress not thyself because of their plots. For Allah is with those who restraint themselves and those who
do good."
– An –Nahl verse 127-128

We will encounter questions in this life – questions, from the simple and mundane ones to the philosophical meaning of our existence. The important thing is to remember to reach out to the answers and try with all your might, to fulfill our mission in reliving humanity. Never take happiness, love, justice and all things virtuous for granted. Hold them dearly within your heart, for in all these virtues, lie the essence of God.

And to all this, and so much more, I have one main person to thank and to cherish for the rest of my life – my beloved father, Anwar Ibrahim.

[BERGAMBAR] Bas Terbalik Di Lebuh Raya, 11 Cedera

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 07:37 PM PDT
