The Dangerous Trends in Technology

The Dangerous Trends in Technology

The Dangerous Trends in Technology

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 10:58 AM PDT

The more I read about the changing trends in technology, the more I am convinced that we are heading for disaster. Crazy? Nope. Let me share a few observations with you even though it is way past my bedtime.

1. Never Sync Your Contacts

Many use smartphones for various reasons but are unaware of the dangers of synching contacts. It is advisable to use separate email addresses/facebook/twitter/whatever accounts for your smart phone and NEVER synch contacts.

You would not want people to know your contacts if there are security issues.

For instance, Violet Blue wrote in Cnet:

An alarming number of people are reporting that the new e-mail address Facebook forced on users this week is changing their address books while intercepting and losing unknown amounts of e-mail.
Facebook users say contacts' e-mail addresses on phones and personal devices have been altered without their consent -- and their e-mail communication is being redirected elsewhere, and lost.
And you would not want people to know who are your contacts in different accounts for with that knowledge, they have privy to all the information they want to know about you and your life which will be an open for all and sundry to see.

The best thing to do is to save your contacts in vcf or Vcardand then transfer the contacts separately or to transfer your contacts to your SD card. Never sync and always backup in your computer.

2. Chrome Remote Viewing Plug-in

In October 2011, Cnet reported Google's release of a new Chrome extension to let a person on one computer remotely control another across the network.
The Chrome Remote Desktop beta version is a browser-based equivalent of remote desktop software for conventional operating systems. Such software is handy for IT administrators managing employees' machines, people taking care of their relatives' computers, or individuals getting access to their own machines from afar.

"Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is the first installment on a capability allowing users to remotely access another computer through the Chrome browser or a Chromebook," the release notes said. "Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is fully cross-platform, so you can connect any two computers that have a Chrome browser, including Windows, Linux, Mac, and Chromebooks."
Chrome Remote Desktop BETA lets you remotely access another computer through your Google Chrome browser. Conversely, you can also use the app to let someone remotely access your computer, perfect for times when you need help solving a computer problem, but the person you'd like to get help from isn't close by. Last but not least, you can take advantage of the app's functionality to access your own computers remotely.
  • Add the Chrome Remote Desktop ap to your browser
  • Share your computer
  • Access a computer that has been shared with you
  • Troubleshoot sharing issues

4. Warning about the dangers in browser syncing

Extract from Infosecurity reported:

Chrome v19 introduced a 'tab sync'. This in turn, claims Imperva, introduces a new threat vector for business – a threat Imperva terms BYOB (bring your own browser).

With more and more people working from many more devices in many different locations, tab sync could be a boon. "When you're signed in to Chrome," announced Google, "your open tabs are synced across all your devices, so you can quickly access them from the 'Other devices' menu on the New Tab page."

(Don't panic if you can't find it, 'the tab sync feature will be rolled out... gradually over the coming weeks'.) But Google also adds, "Signing in to Chrome also syncs your bookmarks, apps, extensions, history, themes, and other settings." This is what bothers Imperva, which sees two potential areas of compromise: personal data and browser behavior. More specifically, it says, "It provides the hacker with a simple way to leap from the victim's home environment (usually very insecure) to work environment (usually secured – updated AV and other end point solutions)."

5. Security Holes (Info-security)

Google has shipped version 21 of its Chrome browser, fixing 15 bugs in the process.

Only one of the security fixes is for a critical hole: a crash in tab handling vulnerability in Linux, related Google in its security advisory. Six fall into the high-risk category, and the rest are low to medium-risk bugs.

The high-risk bugs include integer overflows in PDF viewer, out-of-bounds writes in PDF viewer, buffer overflow in WebP decoder, and a number of use-after-free flaws.

Google was 'thrifty'' with the bug bounties, handing out only $2,000–$1,000 each to Arthur Gerkis and Juri Aedla. Many of the bugs were detected using the AddressSanitizer.

6. Imperva says hackers are tapping Google's powerful search engine features once again

7. Danger in syncing contact with Gmail

8. Dangers and pitfalls of Dropbox

The list is endless and I wish I could continue but it is almost two a.m. and I have to hit the sack. This is one of the rare moments when I am up so late as this Cinderella turns in by 11.30p.m. each night. Reading about all this kept my eyes wide away but now the eyelids are too heavy to continue.

So, use your smartphones, tablets or what-have-you's if you must but take precautions. As for me, it is back to basics of pen and paper now....

Hong Kong: Awesome Night View From The Peak

Hong Kong, View From The Peak

Hong Kong: Awesome Night View From The Peak - Something that I've stopped posting for quite some times and that's my trip to China – Hong Kong last year. Suddenly remembered that I still have quite many thing about my travel to China to share, so I quickly sit in front of my computer and start looking for photos before I forget about it.

Hong Kong, View From The Peak

One of the nice experience in Hong Kong was heading to The Peak at night to check out the Hong Kong night view. I tell you, queuing up for the tram at night is a disaster, it could take you more than an hour for it as it's a long queue, everyday! You can take the bus, if you know how to, or like us, we took the haggling cab waiting by the roadside. The cab charges 4 of us for HK$40 which I think pretty reasonable after some negotiation, as it brings us all the way up, and cutting all the long queue.

Hong Kong, View From The Peak

Hong Kong, View From The Peak

The temperature up there was superb, chilly, windy, cold. It's very happenings up there, lots of people were taking photos of the spectacular view of Hong Kong from top. It's just so awesome. At 8pm every night, there's the light show, it's weird that you see the light but you can't hear any music like you can hear at the Avenue Of Star. Nevertheless, it's worth to visit The Peak at night. I've been there in the morning before.

Sunrise: Teluk Tempoyak @ Batu Maung, Penang

Sunrise: Teluk Tempoyak @ Batu Maung, Penang

Sunrise: Teluk Tempoyak @ Batu Maung, Penang – Checking out sunrise/sunset is one of my favourite thing to do now. The moment seeing the sun rises from the horizon, sun ray penetrating the dark sky is like greeting you of a coming new day, the feeling is just awesome. However, it's not easy to wake up early for me. HAHA. Anyway, let's check out some sunrise that I went watching at Teluk Tempoyak, a fishing village at Batu Maung, Penang few weeks back.

Sunrise: Teluk Tempoyak @ Batu Maung, Penang

Many friends told me that Teluk Tempoyak has the best sunrise in Penang, with the view of second Penang Bridge at the background and with clear blue sky, it's even prettier. It was far from my place, took about 30 minutes to reach there. The fishing village was quiet in the morning. I was afraid that no sunrise can be seen because of the strong haze present on that morning. I waited anxiously with my girlfriend Hueisean for the sunrise.

The haze looks like fog in picture and it makes me feels like Hangzhou, China. =D

The place is a mix of peaceful nature and a bit of messiness. One side, you can see green hill and hear the sound of the wave hitting the shore, another side you can see the construction of Second Penang Bridge. It was just two of us at the shore waiting for sunrise, we waited not long, about 7.25am, we saw the little round sun up in the air. Although there's no clear blue sky, the sighting was cool with a red round sun blending with the view of Second Penang Bridge. Awesome.

The Golden Sun, reminded me of the game on Gameboy Advance.

Hueisean posing on the bridge.

Just sad that it's not a clear blue sky morning.  If I've got omph next time, I'll come back again, it's pretty far to me. Haha. After the sunrise, we went for breakfast at Church Street.

Why We Didn't Do It

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 07:25 AM PDT

Thanks to Angela who sent me this *coughs* joke. It is a tad outrageous but since it is a long weekend...what the heck..I am posting it for the sake of humour. My apologies if this offends anyone for that was not my intention at all.

To My Dear Wife,

During the past year, I have tried to make love to you 365 times.

I have succeeded 12 times. The following list is why I didn't succeed often.

Your responses -

1. The sheets are clean. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .54 times

2. It is too late. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .17 times

3. Too tired from shopping all day. . . . . . . . . . 49 times

4. It is too early. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20 times

5. It is too hot. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 times

6. Pretending to be asleep. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 times

7. The neighbors will hear us. . . . . . . . . . . . .3 times

8. Headache. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .22 itmes

9. Sunburn. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 times

10. Your Mother will hear us. . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 times

11. Not in the mood. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 43 times

12. You will wake the baby. . . . . . . . . . .. . . . 17 times

13. Watching the late show. . . . . . . . . .. . . . . 6 times

14. New Hairdo. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 times

15. Too sore. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .16 times

16. Wrong time of month. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .36 times

17. Have to get up early. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19 times

Of the 12 times I did succeed, the activity was not satisfactory because twice you just laid there, 4 times you reminded me that there was a crack in the ceiling, 3 times you told me to hurry up and get it over with, twice I had to wake you up to tell you that I had finished, and once I was afraid I had hurt you because I felt you move.

To My Dear Husband,

I think that you have gotten things a little confused. Here are the real reasons you did not get it more often than you did.....

1. Came home drunk & tried to attack the cat. . . . . 15 x

2. Did not come home at all. . . . . . . . . . .36 times

3. Did not c*m. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 times

4. Came too soon. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 33 times

5. Went soft before you got it in. . . . . . . . 33 times

6. Toes cramped. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10 times

7. Working too late. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .38 times

8. Have to get up early to play golf. . . . . 29 times

9. Had a fight & someone kicked you in the balls. . 2 times

10. Caught Herman in your zipper. . . . . . . .4 times

11. Caught a cold & your nose kept running ...3 times

12. Burned your tongue on hot coffee. . . . . . . . . .3 times

13. You had a splinter in your finger. . . . . . . . . 2 times

14. Came in your PJ's while reading a dirty book. . .16 times

15. Watching football on TV. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 98 times

16. Hemorrhoids flared up. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 times

Of the times we did get together, the reason I laid still was because you were screwing the sheets. I didn't say anything about a crack in the ceiling. What I said was, would you prefer me on my back or kneeling.

The time you felt me move was because you farted and I was trying to breathe!!

Have a lovely evening!! :-)

Aidilfitri and Muslims divide...

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 07:11 AM PDT

In 1985, I celebrated Aidilfitri in Iraq's Shiite city of Karbala. For the spirit of Syawal, the Muslims - Shiite and Sunni - were united although Saddam Hussein did force the Shiite men to help him fought the war with Shiite Iran.

The Iraqi Shiite soldiers were pushed up as the frontliners, forming barricades for the Sunni comrades. The Shiite hated him for that, and so were the Iranians.

After the Eid prayer, the Shiites and the Sunnis would embrace and hug each other, before sectarian war started all over again a few days later.

It saddened me, really.

Back home, I observe a big split among the Muslims. However, its a political split.

I wonder who will profit and take advantage of their ideological divide if it goes on and on...

Anyway, SELAMAT HARI RAYA to all Malaysians.

Takut Pada PAS, Situasi Sudah Kelam-kabut

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 06:32 AM PDT

-Selena Tay

Warnings on Burma’s racist hatred

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 04:10 AM PDT

Source: Warnings on Burma's racist hatred, by Katie Hamann in Australia Networks News

A UK-based Burmese scholar has warned Burma's opposition NLD party, including democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, are implicit in the racism that's fuelling ongoing tension between Buddhists and the minority Muslim Rohingya.

Clashes this year between ethnic Buddhist Rakhine and the Rohingya in Burma's west have left more than 70 people dead.

The government has since clamped down on the Rohingya, a minority already described by the UN as one of the world's most persecuted peoples.

Dr Maung Zarni, a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, says there is strong evidence the overwhelmingly Buddhist government is behind the campaign against the Rohingya, motivated by racism.

And he says the opposition NLD party, including Nobel peace prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, are implicit in that racism as they campaign to win a landslide victory at the next election.

"So in other words, Suu Kyi needs to keep the Burmese majority happy, ideologically, and that requires that she stays clear of the Rohingya issue, regardless of whether it's a direct challenge to her image as a human rights champion," he said.

He's described ingrained racism within Burma's majority Buddhist society as the 'scariest' part of Burma's recent moves towards democracy.

"The Burmese democratic transition is bringing about not necessarily concrete and irreversible democratisation process but the most ugly racism the world is witnessing," Dr Maung Zarni said.

The Shallows: What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 02:26 AM PDT

Since 2011, my memory had been deteriorating and i was seriously worried. I went to see my regular family doctor three times about this problem. After a thorough medical check-up, he advised me to take gingko on a regular basis. Months down the road, there was little improvement and he advised me to go for tests and scans.  One thing or sure was that my past memories are intact. I have no problems recalling lyrics of very old songs or sequences of events as far back as mid 1960's. The problem was with recent memories. I  took many quizzes/tests for Alzheimer's and the results all confirmed that I do not have Alzheimer's. However, I still wondered what was the causal factor that caused me to be more forgetful. And then I came across this article in Wired.

Author Nicholas Carr: The Web Shatters Focus, Rewires Brains

Following that, I did background reading on Nicholas Carr and came across this article:

Is Google Making Us Stupid? by Nicholas Carr.

Published in June 2011, Nicholas Carr's book was a finalist in the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in General Non-fiction. You can read other review in the Amazon site HERE.

I was stunned by William Timothy Lukeman's review in Amazon where he said:

In this short but informative, thought-provoking book, Nicholas Carr presents an argument I've long felt to be true on a humanist level, but supports it with considerable scientific research. In fact, he speaks as a longtime computer enthusiast, one who's come to question what he once wholeheartedly embraced ... and even now, he takes care to distinguish between the beneficial & detrimental aspects of the Internet.
The argument in question?
- Greater access to knowledge is not the same as greater knowledge.
- An ever-increasing plethora of facts & data is not the same as wisdom.
- Breadth of knowledge is not the same as depth of knowledge.
- Multitasking is not the same as complexity

Not to be missed is Emily St. John Mandel's review in The Millions.

Finally, here's the good news. You can read/download Nicholas Carr's book AT THIS LINK.

As such, I have drastically cut down on my internet usage and only read articles on health, technology, humour, literature and a few other topics. Staying away from local news (except headlines on Twitter) has been very good for me. The changed reading habit and increased intake of lecithin and virgin coconut oil has greatly improved my memory and concentration level. Anyway, do check out the links and read the book. Have a wonderful weekend.

Nyanyuk Mahathir Semakin Menjadi-jadi

Malacca: Walking Around Chinatown

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 10:25 PM PDT

Malacca: Walking Around Chinatown – It was a sunny afternoon after eating some Cendol and Laksa at the always-crowded Jonker88 Cafe. We strolled around the Chinatown area, which also known as the area around Jonker Walk (Jalan Hang Jebat). This place is very similar to Penang, the old-school electic straits shophouses and the street are almost the same. It's just that the street in Malacca is narrower and the number of these shophouses are less than in Penang.

One thing I like about Malacca is that they truly develop this heritage part of the city into a living museum and tourist area. It's so tourist concentrated with souvenir shops, cafe, restaurant and guesthouse all around this place. I like walking around the heritage area, it's like bring me back in time.

Jalan Tukang Emas and Jalan Tukang Besi are full of guesthouses.

Joss sticks.

Inside Cheng Ho Tea House & Museum. Ground level is free of charge and one have to pay RM10 to visit the upper level.

You can check out the electronic puppet show which tells you the story of Cheng Ho.

Little ang-mo kid who was watching the puppet show.

The No. 8 Heeren Street is a museum located on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, also known as Heeren Street is currently number 1 to-do in Malacca according to TripAdvisor. Unfortunately, it was closed when we were there. I've no idea what is it about but curious.

Li Hong, Steve, Arvin, Wesley, me and Jia Hui.

Do you like Malacca? How about Penang? Penang is the best, because I am from Penang. =D
